Radio Scotland news thank you Sarah and welcome to Saturday mornings of b.b.c. Radio Scotland with me and Johnny am I guess this morning our Herald columnist Allison wrote to journalist Peter Ross and Martin Geissler of i.t.v. News good morning to you all morning here in NY This week we're going to talk about troubles in the skies for Ryanair trees a maze bricks that speech noisy restaurants are returned to Wroclaw And what if the power at the police rather had the power to retire thoughts let's have a listen to some of the week's big moments. We may be leaving the European Union but we are not leaving you are this is our message when we make a mess in right here we come out with a house of money of the run up high let's do not say 6 Army contract there has to be a fundamental change in how long I deal with its pilots that I've been accustomed. To that my life is horrible. This is not him actually coming to I was sick stealing food from other kids packed lunch boxes just to get by because only being fed properly. And all that and more to come here to be serious got let me share the 9 Johnny and you can join the conversation online throughout the program. Using the hash tag Shereen But 1st trouble for Ryanair this week is it announced it was canceling 40 to 50 flights a day for the next 6 weeks due to a backlog of staff leave up 240-0000 passengers are affected with reports of people being left stranded the company claimed the measure was designed to improve punctuality which had fallen below 80 percent at a press conference boss Michael Levy was unusually contrite This is our mess up when we make a mess in Ryanair we come out with our hands up we try to explain why we made the mess and if we when we would pay compensation to those passengers who would take the compensation but that torn change that the company's a.g.m. In response to a threat of industrial action from pilots will lead to accuse them of being precious about themselves and full of their own self-importance adding their job is not difficult going on to say that he could force them to defer their time off while Evan Cullen is president of the Irish Airline Pilots Association money of the reiner pilots do not have a fixed term contract what they have is precarious employment pilots are grouped into Irish companies those companies then subcontract into a u.k. Provider of pilots and then provider provides the pilot labor into Ryanair there has to be a form of mental change in how Reiner deals with its pilots letter from pilots or I near warned Michael Ealy over there cheap men pay and conditions and stated that they're prepared to work to rule over these issues and Alison right you've got a flight booked here you're a bit what about it yeah unfortunately it was the day after I had a couple weeks ago and then the news broke and I had that you know 3 Holy Days thrill of clicking through to find out where the my trip was still or when fortunately is bar I don't find that real issues being you know such as the sort of misuse of kilos the Seems to be about the company that I'll be you know intent. Until I actually get in the ear and then get home again what did you say that was a long press conference that Michael O'Leary gave sort of explaining the compensation and all the rest of it what do you think of the way he's handled this well nowhere I mean the big big story about Ryanair before this one was how much they would have changed you know they were now they had listened to completely there were no going to be no more passenger friendly they were going to you know change and you know board this the things the other day lines do but no this is back to square one you know passengers seem to be being treated with contempt Peter you know I mean I think you handled it very badly I mean it's supposed to be a new field 0 and I think what you're seeing is can a new principles management style essentially I think you know the the actual mystique that was meat was so course all such causal cockup that we want from a boss and that situation is considerable public contrition and what would you have had to do I would have had them apologize much more sincere than I think he has done and be much less aggressive in this kind of washing and I think it's I think it's in his nature to I do think it's in the nature to go to feign the kind of appropriate Can the humility and seriousness and a moment of crisis and he's an aggressive you know destructive force of a boss that's why he's been so successful as a businessman as you know Dr don't know why it's successful as an airline as well because he makes no bones about the fact that it's North Wales and it's you know it's cheap Yeah I think that you know his personality is behind successful business model but we're know in a moment of tracers and I don't think it's quite working for him I'm not sure that their moral crisis will last I think you continue to be very successful and I think and this particular moment has approach is not really so helpful I disagree I've got quite a fashionable opinion of Michael is a bit of a guilty pleasure I shouldn't like him he stands for everything I normally dislike and a chief executive of a company treats his passengers with disdain there are some fairly questionable working practices. Going on but he does what he says on the turn and I'm so fed up with smarmy slimy C.E.O.'s and he's the opposite he's a brace of he's robust and why wouldn't of wanted him to do in that press conference actually is kind of make some for apology that's what we're used to that's what we're conditioned to expect now he came out and said Yeah right well whatever you know we cocked up but so what deal with you expect him not to cock up in the 1st know of it by his own admission he said last week this is my biggest cock up I have a litany of cock ups at Ronnie over the past 25 years and I think you know it's quite refreshing that somebody does that and you get what you pay for it's the runners of the skies Ryanair is cheap it's no frills it doesn't really care about customer relations all that much but you know if you can fly to New York or for 850 you're going to do it and you know if you're going to do it anyway absolutely he'll tailor those fears because if you go want to go to New York or a week if you want to book that for a week before you go because you 250 quid is 6 months before you get a bargain and we always go for bargains and he knows and you know what that's just how we live you know is that just the price that we're paying for for cheap airfare travel that somebody is I think it was writing this week that you know we've created this vicious cycle where if you you want cheap travel or cheap anything you accept that somebody else is going to get exploited along the way yeah well it's not so much the new photos that gets me it's the new gate in there you know the. Whole the decline but if you can actually get there then it doesn't matter how cheap it is. Your choice you don't have to go right now there are plenty of aerial lines out there and you know who's being exploited on the way but sometimes you have to go it's leaving it wasn't for somebody else in you have to be there for a certain time and a new veins you know you don't actually not have to buy degrees Ryanair because the cheapness is where they fly to but it's their right to choose the type of business model they want to operate. And if you want to buy into the business model and give them your fair then finally they don't have to they don't have to work to suit the customer they work to suit themselves I mean do you think that there have been Coles I think there's a petition on the end. Next for a boycott do you think people will follow through in a year's time would you think twice about the king a flight I would pierce because I try no twice with Ryanair to get somewhere previously it was the Icelandic volcano and I'm not sleeping on your phone or even for that I know it but it's just sort of pick me off I think in the future I think if I've got to be somewhere. Anyone other than. Yeah I mean I find him with my hand like you tomorrow but I think you know I know you're very journalistic in recent He could copy isn't it is a good copy but also I think we need a few more Mike Louise not necessarily in the way that he runs his business but in the way he conducts himself there's absolute nuts and bolts on his do you know what you're going to get and yeah he's entertaining but the question of would I still fight with them I mean I certainly would for that very reason it's a bit the bottom line isn't I mean I was looking yesterday. It would actually cost me more than twice as much to get a return trip into London from school on a particular day we took this month and it would be to fly to Stansted and back with Ryanair and almost inevitably in that situation you're going to get cheaper option especially when travel seems to be becoming more and more expensive all the time and wages are stagnant thing so people are going to the people can't afford to be principled essentially I think is is that is the problem here I don't see any Can a substantial boy caught taking place over run over you know who's really struggling with customer satisfaction at the moment actually is be 8 because they have dared to start charging for some ridges and Among be a customers who expect a certain level of luxury from what used to be the world's favorite airline. That is beyond the pale Ryanair cancel your flight you almost kind of expect that's where Ryanair are in the market and that's why there will be a book. Starting to crack down on baggage in the cabin that's the thing being no running Ryanair and you know adding to costs all the the cheaper airlines are. Are doing that adding to the having to actually you know we flew as many if not most of our listeners will have done we flew on our Some a whole day with Ryanair this year and I thought they were actually quite generous with the amount you can put in the overhead locker that's changed so come back or let the boat not you eat Yeah really because that's a shame because I thought they were trying to keep going off of Michael O'Leary. You know that that's about to change as it is that that actually drove me mad in the queue all these people with these sort of wheelie. In your suitcase above your head that's right and there was no queue took forever because half of them were being told no that has to go in the hole in the hold and know they're being told no it does have to go in the hall because you can pay for a bag in the Hall Yes I thought they would try an eco is much cash out of you and keep only what you take a hamburger on but no it was the opposite remember that it's all well it's only interesting if you know what I mean I can see the bottle see her in them but I think what will hurt them is if they can't fix this pilot problem yes yes there's a significant problem it's not just someone's caught up in the rostering or the you are seeing if the pilots don't like it then go work for someone else they don't know what they're doing in that region here it's not in the air they were for a long haul there's various reasons and there's always flame pilots I mean it's a good job in that and that's an entry level I guess I'd listen I don't know there really is something a lot of pilots here but but but that would seem to me to be if the if you want if you can get into the game and that is your entry level salary always be vacancies there but. They are always doing them currently a faster rate than the you know replace them and that's probably what I'm telling you so they can't fix if it's continually get cancelled at the era when becomes much less reliable not make a start with the king because you're not sure if you're going to if your flight is going to go ahead exactly like that and you've got to get on top of that it's not just pilots either when other low cost airlines start raising their game in terms of customer service that's where all hurt them but they have to broadly keep up with that level of the market and the cabin crew are talking about Stefano as well and right now there's talk in the Washington cabin it's going to be scrapped isn't it because. There is not want to back down but it's like all these things you know there's no such thing as a free lunch is no such thing as a holy cheap things somebody somewhere is always paying a price you know cheap clothes cheap Trower for cheap you know somewhere there's somebody taking a hit on it it's like the consumer but you know it's the star fixator And if you're one of the staff if you know one of the stuff in your family you know in these things come home Speaking of which another method of travel that has caused a lot of controversy around the price we pay for cheap travel is that taxi. Is going to the company back up yes and they've been told that they're going to lose their license in London what do you think of that Peter. Well I think it's probably unlikely to happen I mean at the moment I've been told they're going to whistle why since and they're going to appeal there aren't any and during which time during the time of the appeal they're allowed to keep on working and wonder and I think probably will be some kind of compromise reached that means they'll be a lota And the reason we can see that the reason that they're losing their license is because the transport felt that they went to fit company there were worries about security yeah. And worries about the sort of terms and conditions for the the drivers which you're basically get of calling me sort of yeah so trying to transport for one they're trying to apply no clear rules to and regulations and kind of a sort of statement of human decency to you know this kind of world West can a good thing and I just feel interesting about this yes there was that the response from London there was I felt was was really pret
