Here on breakfast. Good morning. Its friday, april 24. Our top story 10 million essential workers and their families in england, will be able to book a test to tell them whether they have the coronavirus. Teachers, social workers and supermarket staff are among those who can sign up online for screening. There are also plans for up to 90 mobile units, run by the army, to test people unable to travel to drive through centres. Youve been sending in your questions which well put to a gp in the next half an hour. Well also be talking to the Health Secretary, matt hancock, at 7 30, and during our hero half hour, well celebrate some of the people who are keeping britain moving during the pandemic. First though, jon donnison has this report. Applause. It applause. It was my become a thursday night ritual. As britons once again came together to clapper for their carers. From then collect as to the royal family. Carers. From then collect as to the royalfamily. For a carers. From then collect as to the royal family. For a fifth week a show of support for the nhs and other key workers. Itsjust a little tiny thing that i can do to, you know, make some noisejust to say thank you. Every week. Every week . Not missed one . Not yet. And week . Not missed one . Not yet. And we wont. And some of our carers have made the ultimate sacrifice. In saint alans earlier a funeral earlier, a 58 year old orthopaedic surgeon, a earlier, a 58 year old orthopaedic surgeon, a husband and a father of four who lost his life to covid i9 as he worked to save others st helens. It is a big loss for me and a big loss for the trust. A big loss for his family. It will be very difficult for me as well, because in every corner of the hospital we have a memory. And the number of people grieving continues to grow. Latest show coronavirus related deaths in uk hospitals went up by 616 in 2a hours. But thats the lowest weekday increase in three weeks. It takes the total number of coronavirus hospital deaths to more than 18,700, though that figure is expected to be significantly higher as it does not include deaths in care homes and in the community. Meanwhile, the government has announced plans to expand testing for covid 19. All key workers, including supermarket staff, transport workers, and teachers, as well as their families, will be eligible for a test if they are showing symptoms. From today, employers of essential workers will be able to go on guv. Uk to get a test for a ny be able to go on guv. Uk to get a test for any of their staff who need a test. And from tomorrow any essential workers who need a test will be able to book an appointment themselves directly. But the government is still struggling to meet its target of 100,000 test a day by the end of this month says testing and tracing contacts will be key if the lockdown is to be eased in the months ahead. And some businesses are reopening, thank you, which is already reopened 75 stores this week, will reopen a further 80 today, with social distancing measures in place. Carmakers including Jaguar Land Rover and aston martin have also said they will reopen some of their plants. Jon donnison, bbc news. Were joined now from westminster by our political correspondent, leila nathoo. Leila, is this a way for the government to try to meet its target of 100,000 tests per day . Good morning. We have a target hanging over matt hancock, 100,000 test per day by the end of this month. Now were seeing a new way people to sign up to ask for a test. Yes. If you break down that 100,000 target, you need the capacity to do 100,000 tests a day and you need enough people to test. At the moment capacity stands at about 50,000, thatis capacity stands at about 50,000, that is about halfway there with a week ago. The government say they are confident they will meet that, they will be opening you drive through testing centres, they have mobile units going out to care homes to test staff and patients there they can operate from these drive through centres. The problem so far is there hasnt been enough demand for testing. 0nly so far is there hasnt been enough demand for testing. Only half the capacity is being used at the moment. So now you see this expansion of test from initially hospital patients and nhs frontline staff to now all key workers, you can sign up by the website and book yourself a test. They hoped that by widening access to the test they can get more people tested. There was a mission last night from professional john newton who is in charge of testing and he said the social distancing measures have been very effective in reducing the number of people who might want a test. So people who might want a test. So people who might have symptoms and are self isolating because family members have symptoms. But remember testing is going to be crucial Going Forward because when the transmission rate comes down and the lockdown measures are eased there is going to need to be huge Testing Capacity to rapidly isolate and test all people in a sort of Community Outbreak to stop that outbreak spreading. So the government definitely still do want to meet the target by the end of this month. Also, the Prime Minister, there are reports that Prime MinisterBoris Johnson will be back to work on monday. Can you shed any light on that . There are these reports. Of course everyone is that . There are these reports. Of course everyone is keen to know when borisjohnson will be back in action. For many of us, the clap for carers tribute has become a ray of positivity in uncertain times. Last night, for the fifth week running, millions of usjoined in a round of applause from ourfront doors, windows and in our gardens, to thank those working on the frontline. Breakfasts tim muffett has been speaking to one family with a very personal reason to join the applause. Applause the sound of clapping. To bimian it is the sound of survival. Bimiam had been in intensive care for 12 days with covid 19 and pneumonia. He was placed on a ventilator and into an induced coma. I thought i had died and then i never thought id come back. I did not say goodbye to my kids. It was very hard. Of course i became emotional. The doctor told me it was very bad it was the darkest time in my life. We know the nhs staff went the extra mile to save his life. He became the first person to leave this hospital in kent having recovered from covid 19. An exhilarating feeling for the entire team because he was the first patient who came out of icu. Gradually building up to the climax of seeing him walk out back to his loved ones and his family. It is a good feeling. I dont know how it even worked to save these people. They are amazing people. They treat you like a parent, like a brother. You dont believe it how they treat you. It is 8 oclock. Applause although the weekly round of applause has become a communal event, for some it feels incredibly personal. And with good reason. Someone who saved your life, it is the biggest thing. So these people deserve more than this. If i could do anything. They helped my dad a lot when he needed it so we appreciate the nhs. How does this feel . Is this personal for you . It is. They deserve more than this. It is personal. Thank you so much. You are going to make me emotional. The nhs applauded him when he left hospital, now a chance for him to applaud them back. A chance he so nearly not have. Weve been speaking to the people who are keeping britain moving during the pandemic and today were focussing on lorry drivers who are playing a hugely important role. Theyre responsible for keeping the supermarket shelves stocked with our Everyday Essentials. Eddie stobart drivers are currently making 40000 deliveries every week. Adam mclean can tell us more. All the drivers coming to work at the moment. We have an amazing turnout. It is fantastic. This Distribution Centre is full of fresh produce. From here, it is loaded onto lorries and take it to Stores Across the north. These drivers are all part of a team making more than 40,000 deliveries a week. We are solely reliant on our drivers. They get the stock into us to get them onto our shelves. Into this whole journey, they have been so important to make sure we can feed the nation. Together, this team of drivers are each doing their part to keep britain moving. Adam mclean, bbc news and thank you very much to them. President trump has a history of floating his unique ideas but he came up with some surprising suggestions during his press briefing overnight. Including injecting patients with disinfectant. It was quickly dismissed by medical experts. Supposing we had the body with a tremendous whether it is ultraviolet or very powerful light and i think you said, that is not been checked, they will check it. You can do it through the skin or in some other way. And i think you said you were going to test that as well. It sounds interesting. And then i see that disinfectant, in a minute can wipe it out and it is a minute we can do Something Like that. By injection. 0r can do Something Like that. By injection. Or it gets on the lung and gets a tremendous thing. I would be interested to check on that but you would have to use medical doctors but it sounds interesting to me so we can see doctors but it sounds interesting to me so we can see whether the concept of the light but it is pretty powerful. The most striking observation to that is that solar light appears to have in killing the virus in surfaces and into the air. We have seen that with temperature and humidity where increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favourable to the virus. There were some things coming out of the Washington Press briefing overnight. I have to tell you, a gorgeous view outside salford this morning. This is what dates for us when we leave the programme. Lots to do before then. I wonder if the rest of the country is going to be experiencing that. Oh, you about beach heart another sunny day. This was the scene yesterday in east sussex. This is where we saw the highest of the temperatures, reaching 24 degrees. Lets put a few numbers on that. Quite a few of you got above 20 celsius yesterday. Compared to where we should be, we should be anything mid teens. Quite warm and dry spell at the moment. For many that will continue. 0ut there this morning, still pretty chilly by night. A touch of frost. Across some parts of Eastern England, some dense fog patches but they will quickly clear. They should be gone by mid morning and back to where you were, disguised, easy sunshine for some. Cloud over the east of scotland throughout the day and cloud building and the channel islands. Widely into the 20s into southern and western parts of the uk but later, with that bit of cloud and temperatures lifting, on the heels of South West England, Late Afternoon and evening showers into the night. Also tonight, low level cloud across eastern counties of england. Temperatures down into single figures for many. A touch of frost limited to parts of Northern England and scotland especially. Into the weekend we go and it looks like it is going to be warm. Gradually turns cooler. And a greater chance of showers particularly by the time you hit sunday. Saturday, more cloud on the eastern coast of england. Some coastal counties. Still the chance of ploughs and showers towards wales and the south west. Many parts will stay dry. Chance of clouds. Well speak to scott mills, wholl reveal the chart topper on his radio 1 programme this afternoon. Find out what he thinks. Good morning. Heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news. Teachers, social workers and supermarket staff are among the 10 million key workers and theirfamilies in england who can now book a test to find out whether they have coronavirus. The Health Secretary, matt hancock, made the announcement yesterday, along with plans for up to 90 mobile units run by the army to test people unable to travel to drive through centres. Its time now for us to put some of your coronavirus questions to a gp. Joining us today is dr hamed khan. Heres a gp and also a lecturer. Good morning to you. Love need to speak to you. How are you . Very well thank you. We are checking in regularly with gps. How are things working for your practice and your patience and the relationship between you . I think it is as well as it can be in these difficult times. The thing about general practitioners is we see patients of every age group, every specialty in a variety of settings, so we are adaptable, innovative and creative then we put back to very good use in this entirely new world we are in at the moment. Presumably people are not coming into the surgery, you are working out different means of seeing people. That is right. We have put our adaptability and creativeness to use to devise new sorts of consulting models and techniques enabling us to use consulting remote in a way that is effective. We are seeing face to face patients where necessary. In my own practice, where i have absolutely had to call patients into see them, where i have not been able to do everything i need to do remotely, i had called them in and seen them face to face. The second point to note is even though it may be less desirable in some ways, when you consider the huge numbers of patients that we see, hundreds of patients would go through consulting rooms in a single day and a potentially huge risk of transmission that could occur in a setting like that from doctors to patients, from patients to doctors, from patients to each other in a waiting room, a move to remote consulting has had Huge Positive impact in preventing transmission. Few people messaging this morning about gp surgeries. Should gps be seeing people in a century . Also whether there is concern, may be among gps, that people are staying away for fear of using up your time unnecessarily. A surgery. There have been worries about that. |j unnecessarily. A surgery. There have been worries about that. I also work in paediatric a e in addition to my gp work. Something we have seenin to my gp work. Something we have seen in our paediatric a e department is the number of children presenting to a e has reduced over the last few weeks and a lot of my collea g u es the last few weeks and a lot of my colleagues are now worried that children who need to be in hospital, he might have other non covid serious illnesses are not coming to hospital and, as a group, we are trying our best to encourage people to bring their children and when they need to. It is important to remember that although covid 19 is terrible in many ways and so on and so false, the other illnesses that make people very unwell also exist. There will still be severe asthma attacks, there will still be other serious acute problems that could also be potentially fatal and make people very unwell. We must make sure the fear of covid 19 doesnt almost get worse than the outcomes of covid 19 in that sense. 0ur message is that if you need to go to a e, if you need acute care and feel seriously and well then coming to see us and make sure you get treated. That point is well worth making. A couple of questions from the audience. This is on the subject of masks. Daryl wants to know, if he decides to cover his mouth with a scarf ora decides to cover his mouth with a scarf or a mask when he is out and about the and how long should he wearable . How should he clean it . How should he dispose of it . Those are very how should he dispose of it . Those are very specific questions. I understand there is going to be advice from the government soon when the advice comes out it is important to look at that and adhere to it. The principles that are important are, generally speaking, when we wear masks or anything on our faces, well have a temptation to touch our faces and it is important to avoid that. If you touch something that is contaminated and you touch your lips or your eyes you might infect yourself in that process, so it is important to keep in mind. It is important to keep in mind. It is important wear masks properly. I have seen people in supermarkets and so on often wear masks which are below their face or not having their nose and so on. It is important their nose and the mouth are fully covered in that way and it is important to dispose of masks properly once you have used them so you are not wearing something that is infected when you should not be. It is also important to make sure you are wearing the right type of mask. This one from jonathan. Can things like vaping and smoking spread coronavirus through the air . Iam not spread coronavirus through the air . I am not sure about that one. Coronavirus is spread through droplets transmission but i am not entirely sure about how those droplets might work with vaping and smoking. I dont want to give you a half baked answer, i am not sure. Lot of people would have huge respect for you for that. What is the most common thing that people are asking you . By way of General Health at the moment. Is there a tea m health at the moment. Is there a team of things people are most concerned about . No one single theme. In general practice we are still trying our best to manage the huge chronic disease workload we have in making sure that peoples diabetes and asthma and so on are still as well controlled as they can be and those things are really important because we know that people with things like asthma and diabetes tend to do worse with this illness so it is important if you have those illnesses that you do not ta ke have those illnesses that you do not take your foot off the pedal and your control of that is as effective as possible. On other acute types of presentations, we continue to get the presentations we usually get. 0bviously people worry when they have a cough or they add features of a chest infection, as to whether it might be covid 19 or not and we try and explain the features that distinguish covid 19 and we try to safety net as best we can so they seek attention when they are unwell with it. If symptoms are mild but we try to provide reassurance because it is important to remember the vast majority of people with covid 19 get the milderform of the illness which gets better itself without any intervention. Have you been able to get a coronavirus test . |j intervention. Have you been able to get a coronavirus test . I have not been tested but thankfully i had been tested but thankfully i had been well without symptoms and have not had to explore that avenue. I have had colleagues who have been tested and a fair few have been positive. I will tell you i am noticing that the link we had to you is brilliant today, it is almost film quality. Hill is in charge . In all honesty it is my barber, he is far better with technology than i am. far better with technology than i am. Who is in charge . Far better with technology than i am. Who is in charge . Nice to speak to you this morning. Stay well. My father. We always make the assumption it is a problem for older people. I love the way he said, ido older people. I love the way he said, i do not know the answer so im not going to give you any misinformation. How are you physically this morning . There was some exertion for you yesterday evening. I sat in the saddle for three and a half hours. Good job this seat is padded. I quipped about 8 30pm. By then louise and darren, they were still going at midnight. I was in bed by then but i am 0k, probably better than louise and dan who went further. We start with football and england womens head coach phil neville should step down from his role now according to former lioness, rachel brown finnis. Neville will leave the role at the end of his contract injuly 2021. That was due to be after the womens european championships, which will take place in england but the tournament has been postponed by a year due to coronavirus. And now, brown finnis thinks nevilles departure is a big opportunity to grow the game. I do think that the net has to be cast very, very far and wide. It is going to be really exciting actually because i think phil neville was brilliant for profiling the womens game and i think was a bit left field in some ways. You know, he didnt have a huge amount of experience but he did have a brilliant effect. Viewing figures that we had, more people watching the game than ever before was really exciting for progress in womens football but we need the next level now. We need someone who is going to bring that and much more. Celtic could once again be crowned champions of scotland, without another match taking place this season. Thats following new guidelines from the european governing body, uefa. They are urging leagues, to use their best efforts and explore all possible options to complete seasons. But have said campaigns can end now under special circumstances. With at least eight games left to play, celtic are 13 points clear of second place rangers but are due to play their rivals twice, who also have a game in hand. Hearts meanwhile are four points from safety at the bottom, so could be relegated. Over in germany, meanwhile, the top division, the bundesliga, has suggested they might return to action with games behind closed doors as early as next month. The 36 professional clubs met yesterday to discuss a restart of the season in may. However, germanys football authorities still face some huge questions before they get the green light to resume football in the country. Meanwhile, the 2020 european athletics championships in paris have been cancelled amid the Coronavirus Crisis. Dina asher smith helped Great Britain top the medal table at the 2018 event in berlin. However, this years championship, which was due to be held between 25th august to 30th august is off. 0ne sporting event that is still due to go ahead this summer is the World Snooker championship. That was due to be going on now. It was postponed because of the pandemic but has been re scheduled for the end ofjuly. 0rganisers says it will assess government advice at the time about the number of spectators, allowed inside the crucible. Reigning champion judd trump believes its a big opportunity for snooker to take centre stage. It could be a sort of a major platform for snooker. A lot of the other sports with bigger crowds and sort of more opponents to play against is going to be harder, more difficult for them to be back up and running but snooker is only one on one. Youve got the referee, maybe one or two cameramen in the arena so its one of the few sports where you can play with a very small amount of people and sort of get back up and running ahead of everyone else. At this time of year, were used to seeing thousands of people gather in the us for the nfl draft. Well, as you can imagine, things are a bit different this year. Its taking place over a video stream. Heres how the first pick, quarterbackjoe burrow, at home with his family, found out hed been selected by the cincinnati bengals. Hello . Were going to turn the card, make you the number one pick and make you a cincinnati bengal. Appreciate that, coach. Ready to go. Excited about it. His family seem really excited there, making sure that tv is turned down. Before i go, sporting stars did their bit for the big night in, with a spinning challenge at home. The idea was to spin around ten times and then do what they normally do best. Troy deaney of watford trying to smash in a penalty. But its into the neighbours garden. Thats more than a wide from england cricketer sam curran. They want people to share videos and donate to the big night in fundraising effort. Sam quek making a visit to the flower beds. Now remember these are professionals, so this is proof how difficult it is be very careful if youre tempted to try it at home. Well done to troy deeney, though, at least he managed to score between the bins at the end. Did you shoot the Tommy Fleetwood one . I saw that last night. Very funny. Jose mourinho, as well. He kicked the ball and it didnt even make the goal, did it . Tell us a bit more about your own personal challenge, mike . I was more about your own personal challenge, mike . Iwas taking more about your own personal challenge, mike . I was taking part in the waste bike in. The idea was to try to cycle 100 miles from home ona to try to cycle 100 miles from home on a static bike. I did find it quite tough, im used to cycling outside. I lasted 3. 5 hours. The technology failed me and i have no idea how far it went, because it kept telling me i was only doing three kilometres an hour and i was pedalling really hard i gave up on the technology in the end and just kept going for 3. 5 hours. A Real Community spirit. 0n kept going for 3. 5 hours. A Real Community spirit. On one of the apps i think there were 1700 riders all taking part at once. Sallyjoined late on, at about eight oclock. We we re late on, at about eight oclock. We were singing, dancing on the bikes. It was a great way to raise money. Well done to louise and dan. I think louise finally finished after midnight having completed 100 miles. That is amazing. Granted list last quite late into the evening. We couldnt sit down at the end, i know that. Keep that cushion handy, mike well done, mike. Well done all of them. Well done all of them. Have you noticed the cost of your weekly shop has gone up . If so, youre not alone. Ben is looking at why this could be happening. You would think people would be taking advantage of the bargains, 342, but there are not as many . Yes, we are talking about those money off deals. Lots of you have been getting in touch then you cant seem to find those special offers. That initially was because the supermarkets wanted us to not panic buy when there were shortages of certain items. It seems that even though that has gone away, the offers have not returned. It can make quite a difference. Market Research Firm assosia did some research for us. They monitored how many promotions were Available Online at our five biggest supermarkets. They found that between the first week of march and this week, the number of offers fell by a quarter. At asda, morrisons and sainsburys there were 15 fewer promotions. At tesco and waitrose, they were down by more than 40 . At those two, there were way fewer offers on things like frozen food, Baby Products and pet care. And household products. And for some shoppers on a budget, they lack of offers is a big problem. Charities have told us that a lot of families rely on these deals to do their weekly shop. With so many people not working or struggling with their businesses, income might already be squeezed. Not the best time to be spending more on shopping. Single mum hannah told us her experience. We are buying more snacks because the children are at home all the time. They get bored. When youre bored, you need more. Normally we would just have the odd thing for them to have in the evening after school, but now we have snacks and so they can eat all the way through the week. When you get the 342 offers, i would always buy that instead of just buying offers, i would always buy that instead ofjust buying one, whatever makes it more Cost Effective in the long run, but that has almost disappeared out of the shops now. The things that i do get cost more than i would normally pay for them. Someone has already got in touch, came, saying that her shopping has certainly gone up. She cant shop in person is always relying on deliveries from her usual shop. She is spending more are getting less. People are noticing these changes at the moment. What are the supermarkets saying . We do have a certain amount of choice if you cant get out, but if youre stuck using the Online Delivery Services it is pretty specific but you have to choose. We spoke to all the supermarkets mentioned in this research. They said, first of all, some multibuys and buy one get one free offers had been stopped to discourage stockpiling and to simplify things. It also puts less pressure on staff to keep shelves stocked. Sainsburys say they actually stopped multibuys a couple of years ago to reduce food waste and encourage healthier eating. Morrisons wanted to point out that the majority of their shoppers bought items in store and this research only looks at online promotions. Asda said, whilst some promotions had been removed, they had tried to make the individual product prices cheaper so that people could still get the same deals. Tesco told us it had been responsible, given the unprecedented demand, and was working with suppliers and customers. Waitrose told us that promotions took a lot of staff time and they wanted their employees to focus on restocking shelves and helping customers out. Let me know if youve noticed a difference in how much youre paying for your food shopping. Get in touch. E mail us at bbcbreakfast bbc. Co. The first human trial in europe of a Coronavirus Vaccine has begun in oxford. Two volunteers, both scienists, have been injected and are the first of more than 800 adults on england whove been recruited for the study. Half will receive the covid 19 vaccine and half a control vaccine, which protects against meningitis. The volunteers described it as a privilege to take part. Im a scientist so i want to try and support the scientific process whenever i can. Since i dont study viruses i felt a bit useless these days so i thought this would be an easy way for me to support the cause, thats why im here. Im excited. I am going to sit here and incubate this thing and hopefully provide some good follow up data and hopefully itll work. It seemed like the right thing to do to try and combat this disease. You can never fully exclude any sort of potential risk, but you have to walk in faith with these things. You have to trust that the work has been done as best they can and the cause is important. Were joined now by professor andrew pollard, who is director of the oxford vaccine group. Thank you very much for talking to us this morning. You must be very excited. I did go yesterday . M us this morning. You must be very excited. I did go yesterday . It is great to finally have the trial under way. We have had several months of very intense work to get to this point. Very good news to be finally under way. We are just at the start of a very Big Development to the first of all assess the safety a nd to the first of all assess the safety and whether the vaccine works, then to test it in different age groups and target populations. Take me through the timeline. The first two have been injected with either the meningitis vaccine or the potential covid 19 vaccine. How long then until they are assumed to be inoculated, immune, and how would that be tested . There are two aspects to this. The first is the safety one. The reason why we started with two volunteers is to make sure there are no unexpected effects. We will monitor them very closely. Then we will move onto larger groups of individuals over the next few weeks. That is one aspect of it. The question you asked about how we will know if the immune response is, we are tracking down from now, but we dont expect to see very much for about ten days up to two weeks after the vaccine, because thatis two weeks after the vaccine, because that is how long it takes for the immune system to really get going to make strong responses after a vaccine. When you want to test how strong the responses to an external infection, how do you expose those who have had that injection for two weeks to that virus . The first thing is to test their immune response. Those blood test to look at how strong the immune responses. As far as saying whether it protects them, they have to be exposed to the virus out in the community. There isnt very much virus around at the moment. The lockdown has had a big impact on transmission. It is difficult to predict exactly when they will get the virus. It depends a bit on how long lockdown changes, if we see more transmission of the virus we may get an answer quicker. If we stay much more socially distanced it will take longer. If we stay much more socially distanced it will take longerlj if we stay much more socially distanced it will take longer. I am the first person to say i am not a scientist and i bow down to your expertise completely. In terms of timing, why would you wait for you are those who have taken the vaccine should be put into a social situation and to see if they come across someone who is infected, why wouldnt you deliberately expose them so the results come quicker . We can with many different diseases deliberately expose individuals to try to answer that question. This is an area where scientists internationally are actively engaging in the discussion about how that might be done. There are a number of issues that slow things down with that. The first we dont yet have a human model for challenging coronavirus. Before you can either start the vaccine experiments, you have to set up a model where you know is safe dose to give the volunteers, to test that and see what proportion of them get infected, so you know the characteristics. So it wouldnt be safe just to put them in a room with someone who has coronavirus and is symptomatic . Of course, the issue with that is you potentially are putting those individuals at risk and we know that people have had large exposures to the virus, some of become extremely well, including some young people. At this moment we dont have a treatment for coronavirus, so we would have to do this extremely carefully. Also, you would want to have some consistency in the dose that people are exposed to because, for example, if you give a bigger dose to those in the control group and they all got diseased, and a lower dose to those with the vaccine, you can make your bags ina with the vaccine, you can make your bags in a very good without it actually working. It would be very important to have a consistent way to maintain the integrity of the science around it. Any idea as to when this could be ruled out, if the test and subsequent results are successful . If there was not so transmission of the virus at the moment we will be having results of whether the study works within a few months. Of course, if there is not much transmission it may take much longer. From this first trial we have to do larger trials, include target age groups like older adults who are more susceptible. We still have months of work ahead of us, evenif have months of work ahead of us, even if we are able to show the vaccine works relatively quickly. The next step is to upskilled the production of the vaccine so we have enough to use for people. That is quite a heavy lift ticket from the small scale issues to the large numbers of doses that are needed. Small scale issues to the large numbers of doses that are neededm is fascinating talking to you. Everyone wishes you well with the development of it. Thank you very much for talking to us. Heres matt with a look at this mornings talking to us. Weather. Another sunny day across much of the country. Yesterday we saw temperatures peak at 24 celsius. 20 degrees across many parts of the uk. At this time of year we should be in the teens, so a significant warm speu the teens, so a significant warm spell this week. Mist and fog in the east of england at the moment. A bit chilly in the far north of scotland and england first thing. A bit more cloud into the north east of scotla nd cloud into the north east of scotland and the small chance of a shower in wales and the south west later. Temperatures might not have 24 celsius, but widely into the low 20s. Still a bit cooler down the eastern coast. Into the night time, waste could see a few heavy, isolated showers in wales and the south west. Be very careful if youre tempted to try it at home. Good morning. Teachers, social workers and supermarket staff are among those who can sign up online for screening. There are also plans for up to 90 mobile units, run by the army, to test people unable to travel to drive through centres. Youve been sending in your questions, which well put to a gp well also be talking to the Health Secretary, matt hancock, in around half an hour. First though, jon donnison has this report. Applause. Its become a thursday night ritual, as britons once again came together to clap for their carers. From bin collectors to the royal family. For a fifth week, a show of support for the nhs and other key workers. Its just a little tiny thing that i can do to, you know, make some noise just to say thank you. Every week. Every week . Yeah. Not missed one . Not yet. And we wont. And some of our carers have made the ultimate sacrifice. In st helens earlier, a funeral earlier for sadeq elhowsh, a 58 year old orthopaedic surgeon. A husband and a father of four who lost his life to covid 19 as he worked to save others. Its family to me. Its a big loss for me and a big loss for the trust. A big loss for his family. It will be very difficult for me as well because in every corner of the hospital we have a memory. And the number of people grieving continues to grow. Latest figures show coronavirus related deaths in uk hospitals went up by 616 in 24 hours. All key workers, including supermarket staff, transport workers, and teachers, as well as their families, will be eligible for a test if theyre showing symptoms. From today, employers of essential workers will be able to go on gov. Uk to get a test for any of their staff who need a test. And from tomorrow any essential workers who need a test will be able to book an appointment on gov. Uk themselves directly. But the government, still struggling to meet its target of 100,000 tests a day by the end of this month, says testing and tracing contacts will be key if the lockdown is to be eased in the months ahead. And some businesses are reopening, b q, which has already reopened 75 stores this week, will reopen a further 80 today, with social distancing measures in place. Carmakers, including Jaguar Land Rover and aston martin, have also said they will reopen some of their plants. Jon donnison, bbc news. Were joined now from westminster by our political correspondent, leila nathoo. This is an important day in many ways. A new style of testing or at least the mechanics of how people can geta least the mechanics of how people can get a test are changing. Tell us more about it. The government has widened access to who can be tested. Initially it was hospital patients who are the priority and then it was expanded to nhs workers and front line care staff. Now it is being broadened more widely to any key worker who is isolating because they have symptoms themselves or any of theirfamily have symptoms themselves or any of their family members do as well. The idea is people get tested and get back to work if they have tested negative will get the appropriate treatment if they are positive. The government has made a commitment to get to 100,000 tests being carried out today by the end of the month. There is a week to go. It stands at 50,000 tests they had capacity for. 0ne 50,000 tests they had capacity for. One big problem is that has not been enough demand. Not even half of that capacity is currently being used. What is happening is there are mobile testing units that will go out to care homes to try to test staff and patients, there are drive through centres for nhs staff. People who sign up on the government website today will be referred to a drive through centre and they are being rolled out across the country. The issue for the government is to try to get demand for testing up to people can be tested and they can get on their way to meeting that target of 100,000 people. It is important for people to get tested so they can understand what treatment they need and for the government to be able to understand the spread of the disease so they can the spread of the disease so they ca n start the spread of the disease so they can start to understand how many people have actually had coronavirus so far. Had been suggestions that borisjohnson may so far. Had been suggestions that Boris Johnson may be so far. Had been suggestions that borisjohnson may be back at work fairly soon. What do you know about that . Downing street has said they had no official timetable for when borisjohnson will be back in charge. It is interesting to see how the mechanics of these things work or dont work. We are speaking to matt hancock at 7 30am. The us President Donald Trump has said Boris Johnson sounded sharp and energetic when they spoke by telephone on tuesday. Retail sales have seen their biggest monthly fall ben can tell us more. Not so much of a surprise considering most are close to me cannot buy anything. It definitely falls into that not a huge supplies but hugely important category. We have had their latest figures looking at last month, this is from the start of march till the start of april. They show overall sales are down by 5 . It may not sound like a lot and let me explain why it is that figure. That is the largest full since records began. That shows how significant this is. Unsurprisingly, things on the high street went like clothing sales, fell sharply by more than 34 . Fuel sales, because we are not driving anywhere, they were down significantly as well. You might think the overall figure should be worse but we are buying more online and more food than we did before same sales of food in supermarkets is up by10 , same sales of food in supermarkets is up by 10 , which has helped to skew the figure a little bit. It is worth looking at online as well because more of us are forced to shop online because we cannot get out onto the high street all the shops. The proportion of all sales that were dominated by online, 22 . Of all the cells we made 22 were done online, that is a record figure. This is really important because the Service Sector accounts for three quarters of the economy. Retail. A huge part of the contribution to economic growth. With Stores Closed and sales falling it could have a huge impact on the wider economy. I know you will be doing more on that later on. In normal times, a dramatic drop in the number of people reporting cancer symptoms would be a cause for celebration but these are not normal times. The Cancer Charity macmillan has become the latest organisation to warn that the pandemic is not only stopping new patients from seeking help but its also draining them of cash and staff. Macmillans chief executive, lynda thomas, joins us now along with emma wright, whos recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. A very good morning to you both. Emma, maybe we can chat to you first. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us this morning. Everybody is contending with difficult times in relation to coronavirus that you have had a very personal Health Problem that has emerged at the same time, a diagnosis. Take us through a short timeline. When did you first notice there was a problem . What did you do . Good morning. Iwas there was a problem . What did you do . Good morning. I was diagnosed on lea p year do . Good morning. I was diagnosed on leap year day, the 29th of february, just before everything, pick covid 19 situation went completely crazy. It has been a roller coaster ofa crazy. It has been a roller coaster of a couple of months really. Very quickly correct my story is that i found a lump in my right breast on monday, i went to the gp the next day to get it checked out and i was fast tracked to the local breast ca re centre fast tracked to the local Breast Care Centre on saturday where i was given an ultrasound, a mammogram and a biopsy and i was told at the end of that they were 99 sure it was cancer. I found out of that they were 99 sure it was cancer. Ifound out the result that indeed it was. My diagnosis and going from someone that did not have cancer to someone living with cancer happened over six days. It was a fairly quick shock to the system. You are going to a very challenging time. How do you think the Coronavirus Crisis and the way it is affecting the nhs, what impact is that having on the service you are getting . The service i have had has been great. Living with cancer is like living with something inside you and the thought of that growing and spreading is quite frankly terrifying. I was lucky that i was able to start my treatment. It has meant that some of the other services i could have accessed have not been available, and also having face to face time with oncologists and nurses is obviously difficult at the moment. That support alongside the moment. That support alongside the medical treatment is so important. It is like having the control taken out of your hands. It is not just about the treatment, control taken out of your hands. It is notjust about the treatment, it is notjust about the treatment, it is an emotional ride, for sure. Thank you for talking to us on brea kfast. Thank you for talking to us on breakfast. Your story is something that so many people will be relating to. We have spoken to gps who are worried that people with symptoms are not going to their gps. We wish you all the best for your treatment coming up. Linda thomas, i want to quote something to you. The chief medical officer of the Rutherford Cancer Centres has gone on social media and said i genuinely feared that delays in cancer diagnosis could result in more fatalities than from coronavirus. You would be forgiven for thinking we had found a cu re forgiven for thinking we had found a cure for cancer overnight. It is a relentless evil, we need to get our act together on this, and fast. You see the fear that people have when it comes to coronavirus and the effo rts when it comes to coronavirus and the efforts being put into that. Cancer has not gone away, is this doctor has not gone away, is this doctor has said. That is absolutely right. Up has said. That is absolutely right. Up to 75 less people are being referred into hospitals than we would expect to be. Every we would expect about a thousand people to be diagnosed with cancer and at the moment that number is significantly down emmas story says it all. She was fast tracked, within six days she had a diagnosis. The nhs is very much open for business when it comes to cancer. At macmillan, we are hearing from people wondering if they should really bother the nhs right now. Our messages if you have any signs or symptoms, please do get in touch with your gp and get it checked out. If you are at all worried doing that, kept in touch with our Macmillan Cancer support helpline, which is their seven days a week. How much funding are you saying moved down, have you seen any change in terms of the support you are given to nhs staff, as well . Yes, for sure. We are doing everything we can to support front line, we have 10,000 Cancer Specialists out there supporting people. We have seen some of our people. We have seen people moved off cancer to coronavirus and we are trying to help support that. We are prioritising everything we can we have launched a Coronavirus Fund today to enable us to be able to support everybody during this time. We are hoping to raise £5 million. To give you an example of what that might look like, we have launched a telephone body service for people around the country, recognising that perhaps that face to face support there as much as it was before the coronavirus. I met million body will be in contact with somebody for 12 weeks, or longer if needed, to help them through everything. We are hoping to be able to launch a new psychological support service, recognising that people at this moment, cancer is the thing that makes people most anxious. At this moment, cancer and coronavirus, anxiety levels are at an all time high. We want to be able to support people. That is macmillan because my job right now, to say whatever is happening out there, we have to be able to support living with cancer right now. Emma, we need to give you the last stop on that this morning. What is your go to thank for keeping the spirits up at the moment . What is your go to thank for keeping the spirits up at the moment7m what is your go to thank for keeping the spirits up at the moment . It is reaching out to friends and family the best that you can, whether that is on the best that you can, whether that isona the best that you can, whether that is on a video call orjust chatting because you can see them. Lots of positive music, loads of disco music, and there is support out there. I have got a macmillan nurse, sarah, i have a match her yet, we have only talked on the telephone. It is finding support and may be a different way than you would have done before. I know it is a long process ahead of me and i have at least five years of treatment, so it is one day at the time, and i think thatis is one day at the time, and i think that is probably a mantra for a lot of people at the moment. Just one day at a time and we will get through it together. Day at a time and we will get through it togetherlj day at a time and we will get through it together. I like the sound of the disco music. I know it is not officially at therapy, but it is not officially at therapy, but it is therapeutic. Thank you both this morning. Thank you for your time. It isa morning. Thank you for your time. It is a mantra over everything. 0ne day at a time. Good luck. Good luck. Staff at a care home on the isle of wight have moved into tents in order to shield vulnerable residents from the coronavirus outbreak. Nine of the 31 staff at victoria care home in ryde have left their partners, families and children to isolate in the front garden of the home, which now has a no one in and no one out policy. Were joined by manager, Claire Leggett and also by Sharon Simpson who is a carer. Very good morning to you, ladies. What a lovely day you have therefore sitting in the garden. Morning. Yes, its lovely. It looks perfect. Can you describe to us how this operation now works . Is the tent behind you, is that home . Describe how it works. We have two tents behind us in the garden here which some of the staff are staying in. We have a set up inside the building where some of us have sleeping arrangements. This is our home for the foreseeable, yes. Sharon, talk us through the sleeping arrangements, if you dont mind. How co mforta ble arrangements, if you dont mind. How comfortable is it on the tenth . M is quite comfortable. I do have a heater and a sleeping bag. It is quite comfortable. Some mornings, claire will bring me a coffee, so that warms me up, as well. No, it is working well. You are taking a very big personal decision to do this. You are separating away from your own families in order to care for those people. Went out decision was made, what was she thinking . M those people. Went out decision was made, what was she thinking . It was made, what was she thinking . It was made over a week ago. We moved in last wednesday. The reason behind this decision, i didnt take it lightly by any means, but i did not think there was any option, to be honest. I thought if i didnt do this, it would be a case of if it came into the care home, and i didnt want to coming into the care home, at all. I have such amazing staff around me that i decided to ask the team about moving in, to which they were all very much on board with. Sharon, everyone has had to make personal decisions, so what about you . To make personal decisions, so what about you . Claire phoned me on the Easter Monday i think it was. By monday night i was packed and ready to go. Just like that. I have two children, they were very understanding. They are adults. They we re understanding. They are adults. They were willing to help us in any way that they can by bringing us stuff, food, anything we need, to the home. I dont know what your family situation is, claire, but that is a big part of this process. You cant make a unilateral decision, can you . You need to check with family and decide if it is the right thing to do. Yes, of course. I have my partner and my dog at home. They are very much on board. I facetime them, and my dog, every night he was very much understanding about the decision, to be honest. This is what we have to do. It is about protecting our elderly and ijust felt this was the only decision. Claire, tell us about whats the residents make out of the fact they can look out of the window and see your little temporary home at there what are they sad . They have been really supportive and have been getting involved. Some of the residents have wanted a guided tour around the sleeping arrangements. Some of them, they have been ever so kind and been really concerned and worried that we are ok, and they have been really grateful that we have been really grateful that we have moved in. They have been really on board with have moved in. They have been really on boa rd with everything have moved in. They have been really on board with everything i have done, be honest. This is a lovely story and people are full of admiration, but the reality is there are great concerns about the risk to people in care homes and that is the one of the things that has emerged, especially over the last couple of weeks. How has your care can been affected . Weeks. How has your care can been affected . I think the main thing for us is the ppe side of things, really. Ppe has been incredibly difficult to get hold of. We are still having issues about receiving things like gloves and aprons. We have had so much response from the general public that have really come together, they have been so supportive and sending us a little ca re supportive and sending us a little care packages, little parcels, packets of gloves here and there. It has been so amazing. On that specific thing, as you start your day to day, have you got what you need, in terms of ppe . Do you have enough for today and for tomorrow, and the weekend . Enough for today and for tomorrow, and the weekend . Yeah, we do have enough, just. I think if i continued still running on 31 staff i wouldnt have had enough by now, no. That is another reason, taking everything into consideration, going down to nine staff, it certainly makes it a lot easier to spread out the ppe, for sure. If i lot easier to spread out the ppe, forsure. If i had lot easier to spread out the ppe, for sure. If i had 31 staff still operating at victoria house, it would have been incredibly difficult. There would have been no where to get the ppe from. It would have been very challenging right now. Well, look, i am ever so slightly jealous of the now. Well, look, i am ever so slightlyjealous of the beautiful surrounding grn with the blue skies and the Outdoor Camping give a big wave to anyone watching at home, including your dog, claire . Yes, ronnie. Give ronnie a wave, and the rest of the family at home. Thank you so much for everything youre doing. Thank you. Thank you. What a lovely pair people. Birdsong, it looked lovely. That is commitment, isnt it . And doing extremely important work. And it is replicated across so many places in the uk. Those are the people we are clapping for. Those are the people we are clapping for. Last week on breakfast, we watched the incredible captain tom moore complete his challenge to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, raising more than £28 million for the nhs. His determination has motivated people up and down the country to literally follow in his footsteps. Breakfastsjohn maguire has been speaking to some of them. Unlike a mile, a metre or a foot, a step is a personal distance, part of a personaljourney. Captain tom moore has inspired so many to, if you like, follow his footsteps and raise money for an nhs that, in some cases, has saved them. As a 13 year old, Miranda Meldrum spent four months on a ventilator following a stroke and, despite her locked in syndrome, she is now walking 100 laps on a treadmill to raise money for new ventilators. Frank mills, who has spina bifida, set an objective of walking ten metres. Each milestone, or metre stone, is marked in chalk on the pavement. He wanted to raise £99 for Nhs Charities, 99 because that is the age of captain tom, but like the man who inspired him, the six year old has smashed his target and, so far, has hit almost £195,000. There you go. Ten metres well done. Mike biggar played rugby for scotland 40 years ago, making 24 appearances and was a captain of his country. He sustained severe brain injuries in a nearfatal car crash in 1992. Hes had several setbacks since, but retains a great sense of humour and great determination. For mike, its100 steps for Nhs Charities and, so far, almost £25,000. Really, it is almost like payback time, you know . How lucky i am to be here and. I am lucky to be here, and just that. Celebrating the fact that i have been given a new opportunity. The idea is he is going to try 100 steps and raise money for the National Health service to say thank you. Of course, with everything thats going on at the moment, the National HealthService Needs everything it can get. Age is a futile barrier, as we know from captain tom. Young cousins maisie and jack are aiming for 100,000 steps to support their local hospital. Jack is autistic and nonverbal, so wrote out the reason why he wanted to take part. He is a hero to us and he helped the uk to win the war, world war ii. Tell me what you do when you are walking along . When i am walking along, like, when we go into the childrens forest, we go into where the trees are and everything, so it is more fun. So whether it is a foot or a mile, a fiver or a grand, captain toms new army are marching on and saving lives. John maguire, bbc news. The great thing is, inspiration comes from the unlikeliest of places. I know he is a household name now that he was not before we interviewed him. I love it when you see people who are really pushing themselves to do what, on the face of it, are tiny things but are big achievements and all for the right reasons. Absolutely. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Isnt it much easier to present the weather when the sun is shining . It isa weather when the sun is shining . It is a bit. A better sunshine streaming through the windows like we have this morning on tyneside. A bit of sunshine. That is what we have today for the vast majority. Pretty warm out there. This is how warm it was in some parts of the country yesterday, well above 20 degrees folsom. Just to put that into a bit of context, we should seeing temperatures in the mid teams at this stage in april. Mid teens. Another warm day. Low cloud across the eastern counties of england, including on the coast. The same for the north east of scotland. For most fine day in store. Claudia for Northern Ireland today. Where we have blue skies, tempered by high cloud. A bit in a way of hazy sunshine. A sunny day for the vast majority. Temperature is not as yesterday. Enough later on. Parts of wales and South West England to set up wales and South West England to set up an isolated shower or two. Most will stay dry and i will be the case tonight as we go into tomorrow. Isolated frost in some of the areas that foremost another frost free start tomorrow. It may not make a huge amount of difference but we are into the weekend tomorrow. Particularly in the north, it will turn cooler as we go into the weekend with an increasing chance of one or two showers. Not much by way of showers around. More in the way of showers around. More in the way of mist and load cloud around some of mist and load cloud around some of the coast. It should be another warm day for many, temperatures mid to high teens, if not lower 20s. Saturday night and into sunday that a greater chance of a few showers across the north. We will also drag in coolerair across the north. We will also drag in cooler air across the north of the country. On sunday it looks like there will be a few showers here and there. Many places will stay dry on sunday. The chalice will be on the heavy side. Temperatures dropping in scotla nd heavy side. Temperatures dropping in scotland and Northern Ireland, back to ten, 14 degrees. Still hitting highs of 22 degrees. That is the forecast. Hello. This is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. Teachers, social workers and supermarket staff are among the 10 million key workers and theirfamilies in england, who can now book a test to find out whether they have coronavirus. The Health Secretary, matt hancock, made the announcement yesterday, along with plans for up to 90 mobile units run by the army to test people unable to travel to drive through centres. Well be speaking to him in a few moments the us President Donald Trump has said Boris Johnson sounded sharp and energetic when they spoke by telephone on tuesday. The Prime Minister has been recovering from covid 19 at chequers, his country retreat, since leaving hospital twelve days ago. Downing street has not said when he will be returning to work. At last nights white house briefing, mr trump said the Prime Minister was doing great. I wont tell you he sounded incredible. I was actually surprised. I thought it would be like, oh, donald, how are you . He was ready to go. I am very surprised to tell you this. It was like the old boris, Tremendous Energy and tremendous drive. I was very surprised. He called me when he got out of hospital and i think he is doing great. Lets speak to the Health Secretary, matt hancock. Thank you for your time this morning. We had been going along with the announcement made yesterday that essential workers and their families will be able to be tested and online test for key workers if anyone in the households are showing symptoms. How will this contribute to your targeted testing 100,000 people a day by the end of the month . The most important thing that matters is now it will be much easier as of this morning for essential workers or people in their households to be able to get a test. If you have symptoms and you are an essential worker, basically the same group of people who can send their kids to school, or if you are in a household with somebody who is having to self isolate because you have got the symptoms, they can be able to go online, book a test, a bit like booking a flight. That will make it much easier because we have had this ramp up incapacity to test in advance of the 100,000 target at the end of next week. Currently, just over 50,000 tests available but not as many people have been coming forward as we expected. That was a problem but it was a good problem to have because it means we have been able to expand you can get a test faster than we planned to and brought on this system, this it system this morning, said that if you are an essential worker you can get a test. It is all part of getting people back to work, getting britain back on its feet. We have been asking viewers if anyone has tried out their website. I tried this morning to see if it was working. It was up and running. Jackie registered an hour ago and said a text with a ride few moments but still nothing. Sally, who works ina but still nothing. Sally, who works in a school, has symptoms, went on the website and put to test for lunch time today. She could not falter apart from the fact she needs a two and a half hour trip to the test centre. Someone, an essential worker, books test today and get a text back, has the test at lunchtime today, when did she get a result and what proves whether she has it or not and can go back to work . The majority will get the result within 24 hours. For some it will take longer but the majority within 24 hours. 0n the point about the big round trip, we are also producing home test which can be delivered to your home, you do the test at home and a courier comes to pick it up. That will start in small numbers but that service will grow and i think that service will grow and i think that will be a Popular Service as it increasingly becomes available. And then you will have the result and then you will have the result and the result will also go on to your medical record, so that your doctor knows what the result of the test has been. Just to go back to what you mentioned about capacity, i want to be really clear about the difference between capacity, more than 50,000, the ability to be able to test and the fact that when you are on this programme a couple of weeks ago, you and i had a conversation, you set a 100,000 gold, target, for people who would be tested for tests to have been done. They are two very different things. Absolutely, yes. Even though you have the capacity, how can you guarantee you will reach 100,000 tests a day by this time next week by the end of the month . You cannot guarantee anything. It was a target, important enough for you to set. Exactly. They are going up by about 10,000 a day, which brings it ahead of schedule to reach that goal. As i was saying before, fewer people have been coming forward for a test than we expected and that is why we have been able to expand the availability to all essential workers and just make it so much easierfor them to be able to get a test. When you say. Sorry. When you say fewer people are coming forward for a test, why is it we are hearing about ca re test, why is it we are hearing about care home workers, nhs front line workers, who are saying they had not been tested . Their workers, who are saying they had not been tested . Their families workers, who are saying they had not been tested . Theirfamilies have not been tested . Theirfamilies have not been tested. You say they are not coming forward but there is a massive demand for people to be tested. They can get on with their jobs and keep the country going, front line workers. Exactly. The new booking system today is precisely so it is much easier. Previously you had to go through your employer because we did not have this it system in place. All of this is being built as we go. The it for this system be launched today only got finished yesterday. This is very rapid work by an Amazing Group of people in nhs digital and they had pulled this together in record time. Precisely to address the concern you pointed out. You are quite right. You had to go through your employer, your employer had to apply and now people can just go online. Your employer can still apply for you if thatis employer can still apply for you if that is the best route for you but otherwise it can go online and book a test. Essentially they had to take into their own hands. Not necessarily, an employer can book it for you but it is so much easier to just go online and book that test. Lets talk about comments from Nicola Sturgeon. She has spoken about tests scotla nd sturgeon. She has spoken about tests scotland will take in order to ease lockdown measures. You have responded to that, first question he responded to that, first question he responded to that, first question he responded to yesterday, saying certain criteria need to be met. What is the harm in laying out a plan for the exit from lockdown . Certain retailers may be allowed to reopen, schools reopen. Just to let the British Public know. A quote from iain duncan smith, we must trust the British Public to understand how it will happen, the Scottish Administration is right and i want the uk government to do the same. Just to pick up on the question and to correct something from Nicola Sturgeon has not set out what the Scottish Government will do. She has set out tests they will follow, which are essentially consistent with what we set out over a week ago now in terms of their test that need to be met before changes can be made. I welcome the fa ct changes can be made. I welcome the fact this is essentially being done ona uk fact this is essentially being done on a uk wide approach. We had set out the tests that need to be met before we can make changes and the traces it is too early to make changes to social distancing rules safely because the death rate is still too high and are too many new places. We do not want to throw away the good work the public has done in the good work the public has done in the curve because it is clear we are at the peak and it has flattened. We do not want to throw that away and had to see a second peak. We set out the principles. I am glad the Scottish Government is following very broadly those principles and, of course, we will set out more details when it is appropriate to do so but it is too soon to make changes to the social distancing rules now. Is the first minister has published a 26 page framework for rio being schools and allowing small gatherings. Reopening. I get asked this question all the time. The truth is the British Public have been remarkable in their resilience and their support for the measures that we had to take. People understand why we had to take them, not decisions that any minister would want to take, but we have had to ta ke would want to take, but we have had to take them. People have stuck by the rules. They are doing a sterling job in following the social distancing rules. That has been very successful in flattening the curve, which means we are seeing increases and increases not seeing the increases in the number of cases that we were. The nhs has not been overwhelmed, that was my first objective. I dont want to throw away all of that could work before we are ready. Can i ask about care home death numbers from covid 19. Can you explain why scotland can include the care home deaths in relation to coronavirus, but the cqc, Public Health england, cant, because we dont have accurate numbers at the moment . No, i dont think that is the case. The care home numbers arent included in the daily death rates. They are published. The cqc has increased the data that is available by publishing those who die who are resident in ca re those who die who are resident in care homes, whether they die in hospital or at home. We are co nsta ntly hospital or at home. We are constantly seeking to improve the way this sort of data is published. Matt hancock, Health Secretary, thank you very much for talking to us again this morning. Just after eight oclock we will be speaking to Nicola Sturgeon. She has outlined some of the proposals, the principles around which the locked and could change in the future. Brides and grooms are having to rearrange and rebook plans for their big day as lockdown means weddings are on hold. Some couples say theyre also being asked to pay to postpone their big day, while others are facing thousands of pounds in cancellation fees. Heres our Consumer Affairs correspondent sarah corker. Its just been such a horrible focus, throughout whats already a very difficult period, to have this at the back of our minds the whole time. Are we going to get our money back . When is the wedding going to be . Are we even going to get a wedding . Its just been horrible. Jack and claudias dream wedding injune cant go ahead because of coronavirus restrictions. Theyve already paid more than £20,000, but they say the venue is trying to charge them an 80 cancellation fee. We are really, really sad that our wedding is being cancelled but now we are more angry than upset by thinking how can this company expect to be paid for something that they have not done . Theyd booked this country mansion in surrey with the bijou Wedding Group for a friday. They have now been offered alternative dates, but no financial compensation for the difference in price. 0ne wedding planner told us she is advising 250 brides and grooms locked in disputes with their venues. I have around 15 venues that are acting really appallingly at the moment. Theyre making up these rules, quite honestly, as they go along. The government havnt given us any guidelines on what is right and what is wrong. Jenny and michael, from the midlands, had their special day moved from a sunday in may to a wednesday in september. We booked a package for 75 people. So it has gone from 75 to 60 guests, down to 12 at best. Jenny says there were no weekends available, so she is now trying to get the hotel, abels harp in shropshire, to give her a full refund. Theyve backed us into a corner, left us. Took it out of our control. And we just feel really angry and also heartbroken. We asked the hotel for their side of the story, but they didnt respond. The vast majority of venues have been flexible with dates, but the entire industry, from caterers to florists to photographers, has been hit hard by this pandemic. The reality is some may not survive this huge drop in income at a key time of year. Jack and claudia say theyre left in limbo. The problem is that they have all our money so we cant really book anywhere else until we get a refund. Bijou weddings have told us while many businesses are struggling during this difficult time, couples say they shouldnt be left out of pocket for a Service Venues cant deliver. Sarah caulker, bbc news. A little love for retail when it comes to sales at the moment, because they have taken a real slump. Not all retailers are doing badly. We have had the latest official update on what retail sales did last month. Unsurprisingly, they fell pretty sharply. The biggest monthly fall on record. There really are winners and losers in all of this. Clothing sales were down by 34. 8 , because most of that is really done on the high street. Fuel, because we are not travelling anywhere, so sales of fuel fell. Third did well, by 10 , because we are staying at home more, may be eating more, and the kids are raiding the fridge a bit more. All of those sales were up. 0nline is also doing particularly well, of all the things that we bought over the last month, 22 of those sales were done online, so showing how little we are able to get out and we rely on the internet to deliver things. While it is important. For the economy, the Retail Sector makes up a huge proportion of the Service Sector, Services Accounting for three quarters of our entire economy, and thousands upon thousands ofjobs. 0ne thousands upon thousands ofjobs. One thing in the figures that is interesting, alcohol sales were up by 32 last month, so maybe that is one of the ways we are helping ourselves get through this. Booze sales by up more than a third during march. We should expect that the retail figures should be much worse. My figures should be much worse. My red wine consumption was not included in those figures we have had loads of comments on a story we have been covering this morning. When people are going shopping, people are saying it seems like they are spending more money, like it is costing more in the supermarkets, the prices have gone up, less offers on the 342 kind of offers. Lots of people are getting in touch with us and saying it in their shopping. We will talk about lots of different supermarkets. He is saying there are no offers and says preece in sainsburys. Diana says herfood shop has gone up so much and there are still items you can get. This is saying the shop and will be about 30 more expensive. People are feeling like there are spending more money. Because of all of those e mails and lots of people getting in touch, and thank you for all those messages, you have really been noticing this. With budgets squeezed right now, you might have no income at all, struggling to keep the business afloat, so you do rely on those offers. The supermarkets have been telling us, initially they got rid of those offers because they wanted to discourage panic buying or buying more than we needed, remember the empty shelves at the time . They said they would get rid of those. There is also a logistical thing. Maintaining those offers in supermarkets is quite hard for the staff because they have to keep the shelves full because we are buying more because of those offers. They said they got rid of them initially. A lot of the supermarkets we spoke to said they will slowly reintroduce them, but in the meantime it is really difficult. All of the people getting in touch this morning saying they are having to pay more in their wee kly they are having to pay more in their weekly shop because those offers have disappeared. The research we had done looked at only online websites for its supermarkets. There we re 25 websites for its supermarkets. There were 25 fewer offers on those websites for online sales. If you are still able to get out to a supermarket, he might have to queue, but you do have the option of shopping around a few different places. If you are vulnerable and can get out, you are reliant on the supermarket websites and those, it seems, where the offers have disappeared. Getting in touch. Kirsten said the supermarkets are making more profit than normal. Ryan saying that the prices have significantly increased. That does filter back into the retail figures i was talking about the beginning because food sales is one of the few winners right now on the high street, up by 10 , winners right now on the high street, up by10 , because winners right now on the high street, up by 10 , because we are at home more, not eating out. Supermarkets are doing particularly well. They say, in their defence, it was to stop us panic buying and they will slowly start to reintroduce them. The offers are always welcome, thank you, ben. Heres matt with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Guess what . Another day of sunshine for many. We saw temperatures widely into the 20s across the uk, but it has been chilly by night. You can see the frost on the grass behind me in aberdeenshire. There is a little bit of low cloud in a few spots compared to yesterday. The north east of scotland, down into eastern counties of england, that will gradually fade away. A bit more cloud for Northern Ireland today compared to yesterday. Some high cloud in the skies above us in places, so the sunshine may be a bit more hasty at times, but really, it is as you wear. The coolest on the eastern coast. Widely into the 20s in southern and western parts of the uk. There is the small chance of some isolated showers in wales and South West England in particular. They will start to fade away and most places will be dry again tonight. Some mist and fog patches in northern and eastern areas taking us into saturday. There will be a bit of frost and some gardens in the north of the uk, particularly for scotland in the far north of england. Into the weekend, cooler across the north. An increase in chance of some showers, not really on saturday. If we do see a shower it will be one isolated once and the south west. A greater chance of mist and fog along the east coast in the morning, one or two of those could linger into the afternoon. Temperatures drop and a little bit, only by a degree or two, going into saturday afternoon compared to what we have at the moment. The biggest drop will be in the north of scotland, between 9 12d here. The cooler air will push its way in through saturday night into sunday. A greater chance of two showers developing. Winds will come down from the north and north west for many, so for scotland and Northern Ireland, cooler date than what we have had, but still pleasant enough when the sun is out. A greater chance of heavy showers in the north of scotland. In england and wales, more chance of a shower picking up here and there. If your garden is in desperate need of a drink of water at the moment, i cant guarantee two showers will hit your garden in particular because two showers will be quite well spread and many garden full stay dry going into sunday. A temperature contrast as we finish the weekend with temperatures hitting 23 celsius in the south west corner, and it should only be around 15 degrees at this time of year, but it will be much colder in Northern Ireland and scotland with temperatures in the mid teens. Next week, temperatures will return to what we would expect at this time of year. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. 0ur headlines today millions of key workers and theirfamilies in england can now book a test to see if they have coronavirus. There have been fewer people coming forward for a test than wed expected and thats why weve been able to expand the availability to all essential workers and just make it so much easier for them to be able to get a test. Scotlands first minister Nicola Sturgeon calls for a grown up conversation over when to relax social distancing. A month since the uk went into lockdown, the country once again shows its appreciation for our health workers. The bbcs big night in raises more than £27 million for those affected by the pandemic, and saw the return of some much loved comedy characters. A holiday somewhere hot . Keyboard keys clack. Computer says no. Not on offer im looking at why supermarkets have slashed the number of promotions and special offers during the lockdown, and how it means some shoppers are struggling to make ends meet. Its friday 24th april. Our top story. In the last few minutes, Health Secretary matt hancock has told breakfast, it is too early to make any changes to social distancing measures which could risk a second peak of the coronavirus, despite scotlands first minister outlining her plans for coming out of lockdown. From today, ten million essential workers and their families in england, will be able to book a test to find out whether they have the coronavirus. Were joined now from westminster by our political correspondent, leila nathoo. Later, good morning. We spoke to matt hancock. Lots to talk to him about. Why did you pick up from him . Interesting that he was saying it was a good thing that there was not enough people coming forward for testing, coronavirus testing, because it meant that capacity was able to be increased. 0f because it meant that capacity was able to be increased. Of course he mentioned that now all key workers can apply themselves or via their employer online for those coronavirus test if they themselves have symptoms or any family members do. Clear that he is trying to get people back to work if they can also, an interesting point he was asked about. Nicola sturgeons decision to set out the thought processes if you like, the thinking that was going to guide her in the future of a releasing lockdown measures. The government here in westminster is under pressure on that. Several tory mps also saying we need to have a conversation with people to give people some hope of what kinds of things are in the pipeline for when the government comes to easing the lockdown restrictions. Matt hancock was asked about it Nicola Sturgeons comments. Nicola sturgeon has not set out what the Scottish Government will do. She set out the tests they will follow, which are essentially consistent with what we set out over a week ago now. In terms of the tests that need to be met before changes can be made. I welcome the fact that is essentially being done on a uk wide approach. We said outer tests that need to be met before we can make changes, and the truth is it is too early to make changes to the social distancing laws safely, because the death rate is still too high and there are still too many new cases. We dont want to throw away a lot of the really good work the public have done flattening the curve, because it is now clear we are at the peak and it has flattened. But we dont wa nt to and it has flattened. But we dont want to throw that away and see a second peak. So we set out the principles. Im glad the Scottish Government are following very broadly those principles. And of course we will set out more details when its appropriate to do so. But it is too soon to make changes to the social distancing laws now. Clearly matt hancock reinforcing the government message that they dont wa nt government message that they dont want to deviate from the key advice to people which is to stick to the social distancing rules. They do not wa nt social distancing rules. They do not want to be drawn on what could happen ina want to be drawn on what could happen in a couple of weeks time. There are three week periods. Every three weeks written into law, the lockdown restrictions need to be reviewed. We are about a fortnight away from the next review. But i think there are signs of some pressure on the government to reveal their thinking a little bit more beyond those five tests, now that we have Nicola Sturgeon. We are going to hear more from the White Administration too. We are probably, head of the next review of the lockdown, going to hear some information from the government about what is going to guide them in lifting those restrictions. Thank you very much. Leila nathoo. We will be talking to Nicola Sturgeon in about five minutes. Us President Donald Trump has said Boris Johnson sounded sharp and energetic when they spoke by telephone on tuesday. Wales is tightening some lockdown restrictions, including people using second homes and exercising outside of their local area. Wales first minister, mark drakeford, will unveil seven key questions which will be considered before any easing of restrictions can be made, such as whether they bring a low risk of infection, or any economic benefit. He is not expected to give a date for when the changes could start. The captain of a Royal Navy Submarine has been sent home on leave, after allowing his crew to hold a dockside barbecue and party during the lockdown. And the cast of eastenders took part in a queen vic virtual pub quiz. The money raised will go towards helping people in need during the current crisis. And its notjust celebrities doing their bit, peter kay recreated his famous amarillo video with clips sent in by key workers and members of the public from around the uk. Lizo mzimba, bbc news. Lots of fun had by all and money raised. We have been asking about how the uk. 5. 5 Million People in scotla nd how the uk. 5. 5 Million People in scotland have been given a rough idea of what it might look like when lockdown is lifted. First minister it Nicola Sturgeonjoins lockdown is lifted. First minister it Nicola Sturgeon joins us lockdown is lifted. First minister it Nicola Sturgeonjoins us now. Good morning. Thank you for your time. A new phrase has entered politician speak. Probably one a lot of people have been using anecdotally in conversations, the new normal. When a politician says that, it takes on a different significance. Can you describe what the new normal will be in your vision . Not in detail. What ive tried to do in a grown up conversation with people is started to share some of the thinking that will take us into that position. There are two important points to stress. 0ne there are two important points to stress. One is it is too early now to lift any of the lockdown restrictions. They are working, they are suppressing the virus. But we need to stick with it to ensure we drive it down to as low a level as possible. Secondly, and this gets me onto the new normal, when we are able to lift some of these restrictions it would be baby steps. We will have to be very careful, very cautious, assess what we are doing. The virus wont have gone away. The bigger risk is we could come out of lockdown and it runs rampant again. We are likely, even as we started to lift some of the more restrictive measures as we wanted to do, because they have consequences of their own, we are likely to have to live with social distancing and some restrictions on how we live our lives for quite some time to come. This is difficulty difficult. Judgments are going to be very finely balanced. I think its important to include the wider public in those thought processes and in the way we make those decisions. It will affect all of our lives potentially for quite a long time to come. That is what the Scottish Government are set out to do yesterday, to start the conversation. In the weeks to come we will seek to turn it from that high level strategic document into a more detailed plan with milestones and measurement and metrics attached. I have given an assurance that we will share as much of the detail of that as we possibly can you talk about baby steps. To a degree you have gone possibly further than other devolved governments have, talking about specifics. Schools, for example. How does the new normal and these baby steps you are talking about, what is the vision you would have to schools in scotland . The vision you would have to schools in scotland . Well, i use schools to kind of illustrate some of the changes we might have to learn to live with. Let me preface this by saying im not suggesting we reopen schools right now. I said i cant guarantee that schools in scotland will open before the summer break, which is slightly earlier than england. 0f which is slightly earlier than england. Of course we want to get kids back to school as soon as possible. The one thing i was trying to get people to understand yesterday is that lifting the lockdown, this is not Something Like flicking a switch. It is not a case of schools will be closed one day and open as normal the next day. Social distancing will continue to be important. It might be we continue to have classrooms with fewer children in them so we can keep children two metres apart. This is not a decision but an illustration of the kind of things we have to think about. Will it be the case that classes might have to be divided into two . One half one week, one half of the other week. 0ne week, one half of the other week. One in the morning, when in the afternoon. These are not firm decisions. These are the kind of different ways of living our lives that we are going to have to think through and potentially get used to for some time to come. Can ijust ask you, first minister, if i may come on the issue of schools, in a way it is a four example. Would you be prepared given where your thinking is on that, separated out from date specific, would you be prepared to unilaterally, as in scotla nd ta ke prepared to unilaterally, as in scotland take the decision themselves in a different timescale from the rest of the uk, to open schools based on some of the criteria you have talked about . Is that a decision you will take . And if thats what you think is the right thing to do, when the time comes, you will do that . If i think it is the right thing to do and there is a good basis and reason for that. These decisions fall to us. Let me be very clear about this. I dont, this from any political or constitutional perspective. I want to do what is best to suppress this virus well, as far as we can, allowing some semblance of normality to come back into our lives. I dont start from the premise of, we must do everything at the same time across the uk. Nor do i start from the premise we have got to do things differently in scotland. My decisions will be driven by what is best to tackle this virus and reduce its harm. We are working well on a four nations uk bases. The virus doesnt respect the border between scotland and england, or england and wales. We must align our decision as much as possible. But where it makes sense and there are good reasons that micro we announced the closure of scotlands schools slightly ahead of scotlands schools slightly ahead of the uk. These are the kind of decisions we have to take. But for good reason, not driven by political considerations. That is not on given the nature of what we are dealing with. We spoke to matt hancock a few moments ago. Im not sure if you heard of the interview. We asked about what you said yesterday, your proposals that you lead dead in front of the scottish people. You have said you want to be open with the people. His response was that Nicola Sturgeon, he nameyou specifically, had not set out what the Scottish Government will do. Is that at odds with what you thought you had done . I didnt hear matt hancock, so im not going to. Let me help you. His quote was, Nicola Sturgeon did not set out what the Scottish Government will do. M sturgeon did not set out what the Scottish Government will do. If he meant i didnt set out, here is what restrictions we were left on what date, he is right, i didnt. I didnt say i was going to do that yesterday. The document is called a framework for Decision Making, to try to set out to people some of the factors we have to take into account over the next period, how we will seek to do that, the different issues we have to balance. What i am trying to say to people is this is really difficult. I dont have all the answers. Nobody does. This is unprecedented. There is no certainty. We have tried to inform decisions with the best scientific advice. But the science is not exact. There are some difficult carefuljudgments exact. There are some difficult careful judgments that have exact. There are some difficult carefuljudgments that have to be made. We are talking about the changes to our way of life for some considerable time. As a politician i think it is right to try to open the discussion up. Of course my responsibility as first minister of scotland is to shoulder the burden of the decisions, but this is about all of us, and therefore a grown up conversation with the public, i think, is really appropriate. I didnt set out specifics yesterday because i was not able to do that. It is essential to stick with the lockdown now. We think it is working. All of the evidence suggests that the virus is being suppressed. But we dont have the confidence you had to say its a sufficiently suppressed in order to start lifting these. When we do it will be a difficultjudgment. Baby steps. It is important every step of the way we are sharing that, reassuringly thinking, we are sharing the evidence and Decision Making process with the public. That is what i will continue to try to do. I would expect governments elsewhere across the uk and globally would do that too. The welsh first ministerare would do that too. The welsh first minister are setting out some similar thinking today. I suspect the uk government will as well. And of the specific area i know you looked at comes under the title of port health, which is about the places, at a future date, where people are coming into the uk. 0bviously your interest specific to scotland. You have real concerns about when people are coming into the country, and airport, airport, what will be the restrictions around that . Yeah, this is largely irresponsibility of the uk come in but i am making clear that this is a discussion i believe we have to have. If you think about when we go into the next phase of this and we can talk about the importance of containing the virus using test, trace and isolate to keep it at the lower level that hopefully we would have got it too, in that context if we are around trying to get people with symptoms, test them, trace them, isolate anybody who is symptomatic, not to have a similar Surveillance System for people coming into the country would be an achilles heel. So it strikes me that that is an essential part of this next phase that we going to and i was flagging up yesterday that thatis i was flagging up yesterday that that is a discussion i think we will wa nt that is a discussion i think we will want to have on that four nations basis across the uk. Nicola sturgeon, first minister of sludden, thank you very much for your time. For those who recover from coronavirus, sharing their experience is all part of the healing process, and weve been trying to bring you some of their positive stories here on breakfast. Jane dudley was given a rousing send off as she left the royal stoke hospital last week, after what her family descibed as a miracle recovery from the virus. Jane also has stage four tongue cancer, and already has a tube inserted in her neck to help her breathe. Shejoins us now alongside her daughter, rachel berry, as well as by associate chief nurse, gail meers, who looked after jane during her time in hospital. Welcome to you all. Jane, i know its difficult for you. Thank you for the way. I know its difficult for the way. I know its difficult for you to speak. Rachel will help out a lot. I will start with you and ask, how are you . How pleased are you to be home . Im very happy. She said shes very happy. And rachel, it must be a relief for you as well do have mum back . Oh, definitely. Ive seen her every day of my life. Do not see her for the whole month, that was awful for me because we are best friends. We are going to twiddle with the sound on your connection and we will talk to gail as well. Gail, you are the nurse in charge of the ward jane was on. Tell us about jane . We saw that lovely round of applause when she left. It is inevitable that patients touch your heart . Absolutely. Jane was on one of my respiratory wards. A Regional Centre for who have difficulties and an approved Motor Neurone Disease centre. Jane was an absolute privilege to look after. All the nurses absolutely adored her. 0ur consultants absolutely adored her. I dont think we to go home because she has become such a pa rt of home because she has become such a part of our life. It was devastating for her to go home. I think the nurses would all like to say thank you to her for being such a great patient. Now im not sure whether rachel can hear what gail is saying, but there is a lot of gratitude going around at the moment and it is going around at the moment and it is going both ways. What you make of what is saying . It is a hugely emotionaljourney what is saying . It is a hugely emotional journey youve what is saying . It is a hugely emotionaljourney youve been on . Inaudible. Rachel, you are going to have to translate for us it is a bit difficult with the mask. She said all the hospital staff were absolutely amazing, so caring. And that they had a lot of fun also. That is lovely to hear. There may be people listening to this thinking, really . They are having fun . How does that work . I think we are extremely privileged. We get to go to work every single day and do something we absolutely love. We spend time with our work family. I do not underestimate how difficult this is for so many people staying at home, staying safe, you have had to change their lifestyles and the way they may be work right now. We are lucky, we get to go to work. Morale takes us through. So having fun, yeah and thank you to everybody for their support. Gail, you will be too modest, i dont know you will be too modest, i dont know you but you are very modest and understated, but you will have no idea of the number of people who feel like me watching you going thank you, saying thank you to your patients, just agog we are all saying thank you to you. Rachel, there is always more to what you see. Jane is obviously so determined and so lively that she has touched the hearts of those who were caring for her when she needed them absolutely. But i think it runs in the family. Because rachel, i dont think it would be fair for you to tell us not to tell us what you are experiencing is a family of the minute . I know your great uncle passed away, your grandad is ill as well. Tell us what is happening with the family . Yeah. Its a very emotional time for the family at the moment. My mum has recovered. But then my grandad and my great uncle, thats the other side. They have got underlying problems also. They got dementia. But for mummy to come through this. She has been so determined. So strong. Im so proud of her. Its lovely to hear those things. Gail, a last thought with you. The trap for carers, which is happening every week now, everyone is thinking the same thing. Clap for carers. It feels like a really important pa rt it feels like a really important part of everyones weeks now. Where we re part of everyones weeks now. Where were you last night at eight oclock . I actually pulled into my drive at eight oclock, just in time what is it like seeing people coming out of those moments . Its absolutely overwhelming and humbling. Ithink absolutely overwhelming and humbling. I think every single key worker will tell you how emotional it makes us. Its nice to see everybody as well. Its almost like a roll call to make sure everybody is an opportunity to make sure that the neighbours are ok as well. So thank you. A lot of thank you is going on this morning between all of you guys lovely to see you this morning. Good luck with your day. Im sure it will be another challenging day. But as you say, its all about how you approach things. To jane and rachel, our communication has been a little tricky this morning but we can still waver. You can give us a fierce wave. We wish you and your family all the best in the coming weeks and months. Good look to you. Good luck. A patient being thanked by the carer. Unbelievable. It is great. It is time to talk to matter. You have had some very time to talk to matter. You have had some very nice backgrounds. You have got some really nice gardens, havent you . I know, weather watchers are quite blessed. Look at this one. Derbyshire. Blue skies overhead. Many a garden is looking reasonably good at the moment. They could do with a drop of rain. Not a huge amount to come in the next few days. But we will see one or two showers. Sunshine for many today. Another 11. In eastern areas we have missed my grand low cloud keeping the temperatures down. In the sunshine yesterday temperatures widely into the low 20s if not close to mid 20s in parts of sussex. Put that in a bit of context. Just to show you how much warmer then we are as normal. About 10 degrees and one or two spots. We will get closer to the second temperatures as we head into next week. Some eastern coasts will be closer to that today. A bit of mist, low cloud and fog through Eastern England will shift in the next hour. Sony for the afternoon. Some low cloud through the north sea, which could get close to coast. Cloudy for Northern Ireland compared to recent days. Some high cloud means the sunshine is hazy. For most another sunny and warm day. Away from eastern coast, temperatures widely into the 20s, even if they are down a degree or two. Late in the day we could see some isolated sharp showers across South West England and wales. Very few. Most will stay dry. Mist and fog becomes more of an issue through northern and eastern scotland. A murky start to your weekend. Some gardens in scotla nd to your weekend. Some gardens in scotland and Northern England may get a touch of frost. But the general story for the weekend is it will slowly turn cooler. Maybe across Northern Areas. Here is where there are the greatest the greatest chance of showers. Mostly, gray and murky start down eastern parts of england and eastern scotland. Most of that will clear back from the coast. Sunshine in the afternoon. Temperatures still dropping, it will be warm enough in the sunshine with temperatures in the sunshine with temperatures in the mid to late teens. We finish the day with showers. That risk continues into sunday. At the same time this low pressure system, a very weak, feeble affair putting into the north, we could see some more rain. And with it that colder air pushes its way to scotland and Northern Ireland. A few showers in scotla nd Northern Ireland. A few showers in scotland and Northern Ireland on sunday. 0ne scotland and Northern Ireland on sunday. One or two for england and wales. I cant guarantee your garden will get a drink of water. Turning colder in the north. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and naga munchetty. It is 8 30am. Its now time for our hero half hour, we have done it once or twice because it works this is where we say thank you to the nhs workers, posties, bin collectors, supermarket staff and teachers and train operators keeping the country running during the Coronavirus Crisis. And last night, for the fifth week running, millions of people around the uk took to their front doors, windows and gardens. Didnt even have to step outdoors, maybe you are doing it on your sofa in the privacy of your own home. Breakfasts tim muffett has been speaking to one family with a very personal reason tojoin in the applause. Applause. The sound of clapping. To bimian, it is the sound of survival. It is emotional to me, yeah. That is amazing day to me. Biniam had been in intensive care for 12 days with covid 19 and pneumonia. He was placed on a ventilator and into an induced coma. I thought i would died, i never thought id come back. I thought i would be dying, im done. Only thing is i did not say goodbye to my kids. It was very hard. Of course, i became emotional. The doctor told me it was very bad. It was the darkest time in my life. We know the nhs staff, they have been going the extra mile to save his life. Beniam became the first person to leave darent valley hospital, in kent, having recovered from covid 19. A very exhilarating feeling for the whole team because he was the first patient who came out of icu. The excitement was gradually building up to the kind of climax of seeing him walking out, back to his loved ones and his family. Its quite a good feeling. I dont know how it even worked to save these people. They are amazing people. Honestly, they treat you like a mum, like a dad, like a brother. You dont believe it how they treat people. It is eight oclock. Applause. Although the weekly round of applause has become a communal event, for some it feels incredibly personal. And with good reason. Someone, if they save your life, that is the biggest thing. So these people, they deserve more than. If i could do anything. So i was just saying thank you to them. They helped my dad a lot when he needed it, so we really appreciate the nhs. How does this feel . It must be very personal for you . Yes, it is. They deserve more than this. So it is personal, to be honest. And thank you so much. You are going to make me emotional. The nhs applauded beniam when he left hospital, now a chance for him to applaud them back. A chance he so nearly never had. And im delighted to say were joined now by biniam, his wife mehret and the doctor who cared for him, jonathan kwan. A very good morning to you both, we saw you enthusiastically clapping at that moment, eight oclock last night, how is that for you . It was a special moment, wasnt it . Yes, it isa special moment, wasnt it . Yes, it is a special day. You as a family have been through quite some ordeal. You have recovered now from coronavirus, which is fantastic. Would you just talk us through a little bit of the sequence of events . Little bit of the sequence of events . Yeah, its amazing to have that chance, you know, ifeel like im a very lucky person. To come back from all my sickness to my home, thats an amazing thing for me. Biniam, you fell ill and went into hospital and then you were put into hospital and then you were put into an induced coma. This must have been so alarming for your family . Yes, it is. Mehret, how are you coping while biniam was in hospital . 0bviously, these symptoms came on, you got him treated all seemed to and then. . You got him treated all seemed to and then. . Yeah, you got him treated all seemed to and then. . Yeah, when i noticed he had symptoms, we put him a bit isolated from all of us because we have Court Children at home. So, he had been with us per four days but after that, when the symptoms were getting quite bad, i took him to the hospital. So, yeah, after that it was very hard for me. I dont know how i was coping. When i was thinking about it, it was very hard, but, yeah. What were you told, mehret, about how biniam would do . If you are induced into a coma for 12 days, that is when most families are told, look, there is no guarantee here. What did the staff say to you . They took him to the intensive care, they told me, the doctor called me and said this is very, very sick. My body started shaking like a leaf. I was really shaking. I was very shaky and i couldnt say anything. I couldnt say anything. I just couldnt say anything. I couldnt say anything. Ijust picked up the phone and said to one of my friends, please, lets pray, lets pray. I was blind, i couldnt see any words. Amazing. Ithink was blind, i couldnt see any words. Amazing. I think so many people can relate to the fear and concern families will have when their loved ones are ill. Its interesting you are talking about the treatment, we can speak to the doctor who organised the clap, the lovely cla p doctor who organised the clap, the lovely clap for biniam when he left hospital. What made you do that . Are you addressing to me . |j hospital. What made you do that . Are you addressing to me . I am, yes. Gray im sorry, i cant see the screen. We can see very gray im sorry, i cant see the screen. We can see very well, be assured of that. I as i said to tim yesterday, seeing him walking out is a combination of a very long marathon effort to get him fighting fit to walk out of hospital. 0ne needs to understand, behind every success, there is a team in excess of 60 people, the nurses, doctors, various others, our health care professionals, to get him out. So, really, because he was the first one to leave the hospital, so he was worthy of some congratulation. Its also important, like most key health workers, we are emotional people, too. Its the emotion that drives us too. Its the emotion that drives us to do what we do every day. I think its important to acknowledge that and to give them some sort of a forum to release of their emotion by clapping. Seeing those images there, im reading you thought it was important that the patient in this case could see the faces of the people whod been helping him, that they were real people, not people behind masks out of necessity during the treatment. Use, let them see the real people . That correct, too. Early on in our dealing with this disease we dont wear masks on, parts of the hospital so its quite easy for him to see many of those people involved in his care. Well, im very pleased it ended well in the circumstances. Doctor, thank you very much. Mehret and biniam, the circumstances. Doctor, thank you very much. Mehretand biniam, im very much. Mehretand biniam, im very pleased for you and your family. Youve been through an emotional roller coaster and im very pleased to our home and on the mend. Thank you for your time this morning. Thank you. Thank you very much. Good to see a recovery. Weve been inviting you to send in your messages of thanks to your own personal heroes, who are helping to keep the country ticking over. Lets take a look at some of them. This is a message to captain tom moore. Youve inspired the nation and myself, so im going to take on a 100 mile bouncing a tennis ball challenge. Thank you, tom, for raising money for a great cause. Youre an inspiration, youre hero. Right, 94 miles to go and off we go. We would like to say a really big thank you to. Alison. From Living Paintings because. Shes an amazing hero. Shes sending out these Living Paintings books to every family that needs one by herself, which we think is amazing. We love these books, we order them all the time. Theyve got braille in and raised images and tayen listens to the audio cd on her cd player and at a time like this, they are just perfect, so thank you, alison we love you you are awesome my name is samreen chowdhury and i would like to say a big thank you to my amazing daughter, farah, who is cycling to Charing Cross hospital and she supporting the nhs. Good on you, farah, well done my nanny and grandad live quite far away, so my mummys friends claire and tom did all their shopping for them. Wed like to say a big thank you 0ur amazing vets and veterinary nurses and receptionists are working really, really hard to take care of our animals during this time. Sadly, yesterday we had to say goodbye to our beloved seven year old guinea pig, squeakers. And the professional way in which it was dealt with was second to none. So, to the vet bridget and the veterinary nurse especially, at Companion Care vets in southampton, i just want to say thank you. Clapping. Rupert is the child, im assuming. Good clapping really good clapping for a little on. Lots of blankets, and said prison workers, mention them. His wife has to go into work, good luck. 8 41. From the vicar of dibley, to Little Britain and blackadder the big night in was packed full of sitcom revivals as well as performances from foo fighters, sam smith and celeste, to name just a few. The show celebrated key workers and saw children in need and comic relief join forces for the first time. More than £27 million was raised in three hours to help the vulnerable during the pandemic. Lets take a look at some of the highlights. As you probably know. We have all been. At one time or another. The doctor. Wash your hands and stay indoors. Like a baked potato. 0nly visit grocery stores. Like a baked potato. So lets get physical. Now, some people would do a little bit more exercise than that but i frankly cant be bothered now, andy, ive just been to the supermarket for you, only took 11 hours and ive got all your favourites for your tea its times like these you learn to live again. This is your 62nd warning. All right, thank so much, ill go and get the family together. Clapping. Is this the way to amarillo . Every night ive been hugging my pillow. Dreaming dreams of amarillo. And sweet marie who waits for me. Sha la la la la la la la sha la la la la la la la if that doesnt get you going, nothing will were now joined by the co founder of comic relief, Richard Curtis and the chair of children in need, rosie millard. Good morning to you both, thank you so much forjoining us and congratulations, £27 million. Richard. We had comedy gold already, two Richard Curtis. Weve got three, another on the edge of my screen. Lots of Richard Curtis, never a bad thing some might say you could never have enough of Richard Curtis laughter my Richard Curtis laughter my family wouldnt agree but my family havent had that much for me because its been a script and a scramble. Youve only had three weeks, how did you get it together . Of course, we have captive performers, which is lucky so no one can say they are on a film set in morocco. Everyone is in the living rooms. It was actually exciting to stop the worry is the next time we do comic relief, everyone will say, can you do that in three weeks . Rosie, the first time comic relief and children in need have come together. So important, what has it meant to you, and involved in the preparation, scrambling . Meant to you, and involved in the preparation, scrambling . |j meant to you, and involved in the preparation, scrambling . I know, its been amazing. By charities have got such enormous and profound impact that it actually made it very, very strong. The culprit help that weve had, the reach that we had across the nation and the incredible generosity of the public was quite awesome. It was quite wonderful to see a telethon, as it were, without a shiny floor show, without the mass participation. But without the mass participation. But with the same enormous wealth of warmth and generosity generated across three hours. It was very, very moving. I was crying about five minutes. Richard, i dont know about you, everyone has their own little moments. I thought there was a wonderful surreal moment for me when matt lucas was with. Mr potato, his character question marks baked potato was lecturing the people of uk about how to say leek stay safe ona uk about how to say leek stay safe on a coronavirus. I uk about how to say leek stay safe on a coronavirus. I thought there was something magical about that. I know, there are some very strange things. My favourite moment was actually Catherine Tate and David Tennant doing i knew you were waiting. And stein coming on and saying dont stand so, dont stand so, dont stand so close to me, please. Sting coming on. A great show, the producers didnt even see the hosts. The only time we saw Paddy Mcguinness is when he got in his carand Paddy Mcguinness is when he got in his car and drove past. The generosity of the public is extraordinary and what we try to be is facilitators. In a way, it was like a relay race. We did our show, people give us the money and we hand it to the brilliant charities, the brilliant charities to the most Vulnerable People in the uk. It was an exciting night. Rosie, richard talks about the talent that came on board but one thing that struck me and you said this, the corporate help, companies that are really keen. This is an opportunity, Many Companies are often bashed for not being ethically sound or community driven. There is an opportunity now and there were Many Companies which iimagine and there were Many Companies which i imagine wanted or were approaching you to help. Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, i could name them all. Please dont but we saw them the premier league, 02, they absolutely came in some of them came in on the day and our teams were reaching out to them and they were responding. I think that. What i got from the show was the response from the general public, on screen and off screen. My favourite moment i think was peter kay doing amarillo with the front line staff, the Health Service joining in the song, clapping. It was a very, joining in the song, clapping. It was a very, very powerful. Also, i loved strictly, with people dancing and also people dancing in their front rooms and people giving each other hair cuts front rooms and people giving each other haircuts in front rooms and people giving each other hair cuts in their front rooms. Then what do you know, we have Prince William allegedly without his trousers on in his front room i think the thing that we have to crisis is. It is attacking the physically and mentally vulnerable. Children in need and comic relief have their systems already existing across the uk. We have funds, we have an emergency a fund that can provide white goods, beds for small children who dont have a bed. We already have these Funds Available and this resource available, we have the infrastructure. So now we can put. We have £27 million, and an extra top up from the government today to put into these charities, so we can help families who are in poverty. Families at risk of domestic abuse, people who are bereaved people who are struggling with mental Health Problems. Because this is isolation, their social distancing and a lack of work is very, very frightening for a lot of people and a lot of small children and young people and families will be struggling indeed, the message is also powerful but richard and rosie, well done for pulling it together. Raised £27 million, showing the public are still generous and still ca res public are still generous and still cares and both of you do as well. Good luck and thank you so much. And thank you to the bbc for inviting us to do it. It was a massive effort and im so thrilled that we were able to be useful. I think thats what Everyone Wants to be. My huge thanks to the public for being so generous. Appreciated by the public im sure. Richard and rosie, thanks so much. The time now is 8 49. Weve been talking to people who have been keeping people moving during the pandemic. Today, lorry drivers. They are responsible for keeping the shelves stocked in supermarkets. We can hear more. Ive always wanted to bea can hear more. Ive always wanted to be a truck driver and for this reason, to be able to keep the country going. This is the first time in my life Something Like this has ever happened and now is the best time to be a truck driver because the country need you. Usually, we start early morning, about four oclock. We start delivering to the stores at about six, seven oclock. Today were going to tesco to deliver. Helping to keep supermarkets stocked across the country. Its these lorrie drivers that are carrying our Everyday Essentials from fruit, to pasta, and washing powder, to toilet roll.
