May 13, 2021 Share When she was in college, Patricia Cumbie says she was attacked by a man at a party. “I am a rape survivor. I was sexually assaulted when I was a student many years ago now,” says Cumbie, who is in her 50s. “And I remember at the time feeling like, ‘Oh, is what happened to me a crime or not?’ And I think that’s a very common reaction for a lot of survivors, you know, because violence against women is so normalized.” Cumbie is among the one in three women worldwide who will experience physical or sexual violence in her lifetime.
