A powerful typhoon has hit the philippines and is projected to sweep across the island of luzon, where the Capital Manila is located. Super typhoon noru made landfall within the last couple of hours and could bring winds of up to 200 km h. Our weather forecaster Helen Willetts has more. Hello. This large mass of cloud is a strong, powerful typhoon called noru, which has been throwing rain across the philippines for at least the last 2a hours, but has been developing intensively into that powerful storm, so a life threatening storm because it has got destructive winds, and it will give extreme amounts of rainfall, potentially catastrophic flooding and a large storm surge. Once it moves out into the south china seas open waters, expected to still be a typhoon, it could well intensify again and head into parts of vietnam, threaten china with some heavy rain and also give rains to thailand, cambodia and laos where it has been very wet already because of low pressure. So some destructive winds which could cause power cuts, gusts of up to 250 km h, sustained winds of 170, a large storm surge inundating the coasts with water, and therefore flash flooding because we will see exceptional amounts of rain. The wind continuing to strengthen, cloud across the uk, a short spell of rain that moves away from scotland and Northern Ireland this evening, the wind direction changes, a northerly wind will bring in some showers. Not quite as cold as last night, temperatures in Eastern Scotland and North East England down to seven degrees. By the time we get to tomorrow morning, the Weather Front bringing the rain band is in the english channel, and we have this run of much stronger northerly winds across the uk bringing colder air all the way from iceland, a mixture of sunshine and showers, pushed in on those very brisk winds, particularly frequent showers, Northern Scotland down those north sea coasts, but some further west as well. The winds are going to be very strong and gusty, perhaps touching gale force in Northern Scotland, temperatures struggling to make double figures, 16 in the far south, but everywhere feeling colder in the strong wind. Now on bbc news, The Great Indian Cricket dream the women in blue, tracing the evolution of the Indian Womens cricket team from Humble Beginnings in the 19705 to twice reaching the world cup final. I was the first female bowler, was number one, so really enjoyed that moment. Got that golden armband also, but at the same time, its a lot of responsibility. When it comes to cricket, india is unstoppable. Im not being facetious when i say this but i actually prefer watching womens cricket now. When i watch womens cricket, theres a certain freshness to it. Yeah, i do feel proud that womens cricket is progressing and im really confident that it will keep progressing from now. Its getting there, its getting there. I think without the womens ipl or should i say when the womens ipl happens it will reach another level. The way team has transformed, it definitely shows that there is a lot of scope of forming a very strong side in the coming years. The skill levels are just fascinating when you see that. Its like, wow. I mean, how did we miss all this all these years . Definitely the Dream Hasjust begun. The dream is to win the world cup for india. When you talk about cricket in india, i think the first city that comes to mind is mumbai, you know . I there are so many cricketersj who have come up from here and you know, it has a legacy. Of producing amazing cricketers and i am one of them. But, yeah, its so nice to see i whichever the street you go on, youll find someone out there with a bat or. I its very creative, you know . They make anything the stumps. Cricket has a huge influence in our society and thats the beauty about this thing, and i think you have to give a lot of credit to bcci also. Where theyve improved infrastructure, they bring a lot of grassroot level things, television things, make sure that cricketers get a lot of matches, bilateral series, world cup. The first bat was given. To me by my grandfather when i was at the age of three and it was a plastic bat and it was brown in colour. You know, normally for an indian girl, i the gift your grandfather would give you is a barbie doll or a kitchen set. But for me, it was completely. Different because i loved cricket and he knew it, so, you know, that was such a nice thing from him. I think from there, it kind of kicked off for me. Chandor is a very small place. Its kind of a village. Its quite away from the city and you have to go by local train from here to chandor and those days, you know, transport was not up to the mark. We used to rely on a local train because there was no Training Facilities available in chandor, so i had to come to calcutta those days, it was used to call calcutta, now is kolkata. If it was not for my parents supported me, ithink i would be where i am today because at that time still,. Things in india were not as not as open as they are today. Womens cricket has made a lot of progress and we are getting so many good young women cricketers now and many of the families are supporting their kids to try and pursue cricket as their career, which was not the case in the past. For my grandparents, it was very difficult to process that their granddaughter was getting into sport, and a sport where its a rough sport and none of my cousins are into sport none. So im the only odd person out in the family to choose a profession, such an unconventional profession, back in those days, for a women, for a girl to take up. So, my father had to let go his promotion in the bank because then, we had to shift basically if he gets promotion elsewhere, out of hyderabad. My mother, who was working woman, had to let go of her career to sort of give opportunity to her daughter to create an identity of her own. If not for the support of both my parents, i wouldnt be here where i am. I think my family, only my grandma was a person who was to support me lot. You know, he always found someone in the house and all people on one side and one person will be there on your side. I think the grandma was always in my side. She believed that women should take something, their own way. It should not be only thing only study and go get married. You need to create your own identity. Yeah, i still remember the first time i went i for my cricket selection. It was at shivaji park. So, immediately i put on my whites, packed my kitbag, my dad got me in the car, i came down to shivaji park. I am holding my dads hand, like this tiny little girl like, i was eight years old, ok . I so, my dad holding my hand and in the other hand, he is holding my kitbag. And i walked in and the moment i came for the selection, the girls kind of laughedj a little, like they did not want to show it but itj was kind of Obvious Theyjust giggled a little bit because they were like 19,| 20 and i was like this eight Year Old Girl going out and playing. So i got two complimentary ticket from my school, and i begged to my dad, i said, please come with me. I dont know how to go to eden garden, where to sit. So, ijust entered through the main place where the Eden Garden Clubhouse was there, and there was an Organisation Person was standing. He said, you are you want to be a ball girl . Come inside, your t shirt, they are going to sell. I said, no, i am nota ballgirl. No, no i know. Your name is there. Im thinking something was wrong but my dad said, you go and we will be here. After the match, im going to pick you from here. I said ok. I go there a stranger kind of thing. I go enter and see a lot of young girls are sitting on the boundary line. I understood that they randomly, they are taking those ball girls. I sat there, watched entire game and when i saw that Belinda Clark won the trophy, taking a victory lap, that day i realised, thats it this is im going to do. Im going to play this spot professionally and one day, im going to represent my country. That is how my dream started. See, my dad was in the air force so was an Ex Serviceman and because of dads background, he was very strict in terms of timing. He was very punctual and he still is so he insisted that i tag along with my brother to his academy in the mornings. So i would just carry my homework, open my eyes in the ground and do my Math Homework and my brother used to play cricket. That is how i was introduced to the sport. And my First Impression of that sport was it was only meant for boys because academy was full of boys. I didnt happen to see not even a single girl. My brothers coach, jyoti prasad, he used to watch me every day. He said, like, you know, i used to watch you as a kid. Every day 6am, you would come sharp to the academy and i thought, let me see how the girl plays, so one day, he said, pick up the bat. Let me throw you a few tennis balls. I happened to probably impress the coach better than my brother and he told my father to invest his energy and time and money into turning his daughter as a cricketer than his son. Growing up. Being a mumbai cricketer, one name is for sure,. Thats sachin tendulkar. Ithink. I mean, at that time, i should not like watching a cricket a lot but the thing| was in my family, everyone was so crazy in the moment. Sachin tendulkar should come to bat, like, leave everything,. Come here and watch the game. The moment he gets out, tvs off, thats it. Sachin played a big role in my career a big influence, you can say because growing up with him, you know, like, you know, he was a role model for all of us as youngsters. And then, we start following cricket and we become mad and wherever cricket is to play, we just keep watching and watching and watching. My first coach was a big fan of kapil dev. So hes, like, he would tell me, like, you have to be like kapil dev. You have to bowl and bat like him, so i started as an all rounder, i used to be a fast bowler and then, i would bat as a top order batter, as an opening batsman. So the challenges that i faced growing up with no womens. Cricket existed, so for a girl playing cricket, i that was very rare. So, i think i did not have a place to practise so i used to practise with my brothers. And i understood the other. Challenges we faced as girls, we were always playing i these and stuff like that, so there was always an issue for the wash rooms and stuff like that. So, if you are playing over here, sometimes the wash rooms used to be really far i like a ten minute walk, i think but now the good things now times have changed, you know . People actually treat womens cricket as equal as mens cricket. I used to be the only girl, 300, 400 boys but now, i see otheri girls take up the sport, pick up, you know, and playing cricket and competing with the boys. I think that is a treat to watch. So, from there onwards, it was quite difficult, coming, you know, taking Early Morning train, particularly in the winter, five oclock, its pitch dark, you are travelling alone most of the time, so a lot of people in the train used to ask me, where are you going for what . And when i used to say, i am going to go there and do my cricket training, they used to laugh. They use to do a lot of sarcasm and my coach was very strict. If i late for one minute, he used to say, get out from here. You cant do the practice. And it was pretty expensive also. Coming from a middle class family, getting money, spending extra money on the cricket, so it was a big challenge for my family and my life was pretty much, you know, different circle. Stepping out of the house, the challenge that, again, i had to face as a cricketer was from people. When we used to travel, a lot of them would associate, when they look at the kitbags, they would associate it with a soccer team or a hockey team, so when we would tell them that, no, were going for a cricket tournament, their reaction would be of, oh, Girls Play Cricket . I did not feel insulted, but i felt weird from the way that people reacted to it, because these things, yes, fora moment, it would hurt, or sometimes i would wonder, what sort of comments are these . What sort of questions . But over the years, then i realised it could be because because of the lack of awareness, of knowing that girls could also play cricket and to change that perception, it took a long, long, long time. I still remember the first time when i got the call, so i was sleeping but ii was not getting sleep like, pretending to be sleeping, and my dads phone rang and my dad said hello, like this, and then he startedi crying, so i knew, 0k, fine, dude. I its happened. Its finally happened. One of the coaches had called up and he said, i congratulations that, you know, your daughter gotten selected to play for india. And i woke up and i saw my mum and dad both were crying. I still remember, like, a full flashback in my mind, that small, young girl. Getting her dads hand, dad holding the kitbag in the other hand, walking. The sacrifices, the efforts, the hard work, the ups and and downs everything made sense. That was ultimate goal for me to represent my country. I wanted to play for my country, so definitely, that was very emotional moment in my career. And when i received my first india cap and my india jersey, i was for five minutes, i was absolutely spellbound. I could not talk and ijust sat down and said yes, i achieved that, so, yeah, it was very special for me. More than the happiness of wearing the jersey, there was a lot of expectation on my shoulders, and those days we did not have the ritual of handing over of the debut caps, so i did not have that, i do not have to go through that, but maybe in a way, god made it up to me because in the last five or six years, ive given a lot of india caps to the girls, but each time i gave them, ive enjoyed that ceremony, because its a huge, huge honour to sort of hand over the cap. In a way, you are bringing in talent into the side. I rememberthe point that i felt 0k, womens cricketj has made a mark in india i was the time, i would say, 2017, where india reached the finals at lords, and i think we lost by nine runs or something. I think that was a turning. Point for me, personally i might be wrong but for me, i think that was when cricket. In india became a huge thing. And when someone recognises you for, you know, doing welll out there, its a good feeling and especially when nobodyi used to do it at once and now actually, when you walk out i on the street, theyre like, oh, youre jemimah rodrigues. I love your batting. I think thats a very. They recognise me. I know it is a very silly thing, but i really feel happy when people come up to me and do that. I so, yeah, i think things have. Shifted massively and its only gong to get better from here. Any girls, they can come and participate, if they are talented, they can participate, there is no doubt about it. The thing is the culture. We have different culture. We have lot of barriers. I do respect that all those things, because, absolutely, about our country, you cannot change that. We have lot of good things in our society, our cultures, but at the same times, after 2017 world cup, where that buzz appeared in the country, now theres all those young girls, they want to participate, they want to this sport professionally, and they want to take the sport professionally and they want to represent the country. But at the same time, we know that womens side will happen. I think that would be the ice on the cake, because thats going to be definitely improve womens cricket standard, womens cricket facilities. We have connections to academies all over the country, weve got our academies, and we have more and more girls coming through, wanting to play, more and more womens cricket coming to play, and so theres some real stars coming through, and they are Getting Better development, which means theyre going to be better hitters, theyre going to be faster bowlers, its going to be a more exciting product. So, yes, were on a pathway. Womens ipl will massively help take it to another level, and then, i think, youll see all of those stories coming through of girls across india sort of going against the norm to play this amazing sport and succeed in it. With the womens ipl announced next year, clearly, things will change big time for womens cricket, and it is the time for any woman to take it up as a professional, because one, it is viable, there is money involved in it and, you know, now it is no more in obscurity. Theres so much attached to womens cricket. There is fame, there is glory with social media, everything is amplified. The more you televise it, the lot many girls now have a women role model, which i probably didnt have when i started in the 90s, because in those years, sport was more for men and not for women. Male or female, Indian Cricketers just have such great style and grace in the way they play, and i think they have such an opportunity and a responsibility to be role models for the next generation, so, certainly, ithink they have a great platform now to build upon, and being role models comes with a nice responsibility to try and, sort of, you know, influence the next generation and inspire them. They never envisaged that indian women would be in whites or in colours playing cricket. Not only playing cricket, but playing outstanding cricket. I am so delighted, you know, for girls like mithali raj, jhulan goswami. Theyve done wonders for Indian Cricket and made Indian Womens cricket flourish. We have come a long way in promoting womens cricket, and women sport for that reason, i especially in india now. We have seen so many documentaries, there are movies that are coming out we are all very excited. Maybe ill be there. In one of the scenes no, imjust kidding. But, no, we are very excited, because not many| know their journey and their story, you know, and it would be so nice to know how they went by they fought their battles. They got to the level they are, and they are the legends they are today. Having a biopic made is a different kind of an experience, honestly, because its not an everyday thing you come across, somebody saying, we want to make so one, the first time when they reached out to me, i thought someone was playing a prank, because why would someone want a woman cricketer s journey . So i thought it was an opportunity for me to put across the struggles, the challenges ofjust not my own journey as a cricketer, but also about people or the players that ive played along in all these years. To get it, you know, on the big screen, where people can actually know what it was for womens cricket or women cricketers way back, and then where they see the sport today. My story is going to be televised. Its going to be now coming up the silver screen. I never thought about it, but yeah, it was something different. When i got that offer, initially, i got hesitate. But then i realised if this movie can motivate young girls and boys to play sport, i think that will be the huge thing for me. When it comes to cricket, india is unstoppable. The way theyve played their brand of cricket that theyve played in the longest format, like the test cricket or the one dayers, i think theyre growing in stature and as far as womens cricket is concerned, yes, we definitely need a trophy in our cabin but the way the team has transformed, it definitely shows that there is a lot of scope of forming a very strong side in the coming years. Yeah, i think myjourney has not been smooth. I its been, like, Ups And Downs, Ups And Downs from the time ive started playing. But i strongly believe i that its these moments that actually teach you a lot. Like, stepping in as a 17 Year Old Girl, i then the limelight, the expectations, things like that, its not been easy, its been a journey, and im still, you know, kind of learning how to go about and go forth with that, how to balance both the expectation as well as to enjoy what im doing. I i think its quite difficult to say, you know . Im not a person to predict the future, but i can guess, i think, where Indian Cricket is going on at this moment. In top level, i think they are safe hands. They are improving strength to strength. My ultimate dream, definitely my first dream, would be, you know, winning the world cup for india. I think that is one thing thatl all of us have been dreaming from a long time and i dont know, ijust feel its just a matter of time before that happens for the. Indian womens cricket team. And also, my dream for notjust india l Indian Womens cricket, but All Over The World | would be, you know, Thatjust Girls Go Out There and just play the sport because they. Love playing the sport and just to see the standard going up. And up and many more women participate, i think thatll be a very pleasing sight when, i you know, i am around 70, 80 years old. Ill be there in my. No, i wont in a wheelchair, sorry, but ill be over there i and ill be like, wow womens cricket has come a long way. I if the girl is interested in sport, i think the parents should be brave enough to give her the opportunity. We are in a stage in a generation where i think when we talk about women empowerment, it has to start from home. Where you give opportunities, equal opportunity to your girl, to your daughter as well as your son equally, because thats what my parents have done way back. You know, in a way to help the girl, to as much as i have created my identity, she will find her ways to live a life of her own choice. And if the girl is interested, i think its just the parents i will say duty to sort of give an opportunity to allow her to grow her wings to fly one day. We had this run of much stronger northerly winds across the uk bringing colder air all the way down from iceland, a mixture of sunshine and showers, pushed in on those very brisk winds, particularly frequent showers, Northern Scotland, down those north sea coasts, but some further west as well, very strong and gusty, perhaps touching gale force in northern parts of scotland, and here temperatures will struggle to make double figures. 16 in the far south but everywhere will feel cooler in the winter. This is bbc news. The headlines at five. Labour opens its annual conference as its leader, sir keir starmer, prepares to set out the Dividing Lines between his party and the new conservative government. He tells the bbc he would reverse the governments cut to the top income tax rate. We do need to grow our economy, that has been the single biggest failure of the last 12 years of tory government, but we need to recognise who grows this economy. Voting is under way in italys general election, which polls suggest may result in the countrys most right wing government since the second world war.
