with roland pollard. oh, my gosh, that is amazing. and it's on campus? no, it's in manhattan. chalamet plays the improbably—named gatsby wells, a student from yardley college who accompanies his girlfriend, ashleigh, played by elle fanning, on a weekend trip to his home city of new york. you said you were going to call me 30 minutes ago. ashleigh is there to interview a famous film director, while gatsby, who has no desire to meet up with his super—rich family, is looking forward to showing ashleigh the sites. but when the two get separated, by a series of toe—curling plot contrivances, each are left to follow their own path through an increasingly farcical string of misadventures. shot in 2017 and completed in early 2018, a rainy day in new york was first financed and then dropped by amazon against a backdrop of negative press stories about what allenn has called a 25—year—old baseless allegations of sexual abuse. nevertheless, several key cast members have since expressed regret about appearing in the film, and donated their salaries to charity. whatever your opinion of this debacle, one thing is clear, a rainy day in new york is not very good. in fact, it's very bad. shoddily written, shonkily played and lacking any of the charm even at such late—period allen offerings as 2014's pleasantly forgettable magic in the moonlight. nothing rings true. the characters, the situations, the plot twists, even the rain looks fake. it doesn't help that allen clearly has no ear for youthful 21st century dialogue, leaving chalamet sounding like some posh kid doing a terrible woody allen impression, parroting excruciatingly smug quips like time flies but it flies coach. you know, when i see your m0, i know exactly why amy 86ed you. no, no, no, amy didn't dump me, i got sick of seeing her. yeah. as for fanning, her character is a two—dimensional dits who we're supposed to believe charms her way into a scoop movie interview but who appears to be instructed to simply giggle and gawk through the proceedings. even the movie within the movie looks like it was dreamed up by someone who's never been on a movie set. astonishing, considering this is something like allen's 48th feature. as always, the film is crammed with big names, from selena gomez and jude law to liev schreiber, diego luna and rebecca hall. it's a reminder not only that stars once lined up to appear in allen's films, but also, that a talented cast can't save a frankly lacklustre movie. what are you doing here? i happened to see you out the window from the car, by sheer chance. really. well, that's awkward. awkward ? the title may invoke the romance of the rain, but this is just, pardon the pun, poor. you can catch it or indeed avoid it on a range of premium platforms now. is it so hard to believe someone might want to go on a date with me? yes. well, thanks very much. daniel, this is really not a big deal. we just had a bit of a flirt, i suppose. aw, please, stop talking now. if it makes you feel uncomfortable... it does... ..then we can talk about it. talking about it makes me uncomfortable. much more fun all around is days of the bagnold summer. a bittersweet coming—of—age movie based on the 2012 graphic novel byjoff winterhart. you're stuck with boring old me for six weeks. monica dolan and earl cave are sue and daniel bagnold who find themselves cooped up together for the summer after daniel's feckless father, who now has a new partner in the states, cancels a florida trip at the last moment. daniel is dissolute and disillusioned, clad from head to foot in black, filling his ears with death metal. monica, meanwhile, favours woollen jumpers and a sunny disposition, something that infuriates her son, particular when she agrees to go on a date with his history teacher, played with maximum smarm by rob bryden. i'd rather like to borrow you for an evening too. sensitively adopted by screen writer lisa owens, and directed with understated deadpan charm by simon bird, this is a little gem of a movie. alternatively laugh out loud funny and piercingly poignant, but always quietly truthful. dolan in particular is terrific as the put—upon mother and librarian who is one of life's unsung heroes. while cave gets daniel's mix of teenage angst and anger just right. in florida where i'm supposed to be with dad. i think he's quite disappointing, to be honest. a solid supporting casting including, tamsin greig and alice lowe, completes the picture, ensuring that even the smaller roles hit home. no, i don't eat meat. you eat the ham that it's wrapped in? yeah, i eat ham. days of the bagnold summer is available from digital stores from monday. what the hell are you doing?! you're gay. i'm not gay. yes, you are. so am i. it's a thumbs up too for dating amber. another coming—of—age tale, this one about the difficulties of coming out. a timely subject sincejune is international pride month. a guide to love—making... fionn o'shea, seen recently in the tv hit normal people, and lola petticrew, play eddie and amber, gay teenagers in ‘90s ireland, who pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend to protect themselves from the schoolyard bullying their sexuality attracts. originally entitled beards, dating amber is a sweet natured, good—hearted film that reminded me a little of the ‘90s brit pic beautiful thing, withjust a hint of the acerbic wit of richard ayoade submarine. writer, director david freyne‘s previous film, the cured, was a low—budget zombie movie which used horror film tropes to explore the contemporary politics of reconciliation. there is a political edge too to dating amber, which is setjust a couple of years after same—sex relationships were legalised in the republic of ireland. but the film's primary register is personal with sharply drawn characters and believable situations generating plenty of laughs and a few tears. it's on amazon prime now. i wish i could be as enthusiastic about guest of honour. the latest typically twisty drama from atom egoyan, the canadian armenian film—maker behind such intriguing fare as exotica, the sweet hereafter and where the truth lies. david thewlis isjim, a recently deceased health inspector who's tangled relationship with his daughter, veronica, is explored through a series of flashbacks that unfold during her conversation with father greg. why? because, i want to go to jail. as with so many of egoyan‘s films, the past is a mysterious land, which is shuffled and restructured, as secrets are gradually revealed. why was veronica in prison? what guilt haunts her memories of herfather? and what's with the rabbit he seems to carry everywhere? the answers, sadly, are nothing like as satisfying as they have been in egoyan‘s previous films, with connections and coincidences contrived to the point of ridicule. thewlis does his best to keep things dour and deep, but i found myself losing patience with the machinations of a plot that stretched credibility to breaking point and beyond. let's do it. music playing if you're looking for something a little lighter, then why not check out echo in the canyon, a misty eyed documentary about the music scene that flourished in la's laurel canyon area in the ‘60s. # i'll grow tired of you...# jacob dylan, son of bob, is our ultra hip host. leading us through a string of interviews with the likes of eric clapton, david crosby, michelle phillips and stephen stills, hosting a 2015 tribute concert and joining the likes of fiona apple, beck, and norah jones performing songs first recorded 50 years earlier. #..lose its desire for you...# they were the powerful band that we all wanted to be. having played the festival circuit for a couple years, echo in the canyon makes some interesting, if hardly ground—breaking, connections between transatlantic music scenes, and features one of tom petty‘s final interviews. that's really, you know, two things clashing together in a huge wave. it also makes regular allusions to jacques demy‘s late ‘60s films model shop which is, to be honest, far more interesting and inventive, and which you can find now on arrow blu—ray. meanwhile, echo in the canyon streams from monday. on the subject of blu—ray, you can own celine sciamma's portrait of a lady on fire, one of my favourite films of recent years, on disk from monday. set in the late 18th century, this is a thrillingly contemporary period piece that reconfirms sciamma as one of the finest film makers of her generation. i will leave you with news that the icelandic offering, woman at war, which played at uk cinemas last year, has just arrived on the streaming service mubi. a jet black comedy drama about in eco—warrior battling the despoliation of planet earth, this terrific oddity has a warmth, wit and wisdom that transcends national and cultural boundaries. it also makes the perfect double bill with the recent icelandic release the county, another tale of a strong woman fighting the good fight in inhospitable yet still breathtaking surroundings. both are highly recommended. that's it. thanks for watching the film review. stay safe and i will be back next week with more home viewing treats. what week with more home viewing treats. is horrible ai everything. what is horrible about them? everything. it isjust a basic black shoe, isn't it? exactly. hello there. the first week of summer has certainly brought a big change in the weather pattern. over the weekend, cool northerly winds, some rain and a good deal of cloud around as well. interestingly, at loftus in redcar in cleveland, there's been more rain in the last week than we've had during the whole of spring. the start of the new week, though, looks a lot drier, the winds won't be as strong either. that's because we've got this area of high pressure, at least the nose of it heading towards the uk. it may not last long, but for a while it will keep those weather fronts at bay from the north—west of the uk. now, many places will have a dry day on monday, the sunshine coming and going. there'll still be a few light showers blown onto some of those north sea coasts. during the afternoon, watch out for some heavy slow—moving showers in wales and the south—west of england. but on the whole, a lot of dry weather around. temperatures not very different from what we had on sunday, but we'll find that the winds are a good deal lighter today. and those light winds continue into the evening. it shouldn't be too long before we see the back of those showers from the south—west, and overnight into tuesday morning, it's going to be dry pretty much everywhere. a fair bit of cloud around, perhaps not quite as chilly across scotland and the north—east of england as it will be first thing on monday morning. moving into tuesday, and there's still quite a lot of cloud in the picture. whilst most places will be dry, there's the odd shower developing through the day ahead of the main change, which is this band of rain here arriving into western scotland and northern ireland. probably very late on in the day on tuesday if not in the evening. temperatures on the cool side for many, 15 to 17 degrees. more significant changes arrive from mid week onwards, we've got that weather front driving some rain southwards, pressure is dropping and we end up with an area of low pressure across the uk on wednesday. we have got some cloud, some outbreaks of rain pushing towards the south—east and while it may brighten up a bit further north, look at the showers developing, those could be heavy and thundery. because there is more cloud and rain around, temperatures will be a bit lower, 14 to 16 degrees. that area of low pressure is still going to be around during thursday and perhaps into friday. it is drifting further south as well. the wetter weather as we head towards the latter part of the week more likely to be across england and wales, we will see that when picking up, but by the end of the week, it could be a warmer wind. this is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. thousands of people across britain take part in more anti racism protests. in bristol a statue of a 17th century slave trader is torn down and rolled into the river. it represents years of hurt and just a lot of emotion and hatred that has been built up inside of us that we have internalised. it is utterly disgraceful and speaks to the act of disorder, public disorder that have now become distracting from the cause in which people are actually protesting about and trying to empathise and sympathise with. in london, a huge crowd gathered at the us embassy — as anger over the killing of george floyd in minneapolis widens to a call for change here — this is the scene live
