bolster their ranks but with the test five days away and the coaches for that new recruits have fitted in seamlessly. it hasn't been difficult, it's been great. the lads are very interactive. it is fantastic because that is what it is all about. not all are so positive, though. england battled their way to a series win on saturday that neither they nor irish players were called up. gatlin thought they were too far away in argentina and japan so too far away in argentina and japan so they weren't considered. england boss eddiejones said the call ups should have been made on merit rather than sheer of —— geography. jetta what he is doing right now is devaluing it and will players on the tournament will say, "you don't deserve to be here". the lions ethos has always been about the greater good. every game has its importance. every time you put on the lions shirt, you have to leave it in a better place than you founded. gatlin was briefly part of the team 11 years ago. on the touchline tomorrow, no thoughts will linger. the chief executive of australia's rugby union bill pulver, has offered to walk away from the job if the board tell him he's not wanted, when they hold an emergency general meeting on tuesday. there is anger from state rugby boards, over a planned decision to cut either the melbourne rebels or the perth—based western force as a franchise. the australian game is in crisis with none of their super rugby teams able to beat their new zealand counterparts this season. add to that, the wallabies shock defeat to scotland last weekend and there is a demand to know where things are going wrong. obviously after that win, a first for scotland in sydney, they believe they're on the brink of something special. attention now turns to the final game of their tour which is in fiji, from where alasdair lamont reports. the altogether more tranquil surroundings in fiji are a marked contrast to the previous legs of the tourin contrast to the previous legs of the tour in singapore and sydney. some of the local inhabitants could have appeared a little more welcoming, though. perhaps wisely, the scotland tea m though. perhaps wisely, the scotland team favoured the pool over the ocean for their recovery session. some more enthusiastically than others. warned the recovery session is required after the monumental effort to beat australia. commentator: scotland the brave! for many, that achievement is still sinking in. it's incredible. this is what it is all about, trying to play international rugby and wanting to do as well as you can. ultimately, we have played for scotland and been in australia and beat in australia. they are rare moments. they continue to improve and it means every chance something like that could happen to again. the coach picking up where his predecessor left off, there is a growing belief that the scottish players could be hitting their peak at the time of the next world cup. how where we did as a squad —— well. it built from there. we have got better and better and obviously, that's the plan. you can't dictate the future or see the future but the plan is to keep getting better and better. if it all goes well and we stay the course, as i said, something special could happen in 2019. the more immediate aim is to make it three wins from three with a victory over fiji before a well earned break although it does seem as if certain players don't want this to end. a lot of emotion in rugby, as in tennis. top seed roger federer will begin the defence of his halle title against taiwan's lu yen—hsun on tuesday. the 18 time grand slam champion is aiming for a record ninth title. but so far his grass court season hasn't gone to plan after the swiss lost to tommy haas, in the first round in stuttgart. it wasn't all bad in stuttgart. i should have won that match against tommy that he played more committed tennis but i did win more points and did have matchpoint, you should find a way and theyjust didn't so it was quite disappointing that i think i could have had a great run. maybe that's exactly the kind of loss i needed to fuel myself for what is to come. the man who's next best seed, austria's dominic thiem is already through to the second round after he was a 7—5, 6—3 winner over germany's maximilian marterer the french open semi—finalist now faces either david ferrer or robin haase. britain's world number one andy murray begins his defence of his queens title on tuesday. he's up against fellow briton aljaz bedene. murray is bidding for a sixth title there. it was where i won my first professional matches so i have a lot of great memories over the years. then my most successful tournament, by far. i love the courts and the conditions here. it's very close to where i live so i get to stay at home. nick kyrgios is already out after retiring hurt in his first round match against the american donald young. the ninth seed received treatment and did continue on before retiring after losing the first set. the 22—year—old says he's aggravated the same hip injury that troubled him during his french open second—round loss to kevin anderson. butjo—wilfried tsonga is through to the second round after a straight sets win over adrian mannarino. after a first round exit on the clay at his home grand slam, the french open, tsonga looked comfortable on the grass in london. despite that defeat in paris, the fifth seed has won titles in lyon, marseille and rotterdam this year. he'll play gilles muller or nikoloz basil—ashvili next. former champion grigor dimitrov is also through to the second round. after he was knocked out in the first round in stuttgart last week, the world number 11 looked back to his best on the grass breezing past american ryan harrison in straight sets. football's world champions germany test drove a younger side against australia at the confederations cup and they were made to work hard to fight—off a second half fightback from australia in sochi. lars stindl opened the scoring for the world champions, cooley finishing this chance in acres of space, before celtic‘s tommy rogic levelled things with this left footed effort. julian draxler extended germany's lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time before leon goretzka extended it with a third minutes after the interval which proved enough for the win. now it's probably just now it's probablyjust believe. we know we can break down teams and to score two goals against germany is a great feat and now it's about not conceding but mind you to pick these young players up and go against cameron bruce of sane effort, same drug. we know we can score goals and get the right result we need to kick on in this group. a bbc sport study has found that the gender prize money gap in sport is closing. 83% of sports now reward men and women equally, according to the study commissioned for women's season of sport. although there are still big disparities, cricket is one of the sports to see prize money increased substantially. these things don't happen overnight. sports are all on their own individual journeys. sports are all on their own individualjourneys. tennis is obviously in a great place for top asa obviously in a great place for top as a team sport, we are at an end —— exciting point, too. over the next few years we will look at the strategic plan to make sure the game can deliver equal prizemoney for men's and women's global events. you can get all the latest sports news at our website — that's bbc.com/sport. but from me randy watson and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello. monday brought the highest temperature recorded in the british isles so far this year and here's one for your diary, if we manage to get as far ahead as wednesday and we're still producing temperatures in excess of 30 degrees, that will be the longestjune hot spell in over 20 years given that by that stage we'll have put together five consecutive days with the temperatures over 30, which we easily exceeded on monday, especially at the hampton water works, 33.5, which beat a number of more recognised holiday locations across the world. there's something of a change in hand for some parts of the british isles, given we're about to see an old weak weather front tumbling its way further south across the british isles, introducing the prospect for some at least of somewhat cooler, fresher conditions. quite a bit of cloud to the eastern side of the pennines and an onshore breeze, all of it helping to cool things. those effects won't be felt across the south—west of england or the south—east of wales, temperatures here perhaps a fraction higher than they were during the course of monday. london, perhaps a little bit cooler here, but as we get up to the north—west of england, still plenty of heat, cooler on the eastern side of the pennines. for northern ireland, scotland, quite a bit of sunshine around but you're on the cooler side of the weather front so those temperatures nowhere near as high as the ones i've indicated in the south. you don't need me to tell you the pollen levels have been extraordinarily high of late, that's the way it stays i'm afraid for much of the british isles through tuesday. the uv levels are also very high and where you get the sun for any length of time you've got to start thinking about protection. from tuesday and into wednesday, as far ahead as that we could still talk about the hot air from iberia and the near continent to the extent that somewhere across the south—eastern quarter we could look at 32 certainly, possibly as high as 34. as is often the way at this time of year, we bring in a little bit of moisture from the atlantic, pushing that heat underneath it, and things could start to go bang quite violently as well. so it's something we're keeping an eye on at this stage. and wouldn't you just know it, we're starting to think about glastonbury as well. notice how those temperatures towards the end of the week begin to tumble away quite smartly, and, as i say, at this time of year the heat can tend to break down in quite violent thunderstorms. wednesday night into the first part of thursday, they could be a real player in the weather scape. eventually we'll see somewhat cooler conditions pushing across much of the british isles but it may take a while before we see these temperatures in much of the south—east beginning to tumble away. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe.
