the king and president make their way underneath the arc de triomphe, just in the position below where i am standing a few hundred metres away, we are seeing the republican guard battalions heading out towards the champs—elysees. this has been the first formal set piece event of this visit, just in the last 90 minutes or so, the king and green touched down in france, made their way to central paris, the roads have been closed for a good few hours here down the champs—elysees and around the arc de triomphe. this formal welcome was made by president macron and the events unfolded, the laying of the reef, the rekindling of the flame underneath the arc de triomphe. spectacular images which will baby much notjust across france but around the world. and i hope from both the french and uk government is that this is a very visual powerful way of expressing solidarity, friendship, unity... and the last couple of years since brexit, of course, have tested some of those themes and part of the aims certainly from both governments will be a show of unity. post—brexit. the two men met shaking hands, the two men will get a moment to themselves shortly and will have a formal bilateral meeting which means a chat between the two of them and what they will talk about we don't exactly know but there are themes uniting them, the war in ukraine, climate change, the economy, trade, the environment and we should get some sense of what they do actually talk about a little later on. the next step here will be a departure from the arc de triomphe where they will head down the champs—elysees to the elysee palace where they will have that meeting together. it's a shortjourney. the elysee palace is the presidential palace where president macron lives and works. and that is where we are broadcasting from, upper high balcony. and down below us we can see the horses are ready, the motorbikes are ready for the next stage of this visit. some of the cars are starting to move in advance. king charles smartening his hair, i am doing the same as it's pretty breezy here. thankfully the sun is shining. no rain expected today. but rain scheduled tomorrow. tomorrow is a busy day as well but for the momentjust focusing on the events here and heading down to the champs—elysees in a few minutes. that's it from me from the moment and i will be here in the heart of paris following every twist and turn of this state visit. i will hand you back to the studio. thank you. the government is facing anger over the car industry considered by the prime minister to delay a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. rishi sunak spoke to the cabinet this morning and it's better to make a speech in downing street later this afternoon. the car—maker ford said the proposal would undermine the government's consistency. here was our correspondent. rishi sunak is expected to make a significant guinness shift in how they are expecting to get to net—zero. they say it's just a route changing not the destination. he is takin: an changing not the destination. he is taking an approach _ changing not the destination. he is taking an approach of _ changing not the destination. he: 3 taking an approach of pragmatism and proportionality when it comes to delivering our net—zero commitments. it's right that he assesses the issue as a whole, taking into account people's bank balances, livelihoods and, ultimately, we won't save the country by bankrupting the british people. delaying measures such as bans on new oil and gas boilers has been called on by some conservative mps who agree it would be a burden on households. but the former cabinet minister saying here with the king and mr sunak is expected that mike among those worried it will cast votes and influence. some think mr sunak is missing the public mood. we know investment for the economy is -ood know investment for the economy is good for— know investment for the economy is good forjobs and the are his words, we cannot afford to fall to now or in any way lose our ambition for this country. this is as we know rishi sunak is appearing prepared to ditch someone key net—zero commitments. if because this is such a divisive issue that causes such passionate responses from right across the spectrum. it absolutely does. what's interesting todayis absolutely does. what's interesting today is what we are seeing is its causes divisive and passionate reactions within the conservative party on different sides of this debate. what rishi sunak has done by signalling what we are going to get at 4:30pm, has details of how he is going to shift on these climate change targets, is not only to try to open up and differentiate himself from the opposition which is saying it would stick to them, but also opening up arguments within his own side and that is a fairly politically risky thing and it's worth looking at what borisjohnson says because rishi sunak last night when he laid out what he was going to do here, he said for too long government have not been honest about the costs and trade—offs and taken the easy way out saying we can haveit taken the easy way out saying we can have it all. the government has put in place is targets that he is now weakening and notably borisjohnson who made a feature of his commitments to climate policies so interesting that we talked early today that boris johnson was interesting that we talked early today that borisjohnson was unhappy about this and we now have him saying coming out very clearly saying coming out very clearly saying businesses need certainty, the country has been leading on this, the green industrial revolution is helping to drive growth and level up, spread prosperity around the country, he says, business and industry, making big investments. they will bring a low carbon future at lower costs for british families. so he is taking aim at the very arguments rishi sunak is pulling out. but by pushing out targets that will help people by taking some of the costs off them. borisjohnson is as absolute narrow and little but other reaction is, that's exactly what we also heard elsewhere. we had other conservative mps who were sceptical about this saying they believe it will harm efforts to bring down things like the cost of electric cars and cost of cheap heating systems for homes. labour party saying they think this is a government in chaos, scrambling, the liberal democrats equally are being critical to, their leader said the government has trashed the economy of today and is now intent on trashing the economy of the future as well. some conservative mps are coming out in favour saying they think that these policies will benefit, pushing back these targets will benefit their constituents and welcome
