From monday, louise and herfamily will be able to meet relatives here in pontypridd with no limit on the head count, but they cant travel more than five miles, so family in the midlands will have to wait. I think theyre making changes according to peoples behaviour. As we can see, people are getting lockdown fatigue and i think people are breaking the rules and being maybe irresponsible, so i think it kind of makes sense this is bbc news. Im Lewis Vaughan jones in a way to be pragmatic. With the latest headlines for viewers in the uk the changes in wales are meant to depend on data rather and around the world. Than a set of dates. The number of new coronavirus live in the us city of minneapolis, protestors ignore the curfew cases has gone down, as demonstrations continue over but the rate at which the virus the killing of george floyd. I spoke with his family today, than it was three weeks ago. Terrific people, i think it is so bad for the memory when you see shops have been told they may be a thing like that going on, able to reopen in three weeks, and hopefully that wont happen but some feel left in the dark. Tonight, and as you know the National Guard has arrived. Sian has several businesses here. In other news she is anxious for pontypridd coronavirus deaths to recover after flooding in brazil pass 27,000, earlier this year, overtaking spain to become the country with but shes frustrated. I think the longer we are dragging ourfeet and were not giving any kind of clarity, its going to harm. Its going to harm businesses, its going to harm peoples mental health. We are behind and its causing issues. The welsh approach is unapologetically cautious. No plans have been announced for schools, as change comes one step at a time. It is quite scary for the students to go out the end of the big world. They have to be in the school for three yea rs, have to be in the school for three years, with the same friends but once you are out there, you have to look after yourself. We try to prepare them for that as a school. Joel kioko is one of our students who is very professional. After hours of technical classes, the stu d e nts hours of technical classes, the students get to practise their own choreography. Third yearjoel kiokos piece is based on swan lake. You can choose any music and then you get for dancers or more. I have three. I do not have a name for it yet. But i have chosen indian music. It is based on contemporary and traditional music. This is the beginning. As well as the movements, he is working out the soundtrack with his classmates. One of the last projects together before leaving college. It is a bit sad because we have known each other for a long time and knowing that, from next year, not going to have each other. It is sad. At this chapter of their lives and, the bonds formed state with students long after they have left. We are very close. I think we have grown more into very good friends. When i first met joel, it was interesting to his story about where he came from. It is really quite amazing and inspiring how far he has come and how lovely he is asa how far he has come and how lovely he is as a person and a dancer. We share a passion. I thinki have gotten closer with most of my school classmates. Everyone has started getting close but at the beginning it was new competition and nobody wa nted it was new competition and nobody wanted to talk to anyone else and it is really lonely. Sometimes you get homesick, i am is really lonely. Sometimes you get homesick, iam not is really lonely. Sometimes you get homesick, i am not going to lie. Sometimes Walking Around london, a picture of my mum on facebook and i am like, yes, i miss my mum. For three years, joel has been living with a London Family so he has four new surrogate families. But soon he will be reunited with his family as he has been offered a unique opportunity to return to nairobi to play radio with the dancer who first discovered him playing juliet. Play radio with the dancer who first discovered him playing julietm play radio with the dancer who first discovered him playing juliet. It is going to be emotional because we share so much and especially with romeo and juliet, it is all about love. I know something good is going to be created. Soon joel will once a ten meet the dancers meet the dancers discovered him as a boy. Once again. So were going to one of the studios in heidi. Going to rehearsal because we only have a week to put this on. Romeo and juliet is being stage under the direct ship of american ballet dancer cooper rust who founded a dancer cooper rust who founded a dance centre in kenya. It is spreading beyond Employment Opportunities in the city which is a 40 unemployment it is an opportunity for people to make a living and i am just as excited about training future dance teachers and having more of these studios around nairobi and kenya as i am about training dancers leaving kenya and going abroad. Annable sure, annabel shaw is on hand to meet him. Romeo and juliet is my favourite ballet. The score isjust romeo and juliet is my favourite ballet. The score is just to die for. When cooper told me five weeks ago, youre going to do romeo and juliet, joel is coming but he is not arriving before a week before the show it was kind of like. 0k. The cast had already been rehearsing for three weeks asjoel cast had already been rehearsing for three weeks as joel arrives cast had already been rehearsing for three weeks asjoel arrives with the Opening Nightjust three weeks asjoel arrives with the Opening Night just seven three weeks asjoel arrives with the Opening Nightjust seven days away. For now i want you to get your tights on. We have rehearsal until seven. Everybody go with your partners. Michelle can help you discuss a lot. Droll is afraid straight in at the deep end as the company begin rehearsals for the ball scene where romeo falls for juliet. I learned a lot of the choreography before hand so juliet. I learned a lot of the choreography beforehand so if at least one of he knows of, you have something to fall back on because we know each other so well, a lot of the figuring out has kind of been done over the years so a lot of the partnership and predicting where the other is going to be and where we fit together, we kind of have done that already so it makes it easier as well. Do it again. Back up and set her back down. I would recommend this with the skirt on the first time. Theyjust have days to learn the ballet. Things do not always go quite to plan, even for experienced dancers like droll. Lets hear this musically, this whole section. Up, up, up. Dance. music playing . By the end of the first day, joel has already learnt the first section. The end of the first day, joel has already learnt the first sectionlj do not even think about it. As long asi do not even think about it. As long as i keep repeating it, it will be there. The movements, i have seen them and i think that is why i remember them. I have seen them before, you know the names, the terminology so i guess that is why it is easier to remember. Through a charity set up by cooper, more children from the slums i hope to have a career in dancing. Cooper sponsors eight of them. To regularly travel to rehearsals after a visit to the families in kibera. Kibera is one of biggest slums in canyon. I love it because i was born there. That is where i started dancing. We learned how to do everything correctly. Arms and put your legs where they are supposed to be than africans, you are just free and you can do anything. I wanted to be a professional dancer when i grow up because i love it so much. With droll as that role model, the young people cooper has fostered believe a career in dance and an escape from poverty is possible. Joel kioko with as their role model. It was a goalfor me, a goalfor our country, not only here but as a country. It shows there is a Bright Future ahead. Dance teachers going out into schools throughout nairobi through the charity are inspiring the next generation of children from the slums. Sometimes the kids come from slums. Sometimes the kids come from slums and they have a lot in their heads so when they dont stay free up heads so when they dont stay free up their minds. The kids can choose what they want after a dance. Maybe i want to be an engineer, maybe i wa nt to ta ke i want to be an engineer, maybe i want to take dance as a career. It is up to us to show them the way. Today the cast are learning this seem where to build skills romaeos friend mercutio and intern romeo exacts his revenge in and is vanished from a varona and intern. Learning the fights is hard, not to mention the acting. You want them to be friends now after 20 yea rs of them to be friends now after 20 years of hating each other. So dont grab it. It is even the fingers in the. Dont. Im serious. Details matter. Its not fingers in front as if you are rubbing it. It is as if you are saying hey, excuse me. Its a very different gesture. As well as the fight scenes, joel must learn the fight scenes, joel must learn the hards the fight scenes, joel must learn the ha rds dance the fight scenes, joel must learn the hards dance with mercutio. When they are not in the main rehearsals, joel and annabelle practice in a side studio. It has gotten on ok. Tiring. But i have got in there. Almost done with the first act. By the end of the third day, joel almost has the ballet done. This is absolutely insane. Him learning all of romeo and juliet in three days. Weve got about six minutes left. An hour and 56 minutes. Hejust has a few minutes left to learn. And it will be done this evening. With the cast just needing to will be done this evening. With the castjust needing to fine tune their routines, joel is absolutely exhausted. Getting the show onto the stage at the Kenyan National theatre seems a long way off. Finally, there isa seems a long way off. Finally, there is a break in rehearsals for romeo and juliet, so annabelle is taking joel to visit his mother. Its going to be nice. Have dinner. Took my mum. Mum many of the families who we re mum. Mum many of the families who were forced to relocate after a massive fire, including angela. Angela has seen her son transformed since the days he started dancing. He told me he was going to dance and then he was dancing, everyday dancing. At first i wasnt taking it seriously. They didnt know that dancing was done for, may be, for a career. Joel regularly turns to where he used to give classes to the children at the angel kindergarten. Meat eating the kids was always fun, stressful sometimes, because they didnt know how they would react to it. You see them smiling, you see them happy. They are talking, they are dancing. I was very eager to learn in the beginning when a started doing ballet. It was through an Outreach Programme like this that joel first met annabelle. We were both really young. I was may be 14 and joel was 13 or both really young. I was may be 1a and joel was 13 or 12. But a sort of spotted doll. He was always coming m, spotted doll. He was always coming in, he was always on time, and he had this beautiful elevation and his long legs when he does. Annabelle decided to invite cooper rust to see joel dance. Immediately a invited him to come. So he could learn to whole school and homeschool and onto dance. Cooper secured an audition for him at the English NationalBallet School. She has pretty much changed a lot of lives. She is a mum to a lot of people. Shes my best friend. While jolt trains, he spent most of the time with his ballet friends at debbie coopers. These are homegrown zucchinis . Cuba is really amazing that she does all of that. I dont think ive met anyone else who can do such brilliance that she does kubot. It really brings us together, we talk about everything. And we just really understand each other. Lets get everything cleaned up tonight and teeth thrust and go to bed and we will make some plans. All . After dinner, cooper has some last minute notes forjoel. All . After dinner, cooper has some lastminute notes forjoel. In the death part there. More emotional . More emotion. By putting your own worst nightmares into it when you are acting it out you have to take it all the way. When youre in the moment its ok and annabelle wont mind. It will help her. I think sometimes youre like. But you have to think. After a latenight theres just time to grab some brea kfast. Theres just time to grab some breakfast. It feels surreal, because, visible, iwould never breakfast. It feels surreal, because, visible, i would never have imagined performing romeo and juliet here. Its something that never crossed my mind even as a role that i would ever get to perform. So im just thankful. They dont know. Its crazy. It is crazy. While the theatre technicians get across the lighting and stage cues, the company have a chance to get used to this space, including a renowned actor playing lord montagu of beaulieu. Space, including a renowned actor playing lord montagu of beaulieum isa playing lord montagu of beaulieum is a wonderful story and they wanted to be on the same story asjoel. These are homegrown superstars. The Kenyan National theatre, the public arrival for the opening gala. The show must go on. Applause. Places were at one places for act one over the next few nights, the nairobi audiences are in for a treat. People are freaking out. They thought this was the best show ever. But thats only because they wont here for last night. Yeah, and they dont know when its not good or not. We can only pray. Music plays. It was amazing to watch, honestly. Just spectacular. From the last time i saw just spectacular. From the last time isaw him just spectacular. From the last time i saw him dance to now, his skill level has improved. It is just fascinating to watch. My thought it was amazing. They enjoyed every second. And it was such a pleasure to look at. The first night of the performance, Opening Night, my mum was there. And i didnt know that she was going to come onstage and give me flowers afterwards the performance, which was pretty good, because i had never gotten a chance like that. So it was lovely for her just to be on stage with me and give me flowers at the end of the performance in nairobi at the Kenyan National theatre and it was critical. They enjoyed it. Back in londonjust a week later, critical. They enjoyed it. Back in london just a week later, the critical. They enjoyed it. Back in londonjust a week later, the harsh reality of exams, assessments, and auditions is beginning to hit home. Today im doing a class with alexander, because im graduating in three months time. Basically the stu d e nts three months time. Basically the students are auditioning for certain companies, ballet companies, contemporary companies. Considering this is the first time he has done class with us, think a lot of it is just being familiar enough with the kind of exercises to be able to learn them and do them quickly, you know. He has got their willingness and the aptitude to try and take risks and explore new things. When were out there just doing our thing, youre happy, youre smiling, soi thing, youre happy, youre smiling, so i think, no, i know that its going to be amazing. Whether he decides to do ballet or contemporary, one things decides to do ballet or contemporary, one things for sure, joels dancing career will take off once this lockdown is over. But, for now, as with most of us, joel and his friends in kenya spent time online taking classes and looking forward to the day they can take to the stage again. Joel, would you like to be our first guest teacher next week . Sure, yes, please. Actually, no, ive changed my mind. All the boys. Ten push ups. Face your camera down. You ready . Ready . Laughter.
