Reporter as u. S. Has watched irans elections this year, so many people here hoping for change will be looking west with similar interests. Will president obama be replaced by a moderate democrat keen to pursue political and Economic Engagement with iran for the first time in 35 years or would a republican win mean a return to mutual suspiciouss of the past. Suspicions of the past. It is being pulled into the campaign mud slinging and all. Immigration is front and center. Two formers mexican president s have compared the front runner donald trump to the german dictator adolt hitler. It is from saying that mexicans are sending drugs to the u. S. And mexico should pay for a wall. On the democratic side both candidates are promoting immigration reform, a welcome notion here. Another topic of great concern, any change in policy that would impact trade between the two countries and reduce American Investment were going to get the view of this from france now with our correspondent who covers foreign affairs, the french news magazine, joining us from paris. Thank you so much for your time. As you may have heard, the political leader there Marine Le Pen tweeted out this last week that might not be surprising for people who know him. What do you see common prethe donald trump phenomenon and le penn . The support comes from the founding father of the national front. So not from the current president of the same Political Party. They havent heard last year in a very, very conflictual relationship the. The support of the father is something of an embarrassment for the daughter because she needs to enlarge her political basis. He as the founder just wants to insist on his ideological motivations. I believe that le pe, nn sees donald trump as something of his american nephew. If we look at the common grounds, common roots, you have the same contempt and suspicion towards the political elite, towards the Mainstream Media and a certain passion for conspiracy theories, plus probably nostalgia for probably fanta skshgs ize fantasized golden era. She appears socialist. If she wants to have a dhans one day to enter the presidency here in paris, she needs to get voters from all sides after the attacks in paris is when donald trump in this country really started to gain momentum. There was also the shootings in this country in san ber shall nardino. Have you seen in your country fear of zen phobia in light of the attacks . It is clear that there is sharp awareness of the necessity of strengthening the Security Apparatus here in france. At the same time the statements given recently by donald trump have been perceived as just ridiculous. Saying, for example, had he been at the bataclan, where you have this terrorist attack last november, he would have reacted and prevented the terrorist to act and so on. This is perceived as lip serious and not very serious. I must say that in the circles, donald trump is perceived as something of a dark clown, very unstable, and his simplistic approach of politics regarding, for example, iran, iraq, syria, the nuclear deal with tehran or the relationship with moscow, are perceived as retrospect annoying for the future just to clarify, what donald trump said specifically about the bataclan theater is that all french people should be allowed to carry guns and that that would have stopped the attackers. In britain the parliament has actually debated banning donald trump. It doesnt sound like from your description there is a lot of love lost there between the french and donald trump, but is there such a movement in your country . No. Look, you have, obviously, political margins which try to take profit from such tragedies, but, again, i mean, he is perceived as marginal and he is also seen as the symptom of an ailing democracy. What people think here in general, at least in liberal circumstance r circles, if a big Political Party cannot promote another character than that one in order to get access to the white house, there may be a problem somewhere. The last detail i would like to put in our conversation is that i think that a comparison with the former Prime Minister of italy may be a little more relevant than comparison with le penn when you look at both the statements and the obsessions also the obsession with their hair and their tans, i suppose. Other people have made that comparison. Exactly all right. Thank you. We have leave it there. Yes go ahead. I just wanted to ironically add something very short, and there was a common points between le penn and donald trump. It is their hairstyle and the way they cultivate their lock of hair which seems important to them. Again, as we are talking about hairstyle obsession, you know that le penn had another obsession about his hairstyle. Im very ironic saying so, but it means probably something about their egos and their obsesstive egos thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. We appreciate your time when we come back, taking on tackling a major change at practices were going to talk about the use of heroin as medicine. Prescribing the drug and why the number of addicts are slowly growing. These people have decided that today they will be arrested. I know that im being surveilled. Were not quite sure is that an i. E. D. . The candidates will face off depend. He will not attend after landing at the bottom. Meanwhile former republican president ial nominee is to deliver a criticism of donald trump in a speech he will call the front runner a phony and a fraud the north has fired short rage projectiles into the sea. It was in response to recent nuclear test and a long range rocket ge rocket there were calls for swift justice. This case is tin the hands of counter he appeals. Is there a sense in Baltimore Justice delayed in this case is justice denied . I think that the legal system always causes a delay and in many peoples minds, they just feel that that will be a denial. But in reality, this case really has gone rather quickly. I mean i know that may sound strange, but it really has. He died in april. He was charged may 1st. There were many criticisms about the states attorney from charging so swiftly. In reality, many other police cases, they have been in the investigatory stage for over a year. The case has moved rather swiftly. This case was set up almost like dominos. William porter first and procedures were going to use him to testify against the others. Which way are the dominos falling . The state, i think, is on a slippery slope. The dominos are rolling not necessarily in fair their favor any time you have to you have an appeal. The state really didnt anticipate a misstrial. Thats not fast of theirs they wanted the officer to have his trial first and regardless of what happened, whether there was a conviction which they hoped for or an acquittal. He would have been free without any issues of jeopardy or self incriminalnize to testify against the other two officers. Didnt happen, as we know. Once the mistrial occurred, it put them in a limbo land. Dominos are not stacked way they should be stacked in their favor. We are here at the point where the Maryland Court of appeals is going to decide. Any time you have to have an Appellant Court decide, it can go either way. We dont know. The lower courts before this said that porter had to testify. Now, Defense Attorneys are confident that porter is going to on appeal and he wont have to testify. If that happens, what happens to all of the rest of the cases that still have to be tried . Thats a very interesting question. I think if that were to happen, i am not sure how the state would be able to present their case without officer porter. Once the misstrial occutrial oc they need to have reassessed the case, the place they were at at that particular point in time. Things changed drastically. They needed to bite the bullet, so to speak, and just drop the charges against officer porter. Once the charges go away against officer porter, there is no self incrimination issue. He is free to testify just as any other witness testifies. He doesnt need derivative i am community. He doesnt need full immunity. He is free to testify and would have to testify pursuant to a subpoena if they had dropped the charges. The state wanted today have their cake and eat it too, so to speak. They are in a limbo stage where they are facing a possibility they could lose. There are other positions they can take if anything they con tend the case is not over and the cases do not go away, they can go back to what i said they should have done in the beginning, just offer officer porter whats known as transactional immunity, if you will and complete immunity. Drop the charges. However distaftful may be that they may have to do that against him so he will be able to testify against the other officers. He may still have another argument as to why he would not want to do that thats going to be raised with the married port of appeals which has to do with the feds investigating him. He may say even if you had given me full immunity, i dont want to testify because the feds are looking at me. They sat in on my other testimony. I still dont want to testify. That would be what the state would need to do and what i think they should have done all along. All against the backdrop of a mayor race there in more there, debby heinzing thank you very much for being with us today. Investigators looking at a piece of debris that might be from Malaysian Airline flight 370 found along mozambique. Al jazeera gerald tan has more. To date, its the only confirmed evidence of the planes fleet t families have started legal action over the planes disappearance. Straight ahead, marylands highest court takes on the freddy gray case today. A Police Officer could be forced to testify. Justices weigh a texas abortion law critics say has forced several clinics to shut down. 25 years later, the beating of rodney king caught on tape. Maryland highest court will hearacts in the trial of the officers accused of killing freddy gray to decide if William Porter will be forced to testify against his fellow officers. They want him to testify against go goodson and white, both facing manslaughter and assault charges. His attorney argued he cant take the stand while his case is pending. On your world this morning, i talked to baltimore proscutesor debbie heinze. She says the case is in limbo until the appeal is decided. The state, i think, is really now on a slippery slope and the dominos are rolling not necessarily in their favor. Any time you have to have an appeal, but the one thing that happened is the state didnt anticipate a mistrial. Thats really no fault of theirs because miltrials are so rare but they wanted officer to porter to testify to have his trial first and then regardless of what happened, whether there was a conviction, which they hoped for or whether there was an acquittal. He would then have been free without any issues of jeopardize or self incrimination to testify against the other two officers and that didnt happen as we know. So once the mistrial occurred, it put them in kind of a limboland and so the dominos really are not stacked the way they should be stacked in their favor. So, we are here at the point where the Maryland Court of appeals is going to decide. Any time you have to have an Appellate Court decide, it can go either way. So we really dont know. The lower courts before this said porter had to testify. Defense attorneys are confident he will win on appeal an wont have to testify. If that happens, what happens to the rest of the cases that have to be tried . Thats a very interesting question. I think that if that were to happen, i am not sure how the state would be able to present their case without officer porter, but heres the thing that should have probably happened that i have said once a mistrial occurs, my former office, they needed to really have reassessed the case, reassessed the point that they were at at that particular moment to in time. Things have changed drastically. What they needed to do is bite the bullet so to speak and drop the charnz against officer porter. Once the charges go awaynces ag porter. Once the charges go away. He is free to testify just as any other witness testifies. He doesnt need use and deriv tim immunity, if you will immunity. He is free to testify and would have to testify pursuant to a subpoena if they had dropped the charges. But the state wanted to have their cake and eat it, too. So they are in a limo stage where they are facing a possibility they could lose. A decision in porters case could come as sunni as today. Court watchers expect it could take weeks or longer for judges to res off the issues. Outlined in the Supreme Court, the debate over one of the biggest abortion cases in years grew loud. Texas cares about our women. Thats what this is all about. This isnt about increasing Womens Health and safety. Its about putting them in a precarious situation where they dont have access to care. Reporter inside, the debay grew spirited. Conservative justises asked whether a 2013 law is as devastating to Womens Healthcare as abortion providers there say. Liberal just is asked whether the law is even needed. The law requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. It requires clinics to meet costly standards similar to emergency rooms. Supporters say the goal is to protect Womens Health. Critics say its caused half the states clinics to close complicating womens access. There are waiting periods. There are multiple visits that women need to make so that they have to get child care more than once, have to get time off work. There is travel for a lot of people that that can be really complicated. Conservative Justice Samuel alito asked for evidence that the law was to blame for all of the closures saying as to some of them, there is information they closed for reasons that had nothing to do with this law. Liberal justice quizzed the attorney from texas over why the state is regulating abortion more than riskier procedures . She said there are many procedures that are much higher risk. Colon oscopy, lipo success. We could go on and on. You are saying, thats okay. We get to set Higher Standards for abortion. I just want to know why that is. Scott keller later responded legislate temperatures react to topics that are of public concern. The pistol vote is likely to be Justice Anthony kennedy. This morning, a former Catholic Priest in central pennsylvania is beginning a 16year prison term sentenced on wednesday for molesting boys during mishae tripz. The priest was one of several named in a damming report by a grand jury just released on tuesday. It assed thet hiding clergy sex abuse for decades. A state representative in pennsylvania, he was abused by a priest when he was a boy. He joins us from harrisburg. Good morning and thank you for your time. This report says at least 50 priests and our church employees abused hundreds of children over four years and that the bishops covered it up. What accountability can come out of this . There is really only one answer to that, and that we must reform the statute of limitations. Yes must eliminate the civil and criminal statutes and we must open up a twoyear window to give the ability to go to court and have voices heard just like in this, in johnstown, many of these victims will never be able to go to court because of the arbitrary statute of limitation here in pennsylvania. We need to change that. Legal experts, i understand, say one of the reasons for limiting the number of years in which a victim can come forward, the socalled statute of limitations you are talking about is that victims may not remember exactly what happened, the details so many details later. As a victim, yourself, would what would your response to that argument be. That is just bs. That is a smoke screen. Thats just another lie to stop victims from coming forward and telling their stories. Victims dont forget what happened to them. I remember every single day that i go to my bathroom and i go into my shower that i was raped by a priest. Doesnt change. I have talked to other victims, even one woman that was 75 years old who could recount her story of being raped at 15. Victims dont forget. We just want to have our voices heard. There is some opposition to us coming forward. Mainly from the catholic conference. They are the ones that are trying to silence not only victims of priest abuse but victims across the board from all different types of child abuse. Did you try to press charges against your accuser . Unfortunately, i did not. By the time i was able to come forward and talk about it, i was 39yearold, my second childhood friend just committed suicide. What people dont realize when i was sexually abused and raped, the statute of limitations for me in pennsylvania were i only had five years to come forward criminally and two years to come forward civilly. Thats ridiculous. First of all, as a 13, 14yearold, i didnt even know what a limitation was and how was i supposed to come forward by the age of 18 when i couldnt talk about it until my second childhood friend killed himself. That was when i was age 39. So i dont want to hear from the opponents to this type of legislation. They need to get out of the way, and we need to move forward to give haventims their voice. The philadelphia archdiocese went through this same thing in 2005. Your state also had the Jerry Sandusky section abuse casesx a where is the opposition coming from . It is mainly the catholic conference and insurance federation. The catholic conference is spending millions of dollars every year to silence victims. Up here in harrisburg, they do everything they need to do, take out legislators, take them golfing, dinner. They do everything to make sure legislation do not move in the judiciary committees. Its just despicable to me that legislation you are right. How many cases . Three grand jury testimonies in philadelphia. T co sp y, the boy scouts, sandusky. What will it take . You read this report in full from johnstown, you will know why the catholic conference spends millions to block the legislation. It says police and Law Enforcement were also sort of complicit that there was some sort of conspiracy wider than the church. Is that how en flew incial the church still is in central pennsylvania . That to me is just unbelievable. Where else in this country or in this state and i want to kn know do you have a bishop picking the police chief . How could victims ever get justice in johnstown . A victim comes forward to the police chief. What do they do . Call the bishop to come in, say they are going to take care of it, that they are going to send the priest to a rehab center where the rehab center is owned by the Catholic Church so if the priest doesnt admit employment, they put him in the population where he can abuse hundreds more kids. I am going to be calling on the attorney general of pennsylvania to investigate every diocese in the state of pennsylvania. We need to have an answer if this was rampant and from what i am hear eg from victims reaching out to me, this is. You have reason to believe that further investigation will uncover more cases of sexual abuse in other diocese in your state . Absolutely. There is no doubt about it. I have had victims reach out to me from my home diocese, the pittsburgh diocese. In fact, a lot of cases from the pittsburgh diocese. I dont know how they got we havent investigated them yet. We need to do that we need to go to every one of these places, open up the secret archives and look and see what happened. We cant, you know, one thing we know is if we look at this information, we can correct things moving forward but we need to hold these bishops and the institutions accountable for the crimes that they have committed and covered up. Mark rosia, state representative from pennsylvania, thank you so much for sharing your story and your time this morning. Thank you, stephanie knee.
