Heavy metal blares from his speakers as he sips water out of his large silver thermos. “Most people think because you’re a farmer that you like country music,” Garst says. “I like metal.” He talks about Corey Taylor, lead singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, while pulling out his phone to play a YouTube video of the singer’s “Wicked Game” cover. ‘Steward of the Land’ This is the first in a series of occasional stories as Flatland rural affairs reporter Jacob Douglas follows a Missouri farm family through the seasons of the year.
