Peacock keeping her seat if she is 3 many people have told me they feel ignored forgotten and abandoned rest assured I've heard you go it is not a good night my party the Labor Party was formed to fight the working people and I would like to everything like how to make sure it returns to doing just that in don't cast a central Rosie Winterton a Labor hold board again with much fewer votes the last time around this is a sad night for Labor. I want the other candidates for. A clean campaign free from personal attacks but it is a sad night for the Labor Party and as. We must reflect on that will that is Ed Miliband Doncaster North another Labor hold for the former Labor leader but again a reduced majority and Ed Miliband mention the terrible result for the party nationally might call for with the people of my constituency and this country as a whole desperately need in my view a Labor government they need a limited number of March today and so you do yes the. Task is over the next 5 years to get the government. And to fight for them in the meantime another one I will do back in Sheffield Jill furnace has been reelected for Labor in bright side and Hillsborough and looking forward to working hard for the right side of history for another so I want to do everything I can say and build on the trust that has been placed upon me Labour's Paul Blomfield shadow Briggs it Minister keeping his seat for Sheffield central Lee Rowley keeps North establish a fall the conservatives with an increased majority I don't know anybody on the doorsteps has really enjoyed this campaign I think including so including the candidates and you know it's always been a privilege to talk to residents to go out there to debate the issues but it has been a difficult campaign both nationally and I hope now with what looks to be a good majority for the Conservative Party and a good endorsement locally that we can go we can actually sort out some of those national issues and get moving on some of those local issues so I'm raring to go and looking forward starting again soon or leave a conservative hold and finally a Labor hold for John Healey in went with and so only bowl sober with Denis Skinner at risk potentially for labor and Sheffield Hallam left to declare a recount currently going on for Sheffield Hallam b.b.c. Radio Sheffield news at 6 minutes past 5 Steve thank you very much Becky Walker we'll hear from Peggy again in the next 30 minutes or so Good morning good to have you with us and taking you through till 6 o'clock this morning when of course Toby is here with the election reaction breakfast between 6 and 10 so 16 of 18 constituencies across South Yorkshire and North Darbyshire have to close so far I think it was fair to say you know the exit poll at 10 o'clock suggested that a few might turn blue but actually we've now got 5 conservative seats across South Yorkshire and north of 4 of them taken from labor Let's go to the us in just a 2nd but the breaking news this morning is the conservatives are set to win an. Overall majority of 86 that's the breaking news this morning on b.b.c. Radio Sheffield we'll get more reaction to that in just a moment from Professor muffling this who's the professor politics you know Steve Scheffler spent the night with his in the studio But 1st over to the let's find out what's going on with regard to the Sheffield Hallam seat still today club because recounting our political reporter Liz Roberts is there for us morning less voiding we are gathered around the podium we believe the final c.h.f. Is about to be announced here yes we're just waiting for the candidates to get together I understand it's been pretty close between the 3 parties Conservative Labor and the Liberal Democrats. Ok I think you might just say although there's a candidate missing so most people are standing around waiting. For his missing I can see that's all we can do I can see the live. My. Life the missing actually live son of a living I can see her walking across the floor now so. You know be an interesting one to find out what. I mean I think the entire night it's been absolutely fascinating hasn't it and this has gone to a recount this particular seat which I can only imagine means there's only a few 100 votes in it between which 2 parties or which 3 parties I'm not entirely sure none of us are anyway all the candidates here they are making their way on to the podium. And we are about to get the final result not before time I have to say that although a little sooner than I was warned. To get is going to be about Office 5 so I'm quite glad it's not just briefly the conservatives now say that they have enough seats for them to declare that they have won an overall majority. So Ok let's see if they want to get another one. You. Know. To do this you're. Going. To leave your friends. To be your friends. All. Night. Was the Sheffield Hallam constituency we. Know. That. You don't like the way things. Turned out great to. Talk. To a. Republican one. Which . My very. Very good. Woman. The future. Holds for. 6 months. So that the insurance will. Know you're going. To the right. It. Is a lady but told how Len and I have to say it was an old school and most people expected his live like. An Ok thing to. Come in. But we'll see and then I'm just like I'm not hungry and. We haven't had enough already. And on the next account to. Another really. Feel good enough. For you. You. Know. We'll see how I'm going to. Put. On this. Really really. Shine on. This coming never been. Good enough to. Eat normal. I'm. Not. Fully paid yet. Because of that. He should feel now down to the street. To come out of the. Old 3 year. Old Red. Really. Very low. On the good. News she's not God. And not government and I. Never heard. You. Say. I'm sorry I'm. Just. Going to have to say that as a surprise result I am but a try and grab a quick word with Olivia straight away can I yes I'm live on radio. Olivia Congratulations not a new job I do have a new job very exciting and yeah I'm really proud to have one the see we've been working really tirelessly for days and days and days and months and months and rebuild trust with people you know I've been pounding the streets and lots of volunteers trying to just reconnect with community and to be honest it's really worked and we've had such a fabulous campaign and I just want to thank every everyone who was involved in our campaign locally for the months and. It's quite a surprise I have to say because most people were expecting this to go the way for the Lib Dems Yes I mean I stood for the seat because I thought I could win it. I wanted to make sure that Labor's message of hope was getting across to people and I think we did that really successfully and people wanted to see change in Sheffield and you know I represent now a constituent say that has the lowest rate of child poverty but the people in this community of people with great amounts of compassion and they want to see change you know at a time when we've seen 100000 people die as a result of. Starting but if it changes this is this is really what people want to see change they want to see public services rebuilt climate crisis tackled and you know also the chaos that we're in as well so you know I think that we just stood on a platform of hope and just car message across to people and rebuild trust you talked about some of the bigger issues not to mention some of the very local issues in Holland they've had a difficult time with their previous Labor than independent and there's been some very poor representation so quite remarkable they put their faith in the Labor Party again and given given what happened after the last election Well you know I've been out talking to thousands of people and I think people know how hard I've been working and come today and they're know that they can put their trust in me to be there and pay you know I won't comment on. The past and pay and I just think that you know it wouldn't be fair for me to do that but I do think that we need to continue to rebuild trust and I will be working as hard as possible to make sure people know what Labor representative could be in for and that is about fighting tooth and nail for the people of this community and I'm I mean the got a fair amount of casework to pick up on almost straight to work well as a counselor for 6 years I'm quite used to say you know I think that this is definitely something I would be setting my office up as soon as I possibly can and speaking of your role as a counselor will will that Billy end of that no. I will have to say. Anyway so I think. Anyway thank you b.b.c. . Thank you live if you like it's Ok to be I think perhaps relatively surprised herself because most people were expecting this seat to go to the Lib Dems and I think it's just it just goes to show what a poor evening the Lib Dems are having the candidate Hello Gordon has been. In place for the last 2 and a half years working you know working is self I would say and I think most people in the constituency know that so you know but it hasn't been enough the Lib Dems have not done enough to retake Sheffield Hallam and I think they're going to be bitterly disappointed by that all right thanks very much less you can combine Now can't you get back from. The Sheffield political reporter Liz Roberts thank you Liz and obviously waiting for that final declaration following the recount because it was so close to Sheffield Hallam constituency but it's being held I use that term loosely because obviously it was labor and then when independent. Basically it's it's a Labor seat leave your Blake bagging that for Sheffield Hallam the final constituency to declare was the constituency and it looks like the only skin is going to get an early retirement because he's out of a job Mark's lecture for the Conservatives has taken that seat so bold sober house gone blue and the breaking news this morning is that the conservatives have won the general election with that overall majority they've passed the 3 $126.00 seat threshold with seats still to declare So yes we will we will I'm sure reflect the overall results but 1st let's talk more about the service situation professor at Flinders Professor of Politics at the University of Sheffield It was as time went on It was becoming more and more written in stone wasn't it was if it wasn't written in stone then it was definitely sort of sprayed on by the time the longer it got the harder it was going to look for Dennis going to hold on and in the end you know he got 16 and a half 1000 votes but the conservative Mark fresh has come in with nearly 22000 so you know a fairly what would have been in the past the firmly confident majority has again it was it was no doubt monger near good enough and now we have. I mean it's amazing Bolsover has a conservative m.p. a Year and it's not the only one as we've touched if you're just joining us this morning good morning with the it's all 6 o'clock this morning. South Yorkshire north midlands our patch really we had there have 6 conservative constituencies 5 of them taken from labor those those 5 include of course but also over that we just mentioned Palestinian stocks bridges gone conservative Valley Nick Fletcher for the Conservatives has taken that Alex Stafford for the rather Valley has turned that blue and Brendon Clarke Smith for the Conservatives has taken bass at law as well the Rowley held for the conservatives in ne Darbyshire all the others are labor there are no lib wins in our neck of the woods in $29000.00 of the conservatives have won an overall majority at the general election and it looks like Boris Johnson will be celebrating right now it does and what's really interesting is that when some would definitely not be celebrating and germy Corbin Well gosh he'll be thinking. Where do I go what do I do so I mean it's been it's been a an evening of great success if you. Boris it's been a night of unexpected lows low low low for the Labor and the Lib Dems if you are just joining us I just don't know if you're aware but Jo Swinson lost her seat up in Scotland last seat to the s.n.p. Says she's out of the job in the Lib Dems are looking for a new leader and Joe Swinton she lost her seat by 132 votes right fine it's that fine but I'm afraid you know if it's one vote that's it. It's baby c. Radio Sheffield your reaction this morning you're waking up to a mixed patchwork of blue and red across South Yorkshire North option or not I'm sure and slightly further afield that we could to get your reaction to it all 813 double 3 start a text with the word Sheffield place you can call us as well on our 800 travel 14949 Give us your thoughts about that let's turn our attention to Chesterfield for a 2nd because our reporter in Chesterfield Rob Rose was speaking to the person who held the Labor seat there Tony Perkins 1st things 1st Toby congratulations on retaining you see here in Chesterfield tell us how you're feeling well obviously very mixed feelings you know it's been a catastrophic night for the Labor Party across the country but in that context I'm delighted that we got in reasonably comfortable and much closer a small majority than previously been us. Able to sneak over the line and really grateful to everyone who voted for me. Speech I recognize many of those who voted for me did average of oceans you know and that's a real clarion call of warning for the Labor Party how do you feel emotional that you scrape through your I mean I think. You know obviously. It's been a very tough 6 weeks. The minute the action was called or knew the circumstances in which it was being called were going to make it very tough for us to. Hold on to the sea and no illusions about what people in Chesterfield felt there was a real desire for BRICs it to be finished for the referendum to be delivered upon. Was attempting to make the argument that we might well find that we leave European Union and then spend many years negotiate in the basis on which we are actually in terms of future trade deals and you know it might not actually be the way that Boris Johnson had said it but nonetheless I accept that people are Chesterfield many of them you know wanted to get the BRICs issue dealt with and many of them were willing to vote with me despite disagreeing with me on that policy so I am grateful to people who start with me and I think is my promise to them with all I can to make sure that they have a Labor Party they feel they can put their trust in the future and he gave a very heartfelt speech on stage just after it was announced that you'd won you get lots of reservations about Jamie Corbin What's the 1st thing in a day when you get back into parliament you think times of him I mean I think it's pretty clear that Jeremy Corbin is going to have to go but I think you know it's not just about one person you know the problems the Labor Party has run far deeper than that is about the people that surround him but it's also about the extent to which the Labor Party had an agenda didn't have credibility as a said previously I believe many of the individual policies we had were on their own had the potential to be popular but there was such a shopping list of stuff and there was a real lack of credibility about some of the people that we were pushing forward and I think there was too much of a sense that the kind of civil war inside the party was more important to some of the leadership than actually getting the keys to Downing Street and that's on forgivable when there are people out there who desperately want. And finally what do you look forward to continuing to deliver for the people of Chesterfield Well I think you know we have a real need to get further investment. In our constituency would be in promised by . The Tory government that austerity is over so you know we're going to be making them live up to that promise now we want to see public sector workers and public servants services properly funded and I'll be absolutely campaigning for that but there's also a real job of work for us to do in the Labor Party to make sure that we're in a position to be attractive to population not just adjustable but the whole country the next time because you know you can have a country that has an opposition this far behind it's not good for democracy and find anything you want to say to the people who voted for you well just you know massive. Massive thanks to everyone who voted for me particularly those who stuck with me despite the reservations that we had about the party because you know quite simply without them I would have been a goner Toby Perkins thank you very much Peter you can celebrate with your friends and family properly now and well done congratulations There we go just heard there from Toby Perkins the m.p. For Chesterfield has retained his seat here since 2010 he's been elected again in this election yeah thanks very much Rob talking to our. Chesterfield m.p. Tony Perkins he's retained it for Labor at the Queen's Park Sports and. Let's just return to Professor Flinders here professor of politics University of Sheffield has been with the since the the wee small hours of the morning still looking remarkably fresh believe it or not I was in here before the poll even went the exit poll the error was very impressed very impressed. So let's just talk about the. Headlines really here I mean would you class this as a landslide I mean the concept is basically if you're just joining us they've won the general election they've got an overall majority that passed. The 326 threshold with seats still to declare the b.b.c. Forecasts that Boris Johnson were tense Downing Street with a majority of 74 what you make of it not a landslide but it is a seismic shift landslides are usually more related to numerics the number of seats you win a new no massive majorities What's different about this is it's a seismic shift because the nature of the additional seats at the conservatives have moved into basically the conservatives have have moved their whole center of gravity into a section of society that traditionally they've not ever had any real relationship with I mean it's almost like you know the Deep South in America decide it's only 2 to go for the Republicans it's traditional left wing voters who often historically very critical of the Conservative Party if what they did to British industry in the seventy's eighty's ninety's and now those people are voting in fact what's happened is the whole party system is flipped we've got a conservative party now heavily dependent on working class votes we're going to Labor Party increasingly dependent on the middle class votes I'm just wondering whether this can be related to a Thatcher win in the eighty's or not. I think this. I think in many ways there is something of the 1979 Mode moment because that's who was coming in as very much a reformist prime minister who wonder stood that the Conservative party need to needed to reach out to a broader audience and she did that through the whole right to buying council houses element of the privatized Asian trying to give people a stake in society but very economic level what you have is a is a very different strategy now which is about trying to connect with many people that just simply feel disillusioned and disaffected and obviously we'll talk about the brakes situation in the next 30 minutes we're going to be talking about the Lib Dems and Labor Where on earth did it all go wrong for them soon as well but if you are joining us this morning at 5 seats in our neck of the woods taken from labor 6 are blue in total including that northeast obviously which was held by Lee Rowley for the conservatives all the other seats in our neck of the woods remain red for labor no live demo parents whatsoever we mentioned Laura Gordon for the Lib Dems in Sheffield he's been working very hard to just come to fruition for No I mean th
