A warm welcome to the programme. We begin in poland, where president andrzej duda, appears to be edging towards a narrow victory in the second round of the polish president ial election. Exit polls have predicted that hell take 51 of the vote to beat his rival, the centre right mayor of warsaw, rafau chaskovski. From warsaw, adam easton reports. It was the closest president ial election since the fall of communism more than 30 years ago. According to the exit poll, president duda won by the slimmest of margins. Chanting andrzej duda speaking to their supporters, both candidates claimed victory. Mr duda said he was happy with what he called his exit poll win. Translation i want to make it clear, im happy about this victory. For now, yeah, its only an exit poll but looking at the past results, as you all saw, its grown in my favour. Cheering and applause. He ran an energetic but also divisive campaign. A socially conservative roman catholic, he presented himself as a defender of traditional polish families. He offended many when he said lgbtq campaigners were promoting an ideology that was more harmful than communism. His opponent, rafal trzaskowski, said he would defend minorities. He pledged to use the president s power of veto to block the governments changes to the judiciary which the eu has criticised for undermining the rule of law. Mr trzaskowski said he was convinced that when all votes were counted, he would emerge victorious. Translation listen, we said it would be close and it is close but im absolutely certain that we will win. Chanting rafal so were going to have to wait until the official count on monday or maybe even tuesday before we know who will be the next president of poland. Adam easton, bbc news, warsaw. Ill be getting the latest from warsaw in a few minutes. That will be for more detail on how that election outcome is looking. The gunman who pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder in last years terrorist attacks on two mosques in christchurch, new zealand, has sacked his lawyers ahead of next months sentencing. The hearing will last at least three days and Brenton Tarrant will now represent himself. Simon atkinson is following the story from sydney. Simon, just talk us through how this will work and to what extent he will be allowed to make his case. 50, the sentencing begins on the 24th of august and as most sentencing hearings, what we will expect is the bulk of the case being given over to the impact statements of the victims and the statements of fa ct victims and the statements of fact from the prosecutors. Then what we would normally get is the defendants lawyers giving mitigation and that is when Brenton Tarrant would get his moment in court, if you like. Its obviously a very difficult situation for thejudge in its obviously a very difficult situation for the judge in this case. There is a realfear that he is going to use his platform to set up some of his right wing views and ideologies, and thejudge will be wing views and ideologies, and the judge will be very keen to stop that. I think wondering they definitely want to avoid is the case that we had in norway in 2012 with Anders Brevik who had an hour before his court trial to set up a hate field manifesto, and 110 0118 hate field manifesto, and no onein hate field manifesto, and no one in new zealand want that to happen. It will be interesting to see what happens but the key point, sally, is that the media in new zealand have decided long before this sentencing date was set, in fa ct before sentencing date was set, in fact before it looks like the case was going to go to trial, that there would be very limited in what they could report on Brenton Tarrant saying because they didnt want the trial to become a platform for his views. For families of his victims, how have they responded to the news . Ive spoken to a couple of them today, they are not thrilled it is fairto today, they are not thrilled it is fair to say. I think this is the government, the terrorists using his opportunity to keep himself relevant, to keep himself relevant, to keep himself in the news. It is a stressful time for them in the lead up to the sentencing when they are going to be giving to they are going to be giving to the court the impact of what happened on the 15th of march 2019 and the impact on their lives since then. They are upset but i think they are hopeful that thejudge in upset but i think they are hopeful that the judge in this case will keep control that he wont get given the chance to go on and on, and will be pared back if he does start to lay out any ideologies. Simon atkinson, thank you. A day after disneyworld reopened, the state of florida has registered a record 15,300 new coronavirus cases in a single day. But we also want to do it and make sure our kids will be as safe as possible, so were not going to be rushed into this. With a growing health crisis, a divided nation and a president ial election looming, the politics of dealing with covid 19 has never been more intense. Peter bowes, bbc news, florida. Here in the uk, the deaths of another 21 people whod tested positive for covid 19 have been announced taking the total to 44,819. The approach to Face Coverings has shifted considerably since the early days of the pandemic in england theres an ongoing debate about whther they should be made compulsory in shops. Heres our medical correspondent fergus walsh. At the height of the epidemic here in april, the official view was that Face Coverings were of little benefit, and might encourage a false sense of security and make people less likely to wash their hands or socially distance, and could lead to a shortage of surgical masks for healthcare workers. But since then, the evidence has shifted, and although not definitive, more studies suggest that they can limit the spread of the virus and perhaps help prevent asymptomatic transmission where people infected unwittingly pass on the virus. There is also emerging evidence that the virus can remain airborne in tiny particles suspended in the air. The percentage of people who say they wear a face mask in public has risen substantially in the uk, and now stands at 36 . But thats well behind other ha rd hit European Countries like italy and spain where it is over 80 , and in france, 78 . But it is above australia, where it is just 20 . One of the biggest sceptics on face masks, president trump, has been photographed wearing one in public for the first time, and on friday, borisjohnson was pictured in his constituency wearing a face mask. They say a picture paints a thousand words. Perhaps the image of World Leaders wearing a face mask will encourage more of us to put on one of these when out in public. This is bbc world news, the latest headlines polands incumbent president andrzej duda appears to be edging towards a narrow victory in a crucial election which could shape his countries future relationship countrys future relationship with europe. Lets go live to warsaw and speak to estera flieger, shes a freelance journalist. It has been extremely close and i understand that voter turnout as well has been very high. Talk us through the implications of this result. As you said, turnout is really impressive. Now it is 65 so it is still the middle of Holiday Season is still the middle of Holiday Season and people are tired after lockdown so they just wa nt to after lockdown so they just want to go for a holiday but people are still being mobilised and 65 decided to go and vote and it was an important question after the first round, if turnout would still be high and yes, it was. Why do you think the president got the edge if he doesnt win this election . It is still the powerful party in poland so there is still a number of people who vote for this party and it is difficult to find an answer. But i think that duda still has the biggest number of people who will always vote for him. An extremely close result, however, so what does that mean Going Forward in terms of 7 is it divided7 will he be able to lead a government and all of poland7 lead a government and all of poland . If you see the results you see the country is falling into two parts. There are difficult days, weeks even months ahead of us because emotions are huge. It looks like it is polish polish war. So president duda said yesterday after the results we re yesterday after the results were presented that he wants us to respect each other and end this war but his his credulity is ata this war but his his credulity is at a low level. It is the most Brutal Campaign i remember asa most Brutal Campaign i remember as a conscious observer. It was on Public Television which made propaganda and anti lgbt discourse. So difficult time ahead of us here in poland because there are two groups now. 50 for trzaskowski and 50 for duda so we must find something in common. A very big responsibility for the president. And, briefly, do you think trzaskowski will challenge this result . He can, cant he7 challenge this result . He can, cant he . I dont know but even trzaskowski will lose, he has a great position to fight in the next election so his Political Capital is still good. Thank you for your time. An interesting outcome therein poland and of course we have a lot more detail on our website for you on that. Fire crews have been battling a massive fire on a navy warship docked in san diego. 17 sailors and four civilians have been sent to the hospital for their injuries. Alanna petroff has the story. There arrived after getting a call at eight a. M. There was an initial explosion and then a massive fire. Specialfire boats were brought in with Water Cannons to control the blaze. It certainly looks bad but it could have been much worse if the fire had started lower in the fire had started lower in the ship. Right now i think they have roughly 1 the ship. Right now i think they have roughly1 million gallons of fuel well below where any heat source is and, again, that was the priority all day to make sure that that wasnt not affected. About 160 sailors were on board the uss bonhomme richard. All are now accounted for. Normally this ship carries a crew of 1000. A Navy Spokesman said officials are looking into the cause of the fire but there is no immediate evidence of foul play. The mongolian annual traditional Sports Festival is taking place without a Live Audience for the first time in 800 years. Mongolia has had limited deaths but continues to enforce a strict border control. In colourful traditional garb these wrestling competitors enter, arms held aloft as they perform a dance before the competition gets under way. But this years annual naadam sporting festival in mongolia is different. Normally tens of thousands of spectators come to see an event considered by some to be more important than the olympics. But for the first time in hundreds of years, the general public is barred from attending due to covid 19. As some of the archery competitors wore face masks and shields to protect against the virus, the public were encouraged to watch the festival on television. The child jockey horse race for children as young as five years old was broadcast for viewers. Hundreds of horses gallop across the open plains with their young riders tightly holding on. Children apparently had their temperatures ta ken to screen for infections. The two day festival held on a ranch outside the capital allowed only a handful of guests to witness the event, including top politicians. Outside the venue, all was quiet as the decision left some fans disappointed and frustrated. Translation because of the virus, this years naadam feels boring and there is nothing to watch on tv. Most of the country is calm. I think everyone is just staying at home. Translation we cant watch the horse racing. The roads are blocked and its only accessible to the rich people and they want to close the road this morning. I dont know what the Opening Ceremony looked like. This was it.
