Thanks thomas. Also coming up the tv presenter Philip Schofield whos been married to hiw wife steph for 27 years comes out as gay. Hello everyone this is afternoon live. A gp from east london has been given three life sentences for 90 Sexual Offences against female patients. Manish shah, who assaulted 2a women including a 15 year old girl, was described as a master of deception by the judge at the old bailey. He was told hell have to serve a minimum of 15 years injail. The court had heard that shah exploited fears about cancer to persuade his patients to undergo unnecessary invasive examinations for his own gratification. Our correspondent Helena Wilkinson is at the old bailey. Quite a severe sentence for this gp. Yes, three life sentences. He will have to serve a minimum of 15 years before the parole board will assess when he will be released but this is a doctor who was practising at a gp surgery in east london and he was dot that he betrayed himself as a caring doctor id be very concerned one but behind the scenes he was, the court heard during two trials, exploiting his female patients for his own sexual gratification. The court heard intimate details about how manish shah carried out intrusive examinations when they we re intrusive examinations when they were not medically necessary. He also told some of his female patients that he had specialisms in areas he didnt so we could do certain procedures on them. He also put fear into the minds of celebrities with cancer. The judge said that he used a mixture of flattery and fear and abused his position of trust. After the sentencing, we spoke to the detective superintendent involved in the death investigation. I think the judge summed it up best. She said he was a master of deception, he used his position as a Family Doctor to access vulnerable woman to carry out unnecessary medical procedures, breaching their trust for his own sexual gratification. What impact has this mans behaviour had on the victims . It is clear it has had a long Lasting Impact. Many of his patients who he sexually assaulted, 90 against 2a of his patients, some of them the court heard were young, many vulnerable, and it has clearly had an impact. In court, one of his victims, his youngest at the time, she said when he visits this gp she shakes, she is fearful, she cannot see a male doctor any more. After manish shah was convicted, we spoke to one of his victims and we have protected her identity legal reasons. He abused their weaknesses, fears and take complete advantage. Not one time did i actually think that he was doing anything untoward. Many of those victims in court to hear the sentence today. Many are facing anxieties, some on medication for anxiety, and we also heard that some of them simply do not trust and have no confidence in going to their doctor any more. We judge you today said that they may never find out the real of manish shahs offending. Thank you. Another 41 people onboard a cruise ship offjapan including a british passenger have tested positive for coronavirus. Over three and a half thousand people and crew remain in quarantine in the port of yokohama in an attempt to control the spread of the disease. Cases of the virus, which originated in mainland china, have now been reported in more than 25 countries. In china, theres been a growing wave of grief and anger following the death of a doctor who tried to warn about coronavirus, but was told by the authorities to keep quiet. Heres our correspondent robin brant. Its stuck at the quayside and they are stuck on board. The diamond princess is a huge health hazard. Things are happening. Literally every hour, something is changing. The biggest, of course being, 41 additional passengers being found positive tested for coronavirus, one of whom is a friend of ours on honeymoon, who has been split from his wife on their honeymoon. He is being taken to a medicalfacility and she will have to remain on board. The cruise ship is the site of the biggest outbreak outside of china. This man is one of the passengers, one of thousands order ordered to their cabins a week ago. In addition to the face masks, we have also been given gloves so that if we go outside we have to wear them. I think that is a sensible precaution, especially if you are going to be touching hand rails or anything like that. In all, there are 3700 passengers and crew. 78 are known to be british. So far, 61 have tested positive for coronavirus, including one british man. He is on his honeymoon. In china, the epicentre city of wuhan is facing even more extreme measures. Daily temperature checks take place in every household. New makeshift hospitals to host new patients. All under quarantine. But, in this video posted on social media, which we have been unable to fully verify, people there complain of a lack of basic standards. As the death toll keeps rising, a doctor who treated patients early on is now one of the dead. He was just 34. His death is even more potent because he had tried to raise the alarm six weeks ago but he was punished by the police in china for spreading rumours. He is a hero. He was a brilliant doctor. He was very brave and honest to be a whistle blower. He gave his life for the sake of our country and he was very young. I am very sorry. He was not spreading rumours. The virus was out there. I hope the government will withdraw the reprimand. What my son said has now proved to be true. Two weeks into this national emergency, wuhan is a city completely cut off. Chinas leaders are calling it a war to defeat at the outbreak, and in that war some of the authorities are turning to this. This footage, apparently shot near shanghai, but not one we have been able to fully verify, shows officials forcibly removing people suspected of carrying the virus. Life in chinas commercial capital, like many others of its vast cities, is still on hold. Shanghai is normally home to 2a Million People but most of them are nowhere to be seen. Singapores government has raised the health alert from yellow to orange, in the wake of growing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. Its thought the third person in the uk to be diagnosed with the virus contracted it in the country. The foreign secretary dominic raab is due to visit on monday. Heres our correspondent karishma vaswani. Raising the health alert from yellow to orange means that Singapore Post authorities have now assessed that the coronavirus outbreak is severe and spreads easily from person to person. According to the government, the orange level classification means that there is no widespread transmission in singapore, and that is the key difference here between an orange and a red alert, and the virus is being contained. But the measures that companies, workers and students will now have to take are pretty far reaching. For instance, effective immediately, businesses are being asked to find different ways of working. For instance, getting staff to work from home if they can, or separating groups of people at work so you have smaller and more manageable groups that you can check in on if you need to. Employees like me, for instance, have to have their temperature checked twice a day when we enter our place of work and, if you are feeling unwell, with a cough called you have a fever, you have got to got to go to the doctor right away. Singapore is also suspending School Activities until the end of march. National school games and competitions. And event organisers are being told to cancel or defer nonessential large scale events. It means the singapore yacht show has already announced it is postponing its event until october. All this is to help prevent further cases of infection. Singapore has a small but dense population of around 5 Million People and the government is extremely concerned about the coronavirus infecting more people. The Health Watchdog is to review the case of a teenager with autism who threw a six year old boy from the tenth floor of tate modern in london. Jonty bravery is awaiting sentencing for attempted murder. The bbc has obtained a recording ofjonty bravery telling his carers he wanted to push someone off a Tall Building, a year before the attack. Our special correspondent lucy manning is here this will once again raise grave concerns about the system of care . That is right. He was in the care of hammersmith and fulham council. The ca re hammersmith and fulham council. The care company he was it was looking after them, they are a regulated care company and rated good by them. Serious questions about what happens to the information contained in this recording, what we know is that two ca re recording, what we know is that two care workers from spencer and arlington knew about the situation and heard him say this. It was recorded by them. One says he patted on two senior managers, but that is denied by them and buy spencer and arlington. Spencer and arlington say they have no knowledge or record of this exposure is my disclosure. The case review will be looking into seeing what happened to the information, but the policy at the moment is to try and get people with learning disabilities into the community, to take them out of institutions, and saw the experts think thatjust institutions, and saw the experts think that just not institutions, and saw the experts think thatjust not enough resources and training are going to help those people who are living in the community. One of the problems is that we spent such a lot of the money on institutional care and, we know, it is often abusive. Really, we should be ending that system and using that money for really effective care for the community. By that i mean properly training staff, a variety of homes, supported at home, supported living, but it is all around the individual and often individuals are fitted into what Community Facilities are there on offer. I think that is probably what happened here. How is the boy who was so badly injured . Everyone has been worried about his condition since that incident, he had multiple fractures and a bleat on the brain. His family has a fundraising website to raise money for his rehabilitation and a post update on that. In september they said he couldnt move his body or speak but a good smile. He does seem to making some process progress. People are starting to understand him and he can speak and he still cant stand or walk but he cant eat a bit of mash and they are hoping he can drink through a straw. The slow and painful process. The brother of Manchester Arena bomber salman abedi told police he was shocked by the attack and would have reported it if hed known what was going to happen, a jury has heard. Hashem abedi is on trial accused of assisting and encouraging his older brother salman who detonated a bomb outside the arena in may 2017, killing 22 people, charges which he denies. Dan johnson is at the old bailey for us. Tell us more about what has been happening in court. There were three particular areas of evidence that we re particular areas of evidence that were outlined for the jury here this morning. We had firstly a list of the 22 victims who died in that bombing back in may 2017. Each victim was named, some details were given of who they were and where they were from and what they were doing outside Manchester Arena that night. Some had been to the concert, some were parents turning up and waiting for their children, but the youngest victim was eight years old. This was an upsetting part of the evidence, particularly for some of the families of the victims and survivors who had been in court, dust, type either here or watching streaming of it, but that did the jury streaming of it, but that did the jury isjust the streaming of it, but that did the jury is just the idea streaming of it, but that did the jury isjust the idea of streaming of it, but that did the jury is just the idea of the sort of people who had been caught up in the attack i just how people who had been caught up in the attack ijust how deadly are devastating the bomb was. The jury was shown cctv footage of salman abedi, the older brother who detonated that balm, and his movements were tracked in the final 24 movements were tracked in the final 2a hours before he detonated the bomb. Cctv saw him coming out of the flat he collected red, collecting things to finish the bomb, and then checking out the Manchester Arena. Three times he went to that area before he returned that evening with the bomb in a large rucksack. That is when he detonated at 1039 as people were leaving the concert. The other evidence that was referred to was the statement that his brother hasem abedi gave to police last year. Is accused of assisting and encouraging his brotherfor that attack and hasem abedi gave a statement that he didnt know what was happening and that he had been shocked. I was shocked at my brother had done this and i feel bad for eve ryo ne had done this and i feel bad for everyone who was involved and i would never have thought my brother had this in him to do this to innocent people. I know nothing about the purchase storage, preparation or storage of the bomb. Thejury were preparation or storage of the bomb. The jury were told that there is detailed forensic evidence that links hasem abedi to the vehicles, the properties and the materials that were used in the construction of that bomb and they will get more of that bomb and they will get more of that bomb and they will get more of that detailed evidence when they return to court on monday. The prosecutor said that the jury will have to consider the credibility of some of the claims made in that statement i guess the overall body of evidence that he said you know know confront the defendant. Hasem abedi denies the charges. Youre watching afternoon live, these are our headlines. The itv presenter Phillip Schofield has revealed that hes gay. Speaking on his programme this morning, he said hed had the strength and support of his wife, to whom hes been married for almost 27 years, and also his two daughters. The presenter said hed suffered years of inner conflict. Sarah campbell reports. The programme he has hosted for almost two decades. It started very differently today. The programme he has hosted for almost two decades. Phillip schofields words were read by his co host and friend, holly willoughby. With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, i have been coming to terms with the fact that i am gay. This is something that has caused many heartbreaking conversations at home. I have been married for nearly 27 years and we have two beautiful grown up daughters. This will probably all come as something of a surprise and i understand, but only by facing this, by being honest, can i hope to find peace in my mind and a way forward. Please be kind, especially to my family. Philip. So. Wow. I think we willjust take a breath. I know that, i mean, reading that i can hear the pain in your voice and how difficult it is for you. Hiya Philip Schofield has been a familiar face to viewers since his beginnings on childrens bbc in the 1980s. He starred on the west end stage asjoseph and, more recently, as well as this morning, co hosts the itv programme dancing on ice. There was an outpouring of support for him across social media. The lgbt equality Charity Stonewall said it was an incredibly brave and moving announcement. David walliams said he had nothing but respect and admiration for him. I think that when a celebrity, someone of high profile, decides to come out, it raises attention to the issue that there are still many people out there who are unable to come out. I feel a little lighter but i also am very aware that there is no question that it causes pain and it causes upset. Phillip schofields relief at coming out was clear. The sentiment widely shared online is that he might help others do the same. Im joined by robert green from lgbt online newspaper pinknews. Thank you for coming in. In the year 2020, why is so much attention being paid to the story about phillip schofield . Phillip schofield is a national treasure, he is somebody we have known for the best part of 40 yea rs on have known for the best part of 40 years on our screens. He is a very public figure and he has been closeted for 40 years. We did not know he was a gay man. Naturally, u nfortu nately, know he was a gay man. Naturally, unfortunately, in the society when someone comes out it is big news. We are still in an age where there is inequality between cis gender and trans people, straight and lgbt people, so when someone does reveal their sexuality or gender identity, it is big news. The reaction has been very positive. But the words brave and courageous keeping used. Is that correct . It is debatable if the are the right words to use, but the are the right words to use, but the fact of the matter is he was holding a secret for a huge period of time and i cannot imagine what it must be like to be so famous, with such a Public Relationship, with children, to come out. The pressures of his career and his family relationships and friends, it is brave in that way because he was putting in a lot of things at risk. Fortu nately, putting in a lot of things at risk. Fortunately, there has been a huge wave of support. Spoke particularly about his wife and daughters, and widerfamily on about his wife and daughters, and wider family on both sides. He feels safely out in that respect, but how difficult is it for families to have to process the sort of information about somebody who is right at the centre of the family . Unfortunately, it isa centre of the family . Unfortunately, it is a difficult thing. From personal experience, i find it it is a difficult thing. From personal experience, ifind it very difficult to come out but fortu nately difficult to come out but fortunately i had a great family. That is not the case for all lgbt people. Even in the uk, people thesis elimination. People in the workplace at home and such. For his family, it is a difficult thing to process. It would be amazing if we lived in a world where people did not have to come out, that this wasnt a thing. He is famous because of his talent, i hope that we take away from this that Phillip Schofield, yes, he is a gay man but i hope that this week we do not refer to him as the gate presenter. What will change . Hopefully he will be happier and freer. It his personal life, you will feel liberated. I hope it does not impede his career in any way. I dont think it should, we live in an age where people should be able to be themselves, their sexuality and gender identity is a relevant and has no impact on the performance. I hope that it will only bring positivity to his life. Thank you. The west ham united womens captain Gilly Flaherty has urged anybody struggling with their Mental Health to talk about it after publicly revealing for the first time that she tried to take her own life 11 years ago. Speaking to the bbcs football focus, the 28 year old says she was struggling with revealing her sexuality to her parents, and finding it difficult to cope with the demands on her life at the time. Jo currie reports. A leader on the pitch, Gilly Flaherty has played on the biggest stages and in front of huge crowds. But behind the public face life has not always been so comfortable for the west ham captain. 11 years ago, the defender tried to take her own life. It was so sad now when i think about it because i should have spoken to my mum and dad, do you know what i mean . I remember going to my hospital and my mum and dad coming in and crying. Ijust felt like id let everybody down. But the reason for me doing it was because i couldnt cope. She was struggling with her sexuality as well as the pressures of college and football. It led to the then 17 year olds taking an overdose, something she says was a wake up call. I dont believe now, how i am, i would never, ever consider it again. It never comes in my mind. Ive been through a lot of hard times back then and i would never ever see that as an answer. She has lifted trophies in her career and played for england. But she admits she has never opened up about what happened until now. How surprised do you think your team mates and maybe other friends and family will be to watch this video and realise what you went through . Yeah, i think they will be shocked. They probably wont expect it from me of all people. Iam bubbly, do you know i mean . I am outgoing. I am always smiling and always happy. That is how i am now but that is not how i was 11 years ago. I will probably be the last person they were expected from. This is why it speaks volumes and why i had to say it because we need to talk about it and we need to let people know, listen, if i can get my head out of that and get myself out of that and save myself, anybody can. Flaherty says she hopes by speaking out and encouraging others to speak out, her story can offer hope to those struggling with their Mental Health. Joe corrie, bbc news, east london. And if youd like more information on the issues raised in that report you can go to the bbc action line. Thats at bbc. Co. Uk action line. Time for a look at the weather. We know the name of storm ciara, tells about it. The best advice that this weekend umbrellas will not be useful. I cant tell you 100 how bad things are going to get. It is 48 hours away and i will show you where it is right now. It is a long way off so there could be subtle changes to the forecast. If we pan across the atlantic, this art of cloud, this is storm ciara. It has been affecting the eastern seaboard of the United States. In florida, there was 150,000 people without power. In other parts of the United States, we have had snow. It has been a whole lot of rough weather. I will show you footage that has come in. There has been flooding in places, i am in. There has been flooding in places, iam not in. There has been flooding in places, i am not sure what town or city business, but these are the types of effects we have seen in the us. 48 hours in advance, the storm has potential of causing problems, and these kind of scenes, it is not impossible we will be seen this in the uk. What is going to happen, you rough weather on the eastern seaboard is going to be propelled by a terrifically powerfuljet stream of unusually strong. This is a year, and it should make landfall on sunday and affect all part of the uk and the reason we are flooding this up and the reason we are flooding this up more than normal is because it has been a while since we have seen strong winds in all parts of the country. This is a long cold front and it shows you the size of the storm. Storms can be quite small but still produce very powerfully wins locally, 100 winds, this one is a very large storm which means it will affect the top and tail of the country. Whether you are in the north of scotland on the isle of wight, even france or scandinavia, they are all likely to see these severe deals. Severe deals widely across the uk, and we will have heavy rain as early as 24 hours in advance and it is safe to say that there will be some disruption. Before you tell is the forecast in detail, is there any chance that something could throw it off track a bit so that we dont get hit by the worst of it . Very good question. We are still 48 hours away and we are looking at all the different computer models were all the different suites of strong winds are going, this far in advance things can change. Subtle differences and inaccuracies in measuring the storm at the other side of the atlantic may be amplified and, by the time it reaches us, it be 100 miles further south. The point is, it is a large storm, so why do we get the 60 mph wind or eating out per hour plus wins, we are still within the area of danger if you like. Let us get into the main forecast. It is the calm before the storm. We have had some sunshine. This is the onset of the unsettled weather and through the unsettled weather and through the course of saturday night we will see winds are strengthening across western pa rt of see winds are strengthening across western part of the uk and showers on and off, but generally speaking it is going to be a relatively quiet night. Through saturday, this is not the storm itself, this is actually an area of nasty weatherjust ahead of the storms arrival. There will be heavy rain in belfast and glasgow and edinburgh. Through the course of sunday, this is the storm that i was sure you earlier on. This is what will rejoice. Storm ciara will strong gales to the uk. We did things with strong winds is that the rain rushed through quickly, which is one positive thing to point out. These wins, 60 mph is probably ill wind that will be gusting quite widely across the uk and the 60 mph is going to be realised widely across this yellow warning from the met office. The 80 mph winds, a lot we re met office. The 80 mph winds, a lot were damaging, will be experienced to some coastal areas and some hills. The met office is fairly confident that perhaps this south eastern portion of the country is more likely to get the 80 mph winds, but this morning year could shift slightly. It could become bigger or a she stay the same, it depends on where the strong winds are going to be moving during the course of sunday. Any changes to the weather forecast in advance of the storm. If you are familiar with isobars, this is next week. There are isobars, this is next week. There a re lots of isobars, this is next week. There are lots of isobars and areas of snow affecting scotland, so the advice is that even into next week there is a risk of severe deals across the uk. We are in no mean we across the uk. We are in no mean we we are not out of the woods yet. It is definitely the most widespread and strongest spell of strong winds that we will have seen so far this winter. With the common phrase, batten down the hatches. This is bbc news our latest headlines. Sport now on afternoon live with jane and weve had englands men and women cricketers in action how are they getting on . Not how are they getting on . Much progress in the me it not much progress in the mens game. It has been very frustrating in durban. Rain delayed the start having as Second One Day International against south africa. They got about an hour before they had to come off again injust they got about an hour before they had to come off again in just the seventh over. England did win the toss and they elected to bowl. They did takea toss and they elected to bowl. They did take a wicket, captain quentin the cot did take a wicket, captain quentin the cot quinton de kock. Byjoe root. England lost the first one day in the three match series by seven wickets. Better news for england women theyre in melbourne playing india in the t20 tri series theyve beaten them by four wickets. Player of the match anya shrubsole, who took three of them, said it wasnt one of the prettiest games of cricket but it means their t20 tri series hopes stay alive. England were chasing 124 for victory and nat sivver helped them on their way with a half century. With Lauren Winfield hitting the winning runs, as they made it with seven balls to spare. If australia beat india tomorrow, well have an england australia final next week. And we are heading into the second weekend of the six nations and the tough challenge for wales . Dont forget, wales have a new coach after 13 years of warren gatland, wayne pivac has taken over. This is his first tournament and while they had a convincing win over italy, pivac has said their match against ireland tomorrow will be the biggest test of his coaching career. Wales are the holders of the title and they began their defence with a huge victory over italy, winning by 42 0 but they are in dublin this weekend and wales havent beaten the irish in dublin in this competition for eight years. So pivac is very aware of that, plus the fact he is a new head coach. It will be a massive step up from what we have had so far, i think we have been very fortunate in that we have the barbarians game to iron out a few things and then we have a good competition match against italy. Now we go up against a much sterner challenge in their backyard. I think it has built nicely and this will be a real test of so far to see where were at and how much work weve got to do to be able to play the game we want to play under pressure. The british heavyweight title fight between Daniel Dubois and joejoyce, which could be a world title eliminator, will be at the 02 arena in london on the 11th of april. Prince andrew has asked to defer an honorary military promotion, which he was due to receive when he turned 60. The duke of york was set to be promoted to admiral later this month but Buckingham Palace has requested that the ministry of defence defer the move until he returns to public duties. The prince stepped back from his public role in november, after a backlash over his friendship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. John mcmanus reports. Following a career in which he famously saw action during the falklands war, the duke of york retired from the navy in 2001. But it is a tradition that senior members of the royal family continue to receive military promotions as they get older, even if, in reality, they were never going to advance to the very highest levels of command. Prince andrew was set to follow his siblings charles and anne, and become an admiral when he turned 60 on february 19. But Buckingham Palace says the prince has asked the ministry of defence to defer his promotion for now. In a statement, the palace said. It appears that the duke may still intend to accept the promotion in the future, perhaps when, or if, the backlash against his friendship with the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein dies down. For now, andrew remains very much a nonworking royal, even though his official website still says he is. But in a further sign of his now diminished status, the government has told local councils that they are not required to fly the union flag on his birthday, as they do for other senior royals. Westminster abbey says it will still ring the bells to mark his seventh decade. John mcmanus, bbc news. First a look at the headlines on afternoon live. A gp who committed dozens of sex offences against former patients at his surgery has been given three life sentences with a minimum term of 15 years. A British National on board a quarantined ship injapan has tested positive for coronavirus. So far 61 passengers have taken ill. The teenager who threw a young child off a balcony in londons tate gallery. A serious case review is under way after the bbc obtained a recording of him telling his carers he wanted to push someone off of a Tall Building a year before the attack. Now with all the business new heres alice baxer in birmingham. Hello. You join me in the middle of a very sunny Birmingham City centre. We are all in high vizjackets because we are on a construction site, for what is going to be a 30 story high office block. It will be the tallest outside of london here in the uk. We are here to Mark National apprenticeship week, a chance to celebrate the reach and diversity opportunities open to apprentices right across the country huge swathe of industries. Construction is an industry reliant on apprentices. I am joined by three people who are apprentices on this scheme. I am joined people who are apprentices on this scheme. Iamjoined by people who are apprentices on this scheme. I am joined by breanna, joe and brad and also paul, who is head of Apprenticeship Programmes and apprenticeship manager at the couegein apprenticeship manager at the college in london. How are you enjoying your Apprenticeship Scheme, you are all in year number one . Yes, we started in september but it has been amazing. We are getting the experience and college at the same time. I have been on site in rugby at school. We have been going through that. Myjob there is to snag in so i have been looking at the different subcontractors, making sure everything is going to plan and working with a range of people you would never meet if you are at university because she would just be sitting in a classroom. But i am on site and getting the best experience. We often talk about a skills shortage, not getting the right people in and the lack of diversity. How are you finding it as a woman on the course, are there many females up the ranks you can look up to as a mentor . There is a couple of site managers, but the site i am on it is very male orientated. It is a push for me to show them it is notjust a mans job, the ladies can do it as well. It isa job, the ladies can do it as well. It is a push. So, yes. Fantastic. Joe, you did well in your a levels, so what made you want to go down the apprenticeship route apart from university to do surveying, which was one of your options . |j considered was one of your options . considered going to university, but an apprenticeship is such a better option. The people are great, they are industry experts, they have a wealth of knowledge and if you give them the time of day they will tell you everything you need to know. It is so much different to college. Any question you have, they will answer it with detail. Similar question to you, brad. Did you everthink it with detail. Similar question to you, brad. Did you ever think of doing anything else and where do you see yourself in ten years after doing this course . To be honest, i would not consider anything else. I have wanted to get into construction andl have wanted to get into construction and i felt the best way is to learn on the job, rather than in a classroom because i dont always learn best in the classroom. I feel like i can pick up more on site and learn it quickly. Hopefully within the next ten years, i hopefully will have completed all the relevant qualifications and climbing up the ladder. Is there anything you could think of being improved on the Apprenticeship Scheme . No, ifi am honest. We have six months on site, a month in the classroom a college andl a month in the classroom a college and i prefer it that way. I have previously done my level three when i was on day release. I had two days couege i was on day release. I had two days college and three days on site. It seemed to break up my week too much andl seemed to break up my week too much and i couldnt get any work done. People think being an apprentice isnt that important, but we are pushed to make sure we have a strict role. You have all said it is the classroom based learning you sometimes find the least useful, paul, what is your solution as a teacher . They are all fresh out of school, they might not have liked school, they might not have liked school so much. We need to teach in the classroom sometimes, but Digital Media is the way forward. The open university hasnt had classrooms, so these gentlemen and ladies can study when they want, how they want by using Digital Media and talking to people on instagram, as a recruiting tool. I have done the same thing with youtube and other media sites. Ican with youtube and other media sites. I can teach when i want and when they want to learn. Todays world is digitally a more driven. Utilising technology, moving with the future. Many thanks to all of you, we will be here all day talking about apprenticeships in the Construction Industry and elsewhere. But for now, back to the studio. Alice, thank you very much. This sunday, hollywoods finest will be walking down the red carpet at this years oscars some for the very first time. Among them will be brits nominated for awards ranging from best director to best visual effects, as sophie long has been finding out. Its this weekend, hollywoods biggest night of the year, and the buzz is building, but imagine what it feels like to learn youre going to be one of the people to walk or glide up this red carpet on sunday, especially if its for the very first time. It really was unexpected. I was in a kind of laughing, crying, state , and i hadnt expected to feel quite so emotional about it. I am a cynic about it all. The whole thing was crazy. Im on a plane and i cant go anywhere so i tell the air stewardess and she tells everybody else and itsjust like madness, and they brought a little plate of food, they wrote congratulations on a note. It was special. Ive been grinning ear to ear since last monday when sandy called to let me know i would be nominated, so its amazing. Im terrible, imjust a child at heart. I love this experience. Ive never lost that thrill, oh, my gosh, im sitting next to dicaprio, or there is al pacino. I am grinning because he is grinning itsjust as exciting as the first time. But the first time is pretty amazing. There is a magic to it. It means so much and its something that, you know, its an event in your life, like the world cup or something. And its notjust the recognition of ones peers. The award, the honour. Its the company you get to keep. It would be amazing to meet Robert De Niro or meet al pacino. These are people i grew up with, as well as any of todays. Margot robbie, would be lovely to meet margot robbie. Quentin tarantino is a great director, i would love to meet him. Brad pitt, iwouldnt mind meeting him i dont think hes going to want to meet me. I look forward to seeing people i havent seen for a while, its really nice. Its a celebration of film and i dont look at it any other way. Brad pitt, its a bit strange because he is like a proper film star. This is the green room where stars will come before going on stage to reveal the winners and present the awards. 0r where the winners might come if they need to take a moment. But how do they prepare . They mustve written speeches. Rehearsing your 0scar acceptance speech with or without tears is what normal people do when theyre bored, right . Its personal, you know. I did actually write something once. Ive never done it since. I know that there are people i have to say thank you to. Its not a long list because you always want to keep those things short. Thats the thing. I already told myself there is no chance i will win so whatever happens will be a bonus. My heart is already beating a little faster knowing that i might have to get up on that stage. I kind of think its just better to be spontaneous and just feel the moment and hopefully dont forget people. I darent think i will ever have to get up there. I will speak from the heart but it tends to be what ive doing in the last few years, just speak from the heart. Whatever they say. However they say it. Anyone who walks away from here with a gold statuette will have their pick of the afterparties. 0scar opens a lot of doors. Sophie long, bbc news, hollywood. Scientists say that the bumblebee populations in europe and in north america are in drastic decline, because of more frequent extremes of temperature. Research based on Data Collected over a century, and published in thejournal science, suggests that some species could be wiped out within a few decades. 0ur science correspondent helen briggs reports. The world is getting hotter. It is notjust humans feeling the effects. Scientists say bumblebees cant cope with extreme weather and are dying out. What we have shown with this research is that the increasing heat waves and droughts we are seeing with Climate Change causing very large declines in populations of bumblebees. This is important partly because bumblebees are pollinators of wild flowers, and so we expect these declines of bumblebees to have a very important effects on the wider ecosystems of which they are a part. But also, the declines are important for humans. Bumblebees play a key role in pollinating wildflowers and crops such as tomatoes, squash and blueberries. Without them, some crops could fail, reducing food for us and countless other species. Bees and other insects provide pollination worth almost £700 million a year to british agriculture, according to the National Farmers union. But loss of habitat to farmland is also a threat. Scientists say their research can be used to predict where these might go extinct in the hope we can do something about it, such as growing wildflowers at the edge of fields. We have already lost two species of bumblebee in the uk and this new report once more could follow. Helen briggs, bbc news. Police arrested three men in connection with the theft earlier this week, and have now released two of them. The mural itself has not been recovered. A gp from east london has been given three life sentences for 90 Sexual Offences against female patients. Manish shah, who assaulted 24 women including a 15 year old girl, was described as a master of deception by the judge at the old bailey. He was told hell have to serve a minimum of 15 years injail. The court had heard that shah exploited fears about cancer to persuade his patients to undergo unnecessary invasive examinations for his own gratification. Our correspondent Helena Wilkinson is at the old bailey. Quite a severe sentence he quite a severe sentence he is quite a severe sentence he is facing . Yes years, three life sentences for 90 Sexual Assault on his female patients. He has to serve a minimum of 15 years, at that point the parole board will assess him and it will be up to them to decide when he can be released. Manish shah portrayed himself as a caring doctor at his surgery in South East London but behind the scenes, he was actually exploiting his female patients for his own sexual gratification. We heard that he carried out intimate and personal examinations, ones that did not have to be carried out on his female patients. We also heard that he made women believe that he had special expertise. He also mentioned to some of them some high profile celebrities who had been diagnosed with cancer, in order to put fear into their minds. Many of them were young and vulnerable women. The judge, unsaid to sing, said he used a mix of flattery and abused his position of trust. His behaviour was not only sexual but driven by his desire to control and according to thejudge, humiliate desire to control and according to the judge, humiliate women. Desire to control and according to thejudge, humiliate women. We desire to control and according to the judge, humiliate women. We spoke to be detective superintendent of the case. I think the judge summed it up best. She said he was a master of deception, he used his position as a Family Doctor to access vulnerable woman to carry out unnecessary medical procedures, breaching their trust for his own sexual gratification. What have the victim said about the impact his behaviour had on them . It has had a huge impact on them, many we re has had a huge impact on them, many were young and vulnerable. The judge today said he picked the victims because of that, they were vulnerable when they went to see him at his gp surgery. We had from his youngest victim in court today who told the court that after she was sexually assaulted by him, when she visits the doctor know she shakes, is very fearful, she is mistrustful, so it has had a huge impact on her. After manish shah was convicted in december of last year, that was his second trial, we spoke to another of his victims. Her identity is protected. He used our weaknesses, fears and take complete advantage. Not one time did i actually think that he was doing anything untoward. The prosecution said that it was a very similar scene for all of manish shahs victims, often suffering from anxiety, some on medication for anxiety. There was one victim who became pregnant as she was so fea rful of became pregnant as she was so fearful of going to her gp that she, from time to time, did not visit when she was meant to. A huge and long Lasting Impact after the Sexual Assault by manish shah and we also heard from thejudge assault by manish shah and we also heard from the judge who said that we may not know the full scale of his offending. Thank you very much. This man is one of the passengers, one of thousands ordered to their cabins a week ago. Daily temperature checks take place in every household and new makeshift hospitals to house new patients. Shanghai is normally home to 24 Million People but most of them are nowhere to be seen. Raising the health alert from yellow to orange means that Singapore Post singapores authorities have now assessed that the coronavirus outbreak is severe and spreads easily from person to person. A serious case review is set to look at new information in the the case of a teenager with autism who threw a six year old boy from the tenth floor of tate modern in london. Jonty bravery is awaiting sentencing for attempted murder. The bbc has obtained a recording ofjonty bravery telling his carers he wanted to push someone off a Tall Building, a year before the attack. Our special correspondent lucy manning says the recording will raise serious concerns about the quality of the care system. He was in the care of hammersmith and fulham council. The care company that was looking afterjonty bravery, spencer and arlington, they are a regulated care company. It is not like the are unregulated, the are regulated good by the care regulator, but serious questions about what happened to the information contained in this recording, what we know is that two care workers from spencer and arlington knew about this information and heard jonty bravery say this. One of them recorded it. One says that he passed it on to senior managers, that is denied by them and by spencer and arlington. Spencer and arlington say they have no knowledge or records about this disclosure, but it does raise the wider questions and the serious case review will be looking into this to see what happened to the information. But the policy at the moment is to try and get people with learning disabilities into the community, to take them out of institutions, and some of the experts think that just not enough resources and training are going to help those people who are living in the community. Sir stephen bubb who led the review. How is the boy who was so badly injured . Well, i think everyone has been worried about the boys condition since that incident. It was very serious. He had a bleed on the brain and multiple fractures. His family have a fundraising website that raises money for his rehabilitation at the post updates on that, so initially in september they were saying that he could not move his body, he could not speak, but he was able to smile. Then he does seem to be making some progress. They say he is able to see if you words, to speak a little, they are starting to understand him, and although the latest update was a couple of weeks ago, he still cannot stand or walk. They say he is able to eat a little mash at theyre hoping he can drink through a straw soon. Slow and painful progress. Youre watching afternoon live, these are our headlines a gp who committed dozens of sex offences against former patients at his surgery has been given three life sentences with a minimum term of 15 years. What the old bailey for us. Has been happening in court . Three what has been happening in court . Three particular areas of evidence have been outlined for the jury here today, starting with details of the 22 people who lost their lives in that bombing. The youngest was eight yea rs that bombing. The youngest was eight years old. The juries that bombing. The youngest was eight years old. Thejuries heard that bombing. The youngest was eight years old. The juries heard the names and backgrounds and reasons for being there of the 22 victims. Some had been attending the concert, some where they are to pick up their children who had been at the concert. The bomb was detonated as people are leaving. The details were upsetting, especially for families of victims in court and some of the survivors, either here at the old bailey or watching the proceedings backin bailey or watching the proceedings back in manchester. That was a poignant list that the prosecutor went through. The jury then saw images of Salman Abedis lata 24 hours before you detonated the bomb. He went around manchester, gathering the last components he needed, and he visited the arena three times before he went that evening, essentially checking how you would get there and scoping out what the area was like. The jury also heard details of the way to actually put the bomb together, using a paint attempt that was filled with explosives, packed inside a canister that was filled with nuts to act as shrapnel. It was concealed in a rucksack with the wire and the battery and a switch to detonate with. They saw images of his final journey across manchester, from his flat and up into the area outside the arena. He sat waiting there for an hour, waiting for it to get busy as people waited, and the jury found saw the final image recorded at 10 31pm, 15 seconds before you detonated the bomb, killing 22 and injuring hundreds more. Thejury heard some of the details against hashem abedi, his younger brother. There is detailed forensic evidence that links him to the plans and preparations of salman abedi. He is linked to the properties and vehicles and some of the components used in putting the bomb together. We heard for the first time some of the defence that hashem abedi is going to mount in the trial. He told police in a statement, he had no idea what his brother was planning it was shocked that his brother had done this. He said he was sorry for eve ryo ne done this. He said he was sorry for everyone who was involved and he never thought his brother had that in him to do that to innocent people. He said if he had any idea you would have reported it to his pa rents you would have reported it to his parents and denied having any extremist views himself and had no sympathy is with isis. He said that he had no knowledge of any home made explosives, and he believed that the screws and nuts and meals be bought together at work to do up the garden shed. The prosecution barrister said to thejury shed. The prosecution barrister said to the jury that you will undoubtedly wish to favour his words in lieu of the massive body of evidence. Hashem abedi pleads not guilty to his charges. The World Health Organization are holding a press co nfe re nce Health Organization are holding a press conference in geneva to update us on press conference in geneva to update us on the coronavirus that began in china. We have been hearing that there is a big concern about the shortage of special equipment. The World Health Organization have spoken to Logistics Providers to ensure that protective supplies get to those who need them first. The priority is Health Care Workers who are doing with those infected. They need to be managed. What we need to do is get everyone focused and ensure we are prioritising. It is not all the supplies, we just need to start looking at what is the minimalamount of to start looking at what is the minimal amount of supplies that needs to be protected and directed to those institutions and systems that require it for the next number of months. That should not be too ha rd to of months. That should not be too hard to do, there is still plenty of money to be made, but we need to make sure that the right material goes to the right people at the right time and that is something that the public and the private sector can stand together on. We muck are you discouraging the people we muck. You have seen the type of masks that people wear, in public, surgical mask. We are talking here about about particular types of masks, masks that are designed for use in clinical environments. Those are the mass we need, the protective gear people use. You have seen them on the tv. Surgical masks and other things, we have our own views. Masks dont necessarily protect you, be given a false sense of security, but they do help if you give it to someone else. They provide a sense of safety and a sense of assurance and that allows people to move and go to the shop, we are not going to see airey about that. If we start to see airey about that. If we start to see the normal civilian market being flooded with other respirator type masks and we see doctors and nurses in hospitals not having them, there isa in hospitals not having them, there is a problem. Shamima begum, one of three schoolgirls who went to syria to join the Islamic State group, has lost the first stage of her appeal against moves to remove her british citizenship. Her lawyers argued the decision of the then home secretary sajid javid rendered her stateless. Theyve described todays decision as baffling and say they will launch an appeal. Ms begum left the uk with two friends in 2015 at the age of 15. She is now in a syrian refugee camp. The Scout Association has been heavily criticised by a coroner, following the death of a 16 year old who fell from a cliff in north wales. Ben leonard, from stockport in greater manchester, died after falling from the great orme in conwy in august 2018. Our wales correspondent Hywel Griffithjoins me now from our cardiff newsroom. Tell us how ben died. Tragically this happened back in august 2018 when ben was on a scouting trip to north wales and had been capping the night before and was due to walk up snowdon. Because of weather, the plan was changed. Ben and two of his friends took a separate task pass to others, leaders saw them, when we got to the top of the hill they were on their own undecided on their own route back down. In the inquest, none of this scout leaders knew they we re none of this scout leaders knew they were worse, id even when they did realise that no one was with the boys, no immediate action was taken. Tragically, ben slipped and fell 200 feet off a cliff. His friend saw him fall and saw him at the bottom of the road. He lost his life in that way, but the inquest is focusing on the feelings of the Scout Association and the lack of supervision and planning that went into that day. What has the coroner said . He has been scathing. He issued a report to try and start stop other deaths and get the Scout Association to respond to him in the next 56 days. He is pointed out there was no Risk Assessment that they are not an understanding of what a Risk Assessment entailed, no supervision, no instruction to the boys, and he has pretty angry by the evidence given by the Scout Association because they did not reveal in the inquest that the other leaders had been put on restricted duties since. He had to dismiss the jury duties since. He had to dismiss the jury so the inquest will be heard again. The onus will be put on the Scout Association to make sure that no more deaths happen. They say that the lives of be put at risk by the Scout Association due to the inadequacies of their operational practices on the part this is played in the death of ben. Thank you very much. Storm ciara is still on the other side of the atlantic. This is where we are right now. There are areas of bad weather here, but this large art of cloud that you can see, just exiting eastern parts of canada and affecting the eastern seaboard, folks in the us have been feeling the effects of the storm. In florida, over 100,000 people are without power. We have seen damage across the eastern seaboard and snow during the week. This storm is causing problems and this is from the eastern state, you can see flooding year. Obviously strong winds are bringing power lines down, trees down as well. I am afraid to say that these kinds of scenes could be repeated here in the uk as well. The reason this storm is going to be so powerful is our friend the jet stream. It is boring between 200 and 250 mph at the height of aeroplanes and the farce of the jet stream blows the stronger it seems to spawn these weather systems. It is a very large storm. Sometimes it can be small, other times large. This is the Yellow Met Office warning. Only skill to yellow, amber to red. Yellow is the lower scale of warning. That does not mean that the winds arent going to be that bad, it also expresses it expresses an uncertainty. There will possibly be damage and disruption, the kind of things that affect you and me, so obviously the whole country is highlighted in yellow. We zoom into this origin area here, that is the next scale up. Does that mean that the winds across this part of the country are going to be worse than western wales or the south west . The a nswer western wales or the south west . The answer is not necessarily, what it means is that the met office at this stage is more confident that all strengths of wins will be realised here. That means that this could change as we go through the course of the night and into tomorrow. The ship could shift or it might not change. Some of the conditions could be quite unpleasant across the country . Yes, the last time we saw deals of this strength widely across the uk, you have to go back to around 2007, so it is quite a while back and it is a storm that affected in large part of europe. Coastal areas do get big gusts but it is not often that we see this. This warning slate year, storm ciara, this is a general blue point for hours across the uk. Severe gales are moving that these winds are in excess of 60 mph. On top of that, weve also got big waves on the way. Those wins may be strong but we will only last into next week. At the moment, it is quite quiet. This is friday night, with some showers coming through, the beginning of this storm ciara. Early on saturday morning, nothing too bad, a lot of his waking up to sunshine, but later on saturday we start to see the weather going downhill here in the north west. This is storm ciara, an area of bad weather in advance of storm ciara, which will bring heavy rain to Northern Ireland and western scotland. So the course of saturday night, there will be a brief lull of a few hours before the main weather system impacts the uk. That is what the yellow warning of the met office is too extensive for. The area is Gale Force Winds i was recovering, thatis Gale Force Winds i was recovering, that is where the sweep of wind is going to go. That is uncertain. Many of us will see gusts up to 60 mph, enough to bring trees down and damaged power lines. 80 mph gusts are more impactful, the higher that number goes up more damage potential disruption we get, and the thinking is that these higher values will be around coastal areas and hills. Fingers crossed we want to get those high values inland. The thinking is that the storm will move out of the way through monday night into a lot of isobars here, so that is an indication of the winds remaining strong and on top of that we have snow showers moving into scotland. Some of us are in for a pretty rough week and next week is showing potential for Gale Force Winds, perhaps those of you deals as well, but at the moment we worse do is going to be that saturday sunday time frame on get storm ciara. France host italy in paris on sunday thats widely predicted to be a france win. But the other match will be a cracker, the calcutta cup, scotland against england at murrayfield tomorrow. The west ham womens captain Gilly Flaherty, has been speaking to the bbc about her struggles with Mental Health. Shes said that she tried to take her own life 11 years ago. For a number of reasons, one of them, as she was coming to terms with her sexuality. Flaherty is such a strong character, on and off the pitch. One of those cases where youd never think she had been battling with inner demons. She says that this was one of the reasons she wanted to speak out, because sometimes its the people who seem very strong on the outside who need to talk about problems. She hoped speaking out would help others. I will never go down that road again andi i will never go down that road again and i am i will never go down that road again andiama i will never go down that road again and i am a lot stronger. Never in the 11 years since then have i considered taking my life again. I know if i went back and felt that way i would talk to my mum and dad. I talk to my mum and dad about everything, i talked to my sisters about everything, i talk to my partner about everything. You need to find that person, whether it be close family or friends, you have to talk. The uk has appointed a new ambassador to the United States. Dame karen pierce, who is currently the uks ambassador to the united nations, is the first woman to take the role. Her predecessor, kim darroch, stepped down when he was sidelined by president trump. Dame karen said she hoped to strengthen the special relationship between the countries. Our Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale is here. Wind back a bit and remind us why we need a new ambassador to the us . Lastjuly, some need a new ambassador to the us . Last july, some private need a new ambassador to the us . Lastjuly, some private letters and e mails from kim darroch, now lord kim darroch, leaked some documents. There is an investigation is still going on by the metropolitan police, as to who leaked them. Those documents were pretty blunt about the state of the white house and the wait was being run by donald trump. That led to kim darroch resigning because he knew it would just get in the way and damage uk relations. It has taken six months for the British Government to find a replacement. Why have they chosen dane karen pearce . Because she is the best person for thejob. She has been at the Foreign Office since 1981 and has served everywhere. She is currently the ambassador to the united nations. She knows the United States well, the United States know her well. She got to know the Prime Minister when he was foreign secretary. She reportedly gets on well with donald trump. She is that extraordinary mixture of blunt, no nonsense, lancastrian Grammar School girl, who tells it how it is, but with amazing diplomatic guile and sophistication. She is going to need it is a she, in this period of our relationship . Yes, relations are pull at the moment, we disagree with trump over iran, huawei, diplomatic situation, the harry dunn case, we have a difficult trade deal to try and negotiate with the americans after brexit. So her task is large. James, thank you very much. The programme he has hosted for almost two decades started very differently today, with Phillip Schofields words read by his co host and friend, holly willoughby. With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, i have been coming to terms with the fact that i am gay. This is something that has caused many heartbreaking conversations at home. I have been married to steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown up daughters, molly and ruby. This will probably all come as something of a surprise, and i understand. But only by facing this and being honest can i hope to find peace in my mind and a way forward. Please be kind, especially to my family. Phillip. So. Wow. I think we just should take a breath of that point. I mean, reading that i can hear your voice, i can hear the pain and i can hear how difficult that is for you. Phillip schofield has been a familiar face to viewers since his beginnings on childrens bbc in the 80s alongside gordon the gopher. He starred on the west end stage asjoseph, and more recently, as well as this morning, co hosts the itv programme dancing on ice. There was an outpouring of support for him across social media. The lgbt equality Charity Stonewall said it was an incredibly brave and moving announcement. David walliams said he had nothing but respect and admiration for him. I think that when celebrities, or those with high profiles in the media, decide to come out, it shines a spotlight and raises attention to the issue that there are still many people out there who are unable to come out. I feel a little lighter, but im also very, very aware of, you know, theres no question that it causes pain as it causes upset. Phillip schofields relief at coming out was clear. The sentiment widely shared online that he might help others do the same. Sarah campbell, bbc news. Earlier i spoke to robert green from lgbt online newspaper pinknews. He is somebody who we have known for the best part of 40 years. He has been on our screens and is a very public figure and he has been closeted for 40 years. We had known he was a gay man. Naturally, u nfortu nately he was a gay man. Naturally, unfortunately in the society when somebody does come out, it is big news. We are still in an age where there is inequality between gender, trans people, straight and lgbt plus people. So when somebody does reveal the sexuality and gender identity, it is big moves. The reaction has been positive, lots of support for him, but the words brave and courageous keeping use, are they the right words . It is debatable whether they are the right words. The fact of the matter is, he was holding a secret, for want of a better word, for a huge period of time. I cannot imagine what it would have been like to be someone who is so famous, who has a Public Relationship and has children to come out. The pressure it would have put on him in terms of his career, relationship with his family and friends, you know, in a way it is brave. He was putting a lot of things at risk. Fortunately, he has had a huge wave of support. He spoke about his wife and his daughters and how supportive they and his wider family on both sides have been, so he feels safely held in that respect. How difficult is it forfamilies to in that respect. How difficult is it for families to have to process this sort of information about somebody who is right at the centre of their family . It is a difficult thing. From personal experience, i found family . It is a difficult thing. From personal experience, ifound it difficult to come out but fortu nately difficult to come out but fortunately i had a very supportive family. That is not the case for a lot of lg bt family. That is not the case for a lot of lgbt people. In the uk, people face discrimination and people face discrimination and people in the workplace and at home. For his family, it is a difficult thing to process. Really, it would be amazing if we lived in a world where people didnt have to come out and thisjust where people didnt have to come out and this just wasnt a thing. He is famous because of his talent and i hope what we take away from this, Philip Schofield, yet he is a gay man, i hope by next week we are not referring to him as the gay presenter, we are referring to him as this national treasure. What will change for him now . Hopefully he will now be able to be free, be happier. It is a huge burden in his personal life and he will feel liberated. I hope it doesnt impede on his career or have any negative impact. I dont think it should. We live in an age where people should be able to be themselves, their sexuality, their gender identity is irrelevant. It has absolutely no impact on their performance. I hope it will only bring positive things to his life. Robert green, from pink new. In a moment alice is going to bring us the latest business news. First first a look at the headlines on afternoon live. A gp who committed dozens of sex offences against former patients at his surgery has been given three life sentences with a minimum term of 15 years. A British National on board a quarantined ship injapan has tested positive for coronavirus. So far 61 passengers have taken ill. One of britains biggest tv presenters Phillip Schofield comes out as gay. Now with all the business new heres alice baxer in birmingham. Very alice baxer in birmingham. Warm welcome to you middle very warm welcome to you to the very middle of Birmingham City centre. Here we are in no high visible jackets because we are on a construction site on what is going to bea construction site on what is going to be a 30 story high office block. It is going to be the biggest, the tallest outside of london and we are here to Mark National apprenticeship week. It is the 13th week of its kind and the theme of this years celebration of apprenticeships is look beyond, try to encourage young people, teachers, parents and employers to look beyond preconceptions about the sorts of industries and Job Opportunities and salaries open to people who choose to go down the apprenticeship group. The Construction Industry is one that we have often associated with apprenticeships, but there are many, many more. Joining me now its a man from white hat de were an apprentice at google and katie. Jim ella, white hat is an apprenticeship that supplies apprenticeships to places you would not think of, you started at google and how did you get onto the scheme . Doing an apprenticeship for the past 15 months, this is the first time i have one high viz jacket. Congratulations. Thank you. I have always been a creative person soi i have always been a creative person so i had the creative mindset so i wa nted so i had the creative mindset so i wanted to go into an industry where i was using those skills in marketing. My found white hat through my mum. They sent me for my interview with google and i did my apprenticeship for the past couple of months. One aspect of yourjob now is to go around the country talking to young people, talking to the media advocating for apprentices . Yes, i do a lot of School Engagement and i speak to young students, careers advisers just to change their perceptions around apprenticeships and create a more positive conversation about it. I know there is something, katie, you feel passionate about. You are a huge fan of apprenticeships and prior to what you do now, you were in the Construction Industry as well . They offer so much opportunity. We found in my previous role in construction and now at Grant Thornton, we can access so many different types of apprenticeships that you wouldnt have naturally thought about. The Construction Industry was known for trader friendships, but you dont think ofan trader friendships, but you dont think of an apprenticeship in accountancy. We have over a hundred now at Grant Thornton. It offers an opportunity for people to develop skills, particularly those who might have the means of access to academic qualifications. I know Grant Thornton conducted a survey recently, where you found apprenticeships were wonderful for things like social mobility and encouraging diversity in the workplace, but do you think there needs to be a better conversation around the role of parents and teachers in changing their preconceptions about the sorts of people that go on to Apprenticeship Schemes and where they can leave . Absolutely, there are a lot of influences for young people and anyone who wants to make a change in their career. Apprenticeships are a fantastic thing. In schools, there isa fantastic thing. In schools, there is a lot more to do around the careers advice and understanding what the benefits of an apprenticeship can be and they are ona apprenticeship can be and they are on a parity with academic qualifications. There is lots more we can do. From employers with the work we have done and engaging with them and the survey be published, it still half of employers who believe apprenticeships are for young people and new entrants. That is not true, there is so much more out there for people who are transitioning or trying to up skill your current employees and that is where Grant Thornton are helping them access that make the best use of it. From the apprentices that you talk to around the country, is it a diverse bunch of people . Definitely, the apprentices i worked with at google, it is diverse backgrounds and as well as the apprentices i have met at white hat, so many different people from different backgrounds. Wonderful, thank you for your time. We are here all day talking about National Apprenticeship week. Now back to the studio. Or where the winners might come if they need to take a moment. But how do they prepare . They mustve written speeches. Rehearsing your oscar acceptance speech with or without tears is what normal people do when theyre bored, right . Oscar opens a lot of doors. Our science correspondent helen briggs reports. The worlds getting hotter. Its not just humans feeling the effects. Out. What we have shown with this research is that the increasing heat waves and droughts we are seeing with Climate Change are causing very large declines in populations of bumblebees. This is important partly because bumblebees are pollinators of wild flowers, and so we expect these declines of bumblebees to have a very important effects on the wider ecosystems of which theyre a part. But loss of habitat to farmland is also a threat to the bee. Scientists say their research can be used to predict where these might go extinct in the hope we can do something about it, such as growing wildflowers at the edge of fields. We have already lost two species of bumblebee in the uk and this new report once more could follow. Helen briggs, bbc news. Now its time for a look at the weather with tomasz schaferknacker. While the storm is expected to hit on sunday and affect many parts of the country, be prepared that disruption may last into monday as well. Hello, this is afternoon live. Our correspondent Helena Wilkinson sent this update from the old bailey. Three life sentences for 90 Sexual Assaults on his female patients. He has to serve a minimum of 15 years and at that point the parole board will assess him and it will be up to them to decide when exactly he is released, but this is manish shah who betrayed himself as a caring doctor at his surgery in South East London but behind the scenes what he was actually doing was exploiting his female patients and it was for his female patients and it was for his own sexual gratification. We heard he carried out intimate examinations, ones that did not have to be carried out, on his female patients. We also heard that he made women believe he had special expertise. He also meant to do some of them about high profile celebrities who had been diagnosed with cancer in order to to put fear into their minds. Many were young and vulnerable. Today, thejudge, on sentencing, said he used a mixture of flattery and fear and abused his position of trust. The judge went on to say that his behaviour was not only sexual but was driven by his desire to control and, on occasion, humiliate women. We spoke to the detective superintendent outside court after that sentencing. The judge summed it up best when she said he was a master of deception. He used his position as a Family Doctor to access vulnerable woman to carry out unnecessary medical procedures, breaching their trust, for his own sexual gratification. What have you victim said of his impact . It has had a huge impact on his victims, many who are young and vulnerable. Thejudge his victims, many who are young and vulnerable. The judge today said he picked those victims because they we re picked those victims because they were vulnerable. We heard from his youngest victim today who told the court that after she was sexually assaulted by him she, once you go to the doctor knows she shakes and is fea rful the doctor knows she shakes and is fearful and can no longer have a meal gp. After manish shah was convicted in december of last year, his second trial, we spoke to another of his victims whose identity is protected for legal reasons. He used our weaknesses, our fears, and took complete advantage. Not one time that i actually think he was doing anything untoward. The prosecution said it was a very similar scene for all of manish shahs victims, some now on medication for anxiety. There was one victim who had become pregnant as she was so fearful of going to hergp as she was so fearful of going to her gp that from time to time she did not visit or she was meant to. Clearly is huge and long Lasting Impact after the Sexual Assaults by manish shah. The judge impact after the Sexual Assaults by manish shah. Thejudge gets said today that we may not know the full scale of manish shah ever. This man is one of the passengers, one of thousands ordered to their cabins a week ago. Daily temperature checks take place in every household and new makeshift hospitals to house new patients. Shanghai is normally home to 24 Million People but most of them are nowhere to be seen. The World Health Organisation has warned there is a shortage in protective equipment such as masks and gloves. Six hundred and thirty people have now died and thirty one thousands have been infected across china, with cases now reported in 25 countries. The head of the organisation said this has caused a huge shortage in the kind of equipment used by healthcare workers. The World Health Organization is sending testing kits, masks, gloves, respirators and. In every region. However, the world is facing severe disruption in the market for personal protective equipment. We demand is 200 times higher than normal and prices are up to 20 times higher. This situation has been exacerbated by widespread. Ppe out of patient care. There are no depleted stockpiles and backlogs for four to six months. Global stocks of facemasks and respirators to meet the needs of World Health Organization has been depleted. The World Health Organization thinks that global front line Health Responders will be required approximately seven to ten persons of market capacity. This percentage may be higher for other critical supplies. Seven to 10 . People in china require the bulk of the equipment. This afternoon, i spoke to the pandemic supply network, which includes manufacturers and distributors and majestic providers, to suit to securing that protective material gets to those who need them. Our health editor, hugh pym joins me now. There is supposed to be another fight coming back to the uk at the weekend. About hundred and 50 citizens still in china, the source of this corona outbreak, will be formed by any chartered plane and they will arrive in the uk on sunday. I understand they will be taken to an nhs facility in Milton Keynes, quite possibly a training facility. Previous groups of passengers coming back from china, two groups were taken to other part, hospital in the world and we have seen quite emotive video from them on facetime about their experiences there. They are comfortable and well cared for but they are in quarantine for 14 days. The next group will go to this facility in Milton Keynes. What information has emerged about the person who has the third case of coronavirus in the uk, contracted not in china but in singapore . He is not in china but in singapore . He is no been treated in hospital in london, he was taken there yesterday. The sequence of events leading to it with this, he was any conference in singapore and was travelling back to brighton. He was contacted travelling back to brighton. He was co nta cted by travelling back to brighton. He was contacted by the singapore authorities and said there was a positive diagnosis at the conference. He then realised he felt u nwell conference. He then realised he felt unwell and called the nhs. He went by arrangement to an isolated nhs facility to be tested, he went home, kept himself in isolation, the test proved positive and then he was transported by the nhs up to london. What is very important is that it holds nhs 111 what is very important is that it holds nhs111 as sources are making clear that he did the right thing. Reports say that he went into ene, but that has been denied. It has been hailed as a example of. The right procedure was carried out, ring nhs111 and isolate yourself. The Scout Association has been heavily criticised by a coroner, following the death of a 16 year old who fell from a cliff in north wales. Ben leonard, from stockport in greater manchester, died after falling from the great orme in conwy, in august 2018. Earlier, i spoke to our wales correspondent Hywel Griffith who has been following the story. They have been camping the night before and were due to walk up snowdon but because of the word of the plan was changed. Ben and two of his friends to a slightly separate pass to some of the other scouts, leaders did see them go up there but once they had got the top of the hill they were on their own i decided on their own route back down. We had during the inquest that none of the scout leaders knew they we re none of the scout leaders knew they were with and thought they were someone else id even when we did realise that no one was with the boys there was no immediate action. Tragically, then slipped and fell 200 feet off a cliff. His friend saw him fall and at the bottom of the road. He lost his life in that way because inquest is focused on the feelings of the scout and the lack of supervision but went into that day. The Scout Association. The coroner has been scathing and issued a report to stop other deaths and called on the scout was easy scared association to respond to him in the next 56 days. He pointed out there was no Risk Assessment that day oran there was no Risk Assessment that day or an understanding of what that assessment would entail. There was no supervision or instruction to the boys and he is angry by the evidence given by the Scout Association because the debt review at the inquest that the leaders had been put on restrictive duty sense. They had to dismiss the jury and the onus has to be put on the Scout Association to make sure that no deaths happen. The coroner said at the lives of young people have been put at risk and they have to recognise the inadequacies of their processes. Recognise the inadequacies of their processes. This played a part in the death of ben. The Scout Association have issued a response after that damning report from the corner. They said they are happy about the tragic event of bad buzz by death and the extended sympathies to his family. We take the matter very seriously and stay that the safety of young people are the number one priority. Following the number one priority. Following the tragic event, they have strengthened their policies and procedures to make sure that young people can enjoy the activities safely. As the case is not completed, it would be inappropriate for them to comment further. The coroner listed a report listing 20 concerns about how the Scout Association had failed to recognise that it was not making enough provision to keep young people safe. Youre watching afternoon live, these are our headlines. The west ham womens captain Gilly Flaherty has admitted that she tried to take her own life as she came to terms with her sexuality. She wants to speak out about her troubles with Mental Health in the hope it will help others. A serious case review is set to look at new information in the the case of a teenager with autism who threw a six year old boy from the tenth floor of tate modern in london. Jonty bravery is awaiting sentencing for attempted murder. The bbc has obtained a recording ofjonty bravery telling a care worker he wanted to push someone off a Tall Building, a year before the attack. Our special correspondent lucy manning says the recording will raise serious concerns about the quality of the care system. Jonty bravery was in the care of hammersmith and fulham council. The care company that was looking after him, spencer and arlington, they are a regulated care company. Sir stephen bubb who led the review. How is the boy who was so badly injured . Well, i think everyone has been worried about the boys condition since that incident. It was very serious. He had a bleed on the brain and multiple fractures. His family have a fundraising website that raises money for his rehabilitation and they post updates on that, so initially in september they were saying that he could not move his body, he could not speak, but he was able to smile. Then he does seem to be making some progress. They say he is able to say a few words, to speak a little, they are starting to understand him, and although the latest update was a couple of weeks ago, he still cannot stand or walk. They say he is able to eat a little mash and theyre hoping he can drink through a straw soon. Overall, its slow and painful progress. Our correspondent dan johnson is at the old bailey and explained whats been hapenning in court. Three particular areas of evidence have been outlined for the jury here today, starting with details of the 22 people who lost their lives in that bombing. The youngest was just eight years old. The jury heard the names, the backgrounds, the identities of those 22 victims, where they had come from, what they were doing there that night. Some had been attending the concert, some were there to pick up their children at the end of it, because it was right at the end of that concert, when people were leaving, that the bomb was detonated. Those details were quite upsetting, especially for families of victims who are in court here and some of the survivors, either here at the old bailey or watching the feed of proceedings back in manchester. That was an upsetting moment, quite a poignant list that the prosecution went through. Then the jury saw images of Salman Abedis last 24 hours before he detonated that bomb. He was going around manchester, gathering the final components he needed to put the bomb together and carrying out something of a reconnaissance mission. Three times he went back to an area between Manchester Victoria station and the outside of the arena, essentially checking out how he would get there and scoping out what the area was like. Thejury also heard details of the way he actually put the bomb together, that he used a painted tin filled with explosives packed inside a bigger canister, which was also packed with nuts to act as shrapnel. That was all concealed in a rucksack with the wire and a battery and a switch to detonated with. They saw images of his final journey, across manchester, from the flat he rented to outside the arena. Salman abedi actually sat waiting there for an hour, presumably waiting for it to get busier as people started leaving the concert, and the jury saw the final image recorded at 10 31pm, 15 seconds before he detonated that bomb, killing 22 people and injuring hundreds more. The jury then heard the details of the evidence against hashem abedi, the younger brother of salman abedi. There was detailed forensic evidence, fingerprints, dna evidence, phone and Internet Data that linked hashem abedi to the plans and preparations that salman abedi had been making. He is linked to the properties and vehicles and to some of the components used in putting that bomb together. Today we head for the first time some of the defence that hashem abedi is going to mount in this trial. He told police in a statement that he had no idea what his brother was planning that he was shocked that his brother had done this. He said he felt very sorry for everyone involved and could never envisage that his brother had it in him to do that to innocent people. He said that if he had any idea he would have reported it to his parents and denied having any extremist views and no sympathy with isis. He said he knew nothing about the purchase, storage or preparation of home made explosives and said that he believed the screws and nuts and nails they had bought together were to do up the garden shed. The prosecution barrister told the jury, you will doubtless wish to consider the credibility of those claims against the overall body of evidence which you now know confronts this defendant. Hashem abedi denies 22 counts of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to cause explosions with salman abedi. Energy bills are to fall for millions of uk households this april after the regulator lowered price caps. A man has been placed underjudicial investigation in paris for stealing a mural by the Street Artist banksy. The mural, depicting a masked rat wielding a box cutter, was taken in the middle of one night last september. Two men used a metal cutter to remove it from the back of a car park entry sign just outside the Pompidou Centre where it had been put up a year earlier. Police arrested three men in connection with the theft earlier this week, and have now released two of them. The mural itself has not been recovered. Now its time for a look at the weather with thomas schafernaker. Well, i am sure you have heard by now, a rough weekend on the way. At least, on the weather front, but storm ciara is still some 48 hours away from the mainland of the uk but the weather is already beginning to go downhill. In fact, through the course of tonight and into tomorrow, the winds and start freshening up, you will see spells of rain showers moving off the atlantic, but on the whole saturday is actually looking pretty decent across most of the uk, plenty of sunny spells around. But this belt of wind and rain, that is not the storm just yet, that is in advance of storm ciara. It is a spell of very heavy rain and very windy weather. That will affect Northern Ireland and parts of scotland. As we head through saturday night and sunday, sunday night, that is when we will see the storm blew through and that is what will cause problems across the uk. Weve been talking about ireland and wales in the six nations, but theres another huge match and a very confident captain . Yes, scotland host england at murrayfield in the calcutta cup. Both sides lost their matches last weekend, england lost to france and scotland lost to ireland, partly because of a dreadful mistake by stuart hogg on his debut as captain. He dropped the ball as he was about to touch down for a try. It meant that ireland won 19 12. Had he touched down and they had converted it they would have drawn level. Despite that mistake, he has spoken very positivly about the england match tomorrow and feels scotland can do it. There is the calcutta cup to play for. That is what we are concentrating on. She says that this was one of the reasons she wanted to speak out, because sometimes its the people who seem very strong on the outside who need to talk about problems. She hoped speaking out would help others. I will never go down that road again and i am a lot stronger. There has been reaction from the Lgbt Community as well, it shows youre never too old or too young, no rule book for coming out and eve ryo ne no rule book for coming out and everyone does it in their own town. In his lengthy statement, Philip Schofield repeatedly mentioned his wife of 26 years and his two daughters and the hurt this will be causing them. This is a very private issue, but because of his profile, has been played very publicly and people in that community hoping the fa ct people in that community hoping the fact that he has been able to do this, might encourage others who are struggling with their own sexuality, to have the confidence to do the same. Sarah, thank you. A couple of pieces of breaking news. 102 migrants have crossed the English Channel in six boats, beating yesterdays figure of 90. According to brandon lewis, the security minister, the government is tackling illegal migrant crossings on all fronts alongside our french and belgian partners. We have patrols on beaches, drones, Protection Equipment to stop small boats leaving european shows and we are enhancing security measures and increasing intelligence sharing in belgium and france. And it is working, he says. The majority of migrants who attempt the journey are stopped, only 25 have made it to the uk this year, compared with 48 last year. As we know, thatjourney from the mainland europe can be very perilous, particularly at this time of year with the water so cold. He was set to be promoted to admiral later this month at Buckingham Palace has requested the ministry of defence to further move until he returns to public duties. First a look at the headlines on afternoon live the government is sending another plane to bring home british citizens in wuhan the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak. A gp who committed dozens of sex offences against former patients at his surgery has been given three life sentences with a minimum term of 15 years. One of britains biggest tv presenters Phillip Schofield comes out as gay. Business news with a bit of a difference. Alex baxter is in birmingham. We are here to Mark National apprenticeship week, an opportunity to celebrate diversity and opportunities available to young people if they choose to go down that route. The theme is to look beyond and try to encourage parents, teachers, Young Players and employers, look beyond any preconceptions they may have about careers and salaries open to people who choose to go down that path. Two people passionate about apprenticeshipsjoin me people passionate about apprenticeships join me now. People passionate about apprenticeshipsjoin me now. They feel eads, employment and skills coordinator at Bam Construction, who is building the site. And katie, accountancy at grant norton. We have had figures from the government suggesting over the past 12 months apprenticeships have gone down, especially in the Construction Industry, but that is not your experience here at bam, you still had ten applicants for every place on yourskin . Had ten applicants for every place on your skin . Absolutely, i think we are having a renaissance as an industry. I think the digital side of the industry is becoming attractive. We are building information models on the building site and delivering that at level four with our new intake, who you interviewed earlier. Yours is a very attractive scheme, decent salary and the opportunity of a degree at the end of it. How do you go about sifting through such high levels of competition . We have a very good Instagram Account. Our Instagram Account and social Media Presence means we can get their messages out to the younger people through social media and hopefully you can see examples of the trainees that we have on sites and the fact we now do the level four means you can eventually go to University Without having the debt. Very attractive to young people. We are noticing a higher level of entry and students coming to us with a grades and a star grades whereas in the past construction was never seen as technically knowledgeable as it could be. So the industry is turning a corner. So a diverse range of people coming to an no student debt at the end of it. Katie, you have a similar experience in terms of the levels at Grant Thornton. But that is not the picture across the board, you have worked in a different variety of sectors and it is those smaller companies, that tend to hire apprentices, nine out of ten apprentices, nine out of ten apprentices are trained with those smaller companies. They often struggle to keep those Apprenticeship Schemes on track and achieving what they wanted . Apprenticeship Schemes on track and achieving what they wanted . I can be challenging for Small Businesses but the apprenticeship is the route to get new talent in. I think that is where large employers like Bam Construction and Grant Thornton can really help smaller organisations to understand how apprenticeships can add real value. I know understand how apprenticeships can add realvalue. I know you understand how apprenticeships can add real value. I know you are passionate about apprenticeships and the value they can bring, ijust wa nted the value they can bring, ijust wanted to put it to you, there has been some criticism in the press recently about fake apprenticeships at larger organisations that are not using them to bring in younger people, but upscaled existing staff, what would you say to that . People, but upscaled existing staff, what would you say to that7m people, but upscaled existing staff, what would you say to that . It is disappointing because it gives apprenticeships a bad name. What employers are doing, they are looking at apprenticeships as a way to develop real talent. As i have said on many forums, there is a need to use apprenticeships, because the type of things they provide, actually they are a good qualification whilst working. It helps people to get the qualification they wouldnt ordinarily do. Employers are embracing that to help social mobility and to climb the ladder. All the apprentices we have been talking to today at the bam site are most enthusiastic about what they are doing. Right now, back to you in the studio. Alice, thank you very much. Or where the winners might come if they need to take a moment. But how do they prepare . They mustve written speeches. Rehearsing your oscar acceptance speech with or without tears is what normal people do when theyre bored, right . Oscar opens a lot of doors. Sophie long, bbc news, hollywood. Now its time for a look at the weather with thomas schafernaker. Im sure youve heard by now weve got Stormy Weather on the horizon, but in the short term, actually the weather is looking absolutely fine. Nothing dramatic happening over the next few hours. The storm system is still way on the other side of the atlantic. Here, you can see bringing snow to parts of america and also this powerfuljet stream propelling it across the atlantic and i think by the time we get to sunday morning, we start to see storm ciara by the time we get to sunday morning, well start to see storm ciara moving across ireland and into the uk and affecting all parts of the country. We are expecting the worst of it to arrive from early sunday onwards, first across western parts of the uk and then progressively other parts of the uk, further east and south will be getting those very strong gusts of wind. We will get to that injust a second. This is whats happening in the short term. The weather is already starting to go downhill through the course of tonight across some western parts and northern parts of the uk, but this is well in advance of the actual storm which, at this stage is still way off the screen, well out across the atlantic. A reasonably chilly night on the way, around three degrees in some areas. Through the course of saturday, in advance of storm ciara, we have this additional weather front, this additional belt of very heavy rain and also very strong winds affecting particularly these western and North Western areas. So saturday night it will be very blustery. Then it may happen that very early on sunday things will die down briefly before sunday afternoon, things really ramp up across the uk. So very heavy rain, some snow across the mountains of scotland and those ferociously strong gusts of wind, pretty much affecting all parts of the uk. So, how windy is it going to get . The current thinking is, those gusts of wind will probably hit around 60 miles an hour widely in gusts across the uk. But up to around 80 miles an hour around the coasts and the hills and thats likely to cause some structural damage. So within this yellow area from the met office, we are expecting winds widely gusting to around 60 miles an hour. And at the moment, an amber warning in force for the extreme south east around 80 miles an hour. But the amber warning may change, it may be extended, it may not so keep track of the forecast and the unsettled weather 02 58 32,692 4294966103 13 29,430 lasts into next week
