The rest walking wounded, down to the town at 14,000 feet and via larger russian helicopter out and back to catherine the great. Where, as we heard earlier, theres medical facilities are overwhelmed. What about the needs of people in nepal on the ground in the earthquake zone and what about the climbers on the mountain how long will they be able to survive while waiting for help . Base camp is well stocked. They have plenty of food. A lot of tents and sleeping arrangements were wiped away by the avalanche that swept through the camp. They have enough supplies. People are bunking up. Climbers that lost tents are bunking up with people that doesnt. Theres at least five teams above base camp at camps one and two. They reported that they have enough supplies to keep themselves sustained, and that they are not panicking. They have also gone down to check out the route that separates the camp from base one and two. The route is destroyed. Theres no way to get between camp one and base camp on foot. And so the climbers were stranded above the camp will have to wait for a helicopter rescue. For the climbers theres twice as many shep sherpas and guides. What have you heard from their families . The nepalese that contacted their families relaid stories of widespread destruction. I dont think theres a village that are spared. A lot of buildings are built out of quoried stone, one or two stories tall. A lot are damned or destroyed. Thankfully since the earthquake occurred at about noon people are awake and ran from the homes. A lot are small people can exit them. We have nothing hard to go on. Communication is difficult. The buildings took a worse hit than the people, which is a solicitor of good news. Before we let you go the tragedy happening a year to the day that the nepalese perished on the mountain and the avalanche then. How difficult will it be for the people to go forward. Will they think the mountain is not cursed . This is the third year there has been a serious disaster on everest. In this case Mount Everest has a way of bringing more attention to itself than it needs to. I think its important to keep the focus on the tragedy as a whole, and that this is a nation that is in need of rebuilding and needs a Major International aid and relief package to get it on speed. Thank you for joining us via skype. Thank you very much this weekend baltimore seeing a massive and sometimes viability demonstration over the death of freddie gray. He is the young man who died in Police Custody possibly from a severed spine that he kuvered his east suffered during his arrest. This evening the mayor called for calm asking for residents to demonstrate peacefully as the demonstrations continue. We need to support peaceful demonstration, and continue to enforce in our communities that rioting, violence and looting will not be tolerated in the city. Together we can be one baltimore and seek answers as we seek justice, and as we seek peace. Freddie grays funeral was held today. One by one the mourners came. Al jazeera correspondent was outside the funeral home. It was a little more lively in the last few hours. People came out. They have signs urging passing drivers to happening their horns in memory of freddie gray. We talked to a lot of people. Theres a lot of disquiet about the emerging narrative about the protest we have seen. Yesterday, saturday, thousands walked through the streets, we were there, it was mainly peaceful. The Baltimore Police chief said as much. Yet an emerging narrative was propagated that there was mass rioting. That was not true. We talked to a lot of people who say its unfortunate that the narrative has taken hold. Its a multiracial neighbourhood, as with the demonstrations yesterday, we have seen people from all classes and races saying theres something wrong with baltimore policing. Tomorrow is freddie grays funeral. We expect the results of a Police Investigation to be released to local authorities next friday. At least the preliminary results. They say its a mystery as to how freddie gray subpoenaed three cracked neck vertebrae, how his boys box how his voice box was smashed and the spine severed from his neck. Those happening their horns seem honking their horns seem in no doubt that this is a part of a a problem that Baltimore Police have in their conduct towards the black community a trial against james holmes is set to begin tomorrow. He is pleading not guilty which by reason of insanity. Prosecutors say holmes should be put to death a few minutes after the dark night rises begone homes walked into a theatre wearing a gas mask and black body armour. He threw tear gas and opened fire with an ar 15, a shotgun and a pistol. He had plenty of ammunition. It took a second to realise what was going on and people were running away. I hit the ground so i wouldnt be hit. Police were on the scene in less than two minutes, finding holmes in the parking lot standing by his car. He did not resist arrest. He had killed 12 wounded 20 more. During questioning police say homes told them he had booby trapped the apartment. Police used remote controlled robots to get inside where they discovered an arsenal of bombs and chemicals. Make no mistake, this apartment was designed i say, based on everything i have seen to kill whoever entered it. Homes is charged with 140 crimes including multiple counts of first degree murder. Attempted murder and a host of charges. You have a right to remain charges and be advised of the charges. Days after the carnage, homes made an appearance looking dazed and sporting bright orange hair. His lawyer maintains holmes was ill and was in the throws of a psychotic episode when he carried out the attack. We are seeing evidence of calculations and deliberations. The prosecutor is seeking the Death Penalty for the former graduate student. At the time of shooting holmes had withdrawn from colorado. He was into batman and was under the care of a psychologist. In the days leading up to the matter he mailed her a diary. Police say she never received it. It was recovered in the college mail room. Contents from not released to the public, but are expected to be presented to the trial. The trial could last for months. More than 9,000 were considered as jurors. Those selected and alternates are mostly women. Throughout the process victims and family members have been present. Its heartbreaking. Its trying to work through, you know what dash what weve been through, given in respect to we are trying to get through this sayings. Sayings. This case emotional aas we can. Holmess parents asked that their sons life be spared. If the insanity defense does not hold up he could face Death Penalty, he spent the months leading up to the shoot buying chemicals, guns body armour. I hope over the next several days weeks and month, we can reflect on how we can do something about the senseless violent that marrs this country the Clinton Foundation admitting it has made mistakes on how it disclosed information on finances. Coming up on Al Jazeera America more on the effort to prevent thousands of migrants making the dangerous crossing into europe. A look at the role the libyan coast guard plays, straight ahead. Five missing in alabama after weather strikes a sailing contest and we here from John Seigenthaler and ruby bridges role in the Civil Rights Movement. Movement. Indepth reports and investigations. Start weekday mornings with Al Jazeera America. Open your eyes to a world in motion. Fall of saigon, forty years later. We have no idea how many were killed. Unanswered questions, a botched withdrawal lives lost. Examining the impact that still resonates today. A special report starts tuesday, 10 00 eastern. On Al Jazeera America. The European Union says its going to triple its budget to watch the borders. Libyans coast guard says it needs help. Hoda abdelhamid went on patrol looking for migrants in the mediterranean. Reporter its usually around sunset that the coach guard sail off in search of migrants at sea. They are patrolling the ghost line west of the misrata. Translation the same way the European Union assists italy, they should assist us. We dont have the means to deal with this. Their fleet consists of a tug boat they took over and modified for their own purposes. Theres two navy vessels for short patrols. One has a broken engine and no spare parts. The coast guard patrols the coastline. A good number of boats sails. Their duty is to inspect every boat they spot. This one turns out to be a registered fishing boat. The patrol continues into the night. The area that the smugglers boats leave from are open long beaches with no security. They usually sail off at night and no one spots them. The tug boat is slow. The tug boat is slow. Some boats are too far away before they cross into international waters. We cover less than 20 of the coast guard responsibility, and it took 24 hours. We didnt find any migrants at sea. There was information that some had sailed off from libya in the area we patrolled. Thats not only because of the lack of modern equipment, but it seems the smugglers are continuously changing tactics. Since mid april the coast guards rescued about 250 people in this area. They were found in overcrowded dinghies that go undetected by radars. 25 years old, this person was one of them. The man steering the boat was like me, a somali. He wanted to reach europe like the rest of us. He was scared and thats why he ran away. He told us he knew what he was doing. It seems not. The coast guards noticed an emerging pattern lately. In the past they were big boats that carried hundreds of people. Now they put them in rafts, they train two or three passengers on how to use the engine, and show the direction to follow on a compass, and off they go. The summer will see many trying to take a journey, most will sail into high seas undetected the flow of migrants trying search and rescue cruise are looking for five off the coast of alabama. A storm cap sizing dozens of boats. They were taking part in a Dolphin Island race when the storm hit. Two bodies were recovered. 50 rescued from the water by the ghost guard. The storm just subsided enough to keep my head up. Not taking in too much salt water. I had no choice but to hang on to the cushion. I had to find her. This man and his wife were in the water for two hours before being spotted and rescued. That region of the country under threat of severe weather. Kevin corriveau joining us with the weather. Its violent down there. It was an amazing storm. I rolled the radar back so you can see what we are looking at here. Here is Dolphin Island to the south. Ill put that into motion. You can see lets put that into motion. You see how we have seen the wind damaged reports and the storm system pushing out. What we are dealing with is what is happening in texas. Over the last 34 hours there has been a big outbreak of thunder storms making their way to oklahoma to dallas as well. We have seen about eight tornados coming out of the thunder storms. Those are the red dots there, as well as hail. We are talking about golf ball to tennis ball hail in the region. Tomorrow we expect to see more damage in texas. Thank you very much ruby bridges a civil rights icon. In the 1960s, she was one of the first black intig to integrate a white school in the south. She was threatened and cursed. Years later her son was shot and killed. She sat to talk to John Seigenthaler rubys journey remembered in this painting. You became the face of immigration. Did you see this . I did not see that until i was about 17 or 18. But, you know my child psychologist, dr robert coles, was friends with norman rockwell. And so he did this one and a few other pieces. But this was, i think one. First. When her psychologist published a Childrens Book about her story, bridges found hers back in the spotlight and it caught the attention of a sculptor who included bridges face on the remember them monument in Oakland California commemorating civil rights heroes around the world. How do you see yourself history . Clearly this artist and the people in this community see you among the greats. How do you see yourself . I dont she myself as a hero, i see myself as a role model. Bridges says racism and violence are real problems today. In 2010 her eldest son was gunned down in new orleans. He was 17 years old. We are being divided. There is an us and a them. What is dividing us is good and evil. Evil stood over my child and shot him. Evil comes into our schools, and evil looks like you and me. So does good. Good looks like you and me. So when you look at what is going on in the country today and thing about ferguson, missouri and other places across the country where theres cries about race. And how far we have come along. What do you say about that, and how far we have come along. How faff, amazing. We have come a long way. When i think about ferguson. You are speaking to a parent that lost a child to violence. By the hands of someone that looked like him. I think once obama was elected, it was like taking gasoline and pouring it on to a fire. Racism just bubbled up buns he was elected. He made the progress, you know it was like two steps forward, three back. Its like living through the Civil Rights Movement all over again. Today at 60 bridges travels to schools across the country teaching students about the importance of tal rons. Tolerance. You know about forgiving. Yes. You have to put it behind you. You dedicated your life to kids and schoolchildren and schools, why . Because i remember. I remember what it was like sitting in the classroom. I know what it felt like when the little boy said i cant play with you. And he didnt know. And i see so many kids that are struggling. I can see the pain in their eyes sometimes. Yesterday i was in california visiting a school a little boy looked at me and said ive been bullied, ive been beaten up, bleeding. I know what that is like. Among the top honours received over the years, bridges says she is proud of this. Its like these are all of my kids. Its like coming home. The ruby Bridges Elementary School in california. More than 40 years after being threatened bullied and cursed for going to school, this school now bears her name. What is it like when you come into a school like this . The school named after you. And you see the kids and you think about when you were in school. Is it what is that like for you. Coming here is amazing. Im in school every day. I travel across the country and speak to kids. Kids are excited, they know that im coming. Do you feel that its important to educate the students about what happened to you. Absolutely i do. And i do feel a sense of responsibility to share my story and explain to them that racism has no place in the hearts and minds of kids that its adults that pass it on. I believe if we are to get past racial difference it will come from the kids. Since my experience is that other child, i choose to work with kids. Guys im going to leave, im saying goodbye, okay. Coming up in the week ahead there are several key issues for japan and the u. S. To work out. Including americans in japan, and chinas growing dominance in asia we discuss it in depth next. Welcome back to Al Jazeera America. Here is a look at the top stories, a massive relief effort tore victims in nepal. More than 2,500 confirmed dead. That number is to rise. U. N. Japanese Prime Minister shinzo abe will attend for a visit. He is expected to address a joint session of congress on wednesday. Mike viqueira has more than shinzo abes visit. Reporter Prime Minister shinzo abe arrives in washington for a 3day state visit. Behind the pomp and ceremony including a formal welcome, state dinner and speech to congress, theres a host of issues on the agenda. First, trade. The u. S. And japan haggle for Market Access for u. S. Products especially in agriculture and auto. Now they are closer than ever. Part of a 12 nation deal the Transpacific Partnership, or t. P. P. Opening markets across asia pacific. Potential stumbling blocks opposition at home to president obama, for members of his own party, democrats proposed for a deal. The talks focus on asia pacific security. Chinas power is rising. Theres a dispute between china and japan. Over a set of islands in the east nina ski. They are angry over what they say is his desire to play down the actions of the army especially over the issue of the comfort women. Therell be a media event on monday when top officials sign a deal with japan, where they agree to take a bigger role in providing for selfdefence. They visit boston San Francisco and los angeles during the visit to the United States. Now, shinzo abes visit comes on the heels of the asia africa summit. Much was symbolic. Some admitted to political power and all things emarriaging. As mike emerging. Relations have wavered. Shinzo abe drawing criticism, after sending an offering to a shrine honouring the war dead. Shinzo abe met with the chinese president in a bid to smooth it over. The next day three cabinet ministers went to the same shrine. Japan has yet to say whether it will join chinas investment bank. China is using its reserves to build an alternative to the i mf. More than 50 nations joined despite pressure from the u. S. Not to do so. Lets bring in Tobias Harris from washington d. C. And from dallas an associate professor and director of the sun and Star Programme at smu. Mr harris caroline kennedy, the u. S. Ambassador to japan says this is the issue that the u. S. Should focus on she says its big are than russia the issues in the middle east. Why does she feel strongly about the issue of japaneseamerican relations. Obviously when you look at u. S. Partners in east asia we have allies in south korea, and the philippines, but japan is the richest most capable ally that the United States has. Its a strong relationship that goes back the same way. When you look at a changing threat and figure out what kind of country china has been in the future any role for the u. S. In the region depends upon it needing a close relationship between the u. S. And japan going forward. Sorry go ahead. No no, no ambassador kennedy is right on that point. Do you concur is this bigger than the issue of russia and ukraine and the ongoing crisis in the middle east . Yes, i agree. China asks its a longterm issue, and this is the fundamental trend of international politics. How to manage china is an important issue for the United States Foreign Policy and to manage china, japan is important. Increasing importance of china has made japan more important for the United States not less important. Is there a concern that it may look like its the United States and japan versus china as opposed to it being the United States, japan and china . Well, im not worried about it. U. S. And japan are in the same side in many things. It doesnt mean that they are excluding china. U. S. Japan, china, they are trading with each other. They are the biggest trading partner for each other, except for the United States. In that sense, u. S. China and japan, the countries are sharing the interest. Its very different from a case when u. S. Had to deal with soviet union during the cold war. The u. S. Relationship is different to the soviet relation. Stand by. U. S. Military presence in japan, that expanded after world war ii. Right now there are eight bases housing 50,000 active duty members. The largest base is on the island of okay jib awe weigh okinawa. Harry fawcett has that story. Its a standoff on okinawas bay. On one side the protesters trying to stop the construction of a u. S. Marine air feel. Field. On the other of the japanese coast guard. The stakes have risen in a battle lasting 20 years. Translation we now have a governor opposed to this. He was voted in by a huge margin. People are supporting us. Reporter the biggest headache are kayakers they paddle looking for places to cross. This is the sharp end of a campaign to stop the building of the base. These protesters are getting support from okayin awe wans as a whole. The recent elections saw not a single conservative party win. Its a battle between okinawa and the Decision Makers in tokyo. At its heart is a u. S. Base deemed close to civilian buildings, an argument strengthened by a Helicopter Crash in 2004. Japan and the u. S. Agreed to relocate the facility. For Prime Minister shinzo abe honouring the deal is crucial to his desire to be a stronger more active military partner to its ally. The governor insists the new base must be built outside okayin ou weigh, better still, outside japan. The governors supporters are motivated by a mixture of environmental and political reasons, and says its the first time okinawa willingly handed over territory. Translation the governor used clear terms in explaining why okayin awe wans are imposed. And that the japanese government is highhanded in forcing it through. Tokyo overruled a refusal to allow work and the next work is to seize an annulment. Activists continue to slow down the work and draw attention to their fight. Every day they are detained and returned to shore. Every day they come back bap. Back again. So mr harris, to you. The okinawa airfield. The u. S. Wants it a lot on the island do not. Who wins who losses and who talks about it first . At this point governor has a long road ahead of him. The obstacles to stopping the agreement are tough. It points to a bigger issue, not just recording the bases, but the other Security Policies changes that they have in mind. The decision last year on collective selfdefence to allow the military to be involved in defense is not popular now as they go forward to write laws to reflect that. Theres a lot of work on the part of the government to convince the people that it is necessary. Hell come to washington and be greeted warmly for making the changes, at the end of the day in the long term it makes it legitimate at home. We are not at that point. The bases is one expect. As a whole, theres a lot of skepticism about changes the government is introducing. We touched on this briefly a moment ago. How does the u. S. Strengthen military positions in asia without disturbing the sleeping giant, china. Should the u. S. Be worried about china when it comes to the military position in the region. China is not a sleeping giant, its awakened. The issue is how u. S. Manages china. What the u. S. Is saying currently, as people are in asia is not stimulating china, but changing the focus of the u. S. Security strategy from any other region to asia. Asia has been a very stable region for the last few decades. And its because of the u. S. Presence in japan, u. S. Has the most troops, and that is that provides stability of the region. I think its not the counter people in asia its not the change of the policy. An assurance to the commitment of stability. Another hot topic is the t. P. P. How controversial is it. Theres one white house official saying it is more important than a weapon of war. We talk a look at the t. P. P. And the economic ties that bind the u. S. In japan. The Transpacific Partnership is a trade deal encompassing the United States japan and 10 other nations but not china. The proposed trade block accounts for 40 of the outbook. Its a big chunk of the economy. The t. P. P. Is not just about tearing down the trade barriers. The obama is casting the deal as a vital instrument for retaining chinas rising influence. Passing the t b. T. P. P. Is important. Arguing that it would program eat global order. The administration wants to strengthen u. S. Allies including japan, which has a longstanding territorial dispute, including ides in the sea. If it escalates, the u. S. Could get sucked in through military commitments. Beijings rising influence is on display, with more than 50 countries rushing to sign on founding members of a china led Asian Infrastructure Bank Including allies that washington tried to dissuade from joining. For all the arguments. It has plenty of critics who argue it could cost american drugs and depress wages. Some in congress would like to see the deal include punitive measure for currency manipulation where they devalue currency. Japan has been accused of weakening the yen to boost exports. No matter which way you look at it, it will cost american drugs. How does a president campaigning on creating jobs sell a trade deal that will cost jobs . Oath t. P. P. Will cost the job. United states. It may cause the loss of United States job comes mainly from the rising chinese economy. Through that, it has called the lose of american jobs. China is not a part of the t. P. P. The u. S. Jobs are lost because of the rise of the developing countries, especially in china, and the more trade with developing countries like china. But its not directly related to t. P. P. I dont think the t. P. P. Really causes a loss of the job in the United States. Mr harris i go back to a time when the n. A. F. T. A. Free trade agreement was said not to cost american jobs and a president ial Campaign Said there was a giant sucking sound, that jobs were heading jobs. Do you conquer that it will not cost americans jobs . I think until we see the final agreement, its hard to come up with a Firm Statement as to what the Economic Impact is. It will be mixed. Some manufacturing jobs are likely to be hit because you have low cost manufacturing countries like malaysia and vietnam. On the other hand you have a section about rules for investment intellectual Property Protection playing to the strength of american companies. Presumably it will have a boost for jobs at home. Obviously its too early to say what the impact will be like. What you are seeing too is the jobs people on the left in the Democratic Party have memory. I think we are findint that the strategic argument is falling on it is falling on deaf ears. Its worth paying attention to. There is something not falling on deaf ears you mention itted, a lot of it is happening in the back room. Public citizen, a global Watchdog Group rites that the t. P. P. They say it would elevate firms to equal status and powering them enforcing rights and privileges provided by the pack by dragging governments to foreign tribunals to publish policies that they claim frustrates expectationses. Is this a deal that is cut in the dark back rooms of International Governance . That is true that the concept of negotiation is not open and that is not unusual for trade negotiation because you do not want to show strategy to other trading partners. At the same time no t. P. P. Does not solve the problem that we have now. The u. S. Lost some jobs to china, without t. P. P. That is the u. S. Getting back the jobs does the u. S. Get back the jobs . No. We dont know the detailed content of the t. P. P. That is true. But at the same time we dont know about the impact of the t. P. P. Mr harris does the deal give multinational corporations give something that senators like Elizabeth Warren points to things like suing other governments because they are not sure what they will died particularly Climate Change policies. Im an expert in those provisions. Trade experts point out you have a lot of ingredients that include this. There are safeguards in place to prevent multi nationals from abusing the process. The congress currently consideration safeguards to ensure that it would remain for predominance. I think the concerns are real obviously you want you want a trade agreement that works for all the people in the country, not just corporations. I think theres a lot of hype and rhetoric. Its too hard to say one way or the other. A final question. Ill start with you, we have about 30 seconds left. Are we going to look back five years from now and celebrate the t. P. P. Or rue the day it was drafted . Its a tough question to talk about. I hope the t. P. P. Negotiation are le concluded this year, and then. Okay mr harris well give you the last word. So i mean obviously in five years we will not really know what the impacts will be. It will only be implemented over a number of years. I think when it comes to the story of the u. S. Being involved in asia i think we are at the point where if the u. S. Cant finish t. P. P. If we cant get it done there are major questions about the role for the u. S. And asia in the future and in writing the rules. To some extent it is true. The u. S. Has to get it done for that reason alone. Thank you both for being with us. Apologise for the satellite difficulties. Those things happen in live television.
