If that applies to you being spoiled if you have a mom to spoil her spoiling her if you met remembering your mom family then you're doing that enjoying today as well it's 5 past 11 Sylvie's here with a Mothering Sunday special after midday but in the meantime we're doing a bit of gardening with some brownies that have gone apparent soon to be come May the head gardener Westin Gardens which is all jolly exciting the grubs could be rhino bull grubs they're big and ugly beetles are rare now so move them to a safe place alternative rhino but I've never heard of that if you. Haven't someone having a laugh to rhinoceroses Let's have a little a little look never heard of that so let's have a look and again the part of the problem is I'm not being flippant all these things same to me Yeah this could this is an interesting one though. Yeah I was the same with with composting grubs in compost I think as gardeners we would. Say that compost is pretty much 100 percent great for the garden there's very few drawbacks and negatives about using compost in the garden environment is all very positive you're never sort of told about compost or be careful mind out for these. Sort of warned that this doesn't come up in conversation so quite often a lot of the the bugs and beasties in compost heaps are beneficial breaking down that rotting plant material OK Thank you Ryan and you want to ask runnable thank you very much Jenny and Farmer morning both of you able to identify these please never seen anything like it it looks like holy but the clump of beautiful tiny flowers are unusual to see at least for me let's have a little look name that Holly and we've got a holly leaf with bright yellow flowers in the middle and I've never seen anything like they seen that he said Mahoney are among the Mahoney really and I think Oh honey I could. Only ammonium our own M.E.H. Yeah oh yeah and then Roly I'm so holy are Lex acrophobia. Very similar very similar Pikachu nice kid isn't a going to tell you anything and you believe it yeah you said they were Rhino bird flowers out of believe you when you said you'd never seen anything like that before I thought it would go really I could say what I want yeah make it up Maureen says good morning German gardening explain please can you say whether or not this Bush can be pruned it's got rather big it is encroaching on a rather lovely tree please don't say the reply can be heard on listen again because I have no idea how to do that Maureen Well I might try to be helpful when I . Type up some of these things that Tom's making up off the top of the head and then places tricky it is tricky I'm not sure what the plant is I don't know if you'll be able to tell from that picture he's getting in good and close them or in . Box to me here which can be. Clipped into tape right shapes up and down the country so yes can be proved the most time this up then so I see through and see this is why I like he was so commentating he thinks what he's going to type messages says box. Evergreen can be proved in lots of different shapes to. Be pruned shall I be clever and say no i Player included in this I must say it's dipping in fires and you know I said it would be the bigger man maybe we think it's boxy as can be prudent cases their own shaped and Tom put your name on your arms and. Lovely stuff thank you very much a Maureen and you're right be the bigger person is so important sometimes. They forget we are going to let you know the end of this hour whether Tom is still on Dig it once he becomes the gardening expert or west Dean and at the moment it's exactly the way in the balance to tell you who's been rejected 3 tone Joe until yes we're going to ratify the House this week has got something to say about Joan Tom Another question please forgot to ask earlier on I left some daily abodes in various parts as I was too lazy to dig them up honest recently pulled them up to plant something new what should I do with them in the meantime I feel like I want to put them in pots again but don't have anything to put them in at the moment and I have no idea where to plant them again if not imports could take on the ground heavy clay soil they wouldn't like heavy clay come the winter Rachel but you might be right through the summer so they were imports are now out of pots yet. Sort of lumps of soil with daily is in yes I would say if you can get those into some sort of pot plastic container with drainage holes that would be beneficial because Daley is can't really go into the risk of frost is past and we're looking end of May really and certainly with your clay soil they were quite enjoy a clay soil through the summer because that's quite often a fertile soil and is most to return to. But then have to can be lifted and brought back in when the 1st frost is coming through so if you do invest in some containers or able to have some containers from somebody some garden centers give away free pots for recycling and whiskey they started doing that now there's a big area where people can go and help themselves to parts it will be well worth it because you need to look after these plants and to the end of my output invest in some parts I don't want to think I'm going off but today you can't you know you can't just leave them hanging around they don't like it was a situation through the glass that Mary do we need some more callers of you says a few more calls he said it must be me I think they hate me now don't be like that I don't think I want to D.V.C. So 60802321 I feel fine. Are you that right in the garden center would you say it's relatively easy to care for and worth the investment Katyn hassocks because you don't want to blow what's 25 percent pony and whatever it is $25.00 quid on something that's going to die after Google and that's going to bother me. I was there are slightly trickier there beyond just sort of ordinary spider plants ferns that sort of thing they are a bit temperamental think if you can provide a nice warm reasonably literate. Environment if you've got a bit of a knack with house plants and I'd say it's worth it but if you tend to see them off the premises quite quickly then I wouldn't necessarily spend 25 pounds on it is a pony and right. Pony is 25 quid Oh OK monkey's 500 grand This is the pound and we don't dress jewels in Bishop stone a rose pruning novice and needs help here hello novice Jules How are you good morning yeah very very confused. Yesterday. By the road. Again did I ask why. My head because a lot of the bush rows is in the rows so the half 1000000 rows bed. Have got a bit leggy and they call these sort of red leaves and shoots and I know I sort of had to some 2nd to my hand and I thought I don't know what I'm doing what should I be doing if I left it to lay up some rows when you. Just need a bit of guidance and it sounds like you could be a member of our panel He's described the criteria beautifully they're standing confuse the pair secretary's knee and what do I do join us on a Sunday. So these are sort of like the David Austen type roses trees of the shrub roses Yeah they're they're a mish mishmash of different ones we bore Sandringham yesterday some ones for Mother's Day. But we you know there's a mishmash of all roses new roses and yeah so it's a bit confusing because some of them are got quite old some of them a like 4 or 5 high now and they're getting a bit leggy and I just don't know which bits actually cut off or kind or tall so if they're with the flowers and hybrid tea's or the floor Abunda the sort of the old fashioned The bedding type roses you know what sort of parks department type roses . Those ones you can actually prune down quite hard is that the little ones that don't grow very hard I know they're normally about sort of 3 feet yeah 34 feet high and they've got almost like Goldblatt like flowers they're not necessarily overly scented but they're more showy you can prune those quite hard normally to go down and follow the stem. To about sort of 12 inches from the ground and you want to get an outward facing bud so what we don't want to encourage you to do is prune to a part that's facing on the inside of the plant because you want a nice open center so if that part is facing out of the plant the chute will grow away from the center of the plant and give you much more open habit like if we're looking at the David Austen type roses the more scented roses. Generally you want to reduce those to about waist height or by about a 3rd. And again looking to prune them down to an outward facing bad so away from the center of the rows. And what I say to my guys is uncomplicated So if you've got lots of thin bits of growth across thing and heading into the middle cut those off plus to the stem so why dealy are left with this open goblet like shape of pencils some ice stems which would then give you nice strong growth as a consequence so when I say uncomplicated just open the whole thing up right and what do I do about it I get a bit confused about the migrant THE PINK Well you know this which one of the leaves looks upon the butts but they both come up with some of the Pink and I think do I cut that one or do I. Get there's no problem at all going to believe that this date so. That's OK so with a lot of the shrub roses in the hybrid teas the flowers will come a bit later so the different colored foliage so sometimes you get red buds emergence sometimes green That would depend on the variety of The Rose there might be slightly different but at this stage it's all fairly edge right and should I cut just above where early fall but you know. That's it so when you cut a rose you allow for a little bit of die back so some of the stem might die back so if you cut it really close to a bud sometimes that little bit of dye back will then take the bad with it right so by allow a little bit of stem to die back before it goes into the bud you know and a slightly sloping cut. Away from the bird so sloping away from the cut so the water then runs away from the bud right and I mean I was briefly engaged in another biscuit then so you may have covered this but now would we need to the outward facing thing as well as I can my reason when he was very pleased with it and then when they came up they all faced the fence the flowers the mother when mad yes radiating out from the center so you're looking for about that facing away from the center of the rows and away from the fence ideally as well right one very quick question about I do it to do I'm Rosemary no new fiber I want to I do my part so put a sort of handful 2 handfuls around the base of the rose you know give it a drink and then moche on top of it with the manure that you have thank you and then you get a flush of rose flowers. June time and when that 1st flush starts to wane then put another couple of handfuls of Rose feet down give it a good drink and you'll find that I think the rose up and boost it which would then give you a 2nd flush brilliant thank you very much would like jewels Thank you bye bye but I now mixed We have an unbroken who is pruning a plum tree it says on the screen but I think I'm guessing it's a plum tree an is it you cry right yes. Hello. I'm one of the morning my son an orphan who thinks I have to to this problem but I haven't. Well he won't know you think so you can just lie to him that I won't tell us what my mother in law would do she just lie to me and just pretend that I care whether to pretend you are my No no not so I'm going to bring it straight for you so it's a kind of bush it's now I. Understand but. Now is the time to prove now that it is beginning to come into patents. Wish Coming up it's being not being merely proved up to now but to put out an intro annual by only time now to print a little bit somewhere OK I am and yet for the 1st 3 or 4 years you want to look at formative pruning so you're trying to establish a good tree for the future yeah as far as plums are concerned and cherries they suffer with something called Silverleaf a lot more prevalent in the winter So normally we prune them in the summer but a good friend of mine was saying that when the plant is actively growing you prune them when it's actively growing so it flushes out the wounds and it's less of a problem so I've actually tackled some of our wall train plums this week with a lady called Door that works on the team with us we had a go at those because everything's moving in the blossom is that we know that the sap is rising you know I'd say you're OK to do it now. Any plum tree or cherry tree you want to be quite minimum with the minimal with the pruning because they don't respond very well to pruning I see so what I would say with your pruning is you want to obviously establish a leader because you want to get a decent shape tree in the future yeah if anything is dead or dying or crossing Yeah uncomplicate the. Canopy of the tree but keep it quite minimal. OK so if there's an area that sort of rubbing or clustered you want to encourage a nice straight stem heading skywards Yeah if you want the tree to establish just you can always go back the following year and cut a little bit more off sort of go at this tree thinking I'm going to give it a really good Sawtelle and then that will do it for the next 2 or 3 years be quite reserved in what you do try and imagine how the tree will grow once you've pruned it so. You're trying to imply encourage that to grow the plum to grow into the kind of tree that will be there for 3040 years right thing is save the long shot sort of shots out there kind of old probably 3 foot long yeah. Do it do I touch those back but if you've got them out because there's no there's not much blossom I'm not a bus MS so much lower down yes but if it's 3 or 4 years old you should start to see some fruit developing now with those long shoots that's the sort of next tier of the canopy so I had long as the tree was balanced Yeah I think I would would leave those because you want that canopy to develop and have another tier Yeah which they could be giving you. Yeah I think probably. My been going because it's a big country and
