Times Square New Year's Eve ball drop to be a virtual celebration
There will be no massive crowds, but plenty of music will still be on tap for New Year’s Eve in Times Square this year. Instead, the massive ball drop will be a "virtual New Year's Eve" event broadcast live online and on television.
On Sunday, workers installed 192 Waterford crystal triangles on Times Square’s New Year’s Eve ball, The glittering Times Square ball is a 12-foot geodesic sphere with more than 2,600 crystal triangles. Every year, some of the crystals are swapped, resulting in new features to reflect the coming new year.
