Kinds of anniversaries 100th anniversary of the King's College Cambridge Silent Night was part of the 90 lessons and carols and also the 200th birthday of Silent Night thank you so much for listening to 5 Live I hope you have an a good Christmas I hope that we can provide you company throughout the start of Christmas morning and we're going to try and link up some Brits abroad with people in the U.K. As well and they can send messages to people there talking to Brits who are out of the country the moment starting with Liz Hennigan who is an Argentina Merry Christmas to you is. Christmas list maybe that's what where exactly are you. I am in Mendoza at the moment say that region Yeah I think it was a destination for Scotland in the 1978 World Cup I seem to remember I was taken into Argentina. And I'm currently on a 6 month trip around South America and how do you know how are they doing Christmas and they are in Argentina festive as a whole got for you well they celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Well actually a lot of empanada is lots of steak and lots of wine so we're just getting the barbecue fired up that meal to make an empanada they have a whole have a try and. So that's why I was thinking of Argentina obviously Turkey is what you normally in Christmas but they are the stakes are so wonderful Does anyone bother with Starkey in Argentina not to not know I've not seen in the shops or anything it's Thanks thanks thanks and then behind them but not as good an see even then yes fantastic and test. Are there any traditions there that we don't have here that you've noticed. Well I don't see so racing because the same is different. I doesn't seem like. As much air intake towards gift giving I haven't seen like. Something I think it's all about friends I'm a family it's a good wine I don't think it takes a place everything was life doesn't England have you heard last Christmas while you've been in Argentina I have not. Seen that so you'd still be alive in the game when I get in you when you go to try and avoid hearing it this is the way to win it is to go to Argentina apparently not brother to do that did he play this of songs that we would know when the radio band aid Jeff you had anything like that they've their own Christmas songs that I wanted. To play lots of them Christmas carols and kind of pheno in Cross Bay and Michael been playing but we haven't had any I haven't had any of the good ones you can tell from Joel and I don't know the Pogues you've just written off Michael bublé as not being one of the good ones but yeah I think a lot of people. Would agree with you like they are so his Christmas days the British Christmas day going to pan out for you then. So. I'm going to go up and make my traditional Christmas breakfast which is always a bit. Listen bubbles. Where I'm saying we have lots of Europeans and a few days so yeah it will be I think heading out for lunch somewhere I think somewhere it's highly unlikely we're going to try to recreate Jackie say yeah well I'm have to Argentinian sebaceous night and then we'll have. The rest of the world celebrations to work and how is it's been abroad it's Christmas if you haven't done this before. Yes Where I live since it's a strategy if the nearly 9 years so I've had many Christmases away from family. I think you just have to accept that it don't try and recreate what you what you normally have been just kind of enjoy the experience Elaine's and embrace the kind of local customs so before we say goodbye see the must be people in the U.K. You'd like to say Merry Christmas to. Yes Oh my one only let well. Have a very merry Christmas I love you with Danny and spending a lot what time with you. Lang You play a track as well you mention the words at the start Phillies Navidad for people who don't know that. It translates as Merry Christmas Happy Christmas. And I imagine this gets played a lot more in Argentina than last Christmas I was last here as the merry Christmas to you. As the choice of Liz and again who is in Argentina wishing her family Merry Christmas last week so no man has been. To nights on his duties for those of you little children this is your cue to go to bad they will probably be getting up you up in a few hours to see Father Christmas has been you may want to spare a thought for Reverend Chris line he's just been a midnight mass and will be delivering the Christmas Day saddest tomorrow and he has 3 children under 7 with another on the way is going to be a busy day in the line household Reverend Chris thank you for joining us you're the curate isn't James Gerrards Cross some food and talk us through the evening what happened I just did a wonderful evening where you had a I don't know for people to actually have somewhere around $250.00 for our last service which is actually still going on in the background I was. Even told to sit out fortunately part of the team and I wasn't directly involved in most of this so I was able to get out. We do to finish on the dot of midnight but we've overrun slightly So we're still going on you might hear the strain of all behold in just a few moments that used to annoy me when I went to watch nice services when the minister didn't acknowledge when it exactly became midnight he'd have said. You know we set your digital watch the exact time seen you in the I Will what's going on here Reverend Billy said to Lady Duffy tonight was he made him or did a knowledge that it was it was actually. Knowledge he actually has been acknowledged and we had a moment to say Happy Christmas to one another and thank you very much for speaking KNIGHT So what hymns did you go for with the classics. Mostly classics we had 19 a given given the night that this is we thought we ready had thought out as I said is going on now we've had a silent night we had a way in a manger. The classics and you've got to do the Christmas Day 7 all night long have you finished your salmon. I have just about as unusual for me actually to finish this they started on but yes I have. Done them wrapped up and ready to go to the printer said barring any principle to my morning I should be alright with all that you know without violence you could have removed aliments and been pressed to say alley or Archbishop of Canterbury but he and I What was that was the thrust of your salmon to morrow. Presages really you had to hear about the Christmas story which talking and particular about. Things a lot of our Christmas services around the greatest show connecting to the great showman and soaking about how Jesus called coming to be with us in person is the greatest show of love that the world has ever night and so that's kind of where I'm going with it tomorrow and talking about the different ways in which God coming and becoming one of us reveals the love that God has for each and every person will you be wearing a top hat later. Today Well I was desperate to wear my colleague a feature that I did. And you can change the lyrics the songs you know and I can. Actually always very much on board with always will survive. Maybe next year so 3 children under 7 you've got it's going to be a busy day absolutely yes absolutely Father Christmas is already being in our house so he came just before I left the same thing so that was that was great. And yes it is going to be a busy day will be up I would imagine 6 that he also and then and then we'll take it from there Will. He presents and stockings and then piles of presents under the tree mostly for Multiplex if he said which is a very generous relative and there will be icing on the face and then we've actually got a 9 o'clock service here which which again I'm not directly involved with but I will be here for probably the 2nd half of that to catch the members who are here to wish them a Merry Christmas because Larry slacker attitude to 7 says even if one cannot bring up halfway through the one of the noise for. 14 services between Sunday evening and a lunchtime say you know I think it will be although most of the ice. Did Father Christmas polish off any mince pies that were left for him with a little sherry when we actually we actually had a Christmas time to time before the Christmas this year break with tradition we don't have mince pies that kind of thing he was one for the Christmas fancy this year we decided that was what you have 4 times really are changing. Absolutely yeah we left we left in the option of beer water depending on how we felt that was thoughtful of our children which to go for. Life in the end. I think is lucky you only tell you the service once that you had to go through people want to go in here you preach to morrow where is it and what time. Say we we have a live. Sellers images are knowledge folks. Gerrards Cross and James are of course also an 8 o'clock service at our sister church in so much just down the race and then we all choose a more tenuous 11 o'clock service the last one preaching at 11 o'clock so we actually have one service in the church and one in our church will because we have only 70 people to call them all in. So we have shortened the services 11 o'clock at sea James Jones course everyone would like some people love to say that here absolutely reverent crystalline it with your great showman theme have a great Christmas day whilst Christmas Day No I keep saying sorry but it's Christmas Day or. Christmas present $100.00 joining us on Radio 5 Live Let's check in with another Bret's who's abroad for Christmas we're going to go to the Sunshine Coast in Australia and Andy Tweedle already Christmas Day where you are and a Merry Christmas. For where where you from and they. So I'm actually from Sussex just outside Brighton I moved to Sydney about 6 months ago and I'm up in the Sunshine Coast I was in Queensland with my with my good friends. Is in the straw in Christmas. Well. I'm actually I'm actually suspect but it's tough to take a break from that thing on the page and then going to go back and trying to shine on the bad day and having lots of lovely kind of fresh seafood Christmas away from Time. I've been very spoiled with my family trees and it's a part of the Christmas so I can't complain you've been welcomed and absolute a guy they've saved. The Union Jack and everything for me wow you can get out of home and take it normally exactly I might just be offending my family and getting drunk. Let's extra special this year the are there any family traditions the you have taken over Christmas Days or any boardgame you were trying to get them to play or show Rod some one thing was. That such a great question definitely will try and infiltrate them with some of our guys that we usually play we often play quite strange and very often play this thing called the candle like I'm well I don't have to go up to the Christmas tree and light a candle and inverted commas and then think of a car a country and the grape the latter that the country begins with and then we all have to try to get the country it's a it's a very mediocre boring game but for some reason I always get a priority. I'll maybe try once we've had a few. A few pairs I'll try and get a contingent try that with me I'm thinkin fire risk even if you be as you've got a candle and you're walking and it's not like it's not a real candle you pretend you like fake light the candle it's like you pretend to like the fairy light on the tree as if it were a castle. By the minute. It's hard for us from Reagan National but it's tradition that we have holiday like Christmas is about you know is that you get your tradition now to do them you don't quite know why you're doing them absolutely yeah that's the whole point yeah maybe get to that we were asking Liz in Argentina what music she's been hearing when you're in Britain there are certain songs you cannot get away from she said she went the whole month of December with hearing last Christmas by why have you managed to do that. Unfortunately I haven't they've got pretty much all the same Christmas songs that we have ever in Australia they've got a version a slightly play version of profiles that I shop. But I think the weird thing actually is just hearing Christmas I told because it's so hot and sunny and sticky and then you go into the supermarket and had all I want for Christmas is here and it just feels so strange and bizarre. It doesn't really feel like Christmas. Happy to be hearing Lavandero and all of the great you want to stroll in saying Christmas caused each other didn't have snow on them yeah yeah and they have. I went to live near a park and they had a little sort of Christmas. And they had all these with like fake snow coming off them so they face that they buy into the whole cold winter snow thing. 38 degrees wonder why they do that. Tonight the. Influence of the West. I'm not sure but I guess that the whole sort of. Symbolism of Christmas is all around you know getting cozy and the winter time and all that stuff but I think. It's quite pretty maybe they've been inspired by but I'm not sure I'm suddenly thinking I'm surprised that Kylie has never released a Christmas album and she did do some debate didn't she I think I could be like. Him I have released a Christmas album right I'm not sure maybe maybe maybe it didn't it wasn't a huge mass but yes you definitely did Santa baby and I seem to remember her during Baby it's cold outside to someone but I can remember yeah it's not she's prime from a candidate for any day now any day now I think of the whole thing especially for you being quite a Christmassy song. Interesting so before you go we should let you throw back to the U.K. Anyone you want to say hello to say Merry Christmas A Well I would say a big big America's For all of my family down and hey with. My mom and my sister Sarah and her husband Matt have a sister Charlotte and my Aunt Caroline and my papa and also I say a big merry Christmas to all of my friends and the Mrs I. Think how are you doing being away are you missing people. I think about my 1st Christmas away it doesn't it doesn't go it's just such a sort of novelty and a treat. But because it's so warm I just it just feels like kind of a summit day rather than Christmas so I guess I say I've already Face Time time I'm going to take time I think I might I didn't everybody. Enjoying doing that I might have. And I was wrong Kylie's done a Christmas album you're saying. Down there. I don't know how I could forget this and they're looking at all but apparently the lead single from the album was a hunk was with James Corden solo thank you very much. So yes from a straight away as well we're getting a lot of requests coming in with play more music than we normally do in 5 live you can get away with it it's Christmassy the boss is probably on listening to your Christmas songs this morning 85 o 5 is the text number and we had requests from songs for the 12 Days of Christmas by Frank Kelly's one of the favorites of our producer a drain so he says we're going to play here we go this is Frank Kelly The 12 Days of Christmas. Every Christmas to you is Christmas day you're with column Patterson on 5 live thank you very much for choosing to spend your Christmas Day with us good talking about. Something as a Christmas tradition from Mary Poppins it was on B.B.C. One tonight I'm sure many if you watch the ads but after the original 54 years ago the sequel to Mary Poppins had its primary a London. This month because we know many a few will be going to see over Christmas we thought we'd go back to that nights and rerun the interviews when I spoke to the cast no Julie Andrews this time starts off by hearing from Emily Blunt who plays the world's most famous now the I went down for the London film premiere and spoke to her and the other cast members. Who came back. To read me one day as a woman's age. Barely Poppins. Taking on. I mean a lot. It would be rejecting you know this new version of Mary Poppins but I'm happy people are embracing the next chapter you know Julie Andrews kind of conversations that you had with Mark she was offered a cameo I have not spoken to Julie I would love to talk to today and she has just seen the film so I think we will happen soon. No but we'll see but she wrote the most beautiful email OK what did she say I'm going to tell you positive though wonderfully. Beautiful beautiful went on and on about how much she loves this very special. Yet. You were. On this harness. You know it was very high it was like 60 feet in the air so I think I thought I was all right with heights until I was up there and then I realized I maybe wasn't as good at heights as I thought. One of the beautiful things for you is you have 2 young daughters yes they see and yet most of their review my oldest to us is seen and she just was found by she absolutely loved it wants to talk about it all the time which is really special and quite surreal for me but how does she deal with having Mary Poppins as a mom would think it's just her normal you know when we don't make a big thing of it so I think she just thinks well that's what Mommy does and that's what my mommy does you know so I don't think she thinks anything of it really does she ever get you to do any of some lines yeah she gets me to do the voice sometimes she likes it when I speak to the Dolphin is a new note she really likes that. No not yet as you quite disappointed both of my daughters in white. On. Top some. Length to splash. That I'm sorry I will now just be a disappointment in general I'm finally. Well you would hope she'd come in and bring a basic chaos you know I think she's probably quite good at that. To . Stick. Around so please Jack. Obvious how much you love musicals having the man who created Hamilton one of Mary Poppins mean to you growing up oh I spent many hours with Mary Poppins dancing with Dick Van Dyke in the Penguins it was just a one sided relationship as I watched the V.H.S. In my home so it was amazing to get to be a part of this film will be the part you would play when you're in your living room . Penguin number 5 if. You are getting to start a film with Dick Van Dyke who is back when. You finish your shot. That's the. First Brad. What was it like to be on set with him has more energy at 92 years of age than I have ever had in my life I'm not in under. That person is that is really saying something and he's human caffeine and he's got a magical glint in his I don't think there's an entertainer on earth that is more in touch with their inner child and that's why these movies are magic and he's not even the oldest person in the film Angela Lyons prays 93 nights. Depending. I know and you know we start cheering before we even see her we actually hear her voice before we see it in this movie and it's it's such a treat and finally I believe when you used to watch it as a kid you couldn't get beyond feet the birds would rank you why because it's sad man even though. It's one of the most haunting in beautiful melodies is I think is rather famously Walt Disney's favorite melody he would have the Sherman Brothers played for him at the end of a long day of work and it just wrecked my tiny little heart but will this film do the same to a new generation of kids I think so I think it will I think it will make them cry and I think it will make them laugh and I think I think kids of all ages are going to enjoy it Meryl Streep you play Topsy-Turvy Mary Poppins. Can I be nice that is MY I'M LISTENING TO MAKE you know and you're reunited with Emily Blunt of course worked for you in The Devil Wears Prada I can see you know she's all over me now I love I love Emily and I don't know anybody who could have done this other than Emily Blunt the way that she. Imagination and wit. And real tenderness as an actress and her singing to supply man. I think she's magic and she and Lynn man mountain amazing chemistry. As a couple I thought it was just great that you never had dreams to be the parts of mayor. Call this in your career Oh no no I never imagined that because to me Julie Andrews was or was Mary probabilistic black and then I realize that these books we learned so much about the L. Travers and to realize that she had so many other stories about me and Hopkins and this is sort of the outgrowth of of all of that this is a time when we really need Mary because a with a woman to sort this out don't we that was a fun place to reason makes you play Margaret such stuff it was just wonderful to see 16 seats and Washoe who plays my co-host Mary Poppins how much that means to you growing up in men in the world to me growing up it was the 1st film I have a saw and I absolutely adored it I couldn't get enough of it so I can't really believe that I'm in this sequel it's it's so strange if you just 1st though you have a song the 1st I love you know this is the 1st one in my childhood memory that I was besotted with and you are Michael who was of course Michael do we boys in the 1st one told us rooms were always fun. Explanation. Since he went to that game 6 Degrees of Separation read when people's movie careers by people that costarred went out that game alone now you have nailed this not Angela Lansbury Dick Van Dyke Mel street yeah by going pretty fun in that what was it like on the set for those people that were just amazing because you know them so well and you know them from your childhood so they're right deep inside your consciousness somehow and to see them doing their work was just just a privilege and the 1st film left people with so many new words and catchphrases one of the things that people are going to take away from this one well I hope like a real emotion you know like delight and joy simple things in a. Things that we forget. Treasure maps. The. Marshall direct So when you're doing Mary Poppins retards you want to be a tribute to the original and how much it's on film but I think it's a real balancing act because you have to do a little of both because you are following in that footsteps and you don't fall extraordinary fellow at the same time you want to create and we were very determined to create a new story with an entire new score and original musical and so it was really making sure that each were served in a very sort of clear way thing in the series because the use of the resource. Possibly that nature why was Emily Blunt you're married because she's such a great actress she can do anything I mean this woman can play the very strict and certain proper nanny that we all know but underneath that there's a real human beating heart plus she sings and dances and she's British So she sort of says everything finally 54 years from the 1st and 2nd film Another 54 years before the 3rd Well let's hope not I mean I will say there's a lot of material there I mean there are 8 books and we're able to work from those books and find some wonderful episodes and adventurism characters so there could be another Let's see how the world responds let's wait see how they all see fellow Yeah they will tell us that's for sure take to the streets. Mary Poppins returns the stars a Mary Poppins returns on Christmas Day on 5 Live The film opened last Friday if you want to hear what made off they go to the M A O Movie Show podcast he likes it though and actually say Wellstone 5 live on Christmas Day 7 o'clock. Is Greg Lake for Michelle. I'm proud not long now 30 minutes left in the program so always 085909613 Tell me what songs he'd like for a final montage of slightly unusual Christmas songs was one of the big things off the has been the great showman huge huge film a cinemas this year when it opened actually then the last year hardly got any business in the 1st week and it spread by word of mouth the critics panned its people when saw it and loved it told their friends to see and it builds and it builds and the build the box office increased week after week the album has been number one the soundtrack has been number one for 23 weeks this year almost half the year the greatest showman has dominated has been such a huge part of so many people's years we thought we would let you hear my interview with Hugh Jackman about it he is actually announced that he is going on Arenas who are of the U.K. Playing songs from the greatest showman and I managed to ask him about this and he revealed he's thinking there will be a sequel to the greatest showman so here is Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman Why have you decided having just turned 52 in 1st world tour not any old tour and it's way better to do a 50 even 60 that is my philosophy. Is very much about the front line of my life as I get to get on to the back 9 of my life that I'm but it's been 23 years since I've been on stage in England and I mean really looking forward for some reason to go back and and I'm just thrilled to do this as you know I've been working on the 7 or 8 years and I just gave up on being at a very excited to be that one. There's a huge Ottoman life show it's very self-indulgent on info my favorite song stories about me. And I mean actually that's not too far from the truth I'm trying to I kind of open up in a way to show sides of myself people may not know about it it's got music from things I've been in things I've wanted to be in that I didn't get constant and then you know I Cornish time and Les Miserables and then when you cast and that you want to get cast and. Oh my God there's a lot going to be in politics for me to say. I really want to be a moderate hardish and for that one. I want to be in. Chicago was one maybe. It's not a revenge show I don't like on. To what extent has it been possible to do this world so far because of the success of The Great to show. I mean I do an arena tour in a strike here and I have probably a little more obviously History Day. But it was only after the greatest Shaiman and no sort of wild sort of success of it did my agent kind of say I think you are in the world now part of that like Senator idea but you know I think blame is very very popular to any one time and I don't think she. Is not looking to see. These 3 day all I need. To Luckily having worked on this show for a long time but I want to expected this success to garnish I'm in and we're going to sing a bunch of songs from the from the show at the concert. It has been such a phenomenon 21 weeks it's been a number one of the U.K. Albums charts you know what's your theory about why so there's a saying in musicals that musicals work because of the book or the story that people love them because of the music and from the moment I was hearing these songs it just I loved them I could play them for my daughter for my mom everybody loved them on the 1st listen to you know and that's really hard with music and we spent 7 or eighty's writing on the songs and I think the lyrics really speak to the things that we're all feeling right now which is be true to yourself follow your own PAF that meet the needs of all about just be self and dream big and in a way we really it sounds like a convenient segue but that's kind of what this show is this is maybe actually the show This Is Who I Am This is the music I love and where do you know me from all over Reno of the greatest show I'm gonna lay me is you're probably going to say it's hard to me that you haven't seen before is there any chance of a sequel to the greatest showman it's a really interesting question because I'm not sure right now. I you know we don't have a situation in the business where the company that did it means all the time even though there's a lot of moving plates right now spinning blades but you know I'm not sure what that would do but it did take us a while to get the 1st one up and I it's not to be underestimated how difficult it is to get a musical up and going but it's clear to me you know every on the people of these characters and a lot of love stories that are nice for that of general way around are saying possibly but I'm not children might be involved in science like but I love this movie and I love this character and it was one of the great joys of my life and honestly there was a period where we'll enjoy how it was going to go. And then it became sort of caught fire and a lot of that has to do with thank God to the U.K. . That's really where that movie 1st really took off I think to everyone who was there the fans of it but I absolutely love it if I can you an opportunity came up where it felt like there I tend to do than the topic of. Touched on it then it got off to such a terrible start the price so much I mean the disabuse what you're emotionally diluted to the New Yorker and a shrill blast of nothing but when stoned and the 1st weekend was poor How worried were you at that point yeah I was worried I mean I was worried I'm one level because I've been around the business to know that when you don't get any e-mails not even a consolation sort of a mile then things are bad but we really are I'm a lover of underdog stories completely dismiss the itself and the story upon themselves as very much an underdog people didn't believe in him and he had ideas and dreams and and the movie weirdly that that the treachery of the movie itself matches the actual story that is in the movie I've never been part of anything like it I'm not sure if I ever will be part of anything like it again it may not be very long but I can tell you just from going around the Straits of all the movies I've done the people who love this movie who love it they really love it and I see it over and over again. Critics not mattering and that I think that matter I mean I met in May I think. I mean I think there's certain elements today of the movie going business who don't greet the New York Times or The God in the. Rolling sun whatever it is but I think what's more important what's more immediate is what your friends say you know because they used to be when I began in this business you would have a whole weekend where you'll move you could perform before anyone got to work on Monday or to school on Monday instead of talking about it so you had ideas weekend where Vaughn would go. That night or that no longer happens by like noon on a Friday people have gone there on social media so it's ultimately been fantastic to the movie business I think I mean it's terrifying if you're in marketing up a bit that business has been fantastic because the movie has to connect with audiences the movies have to be good people have to love it because if I don't love it they're going to tell every single person then I. Do even know how to cue me going to cut you. See if that works. I will be reflected in the show but. I do believe his stories about how that all came about and I My life has been this bizarre mix of different things it's sometimes even confusing for me how they all kind of fit together and there is no. Cap or chorus of singing dance line with Wolverine's It's not like total range doing kick lines don't worry about that call to tell a few stories that nobody knows about. How I got the pot and how you know that period of my life when I'm finally your next film you play a politician Gary Hart in the front runner. You're a hard man to beat if we hold ourselves to those highest standards in the bonus K'naan to want to. Yes interesting time in politics here in the U.K. The big breaks that debate is happening at the moment have you been following us has. Been hearing a little bit some days to. Everything and just it's a very confusing time not just I mean just trying to change every prime minister I think 7th and obviously everything in America if you will story on recognizable when if you are nor anyone like me you wake up you look at what we get is. A really interesting look at. In American politics and actually it is you know really how we got to where we are. Obvious you Jackman's to bring you that because you know the greatest showman has been such a huge part of so many people's lives and 2018 the critics hated it the public said they loved it and it's been huge cinema and huge in the charts just time to get a couple more songs and we've been asking you for your Christmas songs rose in Aberdeen as requested by Joni Mitchell.
