Years he's a regular on just pure millions of panel shows on T.V. And radio and he's also been to with his show do politically for Putin Agee's What's time of his mind I was going to be talking to a budget listing just to say before us let's listen to him in action he is reflecting on his own admittedly strong reaction to a rather classic dad's dilemma My eldest boy recently for the 1st time and I think it's quite safe to cite I reacted rather badly to this incident when. She brought the individual in question in the house that I paid for with money I earned I. Thought that this is still a. Billy right nice yet OK Billy Billy sweet I'll come put the kettle on that he's going to talk to present I see because the kitchen she doesn't realize anything is wrong and I start reversing this around the house because when you're my size you can reverse smaller men. Back off if. I. Mention get believe in or wall you can't go any further I'm not. William. As much as touch. I will cut you I which point. And Billy started crying and I. But that is 6 year old Sawyer because I. Told you for tourists who joins me know welcome back to the Afternoon Show Hello Grant how you know very good very good and as a father of a daughter I'm just with you and everyone. Agreed to be on the show and before we get get stuck in to push city listed you've sat in this seat yourself you've provided no end to this show it's a different skill set isn't it do you enjoy it I've been with the same and you know you're working with night that same there on the on the show is just so great just get everything together for you and I did a wake of of of being Janice and there was quite well as I'm very much enjoyed being. Media savvy Scottish woman I'm special I and. I just it was just great I just found it fascinating because. Rather than you know a Janice is as this kind of Janet says it's kind of a journalistic sheen of expertise about things you know brings a certain knowledge to the side whereas I kind of much more the wide eyed fan about things and so I could what I could bring the time was was she a curiosity and I enjoyed sort of that aspect of it but yes. As a really I remember one afternoon I had sort of I've read some Barbara Dixon and a couple of the sort of people talking about Gerry Rafferty and he just turned into an old Scottish musicians from Paisley reunion afternoon and I can get I don't get a word and I lost control of the show completely bro embroider Well I'm certainly and your current issues as well that's that's going to approach to cut back on touch the knowledge of the wonderful Jonas ever listening feels great I was a guest. And so what can we expect Let's get stuck at a deeper city that what's what's in store a little a little sore soups all over T.V. Yeah I kind of why I decided well was that. Because you when you you've got a sore certain style of doing the job as you get older he kind of you don't want to get on to that sort of treadmill of Let's do you know you get the new show together you do the woman shows you get the show in pieces into its shape and then you tour it and then you do Edinburgh and then he stop for a while and then you start that process again I did Morning ever get into that sort treadmill some when I realized because I've been doing there of a choir a while I'm much like it's ever been in there for a fair a while I just thought right let's let's do the how do we cut how do we at what do we do different what can we do different and there's always what I like to think and I 1st applied that sort of model of doing things differently to Edinburgh kind of been doing Edinburgh Fringe for a while and I thought how they're going to do it differently and I remember one year I had 2 gigs a day and I quite liked the fact that I couldn't concentrate so much on one of them because I was at the other one to worry about as well it kind of and then I thought well what happens if you do 3 takes a day and I kind of just kept staring and the most I got to a position about 4 years ago I was doing 5 gigs are dying and I was overwhelming saying that I'm a no the comedian Martin Moore was staying in I'm pretty sure he was staying in North Beric and he was cycling into Edinburgh every day and doing 5 gigs and then cycling back at the end of the night after the last one so don't tell me about me working out I did 3 a day and I think that's that's a workable sort of level because it's and I I like that I like slightly pushing yourself to 2 odds because green not male more so I made it through the 2nd you know think of yourself I don't want to hear is the thing is that I think that if you work 2 aren't you know if you put slightly too much in your brain doesn't get a chance the mail is too busy to melt your brains too busy to mail because you've got a gig to do and so I just think it brings out the more well to me. Automatic side of the performer in you and so you just get it done let's get it done because we've got another one in there and off you go on stage and it's there's there was only I mean you think maybe when I got tired one of the known I think maybe in the middle of the partition I'm often in a lot where my what I do there is just that kind of and I think that's more of a 56 I'll be honest with you you know just the age that creeps up on us or where yeah and I'm a very hard and fast. A kind of rule with myself about not drinking I think too many people to Edinburgh like a holiday and it's like if you if you behave if and when it goes on holiday your listeners are they going to go on holiday for a week or 2 weeks you don't die for a month you're just going to be begging to come off right through the 3rd wake absolutely beg and that's what it was like you know that people get so that that kind of day 15 and they just start to that start look that haunted look on their faces you know when will this ad and I think one of our favorite quotes towards the end of the fringe that was a Guardian journalist a song about I always remembered it and it's like on that very last Monday after the sort of 3 and a half we knew this is Edinburgh has the look of it like a house party where the host has just walked in on the big late start hoovering and I think. It's. So we feel and you look at your career as we're just off you know doing very very quickly here and because of how you've approached you know just for example you talk about there with regards to you push the fringe with regards to your you're approaching this to Yaz your Soho mindset with regard to the approach of a short changed in you know the sort 25 yeah you've been doing this but it's going to because you're a different bloke can you as you get older you changes a person your outlooks change your attitudes change you know it's not a member go in the eighty's as that loads of political stuff when I was doing the poetry really political or nail my reactions politics is straight Ronnie each I gotta go to anger. I take me 30 seconds and I'm like screaming into the microphone and I remember my Mrs saying no pain like she does. Very much you just screaming about how much you hate what politicians. She went because you got no. They don't let you know what they get right to own their own range so I talk about the fact that I can't do that anymore don't seem to either a cogent world view anymore like that and so. I mean frustration and inability to deal with things can be made funny and that sort of where I'm at today is more the sort of general storytelling thing and I think I might I do a did a comedy over 56 year old father of 2 grown women who have flown the nest you know is kind of wondering what to do with himself next you know there's a there's a certain kind of you know your butt shall not get a great expression where he said that you do mind you're minding your own personality as a stand up comedian and it's just the deal that you have with the audience is how much of yourself are you going to give to them how much you know let them see now what I've talked to members about this is well you do let them see a version of yourself but you let them see a fake version of yourself and that's what it is and it's it's you tend to kind of keep the real stuff you say you can just say don't be mad with it you know I always I always used to wonder Jonathan Ross lived his life because he's he was on the radio we talk so much about his life every week but things that happened and I'm like did the family not get anything that's just this. Well we just talk you know and you know we have a clip I'm not going to go for the clip because it would mean that we run it's like yes I work in child with you yeah you do bring your experiences we touch the air with with a little clip that we had about your daughter brilliant bring it home yeah boy we now there's a other clip as well how do your family react when you when you're bringing these family experiences on to well you're getting a kind of out by accident you know I kind of I remember sort of I was I was put in a position where I hadn't done stand up in 8 years in the company said We had no different T.V. Show where you go and do gigs in New York and we bring in you your comedian over to do the gigs you do and of course the thing is is that as an as a as a. Over there in America I love it because you want exotic accent and you and you might get it to come over and Americans about this kind of yeah go on my good luck to you whereas in the U.K. Poor old Eugene Mirman went on stage at The Comedy Store how I knew Jane and I'm from New York and the girl cried Well why did you go back there. Is a different if you don't read people coming in visiting let's put it that way. Someone I did when I was in America my I thought our talk about the family and remember thinking I don't know my family I'm in America forgetting that it was being filmed for a television program so it ended up on I remember my wife was initially sort of I don't think you should talk to my Emily on stage you know I'm not sure that was a good thing for you to do that's a personal life and my daughter came into the room and she was saying this to me and my door up through our arms around me and my daddy you talked about me on T.V. Thank you and so you know well you know that's a seal of approval you know it's something they just thankfully you know the Internet generations I got saved by millennial by a millennial you know regards the family you moved everybody up here because I want to know where you were and then what about you know you got peace in Fife as well yeah yeah I mean 5 I mean 5 nail on the coast I've got well I got a daughter in America so she she moved away anyway married a girlfriend so she's over there and me other daughter lives in the Midlands and so the kids about flown the coop and I love Scotland on the life and so it was it was a it was a no brainer to come up they really you know it's a it's a it's a it's an amazing little community absolutely we're just having one he was you and I go that's the thing about Scottish papers and I care that you're on telly it's just like I'm just not a mechanic to. Your view if you had to get gigs lately fell hope you had gags being good or that did the off. License you. Know I love favors I know a song about faith but we'll be sure that with you at another time I talk of the songs we're focusing very much on saw me. You know you know you can just sit and play with you with your D. About music I'm sure. Because of coming on and yeah and he's talking about is his book The Future of soul and favorite sole source of can we narrow it down and I believe you got a special little bad joint today about your passion for music yeah I know I'm well my way and I'll go I've got me I've got to pay not badger if anyone I'm on the Instagram should feel gypped is 5276 and I've got a painter Spads today which is which is Schroeder it was the piano player saying that buying records or was cheers me up is that little of a pain that's yeah and I love that I was Elvis Shakespeare and then lethal was in there and and most of the one with the. Vinyl and vinyl vinyl in a row yeah a lot of vinyl villains and. My different was up sign an editor recently and he was like oh you know where are the record shops and Terry Edwards was was up as well he was playing up there with a baton and all my mates are in bands are always where the record shops and then around my vinyl and every Shakespeare there are other record shops are available in Edinburgh but
