in caerphilly with van aert defending a three—second lead. that's all from sportsday. our top story, a huge win for ireland, the world's number one team at the rugby world cup, 80 points on romania. england start in 20 minutes against argentina in marseille. you are live with bbc news. morocco has declared three days of national mourning after 1,000 people died in a devastating earthquake. the six—point—eight magnitude quake struck a sparsely populated region in the atlas mountains on friday night. 45 miles south of marrakesh. peter mercer, who owns a riad in marrakech, escaped from the third floor of his building during the quake. he told us what happened. you don't practise for these things. and i've lived through an earthquake before, but i live on the third floor of the building and itjust started to shake, almost like a washing machine on the spin cycle when it suddenly gears up. but it violently shook the building and you just think, i've got to get out of here. so ijust literally ran out of the door, so going down three flights of stairs, just imagining the building is about to collapse on me. it was terrifying. when i got downstairs to the street, the street was full of people, but i'm english in morocco and the moroccans are speaking amongst themselves. and i did think for a minute, did that only happen to me? because no—one was actually saying, there's an earthquake. obviously, no—one is speaking in english, even in french, but then someone told me in french, "that was an earthquake". ok, so i didn't imagine it. but it was frightening. yeah, i stayed outside for several hours. i was following reports on the internet. there were three aftershocks, each one less powerful. so i took comfort from that, and they advised that there probably was not going to be another major one. but i stayed outside for three hours and then i did go back to my apartment and i went to sleep. but a lot of people stayed out all night in gardens, in open spaces, because they were scared to go into their homes. a lot of people live in apartment buildings three, four, five storeys high, and you don't want to be on the fifth floor if you have to get out quickly. peter mercer, in marrakesh. jamal imerhane is president of the asni commune, one of areas of the atlas mountains most impacted by the earthquake. he spoke to the bbc on the phone. i have never seen i have never seen an i have never seen an earthquake. yesterday, 11 o'clock in the evening, people shouting, screaming. running outside of their houses. it was really horrible. all the people now, they are losing their houses. more than 500 people died in the areas, a lot of people passed away and more than 100 injured. it is really horrible, really catastrophic in the villages in the atlas mountains. we turned to our local authorities and our ministers, they are doing a lot of effort to get access to the villages to help people. jamal imerhane, president of the asni commune. hundreds of emergency workers and soldiers continue to evacuate people from villages and towns affected by major flooding in central greece. they've been using boats and helicopters, which are also helping to supply cut—off settlements with food and drinking water. parts of the capital of the thessaly region, larissa, have been inundated, and there's a push to reinforce embankments of the pineios river. the flooding was caused by unprecedented rainfall brought by storm daniel earlier this week. our correspondent sofia bettiza who is in larissa — one of the towns most affected. she gave us the latest. there's a big search and rescue operation this morning in larissa in central greece. you can see behind me, two people have just been rescued and they are getting to safety. we have seen all morning volunteers getting on dinghies like this one, on boats, on canoes, and looking for people who are still stranded, stuck on rooftops, stuck on their balconies. he this rescue operation is extremely complicated. entire villages are without power. hundreds of people are still stranded. roads are damaged. and there are some villages that are entirely submerged by water. and that means that the authorities have been unable to reach some of the worst affected areas. there are several people still missing and the fear is that the death toll could go up. the greek prime minister, kyriakos mitsotakis, said that greece is facing an unequal battle with nature, and that he's going to do everything humanly possible to help with the emergency. sofia bettiza. the un secretary—general has called on countries in asia, africa, and the middle east to increase their co—operation in combatting sand and dust storms. experts say more than 2 billion tons of dust enter the atmosphere each year, affecting hundreds of millions of people, primarily farmers and others whose income depends on natural resources. antonio guterres was addressing a conference in teheran on the challenges the storms pose as climate change makes them more common and more severe. a football referee from merseyside has accused the fa of being weak after it watered down the punishment for a spectator who attacked him, following an under—7s match. adam sears was convicted this week of assault and threatening behaviour. but despite the conviction, the fa haven't banned him from attending games. andy gill reports. the aftermath of an abandoned under—7s football match in january this year. adam sears gets out of his car and punches an adult referee twice. for legal reasons, we can't identify the ref. physically for a couple of days, i was slightly concussed in my left here where he punched me in the air and i had to have an nhs assessment. left me shaken, thinking, did i want to continue playing and being involved in grassroots football any more? the incident started when sears threatened a teenage referee who was in charge of the under—7s match. that ref abandoned the game. the older ref officiating in another match nearby was alerted to the threats and spoke to coaches from one of the teams. that's when the assault happened. it's going too far and ultimately people are going to get hurt. the football season again starts this weekend for the juniors and i'm sure there'll be many numbers of incidents that we will see and hear about, whether it's threatening or actually physical attacks. adam sears was convicted of assault and threatening behaviour at sefton magistrates* court this week. initially, the fa banned adam sears from all football activity for five years, but after he appealed they said although he couldn't play, he could now attend matches. the referee whom adam sears attacked thinks the fa's response has been weak nothing short of poor. nothing short of poor. they need to put a bigger deterrent in place in order so they can highlight that these kinds of things have happened and they won't stand for it. but at the moment this has been diluted and this man will be free to go and watch football wherever he wants. in a statement, the fa didn't address this specific incident but said referees are the lifeblood of our game. it said they understand the challenges that some of them face and they've been very clear that all forms of abuse, whether on or off the pitch, are completely unacceptable. a referee support charity says the fa should not have diluted the sanction in this case. this should not be another missed moment. this should be a watershed moment to take the game to a place where it's safe for young boys and girls to take up refereeing. after a bbc survey, hundreds of grassroots refs said they'd been assaulted. and last october, merseyside youth football held a strike in protest at aggression to officials. andy gill. for more than nine months, the condition of freddie flintoff has been unknown, after the presenter and former cricketer was in a car crash whilst filming an episode of top gear. he has now been seen in public for the first time since the accident, asjoe inwood reports. very little was ever revealed about what happened to andrew flintoff, the cricketer they call "freddie". this is the first glimpse we have had of the injuries he suffered in a high—speed crash last december. some of those injuries today still evident. he was with the coaching staff to watch the england cricket team play new zealand. 120! this was his post—cricket career. his charisma, game attitude and chemistry with co—hosts paddy mcguinness and chris harris had helped revive the fortunes of one of the bbc*s biggest shows. then, the crash at the dunsfold park aerodrome that brought it all to a shuddering halt. freddie flintoff was airlifted to hospital, his injuries unknown. series 3a of top gear was ended. the bbc apologised and held an investigation. nothing more was heard or seen of freddie flintoff, until today. fans of the sportsman and tv presenter would be pleased to see him looking alive, well, and back where he belongs — at the cricket. joe inwood, bbc news. now it's time to take a look at the weather. hello there. if, like me, you're finding it too hot and humid, relief is on the way, but not for most of us until after the weekend. so it stays very warm, very muggy, there will be thundery showers and there are warnings out from the met office. more details on our website. but again, we'll have another day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees celsius. so again, the record is broken. today looks like it might well be the hottest day of the year so far, just getting a little bit ahead of thursday's 32.6 degrees celsius. widely warm, very warm, infact, and humid. temperatures not quite so high in the north and west, purely because we have this weather front approaching, so more cloud, bringing rain into the western and later northern isles, showers ahead of it. and this afternoon, because we have that mix of the heat as well, some home—grown downpours, torrential downpours continuing well into the evening. but quite well scattered. they could just cause some flash flooding locally. and then, even though they will ease away for a time overnight, we have more moving in from the south, pushing into the south and west. and again, just increasing that humidity. so another really close night and uncomfortable for sleeping, i should imagine, for quite a few. even further north, the humidity stays with us, that means for the great north run, not ideal conditions, with that high humidity. the increasing chance of a thundery shower as well for those running into the afternoon. so take on lots of water, if you can. so the shower risk tomorrow perhaps a bit further north than today. some torrential downpours, lots of lightning with those showers. and we have our weather front in the north and west. but in—between, lots of sunshine, still very warm and humid. so temperatures might not be quite widely as high as today, but it's still humid and muggy. perhaps still in east anglia and the south east, 31, 32 degrees celsius. through the evening and overnight, thundery showers move northwards and eastwards. our weather front is on the move as well, and it's behind that weather front where it is a little bit less humid, a fresherfeel for the north and west of scotland. and that, as we move through the course of monday and tuesday, i'm hopeful about the end of tuesday, we'll start to feel that slightly fresher air reaching southern and eastern areas. then we're back to business as usual, really, a more unsettled looking picture. live from london. this is bbc news. morocco has declared three days of national mourning, after a powerful earthquake left more than a thousand people dead, and hundreds more injured. and escaped prisoner daniel khalife — suspected of terror offences — is arrested by police in london, following a four—day search. ukrainian officials have criticised a joint declaration from members at the g20 summit, which they say watered down its condemnation of russia's invasion. hello and welcome, i'm catherine byaruhanga. we start in morocco, where more than 1,000 people have been killed in the earthquake that struck late on friday night. hospitals in the region have seen an influx of wounded people, and the authorities are calling on residents to donate blood.
