Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are jack blanchard, editor of politcos london playbook, and madeline grant, deputy comment editor at the Daily Telegraph. Tomorrows front page, starting with the daily mail, its headline calls the Prime Ministers top aide defiant for refusing to apologise after taking a 260 mile trip at the height of lockdown. The mirror says a shameless Dominic Cummings claimed his situation was exceptional and had no regrets after breaking lockdown rules while his family had covid 19 symptoms. The i says mr cummings was unrepentant at the press conference he gave to explain his actions and the paper highlights what it calls an outpouring of dismay from scientists, some ministers, medics and police. The guardian says mrcummings appearance in number 10s rose garden raised yet more questions, after the adviser admitted he suspected both he and his wife had coronavirus when they made the decision to travel across the country with their son. The times says conservative mps and some senior ministers are concerned about the lack of an apology from mr cummings fearing that it will lead others to flout the rules. The express is in celebratory mood with the headline hurrah shops to open doors soon as the Prime Minister borisjohnson says non essential shops can open next month. And the sun says england will be open business as the Prime Minister urges people to go out and spend when shops open their doors on june 15th. So lets begin. We are going to startjack blanchard, madeline grant, with a double paper, the daily mirror in the daily mail, who unofficially potentially combined their coverage. The daily mirror no regrets, no apology. And the daily mirror no regrets, no apology. And encase the daily mirror no regrets, no apology. And encase they texted that to the mail, the male has flipped it around. No apology, regrets. Full youre keeping lists of politicians are people who said no regrets in life, number one edith the singer and norman lamont, the chancel of the exchequer in the mid 90s, and on number three, Dominic Cummings. Madeline grant, very unusual to see the mayor and the mail saying the same thing. Yes, its quite extraordinary to see two newspapers normally in disagreement suddenly finding themselves in a state of violent agreement over Dominic Cummings. But i also think its interesting that both have gone heavy on the idea that there is kind of in heavy on the idea that there is kind ofina heavy on the idea that there is kind of in a lack of apology from Dominic Cummings throughout all of this. I find that a bit odd in that sense because surely it would have been some pretty disingenuous for Dominic Cummings to kind of apologise or express regret, given that he repeatedly made the point that everything that he did he felt was in the interest of his family under extreme circumstances. Im not sure that after the kind of press conference that he gave, he couldve given a sincere apology, saying that he regretted the actions that he taken. Butts, madeline, you know as well as i do, there are many forms of apologies, im sorry that people feel bad, im sorry for this to my apologise for creating a distraction, there are quite a lot of different ways to say sorry, and those papers notice that he didnt use any of them. Know, although, the Prime Minister did launch a classic politician not apology where he apologises for the anger and confusion that people have felt. I still think thats pretty disingenuous, because when you say you are sorry for how you felt about something, you are essentially pinning the blame. That doesnt make anyone feel better, does a . He wasnt expecting responsibility, and he wouldnt have in this instance and said yes i did a terrible thing, welcome i think that wouldve been dishonest, because i dont think that he did a terrible thing. I think many people watching at home would entirely empathize with the reasons for that journey. Jack blanchard from politico, when you look at the mirror and the male, no regrets, should Dominic Cummings have said sorry . Yes, of course he should. It couldve been handled so differently. When this story first broke on friday night, that he had made this 260 mile trip across the country in the middle of lockdown with a sick person in the car, he should have said i apologise, i made a mistake and i panicked, iwas worried about my family. I did it with the best intentions. I realise it was the wrong thing to do. I really think people wouldve moved oii really think people wouldve moved on from that. People understand that you know, stressful situations with illness and worry, you know, people do sometimes make the wrong decision, and quite possibly that story wouldve died a couple of days later. Instead, it happened is that downing street briefed how this was fa ke downing street briefed how this was fake news and that they werent going to bother to respond to the allegations, and dominic isnt remotely bothered by the unnamed source remotely bothered by the unnamed source releasing the story, and it was that sort of aggressive lack of contrition that has cause this to explode over the weekend, and it has caused so much anger over conservative mps who were actually receiving information that this supposedly would allow this thing to happen through his own actions and his own lack of contrition, you know . You can do things with the best intentions and except it was a mistake and say sorry. People do understand how serious the situation is, but this is not the guy who is used to saying sorry. Jack, just going through headlines in my head, december, rejoice. About the tory election, and then what planet are they on some of the no apology committed regrets, quite a change in this newspaper from december to committed regrets, quite a change in this newspaperfrom december to now. Yes, and it shows how this goes beyond politics. You know, they dont like to be taken, and they know that their readers are doing absolutely everything they can to stick by the letter of these rules that theyve been told they have to obey, because they know how important it is and they know there is something going on, 60 60 mph trips testing their eyesight, they been staying home at most of the country, now the virus has disappeared so quickly over the last few weeks, so you know, its not about politics. Ive seen another article today by one of the senior people at conservative home, the main tory website, again, saying that this isnt acceptable. As much as they like Dominic Cummings and that they think hes great, hes got to go, so we could swell across political lines, this, because its about decency and public life and its about democracy and doing the right thing for the nation. Madeline grant from the telegraph, regardless of the rights and wrongs of what Dominic Cummings did, which im sure we will continue to talk about, no politician, no special adviser will surely ever want to lose the daily mail. No, certainly not. But it does show, i think, that we are obviously in the middle of aggressive government at the moment. There are nuances and fissures within that divide that are worth kind of teasing out, particularly when it comes to Dominic Cummings, who has often been very good at making enemies of people within the conservative party and he famously during the brexit referendum managed to enrage many of the long standing tory arch brexit years who had been doing it for ages. Soy think there isa doing it for ages. Soy think there is a bit more to this, and there we re is a bit more to this, and there were lots of people that before this crisis would have been calling for blood and getting rid of Dominic Cummings in one way or other, then it came to a situation of knives outcome on the details of this trip emerged. I do very much agree with jack about the very bad handling of this crisis. Not just jack about the very bad handling of this crisis. Notjust the jack about the very bad handling of this crisis. Not just the fact that the situation with circumstances that i think many people would empathize with was not made public for so long, and thus allowing, you know, anger and suspicion and resentment to kind of grow, but its also telling that Dominic Cummings was taking advantage of exemptions in the guidance that although they werent in the guidance, poorly werent in the guidance, poorly werent widely understood by the public. That suggests a lack of communication from the government, but also a a lack of reporting on those exemptions from the media. After all, if people are able. Thats a debatable point about whether or not that guidance was the law which came in on the 26th of march and the guidance that came in on the 22nd of march as well, joe, can we hold you on that point and move on to the guardian, which is one of the first papers which led to the story on friday. I dont regret what i did. A picture of Dominic Cummings in the downing street rose garden. Im interested, jack blanchard, with the first sentence of the story. In the crisis over Dominic Cummings raged unabated last night. But i saw one person from the Financial Times saying they thank you will pull through, one of theresa mays former adviser said it will be off the broadcast headlines by the end of the week, but the guardian doesnt agree. Yeah, no. Im inclined to say i dont think it does range unabated. I think that at some point, we all have to move on here. He isjust one guy. He has broken the rules. At the end of the day, when the Prime Minister has takena day, when the Prime Minister has taken a decision, i would say that, you know, its up to the Prime Minister who eat he employs, Boris Johnson is prepared to take a political hit for this, because he knows, in the end, whatever he decides, if its worth it to have Dominic Cummings in that team, he is the central figure in downing street, by far the most powerful adviser you know, he has got the key role in some of in the way the country is run so borisjohnson is preparing to take that hit. So unless there is more to come out of this, which seems unlikely, given that mrcummings this, which seems unlikely, given that mr cummings gave his chapter in a very long press conference this afternoon, eventually, we all have to move on. I think what doesnt go away is relaxing downing street, this attack line that it gives to his opponents, this one rule for you and one rule for the rest of us, thoseis and one rule for the rest of us, those is one of the most potent political attack lines in modern politics, and dominic has handed that to all of the tory parties on a plate, and you will not hear the end of that for a very long time. Madeline grant on the guardian, jack says he slightly disagrees, it isnt raging unabated, and the tweets from the ft says unless there are new fa cts , the ft says unless there are new facts, that it will actually start to fade away when other stories happen, do you see that happening . Yes, i think that is true. I think as jack said, the original narrative of hypocrisy and one rule for us and another for them is extremely powerful and can be widely understood by. It really cuts to the general public i really think. In some ways, i believe that some of cummings critics have actually helped ensure to keep his clinical survival by turning this into a culture war issue. So when you look at things like the angry pitchfork mob camped outside cummings home, which is an extra new level of intimidation and harassment that i think that as a society we should condemn, the fact that the Civil Service official twitter feed was tweeting out abuse of the government, and i think many would conclude that the level of anger was not actually proportionate to the circumstances of the matter. Potentially, it could be seen as a case of all scores being settled. In that environment i think many people who were initially angry and justifiably so about Dominic Cummings behaviour may decide that you know, they would rather be on. Their site and the culture war is kind of determined. Lets look at the Times Newspaper now, which plays its pretty straight. I did not break lockdown rules. Its pretty straight. I did not break lockdown rules. Theres its pretty straight. I did not break lockdown rules. Theres not a huge amount to comment on, jack, which is a pretty straight forward headline. I like to ask a different question if i may, you are someone who deals with politics in westminster day in and day out, can you tell our viewers who dont necessarily follow it our in and hour out the kind of role, the kind of influence that Dominic Cummings has in this administration . No, he is the second most powerful man after borisjohnson is the second most powerful man after Boris Johnson number without a shadow of a doubt. Hes the central figure in downing street. He runs all of the political operation. He doesnt make all the decisions, he doesnt make all the decisions, he doesnt always get his way, he can putideas doesnt always get his way, he can put ideas forward and sometimes the promised or will overrule him. We have seen several cases of that. But there is no one who wields more influence across all the arms of government, all the policy of decisions, hes at every important meeting cummings of the premise ors side, he decides if the promised or gets to speak to the premise or gets to speak to the premise or gets to speak to her mother can be a more central figure. Thats why the story is so potent. If it were an elected divisor that most people never heard of, no one would be as angry. Madeline grant, picking up on the plains, unelected advisers would the plains, unelected advisers would the targets of in brussels had been a target of a degree of hostility last year during a different debate debate politics, but this unelected adviser, tells about the hidden influence that he has the way you see its . As jack said, he is the second most powerful person in british politics, and the fa ct person in british politics, and the fact that he is an unelected official, that is bringing questions. Think these kind of figures have always fascinated the public, and hence why Dominic Cummings is often described in the media as a kind of spin valley like figure, hes compared to machiavelli. I think some of this speculation is kind of inevitable when you have some of the who holds a great deal of power because of theirjob. You know, the press Conference Today was a massive departure from reality. We dont normally hear from it all. So that creates a cloud of mystery around these advisers. Sorry, madeline, just picking up on that point, what are my colleagues earlier in the day, vicki young, she said this afternoons press conference said most of the time the british people had actually heard him speak. And we got to see him sitting down for an hour, hour and got to see him sitting down for an hour, hourand a half, we got to see him sitting down for an hour, hour and a half, we were told one thing about how he might be, and then he came across in a certain way, im not giving away any of this. Jack blanchard, is that the Dominic Cummings you know . You dont know . You know, i know people who know . You know, i know people who know him very well, and they say that he is absolutely often a very considered, polite, mild mannered person. Although, hes not always like that, hes clearly very intelligent. You know, people who work with them have does make very views of him. Some of them really, really like him and some really, really like him and some really, really dont. Thats fair to say. But what you saw and what was smart from downing street today as opposed to whats been a pretty Big Communications disaster since friday night was at least people got to see that here he is, real human, hes really like a normal guy, hes worried about us kid, of course, all of that is true, and he sometimes gets painted as this very black and white sort of cartoon character, of course, hes much more nuanced than that. It was a fascinating insight into someone with that of influence. Look at the metro newspaper now, which probably has the pun of the day stay elite. I turn has the pun of the day stay elite. Iturn on has the pun of the day stay elite. I turn on stay alert. Does that catch your eye, madeleine visio yes. Its a kind of pun, stay elite is the kind of pun on the stay alert andi the kind of pun on the stay alert and i think its very much plays into some of the criticism of Dominic Cummings for the fact that that he was in a privileged position because he was able to, you know, have access to an isolated cottage in which he and his family could stay in safely. Obviously, not a luxury that supported to most of the general public. And i think the anti elite message is what i think we will be seeing a lot more, notjust in relation to Dominic Cummings, but in general, as the time passes. As we feel the economic harm of the virus more clearly, because despite the claims that we are all in it together, the virus clearly hasnt been felt the same across all social groups. For many people, there has been some interest in i saw the daily mail a few days very large number of people feeling better off because of the virus. Thats obviously not true for most people can anything will be hardly true for anyone a few months down the line. Soi anyone a few months down the line. So i would only expect this kind of anti elite resented to grow as time passes. Madeleine, you talked with the economy there, jack, i will compute a second. Open for business. Is the headline of the sun. Naming of the dates in which the various businesses can reopen. Obviously, the sun and several other newspapers are excited by that, jack. Its big news, isnt it is yellow the return to what we are calling the new normal in our high streets, to see these shops opening in some form, i guess, in a way that we are seeing some of the smaller shops open now around only a small amount of persons are allowed at one time. Cues we see down the high street, certainly down my high streets, people in the shops, i guess they will become more part of it. Its an interesting timing for this, obviously, this is some weeks away when this is going to happen. Asl away when this is going to happen. As i understand it they spent yesterday in downing street trying to figure all of the interesting things they could possibly announce this weekjust to try and knock Dominic Cummings off as many front pages as possible. Of, the shop stray, and the other papers have really gazed into this fall section. Lets go to the Daily Telegraph which is the same economic story. Open high street do trust through the edges of the word normality . I think we are somewhere off normality in my opinion. Even when these shops have opened, they will still be quite strict social distancing measures in place, and what is very important in an area where i would see the government love to see the government rocks into measures somewhat as the fact that they maintain the two metre rule, which in practice will have a huge impact on the operations of retail outlets, because in practice, it will limit the number of customers that can be allowed into the shop. So even though the shops are opening and its great news that we are edging to it in a way. This is definitely the most ambitious relaxation of the lockdown we have had so far. I would also like to see a bit more attention from the government of how these retail outlets are supposed to keep going with a two metre rule in place, which is far more rigorous than is being operated in many other countries around the world, and it goes against the guidance of the world health organisation. Jack blanchard come i dont know how much you are able to get out of the house of the moment, but from your observations, have we got better at social distancing as the weeks and months have gone by or are we getting worse . I think its become normal for a lot of people, we do just sort of get used to it. Sol think a lot of people probably have got better at it, just because its become second nature. You dont even really think about it very much and work on me just keep your distance. Having said that, you know, wandering around in the park yesterday, there were definitely people who didnt seem to be embracing the social distancing guidelines perhaps as strictly as they should have been, and i suspect, you know, as the summer goes on and the nice weather and particularly may be people who feel they have had the virus are just not that bothered about it, it will be very ha rd that bothered about it, it will be very hard to police everybody, isnt it . But thats always been the difficulty. Madeleine, the final questions you can have a got better at it or worse at its . I think we have adapted very quickly. You know, as jack alluded to earlier, humans are adaptable to situations, but i really hope that this doesnt become the new normal, actually. I think it would be awful if we forgot what life was like before this and we grow too used to living in this kind of isolated way that we cant embrace and spend time with our friends. Im afraid we will have to stop there madeleine grant from the telegraph and jack blanchard. Thank you so much. Thats it for the papers this evening. My thanks to jack and madeleine. Goodnight. Hello, im gavin ramjaun, and this is your latest sports news. The Womens Super League in england has ended immediately. The outcome of the wsl title, which sees chelsea trail Manchester City byjust a point, plus promotion and relegation issues, are still to be decided. Theyve been expecting for sometime now, the clubs, theyve been anticipating this news. There will be general disappointment, sadness, but its not going to come as a great surprise. Most of them agree this is the right decision, the sensible decision, and the fa says this comes after overwhelming feedback from clubs, who are almost united in this agreement that they could not continue. It leaves 45 Womens Super League games and 36 womens championship games, theyll be left unplayed this season, but theyre still to decide now where the clubs will finish in the table. Theres decisions still to be made by the main fa board regarding matters around relegation, promotion, how to fairly decide final league placings for those clubs who had games in hand. So theres still some decisions still to come, but what we do know with certainty is that the clubs wont play any more games this season. That news comes after the government gave permission for elite players from all sports, to have some contact in training, which sees the return of things like tackling. Itll allow clubs to prepare for competitive fixtures. Our Sports Correspondent joe wilson reports. Under lockdown so far, this is what professional training has looked like, individuals practising their skills. Coaches can watch from a distance but essentially, its solitary. Well, the two metre barrier no longer applies. Remember the old days . Well training wont look like this again straightaway. Initially, clusters of just two or three individuals will be allowed. But the government accepts that practice has to be realistic. The dcms statement reads. Well, imagine rugby, for example, without physical contact . There has, thus far, been no return to training in Premiership Rugby at all. Sports in this stage two will still have to adhere to guidelines and limitations. For example, changing rooms should still be closed, equipment cant be shared, positive covid i9 tests must be immediately reported. And it is still the individuals right to opt out. Remember, even in the first stage in separate sessions, some have chosen not to return to training grounds. This is a new directive, its not an order. Joe wilson, bbc news. Staying with the return of football, and one of the biggest derby rivalries in spain is set to get the la liga season restarted on the 11th ofjune. La liga chiefjavier tebas hopes that real betis and sevilla will meet behind closed doors, in a match he wants to be a tribute to all the people who have died. Meanwhile, lionel messi and his Barcelona Team mates are training ahead of a possible return. They have a two point lead at the top of the table over real madrid and are still involved in this seasons champions league. Manchester uniteds hopes of keeping striker odion ighalo until the end of the season are looking slimmer. The chinese side shanghai shenhua are keen for him to return, when his loan spell ends at the end of the month. Ighalo was signed on a short term loan deal injanuary and has scored four goals during his time at old trafford. George kruis says hes not closing the door on International Rugby despite announcing this morning that he is leaving saracens to move to japan. The england lock has signed a one year deal with panasonic wild knights. He has been at sarries, who were relegated to the championship for salary cap breaches, for 11 years. The rfu doesnt normally select players based abroad but havent ruled out selection for those saracens players who move overseas. John jeffrey has been appointed interim chairman of the Scottish Rugby union to replace colin grassie, who is stepping down. Jeffrey won a0 caps at flanker for his country, last playing in 1991. And there was another Charity Golf Event in the states. Tiger woods and Phil Mickelson paired up with nfl stars Peyton Manning and tom brady. And brady here showing just how its done too. This is him just casually making an eagle on a parfive. Brady might be one of the most talented sportspeople on the planet, but could he be in need a new pair of trousers after a malfunction, shall we say . There we go. That is all the sport from us for now. Hello. If youre looking for rain through this week, there is not very much in the forecast. But what i can offer you is plenty of warmth. In fact, during monday to the south west of london, temperatures got very close to 27 degrees. Well see more very warm weather over the next few days. On the satellite picture, you can see this stripe of cloud thats been working its way in towards the north west. Not bringing an awful lot of rain, though. This is a frontal system, but one which is weakening very quickly, so really we just have a band of cloud sitting in place across parts of england and wales through tuesday morning. Maybe the odd spot of drizzle around, but generally speaking it will be dry. A bit more in the way of cloud generally than we had during monday. Conversely for Northern Ireland and scotland, here we see long spells of sunshine. Still quite breezy in the far north, and a little bit on the cool side here, i suppose, but the further south you are, top temperatures getting up to 25 degrees. Now as we move through tuesday evening, our old front sitting in place, butjust a band of cloud really at this stage. Could be a bit misty and murky in some coastal spots in the south and west and more cloud starts to work in towards parts of Northern Ireland. In general, it is a dry night and not a particularly cold one with lows between 7 14 degrees. So during wednesday, High Pressure still very much in charge of this warm front here. It will be introducing more cloud and maybejust nosing some rain into the western side of Northern Ireland and potentially the west of scotland. A bit of uncertainty aboutjust how far east this rain will get. But to the south of this band of cloud and patchy rain, that is where we have the very warm air. Temperatures down towards the south, cardiff, london in the mid 20s celsius and not quite as warm as that across the northern half of the uk, but as we move towards the end of the week, as this area of High Pressure moves its way a little bit further east, more and more of us get to feel the effects of some very warm air. And i think on thursday, we will see plentiful sunshine across most areas, and a bit more cloud across scotland, maybe just the odd shower across northern half of the country, but the vast majority will be dry. But those temperatures up to 26 degrees there in cardiff, 22 in glasgow, but a little bit cooler for some of those north sea coasts. Thats a trend that will continue on into friday, and as we head into the weekend, well, those temperatures stay pretty high for the time of year and very little sign of rain for most of us. This is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. Im james reynolds. Britains Prime Minister says he regrets the confusion and anger caused by his special advisers long journeys during the anti virus lockdown. No, i dont regret what i did. As i said, i think reasonable people may well disagree. Meanwhile, the political battle over the advisers future continues with mps lining up in support and opposition. The who suspends testing of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for covid 19, saying the drug could damage the health of some people. And from the siege of aleppo to the hospitals of britain, we talk to the syrian refugee doctors helping in the fight against the pandemic
