Boko haram, a video of more than 200 girls kidnapped. He will not let the girls go until incarcerated members of the group are. Let out of custody. We do not recognize the sections of donetske and luhansk. Focus remains on the president ial election. We want to see a democratically. Not going to be an easy rote for michael sam. Every team that passed me i was taking an active quarterback. We begin with the tragedy unfolding in. Boko haram releasing what it claims to be the girls kidnapped in nigeria april the 15th, supposedly sold as slaves. The leader says the group allows the seizing and selling of slaves. These girls will not leave our hands until you release our brothers in prison. We are joined by rawya ragya from abuja. There hearnt been a government speech per say, but independently, one level of government officials saying they are considering all option he but on another level, the minister of the interior maintaining the government line, they will not are negotiating with the people who they describe as terrorists. It took a long time to publicly acknowledge or for the president Goodluck Jonathan to admit. Has anyone in the Nigerian Government been able to confirm that the video actually does show some of the girls who were kidnapped in mid april . No not quite yet. In fact some of the members, the family members we have spoken to, i have spoken to at least two family members who were part of the ongoing protest here in abuja and they told us they were not able to locate their own relatives among the girls who were kidnapped. Appearing on the video. There are some concerns that these may not be the girls of the many there are way too many girls who have appeared on that one video. We have talked to the Education Minister of borno state, he told us they called in some of the girls managed to escape from the captivity to credit identify whether indeed those are the girls or not. After talking to the families and the principal does the government yet have a firm number on the number of girls who were actually kidnapped . Any news on where they think they might be held . Well, all along, this has been a very murky and a very complicated picture, david. What we understand is that there are still more than 270 girls still in captivity. The Nigerian Army says it has sent two Army Divisions on the ground. That essentially amounts to thousands of troops on the ground in borno state, searching for these girls, the Nigerian Affairs ha air force has also bn involved. The Border Patrol has stepped up its patrols on the border. But even with that heightened presence of Nigerian Forces on the ground with the involvement now of International Law enforcement experts from the united states, britain and even israel offering to send experts, with all of that boko haram just does not seem to be faced with any of that. And even in the past few days we have seen renewed attacks by the groups. They have bombed a bridge leading into the cameroon along the border, they have continued their rampage. So it does not seem to be a group that is faced with any of that pressure or Security Forces. So far there hasnt been any indication that those search and rescue efforts have yield any results. As far as the military is concerned they say they are not going to be providing running commentary on how they are going along with those efforts. Al jazeera are correspondent rawya rageh thank you rawya. You write that the boko haram leader threatened mass kidnapping of women and children in march. The government didnt take that very seriously. How come . I guess its probably because boko haram and its leader has made all kinds of wild threats. Can and warnings in the past. Some of which it simply wasnt able to carry out. And so its likely that the government authorities simply thought it was one of the very many threats that would come to nothing. What do you make of the video that boko haram purportedly released some of the girls who were kidnapped in mid april . I mean its difficult to verify or ascribe credibility to some of the videos that are released. Because one, their sources cannot be ascertained and even though we kind of regularly see this kind of people, these same individuals taking these words, sometimes its difficult to tell whether this is really boko haram or someone else issuing some of these things. But certainly i think from experience they would be wise to take some of the words to heart and to take action with regards to providing heightened protection for all the people that have been mentioned in that video. And to use that described wroaz fo video for are location or elsewhere. Boko haram as Human Rights Watch has noted has abducted girls before. There are also been case where some of the girls have managed to escape. Do we know how those girls in particular managed to get away . Some of the girls were actually rescued by Security Forces during attacks, during raids on boko haram camps. Human rights watch was able to speak abou with members of the l Vigilant Group who had worked with the Security Forces on the raid on those camps and they described seeing the girls abandoned in the camp, pregnant or with very young babies, when boko haram members fled the raids by Security Forces. And also, while were able to document that some of the girls simply wandered back and from those that we interviewed, they were able to get really, because its a guess, that boko haram simply tired of the girls when they got pregnant or when they were with babies and they were no longer of use to them and they simply allowed them to walk away. You mention the nigerian Security Forces. How would you describe them and how would you describe those Security Forces in terms of their human rights record in the fight with boko haram . Human rights watch and certainly the other International Human rights organizations have been able to document several allegations of vials of human rights by nigerias Security Forces from discriminate and arbitrary arrest, the excessive use of force on civilian population, prolonged detention and disappearances of those who have been sentenced to have been arrested by Security Forces more than one year, two years, afterwards their family members have never heard anything back from them. Also able to document from those who had been in detention, in military detention and had subsequent been released subsequently released, how there had been extra judicial killings going on, around the time the state of emergency was declared. Do you believe the Nigerian Government circulate go ahead and can speak with boko haram . They should release the girls unconditionally. Certainly the government has to take that very difficult position on whether to accept this offer or to ignore it as theyve been saying, that ss unacceptable to them. Malsi shegun from abuja. Thank you for coming on the program, we appreciate it. Prorussian separatists in donetske, while separatists in luhansk declared independence from ukraine. Overwhelming majorities spent their call for some form of self rule. Russia has only said it respects the will of the voters and peace should be reached between dialogue with the separatists and ukrainian officials. Alexander turchof called the are referendum an insult. Mr. Shevchenko, thank you for being with us. Is ukraine closer to open civil war . Since weve seen sundays vote . I think we have here sorrow for people who die every day in the east. Some of them die with terrible deaths, being tortured or being cut by knives or being shut in front of the eyes of their relatives and sometimes, this happen only because people speak ukrainian or they show loyalty to kyiv. That is my feeling. It has nothing to do with peace, nothing to do with the situation improving. And i think russia is to be responsible for all what we see. There in the east of ukraine. As far as russias responsibilities so far, so far russia has not said it will recognize the results of the vote in are donetske and luhansk, and should be resolved between dialogue with kyiv and the separatists, is that better than what they did in crimea . I think its too difficult to talk about anything about referendum in the east. Think about the Eastern Region of ukraine. It is a territory with the size of hungary or any other Central European country. Could we serials talk that several thousands of people or terrorists can speak on behalf of the whole region . I think most of the ukrainians understand that a National Referendum could be a good solution for solving Many Political issues. But it should be done in a legal way, in a proper way, with and without people who carry kalashnikovs in the cities of eastern ukraine. They were not carrying guns, not terrorists, were simply prorussian separatists who want to be aligned with russia, doesnt want to have it done violently. Not everybody who voted sunday was a terrorist right . Lets speak numbers, one of the cities strong host of credit separatists, is a city of six or 700,000 people who live there, polling stations. Is it the proper way to represent the way the people feel there . My feeling is people are really horrified with all the events happening there. They want to get all the armed people away from the streets and then they will have the chance for dialogue. Its a good time to consider distribution of powers between kyiv and the local complunts. I think everyone. Ukraine is ready for that. We are ready do grant all the possible necessary things for those who speak russian language but the proper way to approach that is to get those armed people away from the streets and for russia its really important to stand that it is absolutely clear for everyone in ukraine that russia is standing behind these terrorist attacks and its not the way to build relations between the countries. President terchof says kyiv will only speak to are separatists who have no are blood on their hands. The dialogue with the separatists possible at this stage . I think its absolutely possible to have a dialogue with the communities of donetske, are slovyansk, and the other communities. We should not have any dialogue with those people who are clearly responsible for murders and for torture. There are not that many of them and we know clearly most of them. If we want to dialogue we should identify who to talk with and one key thing we should agree on that we have to respect borders, we have to respect the borders between the countries. Otherwise i think at least the modern world in the 21st century into nowhere. The Ukrainian Army stepped up some more aggressive contaminate ticks towards the russian separatists about ten days ago. There was some armed conflict. Due believe that the Ukrainian Army should ratchet it up even further, become more difficult with the russian separatists now that this vote has happened, now that you say get these armed men off the streets . As everyone can tell the Ukrainian Police officers and all those Army Officers who are involved they are extremely cautious about acting in the populated areas. So thats actually the only reason why this crisis has been not sold by force for many weeks. And i think its very proper way to address this issue, we know that many people who are enemies of ukraine would like to see can rivers of blood gs going down the cities of ukraine. They are our citizens. The they are our brothers and sisters and they think our police and our army should be extremely carefully with all our action he. Yes, we see more activity but you could say its more aggressive activities but its still very cautious steps put but we want to make sure not a single credit peaceful and lawful person gets hurt by these action he. Looking forward theres another election coming up on may the 25th. Do you believe that this sort of series of discussions or negotiations can happen between now and then aand how do you see the election playing out in two weeks . Well, im also sure that we are capable of holding free and fair election. The first round of that will take place on the 25th of may and i think well hear some more good news here in this country. Tomorrow we expect the European Union to formalize the decision, which 1 billion euros of Financial Assistance to ukraine. We also are consider some good news like this will come more and more and see more stability and peace in ukraine. I think in this country after all that happened here in the streets of kyiv what happened in the east really deserves to live in peace and really deserves to decide for itself it its future without military interfreerns interspheerninterference from i. Cannian candidate abdul fatah alsisi said sunday he will step down if his presidency sparks mass protest. For more well were joined by, served as director of research as the brookings doha center. Credit shadi lets start with general alsisi. Hes he rarely speaks to the press. He said he would step down if there were protests during his presidency but he has all but banned them. Were seeing some credit contradictions in a. M. Si sisas statements. He is saying hell respect the will of the people if they protest against him and hell resign. Obviously those two things dont go together and there are other examples of this. He says hes willing to accept criticism but not quote unquote offensive criticism. What egyptian journalist is going to want to test that fine distinction . The basic thrust of his comments i think is that he is the stability and security candidate and hell do whatever it takes to ensure stability even if it means more repression, even if it means suppressing any kind of accidentdissent, even mild diss. 53 of the voters between 18 and 40. Does general alsisi have any problems with that constituency . Yes, theres a general problem in egypt with youth disenchancement with the political process. You have the revolutions who were participating in january 2011 and many supported the coup in july 2013. But a growing number of them have realized that things have not gotten better and they have also been the target of repression. Its gone beyond the Muslim Brotherhood and other muslim groups and you have other youth revolutionaries who have been the symbol of credit are dissent ahmed maher who is now in prison. The mast protests against did brotherhood, what does why general alsisi actually stand for . I guess that is the big question now that a lot of people are wondering about. Sisi is the kind of populist in the broad vein. His economic policies are quite generic. Who after all isnt for fighting poverty and unemployment . He hasnt gone into detail on how he plans to fix the economy. What we can tell is hes very much a statist. He believes in state intervention in the economy. He believes in a strong economy. Theres nothing to suggest that he wants to let the private sector flourish or anything like that. You about evere but by and but by and large were talking about a pretty vac you aous political standing. One of his Campaign Managers said quite recently, there are so many details in his Political Program that it would take a year to describe them to the egyptian people which is just incredible that someone would say that. But i mean well just have to wait and see if hes willing to delve into that a little bit more. Its incredible someone whos essentially about ready to win this election, the press and freedom in egypt, we dont want you to cover unless we say its okay. How does that go over at this point in time . What we have to understand about are sisi he is drawing on a mood in egypt that actually supports repression of the Muslim Brotherhood. To make egypt stable, whatever the cost. Its not like under the mubarak regime, people werent that excited about mubarak one way or the other. We have millions of egyptians we can disagree are exactly, who passionately why support sisi. He believes in a repressive course but he is also responding to his popular base which wants him to be very aggressive. So shadi what do you think is going to happen to the prisoners the al jazeera journalists, any chance of a good faith gesture if and when sisi wins this election . I marine, i think were i mean i think were all hoping for that but there havent been a lot of positive signs in that direction. I mean there was hope that you know when sisi started running for office he started feel more secure he would start to ease up on the repression and have more of a tone of conciliation. But he seems to be can more harsh, the brotherhood will cease to exist if im elected. There is no sign of reconciliation. I think a lot of it will depend on the degree of international condemnation. International pressure. I mean once sisi gets elected is the u. S. Or the European Union going to prioritize these issues, particularly when it comes to detainees and say listen were not going to expect you to be democratic overnight, we know you wont become democratic overnight but at least you can are release some people as a sign of good faith. I hope theres a pressure to that effect. Thank you so much for your time knit. My pleasure. Thanks for having me. Now to the political battle over the keystone pipeline. Some of the pipeline has already been built, and according to the polls, twothirds of the are extension of. Haters and supporters say the pipeline will create jobs. Uncomfortable divisions in advance of the mid term elections, some Senate Democrats support the project and want to vote so they can go on the record on it this fall. But the Obama Administration has avoided making any decision he on it until after the november mid terms. There are indications that president obama will oppose the project. Joining me now to discuss the politics of keystone is darren good. Nice of you to join us tonight. Senate republicans blocked Bipartisan Energy legislation, denying the vote. Tell us what the shock waves were within the energy industry, given the thought three did not feel this would be controversial. They didnt feel the efficiency bill would be controversial, it really isnt, its widely supported. But they were locked over trying to get votes for Republican Energy amendments including on keystone. This kind of came to radio head last week, nard reid offered republicans a chance to vote on keystone as a stand alone vote if this Energy Efficiency bill passed without republicans being allowed to offer any other amendments. Republicans said well, no, we dont want to do that. This is going to be last energy bill before the mid alternative elections, we want do offer up some influence amendments, opposing epa gas restrictions, even a carbon tax which isnt very popular. Senator reid said no amendments but well get give you a chance to vote on keystone as a tan stand stand loan. But these kind of bills fall apart because neither leader wants to negotiate very much. So any bill that does have bipartisan support, supported by republican portman of ohio and gene she heen of New Hampshire neheen ever New Hampshire, thatt compared to the jobs the economy is creating. How did this become such a big deal . Its a one sided issue about the future of the current. Do you want to start importing more oil and especially this kind of heavy crude oil that keystone would carry which environmental is proclaimed as being very heavy on causing Climate Change emissions. On the other hand, theres that symbolism where look, we still need to import oil we might as well import from a Friendly Neighbor like capped. And it just canada. It became more symbolic than substantive, actually. The environmental impacts probably not as severe as some would claiming, the employment issues thought as severe as some would claim. The oil and gas industry plays very heavy there. Senator landrieu cosponsored the bill, the bill that didnt get a vote because of the fallout of the efficiency demise. Shes being blamed by republicans, being powerless despite her ascending to the chairmanship of the Energy Committee recently. Its become a very high profile issue even though the substance may not necessarily back up the politics. And in addition to senator landriu, begging harry reid to make sure the senate has a vote. How important would it be for these vulnerable democrats if they cannot get a vote on keystone before the election . I think for senator landrieu, she was the very first person to speak on the senate floor and she spoke for quite a few minutes blaming republicans for the impasse. Its a pretty big issue for her and her race especially given the fact shes touting her chairmanship of the senate Energy Committee. The republicans saying youre still powerless. For people like senator pryor, less of an issue, obamacare and some other issues probably play more heavily in arkansas. But you did see several vulnerable Senate Democrats and some politically red sedates like senator landrieu, displart pryor, senator begich in alaska, all of them signed a letter to the president , saying look, we need to build this thing, its really important. All of them were cosponsors on that keystone bill. The politics are acute enough certainly for them to make sure theyre on that letter, theyre on that bill. But the fact they didnt have a vote on it, again i think senator landreu it dpeacts her a little bit. Lets put the politics aside for keystone for a second. The american effects could you synthesize what those would be . A pipeline thats going to send about 700,000 barrels per day, its already you have that southern leg of the pipeline thats already being built. That basically is to relieve a glut of oil built up in curbing oklahoma where they have those tanks sitting there. The southern leg of the pipeline was meant to relieve that. That is going to get more oil out to the coast which actually it probably will help them a little bit as far as pricing is concerned. Gasoline prices are going to be affected a little bit in the midwest. Bought the midwest has been able to get pretty cheap oil that hasnt really gone anywhere. Keystone is meant to provide a little bit more oil through that pipeline to get through to the u. S. Refineries, some claim to get that oil exported. That could have a minimal effect on gasoline prices. America we still need to use oil, were not quite there yet on some of these other Renewable Fuels and other alternatives. I think its more politics than anything perhaps. So i think the hit on gasoline prices, the hit on the consumer not that huge. And as you mentioned on the job front, were talking about some, a few thousand short term jobs and maybe some other jobs that would be impacted in the longer term. The jobs issue is kind of debatable too, right . I think its definitely more politics than anything else. Im with you, darren gude is the senior Political Editor for money magazine. Thank you. Data from recent years suggested that changing diapers didnt leave much time for adults to enjoy themselves. The increasing happiness of parents shows that while the level with kids is the same as it was in the 80s everybody elses happiness has dropped. In other words, people without kids these days are crankier. John ipshire joins us from mountain view, california. The study shows that parenting makes parents as happy as it ever did and nonparents are grouchier than ever. How did you come to that conclusion . Historically the research has shown that those people who have kids are less happy, but the question we asked, or we considered, was, was this parenthappiness gap change over time . And what we found is it was. As you stated in the intro the nonparents were becoming less happy while the parents were staying about the same. So relatively parents are getting happier since about 1980 to today. You apparently came into some inconsistencies on some of the prior work on this, including the definition parents. Explain that. Yes, most of the Prior Research includes anyone who said youve had a child. Perhaps if you have had a child maybe that child isnt living with you or you have lost custody of that child. That doesnt indicate whether you are actively parenting a child. But people zero to 17, actually living in their household. Were you surprised by the research, the parentss level of happiness didnt change at all, easier than say parents 30 years ago . Yeah i mean, what our Research Shows is the parents relatively are getting happier. Youre asking why is this happening . Theres a lot of different potential stories and were thinking about those for future research to look more closely. But as you mentioned one thing perhaps technology is make parenting easier, another thing we considered is a book called bowling alone which talks about the 48ing of communities in the u. S. And the loss of social connections, as happiness researchers we know that social connection is are hurnlgly important to peoples happiness and Parents Community was diminishing more than nonparents. Parents were more likely to stay connected to their communities and we think thats one of the potential explanations for why parents are not become unhappy like nonparents. In my case for example, taking the 11 month old into gym and swim class, you develop a social connection that you wouldnt otherwise . Exactly. A lot of the friends i have today are really the parents of my kids friends, you know. Im a parent also and a lot of my social connections keeps it vital. You cant parent alone. You cant parent in isolation. You have to interact on lots of different dimensions whether its in swim class in school get parenting advice from friends at work, its just a subjectstarter. We definitely think it keeps people connected. Thats part of the story we think. Does the parenting depend on the age of the children, anyone in the terrible 2s or the rough adolescent years . Or going through one of those phases . Our results show that the increasing parental happiness is as true for people with zero to fiveyearolds as those with older kids. And we also find in the data that those people with two or more kids have as much increasing happiness as those with only one kid. Theres no evidence having fewer kids or older kids increases your happiness relative to those with young kids and those with more kids. Is there a magic number, two kids three kids four kids what is the number in which the happiness starts to decrease again . We didnt find that but we didnt have data on really large family sizes. At some point it says you have four kids and thats it. Any governmental or societal factors that are influence the data in your estimation . We believe tax policy has gotten more favorable, the earned income tax credit has gotten more gow generous so thad the child tax credit, you have to have kids. Thats helped for these tax credits and presumably make you feel better. John ipshire, a professor at santa clara university, thank you for joining. Youre welcome david. The 2014 draft is in the booms and a historical barrier has been broken. Michael sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted into the professional leagues. Michael sam wasnt the only source of controversy in this years drafts. Keep in mind, miami is the same team that got into trouble last year for bullying one of its players. For all the talk about changing the culture, is the league really ready . Miami dolphins chris perkins, a writer for the sun sentinel. There was controversy in the credit draft, mike pouncey, went and said great pick, i cant wait for our gifts, hes getting us, lol, wasnt he implicatein that bullying scandal last year . He was mentioned in that bullying scandal, relinquishie incognito and john jerry. I dont think that mike pouncey is a bad guy but i think he definitely are lacks awareness. Mike pouncey this isnt the first incident for him all season. At a Birthday Party at Miami Beach Night Club he are wore a hat that said, credit are release hernandez. He is being investigate linked to some murders and that was Mike Pounceys team mate at the university of florida. Mike pouncey had that. Then midway through season he got are served with a spean suba related to the Aaron Hernandez case. Then he sent the ill advised tweet, i think it was an attempt at humor that went very wrong that lacked awareness. When you are involved in the wells report and the bullying you cannot joke about rooky hazing or anything like that. Mike pounceys twitter account was shut down. As a result of the wales report, mike pouncey last to be cleared by a medical professional before he can take the field. Another black eye for mike pouncey and another for the dol dolphins. Michael sam kissing his boyfriend. Miami defensive back tweeted out omg and horrible. He has since issued an apology statement. What does this say of the Miami Dolphins of all teams should be getting in trouble . Just knuckle head moves by the players. Put it out there nu knuckle head moves by the players. It was three players out of 53 who were deemed to be harassing other people. It didnt spread all throughout the team. The thing with don jones the rookie safety who tweeted out the omg and horrible after the michael sam kiss. That was a fee going all around the team and other responding to it. I dont think theres a culture problem with the dolphins, however i do think in the grand scheme it does affect the attitude with respect to don jones and theres going to probably be some intolerance michael sam is going to have to fight and mike pouncey, when he tweets cant wait to see what gifts were getting. He didnt take the wells report and the hazing and the bullying too seriously. A lack of tolerance and not taking the wells report too seriously i think thats where the problem is with the dolphins. I dont think there is a culture problem where the locker room is like animal house and players are running around crazy but changes need to be made. I know the owner stephen ross has tried to get changes in the management and the team. Doesnt the organization bear some possibility, when these individual players happen to put things on their own twitter page, or Say Something like a knuckle head . Most definitely. The nfl is daig this very, very seriously. Respect is a big theme of the season now. You might recall they were contemplating throwing a penalty if players use the n word on the field. And they later decided they dont need to do that because any such ethnic or racial slurs are covered under the unsportsman like conduct rule. But the nfl is taking these things very seriously. Look, it would have been probably a small disaf disasterf michael sam wouldnt have been drafted. People would have pointed to intolerance. Mike sam is not an outstanding pro prospect but good enough to get drafted. He fell but he did get drafted. The nfl kind of got saved on that one. But intolerant is going to be a big battle for michael sam and the nfl. Finally do you think intolerance is an issue for the fans or do they not care . Oh no, its an issue. Ive been on twitter for the past three days just talking to people who were disgusted by the michael sam kiss. You try to tell people that look all that really matters is this guy can play football.
