a potential national security risk. counterterrorism detectives here at scotland yard are keen to stress that they do not believe daniel khalife poses a particular threat to the public. the charges he there are no signs of any i early breakthrough in this manhunt and in fact the immediate omens do not look that good because the best chances of catching someone after an escape is in the early hours cold. but counterterrorism command have a good reputation of getting their man, they can draw on enormous resources from their own network, and other police forces, border force and of course the security service m15 so they will remain optimistic that they will catch him. but because there are two investigations going on, the manhunt for the escaped prisoners and also the prison investigation what happened after an urgent call setup between the minister and is urgent call setup between the ministerand is in urgent call setup between the minister and is in govan and other senior prison service officials and tonight, an investigation launched as daniel mentioned to —— to try and work out what on earth happened and how and why this man was being held in a category b present rather than a high security category a prison but on top of that there is some politics brewing around all those. labour are making the claim that the government has driven the criminal justice system into the ground, that there is a problem as far as recruiting within the criminal justice system is concerned at the local mp, the local labour mp for the part of south london where the prison is has dredged up some statistics she got hold of six or seven months ago relating to a pitch to day at the end of last year and the rotor pattern for prison officers at wandsworth prison, suggesting that they were seriously understaffed, filling gaps in that rota. the government says that is just a snapshot and they have recruited more prison officers this year than they had last year. fiifi year than sent a video of the father and stepmother of sara sharif, the ten—year—old found dead at a house in woking last month, in which they claim they're willing to co—operate with british police. it's the couple's first public statement since they left the uk for pakistan — the day before sara's body was found on august 10th. it's a short video, and the couple focus mainly on the circumstances they now find themselves in. here's our pakistan correspondent, caroline davies. we are coming forward and presenting ourselves... four weeks to the day after they left the uk, this is the first we've heard from urfan sharif and beinash batool. they're wanted for questioning about the death of sara sharif, urfan*s ten—year—old daughter. she was found dead the day after they left for pakistan. pakistan police believe they travelled to the city othelum, on to a hamlet in the rural area of domeli. but from there, police say they lost the trail. firstly, i would like to talk about sara. sara's death was an incident... in the 2 minute 36 second video, this is the only mention of sara. our family in pakistan are severely affected by all that is going on. they are harassing my extended family. they have also illegally raided many more of my family members' homes. most is about the harassment the couple say their family are facing as the police search for them. they talk about a lawyer they have instructed in court to stop it. police have previously admitted detaining some family members for questioning and conducting raids. my main concern is that the pakistani police will torture or kill us — that is why we have gone into hiding. on this latest allegation of torture and violence, the police have been adamant, saying this is totally baseless. we don't know where this was filmed of the conditions it was filmed under but some details help us date it, including when their lawyer will next try to stop the alleged harassment. the next court hearing is on 19th september 2023... there, that's important because that decision was only made yesterday in court in rawalpindi, our team was there. that means this video must have be made in the course of the last day. most crucial is this element. lastly, we are willing to cooperate with the uk authorities and fight our case in court. tonight pakistan police say they still do not know where the family is. caroline davies, bbc news, islamabad. as we've been hearing, sara's body was found by officers in woking nearly four weeks ago. our correspondent greg mckenzie is here and surrey police issued a statement this evening, greg? that's right, following the release of the video statement, surrey police have issued a statement and they say that they were made aware of the video this morning, which suggests the family may be willing to cooperate with british authorities. surrey police say this is clearly significant and they have been liaising with international partners including interpol, the foreign and commonwealth and of element office, and the national crime agency to determine next steps and they go on to say that progressing these inquiries through the appropriate channels has to be handled carefully and sensitively. they go on to say that the welfare of the five children who travelled to pakistan on the 9th of august it a priority to them. this video that was issued from the father and the stepmother comes one day after the mother of sara gave an interview with polish television and here she is describing the moment she had to experience watching and seeing her dead daughter. translation: they had dressed her in mickey mouse pyjamas and she had a quilt over her, but no mother should see something like that. one of her cheeks was swollen and the other side was bruised. even now, when i close my eyes, i can see what my baby looked like. translation: it wasn't sara. she was entirely changed... ..and bruised. if someone hadn't told me it wasj sara, i wouldn't have believed it. the uk does not have an extradition treaty with pakistan and the investigation continues. fiifi treaty with pakistan and the investigation continues. 0k, many thanks, greg _ investigation continues. 0k, many thanks, ukraine's president zelensky, who blamed russia, said those killed were "people who did nothing wrong", and warned the death toll could increase. news of the attack came as the us secretary of state, anthony blinken, made a visit to kyiv. paul adams reports. explosion close to ukraine's eastern front lines, death falls from the sky without warning. 2pm in the afternoon, a row of shops in the town of kostiantynivka. they're used to attacks here but not on this scale. in the blast*s shocking aftermath, a search for the living and the dead. it's not immediately clear what kind of weapon landed here, but shrapnel tore into the road, into cars and people. translation: this is a civilian pharmacy. . at the time of the strike, civilians were here, buying medicines, and this is what happened. ukraine's president, as he has so many times before, sounded outraged. translation: we understand what they are doing, _ they did the same in the past. whenever there is any positive offensive step by ukraine's defence forces, russia targets civilians and civilian infrastructure. this was one of the worst attacks on ukrainian civilians since the spring. and it came as the us secretary of state, antony blinken, was here in kyiv pledging yet more support. his arrival, early this morning, was preceded once more by the sounds of war. air raid sirens wail. russia launching a fresh wave of attacks at dawn. kyiv*s well—drilled air defences called into action, keeping the capital safe. president zelensky, fresh from visiting troops at the front, gave his visitor a positive account of ukraine's recent advances. in the ongoing counteroffensive, progress has accelerated in the past few weeks. this new assistance will help sustain it and build further momentum. that may be but this grinding conflict continues to exact a terrible price. pauladams, bbc news, kyiv. scientists in israel say they have grown an entity that closely resembles an early human embryo without using sperm, eggs or a womb. they are hoping it could improve ivf success rates, help them understand miscarriage and even test which medicines are safe to use during pregnancy. but it raises ethical and legal questions too. our health and science correspondent james gallagher has more. this is a field that's been progressing rapidly, and has now reached a significant moment. take a second to think how remarkable it is that our lives start out like this — a single sperm fertilising a single egg. but the first steps on the journey from this to us are poorly understood and researching embryos is legally, ethically and technically fraught. so this is where embryo models come in, and this is how it's done. so, there are no sperm or eggs involved — instead, scientists start with human stem cells. these have the potential to become any type of tissue in our body. these are then transformed into the four types of cell you'd find in an embryo that was just one week old. then, 120 of them are mixed together, and you can see they start off as a jumble, but as they grow, this happens. they start to organise themselves, mimicking what a real embryo would look like 14 days after fertilisation. and we can take a look at one. now, this might appear confusing, i admit, but we can spot some things in here. the purple cells around the outside are the ones that would grow to form the placenta. and as we go inside, the yellow cells would create a yolk sac. and the blue cells would form, in a real embryo, a human being. now, of course, this isn't a real embryo. it's not possible to put this in a womb and make a baby. but it is similar. it even released hormones that made a pregnancy test turn positive in the lab. and that's what's exciting the research team in israel. yes, this does look like textbook and the structures are there and it looks really, really good. this is a stem cell derived entity that has all the subtypes, all the compartments, and in the right orientation, which hasn't been done before. for those struggling to start a family, this research may, one day, help. it could lead to new ideas for tackling infertility or improving ivf. and that's because these embryo models allow scientists to perform research that would be impossible on real embryos, to understand the crucial early moments of our development when miscarriage and birth defects often arise. they're not normal human embryos. they are embryo models. but they're very close to them. and so, should you regulate them in the same way as a normal human embryo, or can you be a bit more relaxed about how they are treated because they're not actually normal human embryos? you could not implant one of these in a woman because that would be illegal and they probably wouldn't work anyway. this field of research is advancing incredibly rapidly and has has left regulators playing catch—up. james gallagher reporting there. the government has published the list of schools in england affected by so—called crumbly concrete. 147 schools have been found to have raac — which is reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete — that is prone to collapse. 19 schools in england have had to delay the start of term because of the concrete crisis, and pupils at some 24 schools will have to get some form of remote learning. the government says the list is only up to date to 30 august, so the actual number is likely to be higher. here's our education editor, branwen jeffreys. this secondary school has been propping up raac panels for months. they had been told the risk was low, until a call last week saying the advice had changed. so this is the pe department at scalby school. as you can see, there's plenty of mitigation in place to support the raac ceiling that we have here. this was installed in the summer term last year. it's notjust the pe block. some of the science classrooms are affected too. it's very difficult to be optimistic about opening this part of the school at any time — if at all. and the just redecorated canteen. we're going to use our gymnasium and a marquee in order to do dining facilities. the school's bid to rebuild was turned down last year, so now it's temporary classrooms and online learning. a frustration at all counts. we didn't know about it. we didn't feel there was a risk. the last minute nature of it, and what this is actually doing to families. so for these teenagers at the school, a late start to term. they face gcses next year. we're being told that we're going back on monday but it could be a mixture of online learning. so it would be the case of when we're going back full—time. i if you're stuck and stuff it's notl like you can just ask the teacher, who's in front of you. so it's a lot harder— to understand the work and stuff. in 2010, this london school had funding for rebuilding pulled. one of 13 that missed out then but now have raac, leading to a row in parliament about whether cuts are to blame. it's the sort of thing you expect from cowboy builders, saying that everyone else is wrong, everyone else is to blame, protesting they've done an effing good job, even if the ceiling falls in. the difference, mr speaker, is that in this case, the cowboys are running the country! cheering the prime minister defended their record. exactly the kind of opportunism that we 've come to expect from captain hindsight over here. before...before today... before today, he's never once raised this issue with me ac
