Sussex driver 5 with cerebral Good afternoon drive time through until 7 o'clock this evening in this hour as demolition takes place at a devastating building supplies warehouse in Port Slade we asked whether the building could have been saved if sprinklers had been installed remembering a Brighton hero service is held to mark 100 years since the death in battle of a local soldier who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross and we bring you the latest on the Russian spy scandal as it's confirmed the death of a Russian businessman in London earlier this week is now being treated as murder 3 weeks following a wriggle room. With a time now coming up to 8 minutes past 5 o'clock you're listening to b.b.c. Sussex Dr Thomas serger all rounding up all the day's top stories for Sussex now could sprinklers have saved buildings destroyed by fire yesterday fire crews are still at the scene of yesterday's major fire on an industrial estate in Port slate smoke from the blaze at Chandler building supplies in Basin road was seen from several miles away and people living nearby is still being advised to keep doors and windows shot today demolition work has got underway in around a quarter of the devastated building has been taken down the duty manager of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Nigel KUSA access investigations into how the fire started a continuing we haven't got identified cause its investigation will likely go on for the next 24 to 48 hours while he gets actually assured of that we're completely extinguished the story. Well earlier I spoke to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Mark Andres fire is completely under control we're starting to pull away some of our fire resources but you local people are saying there is still some smoke so we are doing what we call dumping down so final bits of tidying up of the incident and starting to go into the next phase which of course is 5 best occasion and working with our police colleagues to understand exactly what caused the fire and what lessons we can learn and share with you what is a sion as to what started a more measures can be taking teacher to prevent such a recurrence so I understand the other 12 hours but instead it's fully under control now a lot still has been on some one issue that's been Macy's that is the issue of sprinklers and whether that could have made a difference to this building. Yes there were no sprinklers we understand no sleepers in the building it's clear to the pharmacy service that sprinklers make a huge difference in these situations they certainly act to raise the alarm they certainly act to minimize and control the initial stages of the fire and therefore prevent the spread which ensures that the Fire Rescue Service bottom again reduces the impact on the clockwise and selves and clearly means that we can prevent the damage to the building and there are hundreds of examples of where sprinklers have been stored they do all of that and the business can reopen if not the next day in the next few days and be back up and running doing what they do best as a business and that obviously protect lives and protect livelihoods and protect communities so it's a very strong message for us and we do sales Brinkley's make a difference I'm not suggesting it would have made a difference in this situation specifically because we don't know the details but more broadly sprinklers are something that businesses should strongly consider very soggy in this case a lot of damage has been done hasn't it that that's right so you could spring has made a difference well that's the question and that's why our farmers question we'll try and uncover. The business you know I thought I was a business because clearly a lot of livelihoods have been affected we hope that I can get back on the faith as quickly as possible but you have seen from social media attracts a lot of tension locally so there is an impact on the community and certainly for the people the good people that work at that business in the business themselves it's going to be a very difficult very difficult road ahead for them and in terms of the surroundings I know yesterday people were advised to keep the windows shot what's the situation with that now. People do you smile or are affected by the last remnants of the smoke from the saying that he said possible to keep innocent or shocked but the situation is well in the control the next few hours should see the last of those embers in that smoke. Start to complete dissipate but in the meantime if you if you are active and just general advice is to stay indoors and keep those men as close as I said. Well let's turn to sport now and Brighton and Hove Albion looked to reach the semi finals of the f.a. Cup for only the 2nd time in their history tomorrow evening the seagulls travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United and seagulls manager Chris Hughton says you can't read too much into the Champions League defeat to Seville or on cheese day I did see their last game. You know the game before that very very good and Bates that same in in a live a poor that applying as well as anybody in the country at the moment and and that's what can happen when you're playing games that at the top level you played against top teams and and it can happen you know what we all know about much as annoyed as they have huge quality they are they are 2nd in this division and I'm probably only 2nd because Manchester City haven't an outstanding season so that's the magnitude of what they are in and around that they're going to have days are not such good days for him and. Most of our focus has to be on making sure that we play well enough what are say as a team win a lot of games and the same that this moment of our 2nd in the division and already because as I say I. Haven't you know a wonderful wonderful season and I see a manager that she used to winning trophies and that's the quality of call and and that's the only thing that we can concentrate on with respect a hugely difficult game against them some big and very very good players because she won the f.a. Cup as a player where does this game rank for you in terms of your management career. It's right up there you know the 2 the only thing that would be more favorable would be . A core for no tie against Manchester United at the Amex you know which certainly is one that would be certainly more favorable for us but so now it's right up there you know there isn't one player that won't want to play there is one supporter we spoke about and the long journey but everybody that's decided to make that journey that there won't be one support the that won't be looking forward to the guy so yes it's right up there these are the moments that you that's you work as hard as what you do for and what it's been a good a tough season you know so far in other likes the likes of our selfs generally don't get in a court finals and and semifinals and you have to give it all you've got Does it help in a way that you know that it takes time and houses at this stage that came in last season it's a one off and the healthy. I don't know I suppose it would be incredibly good to be in in that position and we would have to apply very value very well for that but I suppose in the past you know what has been the case is that you know if you're if you're an extra charge and that. Whatever the last 510 minutes of extra charm and you know there's a possibility you could take him back to to a hug I'm then sometimes maybe the approach is a little bit different certainly approach from from hunting so it will be different so so whether they're I think in the in the heyday of when it happens I don't think they'll be any change in the what happens but I suppose there are things that could happen well we've got full coverage from Old Trafford tomorrow afternoon b.b.c. Sussex sport starts at 5 o'clock listening to b.b.c. Sussex Drive time 60 minutes past 5 now a remarkable story of heroic behavior is on the way tonight in a memorial service in the unveiling of a commemorative stone for a war hero who died in March 918 aged just 35 years and his story was so incredible he received the Victoria Cross his remarkable bravery we hear more about that in just a moment. For headlines this hour after noon Sussex Police say a former police constable from Brighton who's been sentenced to 2 years in prison for possessing indecent images of children has let down the victims the force and the whole of Sussex the foreign secretary Boris Johnson has said Russian's President Putin is overwhelmingly likely to have ordered the nerve agent attack in Seoul spray and the managing director of the building at the heart of yesterday's foreign port Slate has praised East Sussex Fire and Rescue and the whole local community for their support b.b.c. Sussex struck up a new trial. Ok right busy across the coast to feel like a 27 at the moment eastbound into Chichester with delays factsheet Fulsom west side is struggle to in their delays mostly eastbound again into our intell and around the cross this junction of the West is to see what we need to wait for heading down towards which that too is slowed and then again the east found a 259 is a struggle westbound a $27.00 is queuing from southward into long since 859 sure the 9 with the h u h 3 looking very busy kids continue through Kingston and there is no sorrow today a cell found a 26 coming down engine I think in self-righteous is very slow guess what some 85 non there Churchill arriving to delays the long queues approaching the couple rounds mounds of poll data and directions on the 859 states with little common keys continue on a 21 tastings I mean 8 to 95 as to when to northbound into hell should merge What sold you off on a 265 around he failed the still life the a 2 $83.00 westbound storing to and congestion on $8.00 to $7.00 to around mid western And so at 12 as well as westbound into Cowfold the a $24.00 is pretty solid southbound to the Washington roundabout little so slow to warn him and traffic you're in from the brutal stage announced rushing coolly out he spotted as well as delays of 86 for Top 40 and crawling down by some 25 still slopped adulthood from just off the street at Swan Lake in summary from back home for a between letterhead and a 3 right the way around to see and then again from Staines t.v. Rai station today Sunday breakfast last Sunday we heard about the struggles some women face as they campaign for gender equality in their faith communities experiences some of the women heart breaking in the churches these attitudes of exclusion and suits of such any really have no place within our communities and in other rallying cry for the challenged to be accessible to all not just on Sundays. But. The memories of a community Sunday breakfast this Sunday grins a sits in for me with more inspirational music and conversation and another school assembly am from Sunday morning from 6 b.b.c. Sussex Well listen to this an incredible story a memorial service and the unveiling of a commemorative stone for a war hero from Brighton has been held today 2nd left tenant Ernest Bale was just 35 years old when he died in March 980 in the 1st World War he posthumously received the Victoria Cross for his remarkable bravery reporter Paul Sawtelle went to the ceremony at the price a Mormon Morial. Around 200 people have gathered here the war memorial on the old Sting for the unveiling of the Victoria Cross commemorative star. Second of turning this beautiful broad. Term Sussex free. The commemorative stuff. And the commode to stone read 2nd lieutenant and his spiel and Xandra Princess of Wales and go to regiment 21st to the 22nd of March 1918. In Robert Green Morton I am the great. News. And I'm Valerie Bundy I'm the great niece of May by day who is Ernest Bill's fiance Martin what do you know about Ernest because he was quite a remarkable chap was known as a young boy to be told your great uncle was awarded the Victoria Cross which is highest award for gallantry was something I never forget just briefly sum up what he did. On that day he led a small party along the unoccupied Well the British lines had a space in it and there were 4 machine gun there so he led a small party along and took out the 4 machine guns and later in the day. One of his soldiers had obviously been injured and was very close to the then German lines and he carried him back on his back and. Apparently then a shell burst nearby and some of the shrapnel wounded him but he got the man back and sadly later died that day when you recount that how does that make you feel. Him force. Of history it's very emotional yes. I mean I was struck by the heroism but the other element to this story is your great. Fiance so much that's right and through things that not since that she's shown me which has been fantastic we found they were due to be married on his next leave and in fact Martin had a letter which was before his last leave and he's talking about coming on leave to Martin's father and of course we know that's not going to happen which is why it's so poignant and sad and we think about what might have been had he made that leave we know he made a heroic at but never completed the other thing that he was intending to do which was to marry me and your great aunt whom I never married and no and she had a very full life and she was a lovely lady not be surprised so this finding out about this how many people had Aunty May as well as my sister and brother and myself there was a lot of people had an Aunty May But of course no one ever had. Or a wife but she does have a full life and she was a wonderful woman but just some of both of you have actually found the service both of you Martin very very impressive and very poignant actually very emotional much motion I thought because you know it's a story from a 100 years ago and I think the service brought it back to life and made it something very current for today and for us to think and I know that Martin's also said the whole act of getting ready she brought to mind a lot of emotions which we hadn't been expecting that they have been actually really quite nice to have to one of those 2 people. Credit this news mazing story proves himself on the reporting this morning from that bright new movie more hill a ceremony and service this. Commemorating the remarkable war hero from Bryson 2nd left tenant and his failed just 35 when he died in March 9 11800 days ago now still to come into night's program then we're talking farming a little later on and today we talk more about conservation all of the downsides to a local farmer also hearing more about said dementia care and how people are concerned about loneliness if a service is caught that's all coming up in tonight's b.b.c. Sussex Drive time all the day's top stories for your local area now other news today the u.k. And Russia are of exchange strong words over the poisoning of expiry gosh triple and his daughter in Seoul spree Boris Johnson has laid the blame for the attack directly at the Russian president's door and the Kremlin's hit back calling his finger pointing shocking and unfair give a full Well let's now get the latest from our reporter Josie Russell say Jyoti 1st of all the foreign secretaries confident as to who's behind the navigation satanic. He is pretty confident he didn't mince his words today Boris Johnson when he gave a press conference alongside his Polish counterparts who was visiting the u.k. Together they presented what they called a united front against the East new threat from Russia and Boris Johnson said he believes it's overwhelmingly likely that Vladimir Putin is the reason why a nerve agent attack was carried out against the screen and his duty Yulia insoles Bri he talks about that nerve agent being one that's being developed by Russia stored by Russia or illegally he said the u.k. Had asked Russia to clarify how it could have come to British shores without direct Kremlin involvement had they for example notice some of their stockpile had gone missing and he said Britain had received no meaningful so he was pretty strong with his language today but it was consistent his message with the one we've been getting from 2 reason may or week there is to be no russophobia as a result of what is happening all quarreling our quarrel is with Putin's Kremlin and with his decision and we think it overwhelmingly likely that it was his decision to direct the use of a nerve agent on the streets of the u.k. On the streets of Europe for the 1st time since the 2nd World War but as Johnson said he was delighted by what he described as overwhelming response from Britain's friends and partners there's been a joint statement of support from the u.s. France and Germany a pledge of support from astray and we're told the prime minister received similar assurances from Italy today and has vowed I'm a patient responded. Not in person no but there was swift response to those comments from Boris Johnson from the Kremlin today Dmitri Peskov the Kremlin spokesman said Russia has nothing to do with this story any mention of our president in relation with this is nothing but a shocking and forgivable violation of diplomatic rules of decency also coming out of Moscow today is the news that Russia is carrying out its own criminal investigation of the intent to murder of Junia scree pal who is a Russian citizen the daughter of Sir Creep out who was also close to being murdered in Silsbee but he's a British citizen and Russia announced its investigation the death of one Nikolai Koff who is a Russian exile who's been living in London for 14 years having claimed asylum but was found dead on Monday at his home having suffered what police are saying was a compression of the neck counter-terror police said just this afternoon they're treating his death as murder but not linking it to the attempted murders of Sergei a new d.s.p. Palin source Bree whether or not we're going to get a response from Russia Today to the news that 23 of its officials are being expelled from the u.k. Is not yet clear we were expecting it but so far nothing was the Labor Party saying should be done. Well Jeremy Corbin has written a column in The Guardian newspaper saying that whilst he believes use of military nerve agents on British streets as barbaric and beyond reckless he has also said that he's backing to resume a sanctions he has called for calm heads he's warned against rushing ahead of the evidence saying that serves neither justice nor national security but critics of his within the Labor Party and on the backbenchers want more direct condemnation of Moscow Stephen Kinnock is one of them what we need is a very clear line from our leadership stating very clearly that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our lives and with the government in the auction it's paper and his supporters such as Chris Williamson a former shadow minister been saying to the b.b.c. There is nothing wrong with taking a more considered response Jerico going to simply asking reasonable questions and using common sense well thank you very much indeed bringing out today with all the latest here on b.b.c. Sussex and still to come this evening talking to Mencia and loneliness and how there are concerns that the loss of a local scheme could increase loneliness. The headline softening Sussex Police say a former police constable from Brighton who's been sentenced to 2 years in prison for possessing indecent images of children has let down the victims the force and the whole of Sussex Martin Harris previously based on the Brighton hope division pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office possession of indecent images of children and making an indecent image of a child at home crown court today the Foreign Secretary Perez Johnson has said Russia's President Putin is overwhelmingly likely to have ordered the nerve agent attack in Salzburg Russia has denied responsibility describing the claim a shocking and unforgivable it says it's opened its own investigation into the attempted murder of a. Guy And yes cripple who remain critically ill after being poisoned fire crews are still at the scene of yesterday's large fire in Port Slade smoke from the blaze at Chandler building supplies in Basin road was seen from several miles away and people living nearby is still being advised to keep doors and windows shot their managing director Andrew Cope has praised East Sussex fire rescue and the whole local community for their support and about a dozen people are reported to have been injured after a ski lift malfunctioned in the core courses mountain in Georgia video footage of the incident the result shows the lift flinging skiis violently into the air while others were forced to jump off Brighton and Hove Albion look to reach the semifinals of the f.a. Cup for only the 2nd time in their history tomorrow evening the seagulls travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United where we've got life common traits tomorrow in a sport special from 5 o'clock. Now there's been lots of discussion about the weather and the potential for it to get extremely cold let's find out what we can expect this weekend with. Hello there yes it will be quite a shock tomorrow to the system we've had some fairly spring like weather today with lovely sunshine but come tomorrow morning cloudy skies and if the easterly wind which will make it feel very cold indeed starting off dry this evening with some clear skies it's in the early hours that that cloud starts to increase that the winds change direction from the east and we'll see some rain showers to begin with temperatures will drop her around about 3 to 4 degrees 1st thing tomorrow morning but if anything through the day the air is going to get colder So what starts off as rain showers will increasingly turn to sleet and snow not everywhere seeing the showers they will be intermittent some places staying dry but with the cloudy skies and then the showers come along Sussex covered by a yellow warning so it's the lowest level of warning just a few centimeters possible in a couple of places. And there is the possibility of some disruption it's just something to keep up if you are traveling for the north into parts of Kent and into Sorry well here and warning so the snow could be heavier further north worth bearing in mind this weekend the showers then ease off through Saturday night and into early hours of Sunday morning but century quite icy with all of that freezing temperatures below freezing 1st thing on Sunday morning Sunday another very cold day feeling subzero when you add on the strength of the wind not too many showers into the afternoon temperatures around 2 to 3 degrees but a short lived cold snap this time just a couple of days by the time we get to Monday the window ready changing direction it should generally be dry and those temperatures will pick up through to mid way queer we should be back into double figures you can check out the details of the warnings and your 14 day forecast by heading to the website bbc dot co dot u.k. Sussex Drive to b.b.c. Sussex driver 5 with Sarah Durrell Now don't forget we get you into the weekend with fantastic music oldies from the sixty's seventy's and eighty's and we start with a song this is our t. Time to can you guess what song is going to be. This song is from a 985 film of the same name it was the number one hit in America and reached number 6 in the u.k. Charts if you think you know give us a text take 1333 Start your message with the word radio see if you can guess the 1st song evening wasn't great news in our funding boost of 1700000 pounds will mean a state of the art Discovery Center for rye harbor planning permission was granted last November 3 organizations have come forward to support the program the one and a half 1000000 pound contribution from the friends of rye Harper nature reserve 200000 pounds from the Garfield Weston foundation and $75000.00 pounds from the European Union Leader program this means they're always half way towards a total target of 3 and a half 1000000 now they're hoping to provide facilities from hundreds of thousands of people to schools and groups who visit the reserve transforming the whole experience joining me on the line now let's talk to Alistair Farley who's from the Sussex Wildlife Trust and the coordinator of the Rye harbor discovery project ourself and he joins me on the line now Alice to thank you for joining us on the program the saving this sounds an incredible program well it's a great project and we hope people are going to become increasingly aware of it increasingly excited by it just like we are because it really offers some fantastic fantastic facilities for visitors to the local residents and of course will help us actually sustain what we do to look after the enormous diversity 'd of habitats and wildlife that exist just describe your vision more sis going to look like well it's not going to be a match is building deliberately not because it's in the middle of an overnight and so we want to make sure that it fits very strongly within the within the environment the main environment and. If anybody's been there it's actually it's quite flat and as a result the Discovery Center itself is is a pretty flat uniform single story building it's going to be made out of sustainable materials it's going to be timber build it will have clotting we hope from sourced from local woodlands which will be an important part of the regenerating those ancient woodlands which used to supply all of the iron industry in the will. And it will have facilities like much improved education space much improved interpretation space where people can learn all about wildlife and the various issues that it faces that will be places for people to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee looking out over the river with some spectacular views and also you know these places it's a people like together Nestle buy some souvenirs from time so they can be a little bit of a retail outlet so they can do just that it sounds really thinking. Sounds an astonishing local results to have now we talked about that piece to $1700000.00 pounds you still go way to go that Western rest of the money going to come from the 64000000 dollar question we have got a number of. Further funding applications which currently out there for consideration. And we hope to have some more good news coming forward in the course of the next few months. Hopefully those funding applications will be secured However what we are going to be doing later this year in May is launching an appeal to actually get the public involved we've done lots and lots of background work to actually work with trusts and foundations to raise the money but we also need the support of the local people and the people in Sussex care about wildlife and so we will be launching it later in the in the year to get. People who are running cycling sponsored swims whatever it might be because we're going to need every bit of help we can get it sounds astonishing Now you've got some of the money then you've got the Planning Commission does it mean you can you can start the work and then gradually do as the other funds come in it's not exactly how you do these things it's very rare that one actually commences a project when you've got every single i dotted every t. Crossed and every single penny in the bank. Obviously if you're going to go out and buy a piece of kit then you need to have the full purchase price but something like this we means that actually what we have got is we've got the we've got pretty much the . The the arrangements already covered to meet the construction element of the building it's just the rest of it which we need to be continuing to want to raise funds for but like anything we've got a target we hope to achieve it and it's just a question of when not if we'll look forward to following your progress here on Dr Thomas Seth ank you so much for joining us on the program great to talk to you this evening you're very welcome that now other news today lifesaving equipment to restart hearts will be within. Over 50 stations in Sussex and thanks to a local campaign the Sussex heart charity aims to have a defibrillator in all stations all local communities in Sussex by the summer and have been working with the operators softened to achieve this now according to the British Heart Foundation there are over 30000 cardiac arrests a year in the k. Only one in 10 victims survive to be discharged from hospital a rod with the unveiling today of the latest device at Rye station so now they're using a defibrillator within minutes of someone suffering a cardiac arrest arrest can increase their survival chances from 6 percent to say. 74 percent let's now talk to Dr Rachel James he's a consultant cardiologist and volunteer co-chair of the Sussex heart charity Rachel thank you for joining us on the program that is an astonishing difference isn't it and survival chances Absolutely and good afternoon and thanks to stop teaching to talk so we know that when a cardiac arrest happens that with any with every minute of not having treatment that the chance of survival reduces by 10 percent and it's really vital that if someone has a witness cardiac arrest that help is sought but in particular the thing that is going to be the real life saving. Action will be the automated external defibrillators A.E.D.'s you need any training to use them. And you can't do you harm by using on the the device which is actually what often puts people off if they want to do any harm I think I've been terrified That's it yeah you know if you see someone in difficulty having a heart attack or having a cardiac arrest and you beat you to be scared of making the situation worse do these differences come sort of within with instructions and information yes and. So often I mean there are various clips around on on the internet of things that when someone's had a witness arrest and the natural thing is no one does anything so don't be frightened. Check the patient is an rouse a boa she will be used to call a shaken a shout and it's ideal of someone charts and chest compressions you literally take the to place asked the cabinet and and zip it and turn it on open it up Turn it on and it will tell you what to do and you cannot it won't deliver a shock if it's not indicated and you can't harm anyone so how do you know how do you know if someone suddenly collapses then that it is a cardiac arrest the I suppose you did listen listen to their heart. What would you what would you do as a member of the public what we would advise you do is 1st of all check that you haven't put yourself in any danger and then. Check out that she get down and say Are you all right can you hear me and usually a gentle shake on the chest and if they don't do anything. Then they're effectively dead which is what we did is a cardiac arrest and that's when you call for help start the chest question someone get differ plater put the pads on it comes with some pads it tells you where to put them on it shows you and then you literally stand back and it will analyze the heart rhythm and it is it is a shock Burridge rhythm which the majority of color crest particularly on are that it would to live or just that the therapy would deliver a shock this is so astonishing isn't it the difference between life and death and now this will be over 50 stations in Sussex that that could potentially save an enormous amount of lives absolutely so the planned by the end of the year we will have installed over 70 so every station. In the county will have an 80 year to fib later and of course it's not just going to be there for all the busy times with people using the railways but also the railways are at the center of our towns and cities and therefore will be available to the communities around the local communities and of course very interesting and I suppose important for people listening to people like me to to learn basic 1st aid and sort of learn how to how to cope in emergencies because it could affect loved ones family or people strangers in a public place absolutely and today we were joined by Steve Morris who is a community resuscitation trainer and Steve life was saved by an 80 happen to be in the gym and collapsed and luckily someone knew what to do and he's there not only is he survived and is well but he's out there. Training people to in resuscitation and in the situation I'm only saying you don't need training for a pretty simple 80 but at least a minimizing people with. Oh thank you so much for joining us on the program really interesting project and very good to talk to you thank you Rachel thank you so much thank you Dr Wright for James consultant cardiologist and I volunteer co-chair of the Sussex heart charity do watch out our local stations in Sussex defibrillators will be available by the summer let's now catch up at 30 minutes to 6 with the latest headlines. Cup quarter final United versus Audi about a story this would be the result it would be Saturday on b.b.c. Sussex Well braving the elements to raise money for the y.m.c.a. To Sussex University graduates braving the cold tonight to sleep rough for the y.m.c.a. Karen Marshall and Alison Hall will join 110 participants a bass fake with just cardboard and sleeping bags to keep them warm. The friends message Sussex University there shared their reunion with other fundraisers taking part in the challenge Alison help joins me on the line now so Alison most people have a couple of reunion drinks nice meal in the warmth you're getting poised to wrap yourself in cardboard You know I'm a little bit worried to be honest I thought I'd be warmer Yes but you have actually picked one of the coldest weekends for this 70 I know I know I'm looking at the weather with dread but yeah there's a lot of people out there that do it quite a lot more nights of the year than myself probably quite like you why did you decide then to do this what I tried to do to this particular charity Well it's a local charity and obviously I left Brighton and Hove I guess but useless like a lot of other people I think walking past homeless people and kind of not quite knowing how to help so galvanized came a lot as I spotted on Facebook to start with and it's just the perfect charity to kind of get involved with a local level and kind of meet people who are vulnerable who might be street homeless in the past and to learn a bit more from them and their stories and kind of understand actually that sometimes the kind of thing that helps the most is to just to have a chat and kind of understand the kind of see them as humans really so I guess I just wanted to get involved and kind of help you much as I can really and there's a lot of people taking part I think 110 participants tonight yeah I don't know how we're going to fit in that. Sort of the or where keep one another were made and how likely how much you helping to raise is there a sort of target that you have I don't know I don't buy don't cover those as a whole they they raise 30000 pounds so far I think they're hoping for 50000 and that's to help the young people vulnerable who are vulnerable and then also the girls and I've brought home people as well so they're trying to raise as much friends as possible to going to support them you know. And helping people to you know find homes it's one of those things isn't it you think it's a good idea and then you do the reality of it the reality of sleeping out sleeping bags and and and card very much enables you to put yourself in the in the position of those who we sadly do you see who are homeless but quite a daunting prospect even to do it for one night yeah 12 hours were during the late which are which which year didn't seem like such a big deal back in January when I signed but as I was starting to pack my bags ready to go with a Coke at the side what's the worst thing in my wardrobe so where else to have to still face that conundrum but I doubt that they're very different why but you're catching up with it with a nod from from university as well so you laugh that you have a long way reminiscing you know Karen's very good friend so there's anyone I want to be homeless for a night with it probably be her. Night laughing. And how do people find out more or get involved in helping to raise funds or a Web site yes I'm glad you asked that if people visit those following web site y.m.c.a. Yelchin he got org forward slash sleep easy 80 and we're still looking for donations as much as possible as people can spare really but even a moral support being helpful but but yeah and any any donation to be exactly received well I'll be thinking of you good luck Ok thank you for joining us on the program this evening Alison help her be sleeping if you see people sleeping outside Bassett tonight over 110 participants who are helping to raise awareness and to raise money as well for the y.m.c.a. An incredible course that they're involved in their well let's now talk conservation on the South Downs this is the subject of this week's farming 5 minutes now heading off to call place farm in near Lewis in Sussex and we talk to Tom he's going to be telling us more about the importance of conservation Tom thanks for joining us on the program tonight. Hello. Tom hopefully joining us on the program in just a moment I see if we can find him Tom hello hello somewhat I was there I wonder yes we can hear you know that now tell us you're talking conservation tonight. I presume this is important for all farmers. It is very much what farmers and the countryside is as we benefit from having a lot we can charge as well as the general public who can come and walk in along the south and have a Enjoy the yeah just a lovely countryside. How did your farm get involved in conservation efforts. Well my father joined up originally in the mid eighty's so. Has to conclude environmentally sensitive areas so we bring on our farm and it seems about $87.00. And currently has grown to cooperate. More farmers are we are now part of the eastern South Downs farm a cluster which has $36.00 farm a searching from time to respond. And our aim is to pull together our land or such to create a bigger environmental. Factor but we can work with was rather than just our individual farms so we can provide greater habitat across a wider range rather than just let's say targeting just our songs that's an amazing initiative so it's a source of environmental economy of scale is new gold joining together to to make things work exactly is exactly that there's a couple more along the South Downs as well they're relatively new thing so we've only had been going about a year we're still very much in discussions of how we want to take this and what species do we want to really try and promote on the South Downs Bear Creek partridge or what take a touch down grass and flowers and butterflies. Because we believe that we've got to have a really really good national park as well as driving agriculture. Without driving agriculture it's hard to deliver the conservative conservative conservation issues that we we need to address on your farm particularly stands in some amazing wildlife every p.c. . We have are very lucky so of. It's I'm betting him so we overlook. Cavan to the north and south we look towards the sea for New Haven we look right along to to. Haven. So we were in a lovely spot regularly 2 hours p.p. Surveys we started in 2000 and 10 'd and lost almost in 2000 just in go another one this year and the species have risen. A lot we've gone from finding $23.00 species of birds on the farm when they did that particular survey up to $44.00 and they rate. Farmland bird species on the. Red and green scale green being the least sort of strengthened and red the worst most threatened so we've gone from having 4 great species on the farm up to about 8 . Which is great you're seeing an increase across the board we've gone from $23.00 up to $44.00 so. Take a species seen when they do this so it is paying off very much. And we were very happy with the results I don't know a lot of his comments and stay in the farm and I would imagine. That they very much appreciate this and some come specifically full the the wildlife from what they can say well later when we've got to step aside on the farms even come and stay and some people come to walk some people come to going to learn this but most people like to get a boat so some of the walk up and over the town say the along to Charleston farmhouse went. And they they love saying we've got and we have a lot of callus clips in the spring as well as all kids many kinds and but it it all comes about from how we manage the land so we we crazy with the right animals or the right times so the sheep are very good at creating everything down very low so if we if we put too many sheep on in the spring we take out all those wild flowers are trying to come through whereas if we stock it more lightly. They have a chance to corrupt through. Really interesting talking she Thank you so much for joining us on the program very good to talk to if you want to find out more about Cole place farm they do have a website find out more about the shepherd's hearts as well and look at the incredible area of p.t.
