Beatification of archbishop oscar romero, who was shot dead 35 years ago. Plus. [ singing ] somecontests prepare to kick off in front of thousands of fans. Hello, iraqi forces and u. S. Led coalition have started their fight against the Islamic State in iraq and the levant in anbar province. Coalition airstrikes targeted on vehicles near the the provincial capital of ramadi. Losing control of that town would allow isil to link ramadi with fallujah and be within striking distance of baghdad. There has been progress for Islamic State in iraq and the levant. Shia militiamen as well as iraqi soldiers have recaptured the town. Theyve pushed isil out of that town, which is seven kilometers from ramadi, the provincial capital of anbar. The iraqi forces were sent to the area to stop isil from advancing further. Isil has managed to take towns and cities and excuse me, towns and villages since it captured ramadi on sunday. The capture ofthe aim is to protect the military base, which was really under threat just earlier today. The base is the staging ground for the governments counter offensive against isil in anbar province. They discussed the military plans to be put in base there but even before that the base was under threat. We are now the front line. They have tried to breach the offenses but our brave soldiers are repelling them. We are determined to recapture anbar soon. But before doing that the government needs to maintain its defense line just a few kilometers from the base. Shia military forces have moved into this area to stop isils advance in the east of ramadi. Isil seems to have a vaty. Losing the base would be a Major Military loss. It has been under isil control since january 2014, all that would make the armed group closer to baghdad. These men will be leading the fight. The government has failed to bring in sunnies into the official forces. Calls are growing louder for a strategy to fight isil. The only way to stop them is to give them guarantees to sunni tribes. They need to trust the governments promises. Mistrust is deep. Real reconciliation is needed to stop isils gains. The sunnies need to know what will happen after isil is defeat defeated. Sunni leaders opposed to the government. It is a critical time. The iraqs communities need to come together because isil has managed to gain ground by exploiting those differences. Al jazeera baghdad. For more on this now we know now that iraqi troops and shia militia allies are a few kilometers from ramadi. Thats a very significant town. How do you see the battle for anbar in particularly those areas around ramadi unfolding . Well, up to few its not clear. Isis gain has a very big impetus and a push forward. They have regained or strengthened their lives but i think that the main aim of isis is to go to go for fallujah, and they could go to fallujah and they were be in a better position. But they will be prevented from reaching the capital even if they can make that advance. During the last year isis never fought a war. Theyve gained things by simply seeing the iraqi armed force. We have seen that in tikrit, they managed to get back the land from isis in real fighting. So are they going to do the same in anbar . This is to remain to be seen. They are very good at adapting to circumstances on the ground. The u. S. Coalition started their airstrikes. It seemed as though there were gains made on that side. Nevertheless it seems that isil bided its time and managed to hang onto some of the territory it already had and now its using this weaknesses of the Iraqi Government in those areas against it. So what happens now . It starts with the American Air Force and airstrikes never having been successful so far. They have prevented isil from going through some areas. In cobany can kobane and tikrit. Yes in kobane and tikrit. But i think the civilization army you have the tribal fighters once you count on these forces and if they manage to gain the lost lands in anbar that would be a major break through. Just to be Crystal Clear you see the government in baghdad see playing a productive role combined no, no, no. And the sunni the Iraqi Government who leads that process . I think its either the themainly its the leaders or consultants, whatever you call them experts theyre leading theyre the ones driving these people forward. Thank you. Now at least 14 people have been killed and dozens more injured by government shelling in the syrian town. Now the republic of ireland has become the first country in the world to approve samesex marriage by popular vote. 62 had voted yes. [ cheering ] campaigners are jubilant. Its the worlds first vote on the issue. Ive never been happier than i am this day. We did it. Im so proud of this country. Im so proud to be irish. You dont get many times where youre really proud to be irish but this is really one of them. Even before the official declaration it quickly became clear who had won. All the main Political Parties with a yes vote along with big business and celebrities. Im just so proud to be irish today. Its been a very emotional journey for many who have been campaigning on this. And personal stories have been told around the country and on the airways. Between their the time between their wedding and Reception Party they found time to vote. This is just about equality. Nobody told us whether we could or couldnt get married and we feel that everybody should have the same choice. If you want to, you should be able to get married to the person you love like we have today. Not everyone feels the same way. Many still cling to conservative attitudes. But the Catholic Church has been robbed by abuse scandals and its influence a waning, and attitudes are changing. At Dublin Airport irish people flocked home from around the world to vote. My original flight was for tomorrow but i changed it for today. Ireland was the last country in western europe to decriminalize homosexuality just over two decades ago. Opponents of the latest move have raised concerns over surrogates mother for same sex mothers. Its been described as a historic referendum. A huge milestone in a country where religion had has had a huge influence in the lives of people and it was a criminal offense to be gay just two decades ago. How do you feel about the result of this vote and the fact that it took place . I mean, i think its phenomenally moving even from my own perspective. It is such a short period of time since we moved from being a very cold and dark place for our gay and lesbian citizens where we were criminalized and right up until the day we became citizens. I was a criminal of ireland and now im a citizen. Many people have been able to enjoy that in their own lifetime. It is euphoric. Of course youre a supporter of the referendum. You voted in legalizing samesex marriage. Over the years have you struggled to reconcile that with your Catholic Christian identity . I think this has always been a challenge for many people. Ireland is a catholic and christian country. There is no doubt about that. But what weve seen today is the majority of catholics and christians who voted according to their conscience to cherish every individual equally that no life should be forced into invisibility or silence which was the case for far too long. What they did was to make sure that our laws would guarantee that into the future. It looks like the constitution well, but there are other things to consider now. For example, the archbishop of dublin has spoken out. He said this is very much a wakeup call for the Catholic Church. Hes gone so far to say that its a social revolution. How do they deal with this now . I think they need to start listening to their flock. My mother is the choir mistress in her church. She didnt just vote yes she knocked on every door in orvilleage to make sure that people would come out and vote yes. People who were devout christians could see that this was not in conflict with their faith but was compatible with their faith. And the archbishop will have to see how they were so out of step with their own flock on the ground. Do you see the church changing any time soon . Well, yes i mean its been historically against lots of things and things change. I mean, we look at the role of women within the church and how its very slowly improving as well. I think things do change. As science moves and our knowledge as societies move. We realize that gay people are born as lesbians and gay people, and the challenge of any religion government and society is how do you engage with people who are just who they are and should you force them into being invisible . Should you force them into isolation . And stigmatizeization, and for ireland that day is gone. Our lesbian and gay brothers and sisters are full citizens today and it will be a great flight night, and a great season in ireland. I dont see smiles disappearing for a long time to come here. I was a militant. This is where they torture us. When you pass there was a place that was lined with boxes so you couldnt hear the screams from those who were receiving electro shock, torture and being beaten. It was sinister and pathological. Officers would sleep here with their kids and families in the middle of a place where thousands were being tortured and killed. I swore that i would never again enter this place. There was a feeling that something would be done about it after so many years of fighting. For us this is closure. This place being turned into a memory site to me seems really meaningful. This museum and its trials are a reparation, its a social reparation. But to me reparation has two sides. The recovery of the remains of those who disappeared and where kids get their true identity back. Those are the things. If they continue my wounds are healing. Still to come for you this news hour.
