Country and is causing tremendous anger and division and pain. Also in the programme the State Capitols across america are on high alert, the fbi is warning there are further armed protests to come. Well speak to a state representative in michigan where theyve lived with these threats for months. And what is the financial cost to donald trump of last weeks riot . There are signs the banks and his biggest sponsors are turning away. Hello, im katty kay in washington. Christian fraser is in london. The effort to hold those responsible for last weeks capitol riots is playing out on two fronts theres the political, with democrats pushing forward on impeachment. More on that in a few minutes. And then theres the criminal. And Law Enforcement is not holding back. In the last hour, the acting us attorney for the District Of Columbia said officials are looking at significant sedition and conspiracy charges for those involved. Michael sherwin says the capitol is a crime scene and predicts there could be hundreds of charges. The range of criminal conduct is really, again, unmatched in any type of scenario that weve seen we are looking at everything from simple trespass to theft of mail to theft of digital devices within the capital to assault and local officers, both inside and outside the capitol to the theft of potential National Security or defence information to felony murder. Before that press conference, the Washington Post was reporting that its seen an internal fbi memo that was filed tuesday the day before the violence. It says protestors were plotting war on the capitol. The memo points to an internet thread which talked of breaking down the doors of congress, advocating violence and ends with the quote we get our president , or we die. That memo contradicts a statement from the head of the Fbis Washington Field Office on friday that there was no prior warnings of the attack. Across america, State Capitols in all 50 states are on high alert, after the fbi warned of further armed protests in the days ahead. The Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer called today for those involved in the riot to be placed on the no fly list. In a moment, well talk to a Democratic State senator from michigan but first lets speak to Elizabeth Neumann who was a former chief of staff for the Trump Administration at the department of Homeland Security. I was listening to that press conference from the department of justice and the fbi and it was pretty stunning. They are basically saying weve never seen this kind of investigation before. There is a huge amount of evidence they are going through and a long list of charges as we heard there that they are going to carry out. They have been accused of acting too slowly in the early days after the attack on capitol hill. Do you think they are now going to launch a massive investigation and carry out charges in light of the attack . Iam i am heartened by what we heard today about the fact they put out a bulletin yesterday alerting the country that this threat continues. Those are the types of things that im used to seeing when we have an incident. Im still puzzled how we went so long without having even a press c0 nfe re nce went so long without having even a press conference for anybody from anybody in the executive branch explaining what happened. The day of the incident, the only official that came out and did what you are used to seeing when we have incidents like this was the mayor of the District Of Columbia, so its a step in trying to get back on the right direction. There are serious questions that will need to be a nswered questions that will need to be answered once we get through this heightened threat period of how no warning was given for the january six attack. Its amazing, its nearly a week since the attack and this is the first time weve heard from officials and we didnt even hear from the head from officials and we didnt even hearfrom the head of from officials and we didnt even hear from the head of those organisations, they sent out deputies to talk to the press. They didnt answer during the press conference, the key question about why they didnt pick this up before and how this was allowed to happen. Do you think well get to those questions . Will we get a more thorough response to that . questions . Will we get a more thorough response to that . I think the investigation it needs to happen. Once we get through the heightened threat period, there are so heightened threat period, there are so many breakdowns on the other side and the protocols and the Standard Operating Procedures that have been developed since 9 11, there something for the National Response plan that literally lays out a playbook of how you would handle incident communication, something simple like coordinated phone calls within one hour of the incident and deciding who the spokesperson is and making sure there is a press call or press c0 nfe re nce making sure there is a press call or press conference set up within the next hour. None of those protocols we re next hour. None of those protocols were followed. You add to it that much more devastating issue of a com plete much more devastating issue of a complete security failure at the capitol. No warning. All of these we re capitol. No warning. All of these were post 9 11 reforms that were supposed to be fixed so for the sake of sending a signal to all our enemies, domestic and foreign, that we are going to protect ourselves, that we do actually have the strongest security in the world, we need to discover what went wrong and make sure we correct it. Full stop in mind of the continued threat and breakdown of protocols, what did you make yesterday of chad wolfe, the acting secretary of Homeland Security walking away from the job on the eve of the fight . Hes in charge of the secret sentence that will leave during the inauguration. Who is manning the tiller . Its my understanding that the issue there was one of legality associated with his tenure so its going to be. It sounds like it really wasnt his decision to walk away as much as his nomination was no legally allowed to continue operating as acting secretary saw more than anything its just yet another example of the chaos of the Trump Administration. Now we have the sixth secretary in four years. Pete gaynor is a good man, he is qualified to be acting secretary, so im sure he will carry out his duties well but its more challenges for the men and women at the department of Homeland Security who have already demonstrated that something went awry and i dont want to place blame here, its probably ata to place blame here, its probably at a leadership level, but something went awry and they were not able to perform their duties last week so this is not a good time to have more churn, a new administration can hopefully establish normalcy and people can go back to doing those protocols they know how to do. Very briefly, can i ask you, the acting department ofjustice said there will be felony cases tie to sedition. Explain what that means. Seditious conspiracy, my understanding that is not a charge thatis understanding that is not a charge that is brought up very often. I was pleased to hear they were willing to do that but the basic idea is that two or more people that have collaborated to undermine or overthrow the government so that is what happened, but it will be interesting who they choose to target for that and how many there where. Will they include those that might have incited the violence at the president s rally before they stormed the capitol . Or are they targeting some of the very militant looking people that when they went m, looking people that when they went in, they clearly knew what they were doing, they were clearly prepared and put up a pretty good fight. Im continuing to watch and see how they are going to use that but im glad they are calling it out and they are not being fearful of reprisal from trump perhaps. This is the right thing we need to put a clear label on this, this was terrorism, this was sedition, this was an insurrection, so nobody of goodwill happens to accidentally show up at a protest next week for inauguration. If you are going to one of the supposed protests, you need to realise that you are associating yourself with people that want to commit sedition and acts of terrorism. Werejoined by sylvia santana. She is a Democratic State senator from michigan who this week began wearing a bullet proof vest to work. We already see the pictures in washington, 15,000 National Guard troops will be on standby for the inauguration. We got seven foot non scalable fences around federal buildings, but the concern i detect is for state capitals and four states that right now during this covid crisis are under resourced to deal with it. Whats the situation like in michigan . I would have to say this situation did not start overnight. Obviously back in april, we had several individuals, home grown terrorists within a state capitals with ar15s uber intimidating legislators if they did the will of the people. If that was a precursor to what we saw in our us estate State Capitol, those threats are concerning for all of us here in michigan as well so im definitely giving a lot of support to our Michigan State police in addition to our State Capitol police who are taking these threats seriously. Is it true you came to work this week in a kevlar vest . do have it located under my desk on the Senate Chamber flaws and i will be putting that on but as we know from the us State Capitol situation, there were bombs within the building so we there were bombs within the building so we have to be on high alert and aware of whats going on. I should not have conversations with my collea g u es not have conversations with my colleagues about how we should be protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof vests. Protecting ourselves by putting on bullet proof vests. We should essentially be doing the work of the people we represent across michigan. What do you make about the difference of the treatment with black lives matter protesters in michigan last summer and the mob that attacked the capital last week . I think definitely you saw a level of security that was evident with black lives matter, with the peaceful protests, but as we seen this past week with these Trump Supporters who came into the us capitol and stormed it, people whose lives have been lost, there was not the same level of security at that particular event, insurrection i will call it, that we saw this past week. We cant treat people differently across the board when it comes to protests but that was clearly not a protest, that was home grown terrorists who are looking to take over the us capitol. Thank you forjoining us, senator. The die is cast for President Trump to become the first us president to ever be impeached twice. Experts say its a matter of time. The democrats have been spent their day making the case that he is a danger to the nation, and must be removed from office. Republicans have hedged a bit. They say yes, joe biden won the presidency. But theyve failed to acknowledge that the vote was fair and legal. President trump decided the best course of action at least for today was to leave town. Hes been visiting the border wall, near alamo in texas. Earlier, he said his speech last week was totally acceptable. In texas, he again showed no remorse, returning to some familiar lines, and dismissing the threat of being removed via the 25th amendment. Free speech is under assault like never before. The 25th amendment is of zero risk to me, but will come back to hauntjoe biden and the biden administration. As the expression goes, be careful what you wish for. The impeachment hoax is a continuation of the greatest and most vicious witch in the history of oui most vicious witch in the history of our country and is causing tremendous anger and division and pain, fargreaterthan tremendous anger and division and pain, far greater than most people will ever understand. Were joined now by anita kumar, the White House Correspondent for politico. Between what President Trump said before he left for texas, that his speech was totally appropriate last week at that rally on wednesday before the riot at the capitol, and what he said there about the hoax and impeachment effort, how does what President Trump said today, the first time weve heard from him in public since the attack on the capitol, affects the political side of this . Well, its not unexpected what he said. Weve been hearing from inside the white house that he is upset at the blame that he is being sent his way. He doesnt understand being impeached for a second time and is equating this to the two other investigations he mentioned, hes calling it a hoax, the russian investigation, and also his first impeachment. I think the more he talks and doesnt take any responsibility, the more he is removed from other republicans. Ive heard from so many people that have supported him in 2016 and 2020, helped get him elected, worked for him, that have stood by him for four yea rs, him, that have stood by him for four years, that are done with him now, that feel like he has ruined those four years in all that he has accomplished by what has happened in the last week so i think you are going to see a greater divide in the republican party. What might inform how republicans think ahead of this vote tomorrow is the reporting weve had on the conversation that minority leader Kevin Mccarthy had with the president. Let me show you some transcripts from that conversation. The president was insistent that antifa was involved in the riot. Mccarthy said, its not antifa, its maga, i was there. Then they talked about the election, stopping the steel, and Kevin Mccarthy said, just stop it, its over. Interrupted him, infact. He said the election is over. You get the impression the president is still deluded about what happened on wednesday and doesnt accept it. Exactly right. That conversation you just alluded to is very telling. Kevin mccarthy has been one of President Trumps biggest supporters. They talk often. Hes a close confidant so the fact that he is pushing back, mccarthy is pushing back on what trump said, the fact that senator Lindsey Graham pushing back on what trump has said, is very telling. These are his closest allies on capitol hill, telling him just stop it. Its notjust what happened last week, its that many of them have been tired of hearing for two months President Trump saying that he still won the election, that he didnt lose, that he needs to fight it. They have said, you can go through those legal processes , said, you can go through those legal processes, go through the lawsuits and recounts, but once thats over, its time to move on. From what im hearing inside the white house for the last week, even after the protests, he hasnt moved on, he still continued to talk about the election and continuing to be very angry about it and wishes there was some way to turn that around so he hasnt taken that advice from Kevin Mccarthy or others to stop talking about this and stop pushing on this. Thank you very much. A lot of people will see hypocrisy on the part of the republicans. Who remembers 2012, the benghazi siege of the american compound and the excitement of the republicans, how animated they wear. They hold Hillary Clinton in front of congressional enquiries, wanted her fired, and now presented with similar evidence, a president who was borderline enthusiastic about the riot, a president who refused to send the National Guardian, who ignored the calls from congressional leaders who were pleading for him to intervene, they want to look the other way. No surprise today, Hillary Clinton is tweeting. Yeah, there is a realfeeling amongst democrats that republicans cannot talk about unity unless they are prepared to say unambiguously there was no fraud in the election, joe biden won the election, there is no question of a hoax and thats what democrats. They are certainly not hearing it from President Trump but they say they are not hearing it from enough republicans either. There is an exchange between congressmanjim there is an exchange between congressman jim jordan from the republicans and democrat on the rules committee. Lets have a quick listen to that because it gets to the ambivalence. No, we cant bring you that unfortunately butjim jordan said joe biden won, but the election was still. Its that but. That was the fuel on the flames of the attack at the capitol. Those repeated assertions that the election was fraudulent. Thats what caused all of this. For those watching on bbc world news, well be right back. The home secretary said the lockdown measures in england were clear and insisted they were working in the fight against the spread of coronavirus. Speaking at the governments press conference, she also reinforced the governments stay at home message. As of today, 2,431,648 people have been vaccinated across the united kingdom. Today, 45,533 people have tested positive for coronavirus. As of the 10th of january, 35,075 people are currently in hospital with coronavirus. Thats an increase of 22 from this time last week. Sadly, of those who have tested positive for coronavirus across all settings, 83,203 people have died. 1243 fatalities were reported yesterday. With just a week of President Trumps presidency left, theres a growing a list of companies that no longer want to do business with him. The art of the deal no more, one might say. We are told Deutsche Bank is severing ties with the trump organisation. The company lent him money when no one else would touch him. Other big businesses have pulled their support, but it seems a decision by the us pga to pull their biggest tournament from the trump property at bedminster newjersey next year, has stung the president the most. In the tech world, twitter and facebook have banned the president indefinitely, at t has suspended Campaign Contributions and the world of Higher Education is weighing in as well. Two univeristies have announced they have rescinded honorary degrees they had previously awarded to mr trump. Were joined now by investigative journalist zach everson, who has covered extensively the finances of the trump organisation. Where do you think financially this is going to hurt him most . The big issueis is going to hurt him most . The big issue is Deutsche Bank. He owes them about 340 million and a lot of that is backed up with his own money so if he doesnt have the money to pay them back or refinance with them hes going to be in trouble. They said no new business, how will they interpret existing loans . When you look online at the moment, on social media, there are sharing who the top pack donors are, those contributing to republican and mr Trumps Campaign so there is clearly Corporate Risk for these companies which they recognise. Absolutely. Thats always existed to a certain amount. These countries were figuring out risk versus reward. T mobile went from spending almost not any on Trump Properties to putting up executives there when they needed government approval. When the government approved the merger, the new ceo went ahead and said company shouldnt kowtow to the present anymore. Whats happened with the riots has not changed the maths. Deutsche bank might hurt him financially, which will hurt him personally . Clearly the golf. That would be like me calling my mum after this and hearing that she watched it for a minute and change the channel. His course in scotland and one in miami, the new one would not have reached the status of those but watching golf tournaments on tv is an infomercial for the course. What about the fact donald trump basically ran for president to improve the trump brand around the world and yet actually, especially in the last week or two, he seems to have done the opposite. Right. Weve seen have done the opposite. Right. Weve seen Companies Backing away from him before. It happened originally when he announced he was running and declared that mexicans were rapists. You saw that restaurants that had deals back out and after cha rlottesville picked deals back out and after charlottesville picked up. The difference now is are saying it out loud and the fact that the capital riots were committed against all americans, but further more, he lost and they dont have the senate any more so all of a sudden these companies that need to be quiet and kowtow to him are emboldened because hes not going to matter as much any more. Thank you very much for joining us. Interesting impact it might have on donald trump. How long that will be sustained, we shall watch closely. We talked about Deutsche Bank walking away. The casino magnate who has died aged 87, he was one of its biggest supporters in the early days of 2016, he bankrolled some of the campaign, paid for some of the inauguration and the payback, the reason we know him worldwide is because the payback was moving the us embassy in israel tojerusalem. A huge figure in conservative duration circles, has been around for a long time, based out of las vegas, very deep contacts, went on board with trump and there are a lot of republican politicians who owe the fact that they won elections to the fact that they won elections to the money that sheldon put into them and he then got the embassy moved. He was a College Dropout and the son ofa cab he was a College Dropout and the son of a cab driver and he died worth 33 billion. Some success story. Hello, for many parts of the country it was colder but sunnier today. The colder air pushed down towards the east of the uk but to the west we never cleared away the cloud and its a battle at the moment and fog the next few days between that colder air and milder the next few days between that colderairand milderair in the next few days between that colder air and milder air in the atla ntic colder air and milder air in the atlantic that is trying to push its way further into the uk. The boundary is that weather front and thats where we are seeing this thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain in Northern Ireland which will develop in wales, the southwest, push towards the midlands and over the irish sea. There may well be more in the way of cloud but its not going to prevent frost. Its going to be a cold night in scotland, northern and england, milder further west. Scotland, northern and england, milderfurther west. In scotland, northern and england, milder further west. In the scotland, northern and england, milderfurther west. In the morning, the risk of freezing rain and ice across North Western scotland and england as that band of rain move slowly in. It gets stuck to the southeast of england. It should stay cloudy but dry in wales and the southwest and more rain for Northern Ireland. Perhaps snow over the hills of scotla nd ireland. Perhaps snow over the hills of scotland later. Certainly cold enoughin of scotland later. Certainly cold enough in scotland and pretty chilly across northern and eastern parts of england but temperatures in. Those weather fronts are moving are not moving very far or racing right away across the uk are pushing that colder air from across the uk are pushing that colder airfrom northern across the uk are pushing that colder air from northern and across the uk are pushing that colder airfrom northern and eastern areas so there will be more sleet and snow falling overnight, mainly across the hills of scotland and into Northern England by thursday. Elsewhere, we are looking at rain. The rain should clear away from Northern Ireland and it should turn dried in western wales on the southwest of england but quite strong winds here. It will be mild, temperatures are live in celsius. Much colder with the wintry weather in scotland and eastern areas. The sleet over the hills will slide away during thursday night and friday looks drier before the next weather system arrives in the north west. Not sure how much sunshine they will be on friday. Probably left with a lot of cloud and then the winds pick up lot of cloud and then the winds pick up in Northern Ireland. It turns rainy here and well see that wetter weather moving into western scotland, some snow over the high ground, still a chilly day for most places, temperatures will be a bit lower on friday. Youre watching bbc news with me, katty kay, in washington. Christian fraser is in london. Our top stories. Donald trump gets out of washington while back in washington, congress discusses removing him from office. Mr trump says the real risk is for the incoming administation. The 25th amendment is of zero risk to me, but will come back to hauntjoe biden and the biden administration. More and more young people find themselves with debilitating covid symptons as the infection rate rises dramatically well investigate why. Also in the programme. Students in chicago returned to school this week for the First Time Since march. But not everyone feels safe to return, including some teachers. Well speak to one of them. Plus, well speak to the man down to just two guesses to figure out the password to access a multi Million Dollar fortune. House democrats are moving quickly towards impeaching donald for a second time. But before that, there is the business of today. In just a few hours, the house will vote on a resolution that calls on Vice President mike pence to invoke the 25th amendment and remove donald trump from power. That doesnt seem likely. In which case, they will begin that impeachment process perhaps as early as tomorrow. The democrats argue that as long as mr trump feels free to repeat his lies, his supporters will continue the fight. The republicans are divided. For some, the events last week were a turning point. A few may vote in favour of impeachmnent. For others who still stand with mr trump, they argue such a measure would only add fuel to the fire. Heres a taste of which each side had to say. We make are asking Vice President pence with this resolution and the cabinet to act with the powers that were wisely put into place by the congress back in 1967. They should meet, they should consider all the circumstances, and they should move to restore order to the United States of america. With that, i yield back to you, mrchairman. Congress needs to stop this, this effort to remove the president from office just one week before he is set to leave. Continued calls to impeach the president or remove him from office by using the 25th amendment i dont think are healthy for our nation. Rushing this resolution to the floor will do nothing to unify or heal the country. Republican jim jordan, who mr trump awarded the medal of freedom yesterday. Lets bring in the bbcs Barbara Plett usher, whos on capitol hill for us. I saw it earlier that liz cheney, the number three republican in the house caucus, said, vote with your conscience tomorrow. What do you think that means . Well, i think it means that republicans are still weighing up how they should weigh up to these efforts to remove mr trump from office, and the impeachment vote. It suggests some people might decide it is the right thing to do. Now no republican lawmakers have publicly said they would vote for impeachment, but some have said mr trump should go. One senator said he would consider articles of impeachment, and us media are reporting that perhaps a dozen republican lawmakers in the house might vote for impeachment something the democrats are trying to get, at least some support so it doesnt look completely partisan. Theres been this other approach, as you are saying, the Top Republican in the house, Kevin Mccarthy, has talked a motion to censor the president or put together a Bipartisan Commission to look into of the attack. But thats too little, too late by most democrats. According to congressional aides who we re according to congressional aides who were also listening to the call in which liz cheney spoke yesterday, this was a call with mr mccarthy and the republican lawmakers, mr mccarthy urged people not to criticise those who might vote for impeachment because he said that would put them in danger. Apparently hes not formally lobbying them not to vote for impeachment. So it suggests a shift at least its quite different in 2019 when the republicans uniformly opposed any movement against mr trump. What about in the senate . Last time around, one republican, mitt romney, in the trial did vote to remove donald trump, but none of the other republicans did. What are you hearing from the senate side this time . Again, no senator has said that they will support a move to impeach mrtrump, but that they will support a move to impeach mr trump, but they have made comments that they feel mr trump we nt comments that they feel mr trump went too far and he should be removed from office. Only a few, 2 3 have said that sort of thing. But that still leaves open the possibility that they might vote to convict if and when and almost certainly will come to trial in the senate. But it dont make it you need two thirds of the senate to convict, and thats the argument thats been used by those who feel mrtrump thats been used by those who feel mr trump should be punished but feel and impeachment effort willjust divide people more. It wont necessarily lead to his conviction, and it will affect joe necessarily lead to his conviction, and it will affectjoe bidens ability to implement his agenda. The attitude certainly in the house is that democratic lawmakers are not only completely appalled at the attack on democracy and Democratic Institutions from last week, but they also felt fearful for their lives. You have a very real sense of emotion and feelings still about what happened last week, and they wa nt what happened last week, and they want to use whatever tool they have to be able to respond as strongly as they can. So they are trying to do this by invoking constitutional authority, but impeachment is the hardest they can go. Barbara, thank you. Daniel goldman served as the democrats majority counsel in the first impeachment inquiry in the house against donald trump. Mrgoldman, thank mr goldman, thank you very much for being with us. Its safe to say that evenif being with us. Its safe to say that even if donald trump is impeach tomorrow, as we expect them to be because the democrats have the vote, that he wont be removed because Mitch Mcconnell says he wont convene the senate at least until after the inauguration. Can we get one thing straight could he reconvene without the unanimous consent of the senate . The minority leader Chuck Schumer held a press co nfe re nce leader Chuck Schumer held a press Conference Today where he stated that the law was passed in 2004 to allow the senate to reconvene on an emergency basis with the only agreement from the majority leader and the minority leader. That was in the aftermath of 911 and they wanted to make sure that they didnt need to make sure that they didnt need to get all 100 senators on board. There is at least a belief from the minority leader they could do that, and im sure there are other ways they would be able to do it. I think it was a well strategized move by senator mcconnell to issue that memo la st senator mcconnell to issue that memo last week to say that he would not convene the senate until 20 january asa convene the senate until 20 january as a way to head off impeachment. But its clearly not working. So it could be done. The charge in the article of impeachment is aggressive, as youd expect it to be in the level of anger. But in the subsequent trial in the senate, there will be some things that we dont know. We dont really know, we would need to hear what esther trumps state of mind was, who knew what the risk to the capital was, and what sort of help mr trump denied on the day. Could you get those things together for the trial in the short Time Available . Presumably if the senate were to allow a subpoena of witnesses, which they did not do in the last impeachment, you would be able to get some access to that information. One person whom i would want to call his dance covino, the head of the Digital Media operation, with whom is supposed to be close with donald trump. The question is, did he know about all the online rumblings about rating the capital and violence that a numberof trump rating the capital and violence that a number of Trump Supporters were planning . Did he know that beforehand planning . Did he know that before hand and, if planning . Did he know that beforehand and, if he did, did he relay that information to donald trump . 0r relay that information to donald trump . Ordid anyone relay that information to donald trump . Or did anyone else relay that information to donald trump . But you raise a very good point, and the question is, what did donald trump know about what was going to transpire . I think whats coming out in the media is that the federal Law Enforcement was aware of real threats of violence. Enforcement was aware of real threats of violence. And didnt adequately prepare for it. Then after the mob came rushing into the capital, they did not do you hear me . We do hear you. Weve got you back. Do carryon. Go ahead. No, i think weve lost it, thats a shame. Daniel goldman. The New York Times is reporting that Mitch Mcconnell, the Senate Majority leader, does believe that donald trump committed impeachable offences, according to this reporting from the New York Times, the Senate Majority leader mcconnell believes the attack on the capital gives republicans a chance to purge donald trump. They are also saying that mr mccarthy has asked collea g u es that mr mccarthy has asked colleagues if you should urge, the acting chief of staff, urge mr trump to resign and is open to a sensor. Thats coming from the New York Times, it would be fascinating if Mitch Mcconnell really believes that mrtrump Mitch Mcconnell really believes that mr trump committed impeachable offences. That could change the makeup of the senate trials, it looks like this will go to a trial at some point. The thing is, how many others feel like that . Because Lindsey Graham, who is been very close to mr trump, on the senate floor after the right said, its been a hell of a ride, but im done. And where is he today . Hes on air force one flying with donald trump down to texas. Thats the problem, the people who have enabled him in the past still think they can change his mood, still think they can change his approach. And they cant do. I think if you have Mitch Mcconnell who seriously comes out and says that mr trump has committed impeachable offences, it might get to the two thirds majority. Trump will have left office by that time a nyways. Still to come they say never write down your passwords but what if it protects 220 million . Well speak to the man who has forgotten how to get his fortune. During the first uk lockdown last march, an 11 year old boy from devon decided to sleep in a tent to raise funds for a local hospice whod looked after his dying neighbour. Nearly a year later, max woosey is still camping in the garden. Hes raised a Staggering Amount of money and his story is now inspiring others. Jon kay reports. Theres lockdown, and then theres this. Whatever the weather, for nearly a year, max has been camping in his garden. Its been wet, cold, muddy itsjust been miserable, really. He wanted to raise £50 for the north devon hospice. Hes now raised more than £100,000. Im pretty impressed with myself, i have to admit but this is also the story of another boy joe berry from cheshire. He, too, loved camping and helping others. He was amazing. He would just spend hours and hours in the garden, even through the middle of winter. He just loved being outside. Joe grew up to join the paras, but last year at the age of 21, he died in afghanistan. When lisa saw maxs story on bbc news, she remembered joes old camping kit. I dont want it to sit in the loft, i would prefer it go to some use and i couldnt think of any better use than to help max. So lisa sent max the sleeping bag that kethoe warm when he was a scout. It reminded me ofjoe, because itsjust something thatjoe typically would have done when he was a similar age. What did you think when you got the sleeping bag . I think i nearly cried to be honest, when i read the note and all of it. I realised people in this world are so loving, so caring, and itsjust so nice. So tonight, joes legacy will be keeping max warm as his charity camp out continues. John kay, bbc news, devon. The uk government is warning that tougher action, including fines, could be brought in if people dont obey the lockdown rules. Coronavirus cases continue to rise here and with this bigger spike, of course, there is a higher percentage of young people becoming infected some of them serious. A 20 year old from cambridgeshire whos spent a week in intensive care says he cant believe young people are in denial about the virus. Jay clack fell ill on 27 december. Within five days, 80 of his lungs has stopped functioning. He even had a goodbye phone call with his family. Thankfully, he is now recovering and he has been speaking tojon ironmongerfrom his hospital bed. Shallow breathing this is jay. Hes 20 years old and suffers with asthma. But just after christmas, he got covid, too. So ive got a headache, shortness of breath, and then i was bedbound. I was calling my dad and sister, like, drenched in sweat. I couldnt move, i couldnt eat. They had to literally physically get me out of bed to go to the toilet because my body was in shock. He was admitted to Hinchingbrooke Hospital with pneumonia on new years eve. From here on upwards was the only working part of my lungs. So the rest of my lungs went into type one respiratory failure. So it was like. For, like, days and thats how it was for days. Ijust could never catch my breath. Ive had the mask on for five hours, and they just swapped me over to this. Jays condition spiralled rapidly, and he was moved to intensive care. His family were told he might not make it. Its difficult. I had two nurses on the side holding my hand, stroking me, going its ok, and another nurse had my phone next to my ear. It was horrible because my dad doesnt really cry, but my dad is like my bestest friend, hes my superhero. And to hear my dad sob down the phone saying, please, just fight one more day, youve got this your bodys so weak that you cant actually say i love you back. Its just. It messes you up. Youve got your parents crying on the phone, you cant move, doctors are rushing around and you understand you might not survive the night. What is going through your head at the moment . You feel so empty and numb, and worthless. And because all you want is. All you want is to cuddle your family for a moment if you are going to pass, as horrible as it is, you want to be able to hold your family and say goodbye, and have that last final moment with them. And i couldnt. And youre a big, strapping lad, you know . At, what, 20 years old . Yeah. Ive lost. I was 19 stone, now im down to 17, and im still dropping. It affects everyone, its notjust the elderly. We need to literally open our eyes and realise how serious this is. We need to open our eyes and realise. Wow, he is so lucky to be recovering, but listen to that breathing. Here in the us schools in chicago have gone back this week for the First Time Since march. Across the country, most schools have been shut throughout the pandemic, affecting up to three million students. Chicago is one of the Biggest School districts, with 350,000 enrolled in its public schools. A lot of families though up to 40 are choosing not to send their children back to the classroom. Lets speak to Chicago Teacher hilario dominguez. Good to have you with us. So youve been out since march, nine months, thats incredible. Why was the decision taken to return now, and how do you feel about it . Quite frankly, its because we have a mayor and a district that we cant trust. Throughout this entire time, theyve missed reps per misrepresented their safety preparations, ignored arbitrators orders and appeared more focused on the mayor and her Political Considerations then our well being, the well being considerations then our well being, the well being of teachers and students. So its infuriating to say the least. But united as a union and a community, weve been fighting and standing tall against the unjust orders the mayor has given. There is a huge debate in the uk as well about schools, and whether children should be in schools, because it has such a profound affect on a childs future, their education and well being. Do you think then, as is pa rt well being. Do you think then, as is part of the debate here in the uk, that teachers should be pushed to the line for the vaccines . They should be priority . the line for the vaccines . They should be priority . I think teachers should be priority . I think teachers should always be a priority. One of theissues should always be a priority. One of the issues that we look at is that we are consistently not. And what were saying is that we want to go back, we want to teach our kids, we know that the best way to teach our kids is in person. However, what we needis kids is in person. However, what we need is safety, equity and trust. And thats what we have not been given by our mayor and our district. We will go back to in Person School when cps can demonstrate that theyve ta ken our when cps can demonstrate that theyve taken our considerations seriously and our concerns. theyve taken our considerations seriously and our concerns. I can hear the anxiety in your voice, because you want to be teaching kids in school. And we know that kids, particularly minority kids and kids from less privileged backgrounds, they are the ones who have really suffered during this pandemic. Theyve not got good internet access, theyve suffered learning problems and are falling behind. So ican hear problems and are falling behind. So i can hear that you want to go back. What is it that the Chicago SchoolDistrict Needs to do in terms of Safety Measures that its not doing at the moment, that would reassure you that its safe to return to teaching in person . So in terms of safety, we are asking for the guidelines to be clear. One of the things weve been asking for is the Positivity Rate to be less than 3 . Right now its a little over 10 , and still climbing. We are also asking the mayor to invest in our neighbourhoods and to give our parents what they need to be able to survive there things like rent abatement, more counsellors, social and emotional support. We know our students, especially our black and brown students, have been facing an enormous amount of trauma throughout this time, and they need the resources to cope with that. Personally this last weekend, i went through an enormous amount of fear with my mum in the hospital battling covid. Shes gotten better now and her partner still remains on a ventilator. But those are the feelings that we are fighting against we dont want our teachers, our students, our children to be facing that going back to school. I hear you. The threat is real and i understand the fear. State safe, best of luck with the schooling, and we hope at some point in the near future you can return. Thank you. Congressman brad schneider, from illinois, became the third democrat to test positive for coronavirus this morning. He was another who spent several hours in a secure location with dozens of other members of congress on wednesday. Let me show you the video, because this is the republican democrat republicans that were in the room. I think i see the minority whip sitting in the chair there, just before the woman in red, adamantly refusing to wear a mask. I am now in strict isolation, says congressman schneider, worried that i have risked my wifes health and angry at the selfishness and arrogance of the anti maskers who put their own contempt and disregard for decency ahead of the health and safety of their colleagues and staff. I am at least the third member, he goes on, from that room paying the price, including congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and Bonnie Watson coleman, who is a 75 year old cancer survivor. All three of them have contracted covid since being in that room. No surprise perhaps that members of congress are pretty angry at the moment. Life, it seems, it one long list of passwords. One for my emails, my groceries, my wifi even my pet insurance. And cardinal sin number one using the same one for everything. Which is something im afraid i do. Something a tech whizz knows all too well. So when stefan thomas, a programmer living in San Francisco wanted to access the digital wallet where stores his bitcoin, he went to look for that piece of paper that had his password written down only to discover hed lost it. Doesnt sound like a big deal . It was for stefan he joins us now to explain why. How many bitcoin are in that wallet and how much is it worth . 7200 bit coins in that wallet. You can cheque the price, but thats more than 100 million. 0h can cheque the price, but thats more than 100 million. Oh my goodness. If you dont have the password and you have two goes left until the key block encrypts everything and it goes away forever, what happens . If you dont guess correctly, is there any redress . big part of bitcoin is there isnt a centralised system, so there is no one i can call to reset my password. There are some chances that i could potentially physically recover in the future, but those chances are very slim, and ive sort of made peace with the fact that ive lost those coins and i wont get them back. Its three a m. , those coins and i wont get them back. Its three a m. , youre those coins and i wont get them back. Its three a m. , youre trying to figure out how to come up with a password whats her modus operandi at the moment to . When i originally discovered that i lost the coins, i was very distraught, i tried everything as you do, and i think eventually i got back to what got me into bitcoin at the first place, which was to help people by making payments better. So after losing the coins, which is now nine years ago, i continued to work on that problem, and eventually made my peace with what happened. Nowadays, imjust glad that it was only money that i lost back but it was so much if you tried a capital s . Christian and i will work on this for a share if we manage to come up with a password, 0k . Manage to come up with a password, ok . So we will get our Heads Together and let you know, and we will come to a little understanding. Sounds good . Will come to a little understanding. Sounds good . There is almost a 10096 chance if you work on its opulent lets try bitcoin with a capital b. We will see you tomorrow with a password. Hello there. Generally speaking, this week is milder than it was over the last week or two, but during tuesday, we saw some colder, clearer, sunnier weather moving down across some of the uk. And theres a real battle going on at the moment between that colder air that has moved down from the north and this milder air thats trying to push in from the atlantic. The boundary between the two is this weather front here and thats producing some rain thats moving into the colder air. So theres the real threat of some freezing rain and ice in western scotland and north west england for a while on wednesday morning. That band of rain moves very slowly into scotland and Northern England, stuck across the midlands and into the south east of england. And signs of snow beginning to develop over the Higher Ground in scotland by the end of the day. Its going to be a cold day in scotland, as it will be in northern and many eastern parts of england. It gets milder as you head further south west and into Northern Ireland. This mild atlantic air meaning a lot of cloud and for a while some rain too. Well probably see some more rain continuing into the evening, not just that, though, beginning to see a bit more snow in the high ground in scotland, and perhaps Northern England as well. This weather front is pushing in, but then it sort of stops. It never charges through the uk and it never pushes away that really cold air that weve got in northern and eastern areas, so there will be some more snow continuing, mainly over the hills, on thursday in scotland and in Northern England. Its more likely to be rain elsewhere and it does eventually become dry in Northern Ireland. Turning drier later in western parts of wales and the south west. Windy and mild, temperatures double figures here. Much colder further north and east, with that wintry mix of weather continuing into the evening. Finally, that weatherfront, then, just sort of slides away and diminishes and it turns drier. We await the next weather system coming in from the atlantic. But friday looks like it will be a drier day. Not sure how much sunshine therell be. I think there will be a fair bit of cloud around and well see it turning wetter and windier in Northern Ireland, later western scotland, some slow perhaps over the Higher Ground because its still quite cold in central and eastern scotland. And for many places, temperatures will be a bit lower to end the week. Now, lets head into the weekend. Weve got a bit of a messy weather front thats coming in from the atlantic. Whats thats doing, though, essentially is thickening the cloud, bringing some rain and the winds are going to be strengthening as well. So weve got some windy weather this weekend. We start with cloud, outbreaks of rain widely. That will tend to move away from scotland and Northern Ireland as the winds turn to more of a north westerly instead of a southerly wind. Itll turn cooler here but brighter. England and wales continuing to be cloudy with some rain at times, windy and fairly mild. Temperatures of 8 10 celsius. That lot then pushes away into the continent, into europe, and then were all left with this north westerly airflow for the second half of the weekend. That means a fair bit of sunshine around. Therell be a few showers up towards the far north west. Many places getting away with a dry day. Itll be windy, perhaps gales in northern parts of the uk. Itlljust take the edge off the temperatures and were seeing temperatures around 7 9 celsius. Now lets head into next week and there are more weather systems, more areas of rain to come in from the atlantic, but it looks like they will tend to steerjust to the south of the uk and again head into continental europe. Thats because the jet stream is going to be further south and its buckling as well. This sort of orientation means were in colder air, so temperatures will be lower by day. Theres a risk of frost at night. There may be some icy conditions as well, because were left with an area of low pressure slow moving close to the uk. Not windy, but there will be some showers, those could be of a wintry flavour sleet and snow mainly in the hills. Tonight at 10 the home secretary blames a minority of people for putting the nation at risk by flouting the coronavirus rules. What we all doing . Breaking up an illegal gathering the police say they wont waste time reasoning with people who endanger others, and will fine them instead. If you do not play your part, our Selfless Police officers, who are out there risking their own lives every day to keep us safe, they will enforce the regulations, and i will back them to do so.
