There have been more than 500 cases of the disease among those on board. The diamond princess has been in quarantine in the port of yokohama for more than two weeks. In china itself more than 2000 people have now died from the covid 19 virus. And more than 130 deaths were recorded on wednesday in Hubei Province which has been the centre of the outbreak. Lets go live to the dockside in yokohama now and speak to our correspondent laura bicker. Can you explain for is the process of disembarking these passengers . What is going on. 0ver passengers . What is going on. Over the last few hours passengers have been walking off the ship onto buses, some off the ship onto buses, some of them getting into taxis. Most seem to be japanese nationals who can easily make their way home. That it is raising concerns about the whole procedure because within the last few hours, a professor released a video in which he called the quarantine measures that have taken place on the ship over the last two weeks as a major mistake. He has serious doubts about the Infection Control within the ship. There is reason to be concerned because the United States had a charter plane and took their passengers home, about 300 passengers, earlier this week. 14 passengers, earlier this week. 1a of whom eventually tested positive for coronavirus. Just yesterday, 88 new cases were discovered upon the ship. These 500 passengers will be disembarking over the next few hours, they are allowed to go home and have tested negative for the virus. 0thers, home and have tested negative forthe virus. 0thers, over540 passengers, are being treated at nearby hospitals. They have tested positive. Even if someone in the same cabin as you has tested positive, even if you are negative you must remain within quarantine. Japanese Health Authorities say that the reason we see these new cases is simply because of the way the virus is tested. They see these cases were actually contracted, the coronavirus was contracted before the quarantine measures we re before the quarantine measures were put in place on the ship. They say it is perfectly safe for these people to go home. It seems many governments are not convinced. Within the last few hours south korea has said it will ban entry to any foreigners who have come off the ship. The us as well as saying any foreigners trying to make their way home will have to undergo 1a days worth of quarantine and anyone being flown home by their own country is also having to undergo another 1a days quarantine. So there are many questions being asked today about whether or not this cruise ship and these passengers being allowed off could possibly perhaps increase and perhaps i must add this caveat perhaps increase the infection rate withinjapan and elsewhere across the world. We now have incentives in thailand the philippines vietnam, trying to encourage. Trying to encourage local visitors to enjoy what is available there and tourist hubs and the regions are struggling because what happened in vietnam is that it is worried it could wipe out 5. 9 billion dollars of their tourism earnings in the next three months. Lets stay with that now, our correspondent nick beake is in hong kong for us now. Nick, its good to see you. Every day that we speak, the death toll continues to rise. I wonder whether the increases are still at the same pace, or is it slowing down . Hello. Well, the latest figures on the chinese authorities show that now more than 2000 people on Mainland China have died from the coronavirus. So that grim milestone has been passed. At the same time, their figures, which once again we take on trust, there figures show the number of new cases and the number of new cases and the number of new death is falling and continues to fall new deaths. So if these figures are to be believed, it would paint a picture that some of the very tough measures they have been taking appear to be working. If you look at the city of wuhan, 11 Million People live there. If the heart of the outbreak and weather viruses first reported at the end of last year. We are hearing that the authorities are looking at the records of everyone who has been into a pharmacy and bought cough mixture or something from a fever, or bought that online, their records are being examined and officials will follow u p examined and officials will follow up on them. So it is pretty stringent stuff they are doing in Hubei Province. And nick, we have heard there has been a death in hong kong from the virus now. Yes, thats right. This is the second death in hong kong, it is a 70 year old man. The Health Officials are saying he did have other Underlying Health problems. He caught the virus and he died in hospital. That was announced this morning. We know there are 62 cases recorded in hong kong at the moment, but as we say, this man in his 70s, the 70, has been the second person to actually die from the virus there. Any sign ofany die from the virus there. Any sign of any quarantine measures being put in place in hong kong or is that still not the case there . Well, the setup they have at the moment, the rule as suchis have at the moment, the rule as such is that if you come from Mainland China across the border to hong kong, you need to put yourself in quarantine for two weeks. So you either stay at your house or at a hotel or at a friends house, but for two weeks you cant go out. Some people are saying how is that working in practical terms because it is reliant on trust. We know there were two people who came and didnt quarantine themselves and they we re quarantine themselves and they were wa nted quarantine themselves and they were wanted people. The authorities said they com pletely authorities said they completely broke the rules here and this system only works when people do what we ask them to do. They were subsequently found by the authorities and will now face the consequences. That is the measure they have in place here. Worth mentioning some exemptions to that was that if you are a Delivery Driver bringing things over the border to hong kong, you dont need to go into quarantine. Presumably people are being checked medically and they are able to continue theirjob so the flow of goods and other essential things can continue as best it can. Nick, thank you for that. Nick bea ke as best it can. Nick, thank you for that. Nick beake in hong kong. Its 500 years since the death of the italian renaissance artist raphael, famed for his portraits and frescoes. Amidst the magical story of this place was an intense renaissance rivalry between the older michelangelo and the younger, more sociable raphael. The weather doesnt look like its going to be settling down anytime soon, u nfortu nately. We have more rainfall in the forecast, which could exacerbate already existing flooding problems. We still have several severe flood warnings in force. We saw record river levels monday and tuesday across southern and western areas, although those levels have subsided somewhat. However, with more rain in the forecast, piling in during wednesday and thursday, were likely to see those river levels rising again, and we could be looking at more flooding issues. And the heavy rain over the next few days will be focused more across North Western parts of england and north wales, northern and western wales. Now, today it starts off fine and dry, quite chilly, little bit of ice around, but some sunshine, before the cloud thickens up ahead of this weather system which will arrive, bringing outbreaks of fairly persistent rain for Northern Ireland, western scotland into north west england, northern and western wales. Further south and east, some dry interludes, although it will be rather cloudy, and temperatures generally nine or 10 degrees in the south, cooler across the north. Now, it continues to stay wet through wednesday night, and this weather front continues to bring rain particularly into northern and north west england, northern and western wales. This is where well start to see problems arising again. It will be quite a mild night for england and wales. Something colder, though, across certainly the northern half of scotland. So the weather fronts then still with us as we head on through thursday. The good news is, as it starts to move through fairly quickly, it will allow for a little bit of sunshine through the day on thursday. But quite a temperature contrast from thursday morning to what we will expect later on as the colder air moves through. Now, the good news is this weather front will move through fairly quickly across the country through the day, eventually clearing the south east, with some sunshine returning behind it. So a dry afternoon, with some sunshine. That should help issues there. But there will be lots of showers across the north. These will be wintry on the hills, as it will be chilly, but even a chillier day for the south as that front moves through. Notice the isobars increase as we head on into friday. Its going to turn windy and there will be more weather fronts piling in. Were thinking areas to the north of north wales seeing most of the rainfall. Particularly Northern Ireland and western scotland could be very wet, but again, into north west england and north wales. To the south, should see some sunny spells, but the wind gusts mean its going to be a very blustery day, 40 50 mph winds. On the plus side, temperatures in double figures for most, 11 or 12 degrees in the south east. So thats how its looking up until friday, into the weekend. This is the Business Briefing. Im ben bland. Passengers on virus hit diamond princess have begun disembarking. We look at how the cruise industry is dealing with a big downturn in business. And the future of waste.
