Polling began so I think that is a big part of the calculation but of course I think Mr Johnson and those around him also understand that something inherently immensely risky about going to a country of 46000000 eligible voters at a time of tremendous division and polarized nation dramatic testimony has emerged from survivors of a gun attack in Mexico on Monday which killed 3 mothers and 6 children from the us Mormon family 113 year old boy told relatives he had hidden with siblings in Bush's before the escaped and walked for 20 kilometers to seek help local media initially said the attackers thought to be from a drug cartel had mistakenly targeted the family but our Mexican correspondent Will Grant says some people have questioned that this is a horrific attack even by Mexican drug war standards yet there is also an element in which this particular Mormon settlement was very outspoken against the drug cartels and there's a theory being posited by checking on the u.s. Side that they may have actually been targeted for speaking out world news from the b.b.c. If the European Egypt on Sudan were trying to make progress in talks today on a controversial mega dumb along the river Nile the u.s. Treasury is hosting the discussions in Washington if he appears about halfway through building the dam and insists no one can stop the project but Egypt is worried about the impact on its water supplies and how much water would be used by Sudan the $4000000000.00 down would be Africa's largest hydroelectric power station . News. Hello this is o.o.s. With me we come to you live from the b.b.c. News room to bring you the news as soon as it comes in to us here in a few minutes from now we'll speak to China expert here in the building to talk about a shocking video that has captured the stabbing of a probe aging lawmaker in Hong Kong also another story that has just come in about a government announcement in China that you might have just heard in the news bulletin as well that game was under 18 years of age will be banned from playing online between 10 pm and 8 am We'll explain both those stories in more detail in just a few minutes but let's start with what has happened in Jordan for locals and for Douras wounded at an ancient Roman site out above as editor Sebastian Usher has just walked in there are 2 desks and sat next to me what do we know about what has happened where this happened about midday local time in Jordan Jerusha is one of the top sites in Jordan I mean you know Petra. And it's a huge huge Roman site in very very good condition I was there just just 2 weeks ago and it is packed with tourists a year or 2 ago it wouldn't have been but now they come flooding back so there is a huge she walks through and then the main site is about health a kilometer down and there's a cafeteria on the left hand side Now eyewitnesses say that someone dressed all in black can bearded I had heard from and I wouldn't a region of it he was mosque with that's not entirely clear now jumped over a fence as a car parked nearby jumped over the fence and rushed to where the tourists were as I say outside this cafeteria it's a long long walk in the heat going rancheros can take 2 or 3 hours to walk around to people stopping. On their way out there and attacked with a knife the tourists 4 of them we know were wounded Originally there was speculation that they were Spanish since then it's become clear that 3 were Mexican and one was Swiss in the melee a group of locals now it's also just near where the guides wait for people to come and a group of the guides chased with the help of some of the tourists the assailant and they managed to catch him I'm told by an eyewitness but when that happened one of those involved in the Chase also got stabbed got stabbed quite badly and presume is one of those who's now in hospital one of the people who are injured so the man who is a suspect has been arrested nothing has been released either about a motive or a name so far but we do again authorities and this obviously must have led to panic in the area has security been a concern to us attractions in Jordan I was somewhat surprised by the absence of a heavy security presence. Or Petron Jerusha when you walk in the main entrance there is one of those. Contraptions you have to walk through which can see where you have metal and you're not but when I was there I don't think it was actually being watched over you could walk around it so that wouldn't be very difficult but it seems anyway that this guy came from another way Jerusha the site itself is surrounded by the town of giraffes who are always it seems you can get in Petra again no heavy security presence I mean the fact is that Jordan hasn't suffered many serious security incidents back in 2016 there was a flurry when ISIS was was at its height and Jordan has to be concerned both the neighborhood it's in Syria Lebanon Iraq it borders all of those countries have been concerns. It has a strong is Islamist and and jihadist. Movement within it but it's kept controlled by by a variety of means partly by the monarchy self and by the respect for the monarchy . So back in 2016 there was an instant another lesser tourist destination a major incident where I think about 30 people were wounded in that was Isis claimed that but since then very little and as a semi last 2 years people have been coming back Petra was packed when I was there was packed all of those places so this will be a big blow obviously for Jordan which doesn't really have a great deal of other assets economically it's a. Dreadful financial straits depends a lot on its tourism sébastien Atia thank you. Now let's turn to the u.s. And talk about the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump one of the key people to testify so far has added to his original testimony now before we explain the latest developments let's recap the story the complex story really so far has group apart from the. Mr Trump is accused of breaking the law by pressurising Ukraine's leader bludgeon is a Lenski to dig up damaging information on a political rival It's all linked to a phone call that took place in July 2019 between the 2 leaders So tell me more about that for you on the face of it the purpose of the call was to congratulate Mr the LEDs a former t.v. Personality on his recent election victory but the following month and anonymous whistleblower reported to be a CIA official told a formal complaint expressing urgent concern a bit that I rough transcript of that call was later released it showed that Mr charm had urged President the Lenski. To investigate former u.s. Vice President Joe Biden the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in next year's election as well as Mr Biden son Hunter Biden it's important to note that the call occurred days after Mr Trump lost 3 $191000000.00 in military aid to Ukraine critics argue this was used as a bargaining chip to pressure the new government in here but Mr Trump denies this what's happening now the Democrats have launched a formal impeachment inquiry a number of officials have been called to testify including. He was until recently the u.s. Government special envoy to Ukraine. He's acting ambassador to Ukraine. A Seattle hotel and Trump Jonah he was appointed as u.s. Ambassador to the e.u. In June last year any other people we need to know yes Rudy Giuliani the former mayor of New York and most relevantly to this story president Trump's personal lawyer Adam Schiff the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee he was leading the Ukraine investigation and Marie Evanovich She's the former u.s. Ambassador to Ukraine she took up the role was president the lens he's pre-disaster was in office and became a vocal critic of Ukrainian officials calling on them to fight corruption in May 2019 memory of an image was suddenly recalled from her post. We were being brought up to speed on bad by Krupa and Insaaf now the B.B.C.'s senior North America reporter Anthony Zucker joins us from Washington d.c. And Anthony you were listening in to that tape and there was a quite a few names that we heard but one of those names Gordon Sunderland is in news the easy United States ambassador to the European Union who's filed a 3 page addition to his original testimony to Congress impeachment investigators So what has that to be. Yeah and that's essentially this week has been a lot of depositions from people who had already testified before Congress being released one of those yesterday was the testimony of Gordon saw on land and as that testimony was released he sat down the end of last month to talk to investigators they added that 3 page den demand in that 3 page denim saw him lead and said that other testimony that had been provided to help jar his memory and now he recalls telling Ukrainians on September 1st that u.s. Military aid to Ukraine wouldn't be restored or was likely contingent on the Ukraine publicly opening investigations into energy company that had ties to the Bidens Joe Biden son and Joe Biden of course the Democratic candidate for president and that revelation could be used to damage Joe Biden so there's been a lot of talk about quid pro quo military aid and a presidential visit in exchange for opening these investigations and here we have sawmill and a u.s. Ambassador directly saying that he told the Ukrainians this although Republicans and Donald Trump's defenders will say Well that was just his opinion and he wasn't instructed by the president to do this it still is a pretty remarkable development that puts more in line with some of the other testimony we've heard from foreign policy hands who appeared before these congressional investigators but the impeachment process is slow and elaborate and they do have elections within a day from now so when I'll be at the moment. Well we're going to possibly see a few more closed door testimony this week although there being quite a few no shows of Trump administration officials who are not paying attention to subpoenas so that will continue maybe this week and into a little bit of next week but the big next Bader phase will be public testimony and then we'll see some of the people who have already testified in private some of those names we heard in that segment just before me coming back to talk to Congress and testify in public in televised hearings after that the Intelligence Committee will file a report that's handed off to another committee the Judiciary Committee and they'll decide whether to file articles of impeachment against the president which would subsequently be voted on by the entire House of Representatives if they do that then it gets handed over the Senate for a full trial on whether to remove the president so there's going to be a lot of action I think in the next month or 2 months indeed and there has been action on the election front as well as state elections which have not been very good news for President tell us more. You know there have been a few in particular in the states of Virginia and Kentucky there wore state level elections off year elections yesterday and in Virginia for the 1st time in since 1993 Democrats are going to control both the legislature and the governorship which they already control the Republicans lost seats in both the state Senate and the state legislature so that's an indication that Virginia which was once considered a Republican state recently considered a swing state that could go either way now is solidly Democratic at a lot of that has to do with the fact that suburbs suburban voters have been moving away from Donald Trump and supporting the Democrats the other race was a governor's race in Kentucky where the incumbent Republican governor Matt Bevin who is kind of a Trump like candidate ran as a businessman outsider was elected in 2015 and kind of campaigned governed toward his base in a sort of controversial fashion he lost to the Democratic attorney general in what has to be considered an upset Donald Trump campaigned for Bevan just on Monday night through a lot of support behind him and Kentucky was a solidly conservative state Donald Trump held that state won that state by 30 points in 2016 so even though there's a history of Kentucky electing Democratic governors in the past a lot of people thought that Bevan would be able to win reelection with Donald Trump support and that ended up not being the case so it could produce a trouble for Donald Trump running a similar kind of campaign nationally in 2020 Thanks Anthony always good to have you on the show. This is a once on the b.b.c. . We're live from the heart of the b.b.c. News room and here are 3 more stories my colleagues have been looking at it Dahlia media is reporting that a baby born with a recognition that means he must be kept away from diving sunlight. Has been abandoned at a hospital in children nurses have been caring for him since his birth in August but he may need to leave the hospital within weeks it is not clear why the parents cannot be contacted or why they have not returned to the child dagoes National Assembly has water to allow Togolese people living abroad in the upcoming election the changes to its electoral record come a few months before presidential elections are due to take place and British High Court judges have ruled that a police ban on extinction rebellion protests in London last month was unlawful the Metropolitan Police impose the ban which prevented 2 or more people from the group taking part in protests under the Public Order Act But judges have ruled that police had no power to do this because the law did not cover separate assemblies. Now are B.B.C.'s Latin America Online Editor Vanessa is here join me at the desk for an update on a story from Mexico that we spoke at length about yesterday this is about an attack by suspected Mexican drug cartel gunmen on a convoy of u.s. More months we now know more about how some of those family members escaped and it's pretty dramatic Vanessa about a 13 year old or young boy that's right his name is Devon Langford and he was one of the children in one of the 3 cars traveling from along a dirt road when they were ambushed by gunmen and Devon Langford to manage to escape alongside with his siblings and he managed to hide 6 of his siblings underneath branches along the side of the road and he then walked for 23 kilometers to the communities base this Mormon community space and the mortar he actually hid along the way he didn't want to fall victim to the gun. Men who were still roaming the countryside and it is this way that after 6 hours of walking he managed to raise the alert and remind our listeners if they hadn't joined us yesterday what this whole attack is all about what do we know. While we still don't know what it is about or the motive is still a mystery this is a group of Mormons who were traveling some of them to pick up relatives at an airport others which are going to a wedding and because in this area of the country there are no proper roads or the roads that are asphalted very scarse these 3 women with their children took to a dirt road and that's a dangerous move because there are drug gangs in these areas and so they traveled in a convoy for safety and then they were shot at that's what we know and the members of the family who were in one of the cancer need to Maria Miller with 4 of a children were shot at and then the car caught fire in that hail of bullets another woman Dawn along Langford She's the mother of the 13 year old we were just talking about was also shot in another car with 2 of her male children and the 3rd woman Christina Langford was also killed but her baby daughter survived family members think that Christina managed to put the baby in its little car seat onto the floor and that's how the baby was saved and has there been any reaction from Mexican authorities about what they have found out about this one person has been arrested so far although there's just news coming in that maybe 2 more have been arrested but we're still awaiting confirmation on that that has been outrage in the u.s. And both in Mexico that a group of women and children should have been targeted now the president of Mexico said that he thinks that they were caught in crossfire between 2 rival gangs and that this was a case of mistaken identity. Some members of the family think that they that these women and children were actually deliberately targeted and one family member Lebaron has been saying that Christina one of the women killed actually got out of the car to say this is women and children that you're shooting at so still a lot of confusion this family is also a very powerful and influential family locally and in the past they have been targeted for extortion they have been standing up against the violence and attempts of extortion in this one case where one of the family members was. Kidnapped or 10 years ago they decided not to pay ransom money and they managed to get the family member Freed thank you very much Vanessa. Latin America Online. Now while Vanessa was talking Carrie Allen a b.b.c. China Media analyst has also joined me at this desk where we sit in the middle of the newsroom. And Carrie of course we're going to talk to you about some china stories and for us this really her shocking video where a stabbing has been caught on camera someone comes and. Offers flowers but then stabs Hong Kong lawmaker tell us more yet this is been dominating not only Hong Kong media but mainland Chinese media all of today so there's footage of genius ho whose name probating lawmaker and he's somebody who strongly condemned the Hong Kong protests in fact only a week ago he was talking about how protestors violent protesters could come out of nowhere that was that was a line he'd used in an interview with c.c.t.v. And so yet last week he was saying that today there's this footage that circulated which shows him being meeting somebody with flowers and and then suddenly this person with the flowers pulls out a knife and suddenly there's a big struggle including him. He will jump on this man and and yet what we've seen since is that he's he's been to hospital he's given interviews with the press and he's put a statement out on social media saying that he's Ok but he talks a lot about the district elections which are coming up later this month in Hong Kong and says that. They saw most kind of you know it kind of for him it shows the violence in Hong Kong needs to go away and he s
