WHATELY — A Holyoke man was arrested Monday morning after a brief foot pursuit following a car chase that started in Montague, included an accident that dislodged the vehicle’s bumper and license plate, and reached roughly 90 mph before ending when the suspect crashed at Exit 26 on Interstate 91 southbound.
Emmanuel Castro, 31, was taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for treatment of minor injuries at around 8:20 a.m. after complaining of pain following his arrest, according to Massachusetts State Trooper Sergei Skorupa, who took Castro into custody.
State Police Sgt. Anthony Martino said Castro is set to be arraigned for failure to stop for a police officer, speeding, assault with a dangerous weapon and a marked lanes violation. Martino said the assault charge stems from Castro’s swerve at a Deerfield Police officer to successfully avoid stop sticks (tire-deflation devices) that were placed on the highway in an attempt to stop Castro.
