Speaking Outside Court a short time ago, charlies father, chris gard, said they now planned to spend some last Precious Moments with their son. We expected to hear more evidence from that meeting between the american doctor who had proposed that experimental treatment on charlie when he came over last week to london. He met with medical staff at great ormond street and they carried out an mri scan on charlie. But instead this afternoon, we have heard from the lawyer representing charlies parents that time had run out for the baby, they said. They had looked at the mri scan and realised that charlie is brain damaged and it is irreversible. And the therapy will no longer help them. Charlies mother connie said some words in Court Earlier today and many people in court broke down in tears, including some members of the legal team. This has been a complex and emotive case and with the background, here is our correspondent. Justice for charlie it is the Ha Rd Est Justice For Charlie it is the hardest thing we will ever have to do. That is what charlies parents said. Let their Beautiful Boy go and be with the angels. Wean your son, which is why we continue fighting. Charlie has been left with his illness to deteriorate devastatingly to the point of no return. This is also never been about payments interests. All we wanted to do was ta ke interests. All we wanted to do was take charlie to The One World Renowned Hospital in an attempt to save his life and be treated by the world leader in the disease. He was diagnosed with a very rare genetic condition causing Muscle Wastage and brain damage. In march this year, the medics at Great Ormond Street Hospital determined that such was charlies condition, his treatment should be withdrawn and he should be allowed to did i die with dignity. His parents could not except the decision and believed there was still hopeful son. An Online Campaign garnered support and nations reaching over £1 million to pay for experimental treatment at a hospital in america, treatment so new that it had never been trialled on animals or humans with the rare genetic disorder. However, judges at every level to the European Court determined that would not be in charlies best interests. Throughout the long legal process, the relationship of the parents and the hospital deteriorated. President trump tweeted that he would be delighted to help. White house officials balked at the family in hospital. The Foreign Office got involved. And today charlies pa rents involved. And today charlies parents ended their fight. Great ormond street hospital had gone back to court after the family said that there was new information. But after examining charlie, an american doctor who said he could help told them it wasnt possible. All the doctors agree that damage to his muscle and tissue was irreversible. Great ormond street hospital said that the agony, desolation and bravery of the payments decision and the utmost respect. Lets rejoin our correspondent at the high court. This seems to be the End Of The Road in this terrible case. The doctors must now work regime for simply offering Palliative Care for Little Charlie. Thats right. And they have a court order that is in place now. That is what will happen. Charlies parents left the high court here in the last half an hour or so. We assume that they have now gone to great ormond street, which is about one mile is a lwa ys street, which is about one mile is always review, to be by charlies bedside. They say that they were to spend their last Precious Moments into the sea, and what will happen next is is very difficult and private discussions between themselves and medical staff. His brain is damaged. I wish i could tell you definitively an answer to your question, but what we do not know is that in 2017, we have treatments available to us that we did not have an 2016 that a changing lives and will change the lives of children and adults with Mitochondrial Disease. Treatment is being developed today that had existed one year ago, would result in people being alive today. So, we are the real reasons edge of medicine moving forward. It is a very exciting time in medicine but this whole case, unfortunately, left charlie behind. What would you agree that there was a small window of opportunity, just a few months, within which perhaps this experimental treatment could have been tried and could have had success , been tried and could have had success, probably, more than likely, according to the percentages, 10 chance of success, 90 chance of failure. One wonders, as you have been outlining, the continuing move for the research and development and the possibility of finding new treatments and cures for that then the line in the future. One wonders of the courts are the right place to be discussing this kind of thing. I mean, it feels as if, if maybe american doctors could have had a conversation with british doctors are charlies bedside months ago, then we might not have gone down this road. With medical decisions such as these, we would love to keep them out of the courts as much as possible. Really, the best conversations and decisions are generally made with parents and physicians looking at each other face to face and try to figure out what is best for the child. Donald trumps son in law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner, is appearing before a special us Senate Investigations panel, looking into alleged collusion between moscow and the trump 2016 president ial campaign. In a written statement, issued before the Closed Door Session, mr kushner insisted he hadnt had any improper contacts with russian officials. Our correspondent andy moore has the details. Jared kushner set out from his home in washington today for the short journey to the senate buildings. Ahead of the hearing, he released an 11 page statement giving his side of the story. Mr kushner, was it appropriate for you to meet with the russian officials . There has been much speculation about what will come out of todays Closed Door Session. But he said they took that meeting but the key thing is there was no contact before that time. His parents connie yates and chris gard have been fighting for months to prevent doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital turning off the life support for ten month old charlie but this afternoon the high court was told they now accepted that no medical treatment could help him. Lets take a look back at his parents legal battle. At the beginning of march this year, mrjustice francis starts to analyse the case at a hearing in the Family Division of the high court in london. On April The 11th the High Court Judge says doctors can stop providing life support treatment. Then at the start of may, charlies parents ask court of appealjudges to consider the case. The court of appealjudges dismiss the couples appeal on may 25th. Onjune the 8th charlies parents lose their fight in the supreme court. Later in june, judges in the European Court of human rights start to analyse the case, after lawyers representing charlies parents make written submissions. A week later they refuse to intervene. Then at the start ofjuly, as the case gains coverage worldwide, the pope and us President Donald Trump offer to help provide care. Earlier this month his parents returned to the high court, as doctors apply for a fresh hearing to examine new evidence. Today they announced they were ending their legal fight. Firstly, id like to think our legal team have worked tirelessly on our behalf for free. And to the nurses and staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital, who have cared for charlie and kept him comfortable and stable for so long. Wed also like to thank everybody who supported us, including all the people here for us today. This is one of the hardest things that we will ever have to say, and were about to do the hardest thing that well ever have to do, which is to let our beautiful Little Charlie go. Put simply, this is about a sweet, gorgeous, innocent little boy, who was born with a rare disease, who had a real, genuine chance at life, and a family who love him so very dearly, and thats why we fought so hard for him. We are truly devastated to say that, following the most recent mri scan of charlies muscles, as requested in the recent mdt meeting by dr hirano, as charlies devoted and loving parents, weve decided its no longer in charlies best interests to pursue treatment, and well let our son go and be with the angels. The american and italian team were still willing to treat charlie after seeing both his recent brain mri and Eeg Perfomred last week, but there is one simple reason why Treatment Cannot now go ahead, and that is time. A whole lot of time has been wasted. Were now injuly, and our poor boy has been left to lie in hospital for months without any treatment whilst Lengthy Court battles have been fought. Tragically, having had charlies medical notes reviewed by independent experts, we now know had charlie been given the treatment sooner, he would have had the potential to be a normal, healthy little boy. Despite his condition injanuary, charlies muscles were in pretty good shape. Far from showing irreversible, catastrophic, structural brain damage, dr hirano and other expects say his brain scans and eegs were relatively normal for a child of his age. We knew it ourselves, because as his parents, we knew our son, which is why we continued fighting. Charlies been left with his illness to deteriorate, devastatingly, to the point of no return. It has also never been about parents know best. All we wanted to do was take charlie from one world renowned hospital, to another world renowned hospital, in an attempt to save his life and to be treated by the world leader in Mitochondrial Disease. We will have to live with the what ifs, which will haunt us the rest of our lives. Despite the way our beautiful son has been spoken about sometimes, as if hes not worthy of a chance at life, our son is an absolute warrior, and we could not be prouder of him. And well miss him terribly. His body, Heart And Soul may soon be gone, but his spirit will live on for eternity, and hell make a difference to peoples lives for years to come. Well make sure of that. Were now going to spend our last Precious Moments with our son, charlie, who, unfortunately, wont make his first birthday in just under two weeks time. And well ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time. To charlie, we say, mummy and daddy, we love you so much, we always have and we always will and were so sorry we couldnt save you. But what is also crucial to the outcome of this case has been a marked breakdown in trust between the doctors treating him and his pa rents. The doctors treating him and his parents. Yes. Which is a real shame, because both doctors and Nursing Staff would want to do the best for charlie in this situation. Obviously primarily his parents. Obviously i am not bad, i cannot comment at all kind of communications and relationships the doctors have had there. Obviously i am not there. But i would imagine they have only ever tried to do the best for them, and its such a shame it has had to come to this lengthy decision. Because really, charliejust needs to die with dignity now. Can you understand what seems to be a sense of anger on their part . They believe there was a window of opportunity from january until now, in which this treatment they believe could have taken place, and would have given charlie, although a very short small chance of some kind of meaningfulfuture, still small chance of some kind of meaningful future, still a chance small chance of some kind of meaningfulfuture, still a chance of a future, and at the moment it is clear from that statement that they feel angry, they feel let down, and that the doctors somehow did not do what they should have done. This is a very difficult situation for the pa rents. A very difficult situation for the parents. My thoughts and prayers go out to them today for this absolutely devastating decision may now have to make. But, again, i can only comment on my previous experience, and in situations like this where we have had end of life ca re this where we have had end of life care to deal with, the medical and Nursing Staff have always only ever tried to do what is best at that particular child. I cant comment on this case particularly because i have not been there, i have not read the notes been involved in any communications with the parents, but all i would say, hand on heart, is that those medical and Nursing Professionals will have done their absolute utmost best to try to get this situation resolved as quickly as possible. To involve the courts isa as possible. To involve the courts is a real last minute, absolute decision for any nursing or medical Tea M Decision for any nursing or medical team to do. They will not have done that lightly and they will not have done it withoutjust cause. What that lightly and they will not have done it without just cause. What do you think is going through the mind of the staff, the nurses and doctors, you know now . Its absolutely devastating. None of us as Nursing Professionals or medical professionals want to have to be in this situation. It is absolutely devastating. Those nurses particularly who will have been with charlie, pretty much 20 47 on their shift patterns, they will be absolutely devastated. I think as well and certainly from my own point of view, there has to be some sort of view, there has to be some sort of relief as well, so that charlie can now die with dignity. With his pa rents, can now die with dignity. With his parents, in their arms, with no equipment, they willjust be able to give him that nice, Lovely Cuddle they have been so long wanting, without any kind of tubes of medical equipment around them. Im not sure how long charlies end of life care will take, i would how long charlies end of life care will take, iwould imagine how long charlies end of life care will take, i would imagine from personal experience not very long. The important thing is those Nursing Staff particularly will make sure that that is absolutely paramount, that that is absolutely paramount, that they get the time with their son. Part of what is so sad about this case is the fact that it did have to go to the courts. It had to involve a judge and lawyers and barristers and all the paraphernalia of that formal setting. When the doctors on the parents just somehow could not get it together. Absolutely. Not in itself is an absolutely awful situation that anybody to be in. You know, sadly that also is where that time bracket as we discussed earlier has gone. It is such a lengthy process doing anything like that through the courts. It is always such a lengthy process , courts. It is always such a lengthy process, and as you say, for some unknown reason the communication between charlies parents and the medical teams for whatever reason just broke down. Local authorities have begun to take out High Court Injunctions like this, giving the police greater powers to stop motorists gathering and taking part in illegal racing. There is some evidence they are working. In places like this the problem has declined, but there is still a hard core of motorists willing to take part in illegal Street Racing, putting theirs and other peoples lives at risk. Police believe that if the three men had been sent to jail, it would have sent out a strong message to street racers. British Scientists Say they are worried that the Greenland Ice sheet may melt faster than expected and raise the levels of the oceans more than previously thought. The algae are microscopically small but they may be having a big impact. What we want to know is how far the algae can spread over the Greenland Ice sheet as the climate warms. Until recently, the melting in summerwas of them. Until recently, the melting in summer was balanced by snowfall in winter. But in the last 20 years, the flows of water have multiplied, each one adding to the level of the oceans. No one is saying that this whole thing is going to melt in the next decade or even the next 100, 1000 years. It is not all have to melt for more people to be in danger, only a small amount, very small portion of this ice sheet has two melts to raise the sea levels and threaten millions of people in coastal communities around the world. What is striking is that this massive block of ice may be vulnerable, if more algae darkens the surface and leads to foster melting. Down at the edge of the ice stream, it has become a torrent. We already know melt water is raising the level of the sea bit by bit, but researchers here want to find out whether that rise will accelerate, and for people in low lying areas, florida, bangladesh and parts of britain, getting an accurate forecast really matters.
