Friends and family members of mine in the u.k. Have been telling me about stories of of snow and ice so it feels feels a long way away absolutely absolutely Well thanks for joining us Phil of course with us for the next hour and Phil as usual brought along a couple of guests as well we're going to start Phil by talking about an aging population in Australia not unique problem. Internationally But how is it going to being tackled and what is the problem 1st of all in Australia. Well in the next 20 minutes or so we're going to look at how Australia's most populous state this is New South Wales how New South Wales celebrates old age how it is coping with an ageing population and how it deals with the increasing problem of elder abuse now in the next couple of weeks at the start of April New South Wales will begin its seniors festival it's the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and joining us tonight Callum is Tanya Davis tenure is the New South Wales Minister for aging women and mental health thanks very much for joining us today Tanya. Thank President they were here Carol as well Tanya nice to have you on. The full 10 year the the seniors festival is we say it's the biggest in in the southern hemisphere it celebrates older age should just give us a sense of of what it's all about and why it was started. Thanks Phil we've really exciting time in the calendar in New South Wales that is the biggest event the thing is in the southern hemisphere he said and we're expecting I am as close to have her 1000000 people will be expecting to take Pat you know that have been different events these could be phrased in their local communities or here we get an event put on biological council community groups and also a number of program and then festivals and concerts that this government is funding this is really just a big thank you to 2 older Australians for their contribution is it an attempt to make them still feel valued because there is an attitude in in certain countries in Australia in certain sections of the community that as people get older they can be a burden is this is a pushback against those sort of attitudes. Look it does go a long lie to a change in the eyes of Jacob as he said yes definitely the thing is festival is the way that that the need that the government my government wants to say a huge thank you to saying it's within our community for all that they have done particularly when they were working and raising a family that contributed a huge amount to the success that needs as well as is today but it's also an opportunity to and neighbors and to continue to engage and be active and be connected and get of the time make new friends try new things and really have a I guess an exciting and that does it in an activities of all to life and this is one way that we are really trying to facilitate that we can now communities right across the state news we say this seniors festival that starts in April here in New South Wales the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere a time you would you think countries say like Britain can learn from say the New South Wales attitudes to its seniors and its older people. So we we know is that in our community and many communities globally that populations are aging and that proof provides not on the challenges for governments to say that also up the chain it is and from my view I want to say it's looking at the opportunities most size and then the challenges because I know in my area of working I employ a number of all the people in my offices because of their wealth of experience how much they understand of the community how functions their knowledge but there is sign much that all the people do have to contribute and to to feel valued and so it's important that as a government we lead in the space and the South whilst we are the Says takes to create an assemblage the aging strategies the whole of government approach to how do we tackle how do we embrace all the people within our community and it's again right across government as looking at housing accommodation was can retire in how do we take people connected in their communities how do we help people get around in a communities and certainly we know I've done that currently is it at 1.2000016.3 percent of us are aged $65.00 or 5 and that that's just 17 percent just in the last there's a need so this is a really she that's happening now and way just getting on and getting as active and as as creative in an adult we help and support they all the case in our community to live well and live long and have a lot of time you do something like the seniors festival. Well supported across the generations if you like to younger people come up as well and and offer their support to something like that. Well certainly directed towards the saying is community but for the various events that that are also says cruises to is old discussions dances cooking events continues that they would rely on you the younger population delivering those concepts and sharing their stories and facilitating those connections so it really is an intergenerational effect but as well as the saying is festival now we the government put on the premium gala crumbs that for free concerts are valuable to thousands of all the paypal and a lot of the talent which. Has come to the young talent emerging talent as well as all the more well 9 talents and seeing as such is why for example Frank Miller failed to understand had an amazing hit in the u.k. In the sixty's he's going to be feted at out singing thanks but so we try and link wonderful things that we recurrent in new modern emerging talent but also Lincoln back to the era that that I grew up in banks in the only way I'm interested as well and so many events for people there logistical problems not getting them along to the site you know in terms of mobility in terms of access and things for people who are perhaps a little bit more frugal. It was certainly a couple of the main highlights of the premie is got to consider the saying you Cecille x. But which is just next Joel in the same magnificent venue here in the middle of Sydney we have we was very closely with the Department of Transport here in the stuff files to to really plan and to coordinate all the logistics of helping our older communities a silly get to they venue but also the thing is festival has an event too right across the state so in regional communities in rural communities and it's just wonderful to say as a whole of government that we work together. And helping able getting on buses and the transportation to take it down to Sydney for these concepts is there a long lasting effect from the seniors festival which I understand kind of runs that sort of through the rule that you know there's this peak of activity all the sudden for elderly people what happens the rest of the year. Yeah well as I had to say that the same he said that only so I will know that as a local member of parliament throughout the year I get people turning up to my office wanting to put their name down months in advance to get a free ticket so I think that everyone that they know is about the same assessable and is wanting to be dissipated and not misstep and throughout the year there's a lot of work that we're still doing particularly around things programs such as a livable communities grants program and that works with overnight they should then councils to to run programs that help other people feel included in their community said for example some of the programs that have been saved funding. Classes for cooking for one a Bunnings healthy Hutton program we've got the song that discussed it saying is that runs and also supporting meals on wheels but beyond that we have programs that accord tech savvy saying if we we have one on one coaching with an external corporate Patna to help other people understand the benefits and how to use technology whether it's banking or they find the Facebook but we also produce and run as saying it's Cod So it's a cause that identifies the holder as thing I think is someone either the age of 60 and on looks. 5 and a half 1000 businesses that they can get discounts whether it discounts for time to kissing of items or cafe the food restaurants travel discounts insurance discounts that's another opportunity for that where we're building and growing this provision of services to help and support all the people live well later in life and there's lots more that we are going to die just in Palm and I launched the out of aging site aggressive exhibition so that began showing images telling the story of. People from all walks of life begin break down that ages attitude it was amazing papal health there are now communities of the people doing extraordinary things with amazing stories I wouldn't want to get those 30 that could take echoing that is I just added She's absolutely as well as a jism that what other problems are are becoming more apparent as the population across Australia indeed gets older. So look eventually little bit before about the the issue of elder abuse now I'm not sure whether that same top chap a lot in your community Ivan u.k. But. The World Health Organization this is a quick definition it describes Elda as he says a single repeated act or a less of a price reaction occurring within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust which lays to or injury to an all the per cent and we know that the abuse of all the Paypal it can it's often as psychological emotional abuse is is the l
