What do muslims make of the suggestions . They havent done enough to root out streamists, or bar muslims . Its the inside story. Welcome to inside story, im ray suarez. Sunday night brought this assertion from the american president that muslims cannot deny the fact that extremist ideology has spread into some communities. Normally, that kind of talk would be met with the retort that muslims are not the problem, that many people have worked hard to prevent violate extremism from islam. But knees are not normal days. In San Bernardino, california, in the last several days, it has become commonplace to hear that there is a problem inside of islam, with muslims, and the crime scene is deep thing that conviction. It is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization, calling for islam. Reporter president obama, speaking from the Oval Office Wednesday night, calling for calm in the San Bernardino shooting outrage. The couple who poured to be supporters of isil. Reporter we can not let this fight be defined as between america and islam. Reporter the president s lack of details for fighting iraq and syria, but support here at home. Reporter the ideology has spread in some communities, and this is a problem that muslims must confront without excuse. Muslim leaders here and across the globe must continue to work with us to rejects the hateful ideology of isil. Reporter the man who could be the next chief executive said this. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. Reporter controversial comments followed by thunderous applause. We have to choice. Reporter whats becoming a common theme from the tough talking real estate tycoon. Its going to get worse and worse until were able to determine and understand this problem, and the dangerous threat it poses, our country can not be the victim of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in jihad. Reporter trump has not minced words on the campaign trail. But his latest comments have sparked near universal opposition, from both sides of the aisle in washington to numerous groups around the grob. Mob. Its more like a lynch mob. What was proposed yesterday is not what this party stands for, and more importantly, its for. Donald trump is standing on the platform of hate, and im sorry to say, the hate that the Republican Party has built perfecfor him. Reporter many republicans were quit to criticize obamas speech, and cricker to criticize trumps. Lead. I commend donald trump for standing up and focusing americas attention on the need to secure our borders. Slamming the door this time on the program, perhaps the latest from donald trump has set off a stampede to the microphones. But has it also raised the bar to say whats thinkable . Politics . And should americans be worried when they call for policing inside of a world religion seemed it tame by comparison . The founder ask president of the American Islamic forum for democracy and the author of a battle for islam. And a Senior Correspondent for religion dispatch online communication, and the founder of the islamic coalition. What did you hear from both the president and the leading republican candidate . I think first, thanks for having me, ray, and the president started to make progress, and he started to talk about ideology, and i think that hes giving a cognitive dissonance saying that its not islam, but muslims need to own this. And i will say that we have been too focused on the operational aspects of radicalization, though it takes years, and when they start to get weapons, and when they vanish and become violent jihadis, but it takes years of separatetism. And unfortunately, we as a country have not draine creased the islama patriotism. , so this freighttism which can only be treated with american painttism, and freedom of religion in america, and thats why both countries are in the polls headed the wrong direction. Hillary wants to make us into a mono list, and trump, its a failure in strategy. Has this shown an uncomfortable light on a community that comes from three dozen different countries, speaks many home languages, including native english . Because many of these people are native born, and are we talk about a community because we dont know how else to describe a very Diverse Group of people . There are over 1 billion muslims in the world, and not all of them are radical. But being exploited by republican candidates. And its sad to see the fear mongering thats going on. And hes playing on the fears of americans right after the San Bernardino tragedy. Hes trying to come up with ridiculous, unconstitutional policy which are going to hurt americans. Under that, if i travel outside. U. S. , i cant come back into the country because im a muslim. But juddy just mentioned that leaders are letting us down, and you mention today, and lets talk about the people in the audience cheering when donald trump said what he said. Its South Carolina audience, and there are hardly any muslims in South Carolina. We have a few, because we went there to pay our respects to the victims and the families of the shootings. But obviously, hes playing on people who are not very well versed on foreign policies, especially in South Carolina. In north carolina, this year, we had three young Muslim Students shot to death because of the hateful ideology and the big on bigotry against Muslim Americans, and similarly, what happened last week in San Bernardino, one of them was born and raised here, being radicalized and going against his own coworkers, both stem from extremism. One was christian, and one was muslim. And we need to tart the extremist elements of both. Were dealing with a it situation where even people of good will, who are watching all of this play out in paris, in london, on the tube just in the past couple of days, in San Bernardino, i think it sounds like a pretty similar set of m. O. S, of assailants, the problem coming from one source, even if theyre smart enough and sophisticated enough to say, oh, i realize its not all muslims, but it seems like a lot of the ones doing it are muslims. How do you piece that apart in a way that makes sense. First of all, thanks for having me, and i think that the way to answer that is to try to explain whats happening. There are different areas, theres the islamist nothing wrong, and the violence in the world. And there are the cautious civillingizations, and what we have instead are years and years of bad ideas and failed policies that have led us to this junker. Some of the fault obviously lies in the muslim communities and countries, and in the western communities and countries. We talk about the radical itization of muslims, and the Republican Party has been self radicalizing for years. It has been taken over by the extremists. Were not yet beholden to my Donald Trumps or ben carsons. Openly callerring for killing the terrorists, which is a war crime. And it doesnt mean that islamic extremism isnt a dangerous problem and needs to be confronted on many levels, but the unfortunate reality is we ended up in this position because we failed to talk to each other and understand other, and pursued policies without considering the consequences. It means responsibilities for the muslim communities, and at the political level. Unfortunately, in president obamas speech, we didnt really hear any sense of what he wants to do about this, beyond telling us what hes already doing, which i think for most people clearly is not working. Whats the most effective way forward and the one that lines up with americas most cherished ideals . Stay with us. Its inside story. Water pressure hitting faults and making earthquakes. There were a lot of people that were telling me i need to be careful how i say things. How many lives have to be lost . Faultlines. What do we want . Al jazeera americas hardhitting. Today the will be arrested. Groundbreaking. Theyre firing canisters of gas at us. Emmy awardwinning, investigative series. Youre watching inside story. Im ray suarez. Fbi investigators now say that the california couple, accused of the San Bernardino shootings. Syed farook and tashfeen malik, had long been radical island. Radicalized, honing their skills up until a few days before the attack. And the fbi says at the moment, theres no evidence that the attack was coordinated from outside of the United States. That turns attention and suspicion on the millions of muslims already living in the United States in a way that cant be comfortable. Empowering those ready to insist theres a growing enemy within. Slamming the door today on the program, harum and saba. Its tempting to think that theres an easy answer. So in one way, Donald Trumps answer seems easy, and it may satisfaction in that. That theres no outside coordination, that this couple got this notion and pulled it off. We have had 350 plus mass shoot innings the United States this year alone, and not everyone was radicalized islam. We had a lot of lone wolf attacks from all over, and im from oregon, and i know in oregon there was a shooting recently that took the lives of many people on a college campus, so we do have a gun culture and serious issues that doesnt happen in the uk, because you cant just get a gun to commit crimes. Its not that easy. But i am a supporter of gun rights, but i think that it needs to be limbed and governed and monitored. And we need to come up with creative solutions, because people becoming radicalized should not have access to weapons and ranges. And we need to see why there are so many Mass Shootings in the u. S. But harum, how do we know who the next person 1 . Is . There are things that we can do, correct gun control is a step. And law enforcement, getting gettinggauged and stagel involved. But there are things that muslims can do. From now on. Moving forward, we can change the way in which we change the leadership and getting muslims to be involved in the societies. First of all, teaching them about the pluralism misdemeanors and outside of the tradition. And teaching them to channel their fears. So if a young man or woman is upset about palestine or what theyre seeing in syria, were citizens of the United States, and we have the ability to be involved. And we need to it model forms of engagement, saying that you can move forward. And finally, to couple that with the extremism is not just morally vile, but its strategically selfdefeating. What are they accomplishing for the muslim world . More it death, more destruction, and the people are less free than before. And its worse. The extremists have basically offered the only narratives. And we need to say that theyre wrong and we have better narratives. When donald trump said that closing the doors to the muslims might be justified by the current fights around the world, his audiences cheered. Are americans willing to give up long cherished freedoms to slam the door . Stay with us, its inside story. Welcome back to inside story. Im ray suarez. The idea that a continent sized country of more than 300 Million People has been brought to its knees by two murderers, shows the power and the logic behind terror attacks. Theyre meant to sow fear and suspicion, and pushing an opponent to lash out. Its not clear how barring muslims from the United States could work, and its clear that it would never really happen. But the suggestion should have Muslim Americans thinking deeply about the lives they lead and their future in this country. Sudi, if youre a Water Quality engineer in georgia, or a housewife in california, what do you do . Youre going doing your own life, and doing the things that you do. So you say, well this doesnt have anything directly to do with me. But i still feelle called upon in some sense to explain something to somebody, and what . Well, listening to my colleagues here, theyre exemptfying in some ways that america has had a hunger for voices about islam that are about reform, and own us and want to take responsibility. But yet im hearing about gun control and shootings. The bottom line, muslims may only be 1 of the population, but to that carpenter and engineer, we just signed a muslim reform, that starts with large movements in arabic, these islamic movements, muslim brotherhood, and haram, and saudi arabia, hundreds of millions of people are moving movements that are separatist and antiwestern and antisemitic. And until we start countering that, our declaration that says we believe against any jihad, we reject all califate states, and muslims that dont believe this these and are willing to condemn islamism are part of the problem. You signed the declaration, and it completely comports with american values, and next week, and the week after, and the week after that, there will be americans quoted in papers, and youll see them speaking on television, and they will say how come muslims are not speaking out against this kind of thing . Does it make you a little crazy . You think you are, and you think that all of other signatories to this declaration are. We need to take that declaration to the mosque. We talk it to the mosque owned by the saudis, and we took it to the mosque in northern virginia, and they it sort of rip today off. And we want to know who is working for solutions against that separatist ideology against islamism, and who is working for slugs. Solutions. The bottom line, i would tell awful your viewers, and your muslim friends what they believe about this declaration of the muslim movement. Because radicalization is not just the last moments when they start getting weapons and become operationallized. We have very little time left. And i want to hear final comments by you both if thats enough, or if theres already a narrative in place that muslims arent doing enough that are imperious to suggesting. In the last 24 hours, we launched a program to raise money for the victims of the San Bernardino attack, and we were hosted by the largest gathering to discuss our experiences, and the largest north American Organization that exists, and obviously, this organization has not only endorsed that, but they have elected a female president twice, two terms, and looking at signing declarings but we dont need to sign declarations to know what we stand for. Were americans and we dont need to write that down to know who we are. I agree with that. And this is the first time that im hearing about his declaration, but i recommend mailing out a copy of it to the 2200 plus mosques around the United States, but we have a lot of work to do in terms of defending our communities and our religion in this country. Its under attack from all sides, and unless a lot of responsibility. When you step up and take responsibility. And there will be those americans who say you arent doing anything. And is it frustrating . Yes, very frustrating. As a republican, its very frustrating. But we have a year to go before the next president ial election, and muslims, any time they get out of the race, so were very positive that american muslims have a Bright Future ahead. I want to thank my guests, saba, the founder of the muslim coalition, and the american democracy, and haran mogul. Ill be back with a final thought on responsibility. Individual and collective. Stay with us. Are there christian, hindu and jewish killers who use political murder to advance their ends . Sure there are, you know there are, but so what . Making that your answer when so much attention is focused on the violent extremism unleashed on syria, indonesia, france, the u. S. , kenya, somalia and egypt and libya has nothing to do with the members of those other faiths. If you tell someone who has little, frustrated, marginalized and at loss ends, you have no idea the humiliation they feel, that killing others will help to turn the tide of centuries, its one that fires up on an auto mechanic in western iraq, a high school it student in minnesota, an army doctor in texas. Fires them up to leave everything, even the lives they struggled to build until that moment and kill for the cause. One of the great ironies that the story of modern religious extremism in the United States is that muslims in the United States are well educated, materially successful strivers, whose achievements compare favorably with many other immigrant groups. Many came here to it escape authorrertarian governments, and lack of personal freedoms, and opportunity that they found at home. And now their fellow americans are accusing them of trying to bring to america the very things that many were glad to leave behind. I was talking to an imam in tennessee who began to choke up when he talked about the joy of raising his children in a lure risk society, no secret police, and what a tragedy it would be to make his fellow muslims and fellow americans so afraid. Im ray suarez, and thats the inside story. Afghan and pakistan meet to discuss security. Youre watching al jazeera live from doha.
