We must be brave enough to admit that the War On Terror is not working. We need a smarter way to reduce the threat from countries that Nurture Terrorists and generate terrorism. This is a very badly timed speech, showing some very muddled and dangerous thinking. He seems to be implying that somehow its our fault, somehow britains fault. At the g7 summit in sicily, theresa may urges World Leaders to discuss fighting online extremism. Ijust happen i just happen to ijust happen to be captainjack sparrow. And jacks back. Well get Mark Kermodes take on the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean offering and the rest of the Cinema Releases, in the the film review. Its five oclock. Our main story police say they believe they have got hold of a large part of the network involved in the Manchester Bombing and have made immense progress in the investigation. They say they expect further arrests. But they also urged people to go out as planned and enjoy themselves over the weekend as they have reviewed security at more than a thousand events. Jane hill is in manchester for us now. Thank you. Again, from this square, people have been arriving to pay tribute, and sit and stand quietly. We will talk more about the events that have been planned, but we begin with those comments from mark rowley. Interesting, he said progress has been made in this investigation. Eight people in custody. All men. 18 to 38. We can hear more of what mark rowley has said about this investigation. This is an enormous investigation, being weighed with the support of the kind of terrorism network. Massive lines of terrorism network. Massive lines of enquiry. Cctv. All communications, and many lines of enquiry, all that information coming together. Many arrests so far. Eight men in custody. 12 addresses searched, cars as well. Making enormous progress. We have got to understand everything around the dead terrorist, network, and the manufacturing of the device. We have still got things to work on. That is the latest. But we can go to Greater Manchester police headquarters. We have been following all the developments. And i think we can expect a further update soon . We are expecting an update within the next quarter of expecting an update within the next quarterofan expecting an update within the next quarter of an hour. We expect the Chief Constable to brief us on this fascinating investigation. That was the head of counterterrorism policing, mark rowley, he said more arrests are likely but police have said they have got hold of a large pa rt of said they have got hold of a large part of the network. A number of properties have been searched across the north west of england, including a pizza shops in st helens, Barber Shopin A Pizza Shops in st helens, barber shop in mosside, manchester. One man was arrested overnight. That brings the numberto ten. Two was arrested overnight. That brings the number to ten. Two people have been released, 16 year old boy and a woman. Eight men in custody. One of them, the brother of salman abedi, ismail. The men have been aged between 18 and 38, held on suspicion of terrorism offences. None of them have been charged, but immense progress seems to have been made so far. The Terror Threat remains critical. And security sources have been speaking to the bbc, they said as much concern about the risk of an attack linked to the manchester bomber, as there was about other individuals trying to copy this, seeing this as a trigger. We have had seeing this as a trigger. We have ha d co pycat seeing this as a trigger. We have had Copycat Attempts in the past, five foiled attacks following the westminster attack in march. And of course, were going to get more about the policing challenges that Greater Manchester police are going to be facing over the weekend, big events planned but going ahead. The people Of Manchester, not giving in in the face of this attack. Thank you. We will be back with you for that update from the chief const. And also talking about the other events, planned over the region. And we can take a moment to reflect on those who lost their lives on monday. So many people coming here, to read tributes, lay flowers. Today, the final name of the final victim. Just 15 years old. Another remainder of the demographic of that concert, i remainder a reminder of home any people lost their lives, or were badly injured. Our colleague has been talking to people, reflecting on the loss of family and friends. Manchester a city which has been punched and badly winded. Yes, its trying to carry on, but it doesnt feel right. The people of this conurbation just feel so sorry for those directly affected. How do you explain that to your children . Someone just comes and. Has done that. Ina concert. Its just awful. Ill be holding on to my kids that little bit tighter. It is inconceivable to understand how the families are feeling. Especially with the children. Itsjust shocking. You just want to do something. Even if you canjust come here and bring flowers, put it down and remember the dead. Ive been a Coronation Street Superfan my entire life. 29 year old martyn hett was one of those murdered on monday night. The flamboyant Coronation Street Superfan was well known online. His mum paid tribute to him today. I genuinely. At the moment, it will change, it will hit me at some point, but right this minute i dont feel the need to be upset and cry. When i think of martyn, all i can think of is smiling, because i have so many fond and really funny memories. The final and 22nd victim to be named today was 15 year old megan hurley. Her familys Sandwich Shop business on merseyside is closed as they try to deal with their loss. We are going to leave that report, going to the Gym Constable Of Manchester police. It has been an extremely challenging week. As people now, eight individuals in custody, between 18 and 38. Still 12 locations across Greater Manchester being searched. That activity is going to continue throughout the weekend. The cordon remains in place outside manchester arena. I am asking people to the patient with us asking people to the patient with us as we conduct searches. We have got hundreds of officers working on this investigation, from the Counterterrorism Network and we have seized many exhibits, being assessed. Enormous progress has happened in the investigation but still one of a lot of work to do. An awful lot. We have seen the best from people, in manchester, coming together to support each other since those horrific events on monday evening. I have been inspired by the determination, solidarity and characteristics of the diverse city. I want to thank the people and businesses Of Manchester who have welcomed the extra Police Officers, providing them with support and refreshments. Manchester is a busy place and over the weekend we have got some exceptionally large events taking place. The manchester games starting soon, at the city centre, the great manchester run, and the concert at the old trafford cricket ground. As well as the start of ramadan, many from the Muslim Community on the streets, taking places of worship. All of these events a re places of worship. All of these events are going to be taking place, and additional officers, including a significant number of armed officers are going to be present on the streets, patrolling. Members of the public can expect to see additional Security Checks at some locations, and we would ask that patient, br ensuring everybody can enjoy these events safely. Manchester has come together this week. The public have seen that compassion. It is important that we continue to stand together in Greater Manchester. Particularly, standing together against some of the Hate Filled Views weve seen from a small minorty. That has got no place in manchester. Sadly, we have got an increase of hate crime reports, from 28 to 56. We cannot directly link these to the events of monday night but we are continuing to monitor the situation and support communities. I have sent a personal message to the Faith Leaders across manchester, thanking them for support and showing that we are not going to tolerate hate crime at manchester. It is important that people report incidents of hate, so that we can support victims and families. They can do this, by calling us or reporting online. Today, i have spent time visiting officers and staff that attended the scenes, at the family reception centre. Today, i have spent time visiting officers and staff that attended the scene. Officers and staff that attended the scene. And with colleagues from british transport police, first officers at the scene, i want to commend them for courage and compassion. Some of them are feeling the effects of what they saw, the actions that they had to take and we are there for supporting them, cancelling certain services. Finally, it is important to remain people that the threat level remains at critical and people have got to remain vigilant. There are going to continue to see armed officers on the streets of Greater Manchester. Thank you i will take a couple of questions. How long do you say that threat level remaining at critical . Obviously, that is a decision for the appropriate body, but we have made enormous progress. As part of the investigations, have you seized any other devices . I said yesterday, any other devices . I said yesterday, a number of items have been of significance to the investigation. Does that include Bomb Making Items . Significant items. What can you say about the device itself . No further comment. The chief const of Greater Manchester police, confirming those numbers. Eight people in custody. And officers have seized thousands of exhibits. But some striking language, it is important that we stand together and continue to stand together. He said he has been inspired by the determination and solidarity across manchester since this atrocity on monday night. And in terms of wanting to reassure the public because of all the events happening over the Bank Holiday Weekend, he said these are going to be exceptionally large Public Events taking place, additional Security Checks in place. But reminding everybody, the threat level is still at critical. Just to be sensible, cautious, but still to enjoy the Bank Holiday Weekend. Striking as well, regrettably, he said that they have seen an increase in the reporting of hate crime, the hateful views of a minority. Reassuring Faith Leaders, no place for this. But also paying tribute to the people Of Manchester, and the response that he has seen since monday night. And also referred to those who lost their lives. Many people still in hospital, with serious injuries. We can get an update, as we are at manchester Royal Infirmary. We are actually at the University Hospital trust, a mile south. Plays host to the manchester Royal Infirmary and childrens hospital. The largest in the united kingdom. We have had an update on some of the numbers. 116 people admitted to hospital at some point after this attack, suffering injuries, 66 of those still receiving treatment. Some people have been discharged in time to get home for the weekend. 23 of those, critical care. That does not mean critical care. That does not mean critical condition, but higher level of care. At this trust, 42 patients, 18 adults, 1a children. Five in critical care. 18 adults, five in critical care. 18 adults, five in critical care. 18 adults, five in critical care. 1a at the childrens hospital. We have just been incredibly busy. Much of the work has been similar to things we may see in major car accidents. Bot the volume has been different. How much strain on the system . We know that the nhs has been stressed . What does this do to the system . It stretches the system but the system also responds because of the people in it. Particularly manchester, people have gone totally Above And Beyond the extra mile. All been there, come m, the extra mile. All been there, come in, rotated around. Maintaining care at all times. At no point have we lacked staff. And finally, what have you made of the response of the team and the community . I am immensely proud of the team. My overwhelming sensation when i left on shoes day was pride. And the community has also been palpable, in terms of well wishes, social media, cards, all sorts. Food none of us went hungry we have just been so well served. It is fantastic. Thank you. Some people still in hospital. Some people still going to require surgery. Still ill. But a lot of people have been discharged, going home to enjoy the weekend. Thank you. And in terms of what is going on in the city Of Manchester, we can talk about the event that is going to happen about now great city games. Available for people to see this evening, and extra security as we have just heard. This evening, and extra security as we havejust heard. But this evening, and extra security as we have just heard. But still promising to be a fantastic event. We have just heard. But still promising to be a fantastic eventlj am promising to be a fantastic event. am surprised you cannot hear the music, 200 metres away iam am surprised you cannot hear the music, 200 metres away i am outside the town hall, the scene of that very moving vigil on monday. But people, out in the sunshine, enjoying this event, you do not need an event. A ticket. We will have 2012 champion greg rutherford, others as well. Great city games Holly Bradshaw just others as well. Great city games Holly Bradshawjust missing out there. 2016 finalist in rio. And are a lot of big names. The main thoroughfare has become a sprint track. All of this being done with extra security, and on my left hand side i can see a barricade of armed police. Police cars everywhere. But as the chief const of of Greater Manchester police just said, he has been impressed by the solidarity, determination of people to come out, everything back to normal. Perhaps not just back to everything back to normal. Perhaps notjust back to normal yet, a lot of sorrow, as it will take a wanting to recover but this is a chance for people to come out, enjoy sport, enjoy sunshine, life carries on as normal and are not going to be afraid. Thank you. And from the great city games, we just hope that that event and Everything Else over the Bank Holiday Weekend is going to set the tone in manchester, after those events on monday night. Back to you. Thank you. Were going to talk more about the security over the Bank Holiday Weekend events, and the Bank Holiday Weekend events, and the government has said. The government says a Protective Shield is in place over the Bank Holiday Weekend. For the first time, armed officers will be patrolling trains nationwide, with thousands of people travelling to events including the fa cup final at wembley, radio 0nes Big Weekend Pop Festival in hull and birmingham gay pride. With me is alun thomas, assistant Chief Constable of the british transport police. Thank you forjoining us. I know you are busy. The armed police on trains. I know we have had this on the underground, in london. But a first across the country . We have been doing this in london since the 1st of january, but these are extraordinary circumstances. The critical threat environment, that means that we have got to ensure that we can protect the rail network, protect well. Talking about key routes, busy routes . Years. The crowded environment, that is a target of choice. We have resources in place that can best defend those environments. The mainland routes, open to us as options. And obviously, you are stretched in terms of manpower, but help from the military . Yes. We have received assets from the ministry of defence, but expanding capacity across london. That allows me to use armed officers, stretching out further, extend the footprint across the rail network. And when passengers series on to police, going through the carriages, it is to reassure them . It is striking the balance between reassurance and raising the fear of crime. Its an art. The way that we deal with that, face to face engagement. My officers are Police Officers, yes, specialists because they have firearms, but the skill of communication goes through them like a golden thread. Face to face, speaking to the public. And following those horrendous attacks on monday, we have got Bank Holiday Weekend, packed with events. Large numbers of people travelling. We work in partnership with the operating companies, and together we deliver the Policing Murder that ensures we can provide this safety and security. Just imagine the fa cup final. Arsenal against chelsea. It is london centric. But people travelling from all over the united kingdom. What we do, high profile delivery, with stakeholders but also most importantly with the public. We appreciate patience. Please feel free to speak to my officers. Traditional Police Officers with that extra bit of kit. Thank you for talking to us. Jeremy corbyn said today that the War On Terror is not working, speaking as Election Campaigning resumed after the attack on manchester. The conservatives have condemned the remarks as crass and appallingly timed. The political truce after manchester, ended this morning. But first, there was a further moment of remembrance. Can i ask that we all stand for a moments silence. And thenJeremy Corbyn re drew the political dividing lines. Austerity has to stop at the wards and at the Police Station door. We cannot be protected and cared for on the cheap. In an attempt to nuetralise the attacks, the Labour Leader insisted he was patriotic and with manchester. Then he made a link between uk terror at home and foreign wars. Many experts, have pointed out the connection between wars that we have been involved in, in other countries, such as libya and terrorism at home. We must be brave enough to admit that the War On Terror is not working. And this message was for the british soldiers. I want to assure you under my leadership, you will be deployed abroad when there is a clear need and only with a plan that you have the resources to do yourjob and secure an outcome that delivers lasting peace. Tackling terrorism requires a complex response. Jeremy corbyns determined not to steer clear of controversial issues and im told he wanted to avoid platitudes in the wake of the Manchester Attack and promote an honest debate. He has done that. Although the speech went down well with the supporters, the opponents are attacking notjust the message but the timing. This is a very badly timed speech, showing muddled and dangerous thinking. He seems to imply that a Terrorist Attack in manchester is somehow ourfault. It is somehow britains fault. Jeremy corbyn is far too ready to find excuses. A few days ago a young man prepared a bomb, went to a pop concert and slaughtered 22 people. It seems to me that to choose to make a political point on the back of that is wrong. I disagree with Jeremy Corbyns point but i disagree more strongly with his timing. The politicians always call for a united response against terrorism. But its proving much more difficult to get agreement and possible solutions. And this evening, Jeremy Corbyn will be the latest party leader to be interviewed by andrew neil. You can see that at 7pm tonight, on bbc one. We tempted to look at the weather. It has been the hottest day of the year so far. We have pipped those temperatures from yesterday, 29 in places. No cloud. Not surprising. Unusually strong sunshine. This was at anglesey. And still, some thundery showers. Gradually, things are going to deteriorate. But it is good to be another uncomfortable evening for sleeping. Those showers, not going to be a wash out, but moving across Eastern England and slow moving across Northern Ireland and the west of scotland. When you have to heat of the day, torrential downpours across the afternoon. Particularly, not as many in the south but more to come. More on that, on the website. This is bbc news at 5 the headlines. The head of the National Counter Terrorism Unit has said that police have taken hold of a large part of the manchester Terror Network but that more arrests are likely. In the last half hour the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester police says reported hate crimes in manchester have doubled since the Terror Attack on monday. Adding a very small minority of people had expressed Hate Filled Views. Armed Police Patrol trains for the first time, ahead of the Bank Holiday Weekend as britains Security Risk level remains at critical. The Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn, says he will change British Foreign policy if he becomes prime minister, to try to reduce the risk of Terror Attacks in the uk. And theresa may urges World Leaders at the g7 summit in sicily, to discuss fighting online extremism. Those are headlines, time now to look at the latest sports news. Good evening. Lets return now to manchester, and until mondays attack, the london bombings of 2005 were the worst atrocity by british born islamist terrorists. 12 years ago, the bombers were led by a gang who grew up in the beeston area of leeds. 0ur religious Affairs Correspondent martin bashir, has been there to gauge the response to whats happened in manchester. What have you been doing since 7 7 . Why do we have another Terrorist Attack in the uk after 12 years . This man, ahmed patel, was related to Mohammad Sidique khan, one of the ringleaders who left the City Of Leeds to plant death and destruction in london on the 7th ofjuly 2005. We come to a critical point. He asked us not to show his face. Yes, we do condemn terrorism, but not loud enough, and only when something happens. These young people are members of leeds muslim youth group. They offer voluntary service to the community and believe their faith inspires their action. For me, as a muslim, i feel outraged that someone would use the name of my religion to justify carrying out these acts. This is spreading and doesnt look like stopping any time soon, which is scary for all of us, muslims and non muslims. People are finding it very hard to accept that these people who are self professed muslims had nothing to do with islam. When people seem to see a pattern in particular community of faith, it can appear that that faith is driving them. For at least the last decade, social scientists and psychiatrists have tried to understand why a small number of british born muslims express themselves through violence. We know that in migrants and their children, they have higher rates of all sorts of difficulties, including mental illness. Social isolation is a factor, youth is a factor, depressive thinking, pessimism, lack of empowerment and control. But while academia continues to research the phenomenon, the nation must rely upon community and religious leaders to fight back against the small but dangerous few who want to pursue terror. These young men who are committing terror on our soil or elsewhere, they do profess to belong to the Muslim Community. But it is 12 years since beeston produced the 7 7 bombers, and we have it happening again. And we cannot be complacent. The Muslim Community repeatedly reported these perpetrators to the intelligence services, including salman abedi. Cooperation and Community Engagement remain the priorities, both here in leeds and across the country. Martin bashir, bbc news, leeds. The bbc has been speaking to a School Friend of the brother of the suicide bomber salman abedi. He didnt want to be identified, but he described what he was like at school, before he left at the age of 14 to school, before he left at the age of 1a to fight in libya. School, before he left at the age of 14 to fight in libya. Who was a bit ofa 14 to fight in libya. Who was a bit of a troublemaker. Just a normal kid, not extraordinary. Hejust got in trouble. He was ok, he didnt seem different to anyone else. I saw him about 18 months ago, hed been back for a while and telling me what he was going to do. He seemed like he was going to do. He seemed like he was going to do. He seemed like he was on the straight and narrow, sorting himself out. Hes back in 40 libya, and has this history of being involved in the fighting. What you make of all that . I dont know. I do know when he was fighting, people are making it seem like he was fighting for islamic state. I think is fighting for the lif g, a sort of conservative islamist group, but they are not the type to go around trying sort of create a caliphate, they are not like that. They want to bring in sharia, they were fighting way before sort of what happened in libya. People try to tie them to islamic state, which is a bit unfair. Theyre islamic state, which is a bit unfair. They re not islamic state, which is a bit unfair. Theyre not exactly a great group of guys, but its not fair to say there are isis. I think some li fg say there are isis. I think some lifg guys had links to alqaeda rather than isis. They were mainly anti gaddafi. Rather than isis. They were mainly antigaddafi. It wasnt antiwest, they just wanted to stop antigaddafi. It wasnt antiwest, theyjust wanted to stop colonel gaddafi. Did he ever talk about any of that . Not really, no. Wejust talked about what he was doing in life, but he was going to do, thats all. But he seemed on the straight and narrow . Yeah, he seemed like a normal guy. An important archive showing the remarkable footage of explorers from a hundred years ago, has been found and bbc news has been given exclusive access to the films. They show the frozen mountains of the himalayas to the searing Libyan Desert as they were first discovered by western adventurers. 0ur science correspondent, pallab ghosh, has been to have a look. This is the first ever view of Mount Everest from the air. It was shot in 1933 by a group of pilots who risked their lives to help create an aerial map of the mountain. The film is part of the royal geographical societys archive. It includes the very first attempt to climb to the top of Mount Everest, in 1922. The climbers are treated to a ritual dance at a tibetan monastery. Around the dancers waists are aprons made from a lattice of human bones. The cameraman was captain john knoll. His daughter recalls how her father filmed the expedition. He had a purpose built tent hed taken with him to base camp. And at night, using water from the glaciers and yak dung as a source of heat, he processed 10,000 feet of film on themountain. Conservation specialists are painstakingly restoring 138 films of some of britains greatest explorations frame by frame. One of them is of a young army officer crossing the vast expanse of the Libyan Desert by motorcar. Thats my father driving now. He even wrote a scientific papers about how sand moves. His research is helping Space Agencies to this day, to develop rovers that can drive across the surface of mars. To see this film makes me feel very proud of him. Im in awe of what he managed to do. We can all now relive these extraordinary adventures, stories from a bygone age when the world held so many mysteries. This is bbc news at 5 the headlines the head of the National Counter Terrorism Unit has said that police have taken hold of a large part of the manchester Terror Network but that more arrests are likely.
