Ori Menashe's new "Bavel" cookbook is Israeli-inspired – The Forward

May 24, 2021
It’s a bit of a surreal experience opening “Bavel.”
The new cookbook by Ori Menashe, Genevieve Gergis and Lesley Suter, due out May 25, makes no mention of what many consider the worst year to ever to befall the industry. And at a time when the conflict is front page news, the main mentions of Israel are about Dr. Shukshuka or hummus at Abu Hassan or foie gras.

And those photographs are an exercise in pure escapism: like the food porn shots of bronzed whole chickens and plump heads of cauliflower hanging on metal hooks over the blaze of a wood-fired oven, for example. And Menashe’s impossibly good-looking family, down to an adorable toddler daughter named Saffron.
