This is a poor night on 5 Live on Dawson and a boy and come up in this hour the program in a moment we'll hear the latest on the major affected hundreds of thousands of people across parts of the U.K. In fact there are still people trying to get home from their travels by train and otherwise and been travelling for some time Arkansas a more than a moment or 2 also Donald Trump says their support across Congress for tougher background checks for gun buyers 4 in the chief shootings in El Paso in Dayton which killed 31 people last weekend I remember the rumble in the jungle in the thriller in Manila now we've got the jewel in the desert and the Joshua's which should match we Vendi Ruiz is taking place in Saudi Arabia human rights groups on 2 happy is it just the money talking will get the week's news from East Africa India remember in an hour's time we'll open up the phone lines for the new season of the World Football phone in the woods looking for more in America north and south and of course some players from those regions playing in our leagues. First hundreds of thousands of people across parts of the U.K. Have been affected by a major power cut National Grid says the situation is now getting back to normal after the issues at an offshore wind and a gas fired power station were resolved there blackouts across the southeast southwest and northeast of England as well as the Midlands and Wales Let's speak to the B.B.C. Reports and the more and Dickie bring us any more news on this Good morning Don Well as you say the power is back up and running for those domestic customers who lost their electricity it went off at about 5 o'clock and most of those customers were restored by 6 o'clock a half past 6 but the insurer. Uring problem is with the transport network and there have been chaotic scenes last evening and continuing and there are still people stuck on trains or right now just looking at the update from Thameslink and Northern trains and they say they have a number of trains on the railway which are unable to move or require the attention of a specialist engineer and the message which was posted just 20 minutes ago says the rescue of these trains is ongoing and prevents a train service running along with many other of the train companies there saying those problems will continue until at least mid day later on today so the problem is certainly not over and many of those people have been on those trains for 1st something like 9 hours and you can just imagine the scenes I think you may be talking to somebody shortly but these are trains that. May have lost the air conditioning that you you can't open the windows they may be running out of food and drink and they're still waiting to know what's going to happen to them tonight so for those people those trains in a must be a real nightmare indeed and even they might be cold comfort to them Can you give any details about what exactly happened. Happened Yes I mean national the national grid in fact haven't given us very much information they they simply say that 2 generators they call them in other words sources of power went went offline in the same time they're not saying what they were but Industry experts are telling us that at $1658.00 a gas fired plant a little little Baffert in Cambridge share failed and then 2 minutes later Horn see offshore wind farm also disconnected now we don't know if those 2 events are related at all we just don't know the stage but the fact that 2 of them went down. And that in one fell swoop the lost about 5 percent of its power and that is what is created these these power cuts right across the country geographically different locations from the south right up to the north or the north east England Wales it seems Scotland not apparently affected but those widespread power carts certainly in the domestic network but the problem was sorted out pretty rapidly and most of those domestic customers were back on by 6 or 630 but it's the transport network which has been really hit hard and there are questions being asked about why the core transport network has been affected so badly and certainly what happens we understand the train companies is that when the power comes back on it's not simply a question of the train start off run again in many cases as a said they need a specialist engineer to go out and restart them. And meanwhile they're blocking the line so that is that explains to a certain extent the ongoing problems on the on the trains and that explains why there will still be traffic chaos later today Saturday doesn't because the trains are in all the wrong places that's right the trains are in all the wrong places the drivers are are out of hours so it's very much like you see at the airports when you when you have weather related problems will strike related problems there is inevitably a knock on effect and that's certainly what the rail companies are expecting there's been a big problem King's Cross in London the station was actually closed for quite a while because there were too many people on the concourse some Pancras similar problems and lots of people wondering how on earth they were going to get home if they could other people thinking what well perhaps they have to find a hotel somewhere in London so a lot of problems especially it seems to the north of London and those major terminals some Pancras and Kings Cross and he thank you B.B.C. Reporter there and the more let's read to Dana now who left Edinburgh for King's Cross at heart 12 presuming that 30 minutes off the day yeah yeah we have just touched I don't want to tell you 12 hours or even that one or it took you nearly 13 hours to nearly 13 hours to get one thing across from Agra on the road that people are trained are coming are pretty how long would the journey normally take as 4 hours 4 hours half 4 and a half hours or millennium so we thought of a 3 day how did you cope and how did everybody cope with the other half hours on board. Perished. 2 hours the silly were held in full for 8 hours the 1st 2 were referring or fairly normal sorry I were 7 you could imagine things were different to get free and people were threatening the cells of our trade and through just being held in middle of nowhere for longer and when our trying to convince the village people 1st one to try to get off the tree they will stay on credit card food run over by 5 hours ago so. Critically good environment to be and where were you when you had this thought of the delays there was a train. Hard field have so do you feel it to 2. Hours from. Me a person who feels. Yet even though we were all kind of felt like this and. Really we started because we held the high heels from the air we reversed box on the line word as the village needed to see village and then changed lights on top floor lights to take us into one of the things across all this Liam told R.T. 1st to go back and come back and some of the things broke for those who don't know have who would call be more than half an hour away from tonight and I was after something from the virus for the reason you read the other tree the SO A.P. Across the even a. Dark place that are looking to you know about the train and have transported there because where we really paces in the Father we were chopped and the tree on behind us and there was no option for the train station to be evacuated so we quite simply just had the. For 8 hours until they could be heard and it's a long. Read I fool you know you are going to say you read you call so when the Denver and I have to the right by my eyes or 3 spots up behind me. Somewhere I know there was a couple of services behind us as I left the left Edinburgh just before and so there's still people like you there just night or maybe fishing for 1314 hours and then when you get to see some of the train approaches to. Hear it they are obviously using the reply sorry 1st I thought it was going all the. You know for about a couple of hours and they don't see those every half hour and we don't know what purpose movie that was they don't say every half hour or so it was people are going to. Train the stuff and they don't show any other means of a full recovery vehicles we do it all when we don't have to me is time of arrival for you and then that went on for 7 hours you can imagine each and I been told he still goes oh what's. The 1st sentence. And I can imagine the impact on whatever else people had to do that day I think being I meant to be in Bristol right by in Bristol. But when I asked for a focus off and then I thought to myself Well surely OK to have 11 train at night which is a lot further. Obviously I haven't because it was an A I recently. Know going to Bristol to see so I didn't feel free to give a shot to have you be seeing in Bristol. Because my family are sitting waiting for me right fortunately I have a wholesaler ange the London for the season so. Yeah I mean talk enough to find accommodation or any IRA tiredly thank conversation rather people but if they also wanted to take a stroll try to break and you think you can imagine. Chris Dana thank you really appreciate. It yeah good luck I want to keep you up any longer and I'll go good program coming up later on by the way if you got some to listen to and if you can get it's a bad as it were if you can it's Dana thank you thank you this week to my cool as well he left New calls solo had to call this off today and with your 5 year old daughter Miko. Had a few have you just reached King's Cross his room yesterday just reached just it just left the train and I think I'm cheering for taxes right now but I have no idea of. Course. How you do a thing they are sure like a shipping a bit to get referred she is she's now obviously up and we're talking to all of these people it's very busy it's very confusing and I'm time as a Baggs internal changes. Yes trying to get you trying to get. There you should now well we're worried we're in central London but I live in and I wait and see which is a little while away so I'm hoping we're going to get into a taxi at some point. OK And. From here on in. The West of how did you cope with the housing. Was that there was a sign it was it was it was there we see it was a bit frustrating to begin with when you were looking at photos but it was you know were it was more a case of just getting information out about what was going on so sure to understand the circumstances because you sound relatively congenial about it low budget it was much more frustrating that can you understand the circumstances well there you know it's it's hard to blame on the individual in this you know is that the train staff or I presume the just relaying information that was going to them and the most frustration it was every was kind of stood for so long that I think your previous caller was kind of in the hot field I think we were either just in front of half field though just behind outfield and you know the same thing we're just stuck waiting and there was no there was no sense of kind of it was going to take that long to begin with it was you know we were you know 60 Minutes was short lived you know if things will be moving that eventually it's just it's it dawns on you that actually know this is going to be a lot longer and obviously by the time it got to about 89 o'clock I think people are just given up on sort of when they thought it was happening saying Michael thank you for telling us what about your daughter is a proper trooper you know he is she is really is not through yeah thank you really appreciate it Michael that he's been through that you can imagine what everybody's been treated and it's not over yet as you can have very Kenny's know of and they'll be chaos tomorrow as well not least on that line I imagine. Anyway let's move on Donald Trump says there's support across Congress for tougher background checks for gun buyers following 2 shootings in El Paso and Dayton which killed 31 people last weekend with us now in Washington is our North America Correspondent Peter Burrows do we know any more about what these tougher background checks will consist of Peter there's very little detail Darton this is Dan Trump talking as he's leaving the White House saying that there'd been a as you say tremendous support for changing the background check laws of course background laws exist at the moment the point is that there needs to be tougher more stringent background checks especially to try to identify people with mental illness and this is something the president has talked about a lot who with a gun in their hands saying it wouldn't be clearly a good idea and that the laws as they stand need to be much tighter this is a slow process there were and what is frustrating a lot of Democrats is that they have already in the House of Representatives passed a background check law but the Republicans haven't jumped on board and what isn't clear and it seems as if what President Trump is talking about is not simply supporting what the Democrats have already thrush now but pursuing something new which could take a long time and when talking of background checks the president is talking about people who are mentally ill they seem to be shoving the blame always on people with mental health conditions which can be you know most people in actual fact just wonder whether this is enough and you understand why I'm saying this from our perspective certainly many of us who look at this is putting a plaster over a very deep wound in America. Yes and I've heard this a lot and I know a lot of people who are frustrated with simply talk of tweaking some existing laws maybe bringing in new laws but simply as they apply to background checks now unless America decides to change the Constitution to make it illegal for people to bear arms which frankly no one can see happening all they can do is bring in new laws to restrict the number of people who are getting guns or restrict the conditions or perhaps make it harder for people who have a history of mental illness all of those issues which the president is very very keen to talk about and he often. Talks about it isn't the gun that triggers itself it's the human being and often it's a human being with with mental illness but equally there are many other people who and indeed some who would like to see the Constitution changed and make the United States more like other countries like the U.K. Where you you don't have an automatic right to own a gun from what we know of the 2 shootings last weekend it seems as if the gunman in the Dayton
