There are no winners. Thats how president obama described the lastminute agreement that ended the Government Shutdown and presented the prevented going over the debt ceiling. The American People are fed up with washington. At a time when we demand more momentum, we have yet another selfinflicted crisis setting us back. The federal government is returning to business as usual. Vice President Biden greeting workers as they returned to their job this morning. Libby casey is live on capitol hill. What was the tone there this morning . He was certainly not declaring victory and there were no big smiles, dell. Really you heard some frustration. We seem to have lost libby casey on capitol hill. Im checking. The feed is back now. Libby are you there. I am dell. Are you hear me okay . I can. Maybe thats an indication that capitol hill is really quiet right now. But the president s tone was very serious. He was not full of big smiles. This was not a win he said and he had a few different audiences he was speaking to. One was the world, and he said the full faith in credit in the u. S. Remains unquestioned. And the talked for federal workers and said thank you for going unpaid and thank you for some of you who worked without a paycheck, and hat a message to congress, and it was get to work, and get serious. We hear some members pushed for the shutdown say they were doing it to save the American Economy. But nothing has done more to undermine our [ technical difficulties ] hurt the American Economy of course it has also hurt the deficit which is an irony of ironies, since the very members that were talking about their concerns contributed to the show down. And now that the government has reopened, and this threat to our economy is removed, all of us need to stop focusing on the lobbyists, and bloggers, and talking heads on radio, and focus on what the public sent us here to do. The participate was also talking about the legislative priorities that are come ing up. And he talked about Immigration Reform and the farm bill, which is really languishing, so the president said time to get back to work. Dell . And libby the polls seem to indicate the American Public is fed up with both the house and congress and not too happy about the white house either. Are democrats avoiding gloating . They are for the most part. And any that are trying to get a positive spin on this is one of, okay, lets work together, we were able to pass both of those bills through both bodies of congress, but there is no political advantage by gloating at this point, as so many people have had their personal economy harmed. We saw federal workers get back on their jobs today. But there are all of these contractors that are tied to the federal government that wont recoup lost wages, or everyone from the guy who has the hot dog cart to somebody who sells things to tourists, they wont be able to recoup either. And yet there are still a number of republicans who are talking about fighting another day. What are they planning to do . Senator ted cruz got a lot of attention in the last few days, and he has a strong base of support. Its hard to pin down the tea party. We talk about it, but they themselves say were not you dont sign on the dotted line for the tea party, and they havent had an official leader. Well, ted cruz has become the de facto leader of that group. So he feels like he has gotten more momentum going in to the fights ahead. Libby thank you very much. Take a look at these numbers, standards and pours estimates about 1. 5 billion was lost each and every day that the government was shut down. That includes losses in revenue just in the nations parks which were closed. A alone adding up to 1. 2 billion, and with parks and monuments close, americans traveled less. All told a staggering 2. 4 billion lost during the shutdown on travel. Wall street seems to be moving on. The dow is down today. Right now investors are looking at how the government has affected the economy and concerned about corporate earnings, but the nasdaq is showing some gains. John terrett is live at the New York Stock Exchange and how is wall street responding to news of this deal . Well, the dow at the moment is down by about 50 points, as you can see, it has been down for pretty much most of the day after being ahead ahead of the deals being signed yesterday by about 205 points. Im not sure i agree that wall street has been focused. I think thats the point wall street hasnt been focused on what is going on in dc. It has been amazing to see this. We were all expecting a crash as the debt ceiling got closer and closer and it never came, and that was because wall street said we are seeing through your shenanigans, washington, d. C. And they were able to take out the politics from the wider debate and focus on what the real issue always was, and it was always clearly reopening the government, but most urgently getting that debt ceiling raised. And wall street never doubted that the debt ceiling wouldnt be raised. So for me thats the remarkable thing, that wall street completely ignored washington, d. C. , just set it to one side, and to it . Of the opinion that the economists and investors, and Market Makers are of the opinion that maybe the biggest hurdle to sustain and enhance growth in the u. S. Economy are the elected representatives in washington, d. C. , based on the fact we could back here in three months time. A lot of that data that we refer to has been backed up because of the shutdown. When is that going to be released . And how will it effect the ma t mafkt market . Thats a good point. There is no piece of information that is more important in the world than the [ inaudible ]. And in october we were in furlough, so the figures didnt come out, so we dont know what the jobs report was for october. These are numbers geeks here, they love to crunch numbers. So im not sure if we will get a interim figure, or they will dump it into november. I dont know, but you need these numbers to keep you on track, and we have had no october jobs figures, and a raft of other information like inflation, home sales, and auto sales, and all of that stuff which has not come out. Thank you very much, john. 800,000 workers were laid off. If you want to see the ups and downs and how washington effects the economy, you need to look no further than retail. The impasse could effect Consumer Spending during the up coming Holiday Season. Retailers could not be happihapp happier than to have this worked out. Reporter when the Retail Sector sneezes, the rest of the economy can catch a cold. Retailers created nearly 400,000 jobs over the last year aloan. I think retail is the first to feel the effects. Retail is the front line. I think we truly have our finger on the pulse of the economy in general. Reporter but there are concerns that numbers arent looking very strong. Retailers expected to add just 700,000 jobs during the Holiday Season thats down from 750,000 last year. Reporter the International Council of Shopping Centers found that 40 of consumers surveyed scaled back on their spending as a result of the Government Shutdown indirectly or directly. When you see a quick, sharp, and sudden downturn in sales, you know something is going on. Reporter and we all have to pay close attention to anything that impacts Consumer Confidence and spending. Spending on services and goods makes up nearly 70 of total economic growth. And the government is back open for business, but after everything that happened, is anybody feeling confident now about opening up their wallets and spending more money . Maybe in the shortterm, but three things have to be present. First predictability, stability, they have to feel stability about the government and the economy, and a sense of sustainability, meaning they have to feel we have enough money to pay our bills. Those things are really shaken right now. Especially when you see this rhetoric in washington ramp up just as we go into Holiday Season. So to answer your question im not sure.
