The Cyclistjess Varnish Has told the bbc she feels she was Thrown Under The Bus after making allegations of sexism in the sport. A leaked report, published in the daily mail, Claims British Cycling Sanitised its own inquiry into the claims. The olympian told the bbcs sports editor, dan roan, she believed the truth was finally coming out. Representing great britain, jess varnish she is the medal winner who became a whistleblower. Jess varnishs allegations of sexism last year plunged British Cycling into crisis. It has been really hard. Ive been really low. Nothing has been in control, everything has been out of my control. Out of my control. I had nobody to turn to within the organisation. I was just sort of left on my own. Coach shane sutton, who dropped varnish from the squad for the rio olympics last year, was found to have used sexist language towards her, but was cleared of eight of nine allegations against her. He resigned, but denies wrongdoing. According to a draft report of an investigation leaked to the daily mail, findings of an internal review into varnishs allegations were reversed by British Cyclings board. I am relieved that the truth is coming out. I have been pulled from pillar to post just to get this, and to see that it was a cover up is huge. In a statement, British Cycling admitted it did not pay sufficient care and attention to the well being of staff, but it said that reforms were under way. Those people who say it is sour grapes because you werent selected for rio, you will have heard those arguments, whats your response to that . When people say its bitterness, thats all they have to say about me. If people knew me and saw what i was doing with my life and how i have turned things around, they would know the truth. They would know that im not bitter at all. Should shane sutton work in Cycling Coaching again . From my experiences, no. Varnish says she is now considering whether to sue British Cycling for unfair dismissal. Her fight for justice continues. The world is facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since 1945, with more than 20 Million People at risk of starvation and famine. Thats according to the United Nations humanitarian chief, stephen obrien, who has pleaded for help for people in yemen, somalia, south sudan and nigeria. Andy moore reports. A child called fatima. She lives in yemen, where two thirds of the population need food aid, and Seven Million are hungry. The United Nations has been told the famine across four countries is now the biggest crisis for the organisation since it was founded in 1945. We stand at a critical point in our history. Already, at the beginning of the year, we are facing the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the United Nations. Now, more than 20 Million People across four countries face starvation and famine. In south sudan, more than one million children are acutely malnourished, and there is a Cholera Outbreak to deal with as well. The un says billions of dollars is needed from the International Community to feed the hungry, but so far only a fraction of that money has got through. The overall requirement for south sudan this year stands at 1. 6 billion us. As of now, we have received 9. 3 of that amount, and more funding is urgently needed. Some food aid is being delivered. The United Nations says famine can be averted, but the world needs to dig deep into its pockets, right now. Pope francis has said the Catholic Church should consider allowing married men to become priests. Online touts who Bulk Buy Tickets and sell them for inflated prices will face unlimited fines under government plans. An amendment to the Digital Economy bill means it will be illegal to use use software to buy thousands of tickets. tickets to see some of our favourite artists can sell out in just a matter of minutes. But thousands of those tickets will not be going to fans. Instead, theyre being purchased by bots. Used by professional touts, the software can grab hundreds of tickets in one go. Within hours, they end up on secondary websites for hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than face value. This is currently legal, but now the government is taking action. Now touts who use this software will face unlimited fines, while resale sites will face harsher measures if they do not prove they are taking action to deal with the touts. It is hoped these measures will curb the growing power of secondary websites and make it easier for genuine fans to get their hands on a reasonably priced ticket. Nearly a year since allegations of sexism first began to emerge a leaked draft report has this week delivered a damning indictment of British Cycling. Now the original whistle blower, jess varnish, has called for the entire board to resign. She spoke to the bbcs dan roan in her first broadcast interview and the daily mails Sports Correspondent Martha Kelner who joins us now. Good morning to you. Morning. First of all, whatjess is saying in the interview is incredibly strong. Shes saying the whole system is wrong should be got rid of. Yeah, i think shes justified for having those views. Theyre quite serious allegations that are made in this lea ked allegations that are made in this leaked report which the daily mails seen. They say that there was a separate investigation into claims of sexism Thatjess Varnish made against herformer of sexism Thatjess Varnish made against her former coach, which of sexism Thatjess Varnish made against herformer coach, which he resigned over. This draft report says that the findings of the original report were Notjust Sanitised but the findings were reversed. So this is a huge cover up. You can understand her saying that she thinks the entire British Cycling board, which rubber stamped that cover up, should go. She has had afairold that cover up, should go. She has had a fair old time of it. She was the person who put her head above the person who put her head above the parapet to start with. Yes, i saw her yesterday along with dan roan. She was saying exactly a year ago today since she was let go from the British Cycling elite performance programme. Shed been there 11 years. She was a Potential Medallist going to rio. Within a space of a week her life fell apart. She decided to speak out and she has, you know, its emboldened other people who were in the system to speak out. Its created the debate about elite sport basically and what you have to do to get the best out of your athletes. You mention the issue of the cover up, which is in many stories, sometimes becomes a bigger story than the original problem. From what you understand from this report are individuals named in relation to the cover up . Not in relation to the cover up. But the board, it was a uk sport funded investigation. The board said that they believe from what they have read that the findings of the original report into jess read that the findings of the original report intojess varnishs claims of sexism and discrimination against shane sutton were not sanitised they were reversed. thats the case, is it tenable, jess was asked the question, can those people remain in their roles for the sport to have any kind of legitimacy, what do you think . personally agree with jess. I legitimacy, what do you think . personally agree withjess. I think the positions of that board is untenable. Because British Cycling is, make no bones about it, its a sport in crisis. The mp Damien Collins said it was in tatters. More so collins said it was in tatters. More so than that, i think this board does have to go because they want to move into this era of transparency and change. If youve got people who have allegedly have done something as serious as a cover up have allegedly have done something as serious as a cover up then how can you move forward . Do you know, do you have any insight about what is going on in British Cycling at the moment . Whats the atmosphere like within the team now . Go back a few years, like within the team now . Go back a few yea rs, to like within the team now . Go back a few years, to the london olympics, those glorious, fantastic days in the velodrome, when everybody was so, you know, the mood was incredible, everybody so happy. Whats it like there now . From what i hear its a bit of a bizarre atmosphere. Youve got the new chair jonathan browning, who briefed the riders last week about a 39 point plan to move forward, but then obviously, hes been dragged back into this crisis from the leaked report. I think its an odd situation because you do have British Cycling from a performance Point Of View and medal Point Of View. Theyve done fantastically well. We dominated in rio as we did in london and beijing before that. You have that on one hand. But i believe you can have an environment where some people flourish, but others feel like this draft report said, some people are traumatised by their experience. There i dont think the two ideas are mutually exclusive. You can have good Medal Performances and have happy athletes. Doesnt suit everybody. Exactly. Youre here as a journalist, not as someone involved on either side. But the issue you we re on either side. But the issue you were raising there, there will be people watching this thinking, you know what, we were all celebrating when British Cycling did so well. We knew it was a tough regime. They boasted of their meticulous detail they went into, there will be a thought process, notwithstanding the terrible things that have maybe happened to individuals, if you want success , happened to individuals, if you want success, there are certain things that you wouldnt otherwise have to accept in ordinary work place thats are different in those environments. What do you make of that kind of argument . Yeah, i think it is an interesting debate. I think its important that it does come to fruition. I think, important that it does come to fruition. Ithink, as important that it does come to fruition. I think, as i said, you can have both. You can have an environment where athletes are happy but also performing well. Jess said she obviously has had many things levelled at her, predominantly that shes bitter and thats why shes speaking out. She was in the programme for 11 years. She says she is tough. She is a hard worker. You dont survive for 11 years if youre particularly weak. I should say before we let you go, we have a statement from British Cycling. The board of British Cycling is wholly committed to embracing the draft recommendations and findings of the review has already drawn up a detailed action plan in response to the whole thing. The board may disagree with the factual accuracy of certain points in the independent review. It believes the sport is best served by driving forward the action plan. Well see. Yeah, martha, thank you very much for joining us. Its 8. 15 exactly. Lets look at the weather. Louise has the details. Hi there. Half an hour ago i had two Weather Watcher pictures down to the south. Dont want to be accused of being south seb trick, so this is in the north. This is cloudy and theres some outbreaks of rain in scotla nd theres some outbreaks of rain in scotland as we speak. Different story in kent. The sunshine is already up and youll probably see the best of the weather and the warmth today. The reason being for the two contrasts is this Weather Front into the north west. It is going to drift steadily southwards through the morning. Weaken off considerably as well. An improving picture into the far north by 9am. You could see sunshine later on. Showery, drizzly rain into Northern Ireland. Eventually into the isle of man through the latter stages of the morning. At 9am, cloud across Northern England down into the midlands and into the south west. But its mild with it. In actual Fa Ct A Cross but its mild with it. In actual fact across england and wales its going to be a mild day generally. Best of the sunshine likely to be down into the south east. Temperatures will respond. Cloud nibbling away really up into the midlands. Brighter, Sunnier Skies into the afternoon. 17 degrees the high, 63 fahrenheit. OurWeather Front by then a band of drizzle, a nuisance. That means that for much of the Sporting Events taking place, its perfect Weather Conditions light winds, dry with sunshine coming through. Pleasant enough, 15 degrees at twickenham this afternoon. There could be drizzle around for the middlesbrough match. Kickoff at lunch time. But arsenal, lincoln for the 6th round fa cup should be dry with some sunshine. Overnight we might see more rain arriving. It will be cloudy. Therell be coastal and hill fog. Showery rain for a time. Another Weather Front by the end of the night pushing into the west. That brings heavier rain. Mild night, not a cold one at all. But these two Weather Fronts almost merging together on sunday. So however you look at it, it is going to be a miserable start to the second half of the weekend. Some rain around. The rain pushing in from the west, it gradually moves steadily eastwards. That means improvement for Northern Ireland, for western scotland, wales and South West England. Sunny spells and scattered showers into the afternoon. But a different day for the south east in comparison to today with 17 degrees, 10 to 13 at the very best. And the rain could linger all day. Back to you two. 0h, you two. Oh, dear louise. Thank you. For 50 years the laws on Abortion Have remained unchanged, meaning a woman must have the consent of two doctors to end her pregnancy. Under those rules a woman who takes a pill at home could potentially face life imprisonment. Now a labour mp is calling for the legislation to be updated. But pro life critics say it could pave the way for sex selective abortions and terminations on demand. Breakfasts Jayne Mccubbin reports. My first reaction was, i dont want to have a baby. Straightaway, how am i going to care for this being when i cant even care for myself . Emily tells me why she had an abortion. She was broke, she had depression, she couldnt cope. She had to wait one month for a termination. That was the worst month of my life. I was googling ways to induce miscarriage and i think that in itself proves its too long. Youre risking womens lives because i could have really hurt myself during that time. You could have faced a Jail Sentence . I dont have any words for that. To punish a woman who is already in such an unstable and vulnerable position. What do you think youre doing to that womans life . Just under 200,000 abortions were carried out in the uk in 2015, most in rooms like this. The nhs says women should wait about two weeks, but it can be more than twice that. Figures indicate these tablets used to miscarry are increasingly being bought illegally online by women who refuse to wait. Two doctors sign off every abortion. Now, this is unlike any other medical procedure. But no other procedure involves ending a life and thats whats key here, isnt it . Were in the 21st century. We trust women to make decisions about their lives, about their healthcare, and abortion should be no different. But others say the delay that comes with not one but two gps is essential when deciding the fate of not one but two lives. Many women go for that initial consultation and by the time they come back they actually change their minds. Its an important step in the process to make sure women are making the right decision for them. Do you have any statistics to back that argument up . We do know that about 30 of women who go for initial consultations never go through with the process. The difficulty with the termination is once you have done that, if its a rushed process, you cant change your mind. Her office later said this figure had been given by a leading clinician. We could find no evidence of it. Abortion is an emotive subject. But while the Royal College of midwives has backed the petition, the proposal, more than a thousand midwives have joined the proposal, more than a thousand midwives havejoined a not in my thousand midwives havejoined a Not In My Name petition. They fear it could pave the way for Sex Selection Abortions on demand. We didnt achieve what i always believed was what women needed, which was choice. Diana monday was a key Figure Calling for change in the 60s, just as she is today. I was a lone public voice, but i was not the only person who had had an abortion. They were all there, the voices, but they were unheard and unfortunately they stayed unheard. They still are unheard. I am appalled. 50 years later on, we are still fighting for this. 0h, appalled. 50 years later on, we are still fighting for this. Oh, my goodness. This is the hate mail . Yes. She shows me the hate mail her campaign attracted in one file. Letters from women who pleaded for help in another. That fine line between the rights of a woman and the rights of an unborn child will be scrutinised again on monday. Its 8. 8. 21am. This is breakfast from bbc news. Its time for a look at todays newspapers. The writer and broadcaster tim walker is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Morning. Lets whiz through the front pages first. On the daily mail. Theyre looking at the budget and some of the Stealth Taxes theyre talking about, specifically about death taxes, saying that many people have to take out a loan just to pay the bills after they die. Front page of the times there, theresa may, yeah. Thats what were talking about. Were talking about the picture on the front page in a moment with tim. On the front of the guardian these are quotes from Bernie Sanders about donald trump, can you see the headline there. Pathological liar. Ticket touts is the other story there. Touts who use softwa re the other story there. Touts who use software to buy Concert Tickets in bulk could face major fines. Should we leave that there and talk to tim . Got a bit confused which story is which. Ill make you confused. Pick out your story. The hangover from Philip Hammonds first budget continues. The tory supporting Daily Telegraph quotes a poll that the decision to break the partys 2015 General Election pledge not to raise National Insurance means nowjust one in four voters see the tories as a low tax party. 55 of those polled since theresa mays should have honoured her partys pledge not to raise taxes. More woringly for the prime minister, they say the budget has made people less likely to vote conservative. Its said mrs mays eight month honeymoon has come to an end at the worst possible time because of brexit. People are, i dont know if they are still talking about a quick election, is this now the situation where she might be thinking, you know, that really isnt going to happen, she might do a gordon brown . The issue of course is where is the opposition. She knows exactly where they are in the polls. It almost seems unsporting frankly to have an election now. Its like having a Football Match when The Away Team hasnt bothered to show up. The times today says, a very interesting poll of labour Party Members, just not ordinary people, labour Party Members, the very people that put corbyn into his job, they are saying that a yougov poll shows that 46 of them now see sir keir starmer as the best man to lead the party. 4696 . 4696, if mr corbyn steps down hes very much the favourite. More than half of the Party Members who voted for corbyn in the first place, 54 now see him asa in the first place, 54 now see him as a poor leader and a Majority Believe mr corbyn should step down before the election. The the pledge thing you were talking about and this applies to all political parties, be careful what you pledge. They are saying there were technicalities, there were brackets that follow the pledge. Thats not what people take from a pledge. No, and the spirit has to be observed, not just the letter of and the spirit has to be observed, notjust the letter of it. They tried to get out of it on the technicalities. You know with these polls i read in newspapers, they a lwa ys polls i read in newspapers, they always have the dont knows i wonder what will happen if the dont knows seem to form a government. Theyre getting more and more strong. Where are we going next . The guardian writes the story of Katie Hopkins and the trouble shes got into with regard to twitter. When i write a story for a newspaper, ive got the editor, ive got lawyers, subeditors, colleagues sitting round me saying, like, Sergeant Wilson in dads army, is that wise . Do you really wa nt dads army, is that wise . Do you really want to say that hopkins, like everybody who is brave enough to go on twitter, shes there on her own. She writes something, she doesnt check the facts. She gets into trouble. Here, this woman who also writes a column for the daily mail, but interestingly they dont run the story today, rightly theyve nothing to do with this. This is her in her own life saying this. Shes been ordered to pay £24,000 libel damages, plus legal costs running well into six figures to the writer and food bloggerjack monroe, who she mixed up with Somebody Else who desecrated war memorials. This begs the question about the notion people have about twitter being somehow different from other forms of communication, in the past people have got into trouble for. People think about it, well we put it out there and its gone. Its not of consequence. You there and its gone. Its not of consequence. You need to. I would advise everybody on twitter to mug up advise everybody on twitter to mug up on your libel. Youve got to be careful. Some of these twitter followers, they will do a tweet read by more people than do a newspaper. They have to take responsibility for their actions. Weve seen a guy who made threats to gina miller online being in difficulties now with the police. Rightly so. We have to take responsibility, notjust us in newspapers, everybody has to take responsibility when you are communicating with large numbers of people. Shall we cheer ourselves up a bit. I know this has been around a long time everybody. Youve probably all seen it. Were going to show you again. It isjust all seen it. Were going to show you again. It is just too funny to ignore today. This is the story about the interview on bbc world, this poor man was chatting to bbc news i think it was, and his two children totally stole the show. Lets just look at it. Studio what will it mean for the wider region, i think one of your children hasjust wider region, i think one of your children has just walked wider region, i think one of your children hasjust walked in. Shifting sands in the region, relations with the north may change . I would be surprise today they do. Pardon me. My apologies. Whats this going to mean for the region . My apologies. Erm. Going to mean for the region . My apologies. Erm. North going to mean for the region . My apologies. Erm. North korea, south koreas policy towards north korea have been severely limited in the last six months to a year. Its the way that when shes kneeling down, they might not be able to see her. Its like a classic panto, behind you pour Professor Robert kelly, the eminent, Serious Expert On Asian politics trying to do his things. He was trying to keep it sensible while mayhem was breaking out behind him. While trying to push his child out of the picture quite strongly. A lot of people know, we do a lot of interviews with people now because of new technology at home, via skype. Im surprised it doesnt happen more often really. You often see people, they set themselves up ina see people, they set themselves up in a position against a back drop of a wall or whatever, and thats possibly partly why. You get people saying, oh, god look at his interior decor, what happened there . All kinds of stuff can happen. At least when its in the studio, its anonymous, we dont have to keep looking behind us. Thats in all the papers today. I really like your next story as well. This is in the daily mirror. Major tim. The tabloid with a sense of humour. We need that now, my goodness. There are reports in other papers quoting by the way harvard professors saying Energy Flashers that we see and are aware of in distant galaxies, could be Alyens Firing up their space craft. This is quite relevant what sir tim peake is saying today, the british astronaut who spent 186 days on an International Space station. He said he was never given any training about the etiquette in terms of what would happen if he met a martian or somebody from outer space. He reckons that was remiss. It reminds me ofan reckons that was remiss. It reminds me of an advert in private Eye Re Ce Ntly me of an advert in private eye recently in which two martians came to earth, one said, take me to your leader. To earth, one said, take me to your leader. Theyre to earth, one said, take me to your leader. Theyre looking at trump and one saying, seriously, take me to your leader. We will see you a little later, thank you. In the next half an hour, how do you greet your child at the end of the school day, with a smile or maybe with your head down in the mobile . Perhaps checking your phone . We ask whether one head teacher is right to put up signs discouraging the use of smartphones at the school gate. Headlines coming up next. Hello, this is breakfast with Charlie Stayt and sally nugent. Coming up, louise will have the weekends Weather Forecast for you. First, a summary of this mornings main news. We are leading with football. Fa cup special with dan. agree with you. We are digressing. Lincoln beating ipswich in whatever round it was was like Climbing Everest and beating brighton was getting to the moon. Where can they go now with arsenal . Theyre playing good football, as well. Theyre not lumping the ball. You would expect arsenal to i suppose Pummell Lincoln in any other game. Arsenal are in this strange situation at the moment. Yes, theyre favourites but lincoln have done all the preparation, its been perfect. No one thought they would do what they did at burnley. It ca ptu res do what they did at burnley. Are you surprised how well chelsea have done this season . No, i am in the surprised, i am surprised with the way they play. Anthony knockaert got the Brighton Party going, as they beat derby 3 0, as the seagulls moved level on points with newcastle, at the top of the championship. Derby have slipped to ten points, off the play offs. This is what i am talking about, how about this for goal of the week . Hibs are ten points clear of their rivals. Bang, there it is, top corner but he was sent off later for a second booking when he tried a maradonna hands style goal that obviously wasnt allowed. The six nations title is englands for the taking today, thanks to wales. Back after two defeats, and george north was unstoppable, scoring 2 of 3 welsh tries, and after holding off an ireland fightback, Jamie Roberts rounded off the win late in the second half, making the most of some tired irish defending to make it 22 9 in the end in cardiff. We knew there was going to be reaction and against one of the best sides in world rugby you have to play like that with and without the ball. Theres a lot of hurt in the camp over the last couple of weeks, iam camp over the last couple of weeks, i am delighted and proud of the players, they deserve that. Theyve taken a lot of stick, the coaches and the players alike. We beat a very good irish side today and i thought we beat them emphatically, as well. France play italy in the first of todays six nations games and after that attention turns to the calcutta cup. Thanks to that wales win, england could pick up the title with victory, while scotland can go top, and claim pole position, if they can get a first win at twickenham, in over 30 years. For england, owen farrell remains a doubt, after apparently falling over the coachs small dog. England have up to an hour before kick off to finalise their team, for what both coaches know, will be a hard fought game. Were just concentrating on ourselves. Weve had a great two week preparation, we had a fantastic week at oxford, trained well. Weve had two good days of training here. Were really well prepared, were looking forward to playing an historic calcutta cup. The last time lincoln city played arsenal in a competitive fixture they won 1 0. That was 102 years ago, but this afternoon theyll be hoping history can repeat itself. Its a momentous day for the non league side and the 9,000 fans wholl make the journey down to the Emirates Stadium with them, on 53 coaches and even a specially arranged train. One of those making the trip will be bob dorrian, the clubs chairman. Well be speaking to him in a moment, but first lets hear from some of the clubs young fans. People around lincoln are really excited for the quarter finals against arsenal. Its really inspired me because lincoln have made everybody try harder and work harder because you know you can do that well. If we got through to the semifinal it is would be amazing to go to wembley. I think lincoln could do well if they scored, and if they won it will be amazing. do well if they scored, and if they won it will be amazing. I think arsenal need to watch out for matt reed and arnold. I think reid and arnold will be really quick. reed and arnold. I think reid and arnold will be really quick. I am a bit worried of what sanchez and ozil can do. I want to play for lincoln when i am older. Watching this fa cup has been amazing. Its inspired me. My prodiction is 21 to lincoln. 20 me. My prodiction is 21 to lincoln. 2 0 lincoln. Me. My prodiction is 21 to lincoln. 20 lincoln. 10 lincoln. 21 to lincoln. You can do it in the quarter finals against arsenal. Lincoln. You can do it in the quarterfinals against arsenal. Good luck, lincoln. I hope you win against arsenal. I hope you are going to be amazing. We can do this thats the team talk done. The confidence is catching from the players. Fantastic. Listening to thatis players. Fantastic. Listening to that is the chairman of lincoln city. We can talk to him now on the phone. Good morning, bob. A special morning. Wondering where you are and whats been the Morning Routine so far . Well, i have been up since about 7. 30 am, had my breakfast and getting my case packed for the weekend, so a fairly busy start so far, and obviously the day ahead, who knows what that will bring. You sound very calm, did you get any sleep . A little bit restless last night. But generally speaking it was a reasonable nights sleep, yes. Bob, its sally here. I am wondering, its been such a brilliant experience so far, is there anything that you are doing, anything perhaps, any superstitions, anything perhaps, any superstitions, anything you have consistently done through this run you might be also be doing today to keep the luck going . Me personally, for most of the games this season i wear a pair of red socks. It seems to be working so far. I shall have my red socks on again today. Love that. Bob, its charlie here. For those who are not familiar with the team, could you introduce us to one or two of the personalities, i am introduce us to one or two of the personalities, iam interested in nicknames, character traits, that kind of thing. Well, i dont think any of the players have really got any of the players have really got any outstanding nicknames. Obviously, our Centre Forward matt reed, who is a big lad, i understand he has one or two nicknames in the dressing room, perhaps it wouldnt be right to mention on air. Yeah, theyre all great players. Theyre a fantastic set of lads. They have gelled extremely well as a team this season, as we have all seen. Great, absolutely great set of lads. Its probably the first and only time in history that you will be studying videos of Bayern Munich who played arsenal last and showed how to beat them. Yeah, danny and nicky have watched a number of videos of arsenal recently and obviously two of their recent games have been against Bayern Munich, so i know danny and nicky have been getting a lot of information from those videos and its telling actually, we understand that there are more tickets sold for the lincoln city game than for the Bayern Munich game earlier. That says a lot about lincoln city, i guess. Bob, you mentioned danny and nicky, how important has dan been to you . They have been absolutely phenomenal. As you know, they came into the club at the beginning of this season from part time non league and what theyve achieved at lincoln city is truly, truly amazing. In such a short space of time. Theyre a Com Plete Short Space of time. Theyre a complete phenomenon. Those two boys are going to go a long, long way in professional football in this country. 0h, professional football in this country. Oh, i like that good luck, bob and the rest of you. Keep those red socks on. He sounded very calm and composed. Maybe thats why theyve gone so far. Mike, thank you very much. Today the chancellor is facing more criticism over his decision to raise income tax for the Self Employed. Former chancellor lord lamont has called the move a rookie error. We can talk to paul lewis. Are there winners and losers . There are, people focus on the losers, the losers tend to be better paid, theyre barristers, doctors, plumbers, journalists like me, we will pay more National Insurance because the 9 tax of National Insurance we pay will go up to ten and then 11 . To off set that a flat rate is being scrapped. It depends where the balance is. Most people who do currently are Self Employed will either pay no more, or will pay less. Anyone with an income below £16,000 will pay less when these policies are fully enforced. Thats not much money. But most, most Self Employed people, actually have profits below £16250. The politics side, theresa may was making much, they were accused of breaking a pledge, you are aware of this argument. The counterargumentment was they wanted to level things between employed and Self Employed people. Thats right. If you are an employee, this National Insurance tax is 12 of your earnings between two limits. If you are employed and instead of 12 , if you are Self Employed, its 9 . So what Philip Hammond was trying to raise that, approaching the 12 . For that money, for that 9 or 10 , Self Employed get pretty much the same benefits, the only thing they dont get thats significant is unemployment benefit, jobseekers allowa nce unemployment benefit, jobseekers allowance as it is now. Thats the big one they dont get, but they get maternity allowance, but they dont get paternity. So there are a few differences. But certainly not enough to justify that big gap between Self Employed and employed. You mentioned in yourfirst between Self Employed and employed. You mentioned in your first answer about those who are likely to lose the most and often its the case i think that the suggestion is that its those who are on the lowest Self Employed and the lowest income are likely to be hit the most. Thats slightly difficult, the people who lose the most from the change Philip Hammond announced are the better paid, people earning more than £40,000, there is a group earning less than £6,000, they are about a Million People nearly. They can make up their National Insurance record by buying extra contributions because they dont pay them automatically. If they want to buy them it costs about £150 a year. But from next april that price will more than quadruple to £740 a year. If they have a gap in their record they wa nt to they have a gap in their record they want to make up and they earn below £6,000, their contributions will go up £6,000, their contributions will go up hugely and they are potentially big losers. Paul, thank you very much. More with paul on money box at midday today on radio 4. Our main stories the olympics Cyclistjess Varnish Has told the bbc that the entire board of British Cycling must go after a Draft Independent report criticises the leadership of the organisation. The United Nations says the world is facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since 1945 with more than 20 Million People in yemen, somalia, south sudan and nigeria at risk of famine. Also coming up, a syrian chef who lost his restaurants in the war launched a Pop Up Restaurant in london last night. We were there for the opening. And to hear his extraordinary story. Lets look at the weather. How is it for the weekend, louise . Glorious for some of us. Look at london a few moments ago, its going to bea london a few moments ago, its going to be a mild, beautiful spring like today. Not for all, to be a mild, beautiful spring like today. Not forall, unfortunately. Across the highlands its cloudy and showery rain. But it will improve here. You will get sunshine in the far north of scotland. This Weather Front will weaken off, Just A Band Of Cloud and rain for many. It means that we will gradually see an improving picture in scotland. At the moment rain around. Drizzly bits and pieces into Northern Ireland. The isle of man and north wales, as well. A lot of cloud generally but already in the london area and down through kent, i have been showing photographs this morning, of a beautiful sunrise. We might get to see the cloud break up more and the Sunshine Push across the south coast and south wales and the south coast and south wales and the midlands and east anglia and hopefully not a bad day. Even if you dont have the sunshine its going to be mild with temperatures around 13 or 14, we could see 17 in the london area. Not too bad in the far north of scotland. I am sure lincoln city fans wont care what the weather is doing this afternoon but its going to be perfect for you, a little bit of sunshine and pleasant, as well. For the six nations, light winds, perfect kicking game. Some decent weather. The same conditions in twickenham as in rome. Tonight a lot of cloud around and more showery outbreaks of rain initially. Some poor visibility, coastal and hill fog. Then towards the end of the night another Weather Front comes m, night another Weather Front comes in, almost bumps into the Weather Front ahead of it and that means is these two systems will merge together, theres going to be rain tomorrow. What a difference a day makes, particularly in the south east where it could stay grey and wet all day. Gradually brightening up from the west. For Northern Ireland and western scotland, wales and South West England into the afternoon some sunshine. A few isolated showers but not too bad here. But miserable across the south east and generally north sea coasts and temperatures will be way down on today. Enjoy. Back to you two. Picture the scene, you are at the School Picking up the kids and you are on the phone texting, ignoring the child . Does that happen one head teacher says so. It happens a lot. One school has decided enough is enough and is asking mums and dads to greet their child with a smile, not a mobile. We will talk about this ina not a mobile. We will talk about this in a moment. First, lates hear what parents had to say. I think its appropriate, yes. When they come to pick their kids up from school, they should be here to do that and to talk to them about their day, not to be chatting on their phones. I dont know what the big fuss is about, really. Its a bit daft, really, innit . I dont see many here doing it, but i should imagine there are a lot of schools that do do it. When you are with children i think its better you keep your phone away. It doesnt come to mind, pulling your phone out at school time anyway. Werejoined by parenting coach anita cleare and Digital Marketing and Technology Expert dan sodergren. Morning to you both. How damaging is iti morning to you both. How damaging is it i suppose i am going to say the word, how bad is it when a kid comes out of school for a parent to not be paying attention . The problem is the amount of space technologys taking. Its ok every now and then to not Pay Attention to your children. They dont need 100 . But if you are actually never paying attention, theyre not learning essential skills, not learning talking skills, conversations, theyre not getting that sense of specialness to you if you are saying whatevers going on on the phone is more important about your day. So it damages relationships and thats important. If this head teacher is observing whats going on, he is only interested in the welfare of the kids, he is not making this up. He is thinking somethings changing. Absolutely. I think this signifies exactly how much family life is being invaded by technology. We are finding is that you look at a family home and you will have individuals each interacting with a screen, a separate device and not actually talking to each other and that is having an impact on relationships, on Childrens Development and how they feel about themselves, as well. Dan, is technology taking over . Yes, i suppose mobiles are pervasive, they are pretty much taking over, Something Like depending on the demographic between 70 and 92 of people have a smartphone. Its more what we do with them. Lets not throw the baby out with the bath water here, when we pick up children and doing things like this you might be taking too many foet yeses photos, as long as you are present and digitally mindful. What does that mean . Being conscious of what you are doing on your digital device, if you are at a party and checking it, and if you are with your daughter, hello ifi checking it, and if you are with your daughter, hello if i am not checking my phone, its going to damage our relationship. If you are taking photos in a moment and not in the moment, because we take trillions of photos, if you add up all the photos taken on social media and 90 are done through a smartphone, if you printed them it would be enough to get to the moon and back. This is daily. Whose how many are taken. Thats about living in the moment. Being aware of whats going on at the time. The other part of this is that presumably so many pa rents of this is that presumably so many parents will have had a conversation with their children, will you get off that mobile phone. It robs you off that mobile phone. It robs you of the right, if you are doing it yourself and at a moment when your child wants to share something with you, theyre child wants to share something with you, they re right child wants to share something with you, theyre right to turn around and say look at you. Absolutely. Teenagers especially are the first people to spot if you are being hypocritical about something. This isafamily hypocritical about something. This is a family issue. Its not, parents say to me how do i draw lines around technology, and stop children using it too much . Its a family issue. How do you stop using it so much as afamily how do you stop using it so much as a family together. Thats about things like having tech free spaces in the house or tech free times of the day. Putting the phone in another room when you are talking to children, so that the whole family are obeying rules, not us saying to children dont use it because i say dont do it. You know what, its so difficult. It is really hard, its a good idea, i hear everything you are saying. It makes brilliant sense. But its just so hard. This saying. It makes brilliant sense. But itsjust so hard. This is something you are navigating. This is your world. Technology is your world and you mentioned your daughter its ironic for me, because itrain daughter its ironic for me, because i train companies, its ironic to say not do it. 92 of us will not let our mobile phone be more than three metres away from us, thats scary. They disrupt our lives and even our sleep which is really bad for us. However, lets not take away the positive. You can be learning how to start your own business with a phone, you could be doing things on e commerce, creating stuff. Lets not take away the negative. Theyre tremendously Powerful Pieceses of technology we can tang advantage with. I can even push it furtherf you are not by yourself, if you are not alone, dont take out your phone. It actually affects all our lives. Thats a really good idea. Mentally, if someones talking to to you it is rude to start looking at something else. If you are meeting someone for coffee, phone on the table. Think about it tonight, be more conscious, more digitally mindful. There you go. Thank you very much. Coming up before the end of the programme, scotland and england go head to head in the six nations today we will be asking mike if england can continue their unbeaten run . Headlines are on the way. Hello this is breakfast, with Charlie Stayt and sally nugent. The crisis in British Cycling olympic Cyclistjess Varnish Has told the bbc that the entire board must go. A Draft Independent report leaked to the daily mail criticises what it calls the dysfunctional and inept leadership of the organisation. For me all i want is the truth to be out there, because its the truth and thats what people should know. Good morning its saturday the 11th of march. The United Nations warns that the world faces its largest humanitarian crisis since 1945, as millions of people face starvation and famine in parts of africa
