Radio Scotland news Thanks Lucy and welcome to Saturday mornings yearly b c Radio Scotland with me on Johnny my guest today are journalists Hannah McGill Peter Gagan of investigative news site the threats and joining us for the 1st time former captain of the Scotland women's national football team Gemma Feig Good morning to you and welcome Gemma So thank you and let's give a summary of what we're talking about this week we'll be talking about the Penshoppe bashing of Emma names who's not a name has been causing offense as the grand fellow inquiry starts Judge Moore bit find himself under scrutiny How does theaters cause controversy by introducing ob there is Easton Barton sure really the best place in the u.k. To be a woman let's have a listen to some of the week's big moments. Christiane good that was the most open all its time truly worrying speech in my long years in this place former residents of the time and other local people feel a great sense of anger and betrayal. He said to me straight in the eye with no one else around and he scored the lines I had on. The back to get me anything I'm here . To get on the phone and. We just arrived at this place and as you can see from these 5 have only just been made in fact we bumped into the people almost 70 minutes and counting machetes I'm not made one p.r. Spin and the ship thanks to the state that you can't do something or you cannot achieve what you want to achieve. All that and more to come here b.b.c. Radio Scotland with me should be 9 Johnny and you can join the conversation online throughout the program using the hash tag Shereen But 1st up says in the aisles this week as the languages are to fend was put under the spotlight when retail giant pined London unveiled a new line of chocolate covered nuts the packaging of the brightly colored m. And m. Style confectionery features 3 cross-eyed characters emblazoned with the brand name not hers mental health campaign as I've said the sweets branding is a real step backwards and reducing the stigma around mental health calling it offensive and distressing panel under spotted by saying that their popularity suggests customers don't have an issue with the product but they will examine the issue they see at their next product review and Gemma what do you think about this deal do you find it offensive I think that if that the board was not accompanied by the cartoon images of cross I candies on the front of it I think we would it wouldn't be such an issue but I think by doing that they're associating the word worth people that perhaps of of not going to the kind of base mental health and I think much wrong in a conversation that is whether or not it's necessary to use that word in describing chocolate covered not so I don't think it's necessary and. Not necessary but what do you think Hannah I mean it is exactly that so you can you can argue all day about whether a word can be inherently hopeful to people or not one of. Yes there are plenty of ways in which language changes and something that didn't used to be termed offensive or considered offensive has become so and maybe some people aren't aware of that and maybe it takes a bit of catching up or maybe people believing clinging jealously to their right to use the same language that they've used all their lives that's all a sort of separate discussion from whether if you're launching a new product you deliberately give it a name that is already you know already pretty people are pretty aware that stigmatizes a certain sector of society which rightly has become a vocal about not being stigmatized so I think it's that thing of like is this really a question of freedom of speech or is it just you could have just chosen a name that wasn't obviously kind of difficult for some people do you have a difficulty with that word Percy Do you ever use it I don't think do I use that word. Maybe it is a cultural thing it would be it's not a word I would have grown up at all that much is not a word that we Jews it's not a word I would have grown up with using all that often so I don't know that word per se maybe not we do have a problem with it I don't like it depends on the context and that's the context is everything and I think that's the key thing with something like this what you're well I'm kind of looking I want to see this is imagine the Poundland executives sitting in the office of Poundland going we're going to make this Newsweek and someone shows a clipboard and we're going to call the not and it's a really good idea I mean that's the bit where I kind of struggle no one put their hand up maybe this isn't a great show you go back a really long time I was thinking I remember when I was a child the Cadbury's fruit and nut bars had an advertising campaign that was everyone's a fruit nut case and that was at the time I remember my dad saying to me this is not Ok because you don't call people not cases that's 30 years ago at least and you know so it's not as if they couldn't possibly say we didn't know this was used in advance of way and I don't know if an essay comes down to whether you use that word in your private life or not I think a lot of a say things unguardedly that we are aware might not be appropriate in other contexts if you're putting something on a shelf to sell in a shop that's not the same as what you might say in the privacy of your own home among people who know your sense of humor who know what your values and ethics are is I think it's a. Different positions for corporates and individuals or yeah as well that this is a corporation this is a creation of products whether someone says a word or not says or I think that starts a different discussion of the ocean on contact let's have that discussion because if you're saying is definitely. A private individual to use the word what what context is acceptable and what isn't I guess it's it would depend on which you know where using if you're saying I guess the problem I think John is tell you right if you look at just focusing just on this product it's just look there's something off about having these little suites that look kind of godly are huge and the word not just leaves about you know point intended leaves a bad taste and emotion wears if you're going to use that you know you can tell God that guys are really not sure it means the only good look going to have a drink is great croc is a man around town you know are you could say but watch out for a guy he's And you know you could use it in a pejorative way around mentally I think there is this context for all words how you use words as has contacts I think the problem I think we should find another word I mean I'm thinking of for example the p. Word and for Pakistani and a lot of people used to use the corner shop and all the rest of it they didn't mean it in in a pejorative sense but you know gradually as awareness has. Been raised about you know that can be used as at a time of abuse people are being cut is not to do it because by using it even in a nice we you are giving people you're encouraging people to use and abundantly so could that be the case with words like not to him again until whatever the challenge with us is if you like to be the Harvey or Dr to like the p. Word r d n word which has been reclaimed by some as it is that is something that's racially or Attlee motivation which someone has no doubt is something that is written on someone's skin using the word no source on it I can actually were referred to a property of things you could be talking about somebody in a range of different context I do think that is different to how you use words like the context in which Doc Work can be. Can be so different words are using the word you're talking about specifically you know I think the context is backed up by the image that's pretty intimate on us and there's a level of responsibility here there's a level of corporate responsibility when you're selling these to the general public within the general public there's a cross section that may suffer from from illnesses that are protected in that way in certain parts of the media or in film or whatever should we do that no we probably shouldn't do that who didn't say no because for me I'm not a corporate market niƱa is probably a pretty bad idea is that a word that you would use and does context matter I think context matters hugely. I think I mean I would perhaps refer to myself and this is coming from I don't come from a background where my family has suffered mental health issues and I don't take offense of us and I was not a point in time it's a term it's a phrase to describe how I was I was behaving that saying that's how I refer to myself a problem when going to something that I don't know and say you're a complete nutter but I think it's also once again context I could say I had a mental day doesn't mean it's got anything to do with mental health or my you know psychological welfare to do with how crazy my day was and as contacts and as as long as I'm careful about who are use that with and I'm not causing or seem to be causing offense to others I think you have to be careful about that and that's something you have to take a conscious decision on I was listening to the foreigner in this we can Radio Scotland and there are lots of people saying probably more more from an older generation Israel saying look we don't know what we can and can't see anymore I mean I think that's a real thing I think that it's very easy if you happen to be someone who is very well versed in the language of what is now called social justice even these kinds of terms are relatively new there's a very very vocal very vocal groups and sets of people largely on the Internet who are very conscious of what they think should and shouldn't be said that's great that's for. Enough they are helping to move on conversations they're helping to remove stigma you can't necessarily expect that these decisions automatically transmit to the entire population at once because if you're not embedded in those worlds you don't know that it used to be Ok to say transsexual it's now not that it used to be Ok to say colored it's now not these things are part of the evolution of how we look after people how we try and prevent stigmatization and fencing off of groups of people but that evolution doesn't happen by common consent and it happens in groups and then you know and quite often people say I don't understand why one word can be more offensive than another and that's because as we're saying it's all about Con And yeah I wonder if 20 years time with e.g. a Member when it used to be Ok distilling nutter we will see. You read on b.b.c. B. Do Scotland and still to come here b.b.c. Radio Scotland with me Johnny would you sit through cinema stale video our barracks at the theatre Woman's Hour think Eastern Barton shows the best place in the u.k. To be a woman do you agree and the right thing to do or rather is dominating this week's big dramas that for us I'm here with my guests had a McGill Gemma fi and Peter Gagan And it's that time we get your moment of the week Hanna Well this leads on perfectly from what we were just talking about I mean I wanted to talk about the launch this past week of the Scottish mental health Arts Festival and it was called the Scottish mental health arts and Film Festival they've now simplified that name slightly because it is you know it's a cross arts festival that also has a film festival and a film awards component to it this is a an event now going into its 11th year and it's been spreading across Scotland has $300.00 events this year in 17 different parts of Scotland obviously mental health as we were just saying is an incredibly broad subject area and so you can almost say that all arts is going to touch on areas that relate to mental health so that makes it really inclusive interesting 1st of all where the connecting line is that it's to do with how individuals mental and emotional reality impacts on their their way through. In the world and it's really great and the film is performing arts there's life which is music is visual arts all sorts of different things from local producers and presenters of stuff too to bigger projects from elsewhere it launched in Paisley last week there are events in Paisley and go all over the place spoken words in Paisley and Edinburgh from Clinton pitch all sorts of great stuff so this is from the 10th of October through until the end of October all across Scotland it's really worth checking out the website it's good stuff Ok and Gemma what was your moment of the week you've been on your travels this week I have indeed my moment of the week has to do with the young pastor program which is run jointly by sports cool new Sport Trust and it's actually a legacy from the Commonwealth Games in the lead up to the London Olympics and the Commonwealth Games was a program put in place to identify kind of future leaders within within schools within Scotland and this week I'm going to open a bone with with the team holding a bunch of conferences where we get to go in and explain our sporting journey as athletes and the challenges we face in the difference that people like them when I was at school made by by giving opportunities to take part in sport physical activity and just to be part of a group and feel good about yourself and it was great because I was sitti
