News at 5.6 b.b.c. Radio 5 Live the release of the u.k. 5 Live break 1st listen. And discover the b.b.c. Sounds. Good morning everyone how you day Monday morning start of a new week and let's just catch up very briefly with what's happening over in India and Chennai It's day 3 of the 2nd Test against India that just got off the launch and after an awful 1st innings from England yesterday India worst. A bit today although they recruit slightly the current 156 for 6 months but it seems like there's still a mountain to climb if England are really going to be in any serious chance of getting a graphic so we will keep in touch and of course throughout the course of the morning on 5 live by faith which today this week comes to you with Rachel and Patrick Kielty morning Patty good morning Richard how you doing good not too bad thanks not too bad to feel you know the whole thing. Has come at the right time I think. I mean I can't believe I've done this I've actually so you know caught in the purgatory that is home school and then come in for work this week and I shouldn't come into work this week why I should have done as a should have done work this week and then got off of the homeschooling messes which she should be doing homeschooling and I'm at work and then she got the week off what about. Early planned. It is after week a brick for homeschooling for millions of families in England and Wales lots of other reasons to be optimistic this morning as well Rachel the government says it has hit the target of offer and 1st vaccines to the top 4 priority groups in England a total of more than $15000000.00 people in the u.k. Have had the 1st jab across the 4 Nations well over 90 percent of people in those top 4 groups have been vaccinated and the prime minister released this message online we have reached a significant milestone in the United Kingdom's national that's Nation program on the 8th of December just after 6 30 in the morning this country's 1st crowbars jab was delivered safely into the arms of Kenyan University Hospital in Concord. In the following 2 months this country has achieved an extraordinary feat a mystery a total of 15000000 jabs into the arms of soldiers both people in the country to remember the excitement on that 1st day and all the fuss and attention quite rightly of Margaret kid and as well at the time Bill Shakespeare of course lest we forget because he was the I think the 1st vaccinated patient in Oxford I think wasn't he was somewhere out field it feels a very very long time ago doesn't but look what's happened in that time 50000000 vaccinations 1st OS x. And I since of course that make that distinction so maybe 50000000 reasons to be optimistic how are you feeling this morning do you feel I mean most of you may not be out of bed yet but do you feel like you have a little bit of a spring in your step this morning at 5 o 5 Let us know also a few hints over the weekend about what the Road Map out of lockdown in England at least might look like including schools reopening. Should hopefully start happening from the 8th of March some outdoor sports and non essential shops as well and then using for strictures on hospitality at a later date it isn't as you're tasing this ritual someone is in Whitehall as we speak with a pen and a pencil scratching this wondering on that's less going on for another couple of weeks you might have some good news. Also suggestions from the Telegraph that could be a relaxation of rules for meeting someone from outside your high sold one on one when children are involved meaning that grandparents could see their grandkids again. I mean that would just be amazing we have more of this. All next Monday when the prime minister is expected to set out his plan any 2nd of February is when they will or the government has said they will start to lay out their plans for the easing of lockdown in England will talk to the Tory backbench M.P.'s Steve Baker now he's deputy chair of the covert recovery group of M.P.'s a bit later he wants easing to happen more quickly in fact he's kind of said let's open everything back up again I want to find out from him exactly how far he would go with that but if you have your own views please share them with this is morning also told to Professor Mike tells me about Professor of infectious disease modeling at the University of Warwick and a member of one of the advisory groups which feeds into the government's age committee morning Mike good morning so 15000000 1st doses across the u.k. What's your reaction to that oh I mean it's great news are you know are in the last few months right that they're all full of interviews and appear to have said you know given an awful situation that you know this is this is really good news I think it's gone far better than I probably thought it would have done a couple of months ago now of course you quite rightly said these are 1st doses we do need to remember that these individuals need to go and have their 2nd doses but actually a lot of the reports that are coming out suggest that actually there's a pretty high levels of really even a few weeks after the 1st dose So definitely when they've been in the right direction we do need to keep going we need to encourage as many people as possible particularly younger people who may not be as affected by the vaccine to take it up when offered but certainly it provides us with good hopefully in the relatively near future to start relaxing locked arm and vaccine hesitancy is a thing of the piece in the newspaper this morning saying within the health service in Leicester there we'd be concerned about the lower take up in some groups of health care workers it's not something that you've come across Mike you know I think it is a concern and I mean we do know that certainly if we look at the data it's been quite. Heterogeneous shall we say so there's been quite. High uptake in certain communities lower uptaking of the communities and this is a worry because you know let's say we had high you know after each high uptake maybe of 90 percent for instance across Everett if we were treating if that's fantastic but if it happens to be that there's certain communities where uptake is lower the danger is that we could get the virus spreading rapidly within those certain groups so I think it's something we do need to look at and make sure that we get high level of uptake across the board so that we can really get ahead of things and start to see that the number of cases decline as we go across the the next few months key question is what impact the immunization program is having in the real world on the progress of this virus and I learn a thing the other day Patrick I was quite excited about this I tell you taken me a year to learn this the difference between effectiveness and efficacy Mica my right efficacy is you know Lab controlled conditions effectiveness is how the vaccine how well it works in real life conditions Well yeah I mean we tend to use the term efficacy really to refer to well as an individual in it in a particular controlled environment how you know what the likelihood is all of an individual being protected if they are vaccinated but yes activeness really is how does it work in the real world once you actually put it out into the field as it were how does it work across the population so you know just because we see one level of efficacy in you know in trials doesn't necessarily mean that's true when it happens across populations as we've said it's not it's not necessarily the case that we get completely sort of you know average coverage across the population if we do get these pockets of people where we don't get the same level of uptake then of course it might not be as effective as we may think it would be based upon our sort of efficacy trials as it were yes our Public Health England are going to reveal their assessment of the effectiveness of vaccines in the real world a little bit later on this week in. I presume that will also influence the road out of lockdown and the papers as Patty was referring to there Mike talking about maybe some outdoor meetings in March that's exciting The Daily Telegraph goes further talking about possible East to get a ways within the u.k. What what do you feel about that kind of talk because I do think I know a lot of people have very very very cautious but I think for a lot of people waking up this morning that will make their world a little bit lighter to think well maybe we can see friends family a few weeks down the road yeah I think we really important actually I think we do need something to look forward to I think people we've had a really rotten last 12 months and I think having something to look forward to for our own well being is important so I think it's clear it's important that this kind of road back is laid out but we do need to be careful not to east things too rapidly I think we need to remember that these these vaccines are not 100 percent effective so if we let's say you know I know the government won't do this but let's say we relaxed all controls tomorrow for example then of course we have to remember that the on them would go up significantly and the fact that the vaccines don't protect everyone would be that those there are vulnerable but not protect higher risk so we do need to ease out a little bit cautiously and allow the allow the vaccine to keep up with the level of relaxation so that we don't get it thanks so much Mike no problem at all Take care Mike tells me Professor Mike tells me I should say from the University of Warwick ritual it was a terrible moment there when I genuinely thought you were going to ask me the difference between effectiveness and Africa's I don't do that I do that cynical Campbell that's. What he did when he jumped in and just just nailed it I was I was breathing a sigh of relief there. So bit of optimism going on there throughout the morning going to be speaking to a lot of people who've been involved with this rule out so far it is great news. Is from the Everest pharmacy in range in Manchester Good morning Omar is here how you guys are we're very well how does it feel to be part of all of this. It's it's a really really unique experience it's truly amazing and. In the pharmacy sector it's not the most common thing to see people walk into a pharmacy with ailments because coming out really happy people are coming in leaving the crying from happiness there's there's a there's a great sense of hope so it's it's really great it's really that it's humbling to see you come in and to say thank you so much when it is that. And the people that are common in obviously their lives have just been completely locked up in so many of the older people in the community and and this really is given people back their lives hence just unbridled joy Yeah it does hope that. Makes it it's like yes I can see my grandchildren seeing it's it's it's something they've missed for a year or over a year now and they're all really really happy so it's it's it is unique to see that it's it's really like really touching or. Just people I or if I could. It's something else that's very good and how many people you get in 3 Are you completely snowed under with this is it manageable highs at work and so we actually have to keep a stiff around 2000 Roxanne's a week at the minute we haven't hit that target the al Assad in Manchester. More people to come in. And we actually opened up a site and Darwin's well and full capacity so we had on the 1st on the 1st 2 and a half days we have we had around 800 people and we were fully booked the following week around again a 100 people so it's office day week we've actually made over 400 people a jury so it's it's been basically pending on the area and the amount of stacks a nation size available to people. And also the different demographics so in our locality one range we have a mix of. So there has been some skepticism and subterranean it seems but we're actually works without a crime he's counselors and all this it's. Local mosques local churches make announcements in China encourage people who are slightly skeptic about vaccines in general vaccination and specially the current career vaccine and we have seen a difference in the uptake we can see more people coming in from different backgrounds so it's it's it's getting better it's getting a lot better so whenever you say that you know you you haven't maybe had you know the maximum tick up in that high does not work to people actually get a call and there are no shows and at the end of the day you've got vaccine left or because you know you hear all the stories of if you go to a pharmacy at the end of the day and they met have some left and if you plead with them you might get it is that just nonsense but that does happen at the end of the day where there are there might be a couple of last overdoses because each vial and they saw react just as in a car accident. And each file has tensor 11 doses so if he acts a past a vial and there's only one person that's about retiring and that's opened up form you will have some left over doses and nothing can go. Of course so people my dad like seeing that wait but what's what's actually happening is there's multiple booking systems so there's a national booking system so if you're referenda last week when they go in and out that one of a series of 7 sings to contact the n.h.s. Direct. That it's through the National booking system and also the local Tikkun surgeries they have their own booking system so they will call in their patients sent to book and so that there are multiple ways people can get booked so that station subsets. So I mean universally talking to me this morning it kind of seems like it's all good news has there been any any negativity for offering this job any anybody worried about anybody given you a bit of a piece. We've had of us haven't met. Is called in to pharmacies anyway but had a few people walked in with us. Just cause chaos trying to start destruct the whole the whole process in what way. Just shouting all you want you guys doing. Have people drive past sad all students you go to hell. With out all sorts but generally speaking the public Ah happy and excited in fact people I had a lady yesterday who was like I want to get older now so I'm a logical sort that seems. Really really want a vaccination so. It's funny that I as a because I turn 50 at the end of last month and normally you know you get a bit older you think and I I and. The joke in our high says that I mean you know when when they were fif
