This week, we have donald trump being endorsed at the republican nominee for the forthcoming election. I listened to our leading voice in scotland, he said you dont remember your history, learn for your history by. In many i think the message is the right thing to do. Theyre downgrading a particular artefact and relabeling it. They are talking about both the positives and negatives of this individuals history. They recognise very clearly how you retell in the future, he was a slave owner. That to me seems to bea a slave owner. That to me seems to be a very practical and realistic way to deal with our past. Talk about the wider impact of cultural pacemakers within media and particularly television, how it can be there can be biases that are implicit in ignoring and downgrading black and brown voices. There are actions being taken of course, not only within tb, but theres a reckoning and reawa kening within tb, but theres a reckoning and reawakening within television. So many of these measures around recruitment into key positions inevitably will start at gradual level of younger people. You just have this enormous time lag for change and industries. Its difficult to know how to tackle that. Its notjust the time lag thats a problem. The guardian remembers him as a junior tv producer. Many of his friends felt like he had no choice to rethink this, because they didnt see how he would progress. Some of the recent m ista kes would progress. Some of the recent mistakes of the bbc have made might not have been made if they had more senior black people in their newsrooms. So its about that question of progression. There arent enough people of colour in any aspect of british life, we have to ask ourselves some pretty hard questions about why that is and what were going to do to address it. Try and take down those barriers because of particular aspects of their background or characteristics. I think its a very clever way of speaking to the elites across the country, but its requirements and its desperate to change, and hes done well with the speech. Slightly similar theme. I think the last night of the problems holds a special place in many britains hearts the proms. There was some suggestion over the weekend that they may not be performed at all. Thats picked up quite a steam among conservative mps, who cant see the reason for trying to stop the lyrics of songs that are very popular. L really strong feeling on both sides of this debate. Undoubtedly, and the headline, never knowingly understated in this assessment of the situation. I dont have a huge amount of sympathy for the story. I think the last night of the proms is something quintessentially british, but what do we mean by that . When it comes to last night of the proms, its very white, very middle class and very english. It is not necessarily a requisition of britain today. It should be subject to questions like do we want to sing songs that some people could send her to celebrating in prior colonialism . That does not mean it cant happen, but it should be open to legitimate questioning and reasoning, and we should be able to debate these issues and be glad to do so ina debate these issues and be glad to do so in a democratic society. Last week, storm ellen brought us some very wet and windy weather. This week, we have another named storm, this is storm francis, named by the met office. You can see the hook developing in the cloud structure on the satellite picture. This shows an area of low pressure that is deepening rapidly. It will continue to deepen as it moves across oui shores, an unusually deep low for the time of the year bringing some unusually strong winds. With that, some heavy rain. Its a combination that could well cause some disruption. That rain already setting in for many of us. It will continue to pile northwards through the day. It then slows down across parts of northern england, central and southern scotland, Northern Ireland, some rain feeding back into wales. These areas could see some localised flooding. And then we have the winds, which will be strengthening through the day. During the afternoon, quite widely across england and wales, well see gusts of 50 to 60 mph, some exposed coast and hills could see gusts of 70 mph. And that could cause minor damage and poor travelling conditions. 20 further north, but with the heavy rain continuing. In aberdeen, and off the north sea, the outbreaks of rain, temperatures 13 or 1a degrees. It will not feel too pleasant. 22 degrees down towards the south.
