Good evening and welcome to bbc news. Britains most senior diplomat at the european union, sir ivan rogers, has resigned just months before he was due to play an Important Role in the complex negotiations on the uks exit from the eu. Sir ivan faced criticism last month when it emerged that hed warned the Prime Minister that securing a post brexit trade deal could take a decade. Tonight the bbc has obtained his Resignation E Mail to his staff in which he urged them to continue to speak the truth to those in power and to challenge Muddled Thinking and ill founded arguments. We can speak to our Political Correspondent tom bateman. We got a bit of a sense of why sir ivan resigned from the e mail. It sounds as if he was just hacked off . It was pages e mail that he sent to his team in brussels, quite a lot to say. On one level this is an e mail from our boss to his team saying, it was great working with you, that it went on to say a sense in which he wa nts went on to say a sense in which he wants his team to continue the work. These are the comments that are likely to be widely interpreted as a glimpse into what his frustrations are in terms of working for his political masters. He says, i hope you will continue to challenge ill founded arguments and Muddled Thinking and wont be afraid to speak the truth to those in power. He goes on to detail what appears to be some of the challenges ahead when it comes to setting up a team to negotiate brexit. Theresa may wants this to get under way by the end march. He says the structure of the Negotiating Team and the structure of roles and responsibilities to support the team needs rapid resolution. He goes on to talk about the Negotiating Experience in West Minister saying that serious multilateral Negotiating Experience is in short supply in whitehall. That is not the case in the commission and the council. He is this letter will be interpreted as an explosive intervention into the debate around brexit and what we had tonight are the allies of sir ivan who are saying he is another person who are saying he is another person who has been pushed to the margins in the campaign for brexit and in the words of one mp, the people that havent dropped the brexit kool aid. On the other hand, those who campaigned for brexit says sir ivan wasnt the right man for the job. It has been a fast day of reaction. Behind the darkened windows, at the Prime Ministers side, as she arrived at last months eu summit, sir ivan rogers tried to keep a low profile. But his warning that it could take the uk ten years to get a new eu trade deal overshadowed what was already a difficult occasion for theresa may. He was criticised for being too pessimistic. Some whove worked with sir ivan believe his departure is a real loss to the government. The only way were going to deliver a successful, Workable Brexit is precisely with the expertise of people like ivan rogers, whos now been forced to the margins, forced to the side lines, because of the angry Zeal Of Brexiteers Who just wont accept anyone who says anything different to what they so happen to believe in. Theresa may is losing someone who knows the corridors of the eu better than anyone. He was a key member of the former Prime Ministers team as he tried to get an agreement on a new relationship with the eu before the referendum. In an unusually unspoken tweet outspoken, the top Civil Service of the treasury lord macpherson said. But leading Brexit Campaigners are delighted hes gone. Sir ivan is part of the establishment that, frankly, havent accepted the Referendum Result and are hoping that, frankly, it will never happen. Im sorry to say, but the Foreign Office is stuffed full of these people, from top to bottom. For decades, theyve been taking britain in completely the wrong direction, and i hope sir ivans departure is followed by many, many more. While Downing Street is determined to betray a positive brexit message should, those who know sir ivan and brussels well says his warnings of the difficulties ahead with dismissed because it didnt fit the narrative and they fear it will be difficult to find a replacement who knows and about how europe works and is acceptable to ministers in london. And whoever takes over as the uk representative to the eu will play a critical role. Its important we have someone in the job as sir ivan was doing and no doubt his Successof Ivan was doing and no doubt his successor will do as well who will report back to the British Government and through the government and through the government to parliament about what the other Member States are saying and thinking because in a negotiation, it really pays to know whether where the other side is coming from. Theresa may will trigger article 50 by the end of march and it wont be easy to get someone march and it wont be easy to get someone in place and ready for the start of the crucial brexit negotiations. Carol is making the point that it went the easy to find somebody. As went the easy to find somebody. As we said, there were tensions between sir ivan and number ten. Is that suggest that whoever is called in to replace him probably has to be at declared brexiteers . Remember the Civil Service and that includes diplomats working in broad abroad, should be in partial. Impartial. You heard from nigel farage that they believe he was in Effect Somebody who believed in britain remaining in the eu. That he was part of the political project in brussels and believed in it. Do you now have a situation where Downing Street have to look for somebody who is by Heart Brexiteer . I think an open process may be held with his job. It might not be advertised for people already working in the Civil Service. Could you then have a situation where you perhaps take somebody from business or somebody who has worked diplomatically in another field . Who has worked diplomatically in another field 7 that, who has worked diplomatically in another field . That, we who has worked diplomatically in anotherfield . That, we will who has worked diplomatically in another field . That, we will have to wait and see. I think all of this also talks to another interesting point. We have heard from former Civil Servant about brexit, some of whom have been saying it will be a big, complex tasks. Is that saying we will get more Civil Servants creeping under . We have heard from not just one but creeping under . We have heard from notjust one but two very recent former Civil Servant saying this will be a problem. Tom, fascinating stuff.
