The big impact on borrowers Mental Health and help creditors recoup their money. Its late and cold complaints from rafa nadal, but hes through to the semifinals of the french open. Nadal could equal Roger Federers record of 20 grand slams at Roland Garros after finishing his match at 1. 30 in the morning. Good morning. Showers across northern and Western Areas but for most, a dry day with sunshine. However, cloud will thicken and rain will arrive in the south later and the wind will strengthen across southern areas. Its wednesday the 7th of october. Our top story. Scotlands first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is to announce new measures to try to control growing numbers of coronavirus cases. Its understood there could be further restrictions on hospitality and local travel. Our scotland correspondent, james shaw, reports. The Scottish Government has not said exactly which sectors will be affected by new restrictions. There have been hints hospitality is one area which is being looked at. Lots of factors make it easy for the virus to spread the difficulty of social distancing, poor ventilation, crowds, alcohol and households mixing together. Nicola sturgeon has said schools will stay open and there wont be a scotland wide travel ban, although local travel bans have not been ruled out. We are not proposing another lockdown at this stage. Not even on a temporary basis. We are not going to be asking you to stay inside your own home and, apart from the october holidays, which are already planned, we are not proposing to close schools. Changes could happen as soon as the weekend, when many schools will start autumn half term holiday. Not a happy prospect for those who had been planning to get away or are worried about theirjobs in hospitality. I work in a pub, so that would be hard for me. I would have nojob. But good to protect everyone, i guess. We went 12 weeks of this in march and abided by the rules at that stage. Now were just back where we started. The social aspect, i couldnt do it again, like, not going out and seeing my friends and stuff. Its just. For your Mental Health, as well, just couldnt do it. The big question around a possible Circuit Breaker is will it work . The Scottish Governments Public Health experts believe even a couple of weeks could buy time for the nhs. It might slow the spread of the virus just enough to get the Health Service through the winter months, which are always a challenge and are likely to be even harder in this year of coronavirus. James shaw, bbc news, glasgow. Were joined now by our political correspondent, nick eardley. I suppose the big question is how far restrictions in scotland will go and the other nations will watch that closely. I think that is right. Hospitality will be the main focus i think from the Scottish Government today because remember, people are told not to go to each others houses across scotland. The big concern 110w houses across scotland. The big concern now is the virus is still spreading in pubs and restaurants, so spreading in pubs and restaurants, soi spreading in pubs and restaurants, so i think we will see some sort of crackdown on that, later. Although i am told there are a number of options on the table so when the scottish cabinet meets, that is what they will be discussing. Not all of this will necessarily be scotland wide. There could be local targeted measures but one person in the Scottish Government said to me the measures will be tough, because they are worried about what is happening with the virus. We know the virus is spreading again across the uk in different places. For example, the north east and north west of england, there is real concern about what is happening. We know the government here is reluctant to implement huge new restrictions. They are more reluctant it seems in the Scottish Government. It was interesting having the chancellor on brea kfast yesterday, interesting having the chancellor on breakfast yesterday, where he was talking about the local interventions being the best thing but the truth is in some parts like manchester, where cases are still soaring, they do not seem to be working, so more strict restrictions need to be on the table for ministers in london, as well as ministers in london, as well as ministers in london, as well as ministers in edinburgh. One thing we are seeing more of his questioning of the rationale behind different decisions being made. I think the Scottish Government is conscious of that. I would expect later to get a document in edinburgh that highlights what different measures would mean for the number of deaths over the next months and i am told some of the figures in that are pretty stark. This morning we have the International Trade secretary liz truss at 7 30am, she will be here. The Pharmaceutical Company roche has warned of problems with the supply of coronavirus swabs and nhs tests for other conditions, including cancer. It said problems with a move to a new warehouse had led to a very significant drop in its processing capacity, and although covid 19 tests would be prioritised, it could take two weeks to fix the issue. Us President Donald Trump has said he is ending negotiations over a covid 19 relief bill, and will only resume talks after the election. Mr trump announced his plans on twitter, meanwhile another of the president s senior advisers has tested positive for covid 19. We can speak now to our north america correspondent peter bowes. This still has not ended, how many people close to donald trump has been infected . Yes, the number seems to grow by the day. Stephen miller is the latest of donald trump is my inner circle. He is a scriptwriter. He had been self quarantine having beenin he had been self quarantine having been in contact with some people who tested positive. He is now positive for the virus. This adds to the problem is not only of the president , but the administration. Donald trump pulling out of negotiations for another stimulus bill. The reaction to that has been astonishment, surprise, disbelief, because essentially what the president is doing is telling the American Peoplejust president is doing is telling the American People just before the election that they cannot expect any more economic help for several weeks and possibly not until the beginning of next year. People are puzzled as to what the political strategy is, so close to the election. A theory is the president wants the senate to focus on the confirmation of his nominee for the Supreme Court, as opposed to spending time on the stimulus bill. The other issue is the president ial debate. Tonight it is the Vice President ial debate next week donald trump and joe biden are due to go head to head again. Donald trump said he is looking forward to it butjoe biden said if President Trump is still positive for covid 19, still infectious, that debate should not happen. Thank you. Uk taxpayers may lose tens of billions of pounds because the governments flagship covid loan scheme is at high risk of fraud and of firms being unable to pay the money back. A report by the National Audit office found that the scheme was vulnerable to multiple applications and organised crime. Angus crawford reports. Meet sue and dave, victims of a fraud that came out of the blue. Ive just gone from tears to anger. Now, im going to be scared to do anything. A fake company, a new bank account. Sues identity stolen by criminals. Its got your mothers maiden name. Oh, my god. My god you have set up a business. Sussiebuddy services. Theyre having a laugh, arent they . The gang then got themselves a government bounce back loan in sues name. Im gobsmacked. Absolutely gobsmacked. So you applied for this loan, sussiebuddy services. You are trading as that. 50 grand. At two and a half percent interest. Thats immoral. The bounce back loan scheme was set up by the chancellor in may to help struggling firms. But, today, the National Audit office says there is a very high level of fraud risk caused by self certification, multiple applications, impersonation and organised crime. The Civil Service mentioned to ministers that fraud would be an issue and its only over time that the counter fraud processes have really been embedded. If the estimates prove to be correct, thats a significant loss to the taxpayer. The government says its trying to minimise fraud, with lenders implementing a range of protections. But sue and dave are left worried and angry. Angus crawford, bbc news. One of the worlds greatest rock guitarists, Eddie Van Halen, has died at the age of 65. He had been having treatment for throat cancer. His band van halen had huge commercial success in the 70s and eighties selling more than 80 million records worldwide. Lisa hampele has been looking back on his career. Eddie van halen didnt sound like anyone else. He was said to have a kind of fury. Van halen the band, featuring eddies explosive guitar solos, became a staple of the sunset strip music scene in the 19705 and 80s. They had a string of hits. He was a classically trained pianist and his trademark melodic style and use of harmonics helped make him one of rocks most influential guitarists. He performed with some of the Music Industrys biggest stars, including michaeljackson. Eddie van halen had Health Problems throughout his career and was first diagnosed with cancer 20 years ago. His death was announced by his son wolfgang, a bass player whojoined the band in later years. He said tributes have been flooding in. It is very seldom you meet somebody who is a pure soul, who is a beautiful person. I never once heard eddie ever say anything bad about anybody and especially other bands. As you can well imagine, this business is full of big egos, yours truly included. Eddie was an aw shucks kind of matter of fact guy and i will tell you. Im sorry, i am getting a little choked up. Sammy hagar, the bands formerfront man, who departed under acrimonious circumstances, shared a picture of the two of them with the words heartbroken and speechless. And thousands more have paid tribute to one of rocks superstars. We shall pay tribute to him later in the programme, as well. A newborn is not usually something that comes as a surprise, but staff at chester zoo were left baffled at the arrival of a bornean orangutan. Keepers had done multiple tests on the mother leia, but failed to spot the pregnancy. The baby was born injune, but leia had kept it mostly hidden since its birth. This is her second baby conceived as part of a Breeding Programme at the zoo. Do we know the name of the baby . No. That is absolutely adorable. You were at chester zoo recently. Idid not you were at chester zoo recently. I did not see her. I was there talking to sir david attenborough. In fact, it is where the orangutans will be moved. More animals on the programme later. Fat bears. And tiny ones, also. Now the weather with carol what is happening . Good morning. This morning it is not a particularly cold start. For most it will be drier than yesterday. But there are showers particularly in there are showers particularly in the north and west and also windy here, then the cloud will thicken and rain will arrive in the south west later. You can see the cloud we currently have. This band i wa nt to cloud we currently have. This band i want to draw your attention to, an area of low pressure that has two front surround it and that will bring the rain. This morning a lot of dry weather, high cloud, some sunshine. Showers in the north and west of scotland. We can see one of those coming in for example across north west england. But in the afternoon the rain comes in across the south west of england and south wales. If you had showers this morning in Northern Ireland and wales, many will fade, and dry weather across scotland away from the north and west. And these are the north and west. And these are the temperatures. As we head through the evening and overnight, watch what happens. The first front comes through which will bring gusty winds and also heavy rain, particularly in the north midlands, north west england and wales, as it d rifts north west england and wales, as it drifts northwards and eastwards. This is the second front. It will not be particularly cold but under clear skies further north, it will feel cooler. Also they could be fog here. Tomorrow the rain clears fairly quickly and then we have the second sinking south. It will leave residual cloud across parts of lincolnshire and east anglia. Showers across the north and west but in between, sunshine. More details in half an hour. Thank you. Lets take a look at todays papers. The daily mail reports 4,000 doctors and medical experts say have grave concerns about the response to coronavirus adding life should be allowed to return to normal for all but the elderly and vulnerable. The times also leads on the coronavirus saying surging infection rates are putting britain on the brink of tougher lockdown measures. The governments scientific advisers have called for urgent and drastic action after cases doubled in 11 days. The guardian says three of the largest universities in the uk have called a stop to face to face teaching. More than 80 universities in the uk have reported at least 5,000 confirmed covid cases. I found this on the inside pages. You know i like eggs. What is your top leg . Fried egg. Followed by . How do you feel about poached eggs . No, i cannot make a poached egg, which i know is shocking to you. Walk into my kingdom, please, this is my area of expertise. A survey has talked about the most popular eggs in britain. And the most popular is boiled egg with soldiers. Followed by scrambled egg, poached egg, and an omelette came in fifth according to research by an egg company. I know i am obsessed with eggs, but bear with me. Eggs tell you about your personality. So you like an omelette. If you like an omelette, you are the most passionate person. Scrambled egg lovers are said to be go getters. Poached egg lovers are said to be generous and fried egg eaters are caring and thoughtful. A hard boiled egg, you are brainy and well read. Needa said she likes a soft boiled egg. They are big earners with high flying careers. When i am in london i talk to people and get directions and people are friendly. It isa directions and people are friendly. It is a case of open conversations. We are talking about debt letters, around Consumer Credit. You borrow money on cards. There are rules that regulate how lenders should behave when they deal with borrowers. The problem is the rules are a0 years old and include a section on what happens if you fall behind on payments. Letters are sent. Often they are in block capitals. Look at that. Overwhelming and confusing language. Campaigners say using letters that appear to be shouting things may send people who are already feeling vulnerable and out of control into a panic. They were designed to give clear guidance, but often they have the opposite effect. A Charity Claims people in problem debt are three times more likely to have considered suicide than people who are not, so language is crucial when it comes to encouraging people to act. We have been speaking with steve who found his finances spiralling out of control after he and his wife lost theirjobs. They had to move house with one baby and another on the way. Without knowing it, i was probably suffering with severe depression and anxiety and when the letters come, it makes you feel a let down to your family, like you are not providing for your family and you have got them into a situation. It makes me feel even lower. The debt letters kept pushing to the point that there was a time after we had kind of gone debt free i felt a complete failure and i considered taking my own life. I felt a complete failure and i considered taking my own lifelj i felt a complete failure and i considered taking my own life. I am pleased to say steve is doing well now and works for a debt charity advising people stop the government has announced today it agreed with campaigners and laws around the wording of letters will change so they feel less threatening. The bold lettering will be reduced, legal terms translated into straightforward language, and people will be guided towards debt support services, and those changes will come into force from december and the hope is it will help those struggling and also help creditors to get cash back. The banks have welcomed the news and we will be speaking to martin lewis later because he has campaigned for the letters to change. If you have any questions for martin lewis, get in touch. Your e mail address is there so you can send it and we will sort it out later. With all the ongoing uncertainty over the health of donald trump, it is easy to forget sometimes that the us president ial election is less than a month away. Tonight in utah, the democrat Vice President ial candidate Kamala Harris and current vp mike pence, will go head to head in a debate. Our north america correspondent sophie long has more. Judge kavanaugh, i am concerned whether you will treat every american equally. She is a senator from california known for her incisive questioning of President Trumps nominees for the Supreme Court. I know full well the importance of president ial leadership. He has been President Trumps right hand man for the past four years. Tonight they will take to a specially adapted stage for a debate that will be watched by tens of millions of voters. Vp debates are not normally the headline act of a president ial Election Campaign but this one is anything but normal. Given the age of their bosses and the fact that President Trumps recent hospitalisation with coronavirus means we dont yet know if the remaining two president ial debates will even take place, tonights meeting between Kamala Harris and mike pence will be the most important of its kind in history. They take over under the death or the resignation of the president of the united states. When you have one candidate thats fairly old and one candidate thats sick right now, everyone is talking about it. Theres no way that you cant talk about that particular issue because there is at least some track where one of these two candidates could end up being president of the united states. We are an independent collection of latter day saint women from across the political spectrum, who speak for ourselves. In this deeply religious state, President Trumps first term and his reaction to covid 19 has led lifelong republicans to look for something different. I wish no ill will towards him. I wish no ill towards him. But i think that its time for us to once again think about doing better. This should have never been a critical issue. Coronavirus should have been something where we all come together and Work Together for the good of everyone. And thats why character matters in a president. But at this pro trump potato bar, yes, there is such a thing, people think his personal handling of the pandemic is a show of strength. When youre a soldier, youre at risk and youre at a war, and youre fighting something, you go in there and youve got to rally your troops. Youve got to build the morale of the troops. You got to be victorious, you cant be afraid. And thats what i look at it as. And unfortunately, some soldiers when they go to war, they get wounded. Tonight, mike pence will be going into battle for the current commander in chief against a former prosecutor fighting for his competitor, joe biden. With less than a month to go and a campaign thrown into chaos by covid 19, the stakes are high. Sophie long, bbc news, salt lake city. It is interesting. For more on a rapidly changing situation we are joined by a political analyst, the man who never seems to sleep another member of the president pulls my inner circle is confirmed testing positive for coronavirus. Does it come back to the event in the rose garden . Do we know where they were infected . We still do not know where they were infected, and we do know the white house has rebuffed any overtures from the disease and prevention to help with Contact Tracing. It appears as though the white house, like so much in terms of their handling of the virus, well let this go by the wayside are not really address how it happened as a means to keep it from happening again. The president enjoys stirring up controversy, particularly via social media, and he seems to have got himself in hot water with the statement about covid 19 being less lethal, i think his words were, then influenza. The president lashed out at social Media Companies for placing a warning on the president s statement suggesting it was misinformation. We know more than five times the number of people have died this year from coronavirus than have died from the flu in the past five years. Clearly this is a deadly virus we are seeing, with not only more than 200,000 dead, but more than 7 Million People already infected. You talk about the number who have died and been impacted by that, and the business ramifications. With that in mind, his tweet about ending negotiations with congress over the stimulus bill, putting it to after the election, how has it gone down . Not well, particularly when you look at the stock market, which the president has used as a barometer for his success as president. Now we see the stock market doing a major creator today and this is just before the election and now you have millions of americans out of work, struggling to make ends meet, and now the president has abruptly called an end to negotiations on funding for businesses, states, schools, and for americans out of work, until after the election. Schools, and for americans out of work, untilafterthe election. Not a good look when the president is already behind. Latest polls show he may be behind as many as 16 points. It will only create more pressure on mike pence as he prepares for his debate against Kamala Harris. |j wa nted debate against Kamala Harris. |j wanted to ask about the Vice President ial debate. We were told it is so important for them and also millions watching. Would you share the assessment it is a crucial debate . Absolutely, i think this will probably be the most watched Vice President ial debate sincejoe joe Vice President ial debate sincejoe joe biden debated Vice President ial debate sincejoe joe biden debated sarah pay lynn in 2008. Clearly one of these two candidates will at some point likely have to step in and assume the role of commander in chief and so they will watch to see if they can fill those shoes. Great to get your assessment. Thank you. And we will be speaking to a gp about what is going on here. Right now the news where you are. Good morning from bbc london, im tolu adeoye. Thames water has apologised after a major main burst affecting at least nine postcode areas in east london. People complained of low pressure or of being without water entirely. The company said its specialists were working to get things up and running as quickly as possible. Meanwhile tankers have been brought in to help. The mayor of london is calling on the housing minister to do more to help londons homeless this winter amid increased risks to health because of the pandemic. Sadiq khan has warned hundreds face freezing nights on the streets or risk catching coronavirus in communal shelters. He says urgent clarity and guidance is needed on covid secure accommodation. The government has yet to respond. Events are up and running across london this week as part of the annual frieze london art fair. Some of the events will be digital, but there are galleries hosting socially distanced exhibitions with a hub focusing on the world famous cork street. The galleries have really come together as a community. Cork street is hosting a huge amount of activity with pop ups from colleagues across the west end. And you can really use this as a base to explore the entire spectrum of art across london, and even pick up a map that is printed by galleries now to really identify and find all these great galleries across the city. And all these exhibitions are being put on for free. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. Theres a good service on the tubes but there are minor delays on the overground between euston and watford junction and stratford and richmond and claphamjunction because of signal failure. On the trains, theres a major problem on the west coast main line with most services out of euston suspended thats due to signalling problems. On the roads, there are queues towards the blackwall tunnel northbound. Finally, in the city, ludgate hill is closed due to gas leak from Cannon Street to ludgate circus. Now the weather with elizabeth rizzini. Hello, good morning. A decent day of weather for us today across the capital. It should stay dry and there will be plenty of brightness and sunshine around as well. Just the right amount of high cloud for a very pretty sunrise for most of us this morning. Temperatures are in double figures, so there will be plenty of sunny spells as we head through the day, probably the sunshine best into the afternoon. Quite a brisk and noticeable westerly wind blowing, top temperatures around 16, maybe even 17 celsius for a few more favoured spots. But overnight tonight, it is all change. We will see some rain pushing up from the south. Most of this rain will tend to be quite light and patchy, and it will turn very windy into tomorrow morning. Some very mild air coming through so temperatures generally staying below the teens overnight tonight. So its a windy start to the day tomorrow, there will be some outbreaks of rain around for a time, its quite grey and drizzly but it could brighten up as we head towards the end of the afternoon. Mostly dry for the start of the day on friday, there will be some rain later, some rather chilly nights as we head into the weekend. Im back with the latest from bbc london in half an hour. Well be paying tribute later. Good morning, heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news. Scotlands first minister is due to announce new measures later this afternoon, aimed at slowing a surge in coronavirus cases. Nicola sturgeon has already stressed the new rules will not signal a return to full lockdown, even for a short period of time but there has been speculation travel restrictions could be imposed in areas with higher levels of the virus. Theres a warning that the governments flagship Covid Business loan scheme could eventually cost the taxpayer up to £26 billion. A report by the National Audit office says the scheme is vulnerable to fraud and some firms may be unable to pay the money back. It comes after a bbc investigation revealed criminals were setting up bogus firms using stolen information and successfully applying for the loans. Last month was the warmest september on record across the world. It was 0. 05 celsius hotter than the same month last year, which in turn was the previous record holder. The heat contributed to record wildfires in california and australia, and to the hottest day recorded ever in californias death valley. Tens of thousands of patients across the uk are having to find new gp surgeries as many close their doors. A freedom of information request by the pulse medicaljournal revealed 99 practices closed last year. Lets get more on this with our gp, doctor rosemary leonard. Good morning, thank you forjoining us. Of all the time for gp surgeries to be closing, this is a tough one, whats happening . A lot of these we re whats happening . A lot of these were surgeries where the gps were coming up to retirement, some of them were single handers, and there has been a shortage of gps across the country, particularly gps willing to take on the running of a practice. So we had one that closed near us, a single handed gp, he retired, and the patients were allocated to new gps. In london and big cities, come off and you dont have to travel that far but it is a huge disruption of you dont have to travel that far but it is a huge disruption to suddenly have a new gp after many years. But in rural areas, you have to travel many miles more to access gp surgeries. That will impact many things including stress levels for patients. Yes, generally now at least, it used to be that paper notes took ages, months to transfer. At least computer records transfer quite quickly. But your new gp will not know your medical history like the old one, they have to check through which medications you have, do you need a medication check. The other thing which has been in the news today, blood tests, have you had them done recently, checking through old records. It is hugely disruptive and very stressful particularly for older patients and those with long term conditions. Older patients and those with longterm conditions. Lets talk about whats going on with coronavirus. The daily hospital admissions, looking at the numbers, up admissions, looking at the numbers, up to a96, the biggest number in four months. What is your assessment, where are we at the moment . Its a chilly quite difficult to say because hospital admissions normally go up at this time of year. We are heading into winter. Normally we have a lot of people, thousands of people being admitted to hospital at this time of year every day with respiratory illnesses, with pneumonia. One of the difficulties about these figures is that the figures are people who have a diagnosis, they have had a test for covid but we do not know whether they are actually ill because of covid or they got covid along with Something Else like a more standard bacterial pneumonia. But it does look as if hospital admissions because of covid are probably on the rise a bit. We also know that the number of people testing positive for covid is up, some of that is explained by doing more tests. I suppose, would you describe it as a second spike or is it too difficult to know right now . It is. What we are seeing is a lot of positive tests in young people who, yeah, a lot of them feel pretty rough, but theyre not that ill. Back when we had the first wave, we couldnt get. A lot of people can get tested and a lot of people had the virus are never really knew, never had a diagnosis that they had it. So we dont really have exact figures of how many were affected in the first wave. But it does appear, particularly in the north and the north east, there is. It could be a delayed first wave, there were far more cases down here in the south early in the spring, and now it seems the focus of where the disease is spreading has gone further north. We see that reflected in the figures as well. We know that lots of parts of the north west and north east have local restrictions and there own local lockdowns. When will be able to see, because the numbers are going up all the time, when would you expect to see a difference in the numbers . There are some indicators that the numbers in terms of people with the disease is levelling off, but there is also a delay in hospital admissions and death rates compared to the number of tests. We know there is a two to three week lag between the peak when you are testing positive and u nfortu nately you are testing positive and unfortunately the number of people who die. So its going to be another couple of weeks, probably, until we see whether those lockdown measures are having an effect, and what we wa nt to are having an effect, and what we want to see it as if it has an effect on Vulnerable People being admitted to hospital. Lets talk about the flu, it is flu jab season, it is important to get it, are you managing to get them out . Yes, we have supplies, like all gps, supplies that come in in patches because a fridge space, thats the main reason, we can only store so many. Normally at this time of year if someone comes in and they have not had it, we would give it optimistically. In my surgery back so many others, we have a senior administrator who has allocated to flu jabs to the most Vulnerable People. We can virtually label every flu jab in our fridge, people. We can virtually label every flu jab in ourfridge, at least she could, shes amazing, saying that is for that person, and dont you dare give it to anyone else, we have to give it to anyone else, we have to give it to the most vulnerable first. We have had patients getting angry with the receptionist saying, i want my flu jab now. What are trying to do is allocated on a needs basis. The really vulnerable get it now and as they have had them, going further on, we are getting supplies coming in, but they are in batches. We then spread them out to those who are slightly less vulnerable. Who still need them but not quite as much as those who we are giving them to now. Thank you very much for your time, doctor leonard, as ever. Jane has the sport. We are starting with ref on the dial, winning again . With rafael. With ref on the dial, winning again . With rafael. Yes, what you expect its been a french open like no other, but there is at least some consistancy, rafael nadal marching towards the final in paris. Hes through to the semi finals after a straight sets win against the italianjannik sinner. The match started late, and then finished very late, it was almost 1. 30 in the morning when nadal was finally victorious. Thats the latest ever finish at Roland Garros. Nadal can equal Roger Federers record of 20 grand slams if he wins in paris, but he wasnt happy with the playing conditions. The problem is the weather. It is too cold to play. Honestly, it is very, very cold to play tennis. I know Football Players play under these conditions, but it is a little bit different, because they are all the time moving. Now, we stop, we come back. We stop on the changeovers. You know, it is a sport where you are stopped a lot of moments. So i think it is a little bit dangerous. We will get him some gloves nadal will play argentinas Diego Schwartzman in the semis after he beat the us open champion dominic thiem. This was an epic match, going to five sets and they played forfive hours in paris. There was a big upset in the womens draw too. Elina svitolina, the highest ranked player left in the competition, was knocked out by qualifier nadia podoroksa. The argentine is ranked 131 in the world and is the first female qualifier ever to reach the semi finals at Roland Garros in the open era. The police have decided not to prosecute england players tammy abraham, jadon sancho and ben chilwell for attending a Surprise Birthday Party for abraham where there were more than six people. All three have apologised but are still to hear if theyll be dropped from the england squad. They have all been reminded by manager Gareth Southgate about the standards they should set. Obviously, a lot of people around the world look up to us as footballers, and we have that responsibility. We know that and like i say, weve been reminded of that in this camp. So everybody is well aware. And im confident that no one else will make any mistakes. So, yeah, we are obviously disappointed the lads arent here, we wanted to see them, there are friends and at the end of the day we want to see them and catch up with them but hopefully theyll be here soon. A petition backed by the English Football League asking the government to reconsider letting football fans back into stadiums has gathered more than 100,000 signatures. Plans for more test events were abandoned last month as stricter social distancing measures were brought back. Now that the petition on the official Parliament Website has passed the 100,000 signature mark, the government will have to debate the issue in parliament. And finally, yesterday we brought you the news that arsenal were letting club mascot gunnersaurus leave after 27 years. Well, hes been thrown a lifeline by midfielder mesut ozil. The german has offerded to pay the wages ofjerry quy, the man who plays gunnersaurus, for as long as he remains at arsenal. Beautiful, that, isnt it . Ithink quite a few arsenal fans were really gutted. He is a stalwart. Its very generous, but the cynics among us might say that it is a pr exercise. How dare you, jane apparently it is 30 grand a year, for dressing up as gunnersaurus. Not bad if you can get it. Well done, message herself well done, ozil with Remembrance Day just over a month away, youd normally expect to start seeing many poppy sellers appearing in yourarea. But with thousands of collectors shielding, thats not possible this year. So the Royal British legion have had to think of different ways to make poppies available. Breakfastsjohn maguire has been finding out how this years appeal will work. Its quite calming because you dont realise youre doing it. Its mesmerizing to watch Jeanette Connell create her crochet poppies. More than 30 years ago, she suffered a brain haemorrhage and now has only 3 of her vision left. She took up crocheting these intricate poppies after the death of her mother and now makes thousands to sell for the Royal British legion. I love doing it because i know its a good cause. I didnt know what to do so what i done is be positive and i thought, well, if i cant do this, i can do Something Else. And this is where i find that i can do something. I probably crochet, not realising that im not looking, im just doing. But i find that comforting. And ill probably be doing this for a long time. But this year its different. Due to covid, shes unable to take up her usual post crocheting and selling in a local supermarket. So theyre Available Online and her hairdressers helping out. She calls in to check on sales. Jeanette has asthma, so doesnt wear a mask. How are you . Got lots of poppies. Just before lockdown, the d day veteran Harry Billinge was awarded the mba by the queen in recognition of his fund raising for a memorial to his fallen colleagues. He understands there will be restrictions this autumn, but is determined to carry on in his comrades memory. Im positive ill be able to collect more money in october and christmas time than ive done in the past. And it means so much to you, this memorial, doesnt it . Oh, yes, yes, it does. More than i cant, im overwhelmed. I cant even talk about it, because ill get tears in my eyes, when ill think and i cant forget. And im not able to forget. And i dont want to forget either, really. And its that remembrance that inspires fundraising by veterans and so many others. Vera parnaby has been collecting for more than 70 years and amassed a total of over £1 million. It means a lot to her. Well, this is one of the poppies and that was in place at the tower of london. And unfortunately, i was too late to purchase one. The following day, at conference of the womens section, there was a raffle. And hey presto, i won. Shes known in County Durham as mrs poppy and has already started preparations knowing there will be restrictions this year. We wont be allowed to go on the street this year because we have to have no social contact with people. Every year, you know from your previous record whats expected and you try to beat it. And we have been doing that but after raising 3a,000 odd last year, i dont think well get that this year. But fingers crossed, you never know. So what has been so successful for so many years will need to change for this remembrance season. But what wont change is the belief, the commitment and the dedication to helping and honouring those who served and those who made sacrifices. John mcguire, bbc news. And you can download your own poppy now by visiting the Royal British legion website, britishlegion. Org. Uk. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Good morning to everyone. Some of us starting the day with some clear skies, as you can see in lincolnshire, so today there will be a fair amount of sunshine around. It will be much drierforemost than sunshine around. It will be much drier foremost than it will be yesterday. Starting off with showers in the north and west and later the cloud with thicken and rain coming and accompanied by gusty winds. This area of cloud i want tojoin and accompanied by gusty winds. This area of cloud i want to join your attention to, this is an area of low pressure with two weather fronts coming our way later tonight bringing some heavy rain. A lot of dry weather and sunny skies to look forward to this morning and showers packing in on the north westerly wind across the north and west of scotland. You can see already by the time we get to apm, we will have rain across South West England and south west wales. Away from that, showers across Northern England fading this morning leaving you with a dry afternoon with some sunshine but the showers across the north of scotla nd but the showers across the north of scotland continuing, breast of scotla nd scotland continuing, breast of scotland dry with sunny skies. Temperatures 11 to 16 degrees. This evening and overnight, this first front brings in some heavy rain across parts of the north midlands, north england and north wales. It will be pushing north and east accompanied by gusty winds. To the north of that, clear skies and mist and fog forming, and cooler. Fairly mild underneath the cloud and heavy rain. Tomorrow the first front clears and the second one slips steadily southwards before it too will eventually move away. It will leave quite a bit of cloud in its wake, particularly across east anglia and lincolnshire. Then it brightens up, many of seeing sunshine through the afternoon but still showers across the north and west. Temperatures between nine and 17 degrees. Into friday, more rain will be coming our way overnight on thursday into friday, through Northern Ireland and pushing steadily eastwards. We are looking ata steadily eastwards. We are looking at a wet afternoon across england and wales. For scotland and Northern Ireland, some showers but in the east, something drier and brighter. As we head into the weekend, things change touch. A ridge of High Pressure builds in settling things down, but we will have a northerly wind, a cooler direction bringing some showers across northern scotland, and also down the east coast in particular. So it is going to feel much cooler than it has done, especially when you add on the strength of the wind. These are the damages you can expect, 11, 12, 13, 14, damages you can expect, 11, 12, 13, 1a, compared to 17 which we are expecting today. Into the new working week, the High Pressure will stick with us for a little while but still the risk of weather fronts around the top of it, so we might see some rain at times or showers. After this unsettled spell, things settle down a touch as we head into the weekend. Thank you, carol. Tributes from across the music world are being paid to guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who has died at the age of 65. The co founder and lead guitarist of van halen, the band had its biggest hit with jump in 198a. Hes largely considered one of the best rock guitarists in history. We can speak now to mark weiss who photographed van halen throughout their career. Thank you so much forjoining us from newjersey on breakfast, good to talk to you. When did you start working with him and the band first . 1979, over in newjersey. It was their second album and theyjust started playing theatres and they we re started playing theatres and they were selling them out. I was on assignment with circus magazine, i was 19 and really excited to shoot the band. The crowd was amazing, and the band. The crowd was amazing, and the band, they were like four front men. Everyone of them, alex, michael, eddie and david. It was amazing and it was one of the first band that i actually shot for the magazine. We are seeing some of your pictures now, give us an idea what eddie was like onstage and offstage. Well, offstage and onstage, he seemed like the same person because he was always smiling. Just smiling all the time. If he wanted to do something, he would smile, if you didnt want to do it, he would still smile and do it. He wasjust didnt want to do it, he would still smile and do it. He was just one didnt want to do it, he would still smile and do it. He wasjust one of those guys who made you feel really co mforta ble those guys who made you feel really comfortable and he knew you were there for a reason and he let you do what you needed to do. When i went back into the dressing room to take some photos, he would let me be a fly on the wall and i would just leave him be and we had a Good Relationship through the decades. Leave him be and we had a Good Relationship through the decadesm he was always comfortable in front of the camera, just sort of natural . Yeah, he wasnt a big fan of the camera but he welcomed it. He welcomed it, and always gave me what i wanted, if i told him, moved to the left a little bit, he would, if isaid the left a little bit, he would, if i said move to the right, he would. And he was always smiling, if you look at all of the photos, his was having a good time. Some lovely tributes paid over the last few hours of so many people who were with him at the time, amazed by his musical ability. In so many later generations who were inspired by his work. Absolutely, i mean, he will go down in history, he is in history, generations to come. You know, such an amazing talent. Some people are just gifted, and he tickets to the limit. Do you think he took it to the limit. Do you think, the rock star status, did that sit well with him . I dont think he thought of it, i dont think it he was affected by it. He likes his privacy, if a fan came up to him, he would be nice to them. I dont think he thought of himself as a rock star. He knew he was a rock star, but i dont think he wanted to think of himself as one, hejust he wanted to think of himself as one, he just wanted to be thought of as someone who was honing his craft and playing in front of people. Would you have a favourite memory of him down the years . Yeah, when mtv had a contest called the last weekend, and these two guys from pennsylvania one, and im from jersey, we got on a plane together, we blindfolded them, went to the show and we had a party for three days. It was really fun, it was a fun time. I remember eddie was backstage, and his wife valerie was backstage, and his wife valerie was back there, and i was taking photographs of eddie with his guitars and valerie walked in. And she said, oh, sorry. Isaid, no, please, get in a photo, please. Sure enough she got in the shot, but a cigarette in her mouth and drank a beer. Pictures like that are just memories. Something like that, you get close to an artist, the paparazzi were following them around by then. And they let me take the photographs and i really kept them under wraps, actually, until recently. That particular photograph, i had a book came out recently and they have some of those memories in the of the decade that rocked. Lovely to speak to you today, thank you so much for coming on and sharing a very personal memories of time spent with Eddie Van Halen. Thank you. That may go down as one of my favourite bookcases of lockdown. A cool bookcase lets get the news and travel wherever you are. Good morning from bbc london, im tolu adeoye. To be able to welcome them into the Rugby Society, to see them being able to build their skills and to grow and develop as part of a team, i think will be a fantasticjourney. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. Theres a good service on the tubes. Just the ongoing closure of the waterloo city line. On the trains theres a major problem on the west coast mainline with most services out of euston suspended thats due to signalling problems. On the roads the a13 is slow into Central London from dagenham to barking finally, in Central London, Regent Street is shut northbound towards Oxford Circus due to a gas leak. Bye for now. Best into the afternoon. Good morning welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today. Scotland faces tighter restrictions to control the growing number of covid cases. Daily covid hospital admissions in england are at a four month high, rising by two thirds in the past week. Tributes are paid to rock legend Eddie Van Halen, whos died at the age of 65. If you ever saw that band live, when eddie played guitar, he would be smiling from ear to ear. Rafa nadal wins late, and in the cold at the french open. He wins at 1 30 in the morning in paris, and remains on course to equal Roger Federers record of 20 grand slam titles. They will be driving yesterday for most. And later some rain coming in across the southwest. All the details in about ten minutes. Lots of factors make it easy for the virus to spread the difficulty of social distancing, poor ventilation, crowds, alcohol, and households mixing together. So much to talk about. Were joined now by our political correspondent, nick eardley. Nick, how far could these new restrictions in scotland go and could we see the same in rest of the uk . Good morning. Ithink good morning. I think the restrictions we will see in scotland later today will be pretty tough. They are likely to focus on hospitality, because at the moment you cannot go into someone elses housein you cannot go into someone elses house in scotland, and some of sturgeon s advisers think the big problem is people beating in pubs and restaurants. I expect there would be stringent measures taken there. The scottish cabinet meets in about an hour to make the final decisions. As we know, it is not just scotland where the virus is increasing rapidly. There are parts of the north of england that are really concerning to the government. It poses that question, are the government in westminster going to going to have to start looking at stricter measures about potentially having to close some hospitality venues having to close some hospitality venues to try and get a grip on this. It is something ministers are relu cta nt to this. It is something ministers are reluctant to do. We know they are worried about the economic impact. I think there will be questions asked about whether if scotland is doing it, why the rest of the uk is not. Also interesting, last night in the house of commons, where a lot of tory mps questioned the rules, particularly the rule of six, saying they do not understand the number six, and why children are included when they are less likely to spread the virus. There is the question over the evidence. One thing i expect to happen in edinburgh later is the Scottish Government will publish evidence to show why it is making its decisions on what different scenarios could mean. Some of the numbers are said to be quite scary. Thank you. Us President Donald Trump has said he is ending talks over a covid 19 relief bill, and will only resume talks after the election. He predicted he would win next months election and pass a bill afterwards. Democratic president ial nominee joe biden said mr trump had turned his back on the American People. One of the worlds greatest rock guitarists, Eddie Van Halen, has died at the age of 65. He had been having treatment for throat cancer. His band had huge commercial success in the seventies and eighties selling more than 80 million records worldwide. His death was announced by his son wolfgang, a bass player who joined the band in later years. And fellow american musician johnny nash has died at the age of 80, his family have said. I can see clearly now the rain has gone. I can see all obstacles in my way. The singer songwriter is best known for his reggae inspired 1972 single i can see clearly now, which sold more than a million copies. His son said his father died at home of natural causes. Such a lovely song. It is beautiful. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. That is looking rather lovely also. Very apt weather today and are very apt to song. Today will be much drier, brighter, some sunshine. Clear skies in london at the moment as they are in other parts of the uk, but some rain on the way, coming in across the south west later and currently we have showers, particularly across the north and west of scotland. A lot of dry weather, gusty winds across parts of scotland, through the afternoon the cloud will thicken across wales and the south west of england, heralding the south west of england, heralding the next band of rain and hear the wind will strengthen. Temperatures 1116. If wind will strengthen. Temperatures 11 16. If we look at the rain, it will be heavy as it moves across during the evening and overnight, sweeping in across the south west, wales, and north west england. With High Pressure, it will kill off showers in Northern Ireland and Northern England, but we hang onto them across the north and west of scotla nd them across the north and west of scotland where it will be windy. The rest of scotland dry with sunshine. Here comes the first band of rain bringing heavy rain to wales, north midlands. It will steadily eastwards during the night. In northern scotland, some mist and fog. Here are cooler and still miles further south. Thank you, carol. Nice to see you. Additional lockdown restrictions will almost certainly be put in place in scotland in the next couple of days. First minister, Nicola Sturgeon has said. So what is the Current Situation there. Yesterday, 800 new cases of coronavirus were announced across the country. 262 people are currently being treated for coronavirus in scotlands hospitals, and 25 patients are being treated in intensive care. More than 2,500 people have died from testing positive for coronavirus in scotland. So what measures could scotland be placed under . Werejoined now by linda bauld, professor of Public Health at the university of edinburgh. Good morning, do you think it is right it does not appear like a full lockdown will be likely in scotland . I think that would have been unpalatable, i do not think people would have accepted that, because the longer restrictions go on, generally the more fed up people get. It was useful yesterday, we heard the first minister rule out what is not on the table and that included no strict lockdown. Schools will remain open, no National Travel ban. We wait to hear what the new restrictions are today. There has been discussion about the Circuit Breaker idea. About potentially around to break in the school term using it to have stricter restrictions for a short period. Thats right, i think the new measures that will be introduced will be temporary. A challenge around the School Holidays as in england and wales, not all schools break up at the same time so you look at when exactly you would do it, but what is likely is we will be looking at areas where households mix. We already cannot meet to each others homes. You have to think where else is poorly ventilated and difficult to distance. So that might be hospitality, especially in the central belt. What is your assessment behind the reasons for the rise in infection . Is it improve testing . We look closely at the test Positivity Rate which has been up at 1296 in Positivity Rate which has been up at 12 in the past days. The World Health Organisation said 5 is problematic, so it compares the number of tests and number of people. It is not about more testing, it is a genuine rise. It is driven by a number of things, releasing lockdown, and universities going back, and they went back earlier than English Universities and we have seen spikes in that sector. What about track and trace, test and trace, whatever you want to call it. Is it working . We speak to government ministers every day on this programme and they always have to defend a system with serious problems. It is important to remember it is not a single system. Most of our testing we share with the rest of the uk which is a uk system. Test and protect up here is separate from the english, it was not contracted out to big companies. It is run by the nhs, they were given extra resources. It is working generally well, but given the numbers we have seen, particularly the past two weeks, i think it is challenging for them. That is another reason why we need to u nfortu nately ta ke another reason why we need to unfortunately take additional measures to allow that system to work to optimal capacity so when we release the measures they can get on top of spikes that occur. Another factor is the rise in hospital admissions. How concerning an element is that . It is worrying, but as everybody in Public Health says, we have learned so much from the spring. Aa were admitted yesterday ina single spring. Aa were admitted yesterday in a single day, and two weeks ago we only had a0 people in hospital overall, so that is not great. And cases going up in older age groups. The treatments we have from the recovery trial are better and we get to give them earlier in the disease. It is worrying, but i think we will be able to manage it much better. If we Keep Community transmission down and do the best with those admitted we will be in a better place than earlier in the year. Thank you. Professor linda bauld. Nicola sturgeon has said that hospitality is one of the areas where the Scottish Government is considering new restrictions. Were joined now by Paul Waterson from the scottish licensed trade association. I expect youd like many in scotland will be watching what happens later with enormous interest. Tell us, how have things affected you in the past few months . A survey we did that went up to august, about 10 of pubs and bars in scotland took part, showed 90 of pubs and bars were down on last year, which we would have expected. 38 showed they were down more than 50 , which is the profit margins. If we take into consideration we have seen stricter regulations coming in since that, and now we are talking about perhaps the first minister announcing even stricter regulations today, it is a worrying situation. We reckon at that point we could lose about a third of pubs in scotland. We would lose around 25 of staff which equates to 12,500 people. With new restrictions coming in and perhaps even more today, we reckon we might lose two thirds of premises in scotla nd lose two thirds of premises in scotland and double that amount of staff. It is a very worrying situation. How has the 10pm curfew affected your industry . The 10pm cu rfew affected your industry . The 10pm curfew here is slightly different than other parts of the uk, because we have staggered closing times here from 11 oclock to 2am, depending where you are. So it affects us quite badly and it is effectively lockdown for many late opening premises. It is really 9 30pm shutting, because last orders are 9 30pm for closing at 10pm. It has affected us badly. And there is an increase in people standing outside as everybody leaves at the same time. There is no doubt it has increased house parties, people socialising at home, where there are no restrictions. We know from the government most transmission is taking place in the home. So, actually, in pubs and bars, recent studies show under 5 of transmission is taking place in pubs and bars. We have done really well in keeping transmission levels down, and following restrictions and the advice. We have done really well in that. To have more restrictions would really be a disaster for not only pubs and bars, but the whole hospitality industry. We do not have the details yet. One of the things we understand is new measures are likely to coincide with the half term holiday. What would work better . Would it be a short, sharp closure . Better . Would it be a short, sharp closure . Is there anything that would work for you . What we really need is government intervention, we need is government intervention, we need to extend the furlough scheme, sector specific help for the industry, and perhaps if there was a close down or other restriction, we might be able to get through that. With the furlough system ending and the newjob scheme coming in, based around viable jobs, we wont have any viable jobs. That will not help. We have to look at sector specific help here. For many places, especially hotels, they rely on half term to have the last push of money through the businesses before we go into the quieter times, november. And christmas, this year, will be difficult. The last thing we need just now is more restrictions coming m, just now is more restrictions coming in, when we know the transmission levels on our premises are very low. Good to speak to you. Thank you. That is the picture in scotland. In england, households could be banned from mixing in nottingham after a surge in cases thats according to the citys health official. Nottingham now has the fifth highest infection rate in england with aao cases per 100,000 people. Meanwhile, in the north west, where local restricitons are already in place, burnleys infection rate has reached a16 cases per 100,000 people. Manchester remains the worst hit coronavirus hotspot in england, with the highest infections in england 562 cases per 100,000 of the population. Were now joined by councillor david mellen, Council Leader for nottingham city council, and the director of Public Health for lancashire, dr sakthi karunanithi. Good morning to both. Give us an idea of what is happening in parts of lancashire where there have been tight restrictions but numbers are still going up. What is happening in lancashire is infections are rising rapidly and it is starting to show up rapidly and it is starting to show up in the number of people in hospitals, unfortunately. At a time when there are winter pressures and staffing capacity is getting stretched. It is a worrying trend, in spite of some of our areas being in lockdown for a long time and people are starting to feel anxious and need that support. Is there any easy way of saying where infections are happening . It is widespread in the community. Not a single place has lower levels of infection as far asi has lower levels of infection as far as i can see in has lower levels of infection as far as i can see in some has lower levels of infection as far as i can see in some parts of the county. It seems mainly driven by households mixing. So people from different households coming into close contact, mostly in indoor settings than outdoor settings. David, lets get a picture of what is happening in nottingham, which is a Big University town. What is behind the rise, is it students, or outside that student population . The cases are rising across the community but clearly adding almost 50,000 people to the population, and the way students live in terms of big groupings, it makes it more difficult and lots of our new cases are people aged 22 or less. Do you know if new restrictions will be imposed in the city . We expect that, given the numbers of infections in nottingham. We are advising people not to mix with people from other households inside, but we will know in the next couple of days what the government expects us to do in nottingham. Of course we will work with the government to do everything to keep people in nottingham say. You would welcome more restrictions . I think it is clear the restrictions we have so far are not doing what they have been doing for six months in terms of keeping numbers relatively low. In the past weeks we have seen a huge increase and we are now the fifth highest in the country and therefore i believe new restrictions are needed. Doctor, you mention support, what would help . There are two main areas and the first is Mental Health, and people are feeling isolated. And feeling listen to about what the barriers are in following the advice. The second main area is businesses. We think we need more support in the form of discretionary grants for businesses. But without support, this suppressing the virus will not be effective and will probably do more harm than good. Be effective and will probably do more harm than goodlj be effective and will probably do more harm than good. I want to talk. You mentioned local lockdowns. What is your assessment . Are they making any difference . They seem to have made a difference early on when the rates were relatively lower, in some parts of the county like preston. We were in restrictions when the rates were 50 per 100,000. Lots of changed in the background. A lot more people mixing, people going to work, universities opened. I think when we act, we need to be swift, but it needs to be sufficient. For some reason, we do not seem to be taking enough action and just working around the edges will only drag things. But we need the support more than the suppression. David, some leaders in the north of england have talked about having regional control of test and trace. There have been publicised issues with that system. With that be something you would be in favour of a nottingham . Certainly, we are trying to enhance and add to the track and trace syste m and add to the track and trace system with our own people where perhaps a trace has not been possible. I think the government needs to work more closely with local authorities. They talk about devolution but this has been ce ntrally devolution but this has been centrally driven and we are open and willing to work, as we are at local level with universities and police, we are open to working with government to do what is best for people in nottingham. You mentioned universities coming back. I think there are 5000 cases over 80 universities. Should it have been handled in a different way, students going back . You have to question where most learning is online why the government were so insistent University Students would come back. They are back now. Students play an important part in the city and they are welcome here. But it seems it would have been easy to anticipate there would be a spike in positive cases as a result of so many young people moving around the country and living in big houses, halls, together, i think that could have been anticipated. Doctor, we will speak to somebody from the government in a moment, the International Trade secretary. Yesterday we spoke to the chancellor talking about some of the disagreements around the cabinet table about a Circuit Breaker, two weeks to try to reduce infections, potentially another National Lockdown. How do you feel, given what you told us about issues around restrictions at the moment . what you told us about issues around restrictions at the moment . I speak to many people, many colleagues in Public Health. Many of us feel that it is only going to get worse before it is only going to get worse before it can get better. What we feel is needed is a significant level of disruption to the transmission of the virus but it can only come with investment in communities and more Partnership Working in national and local government. That is what we need. We need swift, decisive, effective action. However unpalatable, we need to say to the public that is what is happening, and we need to carry the community with us. Community consent, and even greater political will is what we need. That is the balance. Do you think there can be Community Consent to what i think you are describing is another National Lockdown . Whether national or regional, we can debate that, but what i mean by Community Consent is support. A lot of people feel anxious. Jobs and Mental Health are becoming critical at this point in the pandemic. U nless we at this point in the pandemic. Unless we address that, provide support to people to carry them with us, iam support to people to carry them with us, i am afraid the Community Consent is not going to be there, that we need at the moment. Thank you. Really interesting to get the assessment from both lancashire and from nottingham, where potentially there will be another local lockdown. I will be speaking to liz truss from the government in a few minutes. Time for the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london, im tolu adeoye. Thames water has apologised after a major pipe burst in Hackney Marshes affecting at least nine postcode areas in east london. People have complained of low pressure or of being without water entirely. The company said its specialists were working to get things up and running as quickly as possible. The mayor of london is calling on the housing minister to do more to help londons homeless this winter. Sadiq khan has warned hundreds face freezing nights on the streets or risk catching coronavirus in communal shelters. He says urgent clarity and guidance is needed. The government has yet to respond. New Analysis Shows over a third of adults in psychiatric wards in london were infected with covid 19 at the height of the pandemic researchers at ucl say the true infection rate may have been even higher, given the low rates of testing early on in the outbreak. Theres a good service on the tubes. On the trains theres a major problem on the west coast main line with most services out of euston suspended due to signalling problems. On the roads the m25 is slow clockwise from j5 to clackett Lane Services due to roadworks. In the city, ludgate hill is closed due to gas leak from Cannon Street to ludgate circus. Finally, in Central London, Regent Street is shut northbound towards Oxford Circus due to a gas leak. Im back with the latest from bbc london in an hour. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. A former royal butler, says hes chuffed to bits to finally have a job after he was made redundant in march. Following months of rejection, Trevor Walford decided to hand out his cv at Railway Stations across west yorkshire. Trevor has spent his whole career in hospitality working at hotels including the ritz, and will now be putting those skills to good use. Hejoins now with his new boss rob campbell. Good morning to you both. Trevor, congratulations on the new gig. Give us an idea of how frustrating it was to be handing out all of these cvs and not get any response. 0h, very frustrating, good morning yeah, it was a big challenge. I was sitting every day sending cvs and getting rejection after rejection. Then i took the action i did, i went to the on school days and stood on a Railway Station passing out cvs. A good reaction. You laugh, but it worked you went all dressed up, all smart. Absolutely, it worked. It was a rainy day in yorkshire, i was sat in my kitchen sending cvs, and these e mails kept coming back saying, rejection, rejection. So i decided to go down to leeds Railway Station, and you know what, it absolutely worked. It started flood in. My linkedin account, by the time i left leeds Railway Station, i had 10,000 hits. I now have 2 million hits on it. It was absolutely phenomenal, phenomenal. I never, everthought of this response. We are seeing pictures of you handing out those cvs in the station with a mask on and a lovely pocket square, looking incredibly smart. Rather, how did you come across trevor, and what made you think, this fellow deserves a chance . Good morning. We came across trevor when he was handing out his cv at the station, didnt know what was be on his cd, took his cv, looked at it and, well, what can i say . Trevor was absolutely brilliant in the way that he actually went about looking for a job. Im going to go out there and get a job. So we then got together, and we offered him the job. I saw in it trevor is something i havent seenin it trevor is something i havent seen ina it trevor is something i havent seen in a lot of people today, and thatis seen in a lot of people today, and that is determination of actually wanting to work, and what trevor has done means he actually wants to work. It touches your heart, are you a similarage . Work. It touches your heart, are you a similar age . Yes, yes, we are a similarage, a similar age . Yes, yes, we are a similar age, yes. Nothing wrong with that, let me tell you. Trevor, what are you doing, whats the job . Well, im training throughout all of the restau ra nts. Im training throughout all of the restaurants. Other front of house staff. And bringing the service up toa staff. And bringing the service up to a sharper level. Its something i used to do in my lastjob. Im very much on the service side of things, and, yeah, i love it. I love what i do, i love teaching the young generation. And i think at the moment with the government going with the employment of the younger people, i think they have forgotten the older people in this world who is going to teach these young people . People like myself. So were bringing the service back to basics, and the way it should be. And im looking forward to my challenge, actually. Do you think, trevor, talking about younger people with regard tojobs, im sure talking about younger people with regard to jobs, im sure you wont mind me saying, you are 63. Do you think many people without making you face to face, they looked at your cv and saw your age and thought, not for me . Without meeting you face to face . For me . Without meeting you facetoface . No, that the biggest problem. Cvs are generated by computer nowadays, they go to companies, they see the age and experience but they dont see the person themselves. Im not ready for the coffin ive got a lot of energy in may. I love teaching young people. I love seeing people their career, i have a great passion for this. I love what i do. I have been in the Service Industry since i was 15, i have worked all over the world. And i really am passionate about service. Its what i love and i want to pass that knowledge on otherwise it will get forgotten. Rob, cani otherwise it will get forgotten. Rob, can i ask you . We are talking to you both and seeing pictures of trevor mentoring young people. How do they respond to him . They respond to trevor rowe very well. They listen to what hes got to say, and because of his professionalism and the way that trevor portrays himself and comes over, people are going to listen because he comes over very well. Can you give us. This could potentially be awkward, rob and trevor, but can you give us an assessment of trevor so far in the job, rob, is he ok . Assessment of trevor so far in the job, rob, is he 0k . He is absolutely brilliant, and if he continues on the way which he has continued on his first day, excellent. Im looking forward to it, great challenge trevor and im really proud to have him on our team and is a memberof ourteam. Proud to have him on our team and is a member of our team. How lovely to have your appraisal live on television fantastic, absolutely 100 spot on what is your advice . These are tough times, there are so many people, nina talks to us all the time about however many hundreds of people applying for one job. What is your advice to people out there who are having to look forjobs right now . What would you say to them . Look, you have to keep going with it. When i was, back in march, when i got an e mailfrom my last firm saying they could no longer keep me on, i was pretty shocked. I had to pick myself up from that. And you have to pick yourself up, you have to get out there. Theres thousands of people losing their jobs, i have to say i am one of the lucky ones at the moment. But what i did was to get out, handed the cvs out to people, go to the companies. Dont sit in your house sending cvs out by computer, get yourself out there, be positive, keep yourself positive and keep yourself going. You are absolutely brilliant, thank you so much for that advice. Congratulations, trevor normally, if you watch us through the week, we would normally have a government minister on. Liz truss will be here but she will just minister on. Liz truss will be here but she willjust be a few minutes late. We will be with her in the next few minutes. But first, lets talk about the cold and the lateness of some tennis. This man worked right past his bedtime its been a french open like no other, but there is at least some consistancy, rafael nadal marching towards the final in paris. Hes through to the semi finals after a straight sets win against the italianjannik sinner. The match started late, and then finished very late, it was almost 1. 30 in the morning when nadal was finally victorious. Thats the latest ever finish at Roland Garros, and nadal was annoyed with the time of the match and the cold. He can equal Roger Federers record of 20 grand slams if he wins in paris. There was a big upset in the womens draw. The highest ranked player left in the competition, elina svitolina, was knocked out by qualifier nadia podoroska. The argentine is ranked 131 in the world and is the first female qualifier in the open era to reach the semifinals at Roland Garros. The england manager Gareth Southgates read his squad the riot act, after two incidents of players breaking coronavirus rules. Tammy abraham, ben chilwell and jadon sancho look set to miss tomorrow nights friendly with wales after they went to a party where there were more than six people. Phil foden and Mason Greenwood are also out of the squad after being sent home from iceland last month. Southgates reminded his players of what it means to play for england. A rider at cyclings giro ditalia has been left with a suspected broken back, after a helicopter caused a crash. It happened near the end of stage four. One team boss said the helicopter was flying too low, and that the movement of the air from the blades caused a barrier to blow into the road. The italian rider Luca Wackermann was taken to hopsital with multiple injuries. We wish him a very speedy recovery. That is a horrible story, awful. Thank you so much. All eyes across the us may be focused on the clash between donald trump and joe biden at the moment, but its not the only high stakes contest taking place between heavyweights in the states right now. That is written with a heavy amount of irony for the last week, thousands of people have been voting for the coveted title of fattest bear at the Katmai National park in southern alaska. And the competition has been fierce. The last two in the running were 32 chunk and bear 7a7. Some of them have nicknames, but they will have numbers. 7a7 is a past winner, i think. Lets find out who has been crowned fattest bear now from sara wolman, who is a park ranger and project manager at Katmai National park in alaska, where these bears are based. First of all, congratulations for even doing this because i think its just going to bring peoplejoy even doing this because i think its just going to bring people joy over their breakfast this morning why have a competition for the fattest bear . Well, you know, its more the fun thing. Really the big thing is it really educates people about the ecosystem in Katmai National park and the fact it is very pristine and it allows the best to get as fat as they do. Its the million of salmon who are in that area and its one of the last places on earth where that is still possible. Give us an idea of why that happens . They are essentially getting themselves ready for winter so they gorge on the salmon at a certain part in the park . Exactly, these bears are in a state called hyperplasia at the moment, which is a period of excessive eating. This prepares them for the next couple of months of hibernation. So tell us about this, the heavier they are, the betterfor hibernation . Definitely. So a fat bear is a successful bear. And that means they are going to survive this next couple of months curled up in their dens are so they want to get as fat as possible because they will go for months without eating. We are looking at some lovely pictures of them in the river. Tell us about these individuals, chunks, what is he like . Sure, chunk is not the most dominant bear but he will be in a couple of years. He is tenacious, he likes to hang out at the bottom of the bowl, that is a good fishing spot. When you have 7a7, i would say he is the biggest bear maybe even in the world. He is quite large. Its amazing, he was crowned fat bear champion for this year. Thats the first time he has been fat bear champion. In the previous years, he has been the biggest bear. But people have favourites so looking at the fattest bear stats here, so 7a7, it says he weighs 1a00 pounds, i think that is 100 stone or 636 kilograms, thats enormous yeah, really big. I always like to joke with people, and say, yeah, there is a scale in the woods that we put them on not the case. We have Even Technology that we used to scan the bears and get an estimate of the volume. Thats how we got that number, which is really off the charts. And when you are that big, do other bears see him as the dominant male, so if he picks a spot on the river, no one else goes anywhere near him . Yes, for the most part. Although its surprising, a few female bears will stand up to him which i was thing is amazing. He is not the most dominant bear, but i wouldnt be surprised if he gets that title in the next year or so. However bears doing, they doing well in your part . 0h, however bears doing, they doing well in your part . Oh, yeah, really well. Again its a testament to how pristine that ecosystem really is with the healthy and clean water of bristol bay which feeds into Katmai National park which allows for this massive salmon run to go through. Its a really good sign, its a positive thing for people to focus on. Are people able to come and visit the bears, is a very safe distance . Yes, definitely. These bears are specifically in a place called brooks camp in Katmai National park, visitors come every summer. It is only accessible by boat or plane. It is pretty remote, but people still managed to get out there every year by the hundreds to check these guys out. Look at that, thatis check these guys out. Look at that, that is 7a7, look at the size of him cani that is 7a7, look at the size of him can i ask you, you have the fattest bear at this time of year, do you do slimmer of the year when you see them at the other side of winter because what we really should, that a good point said a significant weight loss over that period mcrae there is significant weight loss over that period of time . Yes, when you are out there, you look at these bears every day and its impossible to tell who they are from june ten this time of year because they change so massively. This might be a dumb question, how do you announce the winner, do you stand somewhere near 7a7 and an ounce, congratulations, you are the fattest bear . And an ounce . I wish, that would be so fun it is actually on explore dot org, one of our partner organisations, you will see an announcement on there, and on the Katmai National park facebook page. All three of us. So lovely to speak too, you, i feel sorry for chunk. Was it chunk in the goonies and slot hey, guys ifat bear is a successful bear, remember that. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning, everybody. It is a beautiful picture sent in by one of our weather watchers in staffordshire. Today, many of us have started off with a bright sun rise, and it is a dry and bright start. But some showers in the forecast and heavy rain coming later on, you can see that on the satellite picture, you can follow it into the atlantic. Two elephants coming our way later today and tonight and through tomorrow. Two weather fronts. We have showers and gusty winds across the north west of scotla nd gusty winds across the north west of scotland today, showers will fade out, but cloud building in in the south west heralding the arrival of rain. Dry weather and sunshine in the north, still the showers persisting in the final. Temperatures today, 11 in the far north to 16 in the far south east of england. If we pick up this area of low pressure with the two fronts bringing all this rain and strengthening winds across southern and Western Areas, there it goes, moving west to east. We will see some heavy dollops of rain across wales, the north midlands and Northern England. Murky conditions on the other side of it but mild. To the north, clearer skies, touchy mist and fog forming and it will feel cooler. Tomorrow, we quickly lose the first band of rain but we have the second one sinking southwards. Behind that as it clears, it will leave some residual cloud. Particularly so across lincolnshire and east anglia. It will brighten up with some sunny skies coming our way with showers across the north and west. The wind is easing a touch. Top temperatures tomorrow, 17 degrees. Another system coming in on friday pushing south eastwards, so another wet afternoon across england and wales. So still showers across Northern Ireland and northern and western scotland. In between, something brighter. Temperature wise, nine in the north to 15 the south. Into the weekend, a ridge of High Pressure building across us. The wind subtly changes to the northerly tomorrow, a cool direction for us. Although the weather will settle down, because of the wind, we will see some showers across northern scotland and eastern areas. Temporary temperatures, 11 to 12, it is coming down and High Pressure will be left with us into the early part of next week. A break from all of this rain after later today, tonight and tomorrow. You know me, i always look for the upside. The upside at the moment is the autumn colours, beautiful. Yes, absolutely beautiful. All the red, orange, yellow, just gorgeous. My question, carol, slightly less important, iam question, carol, slightly less important, i am so perturbed that louise didnt know about the goonies. Carol, do you know about the travel shuffle . Sloths . The fratelli is . Is not a band . Isnt that a band . Fratelli is . Is not a band . Isnt that a band . They are the villain in the goonies. When you were watching that film i was probably doing a dissertation. I would show you a travel shuffle but im not sure its appropriate at this time of the morning. I only mean that in an age sense 0h, oh, dear. What . Our main story this morning. New restrictions aimed at slowing a surge in coronavirus cases are to be announced by scotlands first minister, later this afternoon. Meanwhile in england, the number of people admitted to hospital with the virus on one day has jumped by nearly a quarter, the largest daily figure since earlyjune. We can discuss this now with International Trade secretary, liz truss, who joins us now. Lets talk about hospital admissions, where would you say we are, if this the second spy . We are working very carefully right across is working very carefully right across is this the second spike . We are working across the country to make sure we keep measures in check to stop the spread of the virus and we are keeping it under review. Whats really important is we dont want to go back to a second lockdown where we end up having to close down the economy and the potential damage that has on peoples livelihood to say what we are doing is keeping the balance there between protecting lives and livelihoods. And we keep it under review. There are lots of different statistics, whether it is hospital admissions, different statistics, whether it is hospitaladmissions, prevalence different statistics, whether it is hospital admissions, prevalence of the virus, so we need to follow the advice of our chief scientific and medical offices to keep the balance right. You mention to the second lockdown, is that under consideration . We have already said we keep everything under review but we keep everything under review but we absolutely want to avoid another National Lockdown. It has a devastating effect on the economy. The right approach is to have local restrictions in place to restrict the spread of the virus whilst keeping local economy is going. Can you respond to professorjohn edmund who works with sage, he has said we need to take much more stringent measures, not just in need to take much more stringent measures, notjust in the north of england, we need to do it countrywide and bring the epidemic back under control. Frankly the better strategy is to put them in place now. Your response . We have some people on one side of the debate saying we need more lockdown measures, others are saying we should lift the measures. We are trying to steer a path of keeping the balance between protecting livelihoods and protecting lives. I think that is the right approach, i think that is the right approach, i think its an approach that the British Public understand and will help us get through what will be a very difficult winter. From what we understand, the cabinet is also divided in a similar way stop where are you, are you grow more stringent measures or not . The cabinet is com plete measures or not . The cabinet is complete united behind the Prime Minister and we have a Covid Committee which considers these measures, i do not sit on that committee but i am fully in support of the measures we are taking across the country. We dont want to take these measures, it is obviously very difficult, there has to be constant review to make sure we keep them up to date but it is very important that we keep that balance between protecting lives, but also making sure that the economy is protected, and that over time, we help people retrain for the new economy as the Prime Minister announced in his speech yesterday. Lets talk about one of the measures which is these local lockdowns in place across vast different areas including the north east, north west. Lets look at what is happening, for example, lets look at bolton as one example. And they are similar. At the start of local lockdown injuly, the number was 17 infections per 100,000, it has been going up steadily, it is now 251 per 100,000. Would you say that these local measures are working . We are getting very good advice from our scientists and medical officers. They look at all aspects of the epidemic so that the local rate, the rate of hospitalisation, and advise us on the measures to take. I think it is difficult to compare the situation where those measures were not taken and the one where they are being taken, but certainly the advice is. Im sorry, where they are being taken, bolton, manchesteras well, the rate of infection is now up well, the rate of infection is now up to 569. This is where measures are being taken, are you saying they are being taken, are you saying they are working . What im saying is that we got the best possible medical advice on what measures to take, we have taken those measures, we co nsta ntly have taken those measures, we constantly review how those measures are working. And of course the virus ta kes are working. And of course the virus takes different courses. You will recall when chris whitty and patrick valla nce recall when chris whitty and Patrick Vallance were talking a couple of weeks ago, they were talking about the second wave manifesting itself in different ways, appearing more likely than it had in the uk than it had before. That is why we use local restrictions this time. It is right to trust the medical experts. We can all watch the tv and look at the figures and come to our own conclusions but they are the people who ultimately understand the way the disease spreads. Whilst in those local lockdown areas, keeping schools open, keeping people getting into work keeping the economy going, thatis into work keeping the economy going, that is the right balance. At the end of the day the politicians who decide on the restrictions, do you think they have gone far enough in those areas . Absolutely, i think the restrictions in those areas are right but we need to keep looking at them and reviewing this. This is a moving situation, as you have mentioned, we have seen a rise in cases in some of those areas. So of course our advisors will be looking at that and telling us the appropriate steps to take next. Its not a perfect science, we are learning more about this disease all the time. Im not pretending that the time. Im not pretending that the government is all knowing and all seeing. We are using the best advice to make sure we keep that balance between protecting peoples lives and protecting their livelihoods, but also getting people ready for the future economy we are going to see post coronavirus. Ready for the future economy we are going to see post coronavirusm scotla nd going to see post coronavirusm scotland we know Nicola Sturgeon is discussing this morning about further restrictions. If you got given advice, to keep referring to advice from the scientist, would you change things, do what they are doing, close bars, for example . Everywhere if we were given new advice, im sure the Covid Committee would take that on board when they look at developing policy, that is what they have done consistently through the covid crisis and thats no doubt what Nicola Sturgeon is doing in scotland. I think the important point is keeping schools open, keeping the economy going to make sure we protect peoples jobs and livelihoods. Can we talk about whats going on in universities . 5000 cases at 80 universes, martin moss, University Officer for the couege moss, University Officer for the college union, he said ten days ago courses should have been moved online. Do you think this has been handled in the right way . Universities have tried to strike the balance between online provision and face to face provision, and it is really down to each university being able to manage that locally. I think they are doing that and some courses have been moved online where it is necessary. Again, i think a blanket approach would be the wrong approach. There are different circumstances in different parts of the country and that is for universities to look at. It is of course important that students are protected. But its important that they get a good education at the same time. Thank you for your time, liz truss, this morning. Stay with us, headlines coming up. Good morning. Welcome to breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Our headlines today scotland faces tighter restrictions to control the growing number of covid cases. Daily covid hospital admissions in england are at a four month high, rising by two thirds in the past week. Tributes are paid to rock legend Eddie Van Halen, whos died at the age of 65. We are alive at st austell Railway Station in connell to see the departure of a very special train, named after d day veteran and champion fundraiser harry billing. Morning, harry. An end to threatening debt letters. Overdue notices with warnings in bold or block capitals will be toned down. But should more be done to support those struggling to pay back debt . We put your questions to martin lewis. A warning from the england manager. Gareth southgate read his squad the riot act after two high profile breaches of coronavirus rules. Good morning. A drier day ahead for most of us today with some sunshine. But there are some showers in the north and west and gusty winds and later we will see stronger winds and some rain moving across the southwest. I will have all the details in ten minutes. Its wednesday the 7th of october. Our top story. Scotlands first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is to announce new measures to try to control growing numbers of coronavirus cases. Its understood there could be further restrictions on hospitality and local travel. Our scotland correspondent, lorna gordon, is in glasgow for us this morning. Lorna, how are people there feeling about todays announcement . Do you know what might happen . Good morning. The scottish cabinet is meeting shortly to make its final decisions. We know what it wont be. There wont be a scotland wide there wont be a scotland wide travel ban. People are not going to be restricted to their homes like they were in march. This isnt going to bea they were in march. This isnt going to be a full lockdown and the schools will not shut. But the half term holidays is that this weekend and it looks like the Scottish Government is going to use that to clamp down. We understand that these restrictions are likely to be tough. They are already banned from mixing socially in each others homes in scotla nd socially in each others homes in scotland and the main point of transmission is when people meet each other, so it is likely to focus on hospitality, and in particular the night time economy, pubs and bars. But industry bodies are worried about this. Some businesses have already gone to the wall. They are worried that others will follow and they say the government needs to give more support if tighter measures are being brought in. We need a government intervention. We need a government intervention. We need to extend the furlough scheme and sector specific help for our industry. Then perhaps if there was some kind of shut or other restrictions brought in, we might be able to get through that. But with the furlough system ending in the newjob skin coming in, which is based around viable jobs, we will not have any viable jobs. Cases are on the rise across scotland, but the situation is particularly acute in the central belt, so while they say there will be no scotland wide travel ban, it is worth watching to see whether there are travel restrictions brought in in areas like west Central Scotland or the lothians. It is also interesting that the Scottish Government says it will publish its evidence to justify the decisions it makes. That is an a cce pta nce the decisions it makes. That is an acceptance of the fact that people are acceptance of the fact that people a re weary acceptance of the fact that people are weary now of all these restrictions, and businesses are worried about the impact it will have on them. Thank you. The Pharmaceutical Company, roche, has warned of problems with the supply of coronavirus swabs and nhs tests for other conditions, including cancer. It said problems with a move to a new warehouse had led to a very significant drop in its processing capacity, and although covid 19 tests would be prioritised, it could take two weeks to fix the issue. A high profile businessman from leeds has agreed to hand over property and cash worth almost £10 million to the National Crime agency. Investigators say the man has long been an associate of gangsters involved in murder, fraud and drugs. Our home affairs correspondent, dominic casciani, reports. Mansoor manni hussain, a high living wealthy Property Developer from leeds. For years, hes shown off a lavish lifestyle, attending vip events to pose alongside stars like beyonce and simon cowell. But his outward respectability masked the truth. His friends included this man, bradford gangster Mohammed Nisar khan, known on the streets as king meggy, jailed for life for murder. Over 20 years, Mansoor Manni Hussain bought properties in london, cheshire, and north yorkshire. The National Crime agency believes they were paid for with profits from the violent gangs he acted for. Today, he has handed a5 properties to the nca, including this modern apartment block in leeds. And this seven bedroom home, which he once lent to an armed robber rent free. And thats because hes received an unexplained wealth order from the courts to reveal the origins of his mysterious riches. This is a really important case for the nca. Its the first time we have recovered assets in relation to an unexplained wealth order. He was laundering on behalf of high level criminals in the Leeds Bradford area, so ensuring that their assets and his assets were clean assets and couldnt be taken away. When investigators looked into manni hussains life, they didnt find enough evidence to charge him with money laundering, but the unexplained wealth order forced him to hand over his books. And when he couldnt show how hed made his money, the game was up. Manni hussain hasnt said why he has handed over the keys to property, including a luxury flat in this block opposite harrods. He remains unconvicted of crimes, but hes also the first suspected money launderer in british history to hand over his wealth without a fight. Dominic casciani, bbc news. A newborn is not usually something that comes as a surprise, but staff at chester zoo were left baffled at the arrival of a bornean orangutan. Keepers had done multiple tests on the mother, leia, but failed to spot the pregnancy. The baby was born injune, but leia had kept it mostly hidden since its birth. This is her second baby conceived as part of a Breeding Programme at the zoo. We still dont know what the baby is called. Maybe they should do a survey. They have a star wars theme, so maybe darth. I dont think that isa so maybe darth. I dont think that is a good name for a baby orangutan heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. This is a lovely weather watchers picture taken in lothian this morning. You can see the blue skies and for many of us, it will be jaya than yesterday. Lovely, bright sta rts than yesterday. Lovely, bright starts and sunshine, but we do have some showers. Later, we will see some showers. Later, we will see some rain and later still, heavy rain. We have a shower is peppering the north and west of scotland currently. Showers across Northern England and Northern Ireland should fade, and we see a lot of dry weather in the charts, but the cloud is building towards the west, heralding the arrival of this rain and the wind was that to strengthen as well. If you are heading out later this afternoon, this is what you can expect. A lot of dry weather and sunshine to kent, east anglia and sunshine to kent, east anglia and the midlands. But we have the cloud building across South West England and wales. A lot of sunshine across Northern Ireland, Northern England and much of scotland. But still the showers peppering the north and west and still quite gusty winds. This evening, the rain gathers speed. The wind strengthens with strong gusts as it moves across england and wales, Northern Ireland and southern scotland. Some particularly heavy bursts across Northern England, wales and parts of the midlands. Under this, there will bea the midlands. Under this, there will be a lot of murky conditions. To the north, clear skies and patchy mist and fog, but feeling much cooler. More detail in half an hour. D day veteran Harry Billinge has got used to being surprised by us on breakfast, and today were helping to facilitate another honour for him. We canjoin harry now with breakfastsjohn maguire at st austell train station as they wait for a very special arrival. John. Good morning. A very special arrival for a special gentleman this morning. A train named in harrys on i will be living here at st austell this morning and going down to penzance. There is a band playing inside, so all sorts of festivities this morning. Harry is going to have a quick puff on his path before we chat to you. How are you this morning . I have been singing lets have a quick chat to margo while dad is catching his breath. Another special day, because he has had a few of the last few months. Absolutely, what a year or two, or three or 95 95 years. We had a good day for his birthday too. The weather was iffy, but nice. They are naming a trainerfor weather was iffy, but nice. They are naming a trainer for you today. What do you make of that, harry . They are naming a train after you. Do you make of that, harry . They are naming a train after youlj are naming a train after you. dont deserve that. Odette had one named after her. I am very proud to be numbered with such people. I was a sapper. I never wanted any promotion. I never wanted to give anybody any orders. Everyone was responsible for their own life. I was independent. Always have been. Good to hear it. You got your mba from her majesty the queen. She is a marvellous woman, a lovely woman. She said, i see you have got the kings badge and i said, that was given to me by the king himself, king george vi. He was a wonderful man and king george vi. He was a wonderful man and i will always remember his speech before he died at christmas, when he said, and i quote i said, give me a light that i may go forth and seek it, and he said go and put your hand in the hand of god. It is better than light. Amazing how you remember these things. On the side of the chain today, it will say, Harry Billinge, mbe, legion donna, which i know is special to you. They saidi which i know is special to you. They said i wish my life, but so did everyone else. What a load of nonsense. Everyone risked their life and some poor devils lost them. Many, many men. 22,442 men died from the 6th of june many, many men. 22,442 men died from the 6th ofjune to the 22nd of august, half a million men died. And they are still killing one another now. Everybody is at war. There is now. Everybody is at war. There is no glory in war, i can assure you. Its a terrible waste of life. And the memorial is nearing completion, isnt it . And my friend, nick when shah, an ambassador to the queen, what a man, what a wonderful crowd they are, the trustees of that memorial. I am pleading with people now, who have been very kind over the years, i must have collected thousands of pounds but now, we are trying to raise money for guardians. If you wa nt raise money for guardians. If you want to be a guardian, all you have got to do is subscribe to the Normandy Memorial trust. You can look it all up. We are trying to keep this guardianship going. The preservation of this wonderful memorial, two the wonderful man who died in that terrible normandy campaign. Harry, thank you so much. Great to talk to you, margot. Great to see you. Have a fantastic day, i am sure you well. More importantly, harry has always got such a wonderful smile on his face. It is this time of year when ordinarily, people would be thinking about fundraising for veterans, especially the Royal British legion and the pppy the Royal British legion and the poppy appeal but restrictions have meant those sort of activities will be limited to a certain extent and the legion has come up with an idea that we can download poppies online and you can have that in a window, similarto and you can have that in a window, similar to the thing that people that did with rainbows thanking nhs workers giving lockdown and key staff workers. Thinking about that fundraising and how important it is, there is a determination for that fundraising to continue somehow. We will hear from harry once again about his plans. Its quite calming, because you dont realise youre doing it. Its mesmerising to watch Jeanette Connell create her crochet poppies. More than 30 years ago, she suffered a brain haemorrhage and now shes only 3 of her vision left. She took up crocheting these intricate poppies after the death of her mother and now makes thousands to sell for the Royal British legion. I love doing it because i know its a good cause. I didnt know what to do, so what i done is be positive and i thought, well, if i cant do this, i can do Something Else. And this is where i find that i can do something. I probably crochet not realising that im not looking, im just doing but i find it comforting and ill probably be doing this for a long time. But this year, its different. Due to covid, shes unable to take up her usual post crocheting and selling in a local supermarket, so theyre Available Online and her hairdresser is helping out. She calls in to check on sales. Jeanette has asthma, so doesnt wear a mask. How are you . Got lots of poppies. Just before lockdown, the d day veteran Harry Billinge was awarded the mbe by the queen in recognition of his fundraising for a memorial to his fallen colleagues. He understands there will be restrictions this autumn, but hes determined to carry on in his comrades memory. Im positive ill be able to collect more money in october and christmas time than i have done in the past. And it means so much to you, this memorial, doesnt it . Oh, yes, yes, it does. More than. Icant. Im overwhelmed. I cant even talk about it, because ill get tears in me eyes when i think. I cant forget. And im not able to forget. But i dont want to forget either, really. And its that remembrance that inspires fundraising by veterans and so many others. Vera barnaby has been collecting for more than 70 years and amassed a total of over £1 million. It means a lot to her. Well, this is one of the poppies that was in place at the tower of london. And, unfortunately, i was too late to purchase one. The following year, at conference of the womens section there was a raffle and, hey presto, i won. Shes known in County Durham as mrs poppy and has already started preparations, knowing there will be restrictions this year. We wont be allowed to go out to the street this year because we have to have no social contact with people. Every year, you know from your previous record whats expected and you try to beat it. And we have been doing that, but after raising 3a,000 odd last year, i dont think well get that, this year. But fingers crossed. You never know. So, what has been so successful for so many years will need to change for this remembrance season. But what wont change is the belief, the commitment, and the dedication to helping and honouring those whove served and those who made sacrifices. John maguire, bbc news. He always brilliant to listen to, Harry Billinge. Just stop and listen to what he has got to say. Hopefully we will go back to see the special train when it arrives. Now, harry is someone who knows all about fundraising but this years poppy appeal will be very different as many volunteers are shielding. So how will this years poppy appeal compare to previous ones . Were joined now by claire rowcliffe, director of fundraising at the Royal British legion. Nice to speak to you this morning, thank you for being with us. We know when poppies will be available but how will it be different to what we have known in the past . As you heard from vera and jeanette, it is challenging this year. We expect some of our volunteers collecting but only when it is safe to do so and depending on restrictions, etc. We have had to look at different ways to allow people to support us and support the poppy appeal. As you mentioned earlier, we have developed a downloadable free mac, so people can download one and colour one into display in your windows downloadable poppy. You can support us and support our veterans and serving community. You have had to. Speaking to Richard Curtis yesterday about a slightly different circumstance but with the pandemic and an attempt to reduce plastic waste, they have had to do things differently with red noses for comic relief next year. It has made everybody think about how to adjust to what we have been going through over the last few months. Absolutely. It is a balance. We are really conscious that a lot of our supporters wont be able to get out of their own home as well. Whilst we cant proactively have as many volu nteers cant proactively have as many volunteers and supporters on the streets to collect, as we traditionally would do, we have to find ways for our supporters to really engage with remembrance. The pppy really engage with remembrance. The poppy appeal is so important from a fund raising perspective. It is also our avenue where people get their pppy our avenue where people get their poppy and show active remembrance by wearing it. It has been a balance of trying to develop different ways. We have developed where we can go on our website and order a pack of poppies to be sent to your home, so you can distribute those in your own family unitand you can distribute those in your own family unit and bubble so that you can take part in remembrance as well as support the poppy appeal. suppose the problem is, claire, visibility. I imagine quite a bit of your money is given by people walking down the street, seeing somebody selling poppies and shaking a bucket. Absolutely. That is where our Corporate Partners have stepped in and they have shared our message and they share our new brand campaign, which was aired last night for the first time, i believe. So they can promote the poppy appeal and the royal that the Royal British legion do for our customers and supporters the work that. Getting the message out and yourselves supporting us today. It is important that the nation realised that we are still here, we are still supporting our veterans and our seven community. Now more than ever with the impact of covid our serving community. We are definitely here, we are not going anywhere. We really appreciate you spending time with us this morning, claire. All the best. He mentioned that downloadable pppy yu he mentioned that downloadable poppy. You mentioned. And you can download your own poppy now by visiting the Royal British legion website britishlegion. Org. Uk. We have talked about what is happening in scotland this morning. Additional lockdown restrictions will almost certainly be put in place in scotland in the next couple of days, first minister, Nicola Sturgeon has said. So what is the Current Situation there . Lets ta ke lets take you through some of those figures. Yesterday, 800 new cases of coronavirus were announced across the country. 262 people are currently being treated for coronavirus in scotlands hospitals, and 25 patients are being treated in intensive care. More than 2,500 people have died from testing positive for coronavirus in scotland. We can speak now to dr david chung, an emergency consultant at Crosshouse Hospital in kilmarnock. Thank you so much forjoining us. I am sure you are busy. What can you tell us about what is going on with coronavirus and admissions in your hospital . Where i work in ayrshire, it is an area that isnt as busy as some of the more built population centres. The Emergency Medical Community in scotland is relatively small and we all keep in touch. I know that admissions, and looking at national data, we can see that hospital admissions and patients in hospital admissions and patients in hospital with coronavirus is u nfortu nately hospital with coronavirus is unfortunately rising again. It appears to be doubling roughly every seven days. Looking at the governments own published data. How does that compare to the height of the pandemic back, five months ago . Well, where we are just now is not the height of the pandemic, u nfortu nately. We the height of the pandemic, unfortunately. We need to be mindful that either two or three weeks, we may be at the height of the pandemic because you have that leap in time whereby the young tend to get the disease, spread it, and infect people. Again, looking at the data, it is only now that the older people appear to be greater number of infections. I would say, though, that we were expecting, in march and april. We didnt know what we were going to get and we were absolutely preparing for the apocalypse, really. We were very worried about intensive care beds and rightly so. At the moment, the number of people in our intensive care is not as high as it was in a comparable time at the start of the year, at the start of the pandemic. Something slightly different. We changed the way we treat coronavirus. Not everybody gets the same treatment as they would have done before because we have learned how we can do it better. Interesting to hear. Can i just ask you a bit more detail about young people. You talk about the increase amongst young people in infections, is that being echoed in hospital admissions . At the moment, the number of admissions are relatively low. I would say, in speaking to colleagues around the country, there have been perhaps more people in the 30 50 age range. U nfortu nately, most more people in the 30 50 age range. Unfortunately, most people in those age ranges tend to have some form of underlying medical issue, as well. But, unfortunately, people are glassing obesity as such a thing. So, there are people who otherwise might be healthy they are classing obesity. They might be slightly higher risk. But there isnt a tsunami of young people very sick with covid coming in but there is no room for complacency here. We know the first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, will be discussing further measures in cabinet today. Would you welcome further measures, do you think you will see an impact . We dont know what they are but would you see an impact . We have all been ona you see an impact . We have all been on a very steep learning curve over the past six months, within medicine, within government and throughout society. We have to really evaluate and what we are much more mindful now are perhaps the unintended consequences, especially over the medium and long term. The genetics of the virus, it is possible to work out where people caught their virus with much more certainty than at the start of this process. Through effective Contact Tracing and a degree of analysis, we are better able, i believe, to pinpoint where people are getting infected from. Hopefully, that should make it easier to target the kind of areas where there are high risk infections and try and leave the areas where there is low risk of infection. Perhaps less restricted. Because we realise. All of us realise, people, doctors and medicine, realise we need a balanced approach to this. But we will still have to consider if there is evidence that particular behaviours are causing disproportionate levels of infection, they may well need to be curtailed. It is good to get details, dr david chung, thank you for your time this morning. Thank you. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning from bbc london, im tolu adeoye. Thames water has apologised after a major pipe burst in Hackney Marshes, affecting at least nine postcode areas in east london. People have complained of low pressure or being without water entirely. Campaigners will be at the Supreme Court later today hoping to have the decision to block plans for a third runway at heathrow upheld. The governments plan to expand the airport was ruled unlawful in february. It followed a successful legal challenge by friends of the earth. A mixed ability, rugby team has been started in reading, inspired by a young man with downs syndrome. The Berkshire Team have been backed by several sporting bodies keen to welcome more players who may have felt sidelined in the past. Rugby gives so much to so many people and this is one section of society, people with learning disabilities and other barriers, whove never been able to play rugby before, so to be able to welcome them into the Rugby Society and to see them be able to build their skills and to grow and develop as part of a team, i think, will be a fantastic journey. Lets take a look at the travel situation now. On the trains theres a major problem on the west coast mainline with most services out of euston suspended due to signalling problems. On the roads Vauxhall Bridge remains closed for roadworks these are the queues on nine elms lane on approach. In the city ludgate hill is closed due to gas leak from Cannon Street to ludgate circus. Finally, in Central London Regent Street is shut northbound towards Oxford Circus due to a gas leak. Now, though, its back to dan and louise. Bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Struggling with debt can be one of the most stressful experiences in life. Now the government has announced its changing the law to ban threatening letters which can add to that stress. Ninas got more on this one for us. Whats going to change, nina . Good morning. Thats right. Debt is one of them most stressful things you can experience. The government has announced that it will change the law to ban threatening letters. Were talking about Consumer Credit here where you borrow money on credit cards, store cards, overd rafts and loans. There are rules which regulate how lenders should behave but those rules are 40 years old and they include a section on what happens if you fall behind on payments. Letters are sent. Look often in block capitals. Often with confusing legal language. And campaigners say receiving letters like this can feel like were being shouted at, and may send people already feeling vulnerable and out of control in to panic. One Charity Claims people in problem debt are three times more likely to have considered suicide than people who arent, so language is crucial when it comes to encouraging people to act. This is steve. He found his finances spiralling out of control after he and his wife lost theirjobs, they had to move house with one baby, and another on the way. Without really knowing it, i was suffering with my Mental Health, with depression and anxiety. And the when the letters come in, it makes you feel a bit of a let down to your family, like you are not providing for them and you have got them into a situation and that makes you feel even lower. And the debt letters just kept pushing and pushing, to the point that there was a time when i felt i was a complete failure and i actually considered taking my own life. I am pleased to say steve get his finances in order and now he advises others who have fallen into debt. This morning the government announced it agrees with campaigners; that the wording of the letters must change to be less threatening. The bold lettering will be reduced. Legal terms will be translated into straightforward language. And people will be guided towards debt suppoort services. This is something that the money saving expert martin lewis has been campaigning for hejoins me now from north london. I know what loads of our audience will be shouting you get yourself into financial debt, you have got to pay the money. It doesnt matter how the letter was worded. There are a few things it is worth clearing up before we start. The first thing to say is that as you said in your intro, the government has banned threatening letters. We need to be clear. The reason for their being threatening letters is that the law has mandated firms to use capital letters. It has mandated them to use threatening language. It has mandated them to signpost to solicitors and trading standards, even though that is irrelevant, and it has done that for 40 years. This isa campaign it has done that for 40 years. This is a campaign by my charity, the money on Mental Health policy institute, which supported many other charities and many lenders. We wa nt to other charities and many lenders. We want to change this because im a look at the numbers. In england alone in one year, 100,000 people attempt to take their own lives because of debt. 400,000 people consider it. This is absolutely crucial. No one here is saying people shouldnt have letters about debt and that there shouldnt be open communication. What were saying is that with one in four suffering a Mental Health condition each with potentially half those in debt crisis having a Mental Health condition because there is a marriage made in hell between Mental Health issues and debt, changing the language into a way that is conversational, explanatory and signposted in the right direction, something we should have done years ago, and if youre saying people should pay their debts, well, ba rclays, should pay their debts, well, barclays, virgin media, nationwide, capital one all supported this campaign, as did all the major debt charities, as did all the major Mental Health charities. There is no argument about this. Lenders dont wa nt to argument about this. Lenders dont want to send these letters, they know they are counter productive. If someone has a Mental Health issue and you scare them into such a state that they are take their life, you are that they are take their life, you a re less that they are take their life, you are less likely than ever to get the money back. You want to help people stay in society and keep their finances above water if you can. Then the company is more likely to get its money back. The individual is more likely to be a productive member of society, and that helps the economy. So if there are any naysayers on this, i would pooh pooh them quite strongly. We havent found many, actually. It seems universally agreed that if the language is clear, the creditors are more likely to get their cash back, which is why the banks support it. Can we put some questions to you from us . A couple of people have e mailed in saying they are receiving threatening letters over money they havent spent. They have reported it to the police and got a crime reference number, but they are still being threatened by court action. How can they clear their names . One says it has really had a detrimental impact on his Mental Health. I am sure it has. If you are in that situation, and it does happen that people get threatening letters over debts which are not theirs, either due to confusion or due to scams, i would talk to one of the nonprofit debt counselling agencies like step change, citizens advice and the National Debt line. People there will probably roll their eyes at this and not at you, because this happens quite a lot, that people get letters that they shouldnt. So talk to them and they shouldnt. So talk to them and they should see it through. If its a legitimate company threatening you, once you prove that it is not your debt, it should stop. If it is a scammer, we need to get the Police Involved and citizens advice x cam action involved. See one of the nonprofit debt counselling agents. Paul says he got into debt five yea rs paul says he got into debt five years ago and it led to a poorer credit record. He has cleared his that now and is in a good financial position, but his credit record is still affecting his capacity to borrow. What can he do, is there still that six year rule on his record . If you have a default on your record, it will clear after six yea rs. Your record, it will clear after six years. When it comes to credit scores, time is a great healer. The longer i go bad credit stuff is on your file, the less of an longer i go bad credit stuff is on yourfile, the less of an impact longer i go bad credit stuff is on your file, the less of an impact it has and it does disappear after five yea rs. Has and it does disappear after five years. There isnt anything you can do. We have to be careful. On the one hand, people say they want responsible lending. On the other hand, people try and clean up old credit scores. If you had a debt problem, it goes on your file so that lenders can see it and hopefully be responsible about how much they lend to you and what position they put you in. So we need the system to work, but it will disappear ina the system to work, but it will disappear in a years time and that will improve things for you. The only answer there is just to wait a bit. Finally, one from a worried pa rent bit. Finally, one from a worried parent which was unfamiliar to many. Her son is out of control with his spending, she is worried he is about to lose his car. She wants to intervene, but in a way that doesnt upset him. What would you say to people who care for someone who is losing control and they are not sure what to say . Again, we talk about in the letters is signposting. I mentioned the nonprofit debt counselling agencies, some of which can refer you to a Mental Health charity if that is an issue. The best thing to do is talk about it. In all the years i have been doing this, i have never seen a problem with debt that is unsolvable. It may not be quick or easy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. And the first step is to go and seek help and to start to work it through to stop the burrowing and see what is available. There is a lot they can take the pressure of an individual. So instead of berating, i would suggest that either by himself or if you go with him, go to a nonprofit debt counselling agency and see what they can do. It could make life a bit better. We have to be very careful about debt in this country. It causes many people such Mental Health problems. That is where the money on Mental Health policy institute continues to do campaigns like this. But there are places you can seek help. Thank you, a good reminder that no debt is insurmountable in the and you can ta ke insurmountable in the and you can take control of it. Louise and dan, the timing of this is interesting as we head into the into the winter. The predictions of mass unemployment and more people struggling to pay money that they owe, so it is important that the language around paying it back is a bit softer so that people dont feel out of control at a time when they are already vulnerable. Really good advice. Thanks. Tributes from across the music world are being paid to guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who has died at the age of 65. The co founder and lead guitarist of van halen had been suffering from throat cancer. Hes being remembered as a gifted musician with a big smile. Gene simmons of the rock band kiss was a friend and joins us now. Thank you for sharing some of your memories with us. He was a good friend of yours and you met him recently and spoke about his cancer . For me, this day has been very difficult. Even though this get up usually helps us rockers communicate better and is some kind of a shield, i couldnt take off the glasses. I have been teary eyed the whole day. What a tragedy. What a beautiful soul. People will tell you up and down from the jazz world to the classical world, certainly the rockers, what an amazing giant he was on guitar. That is indisputable, but i will tell you that the humbling part of all this for me is, if you ever spent time in the presence of Eddie Vanderdoes island eddie presence of Eddie Vanderdoes island Eddie Van Halen, he was a beautiful soul, somebody who was less about ego and more about hey, how are you doing, having a good day . Despite the stardom and the giant talent he had. I invite you to google any live van halen shows and watch the joy that this giant of guitars had in playing his instrument, just something to behold. I mentioned this before. It hit me like a punch in the face. Some said, Eddie Van Halen just died. What . And they said cancer and all that. I was aware that he was fighting that and we talked about it a few times. In the first image i had was of eddie smiling. That is the hunting part of it. His legacy is asa the hunting part of it. His legacy is as a giant of the Music Industry and gota is as a giant of the Music Industry and got a kind soul he was. My prayers and condolences, my heartfelt best wishes to the family. They must be devastated by what has happened. Indeed, only the good die young. Eddie was undeserving of this. Its lovely to hear you paying tribute to him. We have heard about his smile this morning. You saw him way back before he was super famous. You spotted him and took the band under your wing, didnt you . You spotted him and took the band underyourwing, didnt you . Was there Something Special immediately . Well, i was invited to go and see a few bands in 1977, and kiss had been around a while. We were already a big deal, so they stuck me in the who the hell do you think you are pa rt who the hell do you think you are part of it while the other folks we re part of it while the other folks were downstairs and people were coming overfor my were downstairs and people were coming over for my autograph. Were downstairs and people were coming overfor my autograph. You try to be nice, and this sound came up, likea try to be nice, and this sound came up, like a symphony of guitars, a sound like i had never heard. What the hell is that . It was the days before electronics and backing tracks and everything. The music was live, actual musicians playing alive. And i put people aside and went to the front and what i saw, i couldnt believe. Just one guy and one guitar and the lead singer flying up in the air with the brothers pounding away. The whole band is rocking, and this one kid, because he was about 2010, steps to the front and destroys that instrument and taps on it and does things i had never seen anyone do before. I was slack jawed. I can believe what i saw, so i send him right away, flew him to new york, put him up in a hotel and we went to Jimi Hendrixs old studio. By produced 15 of their songs. Producing is not the right word, because the guys just went out into the studio and played live. Like sinatra deal. The orchestra was there and they played live. And you can still google that, gene Simmons Van Halen demo and all that. And the sheer brilliance of that band is that one second eddie is playing chords and then in the solo, he jumps on just like a fury. If you have ever gone to a race where the ca rs are have ever gone to a race where the cars are going 200 miles an hour and you hear the zoom, it is just beyond anything i had ever heard. Let mejust say, let me just say, before i let mejust say, before i get. All bungled up here, because the words are. Getting. Jumbled, because of my emotional stuff. I would urge you, take young people by the scruff of the neck and force them to sit down and stop texting and tweeting tweeting just for a second. And introduce them, for the first time, to the wonder of Eddie Van Halen and the band. Let them hear greatness. Let them witness the joy that this kid had and the amazing god given gift that he had. And you may change a few minds. Im fairly convinced of it. And i know, right now, millions of fans around the world a re now, millions of fans around the world are blaring van halen, as in omagh. As an homage. Maybe that should be the legacy, the music. Interesting to hear your recollection is that talking about the smile, married with that incredible musical ability. You talk about young people. When you see the tributes, there have been those who knew him well and spent time with him in the 70s and 80s but also a generation of new, fresh musicians who never met him, but were inspired by his. Just the incredible ability to, as you say, to destroy the guitar. He was selftaught. He was classically trained on piano, but the astonishing thing was that eddie was the original drummer. His brother, alex, was the guitar player and midstream, they formed a band and midstream, they formed a band and decided you want to play drums, i will play lead guitar. That is him on classical piano. You want to talk about talent, beat that just. There hasnt been anyone like him before, during or since. There hasnt been anyone like him before, during orsince. And, again, ta ke before, during orsince. And, again, take your right hand and whack that cell phone out of little kids hands. When they are tweeting and doing all that nonsense just to find out what the latest young style is and what lipstick people are wearing, shut up and sit down and do something important to behold Eddie Van Halen. I think you will be inspiring lots of people to play it a very loud today, certainly me at least, and watch the concerts. That is the great thing about this area that we live in, you can do that. It looks so rock and roll, it looks so much fun, was he interested in the rock and roll lifestyle . You know, the lifestyle seems to have gone hand in hand with the self abuse and the money and the fame and the chicks and all that kind of stuff. Eddie was never really a part of that. I would fall to that seductive pa rt that. I would fall to that seductive part of it, which is the fame and adulation and all of that and they we re adulation and all of that and they were places like the rainbow and la and all around the world and people would come up and your ego would be satiated, arent i wonderful . I had never seen eddie in those places, he just loved what he did. Again, the word joy comes up. I will tell you Something Else about his soul, the dna of this kind guy. I never once heard him say anything bad about anybody. He would just shrug it off. And a sad testimony to thatis shrug it off. And a sad testimony to that is he had already. He had cancer and it was progressing. And people knew about it. It wasnt a secret. And i ran into eddie on the street. I hadnt seen him for a while. Of course, in the beginning, we talked a lot and we would hang out and he would come up to the house but i lost touch with him. And on the street in la i ran into him again. He said he was fine. I didnt know how to bring up the subject. And he brought it up. Yeah, man, ive got cancer, stuff like that. I didnt know what to say in response. And it brings tears to my eyes when i bring it up. And he said, hey, man, check this out, and he lifted his chin and he showed me what the ravages of cancer were doing to his upper palate. It was heartbreaking. And i was caught. I was lost for words. And eddie was sort of smoking a cigarette at the same time and he would just shrug and went, yeah, what are you going to do . And he was smiling and he went off happily. He was a guy that loved life and he really. Lived it. He lived it. And may be a wake up call to all of us. We complain about bad hair days and, of course, i always complain about them at the traffic and the people. Its like, get over yourself. What a wonderful thing life is. And Eddie Van Halens music should be a wake up call to all of us. I was lucky to have known the guy. I wish you could have met him. You would have been humbled. It has been wonderful to spend time with you this morning. Hearing your memories. You have paid a wonderful tribute to him and it is clear the admiration and friendship the pair of you had for each other, thank you very much for each other, thank you very much for being with us, gene simmons on bbc breakfast. Thank you. It is 8 52am. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Some of us have had a beautiful start to the day. As you can see from this weather watchers picture taken in inverness. For many, a drier day than yesterday. Brighter but some have showers and there is rain on the cards later. If we follow all this cloud in the satellite picture back out into the atlantic, that is an area of low pressure. Two other fronts draped around it coming our way later on today tonight before clearing tomorrow. A lot of dry weather this morning, afair tomorrow. A lot of dry weather this morning, a fair bit of sunshine, showers in Northern Ireland and england continuing to fade away. Showers across northern and western scotla nd showers across northern and western scotland and gusty winds persisting. The cloud will build through wales and south west and quarter of england and we will start to see some rain and strengthening winds. To push north we will have dry weather and still showers and gusty winds across parts of scotland. Temperatures ranging from 11 in the north to 17 in the south. This evening and overnight, the rain gathers speed as it moves from the west towards the east. Heavy bursts across wales, the north midlands and also Northern England. Gusty winds with it. In the south, quite murky tonight but mild. In the north, that band of rain and in the highlands a cooler night under clearer skies and we could see some patchy mist and fog forming. Tomorrow, we say goodbye to the first band of rain which will clear into the north sea. The second one goes south, eventually clearing and leaving quite a bit of cloud in its wake, particularly across lincolnshire and east anglia. Things will brighten up behind although there will still be a peppering of showers across northern and Western Areas. Temperatures tomorrow while ranging from 10 in the north to 17 in the south. More rain on friday and will turn cooler, more settled and windy for the weekend with some showers in the east. Now, there are creatures all around us that are so small you would probably not realise they are even there some are just the size of a grain of sand. A new wildlife show sets out to document the amazing lives of some of these animals using Incredible Technology and more than a little patience. Lets take a look. From 20 metres up. He just holds on tight. And here comes the rest of the clean up crew. The dung balls are rolled away, to be buried. Food for their young. Dramatic stuff, the narration there from the hollywood actor paul rudd. Tom hugh jones is the writer and producer of tiny world and joins us now from bristol. Good morning. The challenges are unique, you say tiny, give us an idea of the scale of the things you we re idea of the scale of the things you were trying to film. We filmed all sorts of tiny creatures. The smallest muggy in the world that fits in the palm of your hand, the smallest hummingbird, which is little bigger than a b, to creatures which are the size of a grain of sand. We filmed a crab that lives inside a snail shell that is the size of a grain of sand. We had to use a lot of technology to capture these things. Technology and quite a bit of patience required, i would i. Bit of patience required, i would imagine exactly. The clip you saw, the dung beetles, i spoke to the producer yesterday and he said it took 5 weeks to film that. One of the biggest problems, working in the jungle, dealing with the humidity and the rain and even once we had ove rco m e and the rain and even once we had overcome that, they had to somehow attract the dung beetles to come towards the cameras. What you think you would use is howler muggy dung but it turned out that the human equivalent would much more equivalent would much more equivalent howler muggy. We went beyond the call of duty we are looking at the animals now, do you have a favourite one . I think most people will like the really cute monkeys and rodents and that kind of thing but having been making wildlife film making films for so long, i have a passion for the slightly strange things. For example, in the outback episode, there is a gecko that shoots out this weird goo out of its hair. I never knew it existed. In the jungles film that is a caterpillar that does this amazing impression of a poisonous snake to scare off its enemies. I have wanted to film that for 20 years and we finally managed to capture it. Just talking about the technical challenge, we saw some pictures of the dung beetles falling down through the leaves, how on earth do you capture that in such perfect detail and clarity . In order to bring Small Creatures to life, you really have to get down into their world and film things from their world and film things from their perspective. We used all sorts of different Camera Technology and cinematic techniques to bring this to life. You are seeing hyper slow motion. We also had to use a lot of robotic camera work. When you are filming things on such a small scale, even the slightest hand wobble gets amplified in the image. A lot of the moves and stuff we tried to get into the cinematography to make it feel more like a movie, it is done robotically. We are watching robbins at the moment, explain a little bit about that. We have one episode set in a european garden. We really liked the idea of showing people you dont have to go to the amazon or the deserts of namibia to see these incredible beasts. When you are looking at the macro world, there isjust beasts. When you are looking at the macro world, there is just an amazing thing to find in your garden. We filmed robins living in european gardens and they are friendly with gardeners, people feel their mealworms but they are terrorised by sparrowhawks. I expect a lot of viewers will have woken up and seen a pile of feathers on their lawn in the morning. That is the work of a sparrowhawk, who is the predator of the garden. The pictures look amazing, we look forward to watching it. If you know the voice, paul rudd is the man who does the voice over, from hollywood films. The first six episodes are available now on apple tv. You are watching bbc breakfast and the time is 8 59am.
