Helena wilkinson, bbc news. 0ur correspondent fiona trott is in tenerife where hundreds of people are still quarantined in a hotel there. What more do you know about whats happening at the hotel . We can say that what we saw, the people leaving here while waited for this moment for over three days now. Some of them had to sign documentation before they left, others were having their temperature takes in. Health officials here have confirmed that they are from various countries. Therell be a medical review when they get home that they can return to their home countries. They can
leave at the canary islands. But its a bit comp located pictures from what we understand, there appears to be different protocols for different countries. For example, there was a lady explaining she still having to wait. This is because one company said they wouldnt fly anyone back to the uk u nless wouldnt fly anyone back to the uk unless they have completed a two week quarantine or had a test for the virus. Borisjohnson needs to be getting on with it now and ministers need to be coming on the television, on the radio, to be offering some reassurance to the public. Shadow Health Secretary there. Lets discuss the virus in a wider
context. Professor George Lomonossoff is a virologist from thejohn innes centre, which is an independent centre in plant science, research and microbiology based in norwich. Very good evening to you. You to. Id love to try and get some sort of context id love to try and get some sort of co ntext fro m id love to try and get some sort of context from you because some people are very nervous about this. By the same token, there are plenty of people saying, well, its very sad that people have died, but hundreds of thousands of people die every year around the world from flu. So where is the balance here . How much or dangerous, and your opinion, is this than the flu, which does kill people . Well, the situation really at the moment, its not actually clear. From what we understand, the death rate from this particular virus is actually higher than the affected case, around one to 2 . Influenza is about a tenth of that. However, far more people get inflected with influenza so the total number of death is higher. It all depends out on how quickly it spreads and how it can be contained. Whether its causing more deaths. I think the real problem is people dont know at the moment. Given that uncertainty, do you feel that this country is prepared . Do you feel the public is getting all the information it should, that it knows how to react, if somebody thinks they come into contact with someone . Whats your sense of preparedness of the general approach to this right now in this country . I think people are doing what they can from the knowledge of previous, so the advice about coughing and sneezing and washing hands and the like is fairly standard stuff thats been around
for many respiratory diseases. Ever since i can remember. Thatsjust good standard hygiene. Trying to avoid crowds, do that if youre not feeling well with flu, you are told to stay at home, not be brave and go to stay at home, not be brave and go to work. So theres quite sensible things. I think the problem is, and this is so difficult to know, is what does the Spare Capacity stay in hospital beds . They tend to be at this time of year, quite tight. Near their maximum capacity, because it keeps extra money to keep things empty. Cost every money. Will there be a knock on effect for the treatment of other conditions if all the hospital beds have to be used for people with suspected cobit i9 . A quick thought about who is most vulnerable here. It seems to be the elderly. Also those with pre existing conditions. Especially respiratory conditions. At the moment, youre not hearing about many cases of very young people, children. I think that may be a statistical fact because of the relatively small numbers at the moment. It may be something to do with the strength of the immune system. Very interesting to talk to you. Thank you so much. We could speak much longer but many thanks for your expertise tonight. Stock markets have been falling around the world and the footsie 100 has dropped nearly 13 this week making it the biggest one week drop since the financial crisis in 2008. The governor of the bank of england, mark carney, has warned the outbreak
could lead to a downgrade in the uks Economic Growth forecasts. In isolation, we would expect that world growth would be lower than it otherwise would be. And that has a knock on effect on the uk. We are not picking it up yet at all in the uk economic indicators, the survey indicators, but if the world is slower than otherwise would become of the uk economy will be impacted but most importantly is to make sure the system is functioning and we are very confident about that and we are on top of it. Joining me from her office in london is economist diana choyleva. Shejoins be she joins be tonight, shejoins be tonight, thanks she joins be tonight, thanks so shejoins be tonight, thanks so much for your time. Such use of balls weve been witnessing. At that to be expected. Such use of fold. Weve been witnessing. At that to be expected. Such use of fold. The gas made the point that we still dont know. The guest. Theres a huge amount of uncertainty here. It was exacerbated by the drastic response of the chinese authorities. So that created already i sense of uncertainty and at this point in time, its not clear that china is managing to contain it, even though they are trying to portray that. And now it spread to the rest of the world. The real issues is that yes, from the perspective of the markets, the death rate might be one to 2 but we could have 100 panic. Markets hate uncertainty of any kind, therefore that is why we are seeing what weve seen in the last week or so. Even china, could we be
talking about recession . Could be hit back hard with yellow in chinas case absolutely. The First Quarter will be negative, sharply so. They managed to recover from effects that will be an increase, but the wheel question here is, first of all, when will china returned back to normal . The real question. Thats a place the size of the economy of sweden. Its very critical because it reduces 30 of fertiliser and the chinese ploughing season is about to start. There is a real issue of security here that not many people are talking about and its critical
for the the party of china. If we look at how integrated Global Supply chains are an already sorted is are being felt, if the chinese economy seems to have not contain the outbreak, what will be the knock on impact all the rest of the world . Then if we look at the rest of the world, how will the authorities react . Will there be lockdown . Will there be different ways of dealing with containment . What the virologist didnt mention is, sars, it was the warm weather that help dissipate it but at this point in time, scientists are not 100 certain that even with the arrival of the warm weather, this viral outbreak could die out on its own accord. Given everything youve described about the integrated
supply chains and the impact on the supply chains and the impact on the supply chains and so on, is there something that economies such as the uk could be doing right now to try to mitigate or are we so reliance now on so to mitigate or are we so reliance now on so much from china that actually, theres not so much we can do . Again, in relation to your report earlier, what we should be saying is much more decisive Government Action here in trying to get the sense that at least policymakers have is under control. In order to avoid the hundred percent panic that i was describing that can have a much worse impact on the economy of the uk or elsewhere, lets say the one to 2 afraid so faron lets say the one to 2 afraid so far on these numbers, the coronavirus. In one town in east yorkshire, snaith, more than 60 homes have been evacuated. 0ur correspondent danny savage is in the nearby village of east cowick where residents have been warned disruption disruptiocould last for days. This is becoming an increasingly familiar view in parts of east yorkshire at the moment, flooded homes and flooded streets. And think that the rain that caused this flooding fell about a week ago now its taken a long time to filter down through the system. Its filled up the flood plains in the wash lands, and its now starting to get into the villages and towns around here, causing a fresh round of misery. In the flood plain here in east yorkshire, the rising waterfrom last weeks rain has finally overwhelmed villagers. In east callan, near snaith they were waiting back to their homes this morning to the great concern of others living here. Is actually terrifying. Evil are desperately try to get back to the houses. Ijust ran down to the town council. Hopefully someone will be here. Further along the lane, jan cant believe what happened to her home. Im absolutely devastated. Devastated. Ive been here 20 years. We had a beautiful home. Just look at it. The emotional impact is far worse than the actual impact of the work that we got to do. They knew it
was going to be bad when rescuers of evacuated people from their homes here last night. This is why. The flood plains of these rivers stretch for miles now. One area is the size of windemere in the late dick stripped. The problem now is these areas are brimming. Lake district. The last thing they need here is more rain. But they are getting more rain at the moment and with it, more forecast over the weekend, not necessarily to fall here, but further west up on the pennines and up on the hills. Thats where all the water comes from a eventually and filters down the rivers from the Yorkshire Dales into this part the country. This really needs some rest bite around here, but it doesnt look like theyre going to get it. Danny savage reported there. The time is coming
