Gavin, thank you very much. In a few minutes, we will speak to a security expert about the implications of that attack there was just back from barcelona himself. Pension scammers who cold call people in an attempt to defraud them out of their pensions savings could face fines of up to £500,000 under new government plans. Almost £5 million has been obtained by fraudsters from older savers pension pots this year, according to the dwp. The new measures will include a ban on all cold calls, texts and emails in relation to pensions. I dont want to criticise these measures because i i dont want to criticise these measures because i think its a really important to ban the government is introducing and i think it will help, but there is an element of guacamole about this problem and whenever you come they measure to stop fraudsters, eventually they will find some new scam, some new scheme, set which just about making it as hard as possible and sending as clear message is possible to consumers to investors, to hang a pond cold callers, to only trust reputable regulated Financial Institutions and, in that respect, all of this today will help. Tens of thousands of antiracism protesters are ta ken to tens of thousands of antiracism protesters are taken to the tens of thousands of antiracism protesters are ta ken to the streets of boston will stop we cant hear you. It was a day of taunting americas far right. This was the so called free speech rally and Police Violence many have been worried about that this was the citys response. A massive cou nterprotest citys response. A massive counterprotest of citys response. A massive cou nterprotest of bostonia ns condemning hate speech and racism. |j am outraged. We had to make a difference. I cant believe in 2017 that we are still marching for rights. Faced with the option to stand and say what is right and wrong, i cant sit at home and keep my views to myself when there is hate at there. They certainly have the right is big but we also have the right is big but we also have the right is big but we also have the right to congregate and show that we dont support what they have to say and i think the numbers will bear that out today. The two demonstrations, one outnumbering the others by many thousands, were kept apart to prevent trouble. But the far right demonstrators often wearing donald trump hats were unapologetic. With that defiance often angering those be im dumb. Around. Just one of those so free speech protesters have come out into the crowd and had to be exported by police through this very angry crowd whove come out, chanting anti trump slogans all day. The president has been underfire for failing the president has been underfire forfailing to the president has been underfire for failing to unequivocally condemn the far right activists that protesters in charlottesville last week. Even after a counter demonstration here, heather was killed. Today donald trump treated, looks like many anti Police Agitators in boston for the police are looking tough and smart. Thank you. There were moments of tension but on the whole, the day was peaceful. Much more about being a huge statement from people here but whatever their president does, they will come out in their droves to condemn bigotry when they see it. Firefighters in essex are battling a huge fire at a packaging warehouse. Around 100 firefighters were called to the flames as they tore through the building on festival way in basildon. Eight fire engines remain at the scene. The warehouse was completely alight and a industrial unit was also affected. There are not believed to be any casualties. It can be challenging enough to manoeuvre into a parking space at the best of times. So spare a thought for the owners of these vehicles who found the car park itself moved. As you can see, these vehicles were left dangling over the edge of a multi story car park in nottingham, which partially collapsed yesterday. Luckily no one was injured and incredibly it seems no cars were damaged either. Im not quite sure how you would get them out without damaging them. Or how many people would be willing to get in their cars to get them back out. It would take a brave soul, wouldnt it . Lets return to one of our top stories and those terror attacks in barcelona and cambrils. Spain is tightening security at its borders and in areas popular with tourists after the deadly terrorist attacks in barcelona and the resort of cambrils this week. 1a people died and many more were injured when a car and van were used to mow down innocent people. Detectives are still hunting for at least one suspect. Security specialist will geddes, was in barcelona when the attack took place, and hejoins us now from our london newsroom. A very good morning to you. You were there in barcelona when the attack happened. What do you make of spain s response to the attack . Happened. What do you make of spain s response to the attack . |j happened. What do you make of spain s response to the attack . I got the shout that the attack was obviously taking place and i was about a kilometre away and i headed straight over onto the area. I had been there a couple of hours earlier so i knew exactly where i was supposed to be heading where the was taking place. I have to say the spanish authorities were very, very quick. The Blue Light Services and the medics, the police, the Counterterrorism Branch were all very credibly quickly. They established according around the immediate area where the attacker taken place and las ramblas is a very difficult area to control. Its within the gothic area, a lot of winding side alleys and streets to that main boulevard. We have been told the terror cell has been dissembled, dismantled, but how significant is the threat, given that police are still looking for the man suspected of driving the van into people at las ramblas . The big concern the authorities will have right now was to ensure that they do indeed have other than the driver, every party involved, colluded, conspired or assisted in these attacks. It took place on the thursday afternoon and the friday early morning. Its ensuring about capturing the whole thing and especially in light of the authorities quite honestly and transparently have admitted that these individuals were not on their radar of their intelligence agencies. That is even more concerning particularly when it is a group of this size, it can be to a certain extent slightly more forgiveable, lone wolves, but these people, there will be serious questions needed to be answered in their own agencies. How significant is that there were three separate incidents festival at the house which exploded on the wednesday in one area, the attack in barcelona and another incident in cambrils . Very significant, tina. This is pure speculation on my part until the authorities confirm to the contrary, but i think certainly they were related. I think in terms of the device, which detonated on the Late Wednesday night, early thursday morning, this was a significant device and what im understanding, butane canister is where part of a device. Whether this was part of the attack plan and launched in las ramblas using a vehicle, we can only find out in time but that would have been the serious concern. Its interesting Iraqi Ground Forces have begun operation to retake one of the last city is held by the Islamic State group but at the same time we are seeing an escalation in these types of attacks in europe. Why do you think that is . Fundamentally, it comes to the call to arms which was made in 2014 and has been constantly reiterated within Islamic States publications, English Speaking publications. They have been encouraging home grown terrorists and those unable to go and join theirfight in and those unable to go and join their fight in syria and and those unable to go and join theirfight in syria and iraq to carry out attacks in their own home nations. We have been concerned about this for a considerable amount of time and, as you rightly say, the more that they are close down within syria and iraq, the more they will be returning to the home nations and therefore we are at an incredibly vulnerable time. Do we have to accept these attacks are becoming and will continue to be the new normal . I think we do unfortunate have to be philosophical that we have to be philosophical that we have to be philosophical that we have to accept that this will happen but in the same regard, they are still statistically incredibly low in terms of the chances of getting caught up in these incidences. Various governments and agencies are taking proactive measures but we hope that certainly the resources will be afforded to the agencies that have to keep eyes on these individuals so that we improve our chances of filing them. Thank you very much indeed for speaking to us from our london newsroom. Lets go to barcelona, the live shot of those tributes being paid to the victims who were caught up in those attacks are both in barcelona and down in cambrils. 0vernight, the king and queen of spain have been shoving their support. They laid flowers at their support. They laid flowers at the vigil last night. They will also ta ke the vigil last night. They will also take part in a Memorial Service at the main cathedral, the famous cathedral in a central barcelona. That Memorial Service getting underway later that the scene you are looking at, the flowers growing on las ramblas where the attack took place, that popular tourist street in the central barcelona. Sunday morning. Time now for a look at the weather. Good morning to you. A cool start to sunday but mostly drivers and sunshine. There is more cloud starting to encroach onto the skies. It is containing the fragments of what was a hurricane butting creases the cloud across wales, splashes of rain across devon and cornwall increasing as we go into the afternoon and eventually pushing across western wales. Northern ireland, scotland and england and wales staying dry for most of the day. Varying amounts of cloud but sunshine as well to enjoy but gets grey and greyer through the afternoon in the south west. Misty on the hills and coast and the breeze picks up. Heavy rainfall cardigan bay. Not too much rain further east. The midlands, south east will stay dry until we get into the evening. Sunny spells. Sunny spells across part of east anglia, Northern England and into scotland as well. One or two very isolated showers but the most a vast improvement on yesterday and it will feel very pleasant as it will do if youre heading to the albert dock in liverpool to watch the start of that round the world cup race. Light wind for the yachts for the bigger do with something stronger and they will do once they get out into open waters of the atlantic. Liverpool could get clipped by the rain which affects wales, southeast and the midlands overnight. Very misty and we will see heavy rain pushed towards Northern Ireland later. With that comes some very humid air but from the north of england into scotland, away from towns and cities, temperatures into single figures so cool but bright on monday, staying dry throughout the day but patchy rain and drizzle extending through the midlands towards wales. Heavier bursts in the north. And later in the south west scotla nd north. And later in the south west scotland and through parts of Northern England. To the south, lots of cloud and any cloud breaks will feel particular humid. Temperatures could be higher than shown on the chart. The far north of scotland, dry with sunny spells through the day and it will stay dry until tuesday. Patchy rain pushing northwards. Much of england and wales and Northern Ireland staying dry through tuesday and any cloud brea ks dry through tuesday and any cloud breaks will feel warmer. Temperatures, 27 degrees in south east england. Back to you both. That is good to hear. Thank you very much. Its been another eventful week for the american president. Mr trump has been mired in controversy over his response to that deadly demonstration in charlottesville insisting that antiracism protesters we re insisting that antiracism protesters were equally to blame for the violence which ended in the death of a woman. Good morning to you. Welcome to breakfast. It is hard to pick difficult weeks for president trump. There has been a lot of them but this one seems particularly remarkable. I think you are right. It is like layer upon layer of bad weeks. All the way back to january. He crossed the line on tuesday i think and that is, its one thing to tell americans that you need to consider the left in the right but when you appear to side with those who flew that see swastikas, who gave heil trump salutes and on top of that, the events which led to the dismissal of his key ideas man in the white house, it points not only toa the white house, it points not only to a split within the white house, with a general is time to keep trump in check, but also against the white house because bannon will aim to get some of his advisers. We have an administration which has to get its budget through by the end of september or it faces a shutdown. Budget through by the end of september or it faces a shutdownm also gives us a glimpse inside the west wing of some of the chaos going on about the arrivals and departures. If you just look at the photo of the original line up on his top team, very few of them are still left and there is a sense that we should think that this is all smooth and organised and professional, but it anything but in some cases. The white house has not been functional since the day after the inauguration when they basically told an untruth about the size of the inaugural crowd and that is because trump doesnt run this as a government. Hes tried to run it as a business with loyalists around him but not everybody is going to say yes sir, you are right and trump has tried to respond with the youre fired tactic from the apprentice and he is now in his bunker surrounded by family, his daughter, son in law, a few other loyalists, and then you have the generals, the chief of staff, the head of the pentagon, the National Security agency leader, trying to contain him and keep him from going on to social media. That battle in the white house does not promise stability. Bannon and his allies will cause further discord and i expect it may get even worse next week. One theory goes all of this is just a distraction technique, allies of the ball because we are looking at the chaos of the arrivals and departures and Everything Else in between and the suites and everything. And actually, the real work is being done elsewhere. And equally you might say not much has been done anyway. Tweets. Equally you might say not much has been done anyway. Tweets. Not much has been done in terms of legislation. Theyve not got a major single piece through congress. They failed to change health care, economic legislation, anything except pass very divisive executive orders like the muslim ban but in terms of this being an organised destruction, we got to get away from that. That is not someone who joins all the dots and thinks coherently. You react emotionally after watching tv and thats the problem. One tweet can and do the work agencies are trying to carry out to keep the government on an even keel. In one sentence, can he survive this . No hes gone by nextjune. The back up becomes will peel away because we seen as unstable. Good to talk to you. Youre watching breakfast. Time now for a look at the newspapers. Emma is back with us to tell us what caught her eye. A real mixed bag. You can tell it august but there are some great stories. There are some fun stories out there so lets start about drivers. 70,000 of them. They we re about drivers. 70,000 of them. They were caught using their phone and its not just people were caught using their phone and its notjust people text doing in stationary traffic the people on their phones. You see at all the time if you are driving around and we seem to understand drink driving is bad and we shouldnt do that. We are scared of doing that. We kind of feel like the deterrent isnt Strong Enough here. What can the government be doing to stop people doing this because it is illegal and its only going to get worse for that we are attached and obsessed to our phones. The message needs to get out there your phone needs to be somewhere on the other seat, in the back, where you cant touch it. We talked about tougher rules on if you are caught. The difficulty is enforcing it, isnt it . The police say we dont necessarily have the resources to be able to stop and fine everyone caught doing this. That is the difficulty. How do you report it . If you are driving you cant stop and do something about it but something needs to be done and i suppose, if we start hearing stories of people getting driving bans, lifetime bans, it will put you. Theres also that social stigma because its got to go the way of drink driving. Ecstatically. At the moment its not socially unacceptable like drink driving and that wasnt initially and people used and quite freely so hopefully, as the years go on people will start absolutely condemn people who do that because its very dangerous. Lots of talk about bruce forsyth. We talked about it yesterday. Home time may give him his own statue. Study come dancing will do something and the bbc have their own things, but his hometown of edmonton, the cancer last day in, the council are saying lets get a statue. They will have to think about the financial concerns and i think you would be lovely. Its a lovely idea. I like this story. £6,000 slice. William and kate, the biggest wedding of our generation, six years ago, the cake is still lingering. You are supposed to keep it for the first christening but you are giving it beyond that and a slice will be auctioned and i think it will raise £6,000. I dont get it. Even if you hang onto a bit from your own wedding. What do you do with it . Leave it in the box . People are obsessed with royalty, i suppose. It a special piece of memorabilia. I personally wouldnt give it £6, let alone £6,000. As far as royal memorabilia goes, £6,000, you can buy better things. Can you imagine going to someones house and they will say, look what i have just bought. Awkward. And the preservation things. How do you keep it . If it is full of booze apparently. So many questions im not going to say any more. Someone will buy it and i imagine it will sell for a lot of money. Thank you. Coming up in the next half hour. Well be live in liverpool as amateur sailors make their final preparations for the worlds longest ocean race. Andy gill is there for us this morning. And some of those participants are there with him. Who have you got with you . Nobody at the moment because the crew is taking part in the opening ceremony. There is music, fireworks, they are being introduced to the people lining the albert dock along here. Later this morning they will be sailing out of the albert dock into another part of the albert dock into another part of the system and then into the river mersey 41230 one the round the world race begins, 40,000 nautical miles, 11 months facing all of the seven seas. That white van looks precarious. The wheels are completely dangling off the back. You dont want to put the car into reverse accidentally. Jess, lets talk sport. Yesterday, i spoke to you about how impressive englands batsman had been against the west indies. Today, it was all about the bowling and stuart broad, whose brilliant performance yesterday basically won the first test for england. He is now second on englands all time test wicket taking list, overtaking his hero, sir ian botham. Englands cricketers have swept the west indies aside in just three days to take a 1 0 series lead. That will not help the west indies players here. There are two more tests to go in these series. They will be conventional matches. As for the day night experiment, i think that the people of birmingham and the ground really tried to make it work. He has obviously been a hero of mine, watching him bowland he has obviously been a hero of mine, watching him bowl and place throughout my younger years, the influence he has had on me, his performance against australia was inspiration. So its great to chat to him now. You can see how happy he is for me. Its a special day and a Wonderful Team performance. But it was lovely to get that three wicket speu was lovely to get that three wicket spell towards the end of the day to see us home. In the premier league, Manchester United fans may well have their heads in the clouds after another impressive performance. Liverpool also won, but arsenal came unstuck at stoke. Adam wild has the details. Football is rarely straightforward. But it can look that way if you are winning well. Two 4 0 victories so far, Manchester United are keeping things simple so far. No need to close the doors. I just want to let the horses run. And they were magnificent. It took some time against swansea to find the freedom. 1 0 up at half time. Then running away with a gallop. Three goals in four ruthless minutes. Romelu lukaku, paul pogba, anthony martial. The season still beginning, but united making things look easy. United 4 0 swansea liverpool were made to wait as well against crystal palace. Sadio mane got the only goal of the game. Just one goal at stoke, where fans did not have to wait long. What a moment for the new boy he only arrived this week. The winner against arsenal, the perfect welcome. For southampton, things appeared to be going to plan. 2 0 up against a west ham side reduced to ten men. 0nly forjavier hernandez to score twice to level the match. It took a late Charlie Austin penalty to turn it back. A remarkable climax to what has been a thrilling afternoon it was a day when some were making things look simple. But the saints won it the hard way. Adam wild, bbc news. Elsewhere, watford won 2 0 at bournemouth. West brom beat burnley. When you go to the cinema, are you a rom com go to the cinema, are you a rom com go oran go to the cinema, are you a rom com go or an action fan . I prefer a rom com. I know that is the stereotype. I ask because we are talking about stunts next, so stay tuned. Though that was the wrong answer each to their own but i am all about the action films. Theyre the scenes that bring action films to life. Daring, extreme energy stunts of high speed car chases, fights or explosions. But in the last seven days, one stunt performer was killed in a motorcycle accident and tom cruise broke his ankle jumping between buildings. Its put the safety of stunt performers under scrutiny. Amanda foster and Martin Shenton are both stunt doubles. Martin is also a stunt coordinator. You both do them and designed them. Tell me what it involves . Well, it sta rts tell me what it involves . Well, it starts off where you talk with production and the director. You get the script and you break it down. You look at all the technical parts of it and what is needed. A lot of the times, the director has a process of what he likes, and then you work it through it. It is kind of what they can and cant have. Dust of the time, you can get it. |j imagine you have to have a lot of conversations. The director wants this and this is what you can safely deliver. Can get difficult . It can. Sometimes, you get issues with what they want to do. But then we try and design a way of doing it as safely as possible. Such a cooljob title. Amanda, when did you first decide to bea amanda, when did you first decide to be a stunt woman . I fell into it by accident, forgive the pun iwas working as a background artist on a film called patriot games with harrison ford, and there was a huge stunt scene and i was like, wow, i like that. And i spoke to one of the stuntmen and they said there were no black stunt women in the uk and they had to use a man to double grace jones on a bond film called a view toa jones on a bond film called a view to a kill so i thought, great, im going to start to feel that niche. And not only are you a stunt woman, but you are a stunt double for halle berry . She is one among a few. We can see a clip of you in action. This is in die another day. This was a descend on a wire. So here is halle. Obviously, and the rest of it is me. Then they get a close up of the actress at the end of the shot. How much training goes into Something Like that . Quite a few rehearsals to get the action right, make sure i pull out my weapon at the right time. And from the high tension of a bond film, you have also been in a boots ad. But this also been in a boots ad. But this also has a daring stunt in it. Luckily, boots asked me to do a commercial for them, which was fantastic. And it was very high octane. And really exciting. Fantastic. And it was very highoctane. And really exciting. So this is you. Did you have any wires . Am not sure how much i am allowed to talk about it, but yes. There was definitely an element of risk involved. Definitely. And it was a great opportunity to be myself. It is rare that you are seen as yourself. Tell us about some of the most dangerous situations you have been in. Sometimes, we have heard it can go wrong. It can, and there is an element of risk to some of the big stunts. Some of them are straightforward, but even simple things like falling down the stairs, you can hurt yourself. I did one for corrie, and you have to remember to keep everything tucked in, fingers, hands. I thought i had and my thumb was still sticking up and i felt it afterwards. There is an element of risk, but it is a risk i am willing to take. Martin, this job is inherently risky. You know what youre getting into when you sign up. But how much organisation goes into it and how much regulation is there in the industry . There was a lot of planning. You have to put your risk assessments together, work out what the stunt is. There are elements that need work, but everything has a level where there has to be changed. Regulation changes on a regular basis. But with an industry that has been around forever, since the Film Industry started, forever, since the Film Industry started, people to do things certain way. But productions have gone from harold lloyd to hanging offa gone from harold lloyd to hanging off a clock to massive sequences with cars flying through the air and peoplejumping with cars flying through the air and people jumping out of them. And our expectation of a stunt gets greater and greater. Yeah, you see actors doing green screen, but the stunt performers do it for real. This is mind boggling stuff. Everybody wants things better and better and harder and harder, and they push the envelope on a regular basis. What a fascinating job. The clipper round the world yacht race starts in liverpool later this morning. 12 teams will spend a year sailing the globe in a 40,000 nautical mile race, featuring 700 participants over eight stages. 0ur reporter andy gill is at albert dock for us this morning. So there are a lot of amateur sailors taking part . Thats right, about 40 of the crews have never done any oceangoing sailing before, but they are fully trained. The crowds are beginning to gather at the albert dock. In half an hour, the albert dock. In half an hour, the swing bridge behind me were open and the yachts will head out into the next part of the dock before heading into the mersey. Here are the boats. 0ne heading into the mersey. Here are the boats. One of the members of the crew of the liverpool boat is dom littlewood, the one shows Consumer Affairs expert. Tell us which links you are going to sail on. Seven and eight, which is the west coast of america, seattle, down through the panama canalup america, seattle, down through the panama canal up towards new york. Quick respite, then across the atlantic to derry, Northern Ireland, then back to liverpool. This time next year, i should be here. Why choose those legs . Warmth, beauty, the wildlife you see out there. I would love to go around the world, but this race takes 11 months. I cant take 11 months off work. For me, coming home will be amazing. Why put yourself through all the discomfort, the weather and everything . Where we did our four weeks of compulsory training, some of it was pretty gruesome. Everybody said the same thing, why are we here . When i am lying on my deathbed, as we all will be one day, i will have a big smile on my face and think that i did it. This will be the experience of a lifetime. Its one of the toughest endurance races in the world, and youre pushing yourself to your limits. There are 21 people aboard that boat, one skipper and 21 crew, nearly all of whom have no sailing experience. Its all about team building, bonding, the report, the trials and tribulations. Its going to be amazing. You have had a couple of Health Scares recently. Is this about getting the most out of life . I have always had that philosophy. Do everything you can while you can. Its a Wonderful World we live in and various an awful lot of things to do. That is not what has driven me to do this. I will do anything that is exciting and fun. I am a type one diabetic, so and fun. I am a type one diabetic, so it will be hard for me to monitor that as well. It is just the experience of a lifetime. See you in july 2018, which is when all the boats are due home from the voyage. Lets hope they have good weather for that. They will have various challenges as they had around the globe. Even getting to the atlantic for the first stage in uruguay it is a breeding ground for storms at this time of year. Hurricane gert of course formed earlier in the week and got very close to the United States. It stayed offshore and remained a hurricane for a few days, but notice how that has pushed northwards. It is no longer a hurricane. It has got mixed in with cloud pushing off the american continent. Its biggest impact will be in driving up the humid air towards our shores after a fairly cool day. It has been a cool start to this morning. The winds are light in liverpool and will remain so for the start of the race, but picking up the start of the race, but picking up throughout the day. The cloud will bring outbreaks of rain. But most of the uk will be dry with sunny spells, a big improvement on the past few days. But it does turn grey misty in devon and cornwall. Heavy bursts of rain into west wales. 0ccasional patchy and light rain elsewhere. The midlands should stay dry until the evening. Across east anglia, a fine day in store. It stays dry to the north of Northern Ireland. Scotland will have lighter winds. Most will have a fine day. This evening, after heavy rain in wales, that will pushed was the midlands and south east england. That strip of rain separates the more humid air from that strip of rain separates the more humid airfrom the that strip of rain separates the more humid air from the south west, with lots of missed in it. Last night like last month, we will have single figure temperatures in the countryside. Patchy rain and drizzle in the south east, the midlands and wales. Heavy rain across Northern Ireland and also into scotland during the day. The far north of scotland stays dry and bright. It will feel particularly warm in the south. The humid air makes it to all but central and northern scotland for tuesday. Here, some outbreaks of rain. Sunny spells will lift temperatures widely into the 20s, maybe as high as 27 degrees across parts of southern england. That is much more like it for august. Many of us dream about packing in the job to see the world. Well, one couple did that 17 years ago and are still on the road travelling the globe. The zapps set off from their home in argentina in a vintage car injanuary 2000 and have since had four children. The family have finally arrived in england. Emma glasbey went to meet them in North Yorkshire. 17 years, 80 countries and four babies along the way. The zapps travelled the world in their vintage car, relying on the generosity of people they meet. Now they have arrived in North Yorkshire to spend time with a family at a farm. They say they are living the dream. We should all follow our dreams. That is the reason why we are here, on this planet. You must have had some difficult times . Very difficult, very challenging times. Sometimes i wonder why i have this challenge. I would prefer to be in my house. When the zapps left argentina, it was just the two of them. Their children were born in the us, argentina, canada and australia. The children are taught by their parents on the road. Geography lessons are something special. I think if you have kids, you have a responsibility to show them the beautiful world we live in , geography lessons. We never heard them say, are we there yet . They know that we will get there. After a few days in york, they will be exploring the north of england, and then scotland. It is something of a change from some of their more recent tropical destinations. What do you think of the weather . It is very rainy. It rains a lot. It rains a lot, but it is really nice when its sunny. What do you think of our weather . It is like a woman. In one day you are getting everything from her. The zapps are trying to fund the rest of their travels with a book about their lives. At some point they will return home to argentina, but for now, there is so much more of the world to explore. From one extraordinaryjourney to another. This month marks the fortieth anniversary of nasas launch of voyager1 and voyager 2. They were originally sent to explore jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune. But the probes have since travelled well beyond these planets and are now tasked with exploring interstellar space. Lets go back to 1977 and remind ourselves how this incredible journey began. Three, two, one. We have ignition, and we have liftoff. We have liftoff of the titan centaur, carrying the first of two voyager spacecraft to extend mans senses farther into the solar system than ever before. The wonderful thing about the journey is not just that its 40 years long, but in fact, its still discovering new things, because its going where nothing has been before. They will continue until they finally run out of power. But they will orbit at the centre of the milky way galaxy, for billions of years our silent ambassadors. Joining us now is chris copperwheat, an astrophysicist at liverpooljohn moores university. This is incredible. What blows my mind is that a spacecraft was launched before i was born 40 years ago, with computers from back then, is 11 billion miles away and still working . Yeah. Still working. It is testa m e nt to working . Yeah. Still working. It is testament to the engineers who designed this. The genesis of the mission goes back to the 60s. These are incredible distances we are talking about. The way you travel, use a planets gravitational slingshot. It was recognised in the 60s that in the 70s there would be this perfect alignment so you can visit all the planets and slingshot from one to the next. 40 years ago today, voyager two launched. That was the one that launched first, strangely. Learned a few weeks later, voyager one. So many questions about this. As tina said, the launch was 40 years ago. The technology was very different. So there were computers on board these vehicles that are 40 years old. Most stuff we have at home will not last 40 yea rs. Stuff we have at home will not last 40 years. How are these lasting . This is it. Everything that goes into space is properly flight tested for reliability. But yeah, if you think of computers in 1977, they we re think of computers in 1977, they were a room sized. Squeezing down the radio transmitters and all the stu d e nts the radio transmitters and all the students that do the scientific measurements, it is all working and still sending back data. And this was beyond what was conceived. The mission was to look at the first four planets, and that finished in the late 80s, and then these things kept going and sending back data. Give us a snapshot of the most significant findings in those 40 yea rs. Significant findings in those 40 years. They really opened up the solar system to us. It really put earth in its context because before we visited these moons ofjupiter and saturn and that sort of thing, we saw for the first time active volcanoes on we saw for the first time active volcanoes on one we saw for the first time active volcanoes on one of the moons of jupiter. We saw atmospheres, we saw icy moons with water underneath. It really put earth in the context of the wider solar system and set the stage for the missions that have gone since then. In recent years, we have seen missions going back to these moons to look for signs of life, but the original inspiration was the voyager mission. |j life, but the original inspiration was the voyager mission. I am looking at the calculator that tells us how far away these things are from us. This is on the nasa website. 0n voyager two, from us. This is on the nasa website. 0n voyagertwo, nearly 11 billion miles from earth and voyager one nearly 12 billion miles away. How are they being powered . Most spacecraft are solar powered. It is a reliable technology, but these things are so far away that if they we re things are so far away that if they were to turn around and look at the sun, it would be like a. Com orany other star in the sky. So there is no energy to power these things. There is a Nuclear Battery on board which is turning heat that turns into electricity. That battery is extremely long lasting and sets the life span of the mission. The power from that will decline and these things will finally end in the mid 20205, things will finally end in the mid 2020s, when the power is not sufficient to power the radio transmitter. And it takes 15 hours to get a message. Incredible. Thank you for explaining all of that. Thats all we have time for today. Dan and steph will be back tomorrow morning from 6. Have a great sunday.
