So these are sort of like the David Austen type roses trees of the shrub roses Yeah they're they're a mish mishmash of different ones we bore Sandringham yesterday some ones for Mother's Day. But we you know there's a mishmash of all roses new roses and yeah so it's a bit confusing because some of them are got quite old some of them a like 4 or 5 high now and they're getting a bit leggy and I just don't know which bits actually cut off or kind or tall so if they're with the flowers and hybrid tea's or the floor Abunda the sort of the old fashioned The bedding type roses you know what sort of parks department type roses . Those ones you can actually prune down quite hard is that the little ones that don't grow very hard I know they're normally about sort of 3 feet yeah 34 feet high and they've got almost like Goldblatt like flowers they're not necessarily overly scented but they're more showy you can prune those quite hard normally to go down and follow the stem. To about sort of 12 inches from the ground and you want to get an outward facing bud so what we don't want to encourage you to do is prune to a part that's facing on the inside of the plant because you want a nice open center so if that part is facing out of the plant the chute will grow away from the center of the plant and give you much more open habit like if we're looking at the David Austen type roses the more scented roses. Generally you want to reduce those to about waist height or by about a 3rd. And again looking to prune them down to an outward facing bad so away from the center of the rows. And what I say to my guys is uncomplicated So if you've got lots of thin bits of growth across thing and heading into the middle cut those off plus to the stem so why dealy are left with this open goblet like shape of pencils some ice stems which would then give you nice strong growth as a consequence so when I say uncomplicated just open the whole thing up right and what do I do about it I get a bit confused about the migrant THE PINK Well you know this which one of the leaves looks upon the butts but they both come up with some of the Pink and I think do I cut that one or do I. Get there's no problem at all going to believe that this date so. That's OK so with a lot of the shrub roses in the hybrid teas the flowers will come a bit later so the different colored foliage so sometimes you get red buds emergence sometimes green That would depend on the variety of The Rose there might be slightly different but at this stage it's all fairly edge right and should I cut just above where early fall but you know. That's it so when you cut a rose you allow for a little bit of die back so some of the stem might die back so if you cut it really close to a bud sometimes that little bit of dye back will then take the bad with it right so by allow a little bit of stem to die back before it goes into the bud you know and a slightly sloping cut. Away from the bird so sloping away from the cut so the water then runs away from the bud right and I mean I was briefly engaged in another biscuit then so you may have covered this but now would we need to the outward facing thing as well as I can my reason when he was very pleased with it and then when they came up they all faced the fence the flowers the mother when mad yes radiating out from the center so you're looking for about that facing away from the center of the rows and away from the fence ideally as well right one very quick question about I do it to do I'm Rosemary no new fiber I want to I do my part so put a sort of handful 2 handfuls around the base of the rose you know give it a drink and then moche on top of it with the manure that you have thank you and then you get a flush of rose flowers. Understand but. Now is the time to prove now that it is beginning to come into patents. Wish Coming up it's being not being merely proved up to now but to put out an intro annual by only time now to print a little bit somewhere OK I am and yet for the 1st 3 or 4 years you want to look at formative pruning so you're trying to establish a good tree for the future yeah as far as plums are concerned and cherries they suffer with something called Silverleaf a lot more prevalent in the winter So normally we prune them in the summer but a good friend of mine was saying that when the plant is actively growing you prune them when it's actively growing so it flushes out the wounds and it's less of a problem so I've actually tackled some of our wall train plums this week with a lady called Door that works on the team with us we had a go at those because everything's moving in the blossom is that we know that the sap is rising you know I'd say you're OK to do it now. Any plum tree or cherry tree you want to be quite minimum with the minimal with the pruning because they don't respond very well to pruning I see so what I would say with your pruning is you want to obviously establish a leader because you want to get a decent shape tree in the future yeah if anything is dead or dying or crossing Yeah uncomplicate the. Canopy of the tree but keep it quite minimal. OK so if there's an area that sort of rubbing or clustered you want to encourage a nice straight stem heading skywards Yeah if you want the tree to establish just you can always go back the following year and cut a little bit more off sort of go at this tree thinking I'm going to give it a really good Sawtelle and then that will do it for the next 2 or 3 years be quite reserved in what you do try and imagine how the tree will grow once you've pruned it so. You're trying to imply encourage that to grow the plum to grow into the kind of tree that will be there for 3040 years right thing is save the long shot sort of shots out there kind of old probably 3 foot long yeah. Do it do I touch those back but if you've got them out because there's no there's not much blossom I'm not a bus MS so much lower down yes but if it's 3 or 4 years old you should start to see some fruit developing now with those long shoots that's the sort of next tier of the canopy so I had long as the tree was balanced Yeah I think I would would leave those because you want that canopy to develop and have another tier Yeah which they could be giving you.
