Well then it was 15 years ago last week when a middle spread ended 128 years of hurt in when their 1st major trophy the League Cup victory. Over Bolton Wanderers at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has gone down in history as the club's finest moment of the copper and began with a one nil win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday September the 24th and ended in glory on Sunday February the 29th in South Wales 5 years ago I interviewed the man who masterminded the cup when Steve McLaren about the whole run and tonight is another opportunity for you to hear it and he begins by saying it was a defining moment in the history of the club I think it was a breakthrough for the club. Obviously it's been to finals before and that was well documented thoughts about here we go again so it was a case of not the joy of get into the final it was actually the pressure of of winning a final So I think when it was a breakthrough for for the club for the supporters for the town but especially for Steve Gibson who you know plowed so much money and was was so 100 percent behind the club that it was fantastic for him it was what I call a breakthrough for him and the club and I suppose a breakthrough for myself in terms of committing to management going from a number 2 to number one to Englishman in the final an Englishman can win a trophy for so many years and so and so and that was kind of you know the 1st 18 months were pretty difficult Middlesborough was sorting things out got a good team together and then made the breakthrough by winning a trophy so you know that's the ultimate a manager wants to do and I did that with the stuff and the players and especially Steve Gibson Do you dare to dream when it's September and you drawn against Brighton home in the 2nd round do you set out obviously want to win the Copa clearly put it such early days the final the semifinals not even in your mind I think it was interesting because I think I don't know whether it's the 1st season of the 2nd season but I remember going to Ipswich in the League Cup and filled in a not so strong. And losing and believable criticism afterwards. And you know in the future it's worked with with Mr Gibson also and we needed that because it was kind of a kick of the backside for me that trophies and cups. Important to Middlesborough they're very important to Mills but they want to win a trophy so filled in a week until he was not on the agenda so from then on I knew the importance of the cups so we put a big emphasis on every cup that we went into and we played a strong team as we possibly could and I think in the end over the 5 years that we had we were we built kind of a cook team. Did well in the league in the fall season but basically we got a good team and we were a cookie that somehow we got any Gys by by the coach and I think that's because of the history of mills were in the past of getting to finals and not doing anything with such a big story you have to make the breakthrough now Brighton it took extra time and that's typical isn't it because in hindsight you go on to win the cup bought the smash takes extra time and it's a bit of a struggle on a September night in front of a crowd of less than a level and I was a nice dog. It was a strange game that was welcome Christine I think yes the gold Yeah Greetings made a run just seeing where the ball is 1st time. C I. Was almost up but I was across another turn so I tried pretty after good work from care true I'm lucky I'm interested almost But here's the ball into the net right close and that's what Cook runs are all about and that's why I often say now you know when we do start to cope you know these games at the beginning OK against lesser teams or whatever teams you should when you know these are important these are the ones you've got to get through to get to the big ones and we're going followed it was a 21 win at the J.P. Stadium as was and then a couple of rounds against really tough opposition in Everton and Spurs Everton at the Riverside in the penalties there and guys commend Yetta got the crucial spot kick that night and I remember in the commentary Paul Koz alongside me saying he's not going to miss he's not going to miss he's got so much European I'm not as confident obviously but he doesn't miss and then Frank had to do it White Hart Lane lastly experienced on the world in the Champions League no chance of the missile crisis in India turned against Nigel Martyn was. We Are Church right church or a possible down he's just made it worse for myself I replace it with all of the sports going to be a trivia area on the other spring there sprang care to lift. 7 the city's coaching staff you are standing on the sideline your heart must be in your mouth in which any Middlesborough phone Yeah I think it's a strange one because you know that was kind of a Coburn of penalties wasn't you know even in the final play a large part in it and we had an experienced team we put together quite an experienced T. And so I had no real problems because we had sports or in goal who's a good shot stopper good size imposing when it comes to penalties and you know I mean I remember many saves me from penalties you know them in the one at Manchester City that got us into Europe for the 2nd year so we had a good goalkeeper We had experience plays so we always went into a penalty shoot out. Quite confident How important is he kept in times like this because Gareth Southgate was that the Middlesbrough captain he was one of the 1st people you brought to the club it was a constant theme throughout your time there and eventually obviously he succeeded you mentioned you've built an experienced team but yet has to have a leader is the dictionary definition of leader wasn't it yeah yeah knowing when to tip twenty's and when to also so it was good in that respect. I think we had leaders throughout the team I think it was it was an experienced team . And you know we have the South get Calkins was meant as gently Neal you know we had quite a bit of that and said Botha I mean there were old ladies in not just him it was a tough dressing room and we build that over the the 2 or 3 years and that's why I think you know we were a good cook. Because we had that experience we had the leaders on the field and got through the armband but everybody else chipped in and and it was great as a manager and that's what you do and you know we credit Steve Gibson for you know standing by his and saying throughout the 1st 3 years even for 5 years you know. He had to and it's fork out a lot of money to bring in these places that that brought the success. Steve McClaren talking to me about League Cup win back in 2004 was the 15th anniversary last week so we thought we would like to relive it again you can't hear it enough times can you were one of the highlights of the court room for me definitely that victory over Spurs on penalties White Hart Lane I remember getting back home and around about 45 o'clock in the morning if memory serves me the M one was short off on the way home bought it was worth it it was worth it for that penalty shootout win and Frank keeping his cool pate rubble on Twitter says great memories of the Cook final itself was an amazing day great joyful scenes at the end and seeing Gareth Southgate lift the trophy it was as good as it gets old the tears flow and there was plenty of tea is that day tears of joy for every boy or a fun certainly at the Millennium Stadium that afternoon keep them coming 080-859-5952 call as it is free tech state one trouble 3 Start your message with the word tease you can tweet us of course at B.B.C. T.V. Spot where they will also be talking with the bulls boss Craig Betts and the bar manager Tony Pulis of course now for part 2 then of my interview with the former Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren as we celebrate 15 years since that League Cup win over Bolton were up to the 1st leg of the semifinal and a daunting prospect of a trip to North London and to Highbury to face Arsenal in that period I think we played Arsenal fall times once in the league F.A. Cup and twice in the leak so I mean that was as big an as pressured as you can get because Arsenal were never a favorite team to play it's. Disappointing results against them and we lost in the cup for 4 nil I think you were last in the league for nil so either side it was quite a daunting task no matter what team Arsenal played to have them in the semifinal we were probably just pleased to be in the semi final instance such a big game. But I think the biggest thing was seeing the team sheet hybrid. The 1st game and put the fringe plays in and I think I think. Time not a lack of respect but we know what we're doing at that time and they have quality play something they believe they could win with that thing but we believe we had a chance and I think it was Janine Young's game that 1st like. He was tremendous one of the reasons why we brought him back with the big games and games like that and he took it by the scruff of the neck delivered the the all important goal and then that was the time the actual time I thought well we can start dreaming now kedgeree in the penalty area down then get so here's Johnny to go in Siberia. Was was. And there's a wobbly moment in the 2nd leg because both us and then gets it all off to a brilliant start but then edu equalizes and half of Teesside just think you know you we go again typical Burra but they hold all NE and you go through the edge of the area was hit by chop was part of a. Were was was that was or was a great celebration on the night but you realize of course there's an awful lot of hard work because you've got to win a final yet again that was you know I think in most of the clubs you'd get to a final and when you'd be absolutely delighted over the moon and and be celebrating it but I don't think we did I think basically because we are not of games ahead of us in the league in with the playoffs and all again in the cup and the F.A. Cup this time so it was I can have subdued at the time you know one of the great achievement but we go into a final and then everybody is saying well Middlesbrough always lose a final so. It was twofold great great to go into the final but then the pressure seem to actually heighten. Because of the expectation Yeah did that transmit itself through because he can be a bit protected up at the training ground day in day out because you're actually away from the town of rock cliff park and but does the fact that Yemen doesn't roll was known as Cup finals did did that get through to the team at all well I don't know I don't think it did I think I think the key to winning the cup really the key to winning the Cup was the preparation. And the key was 2 things one was the team we had we talked about all the experience and the leaders in the dressing room. They could handle it. Was no problem to them they've been in big games before this was just another game an opportunity you know that I said you need your voting and you played big games big games then an accounting final So we're no hesitation with the place be ready and I had a fantastic help and buy the stuff the stuff fantastic and you know it was the preparation and sometimes you know I have a tendency to overprepare I think the stuff really really worked to to make sure that we prepared right not overpaid so they take a lot of credit in the build up you know to that week and from then on parking it and coming to it concentrate on the league and doing that stuff played a tremendous part in that as did the players but when it came to the final that week was as good a preparation for a game for for probably all my career really when you talk about overpreparing do you learn a lot you are obviously worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson for years at Manchester United is it is it times like that when that grounding when that learning comes into its own really well yes you go you've got to let the team go interest the players and and we should you know we could do that because the. Spirits in the team but you know I remember I wanted to do this there this session on Bolton the long ball we had to define set plays with it and I put it on a chart put it on the on the wall and and that was Monday to Sunday all mapped out every training session every minute of the day. The stuff looked at it. To tear it down really said is too much going to kill the player overprepared so we trimmed it down to one session I think we had media day on the Monday one session on the Tuesday. Wednesday we had. A tennis tournament at the David law. And I'm thinking preparing for this game and I'm thinking we're on a tennis tournament on a Wednesday and this stuff got it exactly right Bill basic theory stay very simple about Steve around. Money Jimmy as well and said Let's just relax we're up at it we
