Give us 3 rings this morning 8 minutes past 7 b.b.c. Radio talking pumps today on the program inspired today by the chap from Plymouth Ben Koos who's completed a 20000 mile pub crawl in his car 21 countries started the most northerly finish at the most southerly. Started in the north and Norwegian island in a little old mining town called. It's a former mining town this for people that has got one pub an excellent ratio as we were saying earlier almost as good as. I'm in trouble all the way down south through South America thousands and thousands of miles to Porto Williams or dealt in Chile when to a dump of a bob and this comes of it down there with the 20000 miles wasn't quite worth the final bomb. We're talking plastic patio furniture Chilean lying down on t.v. In a menu which consisted only of lager and cheap whisky which frankly apart from those full things I'm not sure what else you want on a night out in. Your stories of pubs today to famous ones you've been to notable ones you've been to we've been wonderful ones and remote ones playing Already any events that have been too in a pot that you cannot believe take one triple through a stop that text with the word late at b.b.c. Leads on Twitter to get in touch with the programme it's called Last August. And also on the show I was celebrating 28 known fact 58 of the West Indian carnival that was actually the last Carnival. It feeds was 2017 there's a new book out right now that documents it's half century 30 different photographers as countries. We speak to one in a moment's time of the program music from the full talks on the Rhythmix and our what song guide on the way as well so. Joining so. B.b.c. Radio. I . Don't I'm. Trying. To strike things must counterpunch just trust you will be well aware I'm sure because we love this event the West Indian economy. She's the oldest of its kind. It's brings Chapeltown to life every single year has done so for 50 years and. It's something which is an absolute jewel in the crown of the events when it comes to us you know Shish And now there's a new book out celebrating its Hof century of life. You've come to what's a just walk in parade and downs and no one would literally make you feel like you shouldn't be there so it was you know that you fell free to do everything you wanted down something just more about how you are. A man in this project but Strickland. Has to do this more broadly and it was a kind of one day it was like oh you know there's a carnival so we need to go and then I was like oh yeah I was a Carnival says you know and then I didn't know it was a carnival so we went and then was to be honest it was a move that. Such shell was sent home. With a. All 5 states right there with the years I was in the train system used to go to pieces pings and shared between Shelby used to do all the events building up to town police to go into an impact from the basement yet meanwhile Gumley used to watch the corner watch the troops come up and I was laughing just going to the show . And we used to just we're not saying that to get the last truck used to be like the you in the trucks so you take a kind of music of the younger clips are trying to music as favorably use the old school clips but yeah you still listening because that was one thing that used to do all the time. Just some of the memories of the carnival when speaking to people to mark 50 years at The Last Carnival it's been documented in this new book How the lead carnival remains rooted in the Caribbean community and tells the story and its history and I'm really pleased to say that one of the editors guy for eyes is here on the program Hi Guy how you I'm fine thanks very much this is a great idea I mean I guess you could have made this at any point because he's got such a rich history but when did you make the decision to put this book together I think it was just our that the carnival in the summer $26.00 thing because we knew it takes some time to get the money together get photographers they gather think about how we're going to present the story of Carnival so it took about you know 6 months that they were all there and we really got going on producing the book the intent I imagine one of the difficulties has been deciding what to leave out of this because with something as visual as a carnival I bet you've had thousands of pictures to go through how many Well exactly we did a for the community call out and we you know people are looking photographs in boxes on the bed maybe on their wall that the few of us who I hope that the who've been documenting carnival we already had a good few 1000 we want to make sure that local people who maybe. Participates in Canada were in its food or watched or from the crowds that they could also submit photos to be considered for the book we wanted to make sure that it captured carnival in the round every element of common but you found some gems as well haven't you had it in people's very special collections and I think that exactly and but if we did have a set of criteria that we used to choose whether a photograph could be included one of which was you know that was a good quality image but we wanted to tell a story about Carnival so we did have a few themes that we tried to incorporate into the book and make sure that the pictures told the story as well and what were those things things about we wanted to make sure that we people realized it was a multicultural celebration of the lead represented leads both in the past and I'm currently. Tells stories about what went on behind the scenes the costume making the thousands of people involved in that the family nature of carnival that you know you your kids could be in Kamel you might have gone year off see 'd a grown up call in the bill we want to tell a bit about Caribbean history about the story of emancipation a spot carnival can't has the influences that leads West Indian Carnival has from across the Caribbean from bondage Caribbean the friends even South Asian communities that participate and so we went to the to really to tell the whole picture of a but there's some fantastic documentation of how fashions it's changed over the ages in that and especially costume design and House of well that how sophisticated they were even in 1967 you know when when the we had the queen selling the makable room in town and you know they were spectacular then and you know they represent the hours of both design and construction that goes in but nowadays that they are you know this is the obviously the Carnival parade is spectacular but we wanted to cite a lot. Things go behind gone behind the thing comes to that day and I know that you want to make this available not for the people just to get nostalgic about but education as well you want to use this is a piece of documentation of history in trying to get into schools and libraries exactly it's gone through 3 little schools and libraries and Li's this is a it does have a narrative it does tell you a bit about the background carnival worldwide it tells you certainly the history of Leeds Carnival so we wanted to represent the knowledge about history that that sort of story and particularly the thousands of people who often go on acknowledged in sort of public event in the name the characters the carnival cost and so you know really makes all those people who are made public for the city of Leeds and just finally Guy What do you think he's the legacy of the cannibal what do you think your book shows that he's cannibal has brought to West usually I think that this is a Caribbean lead a unique Caribbean led event but that It's 'd an inclusive event he encourages and enclose all sections of the community and that it has a sort of. The stuff going on under the surface and all that cost the body. The music and the food that you need been. Through that represent the Caribbean history and how Carnival. The remains of many people what. The book is celebrate 50 years of Leeds West Indian Carnival is just funny guy where can people get their hands on it well as a 33 you can have a look at the local library and hopefully no libraries but it is available in good books so 'd. I think the gallery they have it well great stuff I got it thanks very much for talking to us Guy It's a bargain she had to take care. Guys around to. Celebrate 50 years so all leads West Indian carnival it's a beautiful looking book as you might expect something is vision as. The richness that context it's absolutely perfect for a school full of crammed packed full of pictures I think is about 650 pictures in there all together. On a Saturday morning 18 minutes past 7. Radio Leeds every Saturday from 9 o'clock cut back over to thank you very well I crave your results I'm relaxing pretty serious Chris I'm going to go. This is a little mix Big sure you know you try to play really care I wouldn't prefer anything really really how are we become really bright. Ok what is black white black white no idea of paying them well enough Ok we. Are you going to the group join me for Little Mix big show every Saturday from 9 o'clock b.b.c. Radio Leeds Yes good morning it's Johnny Heyneke here at 9 o'clock catch up with Nick usually want to know something like that as I have been doing everybody this week has been telling me about the excellent cheese and bass he supposedly you said how did I sweet and I had to ask whether it was a question or statement and only when caring about my weight and it's like if I was me about cheese invest cheese and beer soup is just a wonderful thing that doesn't sound it's not what you'd automatically think of when it comes to soup it's probably not summer so I probably not even just the ingredients on the right not like it's not like a you know a leaking potato combination maybe a bit like a camera it's not even something that you'd ever consider 2 of the greatest food stuffs in the world and to the most important I think we can agree on cheese and beer mixed together is only get away and in a good thing I would think I'm not I mean you're not selling it to me just try it that's what I say Ok that's your mission next time you're on your go and try to cheat and it's it's amazing it's a Yorkshire thing no it's definitely not your thing it's just a thing just a thought Yeah sure thing that we discovered some time ago and is always since then forever being the reason to go to your cologne Ok Haussmann I'm not as though you know that's the name of the pot. So how's the weather looking all right today soaring to 50 Yeah so I was going to see things get worse for the better I think today but it's nice for my in not for you and I obviously tried that excuse before yeah we're so it's getting quite cloudy through the morning we'll see this band of very patchy light drizzly rain but it could be a little bit wintry over any higher ground is moving through from the very far north west so it's starting to break in fragments a lot and dragging its heels to be honest as it goes but it will move off through the late part of morning the early part of the afternoon and we should start to see something a bit brighter and sunny I think we'll see things improving quite quickly actually later in the day temperatures about 8 Celsius and sunshine to end the day I think given the lighter winds we should feel a bit strength in the sun at long last that's good yet then overnight drying clear so very very cold temperatures dropping right down to the minus figures minus one minus 2. Patches as well for me so not the greatest start to the day tomorrow in that they could be some quite dense fog locally but some pointless as well it's going to very cold but it won't stick around for too long it's kind of the opposite some more will see the clouds moving in and it will get the rest of the worse I think through the day with perhaps a bit patchy drizzle too and the day but a very cloudy mild night into Monday same and day no frost is going to be much milder temperatures could climb to about 10 or 11 degrees a little bit milder Monday yet but quite unsettled actually with some rain that could turn heavy and a bit persistent at times and that continue overnight to choose day but it will will fizzle out so all the cheese day could be a bit of a grim start think it will improve dryer by to chilly at night we thought by the world go wash the car this weekend Ok so today or Sunday would you recommend. The tricky one that's what you want if I'd probably go this afternoon this afternoon yesterday. Afternoon big Saturday afternoon. Thanks very much hello to our favorite Chinese listener Robin Jang Bonnie Joni never tried alcohol yet still going to pub could certainly go and see the ballpark or something like that just wish you a Happy Chinese New Year yes you too I know.
