The 22 year old was suspected of being the driver of the van that ploughed into pedestrians, killing 13 and injuring more than 100, in the las ramblas area. Its believed he may have fled the scene by killing a man and stealing his car. Earlier, Spains El Pais newspaper published cctv images of abouyaaqoub, from the day of the attack, where hes thought to have made his getaway on foot, walking through a local market. The hunt for the Younes Abouyaaqoub appears to be over. On the runs of four days, police have located and shot their main suspect. That has been an incident in subirats where a man was shot down, but police have not confirmed it was Younes Abouyaaqoub. We will have the very latest on that from barcelona in programme. Hate crimes committed online, are to be prosecuted as seriously as offences carried out face to face. New guidelines for england and wales mean the Crown Prosecution Service will seek tougher penalties for abuse on social media, claiming the impact of tweeting abuse, can be just as devastating, as shouting it. Heres our Home Affairs Correspondent dominic casciani. Rhodri colwyn philipps, the fourth viscount st davids, jailed last month for racially aggravated threats on facebook against gina miller, the businesswoman behind the brexit legal challenge. She said she felt violated by his shocking comments, just one of many online attacks she suffered. Now, the Crown Prosecution Service says these kinds of crimes must be dealt with as robustly as offences on the street. Its promising a tougher response, to build public confidence. There were more than 15,000 hate crime prosecutions in 2015 2016, the highest number ever, and a third of those convicted saw their sentence increased. But the number of cases referred by police to prosecutors fell by almost 10 , a drop the cps says it is investigating. I hope that the difference that the guidance and the public statements will make is that people will feel more confident to report hate crime, that they will understand they dont have to put up with the abuse that they might feel that they just have to because theyre disabled, because of their religion, because of their sexuality, and that they will feel confident to come forward, knowing that we can support them, and that we will prosecute these crimes where we have sufficient evidence. 0nline hate comes in many forms, as kaye medcalf knows. Kaye is among transgender people who dont define themselves as either men or women, and it makes them more of a target for online abuse. People were messaging me into my inbox. People were saying horrible things about me, saying that i wanted a tranny loo, that i was an it, using dehumanising language, calling me a lesbian, purposely misgendering me, saying that i was mentally unwell. I think it has affected my self confidence, and it has made me find it difficult to trust other people. I get very nervous about what i put out online, and i get nervous when meeting new people, in case something awful is going to happen, and i think overall isolates you. From now on, prosecutors must give more consideration to complex cases like kayes. Some critics say police and prosecutors still move too slowly on hate crime, but the cps says it is determined to create the best possible chance of achieving justice for all victims. Dominic casciani, bbc news. For the first time in nearly 100 years, a total eclipse of the sun will move coast to coast, across america. It will travel nearly 2,500 miles over ten states, from portland, 0regon on the pacific coast, through kansas in the mid west, nashville, heading to charleston, South Carolina in the east. And millions of people have travelled to the us to see the eclipse for themselves. This town has banned branded itself a clip seville. It will get two minutes and a0 seconds of darkness. It isa minutes and a0 seconds of darkness. It is a small town of 30,000, but people have been coming from all over the world, pitching up to see it. In this campsite outside the town, there are people who have travelled from canada, the uk and australia. Collins from melbourne. He has been to see as many total eclipses as he can in his lifetime. Seeing a partial eclipse is like going to church but a total Solar Eclipse is like seeing god. The town has been planning for all these people coming here for years. Ten years ago we received a phone call from a scientist asking about the eclipse and they could book hotel rooms. That was the first time we heard about it. People used to ask where is hopkins bill. Now no one have to ask. To school, it is bringing out the best in everybody. I love it. It is cool. Bringing out the best in everybody. I love it. It is cool. This is the first total Solar Eclipse in the us for more than a century. A Solar Eclipse happens when the moon passes directly between the earth and the sun. Even though the sun is a00 times bigger than the moon, it is also a00 times further away meaning they appear the same size in the sky. During a total eclipse, the moon totally blocks out our stars light. Even if you are not lucky enough to be in its path, you may still see something. Weather permitting, partial eclipses will be visible in other parts of the world including latin america and europe. We can show you some of the amazing pictures coming out of the united states. That is the North Eastern pa rt states. That is the North Eastern part of the sun there has been nibbled as the moon begins to move across. People lucky enough to be directly in the path of the deepest shadow or totality as they call it, and will hopefully be a clear sky for many of those in the united states, they will witness the suns light blocked out completely for up to two minutes and a0 seconds. There are actually parts of western europe including the uk and ireland which will snatch a site and we are seeing it there now live. A place called carbondale in illinois has been described as the eclipse capital for this particular event. It is close to the geographical point where the eclipse will be at its most dramatic. Viewers in carbondale, hopefully using special glasses, looking at the sun, never look at it without some kind of eyewear on, will be able to see the sun com pletely will be able to see the sun completely disappear as the moon com pletely completely disappear as the moon completely covers it. In fact, city managers in carbondale have been planning for this event for the last three of four years. It is interesting that a lot of the areas from which this eclipse will be seen our little villages, little founds. The event is not taking place over any of the big cities little towns. A lot of these places have had to open up new hotels and find room for the influx of visitors that have been pouring in to get a glimpse of what is a once in a lifetime opportunity, certainly in america anyway. 0ne once in a lifetime opportunity, certainly in america anyway. One of the town s hosting a fresh influx of visitors is hopkinsville. We can go to our correspondent. One of the towns hosting a fresh influx of visitors is hopkinsville in kentucky where we can join our correspondent neda tawfik is there for us. The only word on anyones mouth is eclipse. People will get to experience what that awe inspiring moment feels like. Now far has dedicated this town, hopkinsville, as the place for the eclipse. There are 100,000 people here from all across the country and the world. With me now is doug wilcox, a native front to boy macro and george pressed bill who travelled from england. Doug, give us a sense of how big a deal this is . This is a really big deal. We are having a blast. How excited are you . It is incredible. I have lived here my entire life and i have never seen anything like this. And what about eve ryo ne anything like this. And what about everyone coming to hopkinsville . Were glad to have this experience and that this has gone off so well. It has been very organised and it is a great event. Officials said the only thing they could not control was the weather but it seems like it is holding up. George, you said youve planned this from six years ago . I was at my firstever astronomy classes six years ago. We had a display about Solar Eclipses. I noticed it was a novel america and i thought that would be an opportunity i could go out and see. And now we are in north america. We have made it out here and i will hopefully see my first Solar Eclipse as long as the clouds stay away which is looking good. And you are here with your entire family . What are you expecting to see . We do not know what to expect. We saw an eclipse in 1999 but it was totally clouded out. I think my parents are excited to see it as it is meant to be andi excited to see it as it is meant to be and i am excited as is my little sister. You were originally going to view this from tennessee but now you have come to hopkinsville and you will be on a small family farm . We we re will be on a small family farm . We were staying with some locals and they booked it up here. They told us we are not staying in nashville, we are going to hopkinsville. Now we are going to hopkinsville. Now we are here ready to watch it which is pretty incredible. You do not get that opportunity many times. Is this something you are into, you have put a lot of effort into planning other eclipses . I might do one day. I am astrophysicist so i may end up at other ones for different reasons. Any astronomical event i can get my hands on, i will try to do so. This isa hands on, i will try to do so. This is a big one to make. Doug, how was the town holding up . It is great. The traffic has been better than expected. The organisation has been unbelievable. I think everybody here and all the folks have supported us. This is the best place to view a total Solar Eclipse because it is farmland and open space as far as the eye can see . It is, it is the perfect space to view the Solar Eclipse. And when you hear the descriptions of this being a life changing event and crossing it off the bucket list, is it hard to grasp how rare and experienced it will be . Absolutely. We have won the eclipse lottery here in las hopkinsville. I like that. It is incredible that people have travelled so far to see it. It will be a great feeling when it. It will be a great feeling when it comes around. Click it off the bucket list. It is a list in itself but i think it means a lot more that it is hard to know what it means until it happens. Absolutely. I have never seen a total Solar Eclipse before so i am looking forward to it as well. Nasa will be Live Streaming from here to all across the country and the world. Thank you, sadly we are not as lucky as you. We will have much more coverage of the eclipse on the news channel. Rescue teams from malaysia, singapore and america, are searching for ten missing us sailors, after their warship collided with an oil tanker. The ussJohn S Mccain, and a liberian flagged vessel, hit each other near the straits of malacca. Richard lister reports. The collision happened before dawn. Guided missile destroyer uss John S Mccain was holed at the water line as it steamed towards singapore for a routine visit. The us 7th fleet said several compartments were flooded including berths for crew members. Ten sailors are missing, five were injured. A search and rescue operation is now under way involving ships from singapore and malaysia with air support from the us navy. Four of the injured were airlifted to hospital in singapore, though their conditions are not said to be life threatening. In a tweet, President Trump offered thoughts and prayers, as the rescue efforts continued. The other ship involved the liberian flagged tanker is bigger and heavier than the mccain, it continued to singapore with its cargo of fuel oil intact. Such vessels cannot move quickly, raising questions as to who was to blame. It indicates that the destroyer could have turned across the front of the tanker which is an inadvisable thing to do in accordance with the rule of the road. Its not good seamanship. The collision happened in territory claimed by both singapore and malaysia and one of the busiest stretches of ocean in the world. The Singapore Strait carries around a third of all Global Shipping trade with ships arriving and leaving port in singapore every 2 3 minutes. The malaysian Authorities Say the crash happened just outside a safety zone where shipping is separated into fixed lanes. We know the location of the incident. It is more or less at the entrance to the traffic separation, it is an area where no less than 80,000 vessels travel to the area per year. Injune, the mccains sister ship uss fitzgerald was involved in a remarkably similar incident, colliding with a container vessel off the coast of japan. Seven american sailors died and the vessel almost sank, the 7th fleet blamed poor seamanship on both vessels and removed the fitzgeralds commanding officer. The mccain limped into a Singapore Naval base, but these warships are designed to respond to threats around them at all times and the us navy will be looking urgently at why two have now been involved in collisions injust two months. This is bbc news at 5 the headlines its being reported that the man suspected of carrying out the barcelona terror attack Younes Abouyaaqoub has been shot by police. The 22 year old moroccan is believed to have driven the van into crowds on the las ramblas last thursday, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100. Millions in america rush to get a ringside seat for the first total eclipse over the us in more than 100 years. And in sport. Its been claimed female football fans were made to show their bras at security before stevenages home match with grimsby town last saturday. The English Football League is now investigating. Hibernians Steven Whitaker is recalled to the scotland squad after nearly a year and a half. Hes one of five players back for the must win World Cup Qualifiers against lithuania and malta next month. England have come back from 2 0 down to lead by a goal against germany in the second match of their eurohockey championships campaign in the netherlands. Ill be back with more on those stories after half past. Lets return now to the build up to the total eclipse in the usa. We can get more on the barcelona terror attack. Gavin leejoins us from barcelona. In the past Minute Police have confirmed they have shot Younes Abouyaaqoub. They used the term shot down. It is not clear whether he is dead. This is 25 miles west of where i am in barcelona. A place called subirats. We heard somebody had been seen with what appeared to be a suicide vest. Police say it was a fake explosive vest. The understanding is, what we understand from Police Sources, this is an area known for its vineyards. There was a petrol station. A farmer from known for its vineyards. There was a petrol station. A farmerfrom one known for its vineyards. There was a petrol station. A farmer from one of the vineyards saw a man in a suicide vest close to the petrol station. She asked what he was doing, he ran. He ran through the vineyard. He was shouting in arabic. Police asked him to ta ke shouting in arabic. Police asked him to take off the explosive device. He came closer to him. We are told from Police Sources they shot him from ten metres away. In the past few minutes, police confirming that they have shot and apprehended the chief suspect in the barcelona attacks. This was a man who just hours earlier, Police Confirmed that Younes Abouyaaqoub had driven through las ramblas, it killing 13 people. He had fled on foot. He appeared to be caught on cctv at 5 30pm, leaving the scene. He went to about an hour and a half away from the city. He stole a car by stabbing and killing another man, a spanish national, a 3a year old who was parking his car. They have not seen him since. Throughout, police thought he may have been in the area. They put out a european search warrant. They have thought throughout there was a good chance he was being hidden. In the past five minutes, police confirming that they have shot Younes Abouyaaqoub. So, confirmation, as you say very recently. Are the authorities convinced now that they have all those who were involved in the various plots over the last week . Yes, in the immediate planning of it, yes. There is a big issue here though with accomplices who were hiding Younes Abouyaaqoub. We were told there were 12 who for six months or more, in a town 120 kilometres from here by the seaside, that there was an explosion at the house where they were preparing bomb devices on wednesday, that the chief protagonist, a recruiterfor these attacks, he was the imam of a local mosque. He was killed by accident preparing the bomb materials and then be carried out the attacks. The barcelona attack, then five hours later an attack in a town where one person was injured and for people one person killed and four people injured. Now everybody is arrested or confirmed dead. The issue now is we arejust or confirmed dead. The issue now is we are just hearing as i or confirmed dead. The issue now is we arejust hearing as i am speaking to you, this goes back to the woman who heard Younes Abouyaaqoub at the petrol station whistling it appeared to summary, they believe there is an accomplice who has been hiding him. Now the search continues to find the man who ran with Younes Abouyaaqoub through the vineyard so that people are being told to keep clear of that area now. So an ongoing investigation. Gavin lee from barcelona with the very latest and the news that it has been confirmed that the main suspect, the driver thought to be responsible for ploughing into those crowds on las ramblas, the pedestrianised area on thursday, the driver of that ban has now been shot although it is unclear if he is dead the driver of that van. Any more on that and we will bring you that as we get it. Lets return now to the build up to the total eclipse in the usa. The town of carbondale is in darkness. Joining me now from carbondale is robert walsh professor of solar astrophysics at the university of central lancashire and who has been working closely with colleagues at nasa on the eclipse. It is good to see you. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. It is wonderful in carbondale, illinois. The eclipse is to do about to start. Are you excited . Absolutely. As a solar physicist i look at satellites with computer imagery. To see the sun in this way, particularly the corona around the moon will be spectacular. It is a very Emotional Experience for me as a scientist and for me as an individual to understand what it means when the sun gets blocked out in the middle of the day. You have described it as a emotional, other people have said it is mystical, like looking into the eyes of god. It is like having a hole in the sky. This should not be doing this. The sun should not be doing this. This could block out the bright disc of the sun. Then there is the wonderful halo of the corona, the wispy gases in the atmosphere. They are usually hidden from sight. Today they will be revealed with the total Solar Eclipse. This phenomenon seems to happen in really remit areas when abc is it like parts of siberia and the middle of the oceans really remote areas. But millions of people will see this. That is one of the special things about this Great American eclipse. We estimate there will be 200 Million People within one des drive. This will be one of the greatest science events ever in the greatest science events ever in the history of the world. Its amazing the amount of people who can be involved in it. It is an amazing experience. Apart from looking up and gazing, scientifically, what will you be doing . There are lots of scientists who will be looking to follow the path across america from the west coast to the east coast. We will be able to look at the corona in ways we could not do. We will also look at what happens here on earth. As the shadow is passing across, what happens to the others atmosphere is mac how does it change as the energy from the sun is blocked out from that period of time. Usually you only get it for a few minutes but here we can track it from one coast to another for about an hourand a from one coast to another for about an hour and a half. That is unique dataset. Amazing stuff. Robert, good to see you and enjoy the eclipse. Robert walsh speaking from carbondale in illinois. And the eclipse will move from the west to the east coast of america. The eclipse will go from the west to the east coast of america 0regon in the us will be the first state to experience the celestial phenomenon in a little over an hours time. Lets go to albany now, where space scientist Maggie Aderin pocockjoins me now. Are you excited . I am beside myself. Scientifically, what does it mean . Scientifically, what does it mean . Scientifically, one of the things i love about total eclipses is it is a cosmic coincidence. Itjust so happens that the moon is much, much smaller than the sun, but they have the same size in the sky so the moon perfectly covers the sun. The moon is actually moving away from us so we are is actually moving away from us so we a re really is actually moving away from us so we are really enjoying a spectacular spectacle. It is a cosmic illusion ona spectacle. It is a cosmic illusion on a dramatic scale . It is not an illusion, a really is happening. That moment of totality, strange things happen. The earth becomes very weird. I was standing in a field in oregon and there were about thousand people surrounding me and there were all sorts of people just enjoying this wonderful spectacle. There were all sorts of people just enjoying this wonderful spectaclelj know enjoying this wonderful spectacle. know you are a big student and a nalyst of know you are a big student and analyst of how the moon affects the mood and the waves and so on back on earth, what could this eclipse mean in terms of life for us . The moon is thought to be the mother of all of us. Thought to be the mother of all of us. The tidal force of the moon on earth is what probably created life. So the sun and moon, seeing them in conjunction, it brings home the true marvel of astronomy, and its a marvel of astronomy, and its a marvel we can all share, especially ona marvel we can all share, especially on a day like this. The first time this is happening in more than 100 yea rs. This is happening in more than 100 years. When is it going to happen ain . Years. When is it going to happen again . Total eclipses happen across the world but they are often in far away places or out of the way places. Four fifths of the earths surface is coupled with water so good part covered with water so the chances of it happening on dry land are quite small there was another eclipse happening in 2090, which will cross another place, and another in 2020 in south america. In 2023, there will be won over the ocean. So there are a lot more to come, but they will be a lot less accessible. Thank you forjoining us. Accessible. Thank you forjoining us. Good to see you. Look at the live shot the moon beginning to cross over the sun, nibbling down at the top right hand corner. Of course, its going to be in america, if you are lucky enough to be there, where you will see that total eclipse, completely blocking out the rays of the sun. Its going to be an amazing, magical sight, and rays of the sun. Its going to be an amazing, magicalsight, and you rays of the sun. Its going to be an amazing, magical sight, and you can watch live coverage as it reaches totality, when it will completely block out the sun, on the west coast of america, from 6pm here on bbc news. Time for a look at the weather on earth. Millions of people will have a fantastic experience. Hopefullyjust before six we will have a closer look at the weather for the track of totality across the states. At home, we have seen some sunshine. Sony could win with darshna soni to begin with in the north west. In the south west, high humidity and temperatures of 2a. Some outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving into Northern England but away from Northern Ireland, and this band of rain will continue north into scotland. Where the cloud has broken, it may turn rather misty and murky. A lot of low cloud and hill fog and what we are left with is a warm night, temperatures no lower 16 or 17. It will start off great, gloomy and misty and murky. The rain petering out in northern scotland. It will brighten up more widely across england and wales, perhaps southern scotland. The main focus of the downpours in the afternoon will be Northern Ireland later in the day and the south west scotland. Where we get some sunshine in england and wales, warmer than today, peaking at 26 or 27 across the south. This is bbc news at 5pm. The headlines a man shot dead near Spanish Police near barcelona is Younes Abouyaaqoub. He is the man behind the terrorist attack in barcelona. This is the scene in oregon, where the moon has already taken a bite out of the sun during the first total eclipse over the us in more than a century. 0nline hate crime should be treated as seriously as abuse committed face to face, says the Crown Prosecution Service. And big ben bongs for the last time apart from on special occasions until 2021, due to restoration. Lots happening in the last few minutes in the Police Investigation into the terror attack in barcelona last week. Im joined by tom burridge, who is in the town of subirats to the west of barcelona, which is where we understand the main suspect in the attack has been shot and killed. Thats right. Im standing ona shot and killed. Thats right. Im standing on a roundabout alongside some heavily armed Catalan Police officers, who have blocked the road and down the road, i can see a police van, flashing lights and officers milling around. A large stretch of road is completely cut off but overhead is a Police Helicopter, circling around, its been circling since weve been here. We understand that, about 5pm local time, police acted on a tip off from a local who saw Younes Abouyaaqoub this morning, moved up into this area, a bit a Police Patrol spotted him and, according to local media, he ran off into a field, and they found him and, at that point, he showed up at the time looked to bea he showed up at the time looked to be a suicide belt. It turned out that was a fake, but there have been controlled tests up here within the last half hour or so. But Younes Abouyaaqoub was shot dead by police at that point, and apparently he shouted out just before at that point, and apparently he shouted outjust before he was shot, according to spanish media, god is great. Allahu akbar, the familiar cry. Is there any suggestion people we re cry. Is there any suggestion people were trying to harbour them, that there may be accomplices . The reports out of spanish media are that they could have been accomplices, and basically that is why, we think that we are speculating, the Police Helicopter has been circling overhead for quite a while now. Looking up, it seems to have drifted off. In the last 15 minutes, the sense of this Police Operation being active and ongoing and ina operation being active and ongoing and in a critical state seems to have dissipated. I get the impression from being here that the polices work could be done, just from the level of activity, the mood of the officers in standing next to. They seem slightly more relaxed. The Police Chopper seems to have moved off for now. To be honest, there is a massive throng ofjournalists chatting to a couple of locals, who we re chatting to a couple of locals, who were not here at the time. I have spoken to them myself and they havent seen anything. The Police Chopper is overhead, police have closed the stretch of road. We are out in car the country, the spanish or catalan sparkling wine. There are all around. Apparently, when Younes Abouyaaqoub was spotted by police a short time ago, he ran off into a field of grapevines. This is an industrial area, out in the countryside. This is where the focus of the Police Investigation into thursdays massacre las ramblas has come. Just to remind you, Younes Abouyaaqoub is the man that Police Believe was driving the van and killed 13 people on las ramblas. He is also the man, according to police, that escaped across the city and, on another main avenue, hijacked a car of a young man, who he knifed to death. He killed 1a people and, of course, he is linked to the other, wider cell, the individuals guilty of the attack in cambrils, which ended with the death of one person. You mention the wider cell, and police seem to think it could have been anything from eight to 12 men strong. Is there is sense that, with the killing of abouyaaqoub, the cell has been destroyed . Abouyaaqoub, the cell has been destroyed . Im just looking at the raw fa cts destroyed . Im just looking at the raw facts i have at my disposal, and a load of Police Vehicles are coming up a load of Police Vehicles are coming up the road, so police are moving us back. They are shifting journalists back. They are shifting journalists back as vehicles come up with flashing lights and a white van. I presume they are taking away evidence, maybe the body of Younes Abouyaaqoub, and that band is coming past us now. Police officers are shielding their places from the camera. shielding their places from the camera. That van is coming past. A convoy of Police Vehicles leaving the scene. Going back to the point i was going to make, essentially, if you look at the raw facts of the case until now, i think this place is about 50 kilometres outside the city, a fair distance, out in the countryside. It is also sought west of the suburbs where Younes Abouyaaqoub dumped the car of the young man who he knifed to death, who he basically carjacked. He robbed the car from that guy, he killed him, and he dumped the car in a suburb in the west barcelona. This area is further out, up in the hills. We had to wind our way through narrow roads to get here. Looking at the geography and the amount of it appears that he just might have basically made his way on foot from that moment, and have been incomplete hiding. 0f foot from that moment, and have been incomplete hiding. Of course, there has been such a wide manhunt, police at lunchtime in catalonia today releasing images, images coming out via spanish media from cctv of Younes Abouyaaqoub tried to flee near las ramblas. They made an appeal at lunchtime that he is the man they are seeking. He is on the run. And it appears, from the geography and the amount of time that elapsed since thursday, and how far we that elapsed since thursday, and how farwe are that elapsed since thursday, and how far we are from barcelona, there is a sense that he could have got here on foot and basically been in hiding in the countryside until this morning, according to spanish media, he was spotted by a local resident and notified police. The suggestion earlier was that he had somehow managed to get across the pyrenees into france. Yeah, you know, a lot of information as the situation unfolds in this 2a hour media environment that we work in, and lots of sources on twitter, a lot of official sources in spain, in catalonia, putting all kinds of information out, and most of it is true, but some fake information get out there, and the authorities were looking into the possibility he might have crossed into france. That was a line of Police Investigation. It wasnt simply fake news for them but it was something the police were looking into, there was order checks up looking into, there was order checks up on the french border. There we re up on the french border. There were border checks. They were looking into all possibilities of where the man could have gone. There was nothing to suggest, or police we re was nothing to suggest, or police were not releasing any information to suggest that he had wider accomplices. There is the report in spanish media this afternoon that police were looking for an accomplice, but it could be come on that point of how information get out there quickly, it could be they are ruling out the possibility of accomplices. We dont know. But the police seem to be winding down their operation a bit here. A white van has just left the scene in a convoy of vehicles. I would guess they are taking away the crucial information, possibly the body of the man who massacred 1a people in barcelona on thursday night, Younes Abouyaaqoub. 22 years old, a key member of this terrorist cell who caused carnage on thursday night in catalonia. We are seeing pictures of the police vans moving through the area. As you say, some of the drivers, the investigators and Police Wearing bala clavas to investigators and Police Wearing balaclavas to keep their identity covered up. You are a former spain correspondent. The country has received a lot of plaudits for sort of somehow managing to quell and dampen down the prospect of terror attacks since the madrid bombings in 200a. Is there a sense with this attack that perhaps they took their eye off the ball . I met a senior official in barcelona this afternoon, and a link to the autonomous government in catalonia, andi autonomous government in catalonia, and i put to him two main point is, firstly, that police, with at a house in a count out in catalonia on wednesday, and the discovery of those gas canisters, it at least seems that the police missed something. With the explosion at a house. The source that i met was insistent that, you know, its easy to say that in hindsight, isnt it . But i think questions have to be asked at some level about why that explosion, given the devastation, it com pletely explosion, given the devastation, it completely annihilated the house, so much gas at the scene, and the explosion, that something should have been done further, some further investigation should have been made. The other point was, why were they not safeguard an las ramblas . The question is something that the cata la n question is something that the Catalan Parliament and considered at some point in the past, so there was a debate about it, but my source i met this afternoon said, look, its easy to say that in hindsight and, if you put collards at the end of las ramblas, there are always other avenues, so there are always other targets. If you put collards. Bollards. And also ambulances and other vehicles need to get onto the street. That was why, in the past, that decision was taken, and they didnt put bollards on the street. In hindsight, it was the wrong decision, but the feeling in spain at the moment if there is a real sense of solidarity, and my overarching feeling when i got back to barcelona this afternoon, many yea rs to barcelona this afternoon, many years since ive been here but i used to come here regularly, my feeling was that, on the surface, nothing had changed. The message, looking at tributes down las ramblas, they are really powerful, and the overarching message is that people will not be deterred from getting out on the streets. Spain is the country of bars on the street, and people spend much of their time in the streets, given the good weather, and that will continue. That sense of solidarity and determination in the face of terror was quite palpable as you walked down las ramblas this afternoon. was there last week for the great analysis, thank you, tom. It has been confirmed that the main suspect in last weeks barcelona van attack that left 13 people dead and more than 100 injured, Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22 year old moroccan from the foothills of the pyrenees, he has been apprehended and shot dead, and there are suggestions that perhaps he was wearing a suicide vest, but it now seems that that was fa ke vest, but it now seems that that was fake and, it would seem, the manhunt for this supposed terrorist involved in last weeks attack is now over. Lets return now to the build up to the Solar Eclipse in the usa. Its the First Time Since 1918 where the path of darkness crosses both the pacific and atlantic coasts. The sun is blocked out by the moon. Parts of the state of wyoming will witness the total eclipse, and we can go live to jackson hole and speak to dr kate russo, who is an eclipse chaser hoping to get a great view of her 11th total Solar Eclipse. Its good to see you. Thank you for being with us. Nice to be here. Are you not getting bored of this . Absolutely not this is my 11th and he will never get bored with it. Its a way of life. Do they get better like a good wine . You know what, i think the best total Solar Eclipse you see is the most amazing, because all of the things you think you know about the world are turned on their head, and you see things you never think are possible. You can never get used to that unexpected feeling. Each total Solar Eclipse is different after that, they are unusual, and you get to go to the most amazing places around the world, so you will never get bored of them. You so it you say it thought of as if the world is turned upside down. What changes when you see one or when one occurs . When you are in the path of totality, you have heard the term that you are plunged into darkness, and that is certainly what happens. We assume that its like night, but in fact its different, its otherworldly. The light starts to dim ina otherworldly. The light starts to dim in a way that is very different product instead of having diffuse light around you, its quite directional. You feel like you are ona directional. You feel like you are on a movie set, in some way. The colours fade, the average drops and the wind picks up, and there is an eerie darkness coming towards you. Normally in a storm, you will see the darkness and the clouds in the sky are quite dark but, when totality comes towards you, it is the sky that is darkening, and this is very eerie, when people have the hairon the is very eerie, when people have the hair on the back of their next standing up, they have goose bumps, and it is very otherworldly. Then you are in totality, which is very eerie. You are looking at where the sun should be and there is a hole in the sky and you cant believe what you are seeing. Its beautiful, incredible, awe inspiring and it makes us think about our lives, we feel insignificant, connected to other people, we understand how primitive ancestors would be terrified not knowing that the sun was going to come back. It is an incredible experience, but you have to get into the path of totality, and that is what we did. You are making me veryjealous that im not there i thought i could make do with the tv pictures but, you know what, complete waste of time but its clearly spooky and a bit freaky. Is it scary as well . Those final moments when the darkening is coming towards you, there is a feeling of what we call primal fear, because you get a feeling that this is not right, the world shouldnt be like this. It looks very wrong. I wouldnt say spooky, but you get a sense of wrongness. We understand, of course,. Can you imagine, if you were going about your daily life at this happened and you had no idea the sun was going to come back . This is why so many cultures around the world have different cultural beliefs about the eclipse being a sense of doom and being an omen of something very bad happening. Are you going to keep chasing them . Oh, yeah, the rest of my life, absolutely its not a hobby. Eclipse chasing isnt something you do on the side. It becomes a way of life, because you realise, i love travel, i love these experiences i have, and i feel very travel, i love these experiences i have, and ifeel very humbled travel, i love these experiences i have, and i feel very humbled and privileged to be able to do what i do and to chase eclipses, but anyone can experience and enjoy a total Solar Eclipse. If you ever hear of a path of totality getting near you, go out of your way to try and get into it. A 90 eclipse, partial eclipse is nowhere near totality, so you dont want to miss it. Is very group of people you travel with that do this, that keep an eye on eclipses over the world . There is a community of eclipse chasers, and sometimes wejoin community of eclipse chasers, and sometimes we join up together, sometimes we join up together, sometimes we join up together, sometimes we travel independently, but you always meet new people, new friends, and it so special, and you find a community of people with the same outlook on life. The eclipse chasing community is very friendly and open and supportive and, obviously, every one of us wants everybody to support the lee experience a total Solar Eclipse at least once in your life. We are in partial phase at the moment and i think weve got another half an hour until totality, im starting to see some interesting things with the shadows. Interesting things are going on. I am leading a tour group of 33 eclipse chasers. Most of these people are from great britain, and most of them, about nine of them had seen a total eclipse before, and the rest, this is theirfirst seen a total eclipse before, and the rest, this is their first time, seen a total eclipse before, and the rest, this is theirfirst time, so we are excited by what they are going to experience. Your enthusiasm is fantastic and i want to become an eclipse chaser now enjoyed it, thank you forjoining us. So thats whats happening in wyoming. Lets go now to missouri, where the partial eclipse is about to start. And joining us now from columbia in missouri is dr angela speck, chair of the National Total eclipse task force. Can you hear me . Just about. People are partying a little hard its going to be a very special occasion inafew going to be a very special occasion in a few minutes. Some are how important this is and how excited you are. I have never seen a total Solar Eclipse. I grew up in britain, but the first one in my lifetime was the one in 1999, and id moved to the one in 1999, and id moved to the usjust the one in 1999, and id moved to the us just football. The one in 1999, and id moved to the usjust football. I the one in 1999, and id moved to the us just football. I am super excited. In the last week, i would say that everybody here has got eclipse the book. The atmosphere is amazing. Eclipse fever. People are excited and looking forward to darkness. Scientifically, what are you getting out of it . There is a lot of different science going on. 0ne lot of different science going on. One of the big projects is looking at the role of the sun, the fuzzy white stuff that appears around it, and the only time we can study that used during an eclipse, and there is a project with 68 identical telescopes all the way along the path of totality, and we are one of them. That is one project. There are so many things about the sun but we still dont understand, so we are looking at how it changes over the course of the 90 minutes. It takes the shadow of the moon to go all the way across the country. During darkness, it gets colder, and we get a close, so its a opportunity to do atmospheric tests that you cant fake. We get echoes. You cant fa ke fake. We get echoes. You cant fake an eclipse and make the atmosphere response that weve it allows us to test ideas about the total eclipse and how the atmosphere works. And we are studying animals animals will have reactions to the darkness, too, and we will have webcams studying what happens with animals and plants. Birds fly around in the 20 nits before it goes dark, and then they go quite insects may start chirping and 20 minutes. And everyone, or a lot of people, can see this. This usually happens out in the ocean or inside syria or wherever, but everybody can see this, at least those who have paid their money to get to the states. Out in siberia or wherever. There is a total eclipse on the planet most yea rs, a total eclipse on the planet most years, but most of the planet is ha rd to years, but most of the planet is hard to get to. Even when it is on land, it is in places that are hard to get too bored and now going over places that are relatively accessible and relatively cheap. Its the most accessible eclipse weve had in a century. Enjoyed, have a great time in the path of totality. It sounds like something out of a James Bond Film here is our special agent, out of a James Bond Film here is ourspecialagent, darren out of a James Bond Film here is our special agent, darren bett. A look at the weather across the path of the eclipse. Clear skies across the Pacific Northwest some wildfires, and you can see how the eclipse moves across the rockies for the heading further east, it is later in the day, so things that had a chance to warm up, cloud has had a chance to build, and there were many there may way will be some showers in South Carolina. Most people will get the chance to see it, but there will be some cloud. We have had some cloud and sunshine in the south west, which is where it has been promised. Some muggy air as well. A different story in staffordshire, where it has been about 16 degrees under persistent cloud of you can see how the cloud has been spilling in in North Eastern areas, spoiling the earlier sunshine. Breaks in wales and the south west. This is where we have got the warm air, to the south of the weather front, and that is producing some further rain and drizzle for a while. Everything is heading north up into scotland. Behind it, with the breaks in the cloud, it will turn misty with a lot of low cloud and hill fog. We are left with a warm and muggy night but temperatures perhaps no lower than 16 or 17. Tomorrow starts grey, misty and murky. The rain grinds to a cult in northern scotland pulled elsewhere, a better chance of brightening up for a while, and more sunshine, but the main area for the wet weather in the afternoon will be Northern Ireland. In the south, with some sunshine, in that muggy air, temperatures could be as high as 26 or27, temperatures could be as high as 26 or 27, but much cooler for the far north of scotland. For most of us, we are in that humid envelope of air. This one is moving east, and it will push away the humid air and introduce fresh airfrom will push away the humid air and introduce fresh air from the atla ntic introduce fresh air from the atlantic on a westerly breeze. That weather front, marked by atlantic on a westerly breeze. That weatherfront, marked by a band of cloud producing some rain across the northern half of the uk, pushing east all the while and we will see sunnier skies from the west, a few showers, and still warm with some humidity but we are into the fresh air by the time we get to thursday and, with low pressure in the north west, getting closer to Northern Ireland, it will be wet. Showers in most parts, to the south it should be dry, but not as warm or humid. We are going to stay with the amazing Solar Eclipse on bbc news for the next hour or so.
