In september he was found guilty of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power. He was one of the top 25 leaders in the communist party and faces life in prison. Those are the stories at this hour. Im john siegenthaler. America tonight is up next on al jazeera. See you tomorrow night. You can get the latest news on aljazeera. Com. On america tonight, inside of the dark net where you can speak your mind or commit a crime in the most anonymous corners of the digital world. There are plenty of people who are just fooling around, and experimenting with either their paranoid fantasies, libertarian dream of living in a World Without governments spying eyes. Also tonight, who is the victim . A big payout to the california officer fired for abuse, and fashion forward, the new effort to buy a home and do better in the world. Even when that seems hard to do. You cannot really buy clothes these days, all fabrics are produced there. Good evening, im joie chen. And thank you for become us. It was one of the worlds Biggest Online marketplaces for goods and services until the fbi cracked down on the silk road. Underground website was hidden in a part of the internet called the dark net. We are shown how to access this secret online world and explains how some are using it to break the law. Reporter a hidden site hidden deep inside of the worldwide web. One of the sophisticated marketplaces. Silk road before the fbi shut it down this month. The 1 billion black market attracted buyers and sellers from all over the globe, including a washington d. C. 17yearold who had drugs shipped right to his doorstep describe what happened when you got the package . What did it look like . It was a birthday card, not too suspicious, average interview envelope and iopened it up and t molly, lsd, shrooms, and thats about crazy. The High School Senior said he and his exgirlfriend used coins to purchase highly illegal substances from a completely anonymous seller. He describes the process as convenient, sort of like using amazon. Com. Search for the drugs you want, and even read Online Reviews about the seller, and that made him feel secure. Why do you say that its not safe to go on the street. You never know what youre getting. And you could be getting a chemical that could kill you, but when you buy online, youre that. Silk road is among thousands of underground websites hidden on the dark net. We discovered sites selling guns and pornography and weapons how would you describe the dark net its made up of people who want to be unanimous online. Cole is a media strategist and a writer who studies privacy and anonymity on the dark net so this could be a political activist, or someone offering their services as a hitman. There are met of people plenty of people fooling around with their political fantasies or anarchy libertarian dream with a government without prying eyes. So i downloaded it. And i click it, and its going to signal. Literally, in just 30 seconds, and im good to go. He showed us how to access the dark net. We used a special Free Software called tower, and browsers are virtually undetectable as they navigate the underworl underwor. How does it work . It gets your information across a series of nodes, and a node would be a user of tor, who allows his computer to relay messages across the network. Like with pinball, the messages is going over here and here . This is happening all over the world, so my message is pinging over to siberia if theres a tor user out there. This allows them without any websites for their identity not being revealed its a creation of the u. S. Government through and through. It was originally developed to allow military agents to communicate safely. The more people using the network, the stronger social security, which is why the u. S. Government opened it up to the public. And now we have millions of users on the tor network. Its not only used for sinister purposes. There is a bright side to the dark net say im a teenager in alabama, and i dont want my family to know about it, there are many reasons to want to escape your internet behavior that dont involve activities like buying drugs, and to say this is only for the drug users, and the child porn addicts and the creeps and the criminals, i think its a tremendously narrow minded and myopic way to look at it. so there youve seen a way that the dark net can be used for dark transitions online. And now we want to show you how this program can be used for good, like helping civilians communicate in the middle of a serious war. We pick up on this side of the story. In a country like syria, remaining Anonymous Online is a fundamental part of surviving people get killed because of their activities online. He was a political activist for syrias kurdish population before the syria civil war. When the war started, they wanted syria to secretly Community Without being monitored or censored by the government. We werent allowed to find people, but communications allowed us to bring thousands of people together to talk. When the chemical master happened in the damascus countryside, the images sicked us. There would be no communication. Off han feared for his own life, when a british filmmaker accidentally revealed his identity in syria. They got a footage of me, talking about what they were doing. And that could put me in jail. Maybe that would be a reason for them to find me. So we had to smuggle me out of the country, and thats what happened. So i went out of the country. Reporter hoffman fled the country and developed his own security operating system. Similar to the tor software, his creation allows users to avoid government detection. Had allowed us to conversation with his friend in syria, a friend that already spent time in jail. If you were having the same conversation right now without using this software, what could happen to him . [ inaudible ] [ speaking Foreign Language ] he is in the conflict area, so they would go through. What are the message thats are the most important that he has delivered out of the dark net . [ speaking Foreign Language ] people are showing videos, and showing the world whats going on. After the mastery that happened, people starred to get the news about the massacre. And there was no security or dark net tools, they would just be in jail. And there would be nothing outside. Reporter before signing off, hoffmans friend had a final message. Its important for the International Community to put more into supporting the dark net because it saves the lives of a lot of people. And a lot of people, they actually got arrested because they were not using these tools. Reporter hoffman said that he has no plans to return to syria, but continues to help anyone he can access the secure dark net, whether they support his political ideals or not. I dont agree with a lot of people in syria, but i should about. Its important. Laura jane reports, and were going to talk more about the dark net and its future. Rick jones from san francisco, just one quick thing here. Dark net, deep web, and which one, does it matter . Its all the same, right . Yeah, it all means the same thing. Deep web is the most commonly used term online at this point. So when we talk about the deep web, lets talk first about the neverarious uses of it. Its not just silk road, but other devices as well in no, there were wednesdays selling these things online before silk road. And since silk road has shut down, a number of other competitors have come online. Its just that silk road really had the best marketing campaign. They were able to use the media to grow their user base. That was specifically for drugs, but there were other things, weapons and child porn out there, right . Yes, it can be nasty, anything that you can imagine on a black market. Recreational drugs, weapons, hit pornography. What do you mean by hit services . You could find people who would do sass nag assassinationn demand, and even people who were raising money in order to perform assassinations its remarkable. But at the same time, there were also some of the vendors on these Online Marketplaces are also selling things like chemotherapy drugs, and hiv drugs too. So its a really vast array of services and products that you can buy anonymously because of using these nervouses lets go back for a second here, the feds have moved in on silk road and shut that down, but is there any liability to people who were using it . They were anonymous, and is there any way to track them now . Yeah, absolutely. What really brought silk road down was a lack of Operational Security, and classic detective work, and i think the investigators, the fbi in this case, are going to use all of the leverage that they can from these initial arrests, and continuing to hunt down the vendors. So those who werent practicing good Operational Security should be concerned. And that being said, some of the most popular vendors from silk road are on some of the competitive sites that have popped up, so business is still booming also on the dark web are those folks, as lori jane referred to in her second report, maybe negative or maybe they have other reasons to want to be concealed in it yes, absolutely. At this point, how connected our society is, with the revelations about the amount of surveillance, i think its justified that some people are concerned about how they present their identities online. And we should really recognize at this point that anonymity is a fundamental part to the right to free expression. But one last thought here. If you could say that there was a way for experts to track down people who used silk road, wouldnt there be a way for people with more positive intentions. Say for example, the syrian activists, shouldnt they also be concerned that they could be tracked . Yes, they should be. No technology will do everything. And encryptions are broken overtime. And the largest threat to the tor is the u. S. Government. To produce malware thats specifically designed to attack the tor browser bundle which you mentioned earlier. When they compromised the online web host freedom posting months ago, and then used the malware to reveal the identity of the tor users. Its quite complex, and we appreciate your insight, Internet Security expert, rich jones. Thank you for being with us. Thank you very much. Here on america tonight, take your child to work attacks on a new and dangerous meaning. How old are you . Nine. How old were you when you first started working out here . Seven. Fault lines how children are hired by Us Agriculture to help put food on americas tables. In any other industry kids need to be 16 years old to be able to work. You dont see any of that in agriculture. They dont ask, is she 12 . They just want their job done. How many of you get up before 5 oclock in the morning . Protecting our chirp, its a fundamental element of labor laws, but across the country, those laws are being broken daily. 200,000 children are being hired illegally to work in agriculture fields, the work is dangerous, and sometimes deadly. We traveled to the onion fields of texas. Its saturday morning at marianas house. Shes taking her daughter, and her granddaughter out to the fields to pick onions. Since its the weekend, it will be a full day of harvesting. [ speaking spanish ] reporter mariana and her children follow the harvest across texas, new mexico and colorado. They live in their home in laredo, texas, for only part of the year. Onions have to be har verified by hand. Harvested by hand. The workers pick off the roots and the green tops, and collect them into burlap bags in the fields. The workers earn between 80 cents and 1. 75 per bag of onions. For the young men, who work at a very fast clip, they could potentially earn up to 20 an hour, but most of these people are earning less than 10. Its an incentive to bring their kids up, and the kids bags are counted to the parents total, there by making them more productive. And it also means that these children are making far less than the minimum wage. The u. S. Government estimates that hundreds of thousands of children, like annabela and fields. It can be back breaking work. Currently federal law allows children as young as 12 to work in the fields an unlimited number of hours outside of school. In other industries, the kids need to be 15 years old to work. There are exceptions for 14 and 15yearolds, but they have to work with their school systems. You dont see any of that in agriculture. As long as youre 12 and have your parent with you, you are able to work out there an unlimited amount of hours. Reporter agriculture ranks at the top of the most hazardous work, along with mining and construction. For workers 1517, the risk of fatal injury is four times the amount of other industries, according to the labor department. Reporter i think you were working hard, you were fast all day. All over the country, children like evelyn put in long days in extreme temperatures. Sometimes without shelter or access to facilities. Theyre exposed to test sides over long periods of time. Extreme poverty can leave few other options. Laredo, texas, sits just inside of the u. S. Border with mexico. This school has some of the highest numbers of migrant farm worker children in the area. They travel with their families to other states to work for part of the year, changing schools midterm. She advocates for School Children who are also migrant workers. She began working in the fields with her own migrant parents at the age of nine. Every day, mc00 in the 00 4 00 in the morningful how many of you get up that early, 4 00 in the morning to go out in the fields. Mig rapt children have to leave school early and come to school late. Perhaps going to school in another state, the curriculum is different, different teachers, friends, text books, and different assessments. Right now, the association of farm worker out of washington d. C. , its still quoting a 60 dropout rate for migrant students. Reporter many farmers in the u. S. Are against changing the old child labor laws. Were going to meet one member of the farm bureau who is also a cattle rancher in montana, dennis greenberg, a former congressman who today forms a lobby in december. He sat on the House Committee for agriculture. He was given an award by the farm bureau for representing its interests while in office. We were down in texas watching the onion picking process, and i wanted to show you what that looked like. Sharp anything the shears, and picking the onions, and presumably, child labor is wrong, and should that be prevented in any way, and should we keep the laws where its illegal . Its not legal. Reporter can you explain how thats not illegal . Because right now, the the saa says that any child over 12. 12 what youre saying is that the government has a better understanding of the parents. I hope we dont go to that. Thats a fundamental difference in philosophy, for those who believe that the federal government is the solution, and those of us who believe that the federal government because of its one size fits all standard is the problem. That report, and now shes from the childrens Rights Division of human rights watch. And we see that, and it just seems obvious that child labor laws ought to protect these kids, and why doesnt that work . Children in agriculture are not protects because while child labor laws are basically pretty good, theres a gaping hole for agriculture that threats children work or farms for longer hours and in nar more Hazardous Conditions than anywhere in the United States. When you hear the lobbyist speak and say its a parents rights, whats the reality of that . This is not about the family farm. This is about employers hiring children to work. And in no other industry do we let employers hire children as young as 12, but on a small farm, theres no age that a child can be hired to work. We dont let poor families bring their children to factories or offices or Shopping Centers but theyre allowed to bring them to work in conditions that are extremely dangerous it them. Can you talk about dangers . Theyre being crushed by tractors, perched by pesticides, and electrocuted by irrigation equipment, and tappinged in machinery. 75 of the children who died on the job in the United States last year under the age of 16 were on farms. 75 of those killed on the job under the age of 16. There are loopholes, and how do you solve this . The most important thing to do is close the loophole in the u. S. Child labor law, that leaves this one group of children, mostly poor, and mostly hispanic, without the protection. So close the loophole and apply the protection thats already apply. But individual states can go ahead and change their own laws now. States like north carolina, texas, california, oregon. Those states can protect their own working children without waiting for congress, which has abandoned poor hispanic child farm workers. The states can do something about it. From the Childrens Division of human rights watch, thank you for being with us. Thanks for having me. You can watch her full report of children at work at fault line. Coming up on friday at 9 30 p. M. Eastern. Coming up next on this program, the use of force that went viral. Uc davis. This is the 900page document we call obamacare. My staff has read the entire thing. Can congress say the same .
