They were able to use the media to grow their user base. That was specifically for drugs, but there were other things, weapons and child porn out there, right . Yes, it can be nasty, anything that you can imagine on a black market. Recreational drugs, weapons, hit pornography. What do you mean by hit services . You could find people who would do sass nag assassinationn demand, and even people who were raising money in order to perform assassinations its remarkable. But at the same time, there were also some of the vendors on these Online Marketplaces are also selling things like chemotherapy drugs, and hiv drugs too. So its a really vast array of services and products that you can buy anonymously because of using these nervouses lets go back for a second here, the feds have moved in on silk road and shut that down, but is there any liability to people who were using it . They were anonymous, and is there any way to track them now . Yeah, absolutely. What really brought silk road down was a lack of Operational Security, and classic detective work, and i think the investigators, the fbi in this case, are going to use all of the leverage that they can from these initial arrests, and continuing to hunt down the vendors. So those who werent practicing good Operational Security should be concerned. And that being said, some of the most popular vendors from silk road are on some of the competitive sites that have popped up, so business is still booming also on the dark web are those folks, as lori jane referred to in her second report, maybe negative or maybe they have other reasons to want to be concealed in it yes, absolutely. At this point, how connected our society is, with the revelations about the amount of surveillance, i think its justified that some people are concerned about how they present their identities online. And we should really recognize at this point that anonymity is a fundamental part to the right to free expression. But one last thought here. If you could say that there was a way for experts to track down people who used silk road, wouldnt there be a way for people with more positive intentions. Say for example, the syrian activists, shouldnt they also be concerned that they could be tracked . Yes, they should be. No technology will do everything. And encryptions are broken overtime. And the largest threat to the tor is the u. S. Government. To produce malware thats specifically designed to attack the tor browser bundle which you mentioned earlier. When they compromised the online web host freedom posting months ago, and then used the malware to reveal the identity of the tor users. You dont see any of that in agriculture. They dont ask, is she 12 . They just want their job done. How many of you get up before 5 oclock in the morning . Protecting our chirp, its a fundamental element of labor laws, but across the country, those laws are being broken daily. 200,000 children are being hired illegally to work in agriculture fields, the work is dangerous, and sometimes deadly. We traveled to the onion fields of texas. Its saturday morning at marianas house. Shes taking her daughter, and her granddaughter out to the fields to pick onions. Since its the weekend, it will be a full day of harvesting. [ speaking spanish ] reporter mariana and her children follow the harvest across texas, new mexico and colorado. They live in their home in laredo, texas, for only part of the year. Onions have to be har verified by hand. Harvested by hand. The workers pick off the roots and the green tops, and collect them into burlap bags in the fields. The workers earn between 80 cents and 1. 75 per bag of onions. For the young men, who work at a very fast clip, they could potentially earn up to 20 an hour, but most of these people are earning less than 10. Its an incentive to bring their kids up, and the kids bags are counted to the parents total, there by making them more productive. And it also means that these children are making far less than the minimum wage. The u. S. Government estimates that hundreds of thousands of children, like annabela and fields. It can be back breaking work. Currently federal law allows children as young as 12 to work in the fields an unlimited number of hours outside of school. In other industries, the kids need to be 15 years old to work. There are exceptions for 14 and 15yearolds, but they have to work with their school systems. You dont see any of that in agriculture. As long as youre 12 and have your parent with you, you are able to work out there an unlimited amount of hours. Reporter agriculture ranks at the top of the most hazardous work, along with mining and construction. For workers 1517, the risk of fatal injury is four times the amount of other industries, according to the labor department. Reporter i think you were working hard, you were fast all day. All over the country, children like evelyn put in long days in extreme temperatures. Sometimes without shelter or access to facilities. Theyre exposed to test sides over long periods of time. Extreme poverty can leave few other options. Laredo, texas, sits just inside of the u. S. Border with mexico. This school has some of the highest numbers of migrant farm worker children in the area. They travel with their families to other states to work for part of the year, changing schools midterm. She advocates for School Children who are also migrant workers. She began working in the fields with her own migrant parents at the age of nine. Thats a fundamental difference in philosophy, for those who believe that the federal government is the solution, and those of us who believe that the federal government because of its one size fits all standard is the problem. When you hear the lobbyist speak and say its a parents rights, whats the reality of that . This is not about the family farm. This is about employers hiring children to work. And in no other industry do we let employers hire children as young as 12, but on a small farm, theres no age that a child can be hired to work. We dont let poor families bring their children to factories or offices or Shopping Centers but theyre allowed to bring them to work in conditions that are extremely dangerous it them. Can you talk about dangers . Theyre being crushed by tractors, perched by pesticides, and electrocuted by irrigation equipment, and tappinged in machinery. 75 of the children who died on the job in the United States last year under the age of 16 were on farms. 75 of those killed on the job under the age of 16. There are loopholes, and how do you solve this . The most important thing to do is close the loophole in the u. S. Child labor law, that leaves this one group of children, mostly poor, and mostly hispanic, without the protection. So close the loophole and apply the protection thats already apply. But individual states can go ahead and change their own laws now. States like north carolina, texas, california, oregon. Those states can protect their own working children without waiting for congress, which has abandoned poor hispanic child farm workers. The states can do something about it.
