A five year old becomes the youngest victim of coronavirus in the uk, as people are urged to stay at home, amid a large rise in deaths. The queen will praise the countrys self discipline in response to the crisis, when she makes a Rare Television address on sunday. Markets reopen in parts of italy as hopes rise that theyre over the worst. And sir keir starmer becomes the new Labour Party Leader and commits to working with the government to tackle the crisis. As the weather heats up across europe, the authorities are ramping up efforts to keep people at home to help fight the spread of the disease. A five year old boy has become the youngest person in the uk to die with coronavirus. The Uk Cabinet Office minister, michael gove said it appeared people were adhering to social distancing guidelines. Mr gove said seven healthcare workers have now lost their lives in the uk, fighting the virus. To help the nhs, the government said hundreds of new ventilators are being produced every day, with many more being sourced from abroad. The spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez said the country was close to passing the peak of the virus as the daily death toll fell to its lowest level in a week. In italy the number of new coronavirus cases is stabilising with fewer people being admitted to intensive care. In the us a record 630 have died in new york state from covid i9
in the last 2a hours. Here in the uk, the department of health has confirmed that 4,313 people have now died after contracting coronavirus, but there are suggestions that the spread of the infection is slowing. Our science correspondent pallab ghosh reports. Brighton beach would normally be packed on a day like this but across the country, it seems that most people are following the governments instruction from the to stay at home. The police have been told to engage with those they suspect of breaching the guidelines, like these people having a barbecue, and advise them to return home. One emotional and exhausted nurse posted a video after a shift in intensive care explaining why it was so important for people to observe the guidelines. Were desperately short of staff and things are really difficult and were all really struggling. So im just saying to you all to stay in. If you stay in and you dont spread it and you dont catch it, that takes the pressure off of us because we are all on our knees at the moment, to be fair. That sentiment was echoed at the downing street briefing with the news that covid i9 had claimed the life of a young child. Our thoughts today are also with the family of a five year old child with Underlying Health conditions whos tragically died. So again, you must stay at home to protect the nhs and to save lives. The latest projections indicate that if people continue to stay at home, the increase in cases could begin to slow down in seven to ten days time and then plateau. Id also like to ask Stephen Powis whether we should take any heart whatsoever from the flattening of hospital admissions in some parts of the country. There is some evidence that the measures that have been put in place, everybodys compliance
with them is reducing transmission. The benefit will be reflected over the next days and weeks, first in a reduction in infections, then in a reduction in hospitalisation and finally in a reduction in deaths. So yes, there is reason to be hopeful. Watford General Hospital in hertfordshire has declared a Critical Incident and told all patients apart from women about to give birth to stay away. The Hospital Trust says its because of a technical issue with oxygen equipment. The government continued its testing of nhs staff, but few were turning up today at this temporary centre in surrey. At the moment, overall, hospitals have the capacity to deal with the expected surge in cases, but that could easily change. We can keep you alive using the technology and the equipment until your body gets over it, but we cant
fix the virus. But the general public, you can fix the virus. You can stay at home, stay indoors and dont spread it. If nothing else, do not spread it. The number of deaths are likely to continue to increase over the coming days. Experts say the best way of turning the tide is to stay at home. Youre watching bbc news. For the First Time Since the Coronavirus Crisis began, italy has recorded fewer deaths over 2a hours than the uk. Authorities say 681 people have died since yesterday bringing the total to more than 15,000. The number of new coronavirus cases there is also stabilising and fewer people are being admitted to intensive care. But authorities fear this could give people a false sense of security, with many now asking the government to relax the lockdown restrictions. From rome, jean mackenzie
sent this report a slice of normal, a local market reopening for the first weekend since italys lockdown began, albeit with some caveats. Do you think this is safe . There are very few people, everything is under control, so, its ok. What difference does it make, having the market open again . It seems like, you know, normal. But things are not normal. Italy might have reached the peak of its epidemic, with fewer deaths here in the last day than in the uk, but the country is still in strict lockdown. As the infections plateau and even start to decrease and the weather keeps improving, its going to be a real challenge for authorities
to convince people to stay indoors and play the long game. Because the lockdown is working, they say. Just look at the hospitals, where the number of people in intensive care has fallen for the First Time Since this crisis began. The situation, for the first time after weeks, is not worsening any more. We are still working 12 15 hours per day. They are serious, they are critically ill, but we can now cope with it. It is a relief. From a rooftop in rome, this serenade has become a nightly affair. People leave their homes to soak it in, just for a few minutes, while police look the other way. The sound of hope returning. Jean mackenzie, bbc news, rome. In spain, the Prime Minister has said the country is close
to passing the peak of infections as the number of coronavirus deaths fell for the second day in a row. But Pedro Sanchez also extended lockdown measures until the 25th of april, saying the restrictions were saving lives. The toll of 809 deaths in one day, is the lowest in spain for a week. I spoke to Marta Gonzalez freire, a biomedical scientist working for the Balearic IslandsHealth Research institute. Her team is looking to test some existing drugs to see if they can treat covid 19. We are trying to see if some of those fda drugs, already approved to treat other diseases, good work to pretend or have some protective effect encoded 19 infections. So thatis effect encoded 19 infections. So that is what were doing at the moment. I understand that there are
69 existing drugs that have identified that may have some impact on the virus. Tell us about the drug you are looking at. We are looking at in antidiabetic drug that is being tested as an anti ageing drug as well so in the scientific report they also said it would target an inflammatory pathway that could modulate the viruses hosting factors. So we believe that may people who are taking this drug could have lower hospitalisation rates and low mortality. We want to see if that is true or not. What is the process now to start those tests and how long before you think you will see a result . It will take us two or three weeks to analyse the
data from patients because at this moment all the hospitals are going crazy so moment all the hospitals are going crazy so getting access to all the Clinical Data is difficult at this time. Hopefully in the next two or three weeks we can have something in oui three weeks we can have something in our data. How domestic are you that the answer to treating coronavirus lies with a existing drug . Some of the drugs they are using at the moment our working pretty well because what is happening with covid 19 patients is that they are dying because of a cyanotic storm. A hyper inflammatory state. This leads toa hyper inflammatory state. This leads to a pulmonary oedema and multiorgan
failure because of this hyper inflammation that we also see in ageing, in old people. An interesting biomedical point of view there. Buckingham palace has given more details of tomorrow nights special broadcast by the queen about the coronavirus emergency. Earlier our royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell explained the significance of this message. It is not wartime but everyone is facing the same peril and everyone has a part to play. We are told it isa has a part to play. We are told it is a deeply personal message from the queen who will talk about the challenging time that has already brought grief, financial difficulty and enormous changes for everyone. She will think those on the in nhs, essential services and care homes stop she will recognise the pain already felt by many families and she will thank everyone for playing their part for following government guidelines to protect the vulnerable. And then, in an echo of
wartime spirit almost and of shared National Purpose she will say this, i hope National Purpose she will say this, ihope in National Purpose she will say this, i hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge and those who come after us will say that the britons of this generation we re that the britons of this generation were as strong that the britons of this generation were as strong as any, that the britons of this generation were as strong as any, that the attributes of self discipline, of quite good humoured resolve and fellow feeling still characterise the country. A situation without precedent in her reign and the broadcasters intended to reassure and draw the nation together. It will be transmitted at eight oclock tomorrow night. Sir keir starmer has vowed to lead the labour party into a new era after a decisive victory to become labours new leader. The former director of public prosecutions, whos only been an mp for five years took 56 of the vote, defeating rebecca long bailey
and lisa nandy. Sir keirs first task will be to respond to the coronavirus emergency and he has accepted an invitation from the Prime Minister to take part in briefings from next week. 0ur Political EditorLaura Kuenssberg reports. Phone rings no eager crowd, no hush of anticipation. Instead, the ping of an e mail, the bleep of a text, labours new leader announced in lockdown. It is the honour and the privilege of my life to be elected as leader of the labour party. It comes at a moment like none other in our lifetime. Coronavirus has brought normal life to a halt. Under my leadership, we will engage constructively with the government, not opposition for oppositions sake, but we will test the arguments that are put forward. We will shine a torch on critical issues. And where we see mistakes or faltering government or things not happening as quickly as they should, well challenge that and call them out. Sir keir starmer was in charge of labours troubled brexit plan, but was ahead from the start of this long contest. A former lawyer before becoming a london mp, hes considered less left wing thanJeremy Corbyn, but he won twice as many votes as his nearest rival. Back injanuary, these members in the marginal bury north gave him mixed reviews but today. Ive been a supporter of keir for a long time and have in the past described him as sensible and steady, which werent especially flattering adjectives, but i also think hes very trustworthy and inspirational. My current view is that hes a bit dull. If you could clone what a minister would look like, itd be him, mid fifties, wears a suit, but maybe thats what the party needs at this time. It needs that strong and stable element about it. I think his track record shows him to be a fair and determined person. Im also confident that he will be an effective and credible leader
of the opposition. To become Prime Minister infouryears, though, Jeremy Corbyn left behind fewer labour mps than at any time since world war ii. The party shrivelled in many areas that it used to call home. Im just sorry that we have let people down. The new leader has already given a grave apology to the Jewish Community after so many accusations of anti semitism in the party. But on so many fronts, there is a huge job ahead. I understand the scale of the task, the gravity of the position that were in. Weve got a mountain to climb. Where that requires change, we will change. Where that requires us to rethink, we will rethink. Ultimately, labour needs to win the wider world, but after so much bitterness inside, there are wounds to heal. In the strangest of times, many in the party hope that this is a chance at a new normal. Laura kuenssberg, bbc news. The headlines on bbc news a five year old becomes the youngest victim of coronavirus in the uk, as people are urged to stay at home amid a large rise in deaths. The queen will praise the countrys self discipline in response to the crisis when she makes a Rare Television address on sunday. Markets reopen in parts of italy, as hopes rise that they are over the worst. 13 residents of a care home in glasgow have died over the past seven days, leading to concerns about a possible link to conavirius. None of the residents were tested for the virus because they werent admitted to hospital. Our scotland correspondent Alexandra Mackenzie is in glasgow. Well, Alexandra Mackenzie is in glasgow. Our care home after well, our care homes are looking after the frere list members of our families, and the Burlington Court has 90 beds, and 13 residents have died there in the last seven days. As you said, we dont know if this is definitely down to covid 19. They we re is definitely down to covid 19. They were looked after within the home, they werent taken to hospital, so they werent taken to hospital, so they wont tested. But we do know that two members of staff have tested positive, and that family members were told that there could bea members were told that there could be a connection with coronavirus. Now, scotlands deputy first minister, john sweeney, he has expressed his condolences, and he has said that the deaths demonstrate the gravity of the threat that we face to our population. New york state has suffered its biggest one day jump
in coronavirus deaths so far, with 630 new deaths reported. Governor andrew cuomo has cautioned there could be worse to come. More than 8,000 people have now died across the united states. During a Daily Briefing with reporters, President Donald Trump has said that the Us Government would be deploying thousands military personnel to states to help them deal with the coronavirus epidemic. And we are going to be adding a tremendous amount of military to help supplement the states. Thousands of soldiers, thousands of medical workers, thousands of soldiers, thousands of medicalworkers, professionals, nurses, doctors. And itll be a large number, it will be we will be telling them over the next very short period where they will be going. And they are going into war. They are going into a battle that they have never really trained for. Nobodys trained for this, nobodys
seen this, i would say, since 1917, which was the greatest of them all. Ican which was the greatest of them all. I can also report that my direction, 1000 military personnel are deploying to new york city to assist where they are needed the most. That is the hottest of all the hotspots. Newjersey is right there, is right next to it, and i dont know if that is overflow, new jersey next to it, and i dont know if that is overflow, newjersey is its a great state, and its a very its a crowded state, also. Where you have people on top of people, its a lwa ys have people on top of people, its always tough, but we are bringing some of the ventilators. We got some from newjerseyjust some of the ventilators. We got some from newjersey just yesterday, some of the ventilators. We got some from newjerseyjust yesterday, and we are going to bring them some more, including doctors. We are getting doctors, nurses, respiratory specialists and other support workers. These are from the military. We are taking people now out of our military. We have been doing it, but now were doing it on a larger basis, and i want to thank secretary of defence esper. The Prime Ministers fiancee, carrie symonds, has tweeted to say she has spent the last week in bed with the main symptoms of coronavirus. She said, i havent needed to be tested, and after seven days of rest, i feel strong and im on the mend. Borisjohnson remains in isolation in downing street with a High Temperature after testing positive for covid 19 last week. They are used to selling to pubs, restaurants and school kitchens, but wholesalers are now helping to feed the family after the coronavirus closed the door to the hospitality industry. Some suppliers are also providing hundreds of thousands of food parcels for elderly and vulnerable people. Our Business Correspondent emma simpson reports. That is a seriously big bag of flour. Its not your usual weekly shop. This is a new drive through, click and collect service at a Food Warehouse in essex, and theyre making the most of it. Im shopping for my extended family,
so i am getting for myself and my sisters, and i will split up and job to them. Im a teacher, so im out and about, but i prefer not to be in the shops, so this has been a great help. My daughter lives on tomato sauce. Shesjust come back from uni, and ive realised what shes been eating. Just some things for baking, that. You can say that again here is his box of eggs. It is fascinating to see what some people are stocking up on. The most popular items pasta, flour, baked beans and tomato ketchup. Supermarkets are struggling to stock some basic items, but there is plenty of food here. Most of the food at this depot is supersized, from tins of beans to bags of pasta. Wholesalers generally do not sell direct to consumers. This Service Provider lost 40 of its orders overnight, and then switched its Business Model to sell direct
to to local communities instead. Its a no brainer. We saw the pressure on the supermarkets. We saw people being vulnerable in the community. So we turned on the click and collect to help service those individuals. That includes government emergency food parcels. They could soon be making 250,000 deliveries a week from across their uk depots. Here is another business which has cooked up a new way of working. This Catering Company would normally have 25 chefs on deck, but its corporate clients are in lockdown. A Skeleton Team is now making meals for emergency workers, and churning out boxes for sale. The boxes are a lot cheaper than we would normally sell, reallyjust to get some income, and at the same time, supplying people who cant get out. Were normally bustling
at this time of year, but right, now were just doing enough to get some cash in, and also help the community. Businesses are having to adapt fast. With food, at least, if you are able to supply right now, there is no shortage in demand. As we heard earlier, the good weather has once again prompted officials to urge people to stay home to prevent the spread of the disease. Many of us are fortunate to have gardens and access to outdoor areas, but many people are not, making public spaces crucial. Alice porter has been speaking to one family feeling the impact. Coping in the flat with no outdoor space for felix and i has been lots of challenges. Staying at home during this beautiful weather isnt easy, but single mum annette has a two year old with a condition which makes this even more difficult. Felix has a very unique breathing disorder, which are about 500 people in the world have. So it is extremely challenging being indoors,
because he cannot bang or cut or hurt himself. I have adapted the home, because normally he is very used to going out, so i have had to add foam piping around lots of the furniture. It looks a bit crazy, but it definitely helps, because he has started to run around, and him falling over, which he has done a couple of times, is bad if he banged into something. It is almost two weeks since borisjohnson announced the lockdown, and since then, self isolation has been tough for everybody. But for families without any outdoor space or gardens, like this, it is even harder. We are very used to being out, going to the parks. It is difficult because they have to amuse him in different ways. I love being at home, but when you are told to be at home, its a com pletely are told to be at home, its a completely different perspective. And you suddenly lose your freedom. With no one knowing how much longer the lockdown will continue, children like felix might have to keep enjoying the sunshine from a
distance. Now, for those adventurous among us who have dreamed of one day climbing mount everest, clearly now is not the time, although one man remains undeterred. John griffin traded compass and crampons for a staircase and bannister to climb the equivalent of the worlds highest mountain at home. Duncan kennedy has more. Wish me luck, here we go. Bye. In these times of great uncertainty, life really does have its peaks and troughs. Ooh that hurts right. Butjohn griffin has peaked higher than most. The total height is 8,850 metres. By climbing the equivalent of mount everest, using just the stairs in his house. Just it was an offhand remark to my wife, literally a week ago today, in the morning. Id walked upstairs to the bedroom for the fifth time and i said to her, by the time this lockdown is over, ill have climbed everest. So he did it for real 29,000 feet, or 41,000 steps. Ive got to get to 75 minimum today. Six hours a day, forfour days. But coming down doesnt count towards the total. Just got to sit down for a minute. By day three, it was peas on knees for this stairway to hell. My lovely wife suggested sticking frozen peas on it. Daisy even stair climbers have sherpas, during what is also a sponsored effort byjohn to raise money to help people who use food banks. Alexa, play move any mountain. Yeah john summited last night, to his waiting wife, niri, daughter daisy and his neighbours,
ending the kind of uplifting achievement he hopes will soon put everyone back on top of the world. Thank you. Duncan kennedy, bbc news. Congratulations to him. Now its time for a look at the weather, with ben rich. Good evening. Temperatures got up to around 70 degrees in some south eastern parts of the uk today, thanks to a lot of sunshine. There was more cloud further north, but through tomorrow, more of us will cease in sunshine, and it will be even warmer. Quite breezy, though, particularly windy in the west, where we will also see some outbreaks of rain later on, as this stripe of cloud approaches. This is a frontal system. We have had a fair amount of cloud across North Western parts of the uk today. That is rolling its way northwards now, as we pick up a southerly wind, bringing dry area in our direction, helping to break that cloud up, but also bringing that warm air northwards across just about all parts of the uk. So, as we go through tonight, you can see that cloud rolling away to the north. More clear skies developing, but despite those starry skies overhead, is not going to be a particularly cold night, partly down to the increasing strength of the breeze. Some eastern areas may be getting down be getting down to freezing, the vast Majority Holding between around three and eight degrees. So into tomorrow, a lot of sunshine through the day. We will generally see some wispy high cloud spread in from the west, turning that sunshine a little hazy, and certainly it will cloud over for northern a little hazy, and certainly it will cloud overfor Northern Ireland, the far west of wales, far south west of england will see a bit of rain splashing in her later in the day. It is going to be windy for all of us, but articulately windy in the west. Those other wind gusts, could see gusts of 50 mph or more parts of Northern Ireland in western scotland. But those temperatures 21 degrees in london, even further north, glasgow up to around 18 degrees. Pollen levels, though, will be high across england and wales. It is mostly tree pollen at this time of year. The level is a little bit lower across Northern Ireland and scotland. Now, as we go through sunday night, we will see this frontal system sliding its way eastwards. Some rain with that, in fa ct, eastwards. Some rain with that, in fact, it could linger across the south east corner for a time on monday morning. Could see some slightly heavier rain just drifting
along that front for a time. It should then clear away, then we will see some brighter skies and some sunshine. Some showers as well, particularly across scotland and Northern Ireland. Some of those showers could be on the heavy side. As far as temperatures go, were looking at highs of 12 17 degrees. Soa looking at highs of 12 17 degrees. So a little bit cool at this stage, but that is not going to last. As we head deeper into the week, we see a southerly wind returning, and those temperatures will climb once again. Could well get up to around 22 degrees in the south, and it will be dry for many of us. This is bbc news im Rachel Schofield with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. We will be looking at the papers in a moment. The government urges people to stay at home as the death toll from coronavirus in the uk rises by 700. Including a five year old boy. 13 residents have
a care home in scotland are feared to have died after becoming infected with the virus. Spain records its lowest number of deaths this week as the government says the crisis may be reaching its peak there. There has also been a downward turn in coronavirus death in italy, the country that has suffered highest number of fatalities. Meanwhile in new york, the epicentre of americas outbreak suffers its worst day as 630 deaths are recorded in the past 24 hour is. And here, sir keir starmer becomes the labour leader and promises to work with the government to tackle the Coronavirus Crisis. Hello and welcome to our look ahead to what the papers will be bringing us tomorrow. With me are broadcaster
