Has been working with Great Success across iraq and syria. Sheila macvicar reporting. The khorasan group, close to attack on western targets possibly in the u. S. Al jazeera contributor, Lindsay Moran joins us. Lindsay, appreciate your being back with us. A report there was a reason for the timing, why khorasan was targeted so early in this round of strikes in syria. Intelligence was reporting that they were getting ready to do Something Big that there was an imminent threat. But then . Then they went dark over the summer. We have gotten less intelligence reports about what theyre up to which is always the worst thing from an intelligence operatives or professionals perspective, when a report goes dark which suggests they have some knowledge about why and how they are on western intelligence radar. They know they are being paid attention to. Thats what you mean by going dark . Exactly. These are very savvy communicators. These are seasoned al qaeda operatives. They know not to use cell phones or traditional modes of communication that the u. S. Intelligence is monitoring or watching. The best we can hope is that we get some kind of infiltration which is extremely difficult to do. I think it would be very rare that western intelligence would be able to infiltrate a group like that. That is not osay that maybe some of our arab partners or allies would not be able to infiltrate a group like that. The jordanns or others could have somebody on the periphery of that are group . They have better intelligence than we do, people on the ground and ties to people in khorasan. To be able to target the group the way that we did in and around aleppo knowing where the potential leaders were, being able to target bombmaking factories, communication networks, command and control, you cant get all of that from satellite and Surveillance Technology so there has to be some human intelligence collection going on. Thats got to happen on the ground. Thanks very much. Al jazeera contributor former cia operative Lindsay Moran. Also america tonight correspondent, Sheila Macvicar. It was the first time when abu bakr albaghdadi, putting journalists on trial including three of our al jazeera colleagues who remain in prison in egypt. In an interview with the journalist charlie rose president sisi was asked about the jailed journalists. The traditional process is, any state understands that if there is even anything, any violation on the part of the journalists, no country would like to imprison journalists. Countries would not need, need about having journalists in prison. I hope im clear and understood. I wish they hadnt hadnt been arrested on or even standing in court. Still, president sisi maintains he will not intervene in the case. Peter greste , Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy have been in prison for 270 days. When we return, new images of the crisis in the hot zone. The ravages of ebola. And fears about how the virus may be changing. Also ahead, the next generation. They marched as tensions in ferguson, missouri ignited. Weeks later, what other young men on the street where Michael Brown died see in their future. Did. Now Health Officials say ebola has become like a forest fire, burning across communities in west africa. Thousands more have become infected. Health workers are in danger. And thought just the virus thats causing issues. Workers tried to collect bodies of suspected victims. The cdc thousand estimates that 1. 4 Million People may contract the virus in just the next four months and after that three day nationwide quarantine, sierra leone now report that Health Workers found 162 corpses and 250 new victims. It appears that west africa is facing Something Different in outbreaks. Dr. Danielle lucey. You came from three weeks from sierra leone yourself in august when you were doing work with patients. Yes, maam, thats correct. What struck me is i actually heard you at a forum at jorntle experience. This is a different ebola than we have seen. It is the same virus but it has come to the statistician, the three Capital Cities that are impacted in west africa. Youre calling it urban ebola,. Not rural, widespread outside the cities but whats new unprecedented, but how we go about trying to control this ebola, that its urban as well as rural. So get to that point, i mean whats the difference . Why cant we just use the same techniques that have contained the virus in the past . Because in my opinion were not able to adequately implement those techniques. There is nothing wrong with the techniques, contact tracing, isolating the people who are sick, so they cant transmit the virus, whereas you can do that in rural settings you cant effectively do that in crowded cities. And monrovia and freetown are the proof of that. You are concerned, when we say the cdc, says, 1. 4 million, you have shown you cant control past. It is a Staggering Number in a very short period of time. We havent been able to control the virus in monrovia or freetown and if there are that many more cases in the next couple of months it is going to be very, very difficult in my opinion in keeping it from spreading into other countries and other continents outside of africa. Is it possible the virus itself may have morphed into a different virus, one that needs to be treated a different way . There has been a lot of controversy and discussion about that. My opinion, the way to understand that is to study the virus, has it mutated . If so has it conferred any ability of the virus to become either less dangerous or more dangerous . Does it kill a higher percentage of people or lower percentage of people . Has it been able to spread through the air . Which it hasnt in my opinion. The proof of that i probably would be dead. You spent many, many weeks in direct contact. With many people. If it was spreading through the air now. Appreciate you being with us, dr. Dan luce lucey, are thank you for being with us. On assignment in sierra leone, visited a Holding Center in the city of maka thrvetioni and found makani and told people were left there to die. That there was a big problem there that they were getting getting i getting panicked calls from hospital officials, nobody could cope. They were wanting to send ten, 20, 50 patients a day all of last week because they had nowhere to put them. There are no ebola Treatment Facilities at all in mckeny. The director, dr. Bar when we met him at the hospital he was actually locked in his office. As soon as we walked in he said, dont touch the doors. He took us to the Holding Center which was set up last week ahead of the National Lock down, specifically to house patients that turned up during those three days of lock down. He took us out to the Holding Center which was a converted University Building. It was meant to be a University Building but they had absolutely no other place to put people. So they were using that to house patients. He said they had 48 patients on the day we were there and patients were coming in on a daily basis, and they were having to pile them into ambulances and send them to the Treatment Centers which are at least eight, if not 16 hours drive away. We saw wards where there were fluids on the floor. Pills strewn around. Rags, clearly people had been vomiting, defecating, potentially bleeding on all of the surfaces everywhere. The worst thing that i saw was a toddler, a baby, who had fallen off one of the beds, and was lying sprawled on the floor. On some rags. And his mother was next to him. And she was too sick to lean down and pick the baby up off the floor. So as far as i could see, the three days of lockdown were turning up suspected and confirmed ebola cases, new cases, which is an important and good thing. But certainly, in mckeny, these patients had nowhere to be looked after safely. After the break, the hours top stories and a return to flash point ferguson. America tonights Lori Jane Gliha , has the story, this community has not finished. Through music darren seals expresses his emotions. He recreation and park raps about the city of ferguson. He was one of the thousands of protesters who took to the streets in the days that followed browns death. Why would i not be mad . I wake up every day hurt by this, like i feel it in my heart. The 27yearold says his community will never heal if people dont stand up and fight. I truly believe the value of black lives is not what it should be. We havent had justice yet. So im going to keep protesting and keep fighting. Keep having meetings, keep prayers, keep tweeting, keep voting, whatever we need to do to get results. Some came here to the street where the black teen aiminger was shot and killed by the a white Police Officer. For weeks teddy bears and memorial messages lined the streets. Tuesday it went up in flames sparking new demonstrations. Seals wasnt out tuesday night but hes not surprised the damage to mike browns memorial whether accidental or intentional drove hundreds of protesters back to the street. Tuesday was a night of anger. A night where Police Reported shots fired, a break in at a local business, and rocks thrown at officers. The man state Police Captain ron johnson even appeared back. We cannot have nights like last night. We cant have actions last night that can result in injury or death. Those will not be tolerated. Reporter the Ferguson Police chief Thomas Jackson asked the community for cooperation. We understand the frustration of people in our communities and their right to protest, he said, but the violence and damage to property needs to stop. President obama even recognized the difficulty in ferguson on an International Stage during a speech to the United Nations general assembly. In a summer marked by instability in the middle east and eastern europe, i know the world also took notice of the small American City of ferguson, missouri, where a young man was killed and a community was divided. So yes, we have our own racial and ethnic tensions. While darren seals continues to pour his emotions into his songs, he also knows emotions running high and a fight for change will also control what continues to happen on the streets. Im going to have to keep on, stay dedicated and consistent. So many times we stop being mad. We stop being mad we dont do anything. America tonights Lori Jane Gliha. Back with us in the studio, you know this reminds me of how quickly things change in ferguson. A repeat of what we saw there in august where things seem very calm and overnight they explode. Same thing happened a few weeks ago, it seemed very calm, we went out there with the kids that were protesting the nights before, the streets were filled with traffic and last night how quickly things can change. People go out and you still see people upset, they want answers, they want justice, the department of justice is out there today, their Civil Rights Division is holding a meeting, they want to investigate into the police department, allegations of excessive use of force, special private meetings to talk about their interactions with the police department. Private meetings, you say there will still be opportunities to go behind the closed doors with city leaders . That is what the Civil Rights Division is doing. But we were reporting on the town hall happened, and there are four more opportunities at least for more town halls Going Forward with specific topics all the way into november, theyre going to be talking about communication and diversity and racial tension. Also the road map for growth. Where do we go from here . And one of the other topics theyre planning to discuss is youth, how do we get Youth Engagement and civic involvement. Some of the people you interviewed want to be involved. America tonights Lori Jane Gliha, thanks. Its been a month since hamas and israel declared a ceasefire. But the violence is hardly over. But day. Al jazeeras Nick Schifrin visited two neighborhoods where age are and issues are spiraling. The tension is explosive. Palestinian anger is stronger than its been in over a decade. The Israeli Police response is uncompromising. Todays jerusalem is split and seething with hate. Usually say bleep among neighbors attacks are more aggressive and more personal. Enemy in my house, in my at the end of the day. If you attack me, i will attack you back. People that face me never came back again, okay . Reporter and the cycle of threats and violence is no more apparent than jewish french hill to palestine ian fransil. Separation is the answer because right now the situation that is now on the ground it cannot go on. Reporter when back the checkpoint set up after the gas station attack . Admittedly the first night. Our interviewee, the fragile relationship between french hill and esawea cracked. They looted the Small Convenience store and caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage. Today this gas station represents the broarn dialogue and the broken the broken dialogue and the broken call to assistance that was here. For the palestinian residents of is awea, the outbreak of injustice, mohamed has lived here all his life. He argues the space were walking on is soul. Both isawea and french hill are in east jerusalem. The u. N. Calls it an illegal settlement. For years the two sides have fought here but not with this intensity. On one day, palestinians protested in 42 locations across jerusalem. Since july, in east jerusalem, Israeli Police have arrested 750 palestinians, a third of them minors. The last time abu remembers this level of tension is 25 years ago when he attacked the same israeli owned gas station. Today hes traded in rambo for rocky, still fighting, but now wearing gloves. He sees himself as a village custodian. He defends the teenagers who are today as angry as he once was. Reporter what were you protesting when the Police Arrested you . Reporter 15yearold Mohamed Masri was arrested in this square. He says the palestinians will fight the israelis every time they enter. Reporter masri and his friend feel Israeli Government rejects that. Three quarters of the jerusalem lives below the poverty line. Isawea is a no mans land for garbage connection and public services. What do you think . I know that maybe they have troubles but im this is not a reason to hate me. Victor has lived with his daughter in french hill for eight years. He loved it here, but now he shows me the spot where outside the house, his car was burned. Today his daughter doesnt feel safe walking through her own neighborhood. She carries pepper spray and a seemingly innocent looking piece of plastic. Reporter so you installed the extra security after the car was attacked . Down the street reves car was also torched. She installed security lights. I thought that we could live together, i thought that people are people are people and now i see its not that. Its not like that. As the violence increases, a taxi driver who works in the center of jerusalem. This summer jewish residents started harassing him. And on the same spot that video was filmed our cameras captured antiarab hate. Eli told us he had at a tacked palestinians. Attacked palestinians. The hate breeds violence. Propalestinian attacks, sia karosomy was almost beaten to death. Today after all the violence, some in french hill believe the only solution is to separate. We want a barrier that people cannot cross this valley. And also maybe a checkpoint up the hill for cars. That they can go through but people that want to harm us, the police will stop them. Reporter but its that kind of isolation the people fight. The Israeli Police recently blocked one of the villages three main roads. Abu humus moved a stone where residents could get on with their lives. What many expect, uneasy coexistence. A wedding ceremony in isawea, full coffee shops in french hill. When 19yearold Daniel Pierce bleep came out for his family he recorded it for the world to see. After posting it online, supporters donated almost 100,000 to help daniel rebuild his life. Youre a disgrace. Im not a disgrace. Yes you are. No im not. Reporter but Daniel Pierce is far from alone. The city much. Atlanta is considered ground zero for homeless gay kids rejected by their parents. Tracking down these kids, trying the to get them help. D trying to get them hem. Do you think the family rejection is greater here because we are in the south, in the bible belt . Oh without question, statistically we know that to be the case. He often finds teenagers as young as 16 down here underthis under this bridge. Imagine. It is unimaginable. Many of these are intelligent kids, they are not coming from a poverty stricken life but because of the household they are cut off and have nothing else to do. 2,000 children are homeless in atlanta, who identify as gay lesbian transsexual or transgender. They engage in activities, like survival sex, looking up so you have a warm place to sleep at night, often they will use drugs so they can stay awake, keep their with wits about themselves, or petty criminal activity like stealing, pickpocketing, digging in a dumpster for food, Something Like that. They just chose to go out on their own. Reporter ryan peterson, knows all about survival. Until a few months ago, he was homeless. These streets, theres definitely a lot of memories like walking down just after being awake for three days, walking into mcdonalds just to get a milk shake because i had had nothing to eat. For days. For days. At 23 hes lived a life few can imagine. I grew up in walnut grove, georgia. Rural area . Very rural, yeah. I knew i was gay when i was in about middle school. Did your family embrace that or was there a conflict . I was very rebellious. I was very much like, okay mom im going to throw it in your face that im gay. Because i thought it was because she didnt like that i was gay. And she didnt love me because of it. At that time, thats what i thought. But now being sober as i am and getting back in connection with my mom, i can only imagine what i put her through. What she went through. Because all she did was try for me. Big of to you take on some of that blame and responsibility. My family was scared of what would happen to me. Now that im looking back on it they were just scared. Reporter ryans internal struggles led the promising gymnast who loved theater to drop out of school and flee to the city of atlanta at 17. How did you make money . One of my major sources of income was porn, for a while. That was a long road. But after that, i dated a drug dealer. I didnt really have to have a job. Drugs. Porn. Uhhuh. Trust me, the whole epitome of party gay life, ive pretty much done. Reporter sometimes ryan said he would frequent adult bookstores, video booths and bathhouses looking for someone seeking a quick hookup so he wouldnt have to sleep on the streets. What was your low point . My first one was in california. I had woken up on the roof of somebodys house after being awake for about five days. And i was still rolling, still high, and i just looked around, and i started crying. I missed my family. And i called my cousin and she bought me a plane ticket back. And i got back, and i started to get my life back on track. And then i found out i was positive. And when i found out i was positive hiv positive. Yes, hiv positive. It crushed me. Not because of the fact that i was positive. Because of the fact that i couldnt have kids. Thats what really crushed me the most. Because ive always wanted kids and i always will. After that, ryan turned back to a life on the streets. Using and dealing crystal meth. His 300 a day habit led to a second low point. You recall crashing here . Uhhuh. Were you paying rent . Huhuh. I remember just walking up here, walking between buildings, carrying drugs, taking them to other people. Its hard. Some places are just memories that just need to stay memories. Youre done with this . I am. I have to be. Reporter fearing death, ryan found the strength to reach out to an Organization Called lost and found. Founder Rick Westbrook showed us a new shelter they were trying to build, to house atlantas homeless lgbt youth. Most people know the daniel pit story, thats got national, international recognition. Thats something that happens every day. Were fortunate enough that daniel hilt record on his phone. Hit record on his phone. Loss and found have helped 400 homeless kids in the last three years including Daniel Pierce. We know nationwide we have 24 to 48 hours before they have to do something illegal to survive. Whether that be steal from a Grocery Store or convenience store, just to put some food in their bodies, or sell drugs, or take drugs to cope, or sell themselves. Youve been around other people in similar situations as you. Uhhuh. Why why are there so many . Gay teenagers go through a lot in the south. There are still parts of the south where the ku klux klan still exist. There are parts of the south where you will get beaten up if gay. What is the message to the Greater Community . I need straight people to talk to their families. And wrap their head around, its not okay to kick your kid out on the street because of words you read in a book. This has got to stop, plain and simple. Reporter for first time in years ryan has a steady jobs. Womens is right there and mens is down there. Hired by lost and found to work in their thrift store. On the day of our interview he was 100 days clean and sober. He also started reconnecting with his family and making plans to go to college. Theres so much love here. Its like a second family. Every day i come to work here. Im in love with it. There are hard days. There are stressful days but at the end of the day, these people are my family. Where would you be without them . Probably still using. And probably, still lost. And still hating myself. And still thinking there was no escape. Taking his escape one day at a time. Total amount is reporter supported by his found family he is one of the lucky ones. America tonights adam may joins us. This is a fascinating story and i think a lot of people have been moved by the story of daniel, the young man in that video, what has he been doing now . That story went viral, daniel im really happy to report i just got an update on him and im told hes doing great right now. Hes really been able to take this situation and move in a new direction in his life. He did get some help from that organization, lost and found and they have pen trying to put him on a better past, they have been working with his own family, theres a distant relative and daniel is staying with that person now and trying to figure out with what to do with all this money he has raised. Now that hes made 100,000 in donations any additional money he is giving to that lost and found organization to help lost youth and getting involved in that organization too. That 100,000 is a pretty substantial figure. Thats a large chunk of money. He can get housing, he can get a car. One of the things hes expressed he wants to get a vehicle. Anything on the agenda . Hes working with counselors to figure out what the best path for him is. Hes devoted to animals and maybe working in a pet shop is something involved in his issue. The other young man, that you interviewed rather extensively, ryan how he is doing . Ryan is actually doing really really well, still clean and sober more than 100 days. H days. He had a serious addiction to crystal meth, 300 a day. You can imagine some of the things he had to do to support that drug habit. One of the interesting things i found out from him is hes incredibly intelligence, hes taught himself computer science, he wants to get into i. T. Work, hes working at lost and found he hopes some day he will be on a really solid past where he can help other kids as well. This is an organization whose work is still needed, still active. Still active. Were talking hundreds of gay lesbian b biswal youth on the streets of atlanta. Bisexual youth on the streets of atlanta. Also help the homeless lgbt population as well but definitely a big problem there in atlanta and they do need resources to combat it. America tonights adam may, thanks so much.
