Now, for the first time, i making a film about my own country from my home in london. La mancha, region two hours south west of madrid has been hard hit by the virus. I make contact with a nurse in the region. Her husband, jesus, is supporting her. Loli and jesus have two children. When the crisis started, she took them to live at her sisters. She hasnt seen them for two weeks but todayis hasnt seen them for two weeks but today is going to visit them to give them their schoolwork. In madrid, the army has turned a Convention Centre in two spains largest medical facility in just ten days. They have even laid medicinal oxygen pipes under the floor. It is now treating hundreds of covid i9 patients. Blanco is a gp who has volunteered to work at this new hospital. The level of police to enforce this lockdown is unprecedented. There are checkpoints on major roads, and aerial surveillance. Her cousin has been in the hospital with the virus. First, they need to collect their ppe first, they need to collect their ppe personal protective equipment. When the crisis started, the Central Government took charge of sourcing ppe, but some local Authorities Say they couldnt do it quick enough. In madrid alone, hospitals need 200,000 masks every day. A couple of hours south of madrid is the source this small village. A group of people have volunteered to make ppe for lolis hospital. This woman has wa nt of for lolis hospital. This woman has want of them. Clinicalfabric is clinical fabric is scarce and the red cross is distributing blankets to operating theatres. This town has a population of 8700. Nearly all of the women in the village havejoined nearly all of the women in the village have joined the effort. Her 58 year old brother in law is in intensive care with covid i9. This evening, her son is volunteering to disinfect the village. Spraying with disinfectant is happening all across spain. The army has been brought in to disinfect the streets, hospitals, and care homes. At home, she keeps sewing. A few days later, her 89 year old mother gets the virus. Esperanca has been helping care for her mum but has to destroy the masks in case they are contaminated. Esperanca and herfamily have they are contaminated. Esperanca and her family have decided that their mother wont be going into hospital. Esperanca and her sister had moved in with their mother. A few days later, esperancas mother dies. Esperanca has contracted the virus too but for now is well enough to stay home. La mancha has had more than 10,000 cases of the virus and she is working 12 hour shifts at the hospital. Undertakers are preparing for a huge numbers of deaths. They have already been 15,000. In door ice rings have been 15,000. In door ice rings have been turned into mortuaries. And families grieve at drive through funerals. Shortly after infections in madrid reach a thousand a day, cases of the virus start to increase in barcelona. Marius is a nurse who volu nteers in barcelona. Marius is a nurse who volunteers to deliver ppe. He is on his way to a nursing home outside the city. Marius is met by the manager. More than 18,300 people have died of coronavirus in nursing homes. That is nearly 70 of all the deaths in spain. When the army was disinfecting care homes, they found 11 people who had been a abandon and some were found dead. The death toll is finally starting to go down, but madrids Field Hospital is still working at full capacity. Blanca and her colleagues work hard to keep morale up. Many of lolas colleagues have caught the virus stop spain has the highest percentage of infected healthcare workers in the world, with at least 15,000 cases. By by the end of april, the number of patients admitted to hospital is going down. This icu team is trying to come to terms with what theyve been through. Before the crisis, spain had a500 intensive care beds, by the end, icus have treated nearly 11,500 patients. Ventilators have been key to expanding the number of icu beds. Eduardo fernandez and his association of entrepreneurs have sourced and donated over 110 ventilators to hospitals all over spain. I asked the Spanish Government about what people had told me in this film. They said ppe and otherforms of medical supplies were provided in the regions at the beginning of the crisis. Today, children under 1a are allowed out for the first time. Spain is the only country in europe where children were not allowed out during lockdown. Lolas children are going for a walk with her sister. Children are still only allowed out for one hour each day and only with the one adult. Madrids Field Hospital has closed, but the oxygen pipes havent been dismantled yet, just in case. Blanca is on her way back to her gp practice. A week later, adults are allowed out at specific times to exercise. Lola has finally been tested, the result is negative stop sue is back with her colleagues, nursing non covid patients. Now she can bring her children back home. And lolas pa rents children back home. And lolas parents have come up for the first time to see their grandchildren. Hello there. Weve seen some unusually windy weather for the time of year affecting the north west of uk in particular. Now, on friday, the strongest gust of wind reached a good 60mph across the north coast of northern ireland, into parts of scotland. And in north west wales, we had a gust into the low 70s of miles an hour. These strong winds have been bringing large and battering waves to the coastline. Many of our beaches are unpatrolled, for understandable reasons, and with similar rough seas expected this weekend, its probably best to stay well away. 0n the weekend, we have more rain and strong winds, thanks to this slow moving area of low pressure. The strongest winds always closest to the centre of the low, passing just toward scotland, and through the day on saturday, although we start off very windy across the north west, the isobars begin to slowly space out, the low pressure starts to get a bit less intense through the afternoon, and the winds will start to lose some of their strength. Here are the temperatures as you start the day on saturday, but blustery winds first thing in western scotland gusts here still reaching a good 60mph and only slowly ease down after that. Northern ireland and scotland scotland, looking wet for most of the day, and quite cool too. England and wales some sunshine. We could see the odd shower just about anywhere but wont last long, given the windy conditions into the afternoon. 30 or a0mph for england and wales but still up ataround 50mph in northern scotland. Now, during saturday night, we do have a bit more rain to come through. That rain tends to ease down as we go through sunday with brighter conditions spreading in from the west. A bit more sunshine to come across these western areas. 17 degrees in belfast, but 22 towards the london area. This warming trend to our weather is set to continue into next week as well as this area of High Pressure builds towards our south. The sunniest weather will always be across england and wales mind you, we could probably do with some rain here. The weak weather front will move in off the atlantic, bringing some rain into western scotland and northern ireland, probably not too heavy. It gets quite a bit warmer across eastern areas of england temperatures reaching the mid 20s and we could see mid to high 20s as we head into the first part of the new week as the weather certainly gets quite a bit warmer.
